Environmental microbes routinely colonize wildlife body surface microbiota. However, animals experience dynamic environmental shifts throughout their daily routine. Yet, the effect of ecological shifts in wildlife body surface microbiota has been poorly explored. Here, we sequenced the hypervariable region V3–V4 of the 16S rRNA gene to characterize the body surface microbiota of wild Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) under two ecological contexts: (1) Penguins walking along the coast and (2) Penguins sheltered underground in their nest, across three subantarctic breeding colonies in the Magellan Strait, Chile. Despite ecological contexts, our results revealed that Moraxellaceae bacteria were the most predominant and abundant taxa associated with penguin body surfaces. Nevertheless, we detected colony‐specific core bacteria associated with penguin bodies. The most abundant were: Deinococcus in the Contramaestre colony, Fusobacterium in the Tuckers 1 colony, and Clostridium sensu stricto 1 in the Tuckers 2 colony. Our results give a new perspective on the niche environmental hypothesis for wild seabirds. First, the ecological characteristics of each colony were associated with the microbial communities from the nest soil and the body surface of penguins inside the nests. For example, in the colonies with heterogenous vegetation cover (i.e. the Tuckers Islets), there was a similar microbial composition between the nest soil and the body surface of penguins. Factors influencing the geochemical migration of elements during the development of artificial phytocenoses on industrially polluted peat soil with a high level of copper and nickel content using serpentine-containing materials are considered. Monitoring of the remediation sites during a four-year field experiment showed that the grass cover is capable of sustainable functioning by neutralizing the acidity of peat soil, reducing the toxicity of soil solutions, and eliminating the imbalance of macronutrients. Forest ground vegetation may serve as an early warning system for monitoring anthropogenic global-change impacts on temperate forests. Climate warming may induce a decline of cool-adapted species to the benefit of more thermophilous plants. Nitrogen deposition has been documented to potentially result in soil eutrophication or acidification, which can increase the proportion of species with higher nutrient requirements and species impoverishment caused by competitive exclusion. Abiotic forest disturbances are changing the light conditions in the forest understorey environment. In this resurvey study, we tested the magnitude and direction of change in alpha (species richness) and beta (within-site dissimilarity) diversity and composition of forest ground vegetation in forests of different types in Slovenia over fifteen years. Using plant-derived characteristics (Ellenberg-type indicator values) and by testing a priori predictions concerning expected effects of environmental drivers, we show that the magnitude and direction of forest ground vegetation diversity and floristic changes varies greatly between forest sites. Divergent responses at different sites resulted in low net change of alpha and beta diversity and a weak overall environmental signal. The largest decrease in species number was observed in lowland oak-hornbeam forests, which were also among the sites with the greatest compositional shifts. Changes in beta diversity did not show any consistent trend, and anticipated floristic convergence was not confirmed when all sites were considered. Thermophilization was mainly detected in montane beech sites and alpine spruce forests whereas eutrophication signal was most significant on nutrient-poor sites. Vegetation responses were strongly dependent on initial site conditions. Shrinkage of ecological gradients (process of ecological homogenization) suggests that sites positioned at the ends of the gradients are losing their original ecological character and are becoming more similar to mid-gradient sites that generally exhibit smaller changes. Our results point to the importance of local stand dynamics and overstorey disturbances in explaining the temporal trends in forest ground vegetation. Wildfires and climate change increasingly are transforming vegetation composition and structure, and postfire management may have long‐lasting effects on ecosystem reorganization. Postfire aerial seeding treatments are commonly used to reduce runoff and soil erosion, but little is known about how seeding treatments affect native vegetation recovery over long periods of time, particularly in type‐converted forests that have been dramatically transformed by the effects of repeated, high‐severity fire. In this study, we analyze and report on a rare long‐term (23‐year) dataset that documents vegetation dynamics following a 1996 post‐fire aerial seeding treatment and a subsequent 2011 high‐severity reburn in a dry conifer landscape of northern New Mexico, USA. Repeated surveys between 1997 and 2019 of 49 permanent transects were analyzed for differences in vegetation cover, richness, and diversity between seeded and unseeded areas, and to characterize the development of seeded and unseeded vegetation communities through time and across gradients of burn severity, elevation, and soil‐available water capacity. Seeded plots showed no significant difference in bare ground cover during the initial years postfire relative to unseeded plots. Postfire seeding led to a clear and sustained divergence in herbaceous community composition. Seeded plots had a much higher cover of non‐native graminoids, primarily Bromus inermis, a likely contaminant in the seed mix. High‐severity reburning of all plots in 2011 reduced native graminoid cover by half at seeded plots compared with both prefire levels and with plots that were unseeded following the initial 1996 fire. In addition, higher fire severity was associated with increased non‐native graminoid cover and reduced native graminoid cover. This study documents fire‐driven ecosystem transformation from conifer forest into a shrub‐and‐grass‐dominated system, reinforced by aerial seeding of grasses and high‐severity reburning. This unique long‐term dataset illustrates that post‐fire seeding carries significant risks of unwanted non‐native species invasions that persist through subsequent fires—thus alternative postfire management actions merit consideration to better support native ecosystem resilience given emergent climate change and increasing disturbance. This study also highlights the importance of long‐term monitoring of postfire vegetation dynamics, as short‐term assessments miss key elements of complex ecosystem responses to fire and postfire management actions. Understanding plant adaptive strategies to aridity is crucial for ecological research, particularly in the current context of climate change and increasing drought. This study focuses on the intraspecific phenotypic variation of the wild olive (Olea europaea subsp. europaea var. sylvestris), one of the most emblematic species of the Mediterranean Basin, widely distributed in Morocco. The research is based on measuring nine leaf and plant-size related traits in 130 trees across 13 populations under varying climate conditions and vegetation covers. The study explores the adaptive strategies of wild olive trees in response to increasing aridity and aridification. The results indicate that the nine traits exhibit significant covariation trends along environmental gradients, reflecting plant strategies related to resource acquisition, resource investment, and water use. Wild olive trees demonstrate substantial intraspecific variation both among and within populations in response to these environmental gradients. Climate, altitude, and vegetation cover together explain 93.8% of the trait covariations. The study elucidates the mechanisms underlying the adaptive strategies of wild olive trees to cope with stressful conditions. The findings suggest that wild olive trees adapt to stressful environments by adopting a conservative strategy, characterized by lower resource investment and higher water-use efficiency. This research underscores the importance of considering intraspecific variation in plant responses to environmental stressors and demonstrates the utility of trait-based approaches in understanding plant strategies under such conditions. Barrier islands provide a first line of defense against ocean flooding and storm surge. Biogeomorphic interactions are recognized as important in coastal system processes, but current barrier island models are primarily dominated by physical processes. Recent research has demonstrated different biogeomorphic states that influence response to sea level rise and other disturbance. Building on this understanding, we present a cellular model utilizing biotic and abiotic processes and their interactions for barrier island evolution. Using the literature and field derived parameters, we model barrier island evolution and compare to three decades of change for Smith Island, a Virginia Coast Reserve barrier island. We conduct simulations that show the impact of biogeomorphic states on island migration under different sea level rise scenarios. We find that migration is highest in areas with low topography and light vegetation cover (i.e. disturbance reinforcing) compared to areas with greater topographic complexity and high cover of woody vegetation i.e. disturbance resisting). This study demonstrates the importance of biogeomorphic interactions for barrier island evolution with sea level rise and will aid future predictions for these important ecosystems with climate change. We analysed ground vegetation in 250 plots in 2018 in the old‐growth Picea abies‐dominated forest Säby Västerskog, south‐east Sweden as a follow‐up of studies in 1946 and 1998 with the same layout of plots. The vegetation changes were not clearly directional: the species composition in 2018 was intermediate between that of 1946 and 1998, whereas in 1998 species richness was higher and with the unique presence of a number of species indicating small‐scale disturbances. Vaccinium myrtillus increased in cover since 1946 and Avenella flexuosa decreased. This goes against regional trends that have been attributed to nitrogen deposition. The spatiotemporal evolution of vegetation and its influencing factors is crucial for