From ground-based observations of Vesta, it is well-known that the vestan surface has a large variation in albedo. Analysis of images acquired by the Hubble Space Telescope allowed production of the first color maps of Vesta and showed a diverse surface in terms of reflectance. Thanks to images collected by the Dawn spacecraft at Vesta, it became obvious that these specific units observed previously can be linked to geological features. The presence of the darkest material mostly around impact craters and scattered in the Western hemisphere has been associated with carbonaceous chondrite contamination [4]; whereas the brightest materials are believed to result from exposure of unaltered material from the subsurface of Vesta (in fresh looking impact crater rims and in Rheasilvia's ejecta and rim remants). Here we focus on a distinct material characterized by a steep slope in the near-IR relative to all other kinds of materials found on Vesta. It was first detected when combining Dawn Framing Camera (FC) color images in Clementine false-color composites [5] during the Approach phase of the mission (100000 to 5200 km from Vesta). We investigate the mineralogical and elemental composition of this material and its relationship with the HEDs (Howardite-Eucrite- Diogenite group of meteorites).

NASA's Dawn spacecraft entered orbit around asteroid (4) Vesta in July 2011 for a yearlong mapping orbit. The surface of Vesta as imaged by the Dawn Framing Camera (FC) revealed a surface that is unlike any asteroid we have visited so far with a spacecraft. Albedo and color variations on Vesta are the most diverse in the asteroid belt with a majority of these linked to distinct compositional units on the asteroid s surface. FC discovered dark material on Vesta. These low albedo surface features were first observed during Rotational Characterization 3 phase at a resolution of approx. 487 m/pixel. Here we explore the composition and possible meteoritical analogs for the dark material on Vesta.

Almost a century ago, simple petrographic observations were used to suggest a close genetic link between eucrites and the silicates in mesosiderites [1]. Mesosiderites are composed of roughly equal proportions of silicates that are very similar in mineralogy and texture to howardites, and Fe, Ni metal (Fig. 1) [2]. This similarity has led some to conclude that mesosiderites come from the howardite, eucrite and diogenite (HED) parent asteroid [3, 4]. Subsequent petrologic study demonstrated a number of differences between mesosiderite silicates and HEDs that are more plausibly explained as requiring separate parent asteroids [5]. However, HEDs and mesosiderites are identical in oxygen isotopic composition, and this has been used to argue for a common parent 4 Vesta [6].

There are currently five known groups of basaltic achondrites that represent material from distinct differentiated parent bodies. These are the howardite-eucrite-diogenite (HED) clan, mesosiderite silicates, angrites, Ibitira, and Northwest Africa (NWA) 011 [1]. Spectroscopically all these basaltic achondrite groups have absorption bands located near 1 and 2 microns due to the presence of pyroxene. Some of these meteorite types have spectra that are quite similar, but nevertheless have characteristics (e.g. spectral slope, band depths, etc.) that may be used to differentiate them from each other.

Introduction: Asteroids represent the only in situ surviving population of planetesimals from the formation of the inner solar system and therefore include materials from the very earliest stages of solar system formation. Hence, these bodies can provide constraints on the processes and conditions that were present during this epoch and can be used to test current models and theories describing the late solar nebula, the early solar system and subsequent planetary accretion. From detailed knowledge of asteroid mineralogic compositions the probable starting materials, thermal histories, and oxidation states of asteroid parent bodies can be inferred. If such data can be obtained from specific mainbelt source regions, then this information can be used to map out the formation conditions of the late solar nebula within the inner solar system and possibly distinguish any trends in oxidation state that may be present.

A-type asteroids are a relatively rare taxonomic class with no more than 17 known objects. They were first identified as a separate group of R-type asteroids based on broadband spectrophotometry by, and were later classified based on ECAS data by Tholen (1984). These asteroids have moderately high albedos (0.13-0.39), extremely reddish slopes shortward of 0.7 m and a strong absorption feature centered at approx. 1.05 m. More recent surveys like the Small Main-Belt Asteroid Spectroscopic Survey (SMASS) and SMASS II have expanded the taxonomic classes including the A-type, adding 12 new asteroids to the original five.

