Coextinction is a major and growing threat to global biodiversity. One of the affected groups is the eriophyoid mites (Prostigmata: Eriophyoidea) which are highly host plant specific. They have been described from an enormous range of annual and perennial plants from grasses to giant forest trees. It is highly likely that there are huge numbers of undescribed eriophyoid species in the subtropical and tropical regions which harbor an extraordinary wealth of plant diversity. The global total of eriophyoid species is estimated to be at least 250,000 but it could be much higher. However, the continuing destruction and degradation of natural habitat, especially tropical forests, and climate change, together pose extreme, on-going threats to the eriophyoid mites because of their vulnerability to co-extinction with their host plants. It has been reported that one third of all the Earth’s plant species are now at risk of extinction. Together with enormous numbers of other invertebrate species, it is highly likely that many thousands of eriophyoid species are disappearing in the current mass extinction event. Population decline and co-extinction, especially of the invertebrates, are greatly accelerating total biodiversity losses. The termination of habitat destruction and degradation; establishment of large, representative protected areas; restoration of degraded areas; and rapid reduction of fossil fuel use, are urgent tasks. However, the long term conservation of biodiversity can only be achieved through comprehensive social, economic and political reforms across the world that prioritize environmental protection, peaceful coexistence, social justice and the sustainable use of resources.

Background: The emergence of coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, and the subsequent global epidemic of COVID-19, brought with it innumerable new clinical experiences across all medical specialties, and psychiatry is no exception. Individuals with serious mental illness, in particular schizophrenia and related disorders, may be especially susceptible to coronavirus infection given the overlapping risk factors of vulnerable sociodemographic status, increased challenges with quarantining requirements, and limited compliance with “respiratory etiquette.” The case presented here describes a patient with schizophrenia who was being managed on clozapine and who developed symptomatic COVID-19 infection. Special care was taken to ensure that potential interactions between clozapine and the associated COVID-19 treatments were safe for the patient’s mental and physical wellbeing. Case Presentation: A 71-year-old schizophrenic Caucasian male is being managed with clozapine. While hospitalized, the patient was screened positive for COVID-19 and was admitted to the ICU due to his declining respiratory status. He was treated with both remdesivir and prednisone. He was able to fully recover from his COVID-19 infection. Conclusion: The authors review the clinical characteristics of the case, highlighting both the overlapping synergistic effects and antagonistic influences of clozapine therapy in combination with COVID-19 and its associated treatments. A review of the literature offers an opportunity to examine various frameworks for individualized clinical decision-making while making the case for greater epidemiologic research into the optimal management of individuals with a psychotic disorder who are diagnosed with COVID-19 infection.

Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) is a disorder of visual hallucinations in psychologically normal patients with ocular disease or damage to visual pathways. The etiology of CBS is not fully understood. It is associated with various triggers, with age-related macular degeneration the most common; other triggers are systemic diseases such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, and anemia as well as lighting issues, fatigue, and medical or surgical eye treatments. Visual disturbances such as decreased visual acuity, visual field deficits, or visual hallucinations are common in association with hypertensive encephalopathy. We describe a patient with episodic CBS triggered by recurrent hypertensive crises, which resolved with blood pressure management in the hospital setting.

Since the 1970’s, biodiversity, conservation and ecology journals have published increasing numbers of reports of major, widespread losses of the diversity and abundance of plants, vertebrates and invertebrates, mostly insects, especially in tropical regions. Mites make a major contribution to global ecosystem services and ecological functioning. Reports on diversity and abundance losses among mites, including ticks, have appeared more recently. The huge problems of population decline and direct extinction among free-living invertebrate species across the world are compounded by the host dependency of enormous numbers of other invertebrate species, which puts them at serious risk of secondary endangerment and co-extinction. They include huge numbers of mite species in symbiotic relationships, including phoretic and parasitic relationships, and the highly host-specific, phytophagous eriophyoids. The destruction and degradation of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and habitats across the world, especially for agricultural expansion and intensification, are the major causes of biodiversity loss, with climate change, pollution, overexploitation, invasive species and pesticide use among other contributors. Measures and activities that would substantially contribute to saving the great majority of the world’s remaining biodiversity include the protection of all remaining areas of natural and semi-natural habitat, especially the subtropical and tropical forests, with the 36 global biodiversity hotspots an absolute priority; habitat restoration with local species; higher global soil carbon levels; rapid transition from fossil fuel use to renewable energy sources to stop climate change; minimization of pollution; universal education and social justice; a lower human population; and sustainable use of global resources. The rapid implementation of these and other practical measures at the local, national and global scales is essential to ensure the long term survival of the vast majority of biodiversity, including mite species.

