Context. Over the past 40 years, helioseismology has been enormously successful in the study of the solar interior. A shortcoming has been the lack of a convincing detection of the solar g modes, which are oscillations driven by gravity and are hidden in the deepest part of the solar body – its hydrogen-burning core. The detection of g modes is expected to dramatically improve our ability to model this core, the rotational characteristics of which have, until now, remained unknown. Aims. We present the identification of very low frequency g modes in the asymptotic regime and two important parameters that have long been waited for: the core rotation rate, and the asymptotic equidistant period spacing of these g modes. Methods. The GOLF instrument on board the SOHO space observatory has provided two decades of full-disk helioseismic data. The search for g modes in GOLF measurements has been extremely difficult because of solar and instrumental noise. In the present study, the p modes of the GOLF signal are analyzed differently: we search for possible collective frequency modulations that are produced by periodic changes in the deep solar structure. Such modulations provide access to only very low frequency g modes, thus allowing statistical methods to take advantage of their asymptotic properties. Results. For oscillatory periods in the range between 9 and nearly 48 h, almost 100 g modes of spherical harmonic degree 1 and more than 100 g modes of degree 2 are predicted. They are not observed individually, but when combined, they unambiguously provide their asymptotic period equidistance and rotational splittings, in excellent agreement with the requirements of the asymptotic approximations. When the period equidistance has been measured, all of the individual frequencies of each mode can be determined. Previously, p-mode helioseismology allowed the g-mode period equidistance parameter P0 to be bracketed inside a narrow range, between approximately 34 and 35 min. Here, P0 is measured to be 34 min 01 s, with a 1 s uncertainty. The previously unknown g-mode splittings have now been measured from a non-synodic reference with very high accuracy, and they imply a mean weighted rotation of 1277 ± 10 nHz (9-day period) of their kernels, resulting in a rapid rotation frequency of 1644 ± 23 nHz (period of one week) of the solar core itself, which is a factor 3.8 ± 0.1 faster than the rotation of the radiative envelope. Conclusions. The g modes are known to be the keys to a better understanding of the structure and dynamics of the solar core. Their detection with these precise parameters will certainly stimulate a new era of research in this field.

Abstract Earth’s magnetic field was in a highly unusual state when macroscopic animals of the Ediacara Fauna diversified and thrived. Any connection between these events is tantalizing but unclear. Here, we present single crystal paleointensity data from 2054 and 591 Ma pyroxenites and gabbros that define a dramatic intensity decline, from a strong Proterozoic field like that of today, to an Ediacaran value 30 times weaker. The latter is the weakest time-averaged value known to date and together with other robust paleointensity estimates indicate that Ediacaran ultra-low field strengths lasted for at least 26 million years. This interval of ultra-weak magnetic fields overlaps temporally with atmospheric and oceanic oxygenation inferred from numerous geochemical proxies. This concurrence raises the question of whether enhanced H ion loss in a reduced magnetic field contributed to the oxygenation, ultimately allowing diversification of macroscopic and mobile animals of the Ediacara Fauna.

In Africa, measles epidemics are frequently reported, despite numerous preventive measures, such as vaccination, which targets children under 5 years of age. Unfortunately, the Republic of the Congo is not an exception to this major health concern. Indeed, many cases are reported annually. Here, we provide an overview of the epidemiological characteristics of laboratory-confirmed measles cases from January 2019 to October 2022 as well as the risk factors associated with the occurrence of measles outbreak. Samples from suspected measles cases were collected across the country and sent to the National Laboratory of Public Health for confirmation. ABSTRACTThere have been many concerns raised on the impacts of increasing urbanization on sensitive urban ecosystems such as soils, water bodies and forests. The lack of governmental programs and policies further hinders the protection and conservation of these ecosystems especially in developing countries such as Ghana. This research seeks to understand how rapid urbanization has changed urban forest cover within five metropolitan districts, Accra, Cape Coast, Kumasi, Sekondi-Takoradi and Tamale over the years. In pursuit of this objective, Landsat 7ETM+ and 8OLI images were acquired and analyzed for the years 1990, 2000, 2010 and 2020 using Geographic Information Science (GIS) and Remote Sensing techniques. Results showed substantial loss of urban forests in these districts over the 30 year period and increased in built and cultivated land areas. Data also showed increasing population in these districts over the study period. The study concludes with a recommendation for growth management in the country and the urgent need for policy reforms that integrate urban forests and ecosystems protection into mainstream planning and development in the country.