The S-asteroid taxonomic class is the second largest grouping of main-belt asteroids that are primarily located in the inner main belt (a < 3.0 AU) [1]. These asteroids have historically been the subject of interest within the asteroid community for several reasons. Continuing discussions about the nature of the S-asteroids (ordinary chondrite-like or thermally-evolved) and the putative space weathering effect on S-asteroids serve as examples of issues currently unresolved within the community [2,3]. Despite this general interest, detailed mineralogical investigations of individual S-asteroids has been relatively rare. A few workers have studied individual, or small groups of, S-asteroids [4,5,6,7]. Gaffey et al. [2] published their S-asteroid survey in 1993 that characterized 39 of the 144 then-classified S-asteroids. Despite the work already accomplished, the need exists to rigorously characterize the remaining S-asteroid population to gain a better understanding of these asteroids origin, nature, and physical characteristics.

The NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft returned near-IR spectra of asteroid 433 Eros at spatial resolutions ranging from 2.5 to 100's km during its year-long orbital mission in 2000. Assuming modified Gaussian absorption bands represent the reflectance spectrum between 0.8-2.5 m we fit the average of all geometrically corrected spectra acquired by the near-IR spectrometer (NIS) with seven absorption bands. Interpretation of the absorption bands in terms of olivine and pyroxene minerals indicates that the surface of Eros contains olivine and two pyroxenes with compositions that are indicative of a partially melted assemblage. This partial melting must have occurred when the asteroid was part of a larger minor planet, prior to break up into its current elongated and irregular shape.

It is now thought that approximately 16% of all asteroids among the near-Earth population may be binary objects. Several independent lines of evidence, such as the presence of doublet craters on the Earth and Moon [1, 2], complex lightcurves of near-Earth objects exhibiting mutual events [3], and radar images of near-Earth asteroids revealing distinct primary and secondary objects, have supported this conclusion [4]. To date at least 23 near-Earth objects have been discovered as binary systems with expectations that many more have yet to be identified or recognized. Little is known about the physical characteristics of binary objects except that they seem to have fairly rapid rotation rates, generally have primaries in the approx. 1 km diameter range with smaller secondaries on the order of a few hundred meters, and apart from a few exceptions, are in synchronous orbits [4, 5]. Previously only two of these binary near-Earth asteroids (1998 ST27 and 2003 YT1) have been characterized in terms of detailed mineralogical investigations [6, 7]. Such investigations are required to fully understand the formation mechanisms of these binary objects and their possible source regions. In addition, detailed knowledge of these objects may play an important role for planning future spacecraft missions and for the development of impact mitigation strategies. The work presented here represents a continued effort to characterize this particular sub-group of the near- Earth asteroid population.

For many years several investigators have suggested that some portion of the near-Earth asteroid population may actually be extinct cometary nuclei. Evidence used to support these hypotheses was based on: observations of asteroid orbits and associated meteor showers (e.g. 3200 Phaethon and the Geminid meteor shower); low activity of short period comet nuclei, which implied nonvolatile surface crusts (e.g. Neujmin 1, Arend-Rigaux); and detections of transient cometary activity in some near-Earth asteroids (e.g. 4015 Wilson-Harrington). Recent investigations have suggested that approximately 5-10% of the near- Earth asteroid population may be extinct comets. However if members of the near-Earth asteroid population are extinct cometary nuclei, then there should be some objects within this population that are near their final stages of evolution and so should demonstrate only low levels of activity. The recent detections of coma from near-Earth object 2001 OG108 have renewed interest in this possible comet-asteroid connection. This paper presents the first high quality ground-based near-infrared reflectance spectrum of a comet nucleus combined with detailed lightcurve and albedo measurements.

Mineralogy is the key to determining the compositional history of the asteroids and to determining the genetic relationships between the asteroids and meteorites. The most sophisticated remote mineralogical characterizations involve the quantitative extraction of specific diagnostic parameters from reflectance spectra and the use of quantitative interpretive calibrations to determine the presence, abundance and/or composition of mineral phases in a surface material. Although this approach is potentially subject to systematic errors, it provides the only consistent set of asteroid surface material characterizations.

