We have documented quarries in Miocene limestone in the Vienna Basin (Austria), Hundsheim Mountains, Leitha Mountains and Rust Hills in high-resolution airborne laser scanning data and orthophotos aiming for a diachronic quarry inventory since the Roman period. The study region was divided into 6 quarry regions and the quarries of the whole study area as well as each separate region were analyzed concerning different rock types, mean, minimum and maximum quarry area and development in the different maps. Age information have been sought from historical maps, historical photography and paintings as well as quarry face graffiti. In total, 658 quarries, possible quarries and shallow quarries have been outlined in the detailed digital terrain models, which were compared with 453 quarries indicated in four generations of historical maps between the years 1754 to 1872. The numbers of quarries are generally low in the Walter map (1754–1756), the First Military Survey (1773–1785) and Second Military Survey (1809–1846) but increase tremendously in the maps of the Third Military Survey (1872–1873). Most old quarries were quarried also in subsequent periods, commonly destroying virtually all pre-existing traces. According to our results two types of quarries represent highly interesting targets for more detailed studies in the search for Roman quarries: (i) areas in historical maps with suspicious uneven terrain, which have never been outlined as quarries and areas that have been mapped as “old quarries” – especially in the Third Military Survey; examples represent areas northwest and west of Pfaffenberg in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg (Lower Austria), “Gruibert” in Winden am See (Burgenland) and “Hoher Berg” in Stotzing (Burgenland); (ii) Shallow quarries, which neither appear in historical maps nor in the mining archive of the Geological Survey of Austria like the one from the saddle between Pfaffenberg and Hundsheimer Berg.

Zwei neue Inschriftfragmente aus Carnuntum weisen das erste Mal die Formulierung domo Iudaeus auf. Die Funde stammen aus dem Ende des 1. / Anfang des 2. Jahrhunderts. Die eine Grabinschrift wurde einem Handler ( negotians ) namens M. Mulvius gesetzt, die andere P. Aemilius Verecundus und seinem Sohn P. Aemilius [-]vus, errichtet von dem Enkel bzw. Sohn. Es wird der Frage, ob domo Iudaeus als Herkunftsangabe „aus Iudaea“ bedeutet oder ob damit eine Zugehorigkeit zum Judentum ausgedruckt werden soll, aus epigraphischer und ikonographischer Sicht nachgegangen. Mehrere Anzeichen sprechen dafur, das hier keine Juden genannt gewesen sein durften.