understanding the relationship between vegetation and climate change, which helps guide the management of regional ecosystems effectively. Utilizing the Fractional Vegetation Cover (FVC) data and various meteorological elements from 1982 to 2021, this research employed methodologies, such as grey relational analysis, path analysis, and the time-lag effect, to examine the impact of climate change on FVC fluctuations. It introduced a comprehensive qualitative and quantitative analysis of the multi-factor climate–vegetation relationship, enhancing the understanding of the interaction between the climate and vegetation growth. The findings indicate that 77.41% of the wetland vegetation cover in the Yellow River Basin (YRB) has significantly decreased. Precipitation and evapotranspiration emerged as the primary factors affecting FVC, with soil moisture and temperature having a lesser impact. Given the crucial influence of climate factors' time lag on vegetation dynamics, especially the notable cumulative lag effects observed in arid regions, such as precipitation accumulating over approximately 1.963 months (on average) and evapotranspiration lagging by about 1.727 months (on average), this study offers valuable theoretical insights on vegetation restoration efforts amidst the challenges posed by climate change. Natural vegetation in and around crops effectively increases predators. Semi‐natural habitats (SNHs; non‐crop vegetation) surrounding crops provide refuge and resources. However, the function of SNHs may depend on several factors, and the response of natural predators may vary among crops and regions. Here, we examined the spider community in a SNH and at an adjacent vineyard in a semi‐arid region of Argentina. We collected spiders in a gradient from an adjacent SNH, towards the vineyard at three distances from the SNH using two techniques: beating and pit‐fall traps. We collected spiders in December and February during two consecutive years at two strata: in vegetation and on the ground. In vegetation, spider abundance significantly decreased from SNH towards the interior of the vineyard at 80 m. On the ground, spider abundance was also significantly higher in SNH. However, after decreasing at the 5 and 20 m sites inside the vineyard, the abundance increased at 80 m. For foliage spiders, species richness followed the same pattern as abundance, whereas ground spider richness significantly increased from SNH to the interior of the vineyard. Species composition also showed different tendencies between foliage and ground spiders. The foliage spider community differed between SNH vs. all the vineyard sites. Contrarily, at the ground stratum, SNH was similar in composition to the edge of the vineyard, and they both differed from the other vineyard sites. We found that the adjacent SNH influenced the spider community in the vineyard and that this effect depended on the distance from that habitat and the association of the community to various strata. These results highlight the importance of studying the whole community of spiders when aiming to increase predator abundance to enhance biological control in this kind of crop. Tardigrades (Tardigrada) are a phylum of micrometazoans found in all biomes on Earth, but their ecology and habitat preferences remain vastly understudied. Boreal peatlands include a diversity of habitat types and high structural heterogeneity that represents an interesting system to study some of the poorly known habitat preferences of tardigrades. Here, we investigate for the first time tardigrade communities in peatland mosses and the latter's potential associations with key environmental variables. We collected 116 moss samples from 13 sites representing different peatland types and management histories. We found that tardigrades are common and diverse in boreal peatlands, as tardigrades were present in 72% of the collected samples and we identified 14 tardigrade genera. Tardigrade abundance seemed to increase alongside the increasing tree basal area and the density was higher in the microtopographic level further from the water table level, that is, hummocks (mean 117/moss gram) than in lawns/hollows (mean 84/moss gram). Furthermore, the highest tardigrade density was found in the moss taxa that are associated with forested peatland types (i.e., feather mosses) (321 mean/moss gram). Finally, we found interesting patterns regarding tardigrade functional diversity, as carnivorous tardigrades were found only in peatlands with tree basal area > 20 m2 and mostly in hummocks. Our study demonstrates that the habitat heterogeneity of peatlands (e.g., variation in moisture and vegetation cover) represents an interesting system to study tardigrade ecology and habitat preferences. However, since we found variation in tardigrade abundance and communities across peatland types and microhabitats within peatlands, our results highlight that such studies should be conducted with numerous replicate samples and a systematic study design that properly addresses the habitat heterogeneity between and within different peatland types. [Objective] This research aims to explore the temporal and spatial status of the ecological quality evolution and the main driving factors of its evolution in the Loess Plateau, and to provide the theoretical basis for the improvement of regional ecological quality and sustainable development in the Yellow River Basin. Methods] Based on the 'Driving Force-Pressure-State-Impact-Response' (DPSIR) model, 14 indexes reflecting the social and economic situations, natural environment and ecological governance were selected to build the comprehensive evaluation index system. The weight of each index was defined by the analytical hierarchy process (AHP), and the comprehensive evaluation indexes were calculated by the weighted average. The Ridge Regression Model was used to quantitively assess the driving factors of the ecological quality evolution. [Results] The ecological quality of the Loess Plateau in the Yellow River Basin exhibited a distinctive spatiotemporal heterogeneity, with the high-quality areas concentrating in the midstream and low quality areas in the upstream, showing the unique spatial pattern of high-quality in the southeast and low- quality in the northwest'. The medium-quality areas and above increased from 40.56% in 2000 to 70.36% in 2020. The ecologically improved areas in the past 2 decades took up 94.44% of the total research area, and the ecologically improved counties accounted for 91.57% of the total counties. The Ridge Regression Model explained 99.4% of the ecological evolution, demonstrating the relatively higher contributions from the vegetative cover and the annual precipitation to such evolution. [Conclusion] The ecological quality in the Loess Plateau was improved, and the spatiotemporal evolution of ecological quality was mainly driven by vegetative cover and annual precipitation. [Objective] The aims of this study are to reveal the temporal and spatial evolution characteristics of mountain torrent disaster risk and its influencing mechanism on the Loess Plateau over the past 30 years, and to provide a scientific basis for the development of comprehensive prevention and control strategies for mountain torrent disasters on the Loess Plateau. [Methods] Based on the data of rainfall, vegetation cover, population density and so on, the risk assessment system of mountain torrent disaster was established. By integrating GIS and analytic hierarchy process (AHP), the mountain torrent disaster risks on the Loess Plateau in 1990 and 2020 were comprehensively evaluated based on the risk distribution map of each driving factor. [Results (1) The high-risk areas were mainly distributed in the southwest, south and east of the Loess Plateau. These areas had the characteristics of high rainfall intensity, dense population, developed economy and large cultivated land area. (2) During the period from 1990 to 2020, the overall risks of mountain torrent disasters on the Loess Plateau increased, showing that the areas with high risk expanded to its surroundings on the original basis, among which the southeast of Shanxi Province, the northwest of Qinghai Province and the northeast of Inner Mongolia were the most obvious. [Conclusion] The increased rainfall intensity, population density and GDP are the main driving factors on the increase of mountain torrent disaster risks in the past 30 years. An understanding of how boreal forest composition responds to global environmental changes is an important challenge to predicting the future global carbon balance. Boreal forests are the most significant sink for atmospheric carbon dioxide; however, their sequestration capacity is highly sensitive to ongoing climate changes. The combination of the hydrothermal conditions of a territory strongly regulates its biogeochemical processes. The carbon fluxes in boreal forests are strongly mediated by the ground vegetation cover, composed of mosses (mesic) and lichens (xeric). Despite the concurrence of xeric and mesic vegetation types, their responses to climate variations varies significantly. Soil emission is an informative indicator of ecosystem functioning. In this study, we focused on the soil CO2 dynamics during frost-free seasons with different precipitation regimes in the xeric and mesic boreal ecosystems of Central Siberia. Seasonal measurements of soil CO2 emissions were conducted during frost-free seasons using the dynamic chamber method. Our findings reveal that the precipitation regimes of each year may control the seasonal soil emission dynamics. The soil moisture is the most important driver of emissions growth in the water-limited lichen pine forest (R2adj. = 18%). The soil temperature plays the largest role in the feather moss pine forest during the dry (R2adj. = 31%) seasons, and in the lichen pine forest during the wet (R2adj. = 41%) seasons. The cumulative efflux for the xeric and mesic sites is mostly related to the hydrothermal conditions, and not to the differences in ground vegetation cover. During the dry seasons, on average, the soil CO2 emissions are 45% lower than during the wet seasons for both sites. Leaf area index (LAI) is an important agrometeorological index and a key variable which is influenced by many physical, biological and physiological processes in plant communities. This study evaluates the ability of RegCM model in