Abstract Background Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) is one of the world’s classical neglected tropical diseases representing a major public health threat in sub-Saharan Africa. Although the parasitic disease is in decline in the Republic of Congo, the better understanding of the epidemiological situation of active foci is required to reduce the risk of disease resurgence which could impede progress registered so far. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of HAT and the associated risk factors in individuals living in remote areas of the Republic of Congo. Methods A cross-sectional survey was carried out in volunteers living in rural settings from June 2020 to January 2021. Socio-demographic and Clinical parameters of the participants were recorded. The presence of HAT-specific antibodies was assessed in whole blood, and then confirmed in serial diluted plasma samples using Card-Agglutination Trypanosomiasis Test (CATT)/T.b. gambiense CATT. The Capillary Tube Centrifugation (CTC) and Lymph nodes (LN) examination were done for detecting trypanosome parasites in CATT-serum positive cases. The staging of positive participants was determined by cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) examination. Results Out of 8556 enrolled participants, 48.5% were more than 15 years old, 57.7% were unschooled and 67.2% practiced peasant activities. The prevalence of HAT infection was 0.3% with the predominance of patients at stage 1 of the disease (84.0%). The districts of Mindouli (OR: 25.9 (5.2–468); p = 0.0016) and Mpouya (OR: 13.3 (2.5–246); p = 0.0140) was revealed as the foci of high risk of HAT infection. Several factors were associated with an increased risk of HAT infection mainly including the non-schooling (OR: 5.1 (1.2–21.9); p = 0.0268), the life in couple or married (OR: 3.3 (1.0–11.3); p = 0.0545) and the practice of peasant activities (OR: 6.9 (2.4–29.3); p = 0.0017). Conclusion This study highlights the need of revising and strengthening the strategies of HAT control in Republic of Congo, using an approach which will take into account the education level, the marital status and the occupation of the population at risk.

Abstract Background There is paucity of data on the prevalence and distribution of multidrug- Resistant-Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) in the Republic of Congo. Among the challenges resides the implementation of a robust TB resistance diagnostic program using molecular tools. In resource limited settings there is a need to gather data to enable prioritization of actions. The objective of this study was is to implement molecular tools as a best of diagnosing MDR and XDR-TB among presumptive tuberculosis patients referred to reference hospital of Makelekele in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo. Methods We have conducted a cross-sectional study, including a total of 92 presumptive pulmonary tuberculosis patients and who had never received treatment recruited at the reference hospital of Makelekele from October 2018 to October 2019. The socio-demographic and clinical data were collected as well as sputum samples. Rifampicin resistance was investigated using Xpert (Cepheid) and second-line TB drugs Susceptibility testing were performed by the Brucker HAIN Line Probe Assay (GenoType MTBDRsl VER 2.0 assay) method. Results From the 92 recruited patients, 57 (62%) were found positive for the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex. The prevalence of rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis (RR-TB) was 9.8% (9/92) and importantly 2.2% were pre-XDR/XDR. Conclusion This study showed a high rate of rifampicin resistance and the presence of extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis in the study area in new patients. This study highlights the need for further studies of TB drug resistance in the country.