Die meisten der aus der Provinz Noricum stammenden römerzeitlichen Werkstücke aus Stein waren ursprünglich Teile von Grabbauten. Im vorliegenden Manuskript wird der Versuch unternommen, die architektonische Form dieser Grabbauten zu rekonstruieren, eine Typologie zu erarbeiten und daraus historische sowie kunsthistorische Schussfolgerungen zu ziehen. Aus der Form der Werkstücke, den technischen Bearbeitungsspuren sowie der Struktur und dem Inhalt der plastischen Darstellungen und Reliefs können Informationen für die Verwendung dieser Bauteile im architektonischen Zusammenhang gewonnen werden. Anhand eines Vergleichs mit den ganz erhaltenen norischen Grabbauten aus Sempeter deren Rekonstruktion einer ausführlichen kritischen Beurteilung unterzogen wird - und mit Grabbauten Italiens sowie anderer römischer Provinzen ist es in vielen Fallen möglich, einen Rekonstruktionsvorschlag zu erstellen. Zusätzliche Anhaltspunkte werden aus einer Zusammenstellung aller Grabungsbefunde gewonnen, bei denen bearbeitetes Steinmaterial vorkommt. Auf diesem Weg wird erstmalig ein Überblick über die in der Provinz Noricum vorhandenen Grabbautypen gewonnen. Die erstellte Typologie erlaubt auch eine Einordnung der meisten nicht rekonstruierbaren Einzelteile. Insgesamt werden 227 Werkstücke oder Werkstückgruppen im Katalogteil I den Grabbautypen 'Aedicula', 'Baldachin', 'Altar', Weiler', 'Gemauerter Grabbau', 'Tumulus' oder 'Umfassung' zugewiesen, teilweise rekonstruiert und Großteils in zeichnerischen und fotografischen Abbildungen präsentiert. Die 414 Teile des Katalogteils II sind nicht eindeutig einem bestimmten Grabbautyp zuweisbar, doch kann in vielen Fallen ihre Position am Grabbau bestimmt werden. Katalogteil. III umfasst 44 Grabungsbefunde. Die Auswertung des im Katalogteil vorgelegten Materials geht auf die Einordnung der einzelnen Grabbautypen im architektur- und kunstgeschichtlichen Zusammenhang ein. Die chronologische Entwicklung und die spezifische norische Ausprägung der einzelnen Typen wird besprochen. Anhand der Inschriften und der Reliefdarstellungen wird der etwaige Zusammenhang von Grabbautypus und gesellschaftlicher Stellung der Grabinhaber untersucht. Mit Hilfe von Verbreitungskarten wird schließlich die unterschiedliche Häufigkeit bestimmter Typen in den einzelnen Regionen der Provinz herausgearbeitet und hinterfragt. Im tabellarischen Anhang I sind aussagekräftige Maße und Proportionen bestimmter Architekturglieder aufgelistet. Anhang II fährt diejenigen Grabbauten oder Grabbauteile an, deren Typus bestimmt werden kann und deren Inhaber zumindest ansatzweise bekannt sind. Ein umfangreicher Abbildungsapparat verfolgt den Zweck, die vorgeschlagenen Rekonstruktionen und Einordnungen nachvollziehbar zu machen, indem auch die Stoß- und Ladeflächen samt ihrer technischen Details dokumentiert sind. Die rekonstruierten Grabbauten werden anschaulich dargestellt, jedoch ohne die Grenzen zwischen Originalbestand und Rekonstruktion zu verwischen., Most of the stone blocks left from roman time in the province of Noricum were initially part of funerary monuments. The aim of this book is to reconstruct the architectural form of these monumental tombs, to develope a typological classification and to draw conclusions concerning the history and the arts of the province. The shape of the blocks and the technical details to observe on the surfaces at the same time as the structure and the representations of the reliefs give us informations about the function of these blocks in an architectural context. By comparison to the well preserved monuments of Sempeter - whose reconstruction is critically reviewed - and to funerary monuments of Italy and other roman provinces, it is possible to propose a reconstruction of numerous monuments in Noricum. A classification of excavated funeral sites including workpieces of stone provides further information. Thus a survey of the different types of funerary monuments existing in roman Noricum is given and most of the recorded stone blocks may be typologically classified. A total of 227 workpieces or groups of workpieces are collected in catalogue L classified as parts of the monument types 'ae&cu1a', 'canopy', 'altar', 'pile', 'masonry construction', 'tumulus' or 'enclosure'. For some of them a theoretical reconstruction is proposed and they are mostly represented by drawings or photographs. The 414 pieces in catalogue 11 may not be determined typologically, but nevertheless allow a discussion of their initial architectural function. Catalogue III includes the evidence of 44 excavated monuments. The analysis of the presented material shows the chronological and regional evolution of the different types of funerary monuments. The evidence given by the inscriptions, the portraits and the reliefs allows to examine the correlation which is possibly existing between the type of monument chosen and the social position of its owner. Finally the geographical spreading and the variabel frequency of the different types in Noricum is shown and discussed. In appendix I some relevant measurements and proportions of architectural elements are listed- Appendix H gives a survey of the monuments with are typologically classified and whose owners are known at least partly.

The currently ongoing project on Stone Monuments and Stone Quarrying in the Carnuntum – Vindobona Area (FWF 26368-G21) focuses on petrological and litho-stratigraphic investigations of well-dated Roman stone objects. The majority of the examined monuments are made from local Neogene limestone varieties, sedimentary breccias and sandstones – lithologies widespread in the surroundings of Carnuntum, the edge of the Vienna Basin and the western margin of the Pannonian Basin. Analyses of historical maps and high resolution airborne laser scans (ALS) are used to detect potential ancient quarry areas, which are ground-checked by geological methods. So far, ancient quarrying areas in the immediate surroundings of Carnuntum and in the Leitha Mountains have been localized, providing deposits of different algal limestones and calcareous arenites. This interdisciplinary approach promises to provide insight, not only into the provenance of stone material but also into matters of transportation, workshops and economic interaction between Carnuntum, Vindobona and the hinterland.
