Abstract

In this work we present the dielectric behavior of water with a novel flexible model that improved all three sites water models Different concentrations of the ionic liquid 1- butyl-3-methylimidazolium [bmim] bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide [Tf 2 N] with water was investigated. The study was performed by molecular dynamics simulations using three water models, being two non-polarizable 3-site SPC/E and SPC/e, and a novel flexible 3-site FAB/epsilon model. Systematic thermodynamics, dynamical and dielectric properties were investigated, such as density, diffusion coefficient, heat of vaporization Delta-Hvap, and surface tension at 300 K and 1 bar. We extrapolated the experimental molar fraction of the mixtures and a pattern change for all properties was observed, evidencing the phase separation previously reported by experimental data. Abstract

The handling and manipulation of carbon nanotubes continues to be a challenge to those interested in the application potential of these promising materials. To this end, we have developed a method to deposit pure nanotube films over large flat areas on substrates of arbitrary composition. The method bears some resemblance to the Langmuir-Blodgett deposition method used to lay down thin organic layers. We show that this redeposition technique causes no major changes in the films' microstructure and that they retain the electronic properties of as-deposited film laid down on an alumina membrane., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures, submitted Journal of Applied Physics

Different concentrations of the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium [bmim] and bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide [ $$\hbox {Tf}_2$$ N] with water have been investigated. The study was performed by molecular dynamics simulations using three water models, being two non-polarizable 3-site SPC/E and SPC/e and a flexible 3-site FAB/ $$\epsilon $$ model. Systematic thermodynamics and dynamical and dielectric properties were investigated, such as density, self-diffusion coefficient, heat of vaporization $$\Delta H_\mathrm{vap}$$ , and surface tension at 300 K and 1 bar. Extrapolating the experimental molar fraction of the mixtures, a pattern change for all properties was observed, evidencing the phase separation previously reported by experimental data. The results also show the dielectric effect in the system, which is important in ionic systems and fundamental for understanding why this ionic liquid behaves hydrophobic.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate internal consistency and temporal stability trough test re-test reliability of the Portuguese version of the Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory (SPAI) in a heterogeneous Brazilian sample. METHODS: After informed consent, the translated and adapted version of the SPAI Portuguese was tested and re-tested at a 14-day interval in a sample of 225 university students, both genders, from 4 different undergraduate courses. After double data entry, statistical analysis included Cronbach's alphas, Pearson and intra-class correlation coefficients. RESULTS: The studied sample consisted of 213 students from 4 sub-samples: 95 law students, 31 social communication students, 54 civil engineering students and 33 dental medicine students. The mean age was 23 (±6) years and 110 (51.6%) were female. The Cronbach' alpha was 0.96, no difference for both genders. The differential (total) score of the SPAI Portuguese showed Pearson coefficient 0.83 (95% CI 0.78-0.87) and Intra-class coefficient 0.83 (95% CI 0.78-0.86). There was no statistical difference in Pearson coefficients between genders (p = 0.121) and the 4 sub-samples (p = 0.258). CONCLUSION: The results do not ensure validity, however, the SPAI Portuguese version presented a good content homogeneity with satisfactory level of internal consistency. The temporal stability evaluated was substantial. The results showed that the Portuguese SPAI presents perfectly acceptable reliability for both genders and suggest that it can be used in Brazilian populationsOBJETIVO: Avaliar consistência interna e estabilidade temporal, através de fidedignidade teste-reteste, da versão em português do Inventário de Ansiedade e Fobia Social (SPAI), em uma amostra brasileira heterogênea. MÉTODOS: Após consentimento informado, a versão traduzida e adaptada para o português do SPAI foi testada e re-testada, com 14 dias de intervalo, em uma amostra de 225 estudantes universitários de ambos os gêneros, de quatro cursos de graduação. Após dupla entrada de dados, a análise estatística incluiu Alfa de Cronbach e os coeficientes de correlação de Pearson e Intra-classe. RESULTADOS: A amostra estudada consistiu de 213 estudantes de quatro sub-amostras: 95 estudantes de Direito, 31 de Comunicação Social, 54 de Engenharia Civil e 33 de Odontologia. A média de idade foi de 23 anos (± 6) e 110 (51,6%) eram do gênero feminino. O Alpha de Cronbach foi de 0,96, sem diferenças entre os gêneros. O escore diferencial (total) do SPAI português apresentou coeficiente de Pearson de 0,83 (IC95% 0,78-0,87) e coeficiente Intra-classe de 0,83 (IC95% 0,78-0,86). Não houve diferença estatística nos coeficientes de Pearson entre os gêneros (p = 0,121) ou entre as quatro sub-amostras (p = 0,258). CONCLUSÃO: Os resultados não asseguram validade; a versão do SPAI português apresentou boa homogeneidade de conteúdo com nível satisfatório consistência interna. A estabilidade temporal avaliada foi consistente. Os dados demonstram que o SPAI português apresenta fidedignidade perfeitamente aceitável para ambos os gêneros e sugerem sua utilização na população brasileira.