We present two new dark material spectra of Hyperion compared with previously published dark material spectra of Hyperion and Iapetus. A 0.67-micron absorption feature is seen in one of the two new spectra. This suggests possible mineralogical differences across the surface of this Saturnian satellite. Methodology and calibrations are being developed to identify specific clay mineral species in the CCD spectra of dark asteroids. This will constrain the geologic processes within their parent bodies and the production or alteration of organic molecules within such asteroids. Additional information is contained in the original extended abstract.

Preliminary analysis of infrared reflectance spectra obtained of asteroid 1998 ST27 indicates the presence of a weak 1-micron band consistent with mafic silicates. Further analysis of these data will be presented which should constrain its composition. Additional information is contained in the original extended abstract.

Results from an observational program to detect weak silicate features on M-type asteroids will be presented. Results include nearly full-rotational coverage of asteroids 69 Hesperia, 110 Lydia, 201 Penelope and 216 Kleopatra. Additional information is contained in the original extended abstract.

Spectral studies of asteroids and dynamical models have converged to yield, at last, a clear view of asteroid-meteorite linkages. Plausible parent bodies for most meteorite types have either been identified or it has become evident where to search for them.

A comprehensive reanalysis of the spectra derived by combining spatial and spectral data from the Galileo SSI and NIMS instruments in order to verify and refine the compositional interpretation of asteroid 951 Gaspra.

Reflectance spectroscopy, thermal infrared radiometry, optical polarimetry, speckle interferometry, and high-resolution imagery are among the remote sensing techniques applied to Vesta, producing a sophisticated characterization of this object. Reflectance spectroscopy has provided relatively detailed descriptions of the surface mineralogy of Vesta and has provided critical evidence linking Vesta to the basaltic achondrite meteorites.

MASTER (Mainbelt Asteroid Exploration/Rendezvous) focuses on the comprehensive global study of important large mainbelt asteroids. A three instument, four-investigation payload can be placed into orbit around 4 vesta within the cost/complexity envelope of the Discovery program using a Delta-II launch vehicle.

A diverse range of processes were invoked as the dominant factor or as important contributory factors in the modification of the optical surface and regolith of the moon. These include impact vitrification by large and small projectiles, solar wind implantation and the reduction of oxidized iron during energetic events, sputtering and crystal lattice damage by energetic cosmic rays, shock metamorphism of minerals, mixing of diverse lithologies by impacts, and contamination by external materials. These processes are also potentially important on the rocky surfaces of other small solar system bodies. For icy bodies, several additional processes are also possible, including formation of complex organic compounds from methane and ammonia-bearing ices by ultraviolet irradiation and the condensation of vapor species to form frost layers in the polar or cooler regions of objects at appropriate heliocentric distances. The lunar case, even when completely understood, will not extend in a simple linear fashion to other small rocky objects, nor will the optical surfaces of those objects all be affected to the same degree by each process. The major factors that will control the relative efficacy of a possible mechanism include the efficiency of ejecta retention and the degree to which the regolith materials experience multiple events (primarily a function of body size, escape velocity, and impactor velocities); the mean duration of typical regolith particle exposure at the optical surface and within reach of the micrometeorite, cosmic ray, solar wind, or UV fluxes (a function of the rate and scale of regolith mixing, production, and removal processes); the incident flux of solar (low energy) cosmic rays, solar wind, or UV radiation (inverse square of heliocentric distance) or of galactic (high energy) cosmic rays (slowly increasing flux with heliocentric distance); and the compositional and mineralogical nature of the surface being affected. In general, those processes that depend upon either the retention of impact ejecta or on the presence of multigenerational regoliths should be substantially less effective on smaller bodies with lower escape velocities. However, there are important exceptions to this generalization. For example, a process that involves the hypervelocity impact of small particles into a fine-grained regolith may be able to effectively retain highly shocked or melted material due to the nature of shock wave propagation in such a heterogeneous material.

