This article describes two of the most common natural sources of red anthraquinones that have been used since antiquity for textile dyeing and as lake pigments, namely cochineal insect and the roots of Rubia and Relbunium plants. Carminic acid is the main component of carmine, the red colorant obtained from cochineal. Alizarin and purpurin are found in the extracts of Rubia roots, but Relbunium roots contain only purpurin. These red anthraquinones have been identified in a variety of cultural heritage objects. High performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection (HPLC-DAD) is described as the most suitable analytical technique for the identification of these dyestuffs, particularly in micro-samples from textiles or pigment layers in paintings and polychrome sculptures. Finally, application of HPLC-DAD analysis to the identification of lake pigments in micro-samples of mural paintings of two eighteenth century Andean churches in Peru is described.

This work describes the characterization of pigments and ground layers in two paintings by the renowned Argentinian painter Antonio Berni (1905–1981). The studied paintings are “Toledo” and “Figure” from the collection of the Provincial Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe (Argentina). To approach this goal, an integrated investigation comprising in situ X-ray fluorescence measurements by means of a portable system (pXRF), micro-Raman spectroscopy, Attenuated Total Reflection–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM–EDS) was carried out. The results revealed a chromatic palette with inorganic pigments, such as ultramarine blue, cobalt blue, lead white, zinc white, yellow cadmium, and hydrated chromium oxide (viridian), together with a preparation layer consisting of a mixture of earth, lead white, and calcite in “Toledo”. On the other hand, the preparation layer in “Figure” was characterized as lithopone, a mixture of barium sulfate and zinc sulfide. ATR-FTIR-analysis revealed the formation of metallic soaps in both paintings due to the reaction of fatty acids from a drying oil used as a binder with lead and zinc pigments, as confirmed by comparison with the infrared spectra of synthetic lead and zinc soaps. This study contributes to the understanding of Berni’s painting style and the future restoration of both artworks.

In this work, we studied protein binders in micro-samples from mural paintings from two 18th century Colonial Andean churches located in the northernmost region of Chile using a proteomic approach. The protein fraction of the samples was extracted with ammonia following a previously optimized methodology and analyzed by LC–MSMS. We identified collagen as well as egg white and yolk proteins, in accordance with a tempera painting technique. In addition, we detected for the first time the presence of muscle proteins in two of the micro-samples. The collagen and muscle proteins could be ascribed to bovine (Bos taurus) and llama (Vicugna pacos), a domesticated camelid used as food source and for transportation of goods in the Andes since pre-Hispanic times. These findings provide new aspects on the knowledge of old animal glues composition and painting practices in the Andean region with reliable information for restoration and conservation work.

La presente propuesta pretende dar cuenta de las experiencias del equipo interdisciplinario del Centro de Investigación en Arte, Materia y Cultura (IIAC-UNTREF), en el marco del proyecto PICT 2017-1716 “Espacios de pintura y poder: estrategias locales en la producción de imágenes sobre lienzo y muro en los templos del sur andino colonial (fines del siglo XVII-siglo XVIII)”. El objetivo principal de esta investigación es la de poner de relieve las elecciones iconográficas, materiales y técnicas que evidenciarían la circulación de saberes y productos en ese entorno, así como los modos en los que se desarrolló una producción local, vinculada a los artistas y recursos materiales y tecnológicos, consecuente con políticas eclesiásticas de la zona. En este trabajo se presentan algunos aspectos de la visita a los templos que apuntó a la realización de un relevamiento fotográfico extensivo de los sistemas visuales de cada uno y el análisis químico de los materiales que componen sus pinturas murales. Para esto último se contó con un equipo portátil de Espectroscopia de Fluorescencia de Rayos X (FRXp) para determinar la composición elemental de los materiales presentes. La aplicación de este tipo de técnicas, no invasivas y de manera in situ favorece el intercambio de conocimientos entre profesionales de la química, historia del arte y la conservación en un contexto interdisciplinario. Así, resulta posible trabajar en forma integral en los mismos sitios para comprender los materiales y técnicas de producción, el deterioro de los objetos y planificar su conservación, a partir del intercambio activo con las personas y comunidades que son responsables de los templos y patrimonio que alojan.

