Concentrated colloidal suspensions of nanorods often exhibit liquid-crystalline (LC) behavior. The transition to a nematic LC phase, with long-range orientational order of the particles, is usually well captured by Onsager's theory for hard rods, at least qualitatively. The theory shows how the volume fraction at the transition decreases with increasing aspect ratio of the rods. It also explains that the long-range electrostatic repulsive interaction occurring between rods stabilized by their surface charge can significantly increase their effective diameter, resulting in a decrease of the volume fraction at the transition, as compared to sterically stabilized rods. Here, we report on a system of ligand-stabilized LaPO4 nanorods, of aspect ratio around 11, dispersed in apolar medium exhibiting the counter-intuitive observation that the onset of nematic self-assembly occurs at an extremely low volume fraction of around 0.25%, which is lower than observed (around 3%) with the same particles when charge-stabilized in polar solvent. Furthermore, the nanorod volume fraction at the transition increases with increasing concentration of ligands, in a similar way as in polar media where increasing the ionic strength leads to surface-charge screening. This peculiar system was investigated by dynamic light scattering, Fourier-Transform Infra-Red spectroscopy, zetametry, electron microscopy, polarized-light microscopy, photoluminescence measurements, and X-ray scattering. Based on these experimental data, we formulate several tentative scenarios that might explain this unexpected phase behavior. However, at this stage, its full understanding remains a pending theoretical challenge. Nevertheless, this study shows that dispersing anisotropic nanoparticles in an apolar solvent may sometimes lead to spontaneous ordering events that defy our intuitive ideas about colloidal systems.

The search for miniaturized components for nonlinear optical processes needs a way to overcome the efficiency loss due to the effective size reduction of the active medium. We investigate here a combination of a nanosized nonlinear dielectric crystal and metallic nanoantennas that benefits from both the intrinsic nonlinear conversion efficiency of the nonlinear medium and the local-field enhancement of plasmonic resonances in metallic nanostructures. Careful comparison between experiments and numerical simulations reveals that the observed 10 to 1000 fold enhancement in Second Harmonic Generation intensity between isolated elements and their hybrid structure can be attributed unequivocally to the field enhancement effect of plasmonic resonances on the nonlinear crystal for gold - crystal structures, while the enhancement observed in aluminum-based hybrid structures is attributed to linear dielectric effect on the plasmonic antennas., Comment: 5 figures

Rare-earth phosphors exhibit unique luminescence polarization features originating from the anisotropic symmetry of the emitter ion's chemical environment. However, to take advantage of this peculiar property, it is necessary to control and measure the ensemble orientation of the host particles with a high degree of precision. Here, we show a methodology to obtain the photoluminescence polarization of Eu-doped LaPO4 nano rods assembled in an electrically modulated liquid-crystalline phase. We measure Eu3+ emission spectra for the three main optimal configurations ({\sigma}, {\pi} and {\alpha}, depending on the direction of observation and the polarization axes) and use them as a reference for the nano rod orientation analysis. Based on the fact that flowing nano rods tend to orient along the shear strain profile, we use this orientation analysis to measure the local shear rate in a flowing liquid. Lanthanum phosphate (LaPO4) nanorods dispersed in the non-aqueous solvent of ethylene glycol form a system exhibiting large intrinsic birefringence, high colloidal stability and the ability to self-organize into liquid crystalline phases. In order to probe the electro-optical response of these rod dispersions we study here the electric-field-induced birefringence, also called Kerr effect, for a concentrated isotropic liquid state with an in-plane a.c. sinusoidal electric field, in conditions of directly applied (electrodes in contact with the sample) or externally applied (electrodes outside the sample cell) fields. Performing an analysis of the electric polarizability of our rod-like particles in the framework of Maxwell-Wagner-OKonski theory, we account quantitatively for the coupling between the induced steady-state birefringence and the electric field as a function of the voltage frequency for both sample geometries. The switching time of this non-aqueous transparent system has been measured, and combined with its high Kerr coefficients and its features of optically isotropic offstate and athermal phase behavior, this represents a promising proof-of-concept for the integration of anisotropic nanoparticle suspensions into a new generation of electro-optical devices., Comment: To be published in "Soft Matter"

The mechanical properties of azobenzene-containing polymer films are statistically measured by instrumented nanoindentation experiment in the dark and under illumination in the absorption band of the azobenzene molecules, with special emphasis on the creep behavior and recoverability. We use Dispersed Red 1 azobenzene derivatives, which remain in the stable trans isomer state in the dark and form a dynamical photo-stationary state between cis and trans isomer under illumination. Light induces a higher change in the film hardness than in the elastic stiffness, revealing the occurrence of a visco-plastic behavior of the film under illumination. We investigated the ability of diamond nanoparticles (nanodiamonds, NDs) to deliver small interfering RNA (siRNA) in Ewing sarcoma cells, in the perspective of in vivo anti-cancer nucleic acid drug delivery. siRNA was adsorbed onto NDs previously coated with cationic polymer. Cell uptake of NDs has been demonstrated by taking advantage of NDs intrinsic fluorescence coming from embedded color center defects. Cell toxicity of these coated NDs was shown to be low. Consistent with the internalization efficacy, we have shown a specific inhibition of EWS/Fli-1 gene expression at the mRNA and protein level by the ND vectorized siRNA in a serum containing medium.

We demonstrate the association of two-photon nonlinear microscopy with balanced homodyne detection for investigating second harmonic radiation properties at nanoscale dimensions. Variation of the relative phase between second-harmonic and fundamental beams is retrieved, as a function of the absolute orientation of the nonlinear emitters. Sensitivity down to approximately 3.2 photon/s in the spatio-temporal mode of the local oscillator is obtained. We report the full implementation of a quantum cryptography protocol using a stream of single photon pulses generated by a stable and efficient source operating at room temperature. The single photon pulses are emitted on demand by a single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color center in a diamond nanocrystal. The quantum bit error rate is less that 4.6% and the secure bit rate is 9500 bits/s. The overall performances of our system reaches a domain where single photons have a measurable advantage over an equivalent system based on attenuated light pulses., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We report on the realization of a stable solid state room temperature source for single photons. It is based on the fluorescence of a single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color center in a diamond nanocrystal. Antibunching has been observed in the fluorescence light under both continuous and pulsed excitation. Our source delivers 2*10^4 single-photon pulses per second at an excitation repetition rate of 10 MHz. The quantum properties of the fluorescence light emitted by diamond nanocrystals containing a single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) colored center is investigated. We have observed photon antibunching with very low background light. This system is therefore a very good candidate for the production of single photon on demand.