Abstract

O Transtorno Bipolar (THB) não é somente uma condição endógena. Severos eventos negativos durante a vida influenciam o desenvolvimento do primeiro episódio e alteram o curso do THB durante a vida. O Transtorno de Estresse Pós-Traumático (TEPT) é uma severa e incapacitante doença mental que afeta uma significativa parcela da população, em algum momento de suas vidas. A presença concomitante de TEPT e THB parece mais freqüente que anteriormente sugerido, e pacientes psicóticos com história de trauma tem sintomas mais severos e maior tendência a abusar de substância psicoativas ilícitas. Pensamentos intrusivos e pesadelos ocorrem com freqüência nos pacientes com TEPT e têm sido associados aos transtornos de humor. O tratamento farmacológico dessa comorbidade ainda está relacionado a estudo empíricos ou não-controlados. Neste artigo, são revisados aspectos atuais relacionados a essa comorbidade e enfatizados aspectos referentes à epidemiologia, etiologia, curso e tratamento farmacológico da comorbidade entre TEPT e THB. Especialmente, este estudo enfatiza a importância de avaliar sistematicamente a história de trauma em pacientes com THB.

20. Considerações filosóficas sobre a validade do escopo do Reducionismo Adaptacionista do Darwinismo Literário em sua versão mais forte

Abstract

Propomos, neste artigo, proceder a algumas considerações filosóficas sobre a legitimidade da proposta e dos objetivos do reducionismo adaptacionista do "darwinismo literário" em sua versão mais forte. Centramo-nos nos textos de Joseph Carroll, porquanto representam a máxima radicalidade no projeto do estudos darwinistas literários e do reducionismo adaptacionista. Carroll é, segundo acreditamos, quem leva mais longe a pretensão de redução darwinista. Ao confrontarmos Carroll, aproximamo-nos de uma perspectiva de literatura que definitivamente justifica a aproximação que nós buscamos com o darwinismo literário: nossa defesa de uma perspectiva corporificada para mente e cognição, e a compreensão da crítica darwinista literária de que a literatura é um caso especial (e ilustrativo) de atividade cognitiva destinada a orientar o organismo no ambiente físico, mesmo que isso se dê pela via indireta da simulação mental. Mais do que isso, a literatura se distingue de outras formas de conhecimento do mundo, do homem e de seu ambiente exatamente no sentido que nos interessa: distingue-se quanto ao seu assunto e distingue-se quanto ao seu método. A intenção do texto é demonstrar alguns dos caminhos que autores pautados por esse grau de radicalidade no que concerne o projeto de naturalização da literatura devam tomar para que suas teorias possam ser mais justas e condizentes com o objeto literário em si mesmo e, assim, mais eficientes.

Abstract

The study aimed to identify thresholds for hospital bed utilisation which are independently associated with significantly higher risks forA retrospective analysis was carried out on reported data from the English National Health Service (NHS) for the financial year 2013/2014. Reported rates of CDI were used as a proxy for hospital infection rates in acute NHS hospital trusts. Multivariate linear regression was used to assess the relationship between bed utilisation values and CDI controlling for confounding factors. Hospitals were finally plotted in a Pabon Lasso graph according to their average bed occupancy rate (BOR) and bed turnover rate (BTR) per year to visualise the relationship between bed utilisation and CDI.Among English hospital NHS trusts, increasing BTR and decreasing BOR were associated with a decrease in CDI. However, this effect was not large, and patient mix had a larger impact on CDI rates than bed utilisation.While policymakers and managers wishing to target healthcare providers with high CDI rates should look at bed utilisation measures, focusing on these alone is unlikely to have the desired impact. Instead, strategies to combat CDI must take a wider perspective on contributory factors at the institutional level.