simulating LAI using CLM land surface model in two states of static and dynamic vegetation cover for the period of 1991–2005. Two GCM models (CanESM2 and EC-Earth) are applied to determine the boundary conditions. The temperature at 2 m above ground and precipitation data were collected from 106 synoptic stations (Iran). Also, the ERA5 reanalysis data were implemented as the reference to evaluate the simulated LAI data. To identify the climate types of the selected sites, De Martonne climate classification was used. The results show the highest correlation coefficient (0.78) between simulated LAI of CLM (by CanESM2-RegCM-CLM model) versus reference LAI of ERA5. For the sites located in arid and Mediterranean climate regions, the LAI simulated by CanESM2-RegCM-CLM model presented the least deviations compared to the reference ERA5 data. Model results showed that for both CanESM2 and EC-Earth models, the static vegetation cover tends to overestimate the simulated LAI; but, the activation of carbon-nitrogen feedback within the models leads to underestimation of vegetation cover in the region. Future work is suggested for evaluating other agrometeorological indices (e.g. NDVI, EVI) to detect the dynamic feedback of carbon-nitrogen cycle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Southeast Australian saltmarshes are endangered ecological communities under threat from various anthropogenic factors including climate change. As climate change drives sea‐level rise mangrove encroachment and saltmarshes are squeezed at their landward edge, our lack of knowledge of the ecological interactions and any associations between saltmarsh vegetation and fauna becomes concerning, especially given the importance of saltmarsh for fisheries and as a blue carbon habitat. This study investigated the association of saltmarsh vegetation and the abundance and movement of gastropods in a typical coastal saltmarsh at Patonga, New South Wales, Australia. Densities of the gastropods including Phallomedusa solida, Ophicardelus spp. and Littoraria luteola were significant in vegetated Salicornia quinqueflora and least in unvegetated saltmarsh and areas where mangroves had encroached. Experiments that translocated Ophicardelus spp. and manipulated cover revealed that these patterns were actively maintained by Ophicardelus spp., which dispersed up to 40 cm and 1.4 m after 3 and 24 h, respectively, away from unvegetated saltmarsh and mangroves. The results of this study suggest that both habitat and cover influence the abundance and movement of gastropod dynamics in southeastern saltmarsh. Given future anticipated saltmarsh loss, further investigations are needed on the unknown functional role of gastropods in saltmarsh ecosystems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: As an exceptional geographical entity, the vegetation of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP) exhibits high sensitivity to climate change. The Baima Snow Mountain National Nature Reserve (BNNR) is located in the southeastern sector of the QTP, serving as a transition area from sub-tropical evergreen broadleaf forest to high-mountain vegetation. However, there has been limited exploration into predicting the temporal and spatial variability of vegetation cover using anti-interference methods to address outliers in longterm historical data. Additionally, the correlation between these variables and environmental factors in natural forests with complex terrain has rarely been analyzed. Methods: This study has developed an advanced approach based on TS (Theil-Sen slope estimator) MK (Mann-Kendall test)-FVC (fractional vegetation cover) to accurately evaluate and predict the time and spatial shifts in FVC within the BNNR, utilizing the GEE (Google Earth Engine). The satellite data utilized in this paper consisted of Landsat images spanning from 1986 to2020. By integrating TS and MK methodologies to monitor and assess the FVC trend, the Hurst index was employed to forecast FVC. Furthermore, the association between FVC and topographic factors was evaluated, the partial correlation between FVC and climatic influences was analyzed at the pixel level (30×30m). Results and discussion: Here are the results of this research: (1) Overall, the FVC of the BNNR exhibits a growth trend, with the mean FVC value increasing from 59.40% in 1986 to 68.67% in 2020. (2) The results based on the TS-MK algorithm showed that the percentage of the area of the study area with an increasing and decreasing trend was 59.03% (significant increase of 28.04%) and 22.13% (significant decrease of 6.42%), respectively. The coupling of the Hurst exponent with the Theil-Sen slope estimator suggests that the majority of regions within the BNNR are projected to sustain an upward trend in FVC in the future. (3) Overlaying the outcomes of TS-MK with the terrain factors revealed that the FVC changes were notably influenced by elevation. The partial correlation analysis between climate factors and vegetation changes indicated that temperature exerts a significant influence on vegetation cover, demonstrating a high spatial correlation. Understanding the distribution patterns of biodiversity is a pivotal challenge in ecology, exacerbated by the escalating frequency of anthropogenic events with severe consequences. This urgency underscores the need for comprehensive investigations, as exemplified by our study, which focuses on evaluating the effects of environmental and spatial variables on Odonata distribution across a gradient of vegetation cover in the eastern Amazonia landscape. In our investigation, we aimed to test the hypothesis that the distribution pattern of species in the suborder Zygoptera is significantly different from that of species in the suborder Anisoptera, considering that the environment is a more important factor for Zygoptera. Sampling was conducted across 27 streams within a landscape altered by various human activities, resulting in changes to riparian forests, sediment influx, and bank destabilization. Environmental alterations were quantified using the Habitat Integrity Index (HII) in conjunction with water's physical-chemical variables. We register 29 Odonata species/morphospecies, reflecting a significant biodiversity. Our hypothesis regarding the differing distribution patterns of species from the Odonata suborders Anisoptera and Zygoptera due to their ecophysiological distinctions was confirmed. This underscores that environmental and spatial factors serve as the primary determinants shaping the structure of Zygoptera suborder assemblages, given that the studied streams harbored environments that greatly impede the dispersal of species within this suborder. This study contributes valuable insights into the interplay between environmental changes induced by land use alterations and the resulting impacts on Odonata biodiversity in the Amazonian landscape. Extreme (i.e., centennial‐scale) floods are by definition rare and can therefore be difficult to study. As a result, case studies of response to extreme floods can provide unique insights. On 15 November 2021, the Nicola River in British Columbia, Canada, experienced a 200‐year flood that increased the average width of the Nicola River by more than 50% (35 m), leaving the only highway in the region impassable for nearly 12 months. This research assesses the spatial variability of erosion along a 71‐km‐long segment of the Nicola River during a period with a large flood (2015–2018) and a second period containing the extreme flood in 2021 (2018–2021). We use a random forest statistical analysis to explore the most important valley and channel characteristics affecting relative widening during both periods. Unit stream power, gradient and valley confinement were the primary determinants of erosion during the extreme flood, whereas vegetation cover, channel pattern and surficial material were less important. Erosion during the large flood event was not related to these variables, with channel pattern providing a better indication of widening potential. As the Nicola River is flanked by erodible glacial deposits, this work provides important insight into river response in the paraglacial environments that are common throughout much of Canada and the northern United States, as well as Europe and Asia, but less intensely studied. In these settings, the geomorphic response to large floods may not be representative of the potential erosion (and infrastructure impacts) that can occur during extreme events, which destabilize glacial terraces in confined reaches. Historical observations should therefore be used with caution in paraglacial settings as extreme events may not be captured in available data, creating a perception of stability in confined reaches that may have the potential to erode dramatically during extreme events. Identifying the effect of precipitation, vegetation cover and underlying surface conditions on run‐off and soil loss is essential for understanding the mechanism of water erosion. The study site is located in the Shiqiaopu watershed of Hubei Province, China. The long‐term (2017–2021) monitoring data for this study included rainfall characteristics, antecedent soil moisture, run‐off and soil loss in four run‐off plots with four vegetation cover types (tea garden, soybean and rape, peanut and rape, and vetiver zizanioides). K‐means clustering and discriminant analysis were used to classify rainfall patterns. The improved redundancy analysis was used to quantitatively explore the relative importance of rainfall characteristics, vegetation cover and antecedent soil moisture to run‐off and soil loss. The results showed that the rainfall patterns were mainly divided into three categories: A (medium duration, small rainfall, medium rain intensity, high frequency), B (long duration, large rainfall, light rain intensity, low frequency) and C (short duration, medium rainfall, heavy rain intensity, medium frequency). The average run‐off coefficient, run‐off depth of different rainfall patterns were C > B > A, and the cumulative run‐off depth and soil loss under the A rainfall pattern were the largest. For the run‐off plots with four vegetation cover types, vetiver zizanioides had the best effect on run‐off and sediment reduction, while peanut and rape had the worst effect. The driving factor that contributed the most to the run‐off depth was vegetation cover (19.36%), and rainfall