The most serious environmental challenge facing humanity is the massive, widespread and continuing loss of biodiversity due to human activities. The commonly reported root causes of the decline and extinction of species are the degradation, destruction and fragmentation of habitat; pollution; pesticide use; invasive species; climate change; and over-exploitation; with co-extinction cascades accelerating the losses. The current alarming rate of loss of species across the biodiversity spectrum has ecological, economic, social, aesthetic, cultural and spiritual impacts that directly undermine the welfare of all humanity. This unprecedented crisis demands an urgent, science-based, comprehensive, coordinated, global response. Among the organizations responding to the multifaceted challenge of biodiversity loss is the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Its enormous pool of integrated expertise, technical capacity and policy experience makes the IUCN the global authority on the status of nature and the suite of measures needed to protect it. The largest of the IUCN’s six commissions is the Species Survival Commission, a science-based network of over 160 Specialist Groups, including 17 invertebrate groups; Red List Authorities; and Task Forces. Despite there being an estimated 500,000 – 1,500,000 mite species, and their ubiquity in global ecosystems and fundamental role in many ecological processes, mites have received minimal attention on the global conservation agenda. The role of the newly formed Mite Specialist Group, which gained official status in April 2021, is to redress that situation. The mission of the group, which currently includes 65 mite specialists, ecologists, botanists, environmentalists and conservation practitioners from 36 countries on five continents, is to contribute to a collaborative global effort to conserve mite diversity through research, education, advocacy, community engagement and specific conservation initiatives.

It has been argued that unipolar major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD) exist on a continuous spectrum, given their overlapping symptomatology and genetic diatheses. The Bipolarity Index (BI) is a scale that considers bipolarity as a continuous construct and was developed to assess confidence in bipolar diagnosis. Here we investigated whether BI scores correlate with gray matter volume (GMV) in a sample of unmedicated unipolar and bipolar depressed individuals.158 subjects (139 with MDD, 19 with BD) in a major depressive episode at time of scan were assigned BI scores. T1-weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging scans were obtained and processed with Voxel-Based Morphometry using SPM12 (CAT12 toolbox) to assess GMV. Regression was performed at the voxel level to identify clusters of voxels whose GMV was associated with BI score, (p0.001, family-wise error-corrected cluster-level p0.05), with age, sex and total intracranial volume as covariates.GMV was inversely correlated with BI score in four clusters located in left lateral occipital cortex, bilateral angular gyri and right frontal pole. Clusters were no longer significant after controlling for diagnosis. GMV was not correlated with BI score within the MDD cohort alone.Incomplete clinical data required use of a modified BI scale.BI scores were inversely correlated with GMV in unmedicated subjects with MDD and BD, but these correlations appeared driven by categorical diagnosis. Future work will examine other imaging modalities and focus on elements of the BI scale most likely to be related to brain structure and function.

This paper, which addresses the issue of the extinction of mite species at the global scale for the first time, highlights mite diversity, assesses the evidence for an extinction process, discusses contributing factors and estimates losses. The ~1 250 000 mite species occupy an enormous variety of terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems from the equator to the polar regions and to high altitudes. Some groups provide essential ecosystem services, including the incorporation of organic matter into the soil. The maintenance of mite diversity is inextricably linked to the continuance of floristic diversity, habitat complexity and insect diversity. The majority of mite species are assumed to be in the tropical rainforests, of which >50% has been destroyed or severely degraded. Most biodiversity hotspots are in tropical forests; endemic phytoseiid mite species are at least 17 times more concentrated in the hotspots than outside. Habitat destruction and degradation continue on an enormous scale, with increasing human population growth and resource consumption the overarching drivers of extinction. Moreover, climate change is likely to be worsening the effects of the other drivers at an increasing rate. The small body of direct evidence and a considerable body of indirect evidence strongly suggest the continuing, widespread extinction of mite species. Based on estimates of overall biodiversity loss, ~15% of mite species were likely to have become extinct by 2000, with losses currently expected to increase by between 0.6% and 6.0% by 2060. More detailed information on both spatial differences in mite assemblages and anthropogenic threats worldwide is crucial because they underpin the total number of species and their vulnerability to extinction, respectively. The rapid expansion of the protected area estate to capture the maximum possible area of ecosystem heterogeneity, especially in the biodiversity hotspots, is essential, as is best practice management of these areas.