Abstract

International audience; Liquid-liquid extraction, i.e. control of the reversible transfer of cations between phases, is a core chemical process for metal purification and recycling. The objective of the “REE-CYCLE” project (Rare Earth Element reCYCling with Low harmful Emissions) is to develop the fundamental understanding of complex fluid processing in order to innovate environmentally friendly, economically competitive processes. The presented work on micro-solvent-extraction takes this approach beyond the state-of-the-art: An instrumented and computer-controlled microfluidic device is described, enabling the first steps towards fast measurement of the free energy of ion transfer between complex fluids. Continuous screening of a manifold parameter set, including e.g. multi-component phase composition, pH, temperature, will be enabled by integra-ting inline, real-time measurements into a robotized lab-on-a-chip. Miniaturized spectro-scopic and sensing methods will allow automated characterization of kinetics/thermody-namics, partition coefficients, chemical potential differences and constituent’s activity coefficients. First results of the microfluidic device, compared to batch mode assays, are presented concerning temperature and pH variation. Examples are shown on N,N,N′,N′-tetraoctyl-3-oxapentane-1,5-diamide (TODGA) reverse micelles diluted in dodecane for lanthanide extraction in the presence of iron. Partition coefficients and kinetics data for different parameters are addressed and resulting pathways explored to enhance separation and selectivity. First data on solvent activity coefficient measurements will also be presented, giving insight on molecule aggregation, constituents’ chemical potentials and solvent vapour pressure.

Abstract

International audience; 1 Scientific and technological background: Solvent extraction of metal ions and circular economy If Richard Feynman is often cited as a pioneer in Nanosciences, one should also cite Glenn Seaborg, 1951's Nobel prize in chemistry who stated in 1980 in a visionary conference that: « In the future, chemistry will be called upon to extend our natural resources of copper, lead, zinc, and other non-ferrous metals by making it possible to recover these metals more economically from low-grade ores or to recycle materials now discarded as waste » [1]. And indeed, rare earth elements as trivalent cations are absolutely irreplaceable for strong magnets, " energy-saving " light bulbs and high capacity batteries, amongst other applications. They are in fact not rare, just highly diluted in the earth crust. They are also chemically very similar. For these two reasons, their extraction and separation is a lengthy and very polluting process. Consequently, cost and environmental constraints led to the closure of most mining facilities in western countries over the past few decades, leading to today's quasi-monopoly of China which controls approximately 97% of the world's rare earth element market as per 2012 figures [2]. The same year, the first industrial recycling of rare earth elements by solvent extraction was started in Saint-Fons and La Rochelle, France, showing that supply autonomy, economical and ecological considerations are of importance in today's society. Following 2011 figures [3], Japan detains 300 kT of WEEE, corresponding to nearly three times the annual global production of rare earths. In order to recycle these ressources, solvent extraction processes need to be rendered ecologically friendly, and be rapidly adapted to each kind of urban mining material. Solvent extraction, i.e. control of the reversible transfer of cations between feed and extraction phases, is a core chemical process for metal purification and recycling in hydrometallurgy. These processes are very complex chemical two-phase systems, where slight changes in parameters may imply huge effects on the phase behavior of the involved complex fluids. This may lead to so-called " third-phase accidents " , representing huge financial losses for a production plant. The overall behavior of these complex fluids is analyzed in multi-dimensional phase diagrams, requiring several years of thorough analysis by techniques ranging from simple pH measurements to scattering techniques implying consequent instrumental and time efforts. Thus, solvent extraction process tweaking is frequently based on empirical data. The objective of the " REE-CYCLE " project (Rare Earth Element reCYCling with Low harmful Emissions) [4] is to develop the fundamental understanding involved in the process' complex fluids (both experimental and theoretical) in order to enable a quantum leap in process analysis and thereby rapidly innovating environmentally friendly and economically competitive processes. 2 Instrumented microfluidic device for complex fluid phase diagram exploration If extraction microfluidic devices have already been reported [5], the presented work takes this approach beyond the state of the art. Indeed, we will describe the instrumented and computer-controlled microfluidic device enabling the first steps towards simultaneous fast measurement of the free energy of mass transfer per ion pair between complex fluids. In the longer run, high-througput screening in this lab-on-a-chip tool, and complete automation and robotization of the experimental setup, will enable: 1) Rapid evaluation for innovative " green " processes issued of synthetic chemistry, 2) Benchmarking for numerical approaches and predictive theories, e.g. ienaics [6], 3) Process intensification and ecologilization regarding principles of green chemistry and circular economy. Screening of a manifold parameter set, including e.g. multi-component phase composition, pH, temperature, etc., will be enabled by integrating inline and real-time measurements into a fully robotized system. Ultimately, the Les Rencontres Scientifiques d'IFP Energies nouvelles Microfluidics: from laboratory tools to process development Rueil-Malmaison, France, 4-5 November 2015 device will be designed to deliver continuous, in-line and real-time exploration of phase diagrams by combining several miniaturized spectroscopy and sensing methods for characterization of kinetic & thermodynamic time scales, partition coefficents of extraction, chemical potential differences and constituent activities, without user intervention. Here, we show first results of the microfluidic device (cf. Figure 1) and compare these with batch mode assays concerning temperature and pH variation. Examples will be shown on TODGA reverse micelles diluted in dodec-ane as model system, and extraction of five rare earth elements: La, Nd, Eu, Dy and Yb; in the presence of iron. Partition coefficients and kinetics data for different parameters will be addressed as well as pathways explored to enhance separation and selectivity. First data on solvent activity coefficient measurements will also be presented, giving insight on molecule aggregation, solvent chemical potentials and constituents' vapor pressures. Fig. 1. Conclusions The microfluidic device stands as a first pillar of the REE-CYCLE project, enabling benchmarking for meso-scale modelling and numerical analysis, testing of newly synthesized extraction agents, and paving the way to assisted pertraction devices. On the longer time range, a semi-industrial prototype device for solvent extraction will be conceived gathering the results of all working groups. Furthermore, the microchemistry and-analysis activity is meant to be developed and extended beyond solvent extraction, involving research as well as industrial partners.