Many main belt asteroids cluster around certain values of semi-major axis (a), inclination (i), and eccentricity (e). Hirayama was the first to notice these concentrations which he interpreted as evidence of disruptions of larger parent bodies. He called these clusters 'asteroid families'. The term 'families' is increasingly reserved for genetic associations to distinguish them from clusters of unknown or purely dynamical origin (e.g. the Phocaea cluster). Members of a genetic asteroid family represent fragments derived from various depths within the original parent planetesimal. Thus, family members offer the potential for direct examination of the interiors of parent bodies which have undergone metamorphism and differentiation similar to that occurring in the inaccessible interiors of terrestrial planets. The differentiation similar to that occurring in the inaccessible interiors of terrestrial planets. The condition that genetic family members represent the fragments of a parent object provides a critical test of whether an association (cluster in proper element space) is a genetic family. Compositions (types and relative abundances of materials) of family members must permit the reconstruction of a compositionally plausible parent body. The compositions of proposed family members can be utilized to test the genetic reality of the family and to determine the type and degree of internal differentiation within the parent planetesimal. The interpretation of the S-class mineralogy provides a preliminary evaluation of family memberships. Detailed mineralogical and petrological analysis was done based on the reflectance spectra of 39 S-type asteroids. The result is a division of the S-asteroid class into seven subtypes based on compositional differences. These subtypes, designated S(I) to S(VII), correspond to surface silicate assemblages ranging from monomineralic olivine (dunites) through olivine-pyroxene mixtures to pure pyroxene or pyroxene-feldspar mixtures (basalts). The most general conclusion is that the S-asteroids cannot be treated as a single group of objects without greatly oversimplifying their properties. Each S-subtype needs to be treated as an independent group with a distinct evolutionary history.

Most compositional characterizations of the minor planets are derived from analysis of visible and near-infrared reflectance spectra. However, such spectra are derived from light which has only interacted with a very thin surface layer. Although regolith processes are assumed to mix all near-surface lithologic units into this layer, it has been proposed that space weathering processes can alter this surface layer to obscure the spectral signature of the bedrock lithology. It has been proposed that these spectral alteration processes are much less pronounced on asteroid surfaces than on the lunar surface, but the possibility of major spectral alteration of asteroidal optical surfaces has been invoked to reconcile S-asteroids with ordinary chondrites. The reflectance spectra of a large subset of the S-asteroid population have been analyzed in a systematic investigation of the mineralogical diversity within the S-class. In this sample, absorption band depth is a strong function of asteroid diameter. The S-asteroid band depths are relatively constant for objects larger than 100 km and increase linearly by factor of two toward smaller sizes (approximately 40 km). Although the S-asteroid surface materials includes a diverse variety of silicate assemblages, ranging from dunites to basalts, all compositional subtypes of the S-asteroids conform to this trend. The A-, R-, and V-type asteroids which are primarily silicate assemblages (as opposed to the metal-silicate mixtures of most S-asteroids) follow a parallel but displaced trend. Some sort of textural or regolith equilibrium appears to have been attained in the optical surfaces of asteroids larger than about 100 km diameter but not on bodies below this size. The relationships between absorption band depth, spectral slope, surface albedo and body size provide an intriguing insight into the nature of the optical surfaces of the S-asteroids and space weathering on these objects.

One of the major goals of asteroid investigators has been to determine the source bodies of the meteorites, and, thus, to provide the needed spatial context. However, despite careful investigation of many of these asteroids, no specific mainbelt asteroidal parent bodies for particular meteorites have yet been identified. Results are reported that represent the first direct link of a set of meteorites (the aubrites or enstatite achondrites) back to a particular source region in the asteroid belt (the Hungaria zone of the innermost belt located at a heliocentric distance of about 1.9 AU (1.9 times the Earth's distance from the Sun)). Since most asteroids in the belt are still located near their original heliocentric formation distances, this link allows the composition and temperature of the solar nebula to be determined at a specific distance from the Sun during the time of planetesimal formation. Orbital considerations suggest that 3103 could be derived from the Hungaria zone. However, the spectral gype of 3103 makes such a source probable. The Hungaria zone is the only region of the asteroid belt where E-type asteroids are common. E-type objects constitute about 55 percent of the classified Hungaria population. Although a more detailed investigation of the dynamical evolution of this object is needed, it appears highly probable that 3103 1982BB was derived from the Hungaria region of the innermost asteroid belt, that it is a fragment of the collisional breakup of an E-object near 1.9 AU, and escaped the mainbelt via the nu sup 16 resonance.