Abstract Background In the Republic of Congo, hot temperature and seasons distortions observed may impact the development of malaria parasites. We investigate the variation of malaria cases, parasite density and the multiplicity of Plasmodium falciparum infection throughout the year in Brazzaville. Methods From May 2015 to May 2016, suspected patients with uncomplicated malaria were enrolled at the Hôpital de Mfilou, CSI « Maman Mboualé», and the Laboratoire National de Santé Publique. For each patient, thick blood was examined and parasite density was calculated. After DNA isolation, MSP1 and MSP2 genes were genotyped. Results A total of 416, 259 and 131 patients with suspected malaria were enrolled at the CSI «Maman Mboualé», Hôpital de Mfilou and the Laboratoire National de Santé Publique respectively. Several studies have been conducted on shaded cocoa systems, but few of these have examined species-specific crown architecture of upper canopy trees and its influence on shade provision in cocoa agroforestry systems. In view of the fact that cocoa agroforestry is a recommended practice to drive cocoa production onto a climate-smart pathway, and given the role of upper canopy trees in the moderation of shade and light to the cocoa system, there is the need to understand the dynamics of upper canopy crown as well as dendrometric parameters and how these parameters influence shade provision for the cocoa system. Employing a replicated transect method, quantitative data on upper canopy trees in cocoa agroforestry systems were collected from twelve (12) 1 ha plots established on a 5 km long transect at the Bonsu Nkwanta cocoa growing district in the Western Region of Ghana. Given that there was no existing information on various crown forms of upper canopy trees in cocoa systems in Ghana, the crown forms generated by (Frank, 2010) were adopted for this study. These were “spreading to cylindrical”, “elongate to rounded to oval”, “upswept and vase shaped”, “conical to pyramidal” and “spade shaped” crown forms. One hundred and sixty (160) upper canopy trees comprising of 44 species, which were distributed in 21 families were recorded in the cocoa agroforestry systems surveyed in the study area. Newbouldia laevis was observed to be the most abundant species recorded in the sampled farms. The results showed that crown and dendrometric characteristics of the upper canopy trees did not differ in cocoa agroforestry systems of different ages. Also, the highest values of crown volume, crown area and shade area were recorded by the “spreading to cylindrical” crown forms followed by the “elongate” crown form, respectively. Furthermore, the study showed that crown area, crown volume, crown diameter, tree DBH and crown height were the parameters that strongly affected the ability of a particular crown form of a tree to provide higher shade. Based on the results, we conclude that in selecting upper canopy trees for the provision of shade in cocoa agroforestry systems, trees with “spreading to cylindrical” and “elongate” crown forms are the most suitable crown forms to incorporate in cocoa agroforestry systems. However, these constituted the least crown forms in the cocoa systems studied. The study provides a useful guide to the selection and management of upper canopy tree species for the provision of shade in cocoa agroforestry systems, and holds further applications for the provision of decision support for the promotion of climate – smart cocoa agroforestry in Ghana and the West African cocoa belt.

Petroleum is, up to this date, an inimitable nonrenewable energy resource. Petroleum leakage, which arises during transport, storage, and refining, is the most important contaminant in the environment, as it produces harm to the surrounding ecosystem. Bioremediation is an efficient method used to treat petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated soil using indigenous microorganisms. The degradation characteristics for a variety of hydrocarbons (hexane, benzene, gasoline, and diesel) were qualitatively and quantitatively investigated using Bacillus isolates. Microbiological and biochemical methods have been used including isolation of oil-degrading bacteria, enzymatic activities, the determination of physicochemical parameters, biosurfactant production and extraction assay, oil displacement assay, antimicrobial assay of the biosurfactants, and bioremediation kinetics. Consequently, of the 60 isolates capable of degrading different hydrocarbons at fast rates, 34 were suspected to be Bacillus isolates capable of growing in 24 h or 48 h on BH medium supplemented with 2% of hexane, benzene, gasoline, diesel, and olive oil, respectively. Among the 34 isolates, 61% (21/34) are capable of producing biosurfactant-like molecules by using gasoline, 70% (24/34) with diesel oil, 85% (29/34) with hexane, and 82% (28/34) with benzene. It was found that biosurfactant-producing isolates are extractable with HCl (100%), ammonium sulphate (95%), chloroform (95%), and ethanol (100%). Biosurfactants showed stability at 20°C, 37°C, 40°C, and 60°C. Biosurfactant secreted by Bacillus strains has shown an antagonistic effect in Escherichia coli, Shigella flexneri 5a M90T, and Bacillus cereus. The selected isolates could therefore be safely used for biodegradation. Substrate biodegradation patterns by individual isolates were found to significantly differ. The study shows that benzene was degraded faster, followed by hexane, gasoline, and finally diesel. The Bacillus consortium used can decrease hydrocarbon content from 195 to 112 (g/kg) in 15 days.

