This study presents a novel approach to groundwater resource assessment and drought vulnerability, achieved through integrating cutting-edge deep-learning algorithms into a comprehensive framework. In regions susceptible to drought, ensuring groundwater availability is of paramount importance. Addressing this critical need, our research employs an ensemble of advanced algorithms, including long short-term memory, convolutional neural network, deep neural network, and recurrent neural network. These algorithms are further enhanced through optimization using a genetic algorithm to map groundwater potential zones (GWPZ). Leveraging model validation based on the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUCROC), the long short-term memory-genetic algorithm model emerges as the superior algorithm, boasting the highest values of AUCROC: 0.995 for training and 0.996 for testing). Utilizing this optimized model, this study developed the GWPZ map, subsequently overlaying it with established drought maps developed by the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council across distinct periods—Pre-Kharif, Kharif, and Rabi. The derived baseline GWPZ spatial distribution revealed five categories—very low (34.99%), low (27.67%), moderate (13.26%), high (11.71%), and very high (12.37%)—and their intersection with drought-prone regions, indicative of probabilities of drought occurrence ranging from very severe to low (15.14% to 24.69%). Moreover, employing the best-predicted model, this study projected future GWPZ for 2050 and 2100 using the coupled model intercomparison project 6 general circulation model data under the ambit of three distinct shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs): SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, and SSP5-8.5. Our findings suggested a contraction in the groundwater potential area by the end of the twenty-first century (2100). This pioneering integration sheds light on the intricate relationship between groundwater availability and drought susceptibility, furnishing invaluable insights for formulating targeted water resource management strategies. By amalgamating advanced computational techniques with geospatial analyses, this research contributes to a more comprehensive grasp of water resource dynamics within the context of escalating climate challenges. This paper investigates the consolidation behavior of multi‐layered viscoelastic soils considering groundwater. First, the fractional Merchant viscoelastic model is introduced to describe the behavior of multi‐layered viscoelastic soils considering groundwater. Later, the governing equations are extended to a viscoelastic medium by virtue of the elastic‐viscoelastic corresponding principle in the Laplace–Hankel domain. According to the extended precise integration method, the soil layer is divided into a series of layer units. Then the relationship between general stress vector and general displacement vector on the top and bottom planes is established. Every two adjacent layer units are combined into one layer in each computational iteration. The solutions in the Laplace–Hankel domain are obtained by considering the boundary conditions, and numerical inversion is performed to obtain the solutions in the physical domain. The practicability of the present method is assessed by comparing the numerical results with those in the existing literature and done by ABAQUS. Though groundwater is one of the most significant natural water sources, its quality is deteriorating due to the anthropogenic pressures that poses health risks for people. In this study, potential health risk assessment for nitrate pollution in groundwater of Mersin Province was determined by commonly using health indices. Study findings indicated that the calculated Hazard Index (HI) values varied between 0.001 and 17.89 for the adults whilst the HI values ranging from 0.001 to 29.87 for the children. The HI values in the groundwater of Erdemli, Göksu and Anamur regions showed low chronic health risk for the adults and children (HI=1). However, the calculated health risk indices indicated significant health hazards for the children inhabited between Tarsus and Çeşmeli regions (HI=4.00) due to severe nitrate contamination originated from terrestrial sources. The findings of this study performed in the Mersin Province showed the sustainable management of groundwater policies is needed to reduce nitrate contamination and potential health hazards of the groundwater of studied and other regions in Türkiye. In the Bushveld Complex, South Africa, open pit mines are faced with a challenge of rock slope stability due to geological structures (fractures, faults and dykes) that compartmentalize the rock mass. Geophysical surveys (seismics, magnetics and electrical methods) were conducted in a 0.2 km2 area at Tharisa mine, with the goal to delineate fractures that may be potential conduits for water migration into the pit. Special processing techniques were applied to the dataset to obtain good quality seismic, magnetic and resistivity models. The P‐wave velocity models show distinct low velocities in the centre of the seismic profile, indicating the presence of weak zones associated with faulting or fracturing. Seismic reflection method was used to image the deeper discontinuities and mineralization contacts. Near surface reflections are observed throughout the profiles and are correlated with the contact between the chromitite and host rock. Ground magnetic surveys were conducted to delineate dykes and fractures. De‐trending and de‐culturing techniques were applied on the magnetic data for correcting regional and temporal variations. The low magnetic regions indicate the presence of fracture systems in the subsurface, whereas the high magnetic region is correlated with the dolerite dyke that crosscuts the pit. The electrical resistivity tomography exhibits linear low resistivity contrast zones that differentiate between the fractured and undisturbed hard rock at an estimated depth of 4–10 m. Resistivity shows discontinuities that suggests the presence of fracturing and dyke‐host rock contacts. Correlation among magnetics, P‐wave velocity models, resistivity section and seismic data is evident when overlaying the different datasets, implying that the low magnetic regions are highly weathered and prone to fracturing. The integration of geophysical data is encouraging, because it was able to image the depth to the bedrock, fractures within the host rock and dyke in a complex mining environment. Present study deals with water quality (WQ) assessment season-wise ionic concentration in the Mewat district of Haryana, India. A total of 36 groundwater samples were collected, 12 each for the pre-monsoon, monsoon, and post-monsoon seasons of 2016, to know the status of WQ for drinking and irrigation purposes. Piper, Durov, and Gibbs plots were used to find out the water type and the factors controlling the chemistry of groundwater, respectively. Piper diagram reveals that Ca-Cl and mixed Ca–Mg-C1 typed water during the pre-monsoon, monsoon, and post monsoon season's where- Na-Cl water type indicates salinity problem. Gibb's plot depicted that the weathering of rocks is the major reason behind the ionic chemistry of the groundwater. Water Quality Index (WQI) has been calculated to know the overall WQ based on physico-chemical parameters estimated for this study. It was found that Na+ concentration was dominant among cations and Cl- among anions. Moreover, irrigation indices (KR, RSC, P.I, Cl–/HCO3–,SAR, and Na%) represent that majority of the groundwater samples during pre-monsoon (PRM) season were suitable for agricultural purposes but in monsoon (MON) and post monsoon (POM) season majority of samples lie in an unsuitable zone. The groundwater in the study region