To quantify selection acting on a trait, methods have been developed using either within or between-species variation. However, methods using within-species variation do not integrate the changes at the macro-evolutionary scale. Conversely, current methods using between-species variation usually discard within-species variation, thus not accounting for processes at the micro-evolutionary scale. The main goal of this study is to define a neutrality index for a quantitative trait, by combining within- and between-species variation. This neutrality index integrates nucleotide polymorphism and divergence for normalizing trait variation. As such, it does not require estimation of population size nor of time of speciation for normalization. Our index can be used to seek deviation from the null model of neutral evolution, and test for diversifying selection. Applied to brain mass and body mass at the mammalian scale, we show that brain mass is under diversifying selection. Finally, we show that our test is not sensitive to the assumption that population sizes, mutation rates and generation time are constant across the phylogeny, and automatically adjust for it. Popular comparative phylogenetic models such as Brownian Motion, Ornstein-Ulhenbeck, and their extensions, assume that, at speciation, a trait value is inherited identically by two descendant species. This assumption contrasts with models of speciation at a micro-evolutionary scale where descendants' phenotypic distributions are sub-samples of the ancestral distribution. Different speciation mechanisms can lead to a displacement of the ancestral phenotypic mean among descendants and an asymmetric inheritance of the ancestral phenotypic variance. In contrast, even macro-evolutionary models that account for intraspecific variance assume symmetrically conserved inheritance of ancestral phenotypic distribution at speciation. Here we develop an Asymmetric Brownian Motion model (ABM) that relaxes the assumption of symmetric and conserved inheritance of the ancestral distribution at the time of speciation. The ABM jointly models the evolution of both intra- and inter-specific phenotypic variation. It also infers the mode of phenotypic inheritance at speciation, which can range from a symmetric and conserved inheritance, where descendants inherit the ancestral distribution, to an asymmetric and displaced inheritance, where descendants inherit divergent phenotypic means and variances. To demonstrate this model, we analyze the evolution of beak morphology in Darwin finches, finding evidence of displacement at speciation. The ABM model helps to bridge micro- and macro-evolutionary models of trait evolution by providing a more robust framework for testing the effects of ecological speciation, character displacement, and niche partitioning on trait evolution at the macro-evolutionary scale., (© The Author(s) 2024. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare 24-hour intraocular pressure (IOP) related fluctuations monitoring between 2 groups of visual field progression rates in patients with open angle glaucoma (OAG)., Methods: Cross-sectional study performed at Bordeaux University Hospital. Twenty-four-hour monitoring was performed using a contact lens sensor (CLS; Triggerfish; SENSIMED, Etagnières, Switzerland). Progression rate was calculated using a linear regression of the mean deviation (MD) parameter of the visual field test (Octopus; HAAG-STREIT, Switzerland). Patients were allocated into two groups: group 1 with an MD progression rate <-0.5 dB/year and group 2 with an MD progression rate ≥-0.5 dB/year. An automatic signal-processing program was developed and a frequency filtering of the monitoring by wavelet transform analysis was used to compare the output signal between the two groups. A multivariate classifier was performed for prediction of the faster progression group., Results: Fifty-four eyes of 54 patients were included. The mean progression rate was -1.09 ± 0.60 dB/year in group 1 (n = 22) and -0.12 ± 0.13 dB/year in group 2 (n = 32). Twenty-four-hour magnitude and absolute area under the monitoring curve were significantly higher in group 1 than in group 2 (group 1: 343.1 ± 62.3 millivolts [mVs] and 8.28 ± 2.10 mVs, respectively, group 2: 274.0 ± 75.0 mV and 6.82 ± 2.70 mVs respectively, P < 0.05). Magnitude and area under the wavelet curve for short frequency periods ranging from 60 to 220 minutes were also significantly higher in group 1 (P < 0.05)., Conclusions: The 24-hour IOP related fluctuations characteristics, as assessed by a CLS, may act as a risk factor for progression in OAG. In association with other predictive factors of glaucoma progression, the CLS may help adjust treatment strategy earlier.

Purpose: To report a case of lifelong progressive retinal atrophic lesions in a patient with partial acquired lipodystrophy, that is, Barraquer-Simons syndrome., Methods: Case report., Results: A 67-year-old female patient with Barraquer-Simons syndrome was referred for progressive visual loss. Barraquer-Simons syndrome is a rare acquired partial lipodystrophy characterized by a loss of subcutaneous fat in the upper half of the body. Fundus examination disclosed posterior atrophic lesions, particularly evident on autofluorescence images, and their progression as compared to a previous examination performed nine years earlier. Multimodal imaging confirmed the posterior atrophic lesions without any associated exudative signs and highlighted the extension of atrophic areas in the periphery., Conclusion: We here report for the first time a documented progressive retinal atrophy associated with Barraquer-Simons syndrome. Drusen and neovascular complications have already been described in previous reports, but no long-term follow-up was available until the present case to observe such dramatic evolution of the retinal lesions.