In this paper, we report the study of proteinaceous binders in samples from a South American Colonial 18th century painting using two complementary mass spectrometry techniques. Before restoration, seven micro-samples were extracted from representative colors of one of the mural paintings located inside the church of Our Lady of Copacabana de Andamarca built in 1723 in Bolivia. Previous analysis by gas chromatography (GC) of the amino acid derivatives of the extracted protein fraction of three of the samples, suggested the presence of animal glue and egg. In this work, we introduce a methodology that combines a protein extraction procedure with a typical treatment for analysis of proteins as tryptic peptides by mass spectrometry. For this study, we applied in the first stage, MALDI-TOF/MS and then, LC-ESI/MS (Orbitrap), an ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry, to achieve more reliability in the identification of the protein binders. By LC-ESI/MS (Orbitrap), we detected several peptides from egg white proteins, particularly ovalbumin, ovotransferrin and lysozyme, and egg yolk proteins, vitellogenin-2 and apolipoprotein B, with high confidence peptides each. In all the samples, the presence of collagen from animal provenance was established by MALDI-TOF/MS and LC-ESI/MS (Orbitrap). To our knowledge, this is the first time that protein binders in Andean paintings are identified without ambiguity by MALDI-TOF/MS and LC-ESI/MS (Orbitrap) mass spectrometry using a proteomic approach. Desde una perspectiva histórica y a partir de la materialidad de dos piezas pictóricas, esta investigación pretende reflexionar sobre materiales, técnicas, usos y costumbres en la pintura colonial. Sobre un corpus de más de cuatrocientas obras del período colonial intervenidas, la propuesta implica analizar los soportes principales y accesorios de dos obras sudamericanas, San Luis Gonzaga y San Juan Nepomuceno, pertenecientes a la Iglesia de San Ignacio en la ciudad de Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Baroque needs to be thought across chronological and geographical divides to connect architecture and dance, painting and natural science, philosophy, sculpture and music (and not in the sense of representations of music) and, above all, in relation to encounters with difference – heavenly, earthly, social, political, religious, geographical. What possibilities in baroque are open now in relation to present dilemmas in art history and world events? Baroque enables – arguably, it demands – a radical rethinking of historical time – and a rethinking of familiar history. It permits a liberation from periodization and linear time, as well as from historicism. While the scholars below acknowledge that baroque is often equated with style or historical period, it is most productively thought beyond them. Mieke Bal has argued that baroque epistemology permits an “hallucinatory quality” of relation between past and present that also allows a release from a supposed academic objectivity, while insisting that the engagement with the past should remain discomfiting and profoundly disturbing.1 Instead of repressing the past and time, creative retrospection allows its implications to emerge. In its materiality and bodiliness, baroque undermines resolution, gropes towards fragmentation, overgrows, and exceeds. Baroque architecture may be seen as overflowing, an excess of ornamental exteriority and evasive proliferation. This brings to the fore the question of surface. Andrew Benjamin’s approach to surface as neither merely structural nor merely decoration in architecture is important here. Baroque time and form impinge on each other – that is, not simply the time that it takes to process point of view into form, but of form into point of view.2 Thus the pursuit is for a baroque vision of vision, a baroque audition of hearing, and a multitemporality. The seminar “Materiality between Art, Science, and Culture in the Viceroyalties” brought together art historians, conservators, and conservation scientists to analyze the art of the Spanish viceroyalties from the sixteenth through the eighteenth centuries. Over a period of three years, this project organized a series of seminars, involving presentations and site visits in Buenos Aires, Córdoba, and Los Angeles. Specialists from Latin America, Europe, and the United States have adopted a holistic research approach, taking into account all aspects of colonial artworks: material, contextual, and conceptual. The Andean church of Our Lady of Copacabana de Andamarca in Bolivia was built in 1723. Its walls are made of adobe bricks and are decorated with paintings dated from mid 18th century. Before a restoration process involving the governments of Bolivia and the Federal Republic of Germany, seven microsamples were extracted from representative colors of one of the wall paintings inside the church. The aim of our research was to characterize the chromatic palette and investigate the painting technique of this Andean colonial wall painting. To approach these goals, an Integrated investigation comprising Raman and FTIR-ATR spectroscopy, optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy with X-ray microanalysis (SEM-EDS), gas chromatography (GC), and gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was carried out.The results indicated the use of a mixture of two basic copper sulfates of mineral origin, brochantite and antlerite, as the green pigment, adding relevant information to the palette of green pigments in colonial art. Yellow, orange and red ochre, abundant pigments in the Andean region, were also characterized. Observation by optical microscopy of crosssections of the embedded microsamples and analysis of organic binders by GC and GC-MS pointed to a secco technique and the use of a mixture of egg and vegetable oil (?tempera grassa?) as the pigment binder.In conclusion, our results allowed to establish the pigment palette and offered new insights into the painting technique of Andean wall paintings. Lining treatments used in the conservation-restoration field can be classified according to the adhesive used. Traditional methods include those based on glue-starch and wax-resin whilst those using synthetic adhesives are considered alternative methods. Rise of new materials and mechanical equipment like the low-pressure table expanded possibilities of intervention. However, alternative methods require previous exhaustive testing of procedures, tools and supplies. This paper describes research carried out by an interdisciplinary team of conservators, historians and chemists from the IIPC-TAREA that elucidated fundamental aspects of a painting of San Luis Gonzaga from the South American colonial period, deteriorated but with an important documentary value. In the case here presented a minimal intervention restoration criterion was applied and the nap bond method used proved to be the most suitable alternative lining for this particular situation. Direct inlet mass spectrometry (DI-MS) was examined for its suitability to quickly identify indigo in mixtures with lipidic and proteinaceous binders, such as those characteristic of paintings and polychromy. The technique was tested on naturally aged reference mixtures of indigo with linseed oil, rabbit skin glue, and whole egg. DI-MS with electron ionization at 70. eV served as an efficient tool for screening indigo in complex matrices and provided, at the same time, a mass spectral fingerprint of the organic binder in just a few minutes. The technique was applied to the identification of indigo in a blue sample from a mural painting dated from the 18th century and housed in an Andean church in Bolivia. Analytical characterization of reference carbon-based black pigments has been performed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) with attenuated total reflectance (ATR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled to an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS). The unambiguous identification of these pigments, which are found in paintings, rock art and archeological artifacts, still remains a big challenge due to the variety of sources and manufacturing processes used in their preparation. The analytical results achieved in this study allowed us to discriminate between carbon-based pigments from different sources and detect adulterations. The methodological approach was successfully applied to the identification of vegetable charcoal and bone black in two colonial paintings dated from the eighteenth century. Pigment samples obtained from a South American Jesuit wooden sculpture housed at the Museum of Natural Sciences in La Plata, Buenos Aires province, Argentina, were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis and infrared spectroscopy. The red pigments were identified as vermilion and minium, while the mineral pigment green earth was identified for the first time in a Colonial artwork, together with calcite as the plaster. Two fungal species, Nigrospora sphaerica (Sac.) Mason and Chaethomium globosum Kunze, were isolated from a sample of wood, which was identified as Cedrela fissilis. Chaetomium is a known soft-rot fungus with the capacity to decay wood, but little is known about the effects of Nigrospora on wood. The presence of the two fungi in decayed areas of the wood suggests a contribution of both of them to the degradation of the sculpture.

