This report presents results of test excavations at 35LK1016, an open archaeological site in Fort Rock Basin on the northwestern margin of the Great Basin. Found below the surface at the site, in association with chipped and ground stone tools and debitage, were substantial quantities of fish bone and other faunal remains. This collection of fish bone is the largest yet reported from an archaeological site in Fort Rock Basin. The findings made at 35LK1016 provide an example of the scientific potential of open sites in the Great Basin.

The HQ site is the most extensively investigated of several currently known focal points of aboriginal life around Malheur Lake. A wide-ranging archaeological reconnaissance of the Refuge in 1973 and 1974 resulted in the identification of 166 sites of ancient human activity around Malheur and Harney lakes and south along the Blitzen River (Newman et al. 1974). Widely scattered and often abundant surface traces suggest that most such spots were visited many times over the years for brief periods, probably for some specific purpose. Deep, rich accumulations of artifacts, bones, and other cultural remains that bespeak long-term occupation of a specific place are much less common. The HQ site is one such accumulation; others so far known include the Squaw PU site (35HA1038) on the north shore of Malheur Lake, and the Blitzen Marsh (35HA9) and Diamond Marsh (35HA1263) sites in the riparian area south of the lake (Fagan 1973, 1974; Goddard 1974; Aikens 1983a; Toepel et al. 1985). The geographical placement of these four sites (and other evidence) suggests that each was a center for local exploitation of plant and animal resources (Fig. 1).This paper compares data obtained during 1985 research at the HQ site to the results of earlier work there and at the other three sites to define a prehistoric Malheur lakeshore culture and place it in the broader context of the prehistory of the Desert West.

Knowledge about AIDS and self-reported sexual behaviour was studied among 1532 (893 male, 633 female) Zimbabwean secondary school pupils drawn from 12 schools. Most subjects knew that AIDS is fatal and incurable. However, over 40% of subjects believed that most people with AIDS in Africa are homosexual. Over 40% of respondents did not know that many HIV seropositive individuals look healthy. Nearly 40% of participants believed that HIV can be contracted from toilet seats and 54% of subjects believed that mosquitos can transmit HIV. Puupils from homes in urban areas were better informed about AIDS than were those from homes in rural areas. Forty-six percent of males and nearly 3% of females were reportedly sexually experienced. It is suggested that female under-reporting of sexual activity occurred. Nearly 16% of males reported coital experience with a prostitute. The implications of these findings for future AIDS awareness campaigns in Zimbabwe are considered. Key words--AIDS, sexual behaviour, education, awareness

The Umpqua/Eden site is the primary source of archaeological information about the Lower Umpqua, one of the less well documented native peoples of the southern Northwest Coast. The scene of extensive excavations between 1974 and 1980, Umpqua/Eden was revisited in 1994 when additional small-scale archaeological investigations were carried out in preparation for nominating the site to the National Register of Historic Places and its acquisition by the Archaeological Conservancy. New information is presented about the horizontal and vertical extent of the cultural deposits, the nature of the faunal assemblage, and the site's stratigraphy and chronology. A review of the limited, mostly unpublished, ethnographic record indicates that Umpqua/Eden corresponds to the village of Tki'-mi-ye', one of only seven Lower Umpqua settlements whose locations are known today. Six-hundred and thirteen girls and 601 boys in Zimbabwe completed the Junior Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (JEPQ). The reliability of the Neuroticism (N) and Social Desirability (L) factors was acceptable but the Psychoticism (P) and Extraversion (E) factors possessed modest reliability. While the factorial validity of the P, N and L scales was acceptable, the factorial validity of the E scale was poor. L scores were significantly correlated with N and P scores among girls and boys. Whereas Zimbabwean girls reported higher P scores than did Canadian girls, Zimbabwean boys reported lower P scores than did Canadian boys. Zimbabwean girls and boys reported lower E and N and higher P scores than their Canadian counterparts. This study provides broad support for Eysenck's basic personality model, but it does not support the use of this version of the JEPQ, and especially the E scale, among Zimbabwean children. This article examines AIDS awareness in Zimbabwe before and after the national awareness campaign commenced. 630 teacher-trainees from the two teacher's colleges were surveyed. AIDS awareness was measured using anonymous, true/false questionnaires. Teacher trainees from two colleges were asked whether they intended to change their sexual behavior as a result of AIDS. The sexual behavior of partners were compared before and after the AIDS awareness campaign. Thus, the data suggest that the future educational campaigns should emphasize that HIV is transmitted primarily by heterosexual intercourse with asymptomatic seropositives.