presents a high risk of salinization. Using the baseline data generated through this work, there is an immediate need for carrying out a detailed study to address the groundwater issues, understand salinity mechanisms, expansion of salinization in the fresh water aquifers and to suggest suitable management and remedial measures. Geothermal energy is considered renewable energy that is environmentally friendly and sustainable compared to the conventional energy from fossil fuels. However, uncontrolled geothermal exploitation can cause a decrease in the groundwater table and reservoir temperature, such as in the Jaboi volcano on Weh Island, where a power plant has been built to generate electrical energy with an estimated power of 50 MWe but still has not been operated. A geophysical survey is needed to determine the local hydrothermal system, including groundwater reserves under the surface which can be used to refill the hydrothermal wells during exploitation. This study measured vertical electrical sounding (VES) data at 15 points near the crater and geothermal power plant. In addition, very-low-frequency (VLF) data that pass through the crater were also collected to determine the presence of other hydrothermal resources such as fractures and faults. The results of the 1D least-square inversion show three subsurface models where groundwater resources with low resistivity (< 1.5 Ωm) are found at a depth of 50–100 m. The same results are also obtained from the 2D cross-section model that impermeable resistive anomalies in alluvial and tuff rocks dominate the near-surface area. The layer after groundwater is an impermeable rock in the form of breccia. The results of 2D VES and VLF modeling also show the presence of the Ceunohot and Leumomate faults, which are beneficial as fluid access to the surface. Based on the data analysis, the combination of VES and VLF data can be used to image shallow hydrothermal systems such as groundwater resources and faults in the Jaboi volcano. This work looks at developing an object-driven decision support system (DSS) model with the goal of improving the prediction accuracy of the present expert-driven DSS model in assessing groundwater potentiality. The database of remote sensing, geological, and geophysical information was constructed using the technological efficiency of GIS, data mining, and programming tools. Groundwater potential conditioning factors (GPCF) extracted from the datasets include lithology (Li), hydraulic conductivity (K), lineament density (Ld), transmissivity (T), and transverse resistance (TR) for groundwater potentiality mapping in a typical hard rock multifaceted geologic setting in south-western Nigeria. A Python-based entropy approach was used to objectively weight these factors. The weightage findings determined that the greatest and lowest given values for Ld and K were 0.6 and 0.03, respectively. The produced Python-based PROMETHEE-Entropy model algorithm was born through combining the weight findings with the Python-based PROMETHEE-II method. The groundwater potentiality model (GPM) map of the area was created using the model algorithm's outputs on the gridded raster of GPCF themes. Based on the suggested approach, the validated results of the created GPM maps using the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve technique yielded an accuracy of 86%. An object-driven DSS model was created using the approaches that were used. The created object-driven model is a viable alternative to existing approaches in groundwater hydrology and aids in the automation of groundwater resource management in the research region. The study of groundwater samples from Patna, which is in the middle Ganga River basin in the state of Bihar, was done to evaluate the hydrogeochemical nature of groundwater and figure out the controlling factors that affect its ionic chemistry. This study's groundwater samples were taken seasonally from 20 Patna, Bihar locations from 2019 to 2020 and analyzed for their physical and chemical properties using APHA's standard methods. Multivariate statistical techniques, such as Correlation matrix, Principal Component Analysis and Hierarchical cluster analysis, were carried out on the analytical variables, followed by interpreting the groundwater's geochemical nature using Durov Plot, Piper plot, ion-scatter plots and Gibb's diagram. The results obtained were compared with water quality standards prescribed by the Bureau of Indian Standards. The study revealed that groundwater's alkaline nature and water's total hardness varied from hard to very hard categories. Total dissolved solids range from 158 to 575 mg/l, where 31.66% of samples have exceeded the desirable TDS limit for drinking water. The abundance of anions was observed in decreasing order (HCO3− > Cl− > SO42−) during all seasons and cations as Ca2+ > Na+ > Mg2+ > K+ in pre-monsoon and post-monsoon, whereas in monsoon season, it was observed as Mg2+ > Na+ > Ca2+ > K+. Ca2+–Mg2+–HCO3− type water was revealed as the significant hydrogeochemical facie, and the reverse ion exchange process was observed to be the governing factor in 77% of the total groundwater samples. The similarity in average concentration (55 µg/L) of dissolved arsenic in groundwater of active and inactive (moribund) parts of the Ganges–Meghna–Bramhaputra (GMB) delta provokes further research in the domain. The soil–water system of the moribund deltaic region of the western Bengal basin no longer receives arsenic-laced sediments from Himalayan provenances, unlike the active part of the GMB delta. Supply from agricultural and industrial sources is almost absent. Notwithstanding, the problem of arsenic contamination in groundwater in the study area is still persistent even today. The present study, based on adsorption experiments and numerical modelling (HYDRUS-1D software) based on the moribund deltaic region of the Western Bengal basin, suggests that groundwater-based irrigation systems establish a continuous loop of arsenic recycling from soil to groundwater and vice versa to sustain the problem of contamination in the region. The results show that the indigenous silty soils can leach up to 1000 µg/L of arsenic almost throughout the year (325 days), even when the concentrations of arsenic in soils are within the normal range (2.9–3.5 mg/kg). The role of pH, Eh, soil organic carbon (SOC), thickness of the vadose zone and the adsorptive capacity of the soils towards arsenic has been quantified. Collective action arrangements have been successful in allocating scarce resources in small communities around the world. As these arrangements are being used to address broader resource allocation issues, it is critical to understand the context and factors impacting outcomes in larger institutional settings. South Carolina historically has benefited from abundant water supplies, but disputes between various water interests have become more common due to increasing demand for water resources. To address projected demand, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) initiated a process of river basin water management planning, facilitated through formal institutions referred to as River Basin Councils (RBCs), for the eight major river basins of South Carolina. RBCs are tasked with reviewing surface and ground water availability and formulating an implementable consensus-based river basin plan and identifying possible policy recommendations for an updated state water plan. Thirteen of 22 representative stakeholders of the Edisto RBC, the first RBC to start the planning process, participated in semistructured interviews. We found that as stakeholders transitioned to the Edisto RBC, stakeholder goals were informed largely by beliefs about water problems and solutions that originate from large subsystem coalition groups. Furthermore, we