The image of Our Lady of Copacabana, a gilded polychrome sculpture carved in maguey wood in 1583, is one of the most important devotions in the Americas. In former research, we have identified the use of gypsum, Armenian bole, cerussite and atacamite in its polychromy. In this study, a red sample taken from the Virgin's tunic and a blue sample extracted from the cloak have been analysed with the aim to identify both pigments and offer insights into the painting technique. Analysis by micro-Raman spectroscopy complemented with scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy and high-performance liquid chromatography allowed the identification of carmine lake in the red sample. Analysis by micro-Raman spectroscopy of the surface of the blue sample and its cross section showed the presence of smalt-The blue-glass pigment-over a cerussite layer, bathed by a very thin ultramarine layer-from a probable native origin-following a pictorial tradition that would last even until the eighteenth century. This is the first time that lapis lazuli has been scientifically identified in a Spanish American colonial painted layer. A multidisciplinary team of chemists and art historians from the University of Buenos Aires and the National Council of Scientific and Technological Research (CONICET) has examined the green, yellow, and red pigments used in a collection of 29 paintings from the highlands of Peru in the Andean region during the colonial period (1610-1780). The results described in this paper are a continuation of previous research on blue pigments found in the same corpus (JAIC 38 [1999]: 100-23). The results show how the artists from the big workshops of Cusco and the cities of the Alto Peru (the highlands of Bolivia and N.W. Argentina) followed the recipes for color preparation included in the technical treatises written by Spanish painters. This article shows the results reached by an interdisciplinary team of chemists and art historians following studies of the use of blue pigments in a group of 106 paintings done in the Andes region during the colonial period (1610–1780). It describes the methods employed and the results obtained in the analysis of these pigments, along with important observations on the historical dimension of the practices developed by South American artists of that period.