characteristics explained the most to the soil loss (11.65%). We also found that although antecedent soil moisture had a small explanation rate for soil loss, it was significantly correlated with the run‐off depth under the vegetation cover of the tea garden. Degradation from overgrazing of global arid rangelands is of significant concern for this widespread terrestrial ecosystem, and the people who rely on its sustainable use. Addressing this degradation requires a better understanding of how livestock removal and conservation management actions affect the rehabilitation of land condition. However, the dominant effect of climate and meteorological variability on arid vegetation makes isolating management‐induced change a difficult task. We present an analytically simple method for measuring relative land condition by assessing differences in remote‐sensing‐derived persistent fractional vegetation between adjacent stocked and destocked regions over time. The 22‐year observation period focusses on vegetation recovery at a long‐established sheep station after the removal of livestock and the introduction of conservation‐focussed management. The study region, in the southern Australian arid rangelands, comprises sparsely vegetated chenopod shrublands and acacia woodlands across low‐lying plains. Comparison is made to immediately surrounding stocked properties in a spatial design where climate and biogeographic variables remain consistent across the study area. We found an unequivocal relative increase in vegetation cover, and reduction of bare ground cover at the destocked property that became evident approximately 8 years after a reduction in grazing pressure. Distinctly higher persistent vegetation cover was maintained, even during periods of drought. Non‐photosynthetic vegetation cover was most indicative of long‐term change and increased by 1.1% relative to surrounding areas. Photosynthetic vegetation cover increased by 0.5%, while bare ground cover decreased by 2.1%. These cover changes, particularly in the non‐photosynthetic vegetation and bare ground components spatially coincide with the fenced boundary of the destocked property. Synthesis and applications: The ability to quantify management‐related impacts in land condition using freely available remote sensing data could support improved management by all stakeholders in these regions. The method leverages readily available satellite remote sensing data in a study design that is not dependent on large geospatial and climatic datasets that are not necessarily available in remote regions. As an ecologically sensitive area with significant desertification problems, the Ring-Tarim Basin has a fragile ecological environment that is vulnerable to both natural and anthropogenic factors. Accurate long-term vegetation observations are ecologically, socially, and economically important for desertification control. In this study, based on the ground-measured data and the fractional vegetation cover (FVC) inversion dataset obtained by the image element dichotomy method, we used the methods of slope-trend analysis and multiple-regression residual analysis to analyze the spatial and temporal characteristics of the vegetation cover in the desertified area of the Ring-Tarim Basin. At the same time, we assessed the impacts of climate change and human activities on vegetation changes and the contribution of driving forces. The results showed that (1) The annual mean value of FVC in the growing season in the Ring-Tarim Basin generally showed a fluctuating and increasing trend during the period of 1993–2021; a decreasing trend during 1993–1999, with a change rate of −0.13 × 10−2a−1; and the fastest increasing trend during 2010–2021, with a change rate of 0.23 × 10−2a−1. (2) The effects of climate change and human activities on FVC changes in the growing season had great spatial heterogeneity. The areas where climate change and human activities had no significant effect on FVC changes in the growing season accounted for 86.25% and 77.91%, respectively, the areas where climate and human activities promoted FVC increase in the growing season accounted for 10.53% and 16.37%, respectively, and the areas where climate and human activities inhibited FVC increase in the growing season accounted for 3.22% and 5.72%, respectively. (3) About 76.9% of the FVC changes in the area around the Ring-Tarim Basin were caused by climate change and human activities. In addition to the eastern part of the study area, the vegetation cover of the oases in the west, north, and south generally showed an increasing trend, and the increasing area was proportional to the distribution density of the oasis cities. The trend of vegetation change in the area of the oasis and the fringes of the oasis was drastic. The contribution and inhibition of human activities to FVC, and the driving force of FVC change were greater than that of climate change. More than half of the area had an anthropogenic contribution of more than 60%, indicating that China's ecological projects have had a significant effect on vegetation change in the extreme arid regions. Transferring topsoil to severely degraded areas, such as mined areas, is an effective restoration technique. However, topsoil from pristine areas is a limited resource, making it important to seek techniques that optimize its use. Thus, this study assessed the effects of adding a small topsoil volume (10 L/m2 or 1 cm layer), a seed mix of 14 species, and litter (30 L/m2) alone and in different combinations in the restoration of a rupestrian grassland area degraded by bauxite mining. The substrate in the degraded area was turned prior to applying treatments. Vegetation cover, density of individuals, and species richness were measured 30 months after the experiment was set up. The isolated use of each material and the simultaneous addition of topsoil to the seed mix were not effective. The simultaneous use of topsoil, litter, and seed mix provided the best result, presenting the highest vegetation coverage (60%), density (67 ind/m2), and species richness (26 in 12 m2). Although, to a lesser extent, the combination of seed mix and litter also presented satisfactory results. The combination of the three materials promoted the revegetation of an area that had been without vegetation for around 50 years, presenting a density of individuals and species richness comparable to those obtained with the use of thick topsoil layers (15–30 cm). Savanna ecosystems across the globe have experienced substantial changes in their vegetation composition. These changes can be attributed to three main processes: (1) encroachment, which refers to the expansion of woody plants into open areas, (2) thicketization, which is characterized by the growth of sub-canopy woody plants, and (3) disturbance, defined here as the removal of woodland cover due to both natural forces and human activities. In this study, we utilized Landsat surface reflectance data and Sentinel-1 SAR data to track the progression of these process from 1996 to 2022 in the significantly modified Post Oak Savannah ecoregion of Central Texas. Our methodology employs an ensemble classification algorithm, which combines the results of multiple models, to develop a more precise predictive model, along with the spectral-temporal segmentation algorithm LandTrendr in Google Engine (GEE). Our ensemble classification algorithms demonstrated high overall accuracies of 94.3 and 96.5% for 1996 and 2022, respectively, while our LandTrendr vegetation map exhibited an overall accuracy of 80.4%. The findings of our study reveal that 9.7% of the overall area experienced encroachment of woody plants into open area, while an additional 6.8% of the overall area has transitioned into a thicketized state due to the growth of sub-canopy woody plants. Furthermore, 5.7% of the overall area encountered woodland disturbance leading to open areas. Our findings suggest that these processes advanced unevenly throughout the region, resulting in the coexistence of three prominent plant communities that appear to have long-term stability: a dense deciduous shrubland in the southern region, as well as a thicketized oak woodland and open area mosaic in the central and northern regions. The successional divergence observed in these plant communities attests to the substantial influence of human modification on the landscape. Collections of vertebrates and macroinvertebrates over two years from 26 lentic temporary water bodies each surveyed 1–4 times, in Ulster and Dutchess counties in the Hudson Valley of New York, USA, resulted in identifications of 166 species. These included species resident in temporary waters that have life stages resistant to drying and freezing, species that reproduce in temporary waters that need to mature before drying occurs, predatory species that visit temporary waters, and highly aquatic species that move overland to temporary waters. Temporary waters sampled had a range of hydroperiods from a few weeks to almost a year. Of the macroinvertebrates we identified to species, 75 were each collected in a single pool-survey (n = 62 pool-surveys). Pools with greater volume, more vegetation cover, lower pH and turbidity, and more sodium yielded greater species richness of macroinvertebrates, and species richness of certain taxa (eg Mollusca) were correlated with additional elements. This study develops a model to assess building vulnerability across Xinxing County by integrating quantitative derivation with machine learning techniques. Building vulnerability is characterized as a function of landslide hazard risk and building resistance, wherein landslide hazard risk is derived using CNN (1D) for nine hazard-causing factors (elevation, slope, slope shape, geotechnical body type, geological structure, vegetation cover, watershed, and land-use type) and landslide sites; building resistance is determined through quantitative derivation. After evaluating the building susceptibility of all the structures, the susceptibility of each village is then calculated through subvillage statistics, which are aimed at identifying the specific needs of each area. Simultaneously, different landslide hazard classes are categorized, and an analysis of the correlation between building resistance and susceptibility reveals that building susceptibility exhibits a positive correlation with landslide hazard and a negative