Six asteroid classes (types V, E, A, R, M, S) are composed primarily of differentiated assemblages produced by igneous processes within their parent planetesimals. These are identified by surface materials which deviate from a chondritic composition to a degree that require igneous chemical fractionation processes. There are large variations among these igneous asteroids in the peak temperatures attained, in the efficiency of magmatic phase separation, and in the depth within the original parent body exposed at the present surface. These variations provide important constraints on the nature of asteroidal heating events, on the differentiation processes within small planetary bodies, and on the disruption of those parent bodies. Variations due to depth within the parent body and due to degree of magmatic differentiation are detailed.

High-resolution visible and near-infrared diffuse reflectance spectra of mafic silicates can be deconvolved to yield quantitative information concerning mineral mixture properties, and the results can be directly applied to remotely sensed data. Spectral reflectance measurements of laboratory mixtures of olivine, orthophyroxene, and clinopyroxene with known chemistries, phase abundances, and particle size distributions have been utilized to develop correlations between spectral properties and the physicochemical parameters of the samples. A large number of mafic silicate spectra were measured and examined for systematic variations in spectral properties as a function of chemistry, phase abundance, and particle size. Three classes of spectral parameters (ratioed, absolute, and wavelength) were examined for any correlations. Each class is sensitive to particular mafic silicate properties. Spectral deconvolution techniques have been developed for quantifying, with varying degrees of accuracy, the assemblage properties (chemistry, phase abundance, and particle size).

One of the objectives of the present paper is related to a definition of the spectral contribution of the nickel-iron metal component in meteoritic assemblages. Another objective is the elucidation of the chemical, physical, and petrographic properties of the metal grains which affect the spectral signature in asteroid surface materials. It is pointed out that an improved understanding of the spectral and physical properties of metal in asteroid regoliths should permit an improved characterization of these objects, and, in particular, a better evaluation of the differentiated or undifferentiated nature of the S-type and M-type asteroids. Attention is given to the spectra of iron and nickel-iron metals, the spectral effects of metal in chondritic assemblages, the spectral reflectance of metal grains in ordinary chondrites, the nature of the surfaces of chondritic metal grains, the origin of coats on chondritic metal grains, and the fragmentation of metal on asteroid surfaces.

The diversity of reflectance spectra noted among near-earth asteroids that were compared with selected asteroids, planets and satellites to determine possible source regions is indicative of different mineralogical composition and, accordingly, of more than one source region. Spectral signatures that are similar to those of main belt asteroids support models deriving some of these asteroids from the 5:2 Kirkwood gap and the Flora family, by way of gravitational perturbations. The differences in composition found between near-earth asteroids and planetary and satellite surfaces are in keeping with theoretical arguments that such bodies should not be sources. While some near-earth asteroids furnish portions of the earth's meteorite flux, other sources must also contribute.

Telescopic observations have recently revealed the existence of a new class of asteroids whose surfaces show the spectral signature of abundant olivine. The mineralogy of a well-observed example (446 Aeternitas) is discussed and the implications for the origins of the olivine-rich meteorites and the thermal evolution of asteroids outlined.