found that stakeholders are motivated to compromise with opposing coalition members in an effort to minimize stakeholder sector losses and/or maximize coalition group policy gains. We present average ground‐surface velocities and strain rates for the 1.7 million km2 area of Iran, from the joint inversion of InSAR‐derived displacements and GNSS data. We generate interferograms from 7 years of Sentinel‐1 radar acquisitions, correct for tropospheric noise using the GACOS system, estimate average velocities using LiCSBAS time‐series analysis, tie this into a Eurasia‐fixed reference frame, and perform a decomposition to estimate East and Vertical velocities at 500 m spacing. Our InSAR‐GNSS velocity fields reveal predominantly diffuse crustal deformation, with localized interseismic strain accumulation along the North Tabriz, Main Kopet Dagh, Main Recent, Sharoud, and Doruneh faults. We observe signals associated with recent groundwater subsidence, co‐ and postseismic deformation, active salt diaprism, and sediment motion. We derive high‐resolution strain rate estimates on a country‐ and fault‐scale, and discuss the difficulties of mapping diffuse strain rates in areas with abundant non‐tectonic and anthropogenic signals. Plain Language Summary: Across the entire country of Iran, the ongoing convergence of the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates at about two cm every year is deforming the Earth's crust, producing earthquakes in this process of continental collision. Accurate measurements of how the ground is moving today are critical to understanding both the county‐scale deformation, and the local‐scale earthquake hazard, where the crust is deforming quickly and building up strain that is likely to be released in future major earthquakes. We combine multiple series of satellite radar images with GPS velocities to estimate East and vertical ground motion across all of Iran, at a higher level of detail than previous GPS‐only studies have been able to capture. Our velocity fields show a complex mix of ground motion signals, from crustal deformation on a country‐scale, to rapid land subsidence caused by the extraction of groundwater from aquifers. Some of the major faults are clearly building up strain for future earthquakes, but other regions are deforming much more diffusely, making it difficult to ascertain the locations of any future seismic hazard and ground shaking. Malathion® is a persistent organophosphate pesticide used against biting and chewing insects on vegetables. It is a difficult-to-remove surface contaminant of vegetables and contaminates surface and ground water and soils. Malathion® is only partially water soluble, but use of detergent carriers makes adhering Malathion® residues difficult to subsequently remove. Magnetically treated water (MTW) successfully removed Malathion® from Chinese Kale (Brassica oleracea L.), meeting Maximum Residue Load (MRL) standards. Samples were soaked in MTW for 30 min prior to detection with GC/MS/MS, 98.5±3.02% of Malathion® was removed after washing by MTW. Groundwater resources are crucial to socio-economic development and the ecosystem, and over-extraction can cause the groundwater level to drop, deplete reserves, and trigger geological hazards like land subsidence. The North China Plain (NCP) has experienced both subsidence and groundwater depletion due to over-extraction in the past 70 years. In this study, we used MT-InSAR technology and ascending C-band Sentinel-1 SAR data from 2017 to 2023 to study land deformation in the junction area of Shijiazhuang–Baoding–Cangzhou–Hengshui. We identified multiple subsidence funnels with a maximum rate exceeding −150 mm/year and a total deformation surpassing 600 mm. Seasonal decomposition methods accurately separated seasonal signals in the time-series deformation and groundwater level data. An exponential function model applied to long-term deformation showed no significant decrease in subsidence in severely affected areas. By modeling seasonal deformation and seasonal groundwater levels, we determined the elastic skeletal storage coefficients (Ske) to be in the range of 1.02 × 10−3~6.53 × 10−3 in subsidence areas. We obtained the spatiotemporal evolution of the total groundwater storage (TGWS), irreversible ground storage (IGWS), and recoverable ground storage (RGWS). The TGWS and IGWS decreased annually while the RGWS increased, which is attributable to the implementation of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP) and the issuance of groundwater withdrawal policies in the NCP. Mining activities have increased the potential risks of metal pollution to the groundwater resources in arid areas across the globe. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the health risk associated with nickel (Ni) in the groundwater sources of a mining-impacted area, South Khorasan, Eastern Iran. A total of 110 stations were included in the study, comprising 62 wells, 40 qanats, and 8 springs in summer, 2020. Initially, the collected samples were tested for temperature, pH, and electrical conductivity (EC). Subsequently, the samples were filtered and treated with nitric acid (HNO3) to measure the concentration of Ni using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). Hazard quotient (HQ) and non-carcinogenic risk assessments were employed to evaluate the potential risks of Ni to the inhabitants. The findings revealed that the concentration of Ni ranged from 0.02 to 132.39 μg l−1, and only two stations exhibited Ni concentrations above the WHO standards (20 μg l−1). The results demonstrated that 98.21% of the sampled locations had HQ values below one, indicating negligible risk, while 1.78% of the stations exhibited HQ values of one or higher, representing a high non-carcinogenic risk for water consumers. Overall, the concentration of nickel in the groundwater of South Khorasan exceeded the World Health Organization (WHO) limit solely in the Halvan station, posing a non-carcinogenic risk for the residents in that area, and therefore, additional efforts should be made to provide healthier groundwater to consumers in this region. The paleochannels in coastal areas may be the priority channels for saltwater intrusion, and identifying paleochannels is important for revealing the pollution mechanisms of coastal zone aquifers and protecting groundwater resources. The use of electrical methods to identify paleochannels has become common. Still, the highly dynamic hydrological characteristics of saltwater intrusion area and the differences in the conductive properties of saltwater and freshwater increase the uncertainty of the interpretation process. This study combined groundwater numerical simulation data, hydrochemical data and stratigraphic data to construct an electrical model of the paleochannel, which provides a reference for the interpretation of paleochannel using ERT data. The paleochannel electrical model constructed by combining multiple sources of data reflects the spatial heterogeneity of resistivity values of paleochannel in different seasons and at varying levels of saltwater intrusion, making the identification of paleochannel in saltwater intrusion areas more accurate. The results show that the paleochannel shows high resistivity anomalies relative to the background stratigraphy in brackish water areas, and low resistivity anomalies relative to the background stratigraphy in freshwater areas. Land use/land cover (LULC) changes significantly impact spatiotemporal groundwater levels, posing a challenge for sustainable water resource management. This study investigates the long-term (2000–2022) influence of LULC dynamics, particularly urbanization, on groundwater depletion in Kabul, Afghanistan, using geospatial techniques. A time series of Landsat imagery (Landsat 5, 7 ETM+, and 