Past environmental changes are expected to have profoundly impacted diversity dynamics through time. While some previous studies showed an association between past climate changes or tectonic events and important shifts in lineage diversification, it is only recently that past environmental changes have been explicitly integrated in diversification models to test their influence on diversification rates. Here, we used a global reconstruction of tropical reef habitat dynamics during the Cenozoic and phylogenetic diversification models to test the influence of (i) major geological events, (ii) reef habitat fragmentation and (iii) reef area on the diversification of 9 major clades of tropical reef fish (Acanthuridae, Balistoidea, Carangoidea, Chaetodontidae, Haemulinae, Holocentridae, Labridae, Pomacentridae and Sparidae). The diversification models revealed a weak association between paleo-habitat changes and diversification dynamics. Specifically, the fragmentation of tropical reef habitats over the Cenozoic was found to be a driver of tropical reef fish diversification for 2 clades. However, overall, our approach did not allow the identification of striking associations between diversification dynamics and paleo-habitat fragmentation in contrast with theoretical model's predictions., (© 2021. Generating genomic data for 19 tropical reef fish species of the Western Indian Ocean, we investigate how species ecology influences genetic diversity patterns from local to regional scales. We distinguish between the α , β and γ components of genetic diversity, which we subsequently link to six ecological traits. We find that the α and γ components of genetic diversity are strongly correlated so that species with a high total regional genetic diversity display systematically high local diversity. The α and γ diversity components are negatively associated with species abundance recorded using underwater visual surveys and positively associated with body size. Pelagic larval duration is found to be negatively related to genetic β diversity supporting its role as a dispersal trait in marine fishes. Deviation from the neutral theory of molecular evolution motivates further effort to understand the processes shaping genetic diversity and ultimately the diversification of the exceptional diversity of tropical reef fishes.

We develop a spatially explicit model of diversification based on palaeohabitat to explore the predictions of four major hypotheses potentially explaining the latitudinal diversity gradient (LDG), namely, the 'time-area', 'tropical niche conservatism', 'ecological limits' and 'evolutionary speed' hypotheses. We compare simulation outputs to observed diversity gradients in the global reef fish fauna. Our simulations show that these hypotheses are non-mutually exclusive and that their relative influence depends on the time scale considered. Simulations suggest that reef habitat dynamics produced the LDG during deep geological time, while ecological constraints shaped the modern LDG, with a strong influence of the reduction in the latitudinal extent of tropical reefs during the Neogene. Overall, this study illustrates how mechanistic models in ecology and evolution can provide a temporal and spatial understanding of the role of speciation, extinction and dispersal in generating biodiversity patterns.

Purpose: To assess the quality of life in French keratoconus patients., Setting: Fifty-seven Keratoconus National Reference Centers across France., Design: Prospective case series., Methods: Patients completed the National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire-25 (NEI VFQ-25) and a French validated questionnaire on disability and dependency from February to June 2012 when they came for an ophthalmic examination at 57 participating centers across France. An ocular examination including refraction, corneal topography, pachymetry, and slitlamp biomicroscopy was performed. The composite or global NEI VFQ-25 score and the proportion of patients who were dependent (defined by the difficulties with activities of daily living) because of keratoconus were the main evaluation criteria in this study., Results: The study comprised 550 keratoconus patients. Women, corrected distance visual acuity worse than 20/40, steep keratometry higher than 52.0 diopters, history of surgery (corneal transplant, intrastromal corneal ring segments, or corneal crosslinking), and more severe keratoconus according to the Amsler-Krumeich classification were associated with an increasingly negative impact on quality of life (overall scores are significantly lower). Moreover, 4.9% of participants reported having changed their jobs because of keratoconus and 7.8% received keratoconus-related disability. Sixty-nine (12.5%) patients reported having difficulties with activities of daily living and are considered dependent., Conclusion: Keratoconus was associated with a significant reduction in quality of life but it did not result in social exclusion., (Copyright © 2017 ASCRS and ESCRS. The Cretaceous breakup of Gondwana strongly modified the global distribution of shallow tropical seas reshaping the geographic configuration of marine basins. However, the links between tropical reef availability, plate tectonic processes and marine biodiversity distribution patterns are still unknown. Here, we show that a spatial diversification model constrained by absolute plate motions for the past 140 million years predicts the emergence and movement of diversity hotspots on tropical reefs. The spatial dynamics of tropical reefs explains marine fauna diversification in the Tethyan Ocean during the Cretaceous and early Cenozoic, and identifies an eastward movement of ancestral marine lineages towards the Indo-Australian Archipelago in the Miocene. A mechanistic model based only on habitat-driven diversification and dispersal yields realistic predictions of current biodiversity patterns for both corals and fishes. As in terrestrial systems, we demonstrate that plate tectonics played a major role in driving tropical marine shallow reef biodiversity dynamics.

Purpose: To describe a new method to treat severe anterior capsule contraction using a femtosecond laser anterior capsulotomy., Methods: Case report., Results: A 48-year-old woman with a history of myotonic dystrophy experienced a severe contraction of the anterior capsule following an uneventful phacoemulsification cataract surgery with a hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lens implanted in the capsular bag. A femtosecond laser anterior capsulotomy was performed using a non-applanating fluid-filled interface. The spectral-domain optical coherence tomography imaging system associated with the laser enabled precise centration and location of the capsulotomy with a posterior cut located between the anterior surface of the intraocular lens and the anterior capsule inner surface. The free-floating capsulotomy was easily removed after the laser procedure, and 8 days postoperatively visual acuity recovered and myopic shift regressed with an intraocular lens centered in the capsular bag., Conclusions: Femtosecond laser assisted by a high-resolution imaging system appears to be a safe and efficient treatment for severe anterior capsule contraction., (Copyright 2015, SLACK Incorporated.)
