Abstract

Global quantum networks for secure communication can be realised using large fleets of satellites distributing entangled photon-pairs between ground-based nodes. Because the cost of a satellite depends on its size, the smallest satellites will be most cost-effective. This paper describes a miniaturised, polarization entangled, photon-pair source operating on board a nano-satellite. The source violates Bell's inequality with a CHSH parameter of 2.6 $\pm$ 0.06. This source can be combined with optical link technologies to enable future quantum communication nano-satellite missions., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

This paper presents the thermo-mechanical design of the quantum light source on board SpooQy-1, a 3U CubeSat that was deployed from the International Space Station on 17th June 2019. SpooQy-1 is a technology demonstrator for space-based quantum networks. The on-board light source generates and detects polarization-entangled photon pairs to validate its in-orbit performance. Entangled photons are generated using spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) necessitating stringent dimensional stability and temperature requirements. Under laboratory conditions these requirements are routinely met using off-the-shelf laboratory mounts and alignment mechanisms. However, when facing harsh environments such as the vibration during rocket launch or temperature changes due to fluctuating illumination conditions, custom thermo-mechanical solutions are required. In this work, the development and in-orbit demonstration of an isostatic payload mount is discussed. This mounting approach enables future space missions with quantum instruments on resource-constrained CubeSat platforms with limited thermal control capabilities., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

We report on our progress developing highly-miniaturised, polarisation-entangled, photon pair sources for CubeSats. We have a correlated photon-pair source in orbit in the NUS Galassia 2U CubeSat. We also have an entangled photon pair source in production and a high brightness (1Mcps) entangled photon-pair source in development for our upcoming satellite missions. All our sources are proof-of-principle demonstrations that the hardware necessary for entanglement-based QKD can be miniaturised and made sufficiently robust for operation in nano-satellites. The photon pairs they produce are measured with liquid crystal-based Bell state analysers and Geiger-mode avalanche photo-diodes within the source. These space missions allow our on-the-ground radiation, thermal and vibration tests to be validated and the real-world operation and aging of the source in space to be studied. A BBM92 QKD-capable design of the source has been used in a phase A study of a satellite-to-satellite QKD demonstration mission by the University of New South Wales, Canberra. Abstract

The Australian Space Eye is a proposed astronomical telescope based on a 6U CubeSat platform. The Space Eye will exploit the low level of systematic errors achievable with a small space based telescope to enable high accuracy measurements of the optical extragalactic background light and low surface brightness emission around nearby galaxies. This project is also a demonstrator for several technologies with general applicability to astronomical observations from nanosatellites. Space Eye is based around a 90 mm aperture clear aperture all refractive telescope for broadband wide field imaging in the i and z bands., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures, submitted for publication as Proc. Abstract

SpooQy-1 is a 3-unit nanosatellite that was launched into a Low Earth Orbit from the International Space Station on the 17th of June 2019. The spacecraft hosts a scientific payload capable of producing entangled photon-pairs and measuring their polarization in orthogonal bases to perform a Bell test. Since launch, SpooQy-1 has routinely demonstrated the generation and detection of polarization entangled photon-pairs in Space, something that has previously only been demonstrated by the 630kg Micius mission by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The measured entanglement correlations can violate Bell's inequality with a CHSH parameter value of 2.60±0.06, over operating temperatures of 16 °C to 21.5 °C. These results demonstrate that quantum entanglement can be generated in space on highly resource-constrained platforms. A follow-on 12U mission, developed in partnership with RAL space,will build on this to demonstrate space-to-ground entanglement distribution, which is required for space-based nodes to support global quantum communication networks.

Abstract

Due-diligence investigation should always be conducted by banks when lending because this approach minimizes their risks when making deals with other parties. Customer background investigation can be performed by either lenders themselves, in-house investigators or third-party private contractors. Do-it-yourself investigations is useful because lenders usually are familiar with the new customers. However, marketing and customer service is sacrificed because background investigation takes time. On the other hand, hiring in-house investigators lowers investigation cost, improves information gathering and minimizes time required. Unfortunately, these investigators have a tendency to be insensitive to the bankers' needs. Finally, contractors can gather information through cost-effective and time-effective manner. Unfortunately, only a few contractors have proven track records.

Abstract

The Spectral and Photometric Imaging REceiver (SPIRE) is one of the three scientific instruments on the European Space Agency's Herschel mission. At the start of 2004 the Cryogenic Qualification Model (CQM) of SPIRE was tested with the aim of verifying the instrument system design and evaluating key performance parameters. We present a description of the test facility, an overview of the instrument tests carried out on the CQM, and the first results from the analysis of the test data. Instrument optical efficiency and detector noise levels are close to the values expected from unit-level tests, and the SPIRE instrument system works well, with no degradation in performance from stray light, electromagnetic interference or microphonically induced noise. Some anomalies and imperfections in the instrument performance, test set-up, and test procedures have been identified and will be addressed in the next test campaign.

Abstract

In the fall of 1975, TRADOC directed that a test be conducted to determine the viability of a 12/15 week OSUT concept. Six military occupational specialties (MOS's) were identified for testing: MOS's 11D and 11E at Fort Knox, Kentucky; MOS 12B at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri; MOS 13B at Fort Sill, Oklahoma; MOS 16P at Fort Bliss, Texas; and MOS 36C at Fort Gordon, Georgia. In each case a special OSUT program was designed to produce an initial entry soldier capable of performing a minimal set of critical tasks that were provided by TRADOC. The Fort Bliss OSUT program was unique in that the OSUT cycle ran for 15 weeks rather than the 12 or 13 weeks employed at the other posts.