8 OLI/TIRS) was employed to generate LULC maps for five key years (2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2022) using a supervised classification algorithm based on Support Vector Machines (SVMs). Our analysis revealed a significant expansion of urban areas (70%) across Kabul City between 2000 and 2022, particularly concentrated in Districts 5, 6, 7, 11, 12, 13, 15, 17, and 22. Urbanization likely contributes to groundwater depletion through increased population growth, reduced infiltration of precipitation, and potential overexploitation of groundwater resources. The CA-Markov model further predicts continued expansion in built-up areas over the next two decades (2030s and 2040s), potentially leading to water scarcity, land subsidence, and environmental degradation in Kabul City. The periodic assessment of urbanization dynamics and prediction of future trends are considered the novelty of this study. The accuracy of the generated LULC maps was assessed for each year (2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2022), achieving overall accuracy values of 95%, 93.8%, 85%, 95.6%, and 93%, respectively. These findings provide a valuable foundation for the development of sustainable management strategies for Kabul's surface water and groundwater resources, while also guiding future research efforts. Microbial pollution of recreational waters leads to millions of skin, respiratory, and gastrointestinal illnesses globally. Fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) are monitored to assess recreational waters but may not reflect the presence of Staphylococcus aureus, a global leader in bacterial fatalities. Since many community‐acquired S. aureus skin infections are associated with high recreational water usage, this study measured and modeled S. aureus, methicillin‐resistant S. aureus (MRSA), and FIB (Enterococcus spp., Clostridium perfringens) concentrations in seawater and sand at six beaches in Hilo, Hawai'i, USA, over 37 sample dates from July 2016 to February 2019 using culturing techniques. Generalized linear models predicted bacterial concentrations with physicochemical and environmental data. Beach visitors were also surveyed on their preferred activities. S. aureus and FIB concentrations were roughly 6–78 times higher at beaches with freshwater discharge than at those without. Seawater concentrations of Enterococcus spp. were positively associated with MRSA but not S. aureus. Elevated S. aureus was associated with lower tidal heights, higher freshwater discharge, onsite sewage disposal system density, and turbidity. Regular monitoring of beaches with freshwater input, utilizing real‐time water quality measurements with robust modeling techniques, and raising awareness among recreational water users may mitigate exposure to S. aureus, MRSA, and FIB. One alternative adsorbent (AA) and five ion exchange (IX) resins were tested for the removal of per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from groundwater in pilot‐scale columns for up to 19 months using empty bed contact times (EBCTs) representative of full‐scale treatment. For the six detected PFAS in the pilot feed water, the long‐chain PFAS (perfluorooctanoic acid [PFOA], perfluorooctanesulfonic acid [PFOS], and perfluorohexanesulfonic acid [PFHxS]) were well removed with only PFOA, which is a perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acid (PFCA) eventually breaking through as the media became exhausted. Perfluorobutanesulfonic acid (PFBS), a short‐chain perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA), was also well removed, whereas short‐chain PFCAs (perfluoropentanoic acid [PFPeA] and perfluorobutanoic acid [PFBA]) were not removed (i.e., immediate breakthrough). Overall, IX and AA demonstrated superior removal of PFSAs compared to PFCAs (i.e., later breakthrough of PFSAs translating to longer media life). Media life varied, ranging from 6 to 15 months before adsorbents reached a significant PFOA breakthrough. The performance of the two adsorbents piloted at shorter EBCT reasonably predicted the longer (representative) pilot EBCT results (within ±20–30%) for the same adsorbents following data scaling. This suggests that pilot‐scale testing may be conducted at a faster pace and therefore more economically. Ferriphaselus amnicola GF-20 is the first Fe-oxidizing bacterium isolated from the continental subsurface. It was isolated from groundwater circulating at 20 m depth in the fractured-rock catchment observatory of Guidel-Ploemeur (France). Strain GF-20 is a neutrophilic, iron- and thiosulfate-oxidizer and grows autotrophically. The strain shows a preference for low oxygen concentrations, which suggests an adaptation to the limiting oxygen conditions of the subsurface. It produces extracellular stalks and dreads when grown with Fe(II) but does not secrete any structure when grown with thiosulfate. Phylogenetic analyses and genome comparisons revealed that strain GF-20 is affiliated with the species F. amnicola and is strikingly similar to F. amnicola strain OYT1, which was isolated from a groundwater seep in Japan. Quantification of uranium levels was done in the water samples collected from different groundwater sources in the Shivalik hills of outer Himalaya using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS). The uranium concentration in analyzed samples varying from BDL to 16.137 µg L−1 is observed below 30 µg L−1 advocated by World Health Organization. The estimation of human health risks in terms of hazard quotients and dose quantities is presented in the paper. An effort has also been made to evaluate the retention of uranium levels in human body organs using ICRP's biokinetic model. In this work, we investigated the feasibility of ammonium removal by electrodialysis (ED), a well‐known electro‐membrane process, based on the selective migration of anions and cations through anion exchange membranes (AEMs) and cation exchange membranes (CEMs). ED experiments are performed using a laboratory pilot. The ion exchange membranes (IEMs) pair used is AXE/CMX, AXE as an AEMs and CMX as a CEMs. The first tests are performed with real groundwater solutions from Kenitra city (Morocco), spiked with an initial concentration of 3 mg/L NH4Cl. The results gave a specific demineralization (SD) to NH4+ ions of 84.60 %; for a demineralization rate (DR) of 80 % and a time of 60 min. The multivariate principal component analysis (PCA) presents a total inertia of 99.23 %, the majority of the variables of which are positively correlated on the C1 axis with a variance of 95.5 % than that of C2 of 3.78 %. The quality of the diluted water determined by the Legrand‐Poirier method showed that the water was aggressive and that the addition of 4.54 mg/L Ca2+ was necessary to balance the water and make it fit for human consumption. In arid and semiarid coastal areas, freshwater resources are scarce and are frequently affected by salinization processes. The aim of this work is to evaluate the influence of Late Quaternary climatic events on the hydrogeologic characteristics conditioning the distribution of fresh, brackish, and saline ground water in the Holocene and Pleistocene beach ridges in coastal aquifers of northern Patagonia. To achieve this, geologic, geomorphological, geophysical, hydrochemical, and isotopic studies were carried out, which allowed the identification of the hydrolithologic characteristics controlling groundwater salinity in a context of Quaternary geologic–geomorphological–climatic evolution. In Pleistocene beach ridges, it was recognized that the formation of calcretes in an arid period after Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5e conditioned the permeability of superficial sediments, strongly decreasing infiltration rates. During the Holocene, beach ridges were deposited