3. A Re-Examination of the Italian Parental Monitoring Scale: Development, Validation, Gender, and School Success Measurement Invariance

Abstract

Parental monitoring (PM) is a key construct in research on children's well-being and healthy development referring to the attention parents pay to their children's activities and whereabouts. However, existing literature suggests that the psychometric properties of its measurement tools are still perfect. For this study, a revised Italian parental monitoring scale (I-PM-R) was developed and validated with data from 835 participants (63% females), aged between 10 and 20 years old. The sample was divided into two sub-samples. One was used for parallel and exploratory factor analyses, and the other was used for confirmatory factor analysis. A total of eight factors were thus identified. The scale exhibited invariance in relation to children's gender and school success, and associations with demographic variables and school performance. The I-PM-R contributes to the need to move toward psychometric quality advances in the measurement of PM.

Abstract

Past research explored the relationship between personality, moral disengagement, and deception and found a general trend showing that the lower people score on the big five personality factors, but the higher they score on moral disengagement and Machiavellianism, the higher their lying tendency. However, a limitation of past research is that it has usually adopted a variable-centred approach, whereas a person-centred approach might describe people in more detail and provide further insight into the relationship between personality and morality. In the present study, we collected data from 316 participants and asked them to fill an on-line questionnaire which included measures on personality, moral disengagement, and lying tendency (perceived lying ability, frequency, negativity and contextuality). The latter was measured via the newly developed Structure of Deception (SoD) scale (Makowski et al., Current Psychology, 2021 (See CR30)). We had to aims. First, to validate an Italian version of the SoD, which showed a good factor structure, gender measurement invariance, and good construct and criterion validity. Second, to explore the association between personal characteristics and lying tendency. Personality and morality scores were combined to obtain subpopulations of participants by a mean of cluster analysis. We obtained four clusters, one of which was marked by high Machiavellianism and moral disengagement but low scores on the personality factors, and one of which showed the opposite trend. The results also showed that cluster membership, and hence personal characteristics, was associated with lying tendency. The person-centred approach can be applied in research on lying. 15. Development and application of first-principles methods for complex oxide surfaces and interfaces

Abstract

In this thesis we develop and apply a variety of first-principles computational methods to the study of complex oxide heterostructures. Firstly, we introduce a new set of partially localised orbitals that offer a natural description for 1D- and 2D-periodic systems, providing the same accuracy as traditional plane-wave DFT-based approaches but with a computational cost that increases only linearly with the size of the system along the non-periodic directions, thus alleviating the unfavourable scaling of traditional DFT calculations. The method was implemented in the ONETEP code, which is a leading large-scale DFT code that was originally designed to work with fully localised orbitals and Gamma-point sampling only of the Brillouin zone. We show that the use of our new basis set in conjunction with the implementation of the Brillouin zone sampling at arbitrary k-points significantly extends the systems that can be studied with a DFT-based approach. We then discuss the performance of a force field parametrised to reproduce DFT energies, stresses and forces in bulk barium titanate (BTO), when it is applied to the study of BTO surfaces and interfaces. We find that, upon structural relaxation, the displacements of the surface atoms are qualitatively incorrect when compared with DFT predictions because of the different local environment with respect to the bulk, and that the transferability of the force field can be greatly improved by introducing a handful of extra parameters for the surface atoms only. We then explore interesting phenomena at the interface between two different complex oxides. We first analyse the possibility to induce oxygen octahedral distortions from a perovskite substrate into an originally undistorted film. We observe that for the system of interest (barium zirconate grown on top of strontium zirconate) the induced distortions have a non-negligible decay length of roughly 25 angstrom, and the gradients associated with the decaying modes can induce novel physical properties in the film. We finally explore the application of complex oxides as solid electrolytes in next-generation Li-ion batteries, a promising path towards the development of efficient, light and safe energy storage systems to be used in the transportation industry. We develop a custom framework to perform a preliminary screening of potential candidates, focusing on the requirement of the electrolyte to be stable against commonly used electrodes, and we find materials that are stable in contact with pure Li metal at significantly higher voltages than the traditional organic solvents used in current Li-ion batteries.

Abstract

Brugada syndrome is a rare arrhythmogenic syndrome associated mainly with pathogenic variants in the SCN5A gene. Right ventricle outflow tract fibrosis has been reported in some cases of patients diagnosed with Brugada syndrome. Pulmonary atresia with an intact ventricular septum is characterized by the lack of a functional pulmonary valve, due to the underdevelopment of the right ventricle outflow tract. We report, for the first time, a 4-year-old boy with pulmonary atresia with an intact ventricular septum who harbored a pathogenic de novo variant in SCN5A, and the ajmaline test unmasked a type-1 Brugada pattern. We suggest that deleterious variants in the SCN5A gene could be implicated in pulmonary atresia with an intact ventricular septum embryogenesis, leading to overlapping phenotypes. Abstract

We present an implementation in a linear-scaling density-functional theory code of an electronic enthalpy method, which has been found to be natural and efficient for the ab initio calculation of finite systems under hydrostatic pressure. Based on a definition of the system volume as that enclosed within an electronic density isosurface [Phys. Rev. Lett., 94, 145501 (2005)], it supports both geometry optimizations and molecular dynamics simulations. We introduce an approach for calibrating the parameters defining the volume in the context of geometry optimizations and discuss their significance. Results in good agreement with simulations using explicit solvents are obtained, validating our approach. Size-dependent pressure-induced structural transformations and variations in the energy gap of hydrogenated silicon nanocrystals are investigated, including one comparable in size to recent experiments. Abstract

