Abstract

HERMES Pathfinder is an in-orbit demonstration consisting of a constellation of six 3U cubesats hosting simple but innovative X-ray/gamma-ray detectors for the monitoring of cosmic high-energy transients. HERMES-PF, funded by ASI and by the EC Horizon 2020 grant, is scheduled for launch in Q1 2025. An identical X-ray/gamma-ray detector is hosted by the Australian 6U cubesat SpIRIT, launched on December 1st 2023. The main objective of HERMES-PF/SpIRIT is to demonstrate that high energy cosmic transients can be detected efficiently by miniatured hardware and localized using triangulation techniques. The HERMES-PF X-ray/gamma-ray detector is made by 60 GAGG:Ce scintillator crystals and 12 2x5 silicon drift detector (SDD) mosaics, used to detect both the cosmic X-rays directly and the optical photons produced by gamma-ray interactions with the scintillator crystals. This design provides a unique broad band spectral coverage from a few keV to a few MeV. Furthermore, the use of fast GAGG:Ce crystals and small SDD cells allows us to reach an exquisite time resolution better than a microsecond. We present a progress report on the missions focusing the discussion on the scientific innovation of the project and on the main lessons learned during the project development including: the importance and the challenges of using distributed architectures to achieve ambitious scientific objectives; the importance of developing critical technologies under science agreements for the realization of high-performing but low-cost payloads; best use of COTS technologies in scientific missions. We finally discuss the prospects of applying these concepts for the creation of an all-sky, all-time monitor to search for the high-energy counterparts of gravitational wave events that Advanced LIGO/Virgo/Kagra will find at the end of this decade and the Einstein Telescope during the 2030s., Comment: proceedings of the 75th International Astronautical Congress (IAC), Milan, Italy, 14-18 October 2024

Abstract

Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) bridge relativistic astrophysics and multi-messenger astronomy. Space-based gamma/X-ray wide field detectors have proven essential to detect and localize the highly variable GRB prompt emission, which is also a counterpart of gravitational wave events. We study the capabilities to detect long and short GRBs by the High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites (HERMES) Pathfinder (HP) and SpIRIT, namely a swarm of six 3U CubeSats to be launched in early 2025, and a 6U CubeSat launched on December 1st 2023. We also study the capabilities of two advanced configurations of swarms of >8 satellites with improved detector performances (HERMES Constellations). The HERMES detectors, sensitive down to ~2-3 keV, will be able to detect faint/soft GRBs which comprise X-ray flashes and high redshift bursts. By combining state-of-the-art long and short GRB population models with a description of the single module performance, we estimate that HP will detect ~195^{+22}_{-21} long GRBs (3.4^{+0.3}_{-0.8} at redshift z>6) and ~19^{+5}_{-3} short GRBs per year. The larger HERMES Constellations under study can detect between ~1300 and ~3000 long GRBs per year and between ~160 and ~400 short GRBs per year, depending on the chosen configuration, with a rate of long GRBs above z>6 between 30 and 75 per year. Finally, we explore the capabilities of HERMES to detect short GRBs as electromagnetic counterparts of binary neutron star (BNS) mergers detected as gravitational signals by current and future ground-based interferometers. Under the assumption that the GRB jets are structured, we estimate that HP can provide up to 1 (14) yr^{-1} joint detections during the fifth LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA observing run (Einstein Telescope single triangle 10 km arm configuration). Abstract

In the quest for climate neutrality in the aviation industry by 2050, technology development is one of the main pathways for Airbus. Owing to their high efficiency and current density, use of superconducting DC and AC distribution lines are a potential enabler for fully electric propulsion in a longer range aircraft, in particular in the scenario where liquid hydrogen provides a cold source on board of the aircraft. The ground-based Advanced Superconducting and Cryogenic Experimental power traiN Demonstrator (ASCEND) at Airbus intends to demonstrate the potential and feasibility of a cryogenic and superconducting powertrain as a breakthrough electric propulsion solution on future electric aircraft. A direct current distribution network is used in a generic propulsion system to transfer 500 kW power from the DC supply to an electrical converter, which transforms the energy into an alternating voltage/current to drive the superconducting motor. A relatively low voltage level of 300 V, and a current of 1700 A, is chosen to optimize the safety and installation in a future aircraft by operating at relatively low voltage. The DC link consists of a 10 m long two-pole superconducting Conductor on Round Core (CORC) cable, and demountable current leads, that transfer the power from the room temperature environment to the cryogenically cooled motor control unit. Downstream of this unit a 3-phase AC link operating at 500 Hz delivers power to a superconducting motor. Both the AC and DC links are cooled with a flow of subcooled LN2. The components of the DC and AC links have been designed, manufactured and recently integrated into the ASCEND test bench in Ottobrunn, Germany. We present the powering of the DC link up to nominal current, as well as commissioning and integration experience.