and sea water entered the Pleistocene ridges. Subsequently, with the sea-level drop and wetter climatic conditions, rainwater began to infiltrate, recharging the aquifers and displacing seawater, allowing development of freshwater lenses. However, freshwater lenses only developed in Holocene ridges due to the lower permeability of Pleistocene ridges, which determines that in these geoforms, sea water cannot be displaced by rainwater, and therefore groundwater is brackish to saline. Beijing, China's capital city, has experienced decades of severe land subsidence due to the long-term overexploitation of groundwater. The implementation of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP) and artificial ecological restoration have significantly changed Beijing's hydro-ecological and geological environment in recent years, leading to a widespread rise in groundwater levels. However, whether the related land subsidence has slowed down or reversed under these measures has not yet been effectively monitored and quantitatively analyzed in terms of time and space. Accordingly, in this study, we proposed using an improved time-series deformation method, which combines persistent scatterers and distributed scatterers, to process Sentinel-1 images from 2015 to 2022 in the Beijing Plain region. We performed a geospatial analysis to gain a better understanding of how the new hydrological conditions changed the pattern of deformation on the Beijing Plain. The results indicated that our combined PS and DS method provided more measurements both in total quantity and spatial density than conventional PSI methods. The land subsidence in the Beijing Plain area has been effectively alleviated from a subsidence region of approximately 1377 km2 in 2015 to only approximately 78 km2 in 2022. Ecological restoration areas in the northeastern part of the Plain have even rebounded over this period, at a maximum of approximately 40 mm in 2022. The overall pattern of ground deformation (subsidence and uplift) is negatively correlated with changes in the groundwater table (decline and rise). Local deformation is controlled by the thickness of the compressible layer and an active fault. The year 2015, when anthropogenic water transfers were eliminated and ecological measures to recharge groundwater were implemented, was the crucial turning point of the change in the deformation trend in the subsidence history of Beijing. Size exclusion chromatography with total organic carbon detection (HPSEC-TOC) is a widely employed technique for characterizing aquatic natural organic matter (NOM) into high, medium, and low molecular weight fractions. This study validates the suitability of HPSEC-TOC for a simplified yet efficient routine analysis of freshwater and its application within drinking water treatment plants. The investigation highlights key procedural considerations for optimal results and shows the importance of sample preservation by refrigeration with a maximum storage duration of two weeks. Prior to analysis, the removal of inorganic carbon is essential, which is achieved without altering the NOM composition through sample acidification to pH 6 and subsequent N2-purging. The chromatographic separation employs a preparative TSK HW-50S column to achieve a limit of detection of 19.0 µgC dm−3 with an injection volume of 1350 mm−3. The method demonstrates linearity up to 10,000 µgC dm−3. Precision, trueness and recovery assessments are conducted using certified reference materials, model compounds, and real water samples. The relative measurement uncertainty in routine analysis ranges from 3.22% to 5.17%, while the measurement uncertainty on the bias is 8.73%. To examine the driver of groundwater depletion, this paper estimates a dynamic panel regression model using district-level secondary data from 1995 to 2017. Results show that the number of rainwater-harvesting structures, annual average rainfall, forest cover and net sown area improve groundwater levels. Tube well irrigation and rice cultivation can adversely affect groundwater levels. The positive relationship between surface water and improved groundwater level is consistent in all the estimated models. Groundwater is the single largest source of water for irrigation and domestic use in India. Climate change further exacerbates the threat of depletion, reducing food security and increasing the vulnerabilities of resource users. Governance is complicated by externalities associated with its attributes as an invisible and fluid resource which create problems of rivalry and exclusion. Based on theory-based case studies for evaluation of selected World Bank projects, we analyse challenges for groundwater governance and identify factors that contribute to depletion. In South Africa, approximately 98% of the predicted total surface water resources are already being used up. Consequently, the National Water Resource Strategy considers groundwater to be important for the future planning and management of water resources. In this case, quantifying groundwater budgets is a prerequisite because they provide a means for evaluating the availability and sustainability of a water supply. This study estimated the regional groundwater budgets for the Inkomati‐Usuthu Water Management Area (Usuthu, Komati, Sabie‐Sand, and Crocodile) using the classical hydrological continuity equation. The equation was used to describe prevailing feedback loops between groundwater draft, recharge, baseflow, and storage change. The results were coarser scale estimates which, beforehand, were derived from the 2006 study. In the years to follow, groundwater reliance intensified and there was also the historic 2015/2016 drought. This inevitably led to an increased draft while the rest of the components of the groundwater budgets experienced decreases. Both Crocodile and Sabie‐Sand experienced groundwater storage depletion which led to reduced baseflow and groundwater availability, while groundwater recharge contrarily increased due to capture. Conversely, the other two catchments experienced relatively lower drafts with correspondingly higher groundwater availability and recharge while storage change was positive. The results highlighted the need for adaptive water management whose effectiveness relies on predictive studies. Consequently, future models should be developed to capture the spatial and temporal dynamism of the natural groundwater budget due to climate change, water demands, and population growth predictions. The intensity of global groundwater use rose from 124 m3 per capita in 1950 to 152 m3 in 2021, for a 22.6% rise in the annual per capita use. This rise in global per capita water use reflects rising consumption patterns. The global use of groundwater, which provides between 21% and 30% of the total freshwater annual consumption, will continue to expand due to the sustained population growth projected through most of the 21st century and the important role that groundwater plays in the water‐food‐energy nexus. The rise in groundwater use, on the other hand, has inflicted adverse impacts in many aquifers, such as land subsidence, sea water intrusion, stream depletion, and deterioration of groundwater‐dependent ecosystems, groundwater‐quality degradation, and aridification. This paper projects global groundwater use between 2025 and 2050. The projected global annual groundwater withdrawal in 2050 is 1535 km3 (1 km3 = 109 m3 = 810,713 acre‐feet). The projected global groundwater depletion, that is, the excess of withdrawal over recharge, in 2050 equals 887 km3, which is about 61% larger than in 2021. This projection signals probable exacerbation of adverse groundwater‐withdrawal impacts, which are worsened by climatic trends and the environmental requirement of groundwater flow unless concerted national and international