The article, based on the results of non-invasive scientifical analyses, illustrates the changes occurred in the technology of codex painting in early colonial Mesocamerica.

The subject of this thesis is the postmortem photographic portrait in Buenos Aires and, especially, its development in the context of the insertion of the photography in the early twentieth century massmedia. In this sense, the main objective of this work is to contribute to the knowledge of the relationship between death and visual representation in the beginning of the mass culture. The analysis of a heterogeneous corpus - the photographs, paintings, photo-engravings, cartoons, journalistic images and advertisings - therefore tries to study some fundamental problems of the presence of the image and the portrait in modern funerary rites and mourning practices. Its intention is also to highlight the role of mortuary practices in the Argentine modernization process and its links with the development of visual mass culture.; El sujeto de la tesis presente es el retrato fotográfico post-mortem a Buenos Aires y, especialmente, su desarrollo en el marco de la inserción de la fotografía en la prensa de masa de principios del siglo XX. En este sentido, el objetivo principal de este trabajo es contribuir al conocimiento de los relaciones entre muerto y representación visual en el principio de la cultura de masa. El análisis de un corpus heterogéneo - fotografías, pinturas, fotograbados, caricaturas, imágenes tan periodísticas como publicitarias - tratará pues de dar cuenta de algunos problemas fundamentales de la presencia de la imagen y el retrato en los ritos funerarios y las prácticas modernas de duelo. Tenemos también la intención de poner de relieve el papel de las prácticas mortuorias en el proceso argentino de modernización y sus lazos con desarrollo de la cultura visual de masa.; Le sujet de la présente thèse est le portrait photographique post-mortem à Buenos Aires et, spécialement, son développement dans le cadre de l'insertion de la photographie dans la presse de masse du début du XXe siècle. En ce sens, l'objectif principal de ce travail est de contribuer à la connaissance des rapports entre mort et représentation visuelle dans le début de la culture de masse. L'analyse d'un corpus hétérogène - des photographies, des peintures, des photogravures, des caricatures, des images aussi journalistiques que publicitaires - essayera donc de rendre compte de quelques problèmes fondamentaux de la présence de l'image et le portrait dans les rites funéraires et les pratiques de deuil modernes. On a aussi le propos de mettre en relief le rôle des pratiques mortuaires dans le processus argentin de modernisation et ses liens avec le développement de la culture visuelle de masse.