Abstract Background In the Republic of Congo, artemisinin-based combinations have been recommended for the treatment of uncomplicated malaria since 2006. However, the emergence of resistant parasites again these combinations in Southeast Asia is a threat for the control of this disease, especially in sub-Saharan Africa where the weight of the disease is important. Indeed, polymorphisms in Plasmodium falciparum K13-propeller gene have been involved in variations of drug sensitivity of Plasmodium falciparum to artemisinin-based combinations. The aim of the current study is to determine the prevalence of mutations of this gene in isolates collected in three health centers in Brazzaville. Methods From May 2015 to May 2016, a total of 131, 259 and 416 samples from patients with suspected malaria were collected at the Laboratoire National de Santé Publique, Hôpital de Mfilou, and the CSI «Maman Mboualé» respectively. After DNA isolation, genotyping and sequencing of Plasmodium falciparum K13-propeller were performed in positive Plasmodium falciparum isolates identified after msp-2 gene genotyping. Results All 806 samples collected were msp-2 genotyped and Plasmodium falciparum infections were confirmed in 287 samples with 43, 85, 159 samples from Laboratoire National de Santé Publique, Hôpital de Mfilou, and the CSI «Maman Mboualé» respectively. Of these 287 msp-2 positives samples, K13-propeller nested PCR products were successfully obtained from 145 (50.52%) isolates and sequences were generated from 127(87.58%) nested products. None of mutations that were associated with ACTs resistance in Southeast Asia were detected on the samples from three different study sites from Brazzaville. However, one mutation type was observed at position 578, where alanine was substituted by serine (A578S) in two isolates (1.57%, 2/127), those from the Hôpital de Mfilou. No mutation was found in isolates from the two other sites. Conclusion The current study shows a very limited polymorphism in the K13-propeller gene in isolates from the Republic of Congo and K13 polymorphisms associate with ACT resistance are not present in this country. However, permanent and large surveillance of resistant parasite population using K13-propeller gene is recommended.

Abstract Background In this work, we investigated the genetic diversity of HIV-1 and the presence of mutations conferring antiretroviral drug resistance in 50 drug-naïve infected persons in the Republic of Congo (RoC). Samples were obtained before large-scale access to HAART in 2002 and 2004. Methods To assess the HIV-1 genetic recombination, the sequencing of the pol gene encoding a protease and partial reverse transcriptase was performed and analyzed with updated references, including newly characterized CRFs. The assessment of drug resistance was conducted according to the WHO protocol. Results Among the 50 samples analyzed for the pol gene, 50% were classified as intersubtype recombinants, charring complex structures inside the pol fragment. Five samples could not be classified (noted U). The most prevalent subtypes were G with 10 isolates and D with 11 isolates. One isolate of A, J, H, CRF05, CRF18 and CRF37 were also found. Two samples (4%) harboring the mutations M230L and Y181C associated with the TAMs M41L and T215Y, respectively, were found. Conclusion This first study in the RoC, based on WHO classification, shows that the threshold of transmitted drug resistance before large-scale access to antiretroviral therapy is 4%.

Two Bacillus strains isolated from Ntoba mbodi : Bacillus megaterium (B.me NM 02) Bacillus licheniformis (B.li NM01), has shown a significant caseinolytic enzyme activity. We set optimization of growth and enzyme production conditions. Several parameters have been optimized: temperature, pH, various types of media, carbon and nitrogen sources. In both strains, growth is possible from 25 to 60 ° C with an optimum temperature at 37°C for B.li and at 35°C for B.me. Enzyme production was observed from 25 to 55 °C with an optimum temperature of 30 °C for B.li. Enzyme production was observed from 25 to 50 ° C with an optimum temperature of 35 ° C in B.me. For pH, growth and enzyme production can be at 5, 7 and 9 with an optimum at 7 for both strains. The LB medium is better for growth and enzyme production than TSB for B.li and B.me. Among the carbon sources used, fructose is better for growth after 48 hours of incubation in both strains (B.li: 0,93±0,001, B.me: 0,928±0,002), but for enzyme production fructose remains the best carbon source for B.li (14,33±1,24) , while starch is the best for B.me (14.66±1,24). Concerning nitrogen sources, in both strains the best source of growth is the yeast extracts (B.li: 0,969±0,015, B.me: 0,952±0,01). For enzyme production, the two sources can be used for B.li.(14,333±1,247) but for B .me (14,333±0,471) only the yeast extracts is the best as well as for growth and enzyme production. Furthermore, in both strains the produced enzyme was partially purified by using ammonium sulfate precipitation, and SDS-PAGE has been hold, profiles of specific bands are useful to give more information and differentiate the two strains.