efforts achieve groundwater sustainability. The Jiangcang Basin is an important mining area of the former Qilian Mountain large coal base in Qinghai Province, and understanding the groundwater circulation mechanism is the basis for studying the hydrological effects of permafrost degradation in alpine regions. In this study, hydrogeochemical and multiple isotope tracer analysis methods are used to understand the chemical evolution and circulation mechanisms of the groundwater in the typical alpine region of the Jiangcang Basin. The diversity of the groundwater hydrochemistry in the study area reflects the complexity of the hydrogeochemical environment in which it is located. The suprapermafrost water and intrapermafrost water are recharged by modern meteoric water. The groundwater is closely hydraulically connected to the surface water with weak evaporation overall. The high δ34S value of deep groundwater is due to SO4 reduction, and SO42−‐rich snow recharge with lixiviated sulfate minerals are the main controlling factor for the high SO42− concentration in groundwater. According to the multivariate water conversion relationships, it reveals that the river receives more groundwater recharge, suprapermafrost water is recharged by the proportion of meteoric water, which is closely related to the mountainous area at the edge of the basin, while intrapermafrost water is mainly recharged by the shallow groundwater. This study provides a data‐driven approach to understanding groundwater recharge and evolution in alpine regions, in addition to having significant implications for water resource management and ecological environmental protection in coal bases of the Tibetan Plateau. Assimilating recent observations improves model outcomes for real‐time assessments of groundwater processes. This is demonstrated in estimating time‐varying recharge to a shallow fractured‐rock aquifer in response to precipitation. Results from estimating the time‐varying water‐table altitude (h) and recharge, and their error covariances, are compared for forecasting, filtering, and fixed‐lag smoothing (FLS), which are implemented using the Kalman Filter as applied to a data‐driven, mechanistic model of recharge. Forecasting uses past observations to predict future states and is the current paradigm in most groundwater modeling investigations; filtering assimilates observations up to the current time to estimate current states; and FLS estimates states following a time lag over which additional observations are collected. Results for forecasting yield a large error covariance relative to the magnitude of the expected recharge. With assimilating recent observations of h, filtering and FLS produce estimates of recharge that better represent time‐varying observations of h and reduce uncertainty in comparison to forecasting. Although model outcomes from applying data assimilation through filtering or FLS reduce model uncertainty, they are not necessarily mass conservative, whereas forecasting outcomes are mass conservative. Mass conservative outcomes from forecasting are not necessarily more accurate, because process errors are inherent in any model. Improvements in estimating real‐time groundwater conditions that better represent observations need to be weighed for the model application against outcomes with inherent process deficiencies. Results from data assimilation strategies discussed in this investigation are anticipated to be relevant to other groundwater processes models where system states are sensitive to system inputs. Hydraulic fracturing (HF) events consume high volumes of water over a short time. When groundwater is the source, the additional pumping by rig/frack supply wells (RFSWs) may impose costs on owners of other sector wells (OSWs) by lowering the hydraulic head. The Carrizo–Wilcox aquifer in south Texas is the main source of water for HF of the Eagle Ford Shale (EFS) Play. The objectives are to assess the impacts of groundwater pumping for HF supply on: (1) hydraulic heads in OSWs located nearby an RFSW and (2) volumetric fluxes between layers of the regional aquifer system compared to a baseline model without the effect of RFSW pumping. The study area spans the footprint of the EFS Play in Texas and extends from 2011 to 2020. The pumping schedules of 2500 RFSWs were estimated from reported pumped water volumes to supply 22,500 HF events. Median annual drawdowns in OSWs ranged from 0.2 to 6.6 m, whereas 95th percentile annual drawdowns exceeded 20 m. The magnitudes of drawdown increased from 2011 to 2020. Of the four layers that comprise the Carrizo–Wilcox aquifer, the upper Wilcox was the most intensively pumped for HF supply. During the peak HF year of 2014, the net flux to the upper Wilcox was 292 Mm3 compared to the baseline net flux for the same year of 278 Mm3—a relative gain of 14 Mm3. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is one of the most frequent childhood dystrophies, affecting cardiopulmonary functions and walking ability. One of the main symptoms is fatigue, which is caused by altered muscle metabolism related to energy expenditure (EE). Aquatic physiotherapy is a therapeutic modality that facilitates the maintenance of this posture because of immersion on the body. This cross-sectional observational study aimed to compare the EE on the ground and water of individuals with DMD through oxygen consumption in the maintenance of sitting posture. The individuals were in a sitting position on the ground and in the water for 20 min for the assessments. The variables peripheral oxygen saturation, heart rate, maximum expiratory pressure, maximum inspiratory pressure, forced vital capacity, respiratory quotient (RQ), and oxygen consumption per kilogram of body weight (VO 2 /kg) were compared, adopting a significance of 5 %. No difference was found between medians and quartiles of RQ when comparing the two environments. The same was observed for VO 2 /Kg values on the ground and in water. Human activities have seriously affected the quality of shallow groundwater in coal mining areas and understanding the spatial and temporal evolution of groundwater is a widespread concern. This study was conducted to determine the primary hydrogeochemical processes in the Sunan Mining region, China. We collected 84 groundwater samples from a Quaternary loose aquifer and tested the macronutrient content using standard methods. Multivariate statistical analysis and hydrochemical analysis were conducted to analyze the sources and formation mechanisms of groundwater constituents in the early, middle, and late stages of mining. Results show that the water quality evolved from Cl·SO4-Na.Ca type to SO4-Na.Ca type. Mineral dissolution, halite dissolution, cation exchange, and desulfurization primarily occurred in the groundwater, and the hydrogeochemistry was strong in the northern part of the study area; however, the degree of both dissolution and reaction gradually weakened with increasing mining activities. Groundwater resources are depleting worldwide owing to climate change and exponential rise in population. In order to manage groundwater resources, consideration must be given to availability of the groundwater and the functioning of the aquifer system. In this regard, the present study aims to explore groundwater potential zones for Guercif, Morocco for highlighting the importance of groundwater resources management. The groundwater potential zones are investigated using multicriteria decision analysis technique in GIS software from perspectives of slope, drainage density, land use landcover, geology, soil type and groundwater levels. As per results, poor groundwater potential zones in the study area were minimum (about 1 km²) followed by excellent (257 km²), fair (632 km²), moderate (2710 km²) and good (6064 km²) groundwater