correlation with building resistance. Following a comprehensive assessment of building susceptibility in Xinxing County, a sample encompassing different landslide intensity areas and susceptibility classes of buildings was chosen for on-site validation, thus yielding an accuracy rate of the results as high as 94.5%. Questions: Plant cover values in vegetation plot data are bounded between 0 and 1, and cover is typically recorded in discrete classes with non‐equal intervals. Consequently, cover data are skewed and heteroskedastic, which hampers the application of conventional regression methods. Recently developed ordinal beta regression models consider these statistical difficulties. Our primary question is whether we can detect species trends in vegetation plot time series data with this modelling approach. A second question is whether trends in cover have additional value compared to trends in occurrence, which are easier to assess for practitioners. Location: The Netherlands, Western Europe. Methods: We used vegetation plot data collected from 10,000 fixed plots which were surveyed once every four years during 1999–2022. We used the ordinal zero‐augmented beta regression (OZAB) model, a hierarchical model consisting of a logistic regression for presence and an ordinal beta regression for cover. We adapted the OZAB model for longitudinal data and produced estimates of cover and occurrence for each four‐year period. Thereafter we assessed trends in cover and in occurrence across all periods. Results: We found evidence of a trend in cover in 318 out of the 721 species (44%) with sufficient data. Most species showed similar directional trends in occurrence and percent cover. No trend in occurrence was detected for 64 species that had evidence of a trend in cover. Declining species had stronger relative changes in cover than in occurrence. Conclusions: Our model enables researchers to detect trends in cover using longitudinal vegetation plot data. Cover trends often corroborated trends in occurrence, but we also regularly found trends in cover even in the absence of evidence for trends in occurrence. The Taihangshan-Yanshan region (TYR) is an important ecological barrier area for Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, and the effectiveness of its ecological restoration and protection is of great significance to the ecological security pattern of North China. Based on the FVC data from 2000 to 2021, residual analysis, parametric optimal geodetector technique (OPGD) and multi-scale geographically weighted regression analysis (MGWR) were used to clarify the the multivariate driving mechanism of the evolution of FVC in the TYR. Results show that: (1) FVC changes in the TYR show a slowly fluctuating upward trend, with an average growth rate of 0.02/10a, and a spatial pattern of "high in the northwest and low in the southeast"; more than half of the FVC increased during the 22-year period. (2) The results of residual analysis showed that the effects of temperature and precipitation on FVC were very limited, and a considerable proportion (80.80% and 76.78%) of the improved and degraded areas were influenced by other factors. (3) The results of OPGD showed that the main influencing factors of the spatial differentiation of FVC included evapotranspiration, surface temperature, land use type, nighttime light intensity, soil type, and vegetation type (q > 0.2); The explanatory rates of the two-factor interactions were greater than those of the single factor, which showed either nonlinear enhancement or bifactorial enhancement, among which, the interaction of evapotranspiration with mean air and surface temperature has the strongest effect on the spatial and temporal evolution of FVC (q = 0.75). Surface temperature between 4.98 and 10.4 °C, evapotranspiration between 638 and 762 mm/a, and nighttime light between 1.96 and 7.78 lm/m2 favoured an increase in vegetation cover, and vegetation developed on lysimetric soils was more inclined to be of high cover. (4) The correlation between each variable and FVC showed different performance, GDP, elevation, slope and FVC showed significant positive correlation in most regions, while population size, urban population proportion, GDP proportion of primary and secondary industries, and nighttime light intensity all showed negative correlation with FVC to different degrees. Accurate and reliable estimation of actual evapotranspiration (AET) is essential for various hydrological studies, including drought prediction, water resource management, and the analysis of atmospheric–terrestrial carbon exchanges. Gridded AET products offer potential for application in ungauged areas, but their uncertainties may be significant, making it difficult to identify the best products for specific regions. While in situ data directly estimate gridded ET products, their applicability is limited in ungauged areas that require FLUXNET data. This paper employs an Extended Triple Collocation (ETC) method to estimate the uncertainty of Global Land Evaporation Amsterdam Model (GLEAM), Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FLDAS), and Maximum Entropy Production (MEP) AET product without requiring prior information. Subsequently, a merged ET product is generated by combining ET estimates from three original products. Furthermore, the study quantifies the uncertainty of each individual product across different vegetation covers and then compares three original products and the Merged ET with data from 645 in situ sites. The results indicate that GLEAM covers the largest area, accounting for 39.1% based on the correlation coefficient criterion and 39.9% based on the error variation criterion. Meanwhile, FLDAS and MEP exhibit similar performance characteristics. The merged ET derived from the ETC method demonstrates the ability to mitigate uncertainty in ET estimates in North American (NA) and European (EU) regions, as well as tundra, forest, grassland, and shrubland areas. Understanding the phenology of urban trees can help mitigate the heat island effect by strategically planting and managing trees to provide shade, reduce energy consumption, and improve urban microclimates. In this study, we carried out the first evaluation of high spatial resolution satellite images from Landsat-8, Sentinel-2, and PlanetScope images to quantify urban street tree phenology in downtown Beijing. The major research goals are to evaluate the consistency in pixel-level spring–summer growth period phenology and to investigate the capacity of high-resolution satellite observations to distinguish phenological transition dates of urban street trees. At the city scale, Landsat-8, Sentinel-2, and PlanetScope show similar temporal NDVI trends in general. The pixel-level analysis reveals that green-up date consistency is higher in areas with medium (NDVI > 0.5) to high (NDVI > 0.7) vegetation cover when the impacts of urban surfaces on vegetation reflectance are excluded. Similarly, maturity date consistency significantly increases in densely vegetated pixels with NDVI greater than 0.7. At the street scale, this study emphasizes the efficacy of NDVI time series derived from PlanetScope in quantifying the phenology of common street tree genera, including Poplars (Populus), Ginkgos (Ginkgo), Chinese Scholars (Styphnolobium), and Willows (Salix), in downtown Beijing to improve urban vegetation planning. Based on PlanetScope observations, we found that the four street tree genera have unique phenological patterns. Interestingly, we found that the trees along many major streets, where Chinese Scholars are the major tree genus, have later green-up dates than other areas in downtown Beijing. In conclusion, the three satellite observation datasets prove to be effective in monitoring street tree phenology during the spring–summer growth period in Beijing. PlanetScope is effective in monitoring tree phenology at the street scale; however, Landsat-8 may be affected by the mixture of land covers due to its relatively coarse spatial resolution. The Aalenian–Bajocian (early Middle Jurassic) cooling event (ABCE) was a significant global climate disturbance during the Jurassic. Our analysis of sporopollen fossils from 18 mudstone and silty mudstone samples, collected from the lacustrine-terrestrial succession Xishanyao Formation in the Santanghu Basin, Northwest China, revealed a total of 191 species belonging to 53 genera. We identified an assemblage, the Cyathidites–Deltoidospora–Osmundacidites–Cycadopites assemblage, which dates to the Aalenian–Bajocian (early Middle Jurassic). This assemblage can be further divided into three subassemblages in stratigraphic order: the Cyathidites–Osmundacidites–Cycadopites subassemblage, the Cyathidites–Cycadopites–Psophosphaera subassemblage, and the Cyathidites–Deltoidospora–Osmundacidites subassemblage. We applied the Sporomorph EcoGroup (SEG) model to interpret the paleoclimate features. The sporopollen fossils indicate that the Santanghu Basin underwent a shift in vegetation types, from ground cover vegetation as the dominant form to canopy trees and then back to ground cover vegetation as the primary vegetation during the Aalenian–Bajocian. The SEG model analysis demonstrates that the CCP subassemblage is characterized by a low lowland SEG/upland SEG ratio, low wetter/drier ratio within the lowland SEG, and a low warmer/cooler ratio within the lowland SEG. Human and animal presence in natural landscapes is initially revealed by the immediate impact of their locomotion, from footprints to crushed grass. In this work, we present an approach to model the effects of virtual characters on natural terrains, focusing on the impact of human locomotion. We introduce a lightweight solution to compute accurate foot placement on uneven ground and infer dynamic foot pressure from kinematic animation data and the mass of the character. A ground and vegetation model enables us to effectively simulate the local impact of locomotion on soft soils and plants over time, resulting in the formation of visible paths. As our results show, we can parameterize various soil materials and vegetation types validated with real-world data. Semiarid Patagonia represents 25% of the rangeland area in Argentina, and sheep overgrazing has degraded about a third of it in the past. In this century, depleted domestic stocks have mostly stabilized, but Guanaco populations have grown. These