Background: Lamotrigine is a phenyltriazine medication that has been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration as monotherapy and as an adjunctive agent for the treatment of seizure disorder. It was later approved by the FDA for the treatment of bipolar disorder. Lamotrigine is generally well tolerated by patients, but some serious symptoms can occur during treatment. These severe side effects include rashes and multi-organ failure. Lamotrigine has also been associated with the development of mental status changes, frequently when used concurrently with other medications that may impact the metabolism of lamotrigine. Objective: To present the case of a 65-year-old man being treated with lamotrigine and valproic acid who developed mental status changes after the addition of sertraline to his medication regimen, and to compare this case to existing cases reported in the literature. Discussion: Our case adds to the existing literature by demonstrating that patients may experience adverse medication effects despite lamotrigine levels that are normally considered to be in the therapeutic range, highlighting the importance of clinical correlation when obtaining medication levels. Conclusion: Clinicians should use caution interpreting lamotrigine levels when working up delirium, as normal levels may not rule out the development of lamotrigine toxicity.

The eriophyoid mites (Acari: Eriophyoidea) are extremely small, highly specialized and obligately phytophagous, and ~ 80% of the ~ 5,000 known species are monophagous. They include pests of more than 50 important food and industrial crops and ornamental plants. Conversely, other species have been investigated for their potential role in the biological control of weeds. In this literature review, the data on the development time, adult longevity and lifespan of eriophyoid species generated in 74 studies from 1930 to 2021 was compiled. The eriophyoids were from three families, Eriophyidae, Diptilomiopidae and Phytoptidae, 24 genera and 47 species that included 43 eriophyids, two phytoptids and two diptilomiopids. The most studied genus was Aceria (13 species), followed by Aculus (4) and Calacarus (3). The host plants were in a range of vegetative forms, including grasses, a climber, shrubs and trees, in different families that included Poaceae, Rosaceae and Rutaceae. Almost all the investigations were carried out in laboratory settings under numerous combinations of species, gender, diet/host plant, temperature, relative humidity and photoperiod. These variables all affected the development time, adult longevity and lifespan of eriophyoid mites, with temperature consistently a major influence and relative humidity consistently important. Male life stages were always shorter than female life stages. Phyllocoptruta oleivora (Ashmead) males had the shortest lifespan of 7.1 d at 32 °C on green orange fruit and Aculops lycopersici (Massee) females had the longest lifespan of 46.4 d at 11 °C on young tomato leaves. Biological studies on the duration of their life stages are required to develop models that predict the dynamics of eriophyoid populations in the field to support IPM programs and organic farming. Moreover, these studies are becoming increasingly valuable as globalization and climate change facilitate the spread of invasive eriophyoid mite species.

Objective: The current study is an analysis of predictors of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment response in a clinical trial comparing (1) prolonged exposure plus placebo (PE + PLB), (2) PE + sertraline (PE + SERT), and (3) sertraline + enhanced medication management (SERT + EMM) with predictors including time since trauma (TST), self-report of pain, alcohol use, baseline symptoms, and demographics. Methods: Participants (N = 196) were veterans with combat-related PTSD (DSM-IV-TR) of at least 3 months' duration recruited between 2012 and 2016 from 4 sites in the 24-week PROlonGed ExpoSure and Sertraline (PROGrESS) clinical trial (assessments at weeks 0 [intake], 6, 12, 24, 36, and 52). Results: Across treatment conditions, (1) longer TST was predictive of greater week 24 PTSD symptom improvement (β = 1.72, P = .01) after adjusting for baseline, (2) higher baseline pain severity was predictive of smaller symptom improvement (β = -2.96, P = .003), and (3) Hispanic patients showed greater improvement than non-Hispanic patients (β = 12.33, P = .03). No other baseline characteristics, including alcohol consumption, were significantly predictive of week 24 improvement. Comparison of TST by treatment condition revealed a significant relationship only in those randomized to the PE + SERT condition (β = 2.53, P = .03). Longitudinal analyses showed similar results. Conclusions: The finding that longer TST shows larger symptom reductions is promising for PTSD patients who might not seek help for years following trauma. Higher baseline pain severity robustly predicted attenuated and slower response to all treatment conditions, suggesting a common neuropathologic substrate. Finally, in the current study, alcohol use did not impede the effectiveness of pharmacotherapy for PTSD. Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT01524133.