potential zones, respectively. Watershed of the study area has good groundwater potential zones of about 62.75% whereas only 0.01% falls in poor groundwater potential zones. The current research concluded that estimating the groundwater potential zones using GIS and RS remote sensing techniques could saves time and money as compared to the conventional methods. The study is recommended for decisions making and managing the groundwater resources for betterment of the region in future. Levels of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in surface and underground water sources from Ifite Ogwari, Ayamelum Local Government Area of Anambra State were investigated. Ecological and human health exposure risks were assessed following US EPA methods. The surface water sources are Isiachala, Iyiutu, Ube, Ahala Tabasi, Nabaloku, Atammele, Ogbu streams, and Omambala river. Underground water sources include Igbazine, Double, Ogba, Onowulugbe, Orator, and Commodore hand-dug wells. The water samples were collected using precleaned 500 cm3 glass bottles and were analysed for the presence of 16 US EPAPAHs using Gas Chromatography – Flame Ionisation Detector (GC- FID). The validated method showed that regression (R2) for all the PAHs ranged between 0.9622 and 0.9983. Limits of detection (LOD) ranged from 0.0033 to 0.1236 µg L−1 and limits of quantification (LOQ) from 0.0109 to 0.4115 µg L−1. Precision CV values ranged from 5.12 to 18.24%, and recovery values of the analytes in water varied between 83.94 and 99.99%. Naphthalene and chrysene were present in all the water samples while pyrene was absent in all except in Iyiutu. All the PAHs analysed were detected in Isiachala and Iyiutu except pyrene which was absent in Isiachala. All the samples contained at least three PAHs with concentrations ranging from 1.003 ng/µl of benzo[a] pyrene in Tabasi to 128.652 ng/µl of chrysene in Iyiutu. Ecological risk shows that the value was above US EPA background value. Human health risk assessment depicts that hazard index and total cancer risk ranges from 9.63E-05 to 1.93E-02. This study has shown that the inhabitants of Ifite Ogwari will experience adverse health and cancer illnesses over some time and therefore, a holistic approach by researchers and government agencies is needed to mitigate the ecological and health risk effects. Strut-free retaining walls are an efficient and cost-effective technology for large-scale excavations, but their application at excavation depths of more than 10 m in soft soils has rarely been reported. An innovative multibench retaining system composed of an inclined–vertical framed retaining wall (IVFRW) and a cantilever wall with anchors was used in a 14.7-m-deep excavation in soft clay in Tianjin, China. To analyze the pile–soil interaction considering the influence of the second stepped excavation, indicators were monitored to provide comprehensive measured data. Field measurements included the lateral deflection and vertical displacement of the retaining wall, the ground water level variation, the ground settlement, and the axial force of the piles within the IVFRW. The measured results indicated that the wall displacements and the ground movements caused by the excavations were small in comparison to those of previous projects and empirical formulas. The influence of the second stepped excavation on the soil|structure interaction and its influence on the axial force of the IVFRW were analyzed. The optimal values of the first stepped excavation depth (H1) for different site conditions were further investigated. This case study reports an application of multibench excavation with IVFRW in a 14.7-m excavation in soft soil area. Compared with propped excavations, the multibench excavation with IVFRW has comparable wall deflection while greatly reducing the material consumption and the construction duration. In addition, the amount of pile wall and pile wall length is greatly reduced in comparison to conventional multibench excavations in similar soil condition and excavation depths. This case history provides an economic and efficient strategy for professional engineers to integrate a similar solution in design. During the excavation process, the compressive stress accumulated on the inclined piles within IVFRW restricting the displacement of retaining structure. Due to the second stepped excavation affecting the development of the axial force of the inclined piles, the optimal excavation depth H1/He varies. In engineering design, a width of earth berm should be first determined according to the available workspace. In situ chemical injection technology is widely used in groundwater contamination remediation projects because of its high efficiency and low disturbance. Hydrodynamic dispersion is the basis for reagent transport in groundwater. Efficient diffusion and directional delivery processes of reagents in contaminated groundwater areas are key to controlling remediation efficiency. The complex subsurface environment and the limited efficacy of existing treatment technologies pose significant challenges for groundwater contamination remediation. Inhomo-geneous hydrodynamics in groundwater channels with heterogeneous media lead to significant uncertainties in the migration of reagents. Here, we conducted a systematic review to assess the nonideal transport behavior of remediation reagents under convection-dispersion, the blocking effect of heterogeneous media pores, and the kinetic process of reactive migration in saturated aquifers. The dilemma problems of low migration rate, unknown directionality, and nontargeted reactions encountered by reagents in porous groundwater media are systematically discussed from an environmental geological perspective. On this basis, we emphasize the strategies for the targeted control of reagent transport based on the regulation of the anthropogenic hydrodynamic flow field and density effects, an auxiliary strategy for regulating the target action of remediation to reduce nontarget reactions. Finally, future research needs are proposed to advance the development of engineering practices for green and sustainable in situ remediation technologies for contaminated groundwater. Landfill leachate forms when waste-inherent water and percolated rainfall transfer are highly toxic, corrosive, acidic, and full of environmental pollutants. The release of leachate from municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill sites poses a severe hazard to human health and aquatic life. This study examined the impact of leachate from Delhi's Ghazipur landfill on the nearby groundwater quality. Analysis of leachate samples was done to determine various parameters such as total dissolved solids (TDS), hardness, alkalinity, electrical conductivity, pH, BOD5, COD, nitrate, sulphate, chloride and iron, and presence of coliform bacteria. Significant dissolved elements (22,690–34,525 mg/L) were observed in the samples, indicated by the high conductivity value (1156–1405 mho/cm). However, a stable pH range (6.90–7.80) of leachate samples was observed due to high alkalinity concentrations between 2123 and 3256 mg/L. The inverse distance weighing (IDW) interpolation tool from QGIS 3.22.7 developed spatial interpolated models for each parameter across the Ghazipur area. The IDW interpolated graphs of various parameters over the whole study area confirmed these contaminations. In addition, leachate and groundwater samples were physio-chemically analyzed, and temporal fluctuation in landfill waste has also been studied. The temporal fluctuation results showed that when heat is produced, transmitted, and lost throughout the waste system, the maximum temperature position fluctuates over time. Hydrothermal geothermal energy, as a widely distributed, large reserve and easily exploitable renewable