Fibrinolytic enzyme gene (fibE) is widely conserved among Bacillus spp. belonging to group I species. This is encoding a serine-like enzyme (FibE) secreted in extracellular medium. This present work aims to assess the molecular usefulness of this novel conserved housekeeping gene among group I Bacillus spp. to identify and discriminate some related strains in traditional fermented food and beverages in Republic of Congo. First of all 155 isolates have been screened for enzymatic activities using caseinolytic assays. PCR techniques and nested PCR method using specific primers and correlated with 16S RNA sequencing were used. Blotting techniques have been performed for deep comparison with molecular methods. As a result B. amyloliquefaciens (1), B. licheniformis (1), B. subtilis (1), B. pumilus (3), B. altitudinis (2), B. atrophaeus (1), and B. safensis (3) have been specifically identified among 155 isolates found in fermented food and beverages. Genetic analysis and overexpression of glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) fused to mature protein of FibE in Escherichia coli BL21 and TOP10 showed 2-fold higher enzymatic activities by comparison with FibE wild type one. Immunodetection should be associated but this does not clearly discriminate Bacillus belonging to group I.

Background Smoking is a public health problem in Mexico and worldwide; its economic impact on developing countries has not been well documented. The aim of this study was to assess the direct medical costs attributable to smoking incurred by lung cancer patients treated at the National Cancer Institute of Mexico (INCan). Methods The study was conducted at INCan in 2009. We carried out a cost of illness (COI) methodology, using data derived from an expert panel consensus and from medical chart review. A panel of experts developed a diagnostic-therapeutic guide that combined the hospital patient pathways and the infrastructure, human resources, technology, and services provided by the medical units at INCan. Cost estimates in Mexican pesos were adjusted by inflation and converted into US Dollars using the 2013 FIX exchange rate for foreign transactions (1 USD = 13.06 Mexican pesos). Results A 297 incident cases diagnosed with any type of lung cancer were analyzed. According to clinical stage, the costs per patient were 13,456; 35,648; 106,186; and 144,555 USD, for lung cancer stages I, II, III, and IV respectively. The weighted average annual cost/patient was and 139,801 USD and the average annual cost/patient that was attributable to smoking was 92,269 USD. This cost was independent of the clinical stage, with stage IV representing 96% of the annual cost. The total annual cost of smoking-related lung cancer at INCan was 19,969,781 USD. Conclusions The medical care costs of lung cancer attributable to smoking represent a high cost both for INCan and the Mexican health sector. These costs could be reduced if all provisions established in the Framework Convention of Tobacco Control of the World Health Organization were implemented in Mexico.

We describe a case of aplastic crisis caused by parvovirus B19 in an adult sickle-cell patient presenting with paleness, tiredness, fainting and dyspnea. The absence of reticulocytes lead to the diagnosis. Anti-B19 IgM and IgG were detected. Reticulocytopenia in patients with hereditary hemolytic anemia suggests B19 infection.

We investigated the effect of clonidine in 19 patients having lumbar disc surgery under nitrous oxide/isoflurane/relaxant anaesthesia. The EEG, spinal and cortical somatosensory evoked potentials, and the brainstem auditory evoked potentials were recorded. After equilibration of the general anaesthetic, two successive infusions of clonidine (5 micrograms.kg-1) were given. After the second infusion of clonidine, the plasma concentration increased from 0.2(SEM 0.05) to 6.4(SEM 0.06) ng.ml-1 (p < 0.05). In the EEG, delta-activity was maintained, but the beta-fraction, and the 95% and 50% spectral frequencies were reduced. Total EEG power progressively decreased from 296(152-397) microV2 to 108(51-240) microV2. The somatosensory evoked spinal potential (N13) decreased in amplitude, (1.77(SEM 0.35) microV to 1.59(SEM 0.35) microV, p < 0.05) and increased in latency (14.37(SEM 0.29) ms to 14.69(SEM 0.31) ms, p < 0.05). The central conduction time increased from 6.47(SEM 0.16) ms to 6.92(SEM 0.25) ms, ns. There was no effect on the cortical somatosensory potentials, or the brainstem auditory evoked potentials. According to the EEG spectral indices, anaesthesia appeared to deepen despite a reduction in the end expiratory isoflurane concentration from 0.53(SEM 0.07) to 0.28(SEM 0.06) vol%, which indicated a reduction in anaesthetic requirements following clonidine.

Collective emotions of rage and grief dominate Israeli political discourses regarding the Middle East conflict. The weekly peace vigils of the Women in Black who protest the state's occupation of the West Bank and Gaza and the opposition which the vigils encounter, publicly display politicized collective emotions. In these weekly confrontations, grief and rage articulate intense contestations regarding the politics of peace as well as the politics of gender in Israel. Rage and grief unravel two drastically different visions of transcending national vulnerabilities and two disparate constructions of gender identity.