Previous research has highlighted the positive impact of greater health-related quality of life (Hr-QoL) and subjective well-being (SWB) on chronic diseases' severity and progression. There is a paucity of studies investigating the long-term trajectories of these variables among hypertensive patients. The present study aims to investigate the relationships between psychological variables (Type A and D personality, locus of control—LoC, self-esteem, and trait anxiety) with SWB and Hr-QoL in patients with hypertension and comorbid metabolic syndrome. A total of 185 volunteer patients (130 males, 70.3%; mean age 54 ± 10.93) were enrolled. Patients filled out measures of Hr-QoL and SWB, LoC, and self-esteem at three time points—Type A and D behaviors and anxiety measures only at baseline. Analyses were run through two-level hierarchical mixed models with repeated measures (Level 1) nested within participants (Level 2), controlling for sociodemographic and clinical confounders. Neither Hr-QoL nor SWB changed over time. Patients with greater self-esteem and internal LoC (and lower external LoC) increased their SWB and Hr-QoL up to 1-year follow-up. A greater Type A behavior and trait anxiety at baseline predicted a longitudinal increase in most of the dependent variables. Results suggest that it could be useful to tailor interventions targeting specific variables to increase Hr-QoL and SWB among hypertensive patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This study proposes a psychometric validation of the Italian version of theChild–Parent Relationship Scale (CPRS) developed by Pianta in 1992. Based onattachment theory, the scale assesses parents’ relationship perceptions with theirown child and comprises three scales: Closeness, Conflict, and Dependency. Asample of 501 parents (188 fathers and 313 mothers) completed 30 items of theItalian version of the Child–Parent Relationship Scale (CPRS-I) online, but only 437 answered 85% of the entire protocol; hence, the analyses only focused on 437 participants. The first analysis of the original theoretical model revealed poorfit, item loadings, and internal consistency. Therefore, a follow-up analysis wasconducted. Exploratory and confirmatory analyses with a split sample (EFA = 218; CFA = 219) confirmed the original three-factor structure of the Italian sample, although some items were eliminated. The validity and reliability of the Italianversion of the CPRS-I were also verified by correlating the above three factors withmeasures of adult attachment styles and children’s internalizing and externalizingbehaviors. The CPRS-I showed significant correlations with all tested constructs,in line with those found by Driscoll and Pianta for the short form of the scale.Our results confirm that the CPRS-I has the same structure as the original scale; therefore, it can be  a useful tool for assessing parents’ perceptions of their relationship with their children. The implications for educational and clinical settings are also discussed.

Abstract

This large, international dataset contains survey responses from N = 12,570 students from 100 universities in 35 countries, collected in 21 languages. We measured anxieties (statistics, mathematics, test, trait, social interaction, performance, creativity, intolerance of uncertainty, and fear of negative evaluation), self-efficacy, persistence, and the cognitive reflection test, and collected demographics, previous mathematics grades, self-reported and official statistics grades, and statistics module details. Data reuse potential is broad, including testing links between anxieties and statistics/mathematics education factors, and examining instruments’ psychometric properties across different languages and contexts.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the role of resilience resources in patients' lifestyle changes after the first Acute Coronary event. 275 Italian patients (84.0% men; mean age = 57.5, SD = 7.9) participated in a longitudinal study. Resilience resources (Self-esteem, Dispositional Optimism, Sense of Coherence – SOC, General and Disease-specific Self-efficacy), and lifestyles (diet, physical activity, and smoking) were assessed twice (at baseline and after 6 months). Path analysis using latent change models was performed to model the combined effect of levels and changes of the resilience resources over lifestyle changes. Patients with strong SOC at baseline were less prone to smoke and more prone to decrease smoking; enhancement in SOC was associated with a smoking decrease. High Disease-specific Self-efficacy at baseline was associated with an improvement in all lifestyles; enhancement in Disease-specific Self-efficacy predicted an increase in physical activity. Findings underline the need to design psychological interventions that promote patients' Disease-specific Self-efficacy and SOC.

Abstract

A key factor to successful secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is optimal patient adherence to treatment. However, unsatisfactory rates of adherence to treatment for CVD risk factors and CVD have been observed consistently over the last few decades. Hence, achieving optimal adherence to lifestyle measures and guideline-directed medical therapy in secondary prevention and rehabilitation is a great challenge to many healthcare professionals. Therefore, in this European Association of Preventive Cardiology clinical consensus document, a modern reappraisal of the adherence to optimal treatment is provided, together with simple, practical, and feasible suggestions to achieve this goal in the clinical setting, focusing on evidence-based concepts.

Abstract

Parental monitoring (PM) is a key construct in research on children's well‐being and healthy development referring to the attention parents pay to their children's activities and whereabouts. However, existing literature suggests that the psychometric properties of its measurement tools are still perfect. For this study, a revised Italian parental monitoring scale (I‐PM‐R) was developed and validated with data from 835 participants (63% females), aged between 10 and 20 years old. The sample was divided into two sub‐samples. One was used for parallel and exploratory factor analyses, and the other was used for confirmatory factor analysis. A total of eight factors were thus identified. The scale exhibited invariance in relation to children's gender and school success, and associations with demographic variables and school performance. The I‐PM‐R contributes to the need to move toward psychometric quality advances in the measurement of PM.