source, can be used for both power generation and building heating. In this study, a numerical simulation of heat extraction performance is conducted based on monitoring well temperature data in a geothermal field in Xiong'an New Area. The effects of the reinjection temperature, injection flow rate, and reinjection rate on the outlet temperature and the reservoir temperature during a long-term operation are analyzed. The results indicate that the lower reinjection temperature can generate a critical disturbance scope for the thermal reservoir during the exploitation process. The impact scope on the thermal reservoir can reach 210.3 m at a reinjection temperature of 25 °C, which is not conducive to maintaining the outlet temperature of production wells in the long-term. The reinjection rate significantly affects both the horizontal and vertical temperature fields of the thermal reservoir. Under reinjection conditions of 30 °C and 40 kg/s, the horizontal and vertical impact scope of the thermal reservoir are 262.3 and 588.5 m, respectively. The reinjection rate is inversely related to the outlet temperature. A decrease from 100% to 70% in the reinjection rate can increase the outlet temperature by 4.21%. However, a decrease in the reinjection rate will lead to a decline in the groundwater level. This study addresses the imperative to comprehend gravity shifts resulting from groundwater storage (GWS) variations in the Arabian Peninsula. Despite the critical importance of water resource sustainability and its relationship with gravity, limited research emphasizes the need for expanded exploration. The investigation explores the impact of GWS extraction on the gravity field, utilizing Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) data in addition to validation using the WaterGAP Global Hydrology Model (WGHM). Spanning April 2002 to June 2023, this study predicts GWS trends over the next decade using the Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA) model. The comprehensive time-series analysis reveals a significant GRACE-derived groundwater storage (GWS) trend of approximately −4.90 ± 0.32 mm/year during the study period. This trend has a notable impact on the gravity anomaly (GA) values, as observed through the decomposition analysis. The projected GWS indicates a depletion rate of 14.51 km3/year over the next decade. The correlation between GWS and GA is substantial at 0.80, while the GA and rainfall correlation is negligible due to low precipitation rates. Employing multiple linear regression explains 80.61% of the variance in gravity anomaly due to GWS, precipitation, and evapotranspiration. This study investigates climate change factors—precipitation, temperature, and evapotranspiration—providing a holistic understanding of the forces shaping GWS variations. Precipitation and evapotranspiration exhibit nearly equal values, limiting GWS replenishment opportunities. The national-scale British Groundwater Model (BGWM) is implemented to simulate groundwater dynamics and budgets in Great Britain. Notwithstanding the challenges of integrating a very large amount of data, finding a trade-off between computational efficiency and realism, performing automatic calibration, and addressing multiple sources of structural and parameter uncertainty, a quantitative–qualitive evaluation approach showed that the BGWM provides a reasonably accurate digital representation of groundwater systems and processes at a national scale. In this work, the model was applied to understand the variability of budget components across multiple spatial and temporal scales. Comparisons showed regional differences linked to lithological and climatic factors, which in turn can be associated with more or less groundwater resilience to extreme climatic events. There is confidence that the current and future versions of the BGWM can become valuable tools for effective water resources management and adaptation strategies under future climatic and population changes. AbstractIn a world where plastics have become an integral part of daily life, the ubiquitous presence of microplastics (MPs) is hardly surprising. However, the emergence of MPs in one of humanity’s most vital resources—groundwater—is concerning. This review explores the widespread reports of MPs in drinking water, examining their origins and the potential effects of their associated pollutants on human health. The exploration was facilitated through an exhaustive analysis of research contributions across the topic. Instances of MPs infiltrating drinking water have been documented across 42 countries, including Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Iceland, Nepal, Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The identification of the sources of these MPs is crucial, and this review clarifies several significant contributors. The sources encompass atmospheric contamination, the packaging and distribution processes associated with bottled water, effluents generated from laundry activities, fertilizers, and the domestic/industrial wastewater streams. Furthermore, the review emphasizes the role of MP particles as carriers, facilitating the transportation of heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants, and emergent contaminants into drinking water. While scientific evidence to definitively establish the impacts of MPs on human health remains an evolving field, it is paramount to recognize that their associated pollutants have tangible effects that warrant attention. Among the potential effects highlighted are anemia, brain cancer, hypertension, intestinal bleeding, methemoglobinemia, and liver cancer. Addressing the pressing need for actionable measures, this review offers practical strategies to counter the presence of existing MPs in drinking water and mitigate their further proliferation. The insights and recommendations presented herein are anticipated to provide valuable contributions toward the resolution of the menace posed by MP contamination in drinking water, as well as the broader challenge of plastic pollution at large. In comparison to biodiversity on Earth's surface, subterranean biodiversity has largely remained concealed. The olm (Proteus anguinus) is one of the most enigmatic extant cave inhabitants, and until now little was known regarding its genetic structure and evolutionary history. Olms inhabit subterranean waters throughout the Dinaric Karst of the western Balkans, with a seemingly uniform phenotypic appearance of cave‐specialized traits: an elongate body, snout and limbs, degenerated eyes and loss of pigmentation ("white olm"). Only a single small region in southeastern Slovenia harbours olms with a phenotype typical of surface animals: pigmented skin, eyes, a blunt snout and short limbs ("black olm"). We used a combination of mitochondrial DNA and genome‐wide single nucleotide polymorphism data to investigate the molecular diversity, evolutionary history and biogeography of olms along the Dinaric Karst. We found nine deeply divergent species‐level lineages that separated between 17 and 4 million years ago, while molecular diversity within lineages was low. We detected no signal of recent admixture between lineages and only limited historical gene flow. Biogeographically, the contemporaneous distribution of lineages mostly mirrors hydrologically separated subterranean environments, while the historical separation of olm lineages follows microtectonic and climatic changes in the area. The reconstructed phylogeny suggests at least four independent transitions to the cave phenotype. Two of the species‐level lineages have miniscule ranges and may represent Europe's rarest amphibians. Their rarity and the decline in other lineages call for protection of their subterranean habitats. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