native camelids share habitat and diets with sheep, but their effect on vegetation is poorly understood and has long been debated. We set up an exclusion experiment in Monte León and Cañadón Vaca, a semiarid shrubland grassland in southern Patagonia, currently grazed only by guanacos. Vegetation baselines were studied in 2016 in twelve plots, and half of them were protected from guanaco grazing. Thirty-six plots were cleared to study revegetation. Vegetation was reassessed in 2021, and changes were evaluated using a paired t -test. Within protected plots, vegetation cover increased, bare soil diminished, and vegetated patches grew in size, but the density of the patch-interpatch arrangement did not change. Biodiversity, measured by richness and the Shannon-Wiener (SW) index, grew significantly. Nutrient recycling increased, as did the Stability and Infiltration Land Function indexes, although these last differences were not significant. Vegetation cover under guanaco grazing also increased, mainly due to the growth of dwarf shrubs, a typical tendency in sheep grazing-induced transitions in the region. Vegetated patches under grazing fragmented, resulting in smaller patches and denser patch structures, while diversity and land function indexes remained unchanged. Young plants established in cleared plots without guanacos showed higher cover density and individual size. These effects are similar to those observed in numerous experimental sheep exclosures. Guanaco grazing may thus prevent restoration and contribute to the generalized land degradation processes that overgrazing has been causing in Patagonia for over a century. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The emerging alien cactus Cylindropuntia pallida (Rose) F.M. Knuth originates from northern Mexico and introduced into South Africa in 1940s as an ornamental plant. Multiple populations of C. pallida have been detected in various areas of South Africa. C. pallida has effective propagule dispersal and rapid recruitment making it a likely key future invader, and thus, is a target for eradication in South Africa. To eradicate C. pallida populations, a foliar spray (i.e. using a 2% concentration of herbicide with fluroxypyr and triclopyr) has been applied to plants in nine populations, with population sizes ranging between 535 and 2701 plants and populations covering areas of 100 –1000 ha. The aims of the study were to investigate the efficacy of the foliar spray method used to eradicate C. pallida; to investigate the impacts of C. pallida invasions on native vegetation integrity; to apply species distribution models (SDMs) to identify suitable climates for C. pallida in South Africa; and to document the biomes vulnerable to the negative impact of C. pallida in South Africa. Results show that foliar spray killed many C. pallida plants (mean percentage of dead plants ± SE, 83.3 ± 6.4; n = 9; range, 70–96%), with adult plants taking about 2 months to die completely. The efficacy of the herbicide was not affected by plant size or the concentration of the herbicide used. The invaded site had significantly greater vegetation cover which persisted across winter compared to the uninvaded site, but the latter site's vegetation cover significantly dropped in winter. Also, the invaded site had lower plant species diversity than the uninvaded site and was dominated by species in the Poaceae and Asteraceae plant families. Additionally, a normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) analysis shows that the uninvaded site has higher vegetation cover and health than the invaded site wherein a notable decline in vegetation health was observed between 2019 and 2022. A large area (> 15 million hectares) was predicted to be suitable for invasion by C. pallida in provinces with arid and warm temperate climates - the fynbos and grassland biomes are the most vulnerable. Because of the observed negative impacts, high environmental compatibility, and high cost of clearing large infestations, we advocate for considering the biocontrol method for effectively managing C. pallida invasion in South Africa. Understanding the vegetation dynamics and their drivers in Nepal has significant scientific reference value for implementing sustainable ecological policies. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the spatio-temporal variations in vegetation cover in Nepal from 2003 to 2022 using MODIS NDVI data and explores the effects of climatic factors and anthropogenic activities on vegetation. Mann–Kendall test was used to assess the significant trend in NDVI and was integrated with the Hurst exponent to predict future trends. The driving factors of NDVI dynamics were analyzed using Pearson's correlation, partial derivative, and residual analysis methods. The results indicate that over the last 20 years, Nepal has experienced an increasing trend in NDVI at 0.0013 year−1, with 80% of the surface area (vegetation cover) showing an increasing vegetation trend (~ 28% with a significant increase in vegetation). Temperature influenced vegetation dynamics in the higher elevation areas, while precipitation and human interventions influenced the lower elevation areas. The Hurst exponent analysis predicts an improvement in the vegetation cover (greening) for a larger area compared to vegetation degradation (browning). A significantly increased area of NDVI residuals indicates a positive anthropogenic influence on vegetation cover. Anthropogenic activities have a higher relative contribution to NDVI variation followed by temperature and then precipitation. The results of residual trend and Hurst analysis in different regions of Nepal help identify degraded areas, both in the present and future. In the Mexican Caribbean, environmental changes, hydrometeorological events, and anthropogenic activities promote dynamism in the coastal vegetation cover associated with the dune; however, their pace and magnitude remain uncertain. Using Landsat 7 imagery, spatial and temporal changes in coastal dune vegetation were estimated for the 2011–2020 period in the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve. The SAVI index revealed cover changes at different magnitudes and paces at the biannual, seasonal, and monthly timeframes. Climatic seasons had a significant influence on vegetation cover, with increases in cover during northerlies (SAVI: p = 0.000), while the topographic profile of the dune was relevant for structure. Distance-based multiple regressions and redundancy analysis showed that temperature had a significant effect (p < 0.05) on SAVI patterns, whereas precipitation showed little influence (p > 0.05). The Mann–Kendall tendency test indicated high dynamism in vegetation loss and recovery with no defined patterns, mostly associated with anthropogenic disturbance. High-density vegetation such as mangroves, palm trees, and shrubs was the most drastically affected, although a reduction in bare soil was also recorded. This study demonstrated that hydrometeorological events and climate variability in the long term have little influence on vegetation dynamism. Lastly, it was observed that anthropogenic activities promoted vegetation loss and transitions; however, the latter were also linked to recoveries in areas with pristine environments, relevant for tourism. This study analyzes the impact of containment due to the COVID-19 pandemic on the vegetation cover of the Korifla sub-watershed, based on remote sensing data and spatial analysis. The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of the containment imposed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic on the vegetation cover and to highlight significant changes in the distribution of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) before and after the containment period, as well as to identify the areas most affected by these changes. The results highlight significant fluctuations in the distribution of vegetation cover, including a decrease in water area and variations in the categories of bare soil, sparse, medium-dense and dense vegetation. Using NDVI as an indicator of vegetation health, changes before and after the confinement period were highlighted. These results highlight the impact of anthropogenic disturbances such as confinement on plant ecosystems, and underline the importance of continuously monitoring vegetation cover for sustainable natural resource management and biodiversity preservation. With climatic conditions in Morocco stagnating in the two years following containment, the climatic factor is now set aside, and the focus shifts to the impact of reduced human activity. In the context of ongoing global changes, long-term demographic monitoring data is crucial to assess the viability of natural populations. Such data is particularly important when large fluctuations in population size obfuscate background demographic trajectories. Here, we report results from the first 5 years of a long-term monitoring of a moonwort (Botrychium, Ophioglossaceae) community in Bic National Park, eastern Canada. Our objectives were to provide a first estimate of the composition, size, and demography of the moonwort colonies and to evaluate the putative influence of meteorological and microenvironmental variables on the density of aboveground sporophytes and sporophyte trait variability. Individuals were identified to the species level and tallied in each colony (n = 16 colonies) for the first 3 years (2019–2021) and then marked, monitored, and measured in permanent sample plots (n = 27 plots) for the last 3 years (2021–2023). Although colonies did not vary in composition (n = 8 Botrychium species), the number of emerged individuals differed yearly. Moonwort abundance, re-emergence, and trophophore height were associated with rainfall during the period of sporophyte emergence. Post-drought recovery occurred readily, which might reflect rapid recruitment or dormancy in Botrychium. Moonwort abundance declined as shrub cover and herbaceous vegetation height increased whereas trophophore size was smaller under closed tree canopy. Our results suggest spring rainfall as the limiting factor in opened habitats, whereas competition for sunlight may be limiting under closed canopy. The objective of this research was to assess the feasibility of remote sensing (RS) technology, specifically an unmanned aerial system (UAS), to estimate Bambara groundnut canopy