In order to investigate the composition of the Iapetus dark material and the reasons for its peculiar distribution, telescopic observations, laboratory simulations, and photogeological studies are conducted. New telescopic spectra of superior accuracy and wavelength coverage for leading and trailing hemispheres are obtained over the range 0.3-2.6 microns. A mixing model is used to correct the leading-hemisphere spectra for the presence of polarcaps. It is shown that the spectral curve of pure Iapetus dark material is highly reddened in the visible, but gradually flattens near 2.0 microns. Structures along the bright-dark boundary, visible in Voyager 2 images, are inconsistent with an eruptive origin for the dark material; this zone is probably the region of grazing impacts of dust spiraling from Phoebe and the dark material is probably a minor component of the ice-dominated surface concentrated in the upper regolith produced by Phoebe-dust bombardment. An Iapetus-like bombardment regime may account for the hemispheric dichotomy of regolith properties on Callisto.

Studies of the trajectory of the Galileo mission to Jupiter recently revealed that the spacecraft can pass close to one of the largest asteroids (#29 Amphitrite). NASA has therefore altered the mission plan of the Galileo spacecraft to include a possible close flyby of Amphitrite in early December 1986, if the condition of the spacecraft allows. If this option is actually implemented, Amphitrite will become the only asteroid for which any high-spatial resolution images and reflection spectra will be available. To evaluate the value of this data and place Amphitrite in the context of the more than 600 asteroids for which some compositional information exists. Existing data was reexamined, new telescopic spectra of Amphitrite were obtained, and simulated Galileo data sets were constructed.

The surface material and the surface material heterogeneities of the asteroid Flora are characterized using the best available data sets and the most sophisticated interpretive calibrations. Five spectrally derived mineralogic and patrologic properties of the surface assemblage of Flora which are relevant to whether this body is a differentiated or undifferentiated object are considered: bulk mineralogy, mafic mineral assemblage, metallic phase, pyroxene composition and structural type, and mineralogic variation. All of these properties indicate that Flora is a differentiated body. Flora is probably the residual core of an intensely heated, thermally evolved, and magnetically differentiated planetesimal which was subsequently disrupted. The present surface sample layers formed at or near the core-mantle boundary in the parent body.

The mineralogy and petrology of 17 near-earth asteroids are characterized using reflectance spectroscopy with ground-based telescopes. Assuming the surfaces are composed of cosmically abundant materials, the presence of certain mineralogical species can be determined from diagnostic absorption features and spectral characteristics which have been studied under known laboratory conditions and understood in terms of crystal-field theory. With one possible exception, the surface composition of near-earth asteroids consists of common rock-forming minerals such as olivine, pyroxene, and phyllosilicates. Opaque components are present but cannot be mineralogically identified with existing experimental data. The spectrum of 2201 Oljato cannot be interpreted in terms of common rock-forming minerals and is examined for cometary features because its high orbital eccentricity suggests a possible relation to comets, but no common cometary features are identified. The predominance of mafic silicate absorption features in spectra of near-earth asteroids (compared to the majority of main-belt asteroids) may be a primary compositional feature or may be the signature of relatively fresher asteroid material.

Spectrophotometry of the Saturn satellite Iapetus in the 0.3-1.0 micron wavelength range shows the dark hemisphere to be very red, similar to a few asteroids and the earth's moon, but with no spectral features implying olivine or pyroxene. Near-IR spectrophotometry in the 1.4-2.5 and 3.0-3.8 micron ranges shows water ice absorption bands that may be due to the polar caps' intrusion into the dark hemisphere. Three hypotheses for the formation of the dark hemisphere are discussed in light of the observational data, and it is found most likely that debris from Phoebe or other unknown outer satellites of Saturn impacts the dark hemisphere of Iapetus as Poynting-Robertson drag causes the debris to spiral toward Saturn. The high velocity impacts preferentially remove ice from the satellite's surface, yielding the enrichment of included carbonaceous material intrinsic to Iapetus.

Measurements of the spectral reflectance (0.4-2.5 microns) of three diogenite meteorites found in Antarctica are examined. Comparisons are made with previous measurements of diogenites in order to correlate the mineralogy and petrography with the spectral characteristics that can also be measured on solar system objects of unknown composition. Even though the Antarctic diogenites have the same spectral characteristics as other diogenites, there are measurable differences between all diogenite spectra. Bands caused by spin-forbidden transitions of Fe(2+) ions in pyroxene, which are identified for the first time in reflectance spectra of powdered samples, are revealed in an analysis of the spectra into sums of Gaussian components. It is shown from these laboratory measurements that spectral reflectance measurements of asteroids and other solar system objects made with the visible CVF (circular variable filter) spectrometer used for laboratory measurements can provide useful information on their surface composition.