A previously healthy 68-year-old man rapidly developed a severe melancholic depression following influenza infection. There is an evolving understanding of the complex and possibly bidirectional relationship between depression and inflammation. We review the literature concerning this relationship in the context of viral infection and discuss possible implications for treatment.

Effective posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) pharmacotherapy is needed. This 12-week randomized multicenter trial evaluated efficacy and safety of TNX-102 SL, a bedtime sublingual formulation of cyclobenzaprine, in patients with military-related PTSD randomized to TNX-102 SL 2.8 mg or 5.6 mg, or placebo. Primary analysis comparing change from baseline in Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale-5 score between 2.8 mg (n=90) and placebo (n=92) was not significant. Secondary analysis of 5.6 mg (n=49) vs placebo demonstrated a mean difference of -4.5 units, p=.05, or, accounting for missing data by multiple imputation, -5.0 units, p=.03. Clinician Global Impression - Improvement responder rate was greater in 5.6 mg than placebo (p=0.04), as was mean functional improvement in Sheehan Disability Scale social domain (p=.03) and trended in work domain (p=.05). Objective A recent randomized controlled trial of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for major depressive disorder (MDD) in veterans raised the question of whether comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) negatively impacted the outcome of TMS in veterans. To address this, a quality database was analyzed to compare outcomes of MDD treated with TMS in veterans with and without comorbid PTSD. Methods The clinical outcomes of all consecutive veterans with MDD treated with TMS at the James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital as outpatients from October 2013 through September 2018 were included. Patients were initially evaluated by an experienced psychiatrist, and the diagnosis of MDD was made by clinical evaluation per DSM-IV-TR/DSM-5 criteria. At the start of treatment, after every 5 treatments, and at the end of treatment, patients were assessed with self-report and clinician-rated scales of depression. All data were abstracted from an existing quality database. Results Among the 118 patients treated with TMS for depression, 55 (47%) had comorbid PTSD and 63 (53%) had no comorbid PTSD. Response and remission rates by score on the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale were similar between patients with PTSD (52.5% and 40.9%, respectively) and without PTSD (53.8% and 35.6%, respectively). No seizures or persistent adverse effects were observed or reported in either group. Conclusions Comorbid PTSD did not impact the outcome of TMS for depression in this sample of veterans. Future studies should include formal ratings of PTSD to determine if the severity of PTSD affects the outcome.

The livestock-meat subsectors in many subsaharan countries are operating at low levels of technology, productivity and commercialization. Reasons for the phenomenon involve political, social, physical and economic factors. This chapter focuses on the economic factors as they relate to government pricing policies. Pricing policies are a mechanism by which governments in less developed countries try to achieve specific economic and social objectives. A graphical display of the impact of government price controls illustrates the short-run and long-run effects on the development of the livestock-meat subsector. The government's ability to maintain stability in the markets with subsidies consequently fails because foreign exchange is usually limited for importing the meat necessary to satisfy increasing deficits. Private individual’s arid government agencies participated in varying degrees in the wholesaling and retailing activities in each country. Government encroachment into the private sector, in terms of prices and quotas for livestock supplies to butchers, led to recurring meat shortages.

This chapter focuses on the nature of the imperfections in the market structure for food producers and the implications for adjustments in the context of efficiency and equity. A strong linkage exists between marketing and production decisions in the world food industry. Market imperfections probably exist to a much greater degree in the agricultural sector in underdeveloped countries than in developed countries. The producer must plan to set up his own marketing arrangement or look to some outside entity to do the job. A large amount of feasibility research is in order to provide a sound basis for decision making on cooperatives as a prime market outlet for the small-scale producer. The small-scale producers rarely have concentrated market power that can be directed towards reflecting their aim in the political sphere. The most important objective of small-scale marketers is to be able to fit into the appropriate system of market structure and infrastructure to attain efficiency goals.