state variables including leaf area index (LAI), canopy chlorophyll content (CCC), aboveground biomass (AGB), and fractional vegetation cover (FVC). RS and ground data were acquired during Malaysia's 2018/2019 Bambara groundnut growing season at six phenological stages; vegetative, flowering, podding, podfilling, maturity, and senescence. Five vegetation indices (VIs) were determined from the RS data, resulting in single-stage VIs and cumulative VIs (∑VIs). Pearson's correlation was used to investigate the relationship between canopy state variables and single stage VIs and ∑VIs over several stages. Linear parametric and non-linear non-parametric machine learning (ML) regressions including CatBoost Regressor (CBR), Random Forest Regressor (RFR), AdaBoost Regressor (ABR), Huber Regressor (HR), Multiple Linear Regressor (MLR), Theil-Sen Regressor (TSR), Partial Least Squares Regressor (PLSR), and Ridge Regressor (RR) were used to estimate canopy state variables using VIs/∑VIs as input. The best single-stage correlations between canopy state variables and VIs were observed at flowering (r > 0.50 in most cases). Moreover, ∑VIs acquired from vegetative to senescence stage had the strongest correlation with all measured canopy state variables (r > 0.70 in most cases). In estimating AGB, MLR achieved the best testing performance (R2 = 0.77, RMSE = 0.30). For CCC, RFR excelled with R2 of 0.85 and RMSE of 2.88. Most models performed well in FVC estimation with testing R2 of 0.98–0.99 and low RMSE. For LAI, MLR stood out in testing with R2 of 0.74, and RMSE of 0.63. Use of waste wood biomass for bioenergy produces wood ash as a by-product; this ash is typically landfilled, but can potentially play an important role in soil improvement and forest restoration. In particular, high-carbon wood ash biochar (HCWAB) could supply nutrients, improve substrate water-holding capacity and pH, and emulate the ecosystem benefits of wildfire residues. Thickened tailings sites at metal mines across Canada are subject to stringent restoration regulations that entail planting of native trees to promote rapid reforestation. While HCWAB may prove beneficial in this context, field trials have been very limited to date. We conducted a large-scale, replicated field trial on sand-capped tailings at an operational gold mine in the Canadian boreal forest to assess the impact of HCWAB (at dosages of 0, 6.4, 12.8, and 19.1 t/ha) on survival and growth of four native tree species, as well as substrate chemical properties and element uptake in tree tissues. After 2 years, the survival of planted, native trees was highest at low to moderate application rates; HCWAB dosages above 13 t/ha presented reduced tree survival to levels comparable to unamended substrates. Tree growth was higher across all HCWAB doses relative to growth in samples planted on untreated substrates; tree species and initial size also had large impacts on final tree survival and aboveground growth. The survival of Betula papyrifera was significantly higher than other species, while smaller transplanted trees in general survived in greater numbers compared to larger size classes. Volunteer herbaceous vegetation significantly increased at the higher HCWAB application dosages and tree performance was negatively correlated with vegetation cover, consistent with a resource competition effect. HCWAB additions to sand-capped mine tailings did not significantly alter tree tissue concentrations or substrate availability of potentially toxic metals (Cd, Cu, Al). We conclude that low to moderate dosages of HCWAB on sand-capped tailings, particularly between 6.4 and 12.8 t/ha, may offer benefits to early tree survival, growth, and substrate nutrient status without causing significant risks of phytotoxicity and recommend future field trials focus on strategies to reduce tree competition with competing vegetation. Climate change has resulted in more frequent occurrences of extreme events, such as flooding and heavy snowfall, which can have a significant impact on densely populated or industrialised areas. Numerical models are used to simulate and predict these extreme events, enabling informed decision-making and planning to minimise human casualties and to protect costly infrastructure. LISFLOOD is an integrated hydrological model underpinning the European Flood Awareness System and Global Flood Awareness System (EFAS and GloFAS, respectively), developed by the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS). The CEMS_SurfaceFields_2022 dataset is a new set of high-resolution surface fields at 1 and 3 arcmin resolution (approximately 2 and 6 km at the Equator, respectively) based on a wide variety of high-resolution and up-to-date data sources. The 1 arcmin fields cover Europe, while the surface fields at 3 arcmin cover the global land surface (excluding Antarctica). The dataset encompasses (i) catchment morphology and river networks, (ii) land use, (iii) vegetation cover type and properties, (iv) soil properties, (v) lake information, and (vi) water demand. This paper details the complete workflow used to generate the CEMS_SurfaceFields_2022 fields, including the data sources and methodology. Whilst created together with upgrades to the open source LISFLOOD code, the CEMS_SurfaceFields_2022 fields can be used independently for a wide range of applications, including as input to hydrological, Earth system, or environmental models or for carrying out general analyses across spatial scales, ranging from global and regional levels to local levels (especially useful for regions outside Europe), expected to improve the accuracy, detail and realism of applications. [Objective] The aims of this study are to explore the spatial and temporal evolution patterns of vegetation cover in the urban agglomeration of southern Sichuan, to analyze its driving mechanism, and to provide reference and decision-making basis for promoting ecological environmental protection and sustainable socioeconomic development in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. [Methods] The vegetation cover was taken as the research object. The coefficient of variation and linear regression research methods were used to analyze the spatial and temporal evolution characteristics of the vegetation change in the urban agglomeration of south Sichuan from 2001 to 2021, and the geographic detector model was used to explore the influencing factors. [Results] (1) The overall condition of vegetation cover in the south Sichuan urban agglomeration was good, and the proportion of areas with vegetation cover of 0.4 or more was 71.74%. The change of vegetation cover was dominated by low fluctuation, accounting for 78.16%. The trend of vegetation degradation was significant, accounting for 8.89%. (2) The degree of influence of each driving factor on vegetation cover was ranked in descending order: elevation> land use type average annual temperature> slope population density > GDP > urbanization rate average annual evaporation average annual precipitation aspect. Among them, the explanatory power q-values of the first six factors were all greater than 16%, which were the main driving factors affecting the change of vegetation cover. (3) Any two-factor interactions were dominated by two-factor enhancement and nonlinear enhancement, in which the q value of the interaction between elevation and land use type was the largest, 0.369. (4) When the elevation was 1 200 to 1 400 m, the mean annual temperature was 12.15 to 15.16 °C, the slopes were 32° to 35°, the population density was less than 22.31 people/km², the GDP was 122 to 1 221 yuan/km2 and when the land use type was woodland, the vegetation was most suitable. [Conclusion] The overall condition of vegetation cover in the south Sichuan urban agglomeration from 2001 to 2021 was good, and topography, meteorological conditions and socioeconomic factors all had a significant impact on regional vegetation changes. [Objective] The primary objective of this study is to investigate the spatiotemporal variations in net primary productivity (NPP) of vegetation within Qinghai Lake Basin from 2000 to 2020. Additionally, it aims to reveal the key factors and their contributive drivers of changes in vegetation NPP. The research is designed to provide a baseline scientific investigation on the dynamics of NPP within Qinghai Lake Basin. [Methods] We used data on vegetation NPP, temperature, precipitation, fractional vegetation cover, and human activity intensity in Qinghai Lake Basin from 2000 to 2020 to analyze the spatiotemporal changes of vegetation NPP across sub-basins, elevations, and micro-terrain in Qinghai Lake Basin. We applied spatial analysis using ArcGIS and the geographic detector model to conduct these analyses. Furthermore, we also investigated the correlations of vegetation NPP with temperature, precipitation, and fractional vegetation cover, as well as the driving factors of vegetation NPP. [Results] (1) In the past 21 years, the annual vegetation NPP in the Qinghai Lake Basin exhibited a fluctuating increase across temporal scales, with a growth rate of 2.22 g C·m²/a, and a spatially increasing trend from northwest to southeast. (2) The study also revealed spatially significant correlations between annual vegetation NPP and mean annual temperature, annual precipitation, and annual fractional vegetation cover, with ratios of 40%, 9%, and 59%, respectively. The primary partial correlation coefficients between mean annual temperature and annual precipitation with annual vegetation NPP encompassed 59.26% and 33.39% of the basin area. (3) The results of our study also revealed that temperature (q=0.58), elevation (q=0.54), and human activity intensity (q=0.38) were principal drivers of basin-scale NPP. Additionally, the interactive impact of these factors was found to better explain these drives than any single factor. [Conclusion] The NPP of vegetation in Qinghai Lake Basin increased over temporal scales from 2000 to 2020. Our study showed spatially significant differences in NPP across elevation, sub-watersheds, and microtopographic patterns. The Caledonian pinewoods of northern Scotland represent the remnants of once extensive forests found at the western edge of the natural range of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.). The surviving pinewoods are of international significance and are of high conservation and cultural