The depth of the absorption feature near 1 micron in the reflectance spectra of immature lunar soils is determined primarily by the amount of pyroxene present in the soil. As a soil matures, the agglutinitic glass content increases and the Fe(2+) glass band dominates the absorption feature. An empirical relationship between the 1 micron band depth and the percentage of magnetic agglutinates, and hence maturity, is demonstrated for mature highland soils of a given composition. A similar variation of 1 micron band depth is observed in the telescopic spectra of lunar highland craters and is positively correlated with the surface maturity as determined by the small-impact erosion model of Soderblom (1970). Knowledge of both maturity and the 1 micron band depth of a lunar surface feature allows compositional information to be derived.

The results are presented of spectral reflectance measurements on more than 150 individual meteorite specimens representing essentially all types and subtypes of meteorites. A brief review is provided of the nature of the compositional information contained in a reflection spectrum of a natural material. Attention is given to the spectral reflectance characteristics of mineral assemblages, and to meteorite class spectral characteristics.

Minerals partly composing the surfaces of 14 asteroids are determined by using asteroid reflectance spectra and optical properties of meteorites and other materials. Individual electronic absorption features are identified in the asteroids' spectra. The energies, relative strengths, and shapes of these features are interpreted by using laboratory and theoretical studies. Analysis of the initial 14 asteroid reflectance spectra indicates the presence of the following types of surface materials: six carbonaceous chondrite-like; two stony-iron-like (metal/silicate ratio approximately equal to 1); one iron meteorite-like; one basaltic achondrite-like; and four silicate-metal assemblages (metal/silicate ratio approximately equal to 0.25). These results support the conclusion that the asteroid belt is a source of at least some meteoritic material, and they show a relation between certain asteroids and certain classes of meteorites.

Visible and near-infrared reflectance spectra are presented for 277 asteroids. These represent the results of an 8-yr program and constitute all spectra available in 1979. There are approximately 80 recognizably different spectral types among the asteroids surveyed. Relatively few of these can be explained as mixtures of C- and S-type materials on individual asteroids, although Eos family members may be an exception.

On the basis of remote-sensing evidence and meteorite studies, a substantial fraction of small asteroids in near-earth space should contain abundant volatile (water, carbon, carbon compounds) and/or free metal (nickel-iron) materials. Although there are only about 40 known earth-approaching asteroids, this number could be increased by at least an order of magnitude in a few years by a dedicated search program with a large telescope (48 in. Schmidt). A discovery rate of 20 objects/yr could be expected from a facility costing about $3 million to establish. Relatively high-resolution, broad-wavelength coverage reflectance spectra could be made for many of these objects with a large telescope and instruments under development. Such spectra are necessary for detailed mineralogic, characterizations of these asteroids. Low-resolution survey survey spectra with similar wavelength coverage (UBVRIJHK filters) would provide useful characterizations of fainter objects.

The use of general and specific diagnostic spectral features and parameters to interpret most of the published high-quality reflectance spectra of asteroids is discussed. Such diagnostics are shown to provide the most complete and sophisticated mineralogically and petrologically based interpretation of the asteroid surface materials. Previous investigations of asteroid surface materials are exhaustively reviewed, emphasizing the general approaches employed, sources of information, previous characterizations of asteroid surface materials, and asteroid spectral groups. The interpretive methodology is then applied to spectral reflectance data for many individual members of the various spectral groups. A range of mineral assemblages similar to certain meteorite classes is identified, and evidence is presented for a selective high-temperature event that melted certain asteroid parent bodies and permitted their differentiation as some function of distance from the sun or the protosun and of the size of the protoasteroid. Possible candidates are proposed for the source bodies of different meteorite groups.