7. Calculation and Measurement of Transport AC Loss of ReBCO CORC Cables for Electric Aircraft

Abstract

This paper investigates transport AC loss in CORC cables for the ground-based demonstrator ASCEND at Airbus, which studies the feasibility of a superconducting powertrain for electric aircraft. The demonstrator includes a three-phase AC link consisting of three parallel cables operating at 500 Hz and 2350 A peak current. The transport AC loss of the three-phase cable is estimated using a 2D model assuming equal current in all tapes. The model predicts an AC loss of 40 W at 77.5 K and 0.4 W at 65 K. A second model is proposed, which computes the current distribution between the tapes in a single cable using mutual inductance matrices for helical tape conductors. This model predicts that, at 500 Hz, the outer two layers of a CORC cable carry a disproportionate fraction of the current. This will lead to additional AC loss if the critical current in the outer layers is exceeded. AC transport loss was measured on single CORC cables. Both models significantly underestimate the measured loss. Also, a frequency-dependent quench current below the DC critical current was observed at 48 Hz and 96 Hz.

Abstract

HERMES-TP/SP (High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites Technologic and Scientific Pathfinder) is a constellation of six 3U nano-satellites hosting simple but innovative X-ray detectors, characterized by a large energy band and excellent temporal resolution, and thus optimized for the monitoring of Cosmic High Energy transients such as Gamma Ray Bursts and the electromagnetic counterparts of Gravitational Wave Events, and for the determination of their positions. The projects are funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research and by the Italian Space Agency, and by the European Union Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program under Grant Agreement No. 821896. HERMES-TP/SP is an in-orbit demonstration, that should be tested starting from 2022. Abstract

The HERMES-TP/SP (High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites -- Technologic and Scientific Pathfinder) is an in-orbit demonstration of the so-called distributed astronomy concept. Conceived as a mini-constellation of six 3U nano-satellites hosting a new miniaturized detector, HERMES-TP/SP aims at the detection and accurate localisation of bright high-energy transients such as Gamma-Ray Bursts. The large energy band, the excellent temporal resolution and the wide field of view that characterize the detectors of the constellation represent the key features for the next generation high-energy all-sky monitor with good localisation capabilities that will play a pivotal role in the future of Multi-messenger Astronomy. In this work, we will describe in detail the temporal techniques that allow the localisation of bright transient events taking advantage of their almost simultaneous observation by spatially spaced detectors. Moreover, we will quantitatively discuss the all-sky monitor capabilities of the HERMES Pathfinder as well as its achievable accuracies on the localisation of the detected Gamma-Ray Bursts., 19 pages, 13 figures, Proceedings of SPIE Astronomical Telescopes and Instrumentation 2020

Abstract

HERMES (High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites) Technological and Scientific pathfinder is a space borne mission based on a LEO constellation of nano-satellites. The 3U CubeSat buses host new miniaturized detectors to probe the temporal emission of bright high-energy transients such as Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). Fast transient localization, in a field of view of several steradians and with arcmin-level accuracy, is gained by comparing time delays among the same event detection epochs occurred on at least 3 nano-satellites. With a launch date in 2022, HERMES transient monitoring represents a keystone capability to complement the next generation of gravitational wave experiments. In this paper we will illustrate the HERMES payload design, highlighting the technical solutions adopted to allow a wide-energy-band and sensitive X-ray and gamma-ray detector to be accommodated in a CubeSat 1U volume together with its complete control electronics and data handling system., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures. Abstract

GrailQuest (Gamma-ray Astronomy International Laboratory for Quantum Exploration of Space-Time) is an ambitious astrophysical mission concept that uses a fleet of small satellites whose main objective is to search for a dispersion law for light propagation in vacuo. Within Quantum Gravity theories, different models for space-time quantization predict relative discrepancies of the speed of photons w.r.t. the speed of light that depend on the ratio of the photon energy to the Planck energy. This ratio is as small as 10-23 for photons in the γ- ray band (100 keV). Therefore, to detect this effect, light must propagate over enormous distances and the experiment must have extraordinary sensitivity. Gamma-Ray Bursts, occurring at cosmological distances, could be used to detect this tiny signature of space-time granularity. This can be obtained by coherently combine a huge number of small instruments distributed in space to act as a single detector of unprecedented effective area. This is the first example of high-energy distributed astronomy: a new concept of modular observatory of huge overall collecting area consisting in a fleet of small satellites in low orbits, with sub-microsecond time resolution and wide energy band (keV-MeV). The enormous number of collected photons will allow to effectively search these energy dependent delays. Moreover, GrailQuest will allow to perform temporal triangulation of impulsive events with arc-second positional accuracies: an extraordinary sensitive X-ray/Gamma all-sky monitor crucial for hunting the elusive electromagnetic counterparts of Gravitational Waves, that will play a paramount role in the future of Multi-messenger Astronomy. A pathfinder of GrailQuest is already under development through the HERMES (High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites) project: a fleet of six 3U cube-sats to be launched by the end of 2022.