value. However, for many decades, there has been concern about their long-term future because of a lack of regenerating seedlings and young trees. This problem is thought to be driven by high deer populations resulting in intensive browsing and severe damage to young trees, as well as a lack of favourable micro-sites for seedling germination. An experiment was established on the Mar Lodge estate in 2007–08 adjacent to native pinewood stands to test the effects of protection and site cultivation upon seedling numbers and growth. The experiment was located within a regeneration zone where intensive deer control had reduced numbers to <5 animals km−2. Ten years after initiation, occurrence and numbers of both Scots pine and birch seedlings were substantially increased in cultivated treatments compared with uncultivated controls. There were no effects of protection upon seedling numbers. Protection improved height growth of Scots pine, but not of birch. Cultivation had no effect upon the growth of pine seedlings but did influence the height of birch seedlings due to the rapid growth of some pre-existing seedlings in the uncultivated control. Vegetation cover had increased from ~60%to at least 80% cover 6 years after cultivation. The results suggest that site cultivation may be desirable to boost seedling germination within a Caledonian pinewood, but sustained measures to control browsing pressure are a prerequisite for satisfactory establishment of these seedlings. The Bench-Sheko zone, parts of the Eastern Afromontane Biodiversity Hotspot, is characterized by its rich biodiversity. However, recent reductions in vegetation cover have drawn concern, highlighting the critical role of remote sensing in monitoring these alterations is critical. Furthermore, this study evaluates the economic value of the ecosystem services rendered by the diverse types of vegetation cover class in the area. The classification of vegetation types and measuring their ecosystem benefits are crucial for monitoring vegetation and analyzing land cover changes. estimating the value of ecosystem services is vital for environmental impact assessments, cost-benefit analyses, and creating payment schemes for these natural services. For the vegetation cover map, it uses Sentinel-2 satellite data and a Random Forest classifier using Google Earth Engine. Based on a properly chosen reference, ecosystem service assessment approaches include benefit transfer, direct market value, and the social cost of carbon. The results highlight the vegetation classes' enormous value and the services they offer. The largest value for Supporting Services (2829.3 USD ha⁻1yr⁻1) is found in the Remnant Forest, which makes up 30.98% of the total area. With the highest value for both cultural services (2847.7 USD ha⁻1yr⁻1) and regulatory services (5063.9 USD ha⁻1yr⁻1), the wetlands, which make up 4.35% of the total area, stand out. The total annual value of all ecosystem services provided by all vegetation classes is estimated to be 2.089 billion USD. When paired with methods for tracking and assessing changes in vegetation cover over time, high-resolution satellite images and precise classification algorithms can offer insightful information on the condition of the environment and support informed decision-making. As a result of the advocacy of Indigenous communities and increasing evidence of the ecological importance of fire, California has invested in the restoration of intentional burning (the practice of deliberately lighting low-severity fires) in an effort to reduce the occurrence and severity of wildfires. Recognizing the growing need to monitor the impacts of these smaller, low-severity fires, we leveraged Sentinel-2 imagery to reveal important inter- and intra-annual variation in grasslands before and after fires. Specifically, we explored three methodological approaches: (1) the complete time series of the normalized burn ratio (NBR), (2) annual summary metrics (mean, fifth percentile, and amplitude of NBR), and (3) maps depicting spatial patterns in these annual NBR metrics before and after fire. We also used a classification of pre-fire vegetation to stratify these analyses by three dominant vegetation cover types (grasses, shrubs, and trees). We applied these methods to a unique study area in which three adjacent grasslands had diverging fire histories and showed how grassland recovery from a low-severity intentional burn and a high-severity wildfire differed both from each other and from a reference site with no recent fire. On the low-severity intentional burn site, our results showed that the annual NBR metrics recovered to pre-fire values within one year, and that regular intentional burning on the site was promoting greater annual growth of both grass and shrub species, even in the third growing season following a burn. In the case of the high-severity wildfire, our metrics indicated that this grassland had not returned to its pre-fire phenological signals in at least three years after the fire, indicating that it may be undergoing a longer recovery or an ecological shift. These proposed methods address a growing need to study the effects of small, intentional burns in low-biomass ecosystems such as grasslands, which are an essential part of mitigating wildfires. The interplay of positive and negative species interactions controls species assembly in communities. Dryland plant communities, such as savannas, are important to global biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Sandhill oaks in xeric savannas of the southeastern United States can facilitate longleaf pine by enhancing seedling survival, but the effects of oaks on recruitment and growth of longleaf pine have not been examined. We censused, mapped, and monitored nine contiguous hectares of longleaf pine in a xeric savanna to quantify oak-pine facilitation, and to examine other factors impacting recruitment, such as vegetation cover and longleaf pine tree density. We found that newly recruited seedlings and grass stage longleaf pines were more abundant in oak-dominated areas where densities were 230% (newly recruited seedlings) and 360% (grass stage) greater from lowest to highest oak neighborhood densities. Longleaf pine also grew faster under higher oak density. Longleaf pine recruitment was lowest under longleaf pine canopies. Mortality of grass stage and bolt stage longleaf pine was low (~1.0% yr−1) in the census interval without fire. Overall, our findings highlight the complex interactions between pines and oaks—two economically and ecologically important genera globally. The necessity for precise and current data concerning the dynamics of land cover change in Indonesia is crucial for efforts to reduce natural vegetation cover due to agricultural expansion. The functionality of monitoring systems that incorporate Terra-MODIS is currently compromised by the limited availability of data for the immediate future. This study seeks to assess the potential of VIIRS satellite imagery in developing an early warning system for monitoring vegetation cover change in Indonesia. The normalized differential open-area index (NDOAI) computed from 8-day VIIRS data was employed to detect changes in vegetation cover based on pixel-by-pixel subtraction in the NDOAI data time series. Evaluating the pixel-level accuracy of change detection is complicated due to the fact that we evaluate a change map at a coarser resolution than the Landsat-based reference map. The results revealed that increasing the threshold percentage is associated with improved accuracy. In change detection, there is often a trade-off between accuracy and sensitivity. A threshold that is too low may result in false positives, while a threshold that is too high may lead to missed changes. This study demonstrates that when a threshold value of less than 20% is applied, Landsat can identify vegetation cover changes at an earlier stage. Conversely, when a threshold value greater than 20% is employed, the VIIRS will detect the change 4.5 days earlier than Landsat. Additionally, the VIIRS is capable of detecting changes 25.4 days and 54.8 days faster than Landsat, respectively, when using thresholds of 40% and 70%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is limited information regarding the influence of mangrove growth on the morphological evolution of intertidal mudflats. In this study, Tan Phu Dong district, Tien Giang Province, Vietnam, was selected for investigating how mangrove growth influenced the morphological evolution of an intertidal mudflat. The authors analyzed a series of satellite images (from 1995 and 2022), calculated the enhanced vegetation index (EVI), and documented field visits and observations in pursuit of the objective of the study. The findings revealed that fine-grained sediment accumulated as unconsolidated substratum (US) in the first step of the morphological evolution of the intertidal mudflat, with sediment accumulation of 910 ha in 1995. The US provided favorable conditions for mangroves to grow, while mangrove growth helped compact the US into a compact substratum (CS) in addition to promoting continuous sediment accumulation, increased the vegetation cover of the island, and elevated the substrate density of the remaining areas. As a result, the US and CS decreased steadily between 1995 and 2020, from 910 ha in 1995 to 401 ha in 2020 and from 433 ha in 2005 to 111 ha in 2020, respectively. Meanwhile, the low-vegetation area (LVA), medium-vegetation area (MVA), and high vegetation area (HVA) gradually increased between 1995 and 2015, from 0 ha in 1995 to 104 ha in 2015, from 0 ha in 1995 to 96 ha in 2015, and from 0 ha in 1995 to 114 ha in 2015, respectively. However, the LVA decreased slightly between 2015 and 2020 due to significant sand accumulation, which significantly killed the mangrove trees. In contrast, the MVA and HVA steadily increased between 2015 and 2020, from 96 ha in 2015 to 116 ha in 2020 and from 114 ha in 2015 to 221 ha in 2020, respectively. In 2022, there was a steady increase in HVA (298 ha in 2022), although the date of the 2022 satellite retrieval was 28 January 2022. This study recommends that the technical design of the existing coastal protection works should be revised or adapted to take account of sediment accumulation as the first step in the morphological evolution of the examined intertidal mudflat, rather than mangrove growth.