Abstract

O Transtorno Bipolar (THB) não é somente uma condição endógena. Severos eventos negativos durante a vida influenciam o desenvolvimento do primeiro episódio e alteram o curso do THB durante a vida. O Transtorno de Estresse Pós-Traumático (TEPT) é uma severa e incapacitante doença mental que afeta uma significativa parcela da população, em algum momento de suas vidas. A presença concomitante de TEPT e THB parece mais freqüente que anteriormente sugerido, e pacientes psicóticos com história de trauma tem sintomas mais severos e maior tendência a abusar de substância psicoativas ilícitas. Pensamentos intrusivos e pesadelos ocorrem com freqüência nos pacientes com TEPT e têm sido associados aos transtornos de humor. O tratamento farmacológico dessa comorbidade ainda está relacionado a estudo empíricos ou não-controlados. Neste artigo, são revisados aspectos atuais relacionados a essa comorbidade e enfatizados aspectos referentes à epidemiologia, etiologia, curso e tratamento farmacológico da comorbidade entre TEPT e THB. Especialmente, este estudo enfatiza a importância de avaliar sistematicamente a história de trauma em pacientes com THB.Bipolar disorder (BD) is not only an endogenous condition. Severe negative life events have been shown to influence the development of the first episode and lifetime course of BD. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a severe and incapacitating mental condition that affect a significant proportion of the general population at some time in their lives. The concomitant presence of BD and PTSD has been shown to be more frequent than previously suggested and psychotic patients with trauma histories have a tendency to present more severe symptoms and are more proned to present substance use disorders. Trauma-related intrusive memories and nightmares of PTSD have been associated with mood changes. Also, kindling and behavioral sensitization have been proposed to explain the etiology and course of both disorders. Pharmacological approaches for this comorbidity are still based on empirical or not controlled approaches. In this article, we critically review the current literature regarding this co morbid condition, and highlight some aspects related to epidemiology, etiology, course and pharmacological treatment of both disorders. Overall, our review emphasizes the importance of systematically evaluate trauma histories in patients with BD.
