Grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) aquaculture is economically vital due to the high value of its roe. However, it faces significant risks from disease outbreaks, particularly from Nocardia seriolae. Current reliance on antibiotics has drawbacks, highlighting the potential of probiotics as a promising alternative. Despite this, no studies have focused on the effects and mechanisms of probiotics in disease prevention and treatment in grey mullet. This study, therefore, investigates the efficacy of probiotics in enhancing disease resistance and promoting growth in grey mullet. Three strains of probiotics, Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus FS3051, Limosilactobacillus reuteri FS3052, and Bacillus subtilis natto NTU-18, were selected to evaluate their anti-N. seriolae activity and hydrolytic enzyme secretion in vitro. Then, 144 grey mullet were randomly divided into four groups: control, L. rhamnosus FS3051, L. reuteri FS3052, and B. subtilis natto NTU-18. After being fed the corresponding diet for 28 days, fish were measured for immune gene expression and short-term growth followed by challenge of N. seriolae. Survival rates were recorded for 35 days post challenge. Additionally, the gut microbiota of the control and probiotic groups with effects on both growth and protection against N. seriolae were analyzed to investigate the potential role of gut microbiota. Results demonstrated that L. rhamnosus FS3051 and L. reuteri FS3052 inhibited N. seriolae, while B. subtilis natto NTU-18 did not inhibited N. seriolae. Probiotics also had the ability to secrete hydrolytic enzymes. Probiotic-fed grey mullet showed significant improvements in weight gain ratio, feed efficiency, and specific growth rate, particularly in the B. subtilis natto NTU-18 group. Immune gene expression was enhanced by probiotics, especially L. rhamnosus, FS3051, which induced IL-8, IL-1β, TNF-α, IFN-γ, and MHCI. Survival rates post-N. seriolae challenge improved significantly for L. rhamnosus FS3051-fed fish. L. rhamnosus FS3051 also altered the gut microbiota, enriching beneficial genera like Lactobacillus, which correlated positively with immune responses and growth, while reducing Mycoplasma and Rhodobacter, which were negatively correlated with immune responses. We report first-time evidence of barrier feeding techniques in the population of common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) at the estuary of the Tiber River (Rome, Italy), used to prey on the flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus). We describe an event that occurred in summer 2023, consisting of dolphins forcing schools of mullets against different types of barriers, i.e. sea surface, coastal breakwater blocks and other dolphins. We provide the first visual and acoustic account of this predation modality in the Mediterranean Sea, showing that bottlenose dolphins adopted techniques to fragmentate prey assemblages and then to limit prey escape routes by forcing them against barriers. In this way dolphins were able to catch the mullets both in air and in the water. Such a technique possibly depends on the ability of sensing each other in the hunting group and of exchanging information through different types of vocalizations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT The present investigation explored the growth performance, haematological parameters and serum biochemistry of flathead grey mullet under recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) and traditional culture systems. Nine hundred healthy fish, weighing 43.80 ± 3.55 g and length 16.54 ± 0.82 cm were randomly distributed to three treatments of RAS and traditional culture systems (T1: 20% of water changed daily; T2: once‐through system 250 L/h; T3: RAS—20% of water changed weekly) in nine concrete tanks of 4000 L at stocking density of 100 fish/tank and each treatment had three replicates. Fish were fed (33.1% crude protein, 3 mm pellets) twice a day at a rate of 3% for 12 weeks. These findings suggest that the T3 followed by T2 led to notable improvements in growth performance compared to other culture systems. Significantly elevated values of weight gain, length gain, specific growth rate, average daily gain and survival % were observed in T3. The RBCs exhibited a significant decrease under T2. Haemoglobin concentrations and WBC counts significantly increased under RAS. Significant values of mean cell haemoglobin and mean cell haemoglobin concentration were recorded in T2. Total protein, albumin and globulin enhanced significantly under RAS, whereas the highest values of cortisol were observed in T2 and T3. These findings demonstrate that the RAS followed by once‐through system significantly improve growth performance, feed efficiency and survival, as well as enhancing the haematology and serum biochemical status of flathead grey mullet. Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) is an opportunistic bacterium that is widely distributed in aquatic environments and causes major economic losses in fish and public health hazards.This study aimed to identify the occurrence of P. aeruginosa in samples collected from fish and fish handlers, and to investigate the antimicrobial susceptibility, virulence determinants, and biofilm genes of P. aeruginosa isolates. A total of 276 samples were cross-sectionally collected from Nile tilapia (53), Golden grey mullet (52), Mediterranean horse mackerel (50), Striped red mullet (71), and fish handlers (50) at five different retail fish markets in Damietta Governorate, Egypt. Pseudomonas species (spp.) were biochemically identified in 57.9% of the total examined samples. Peudomonas aeruginosa were the most prevalent species isolated from the fish and human samples via PCR technique. Peudomonas aeruginosa isolates exhibited full resistance (100%) to tobramycin (TOB), gentamicin (CN), and colistin (CL), with a high level of susceptibility (88.5%) to imipenem (IPM) using the disk diffusion method. Most P. aeruginosa isolates (84.6%) exhibited drug resistance, with 61.5% were multidrug resistance (MDR) and 23.1% were extensive drug resistance (XDR). Most isolates had at least four virulence-associated genes (lasB, toxA, exoU, and oprL) and three biofilm genes (psIA, peIA, and lasR) by using uniplex PCR. The lasI, and rhlR Quorum Sensing (QS) genes were identified in 84.6% and 61.5% in the examined P. aeruginosa isolates, respectively. The highest mortality rate in Nile tilapia experimentally infected with P. aeruginosa isolate encoding most of virulent genes. Multivariate analyses revealed high heterogeneity among the examined isolates. This study revealed the emergence of virulent and drug resistant P. aeruginosa isolates in fish, poses high risks to consumers and food. Thus, strict hygienic measures should be considered when catching, handling, and storing fish, in addition to the routine application of antimicrobial susceptibility testing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigated the effects of dietary garlic powder and fermented garlic powder supplementation at 1% and 2% levels on growth performance, digestive tract efficacy, blood biochemistry, immunity, and antioxidant status of Liza ramada (n = 225 fish; 86.00 ± 0.42 g) over a 60-day period. Fish fed diets supplemented with both forms of garlic at both levels exhibited significantly improved final body weight, weight gain, specific growth rate, and feed conversion ratio compared to the control group. Digestive enzyme activities (amylase, lipase, and protease) were significantly enhanced in all supplemented groups. Blood biochemical analysis revealed reduced glucose levels and increased total protein in garlic-supplemented groups, with no adverse effects on liver or kidney function markers. Immune parameters, including lysozyme activity, bactericidal activity against Streptococcus agalactiae, alternative complement pathway (ACP), and respiratory burst (NBT), were significantly enhanced in garlic-supplemented groups, with fermented garlic showing more pronounced effects. Antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD, CAT, and GPx) were also significantly increased in all supplemented groups, particularly in those fed fermented garlic. No significant differences in survival rates were observed among treatments. The results suggest that both garlic powder and fermented garlic powder supplementation, especially at the 2% level, can effectively improve growth, feed utilization, immune function, and antioxidant status in L. ramada. Fermented garlic generally demonstrated superior effects, indicating its potential as a beneficial feed additive in aquaculture. Based on these findings, it is recommended to incorporate fermented garlic powder at a 2% level in L. ramada diets to optimize growth performance and health status. Moolgarda cunnesius (Valenciennes, 1836) is a species of the Mugilidae family, commonly known as a delicious fish with high nutritional and economic value, making it very promising. Zoological research methods and DNA barcoding are used to study this fish. Morphological Characteristics: The Leaf mullet has 62 to 75 gill rakers on the lower limb of the first gill arch. The upper jaw is slightly curved downward, and the anterior margin of the anterior alveolar is slightly concave. The body has 37 to 43 scales. The first dorsal fin has 4 spines, while the second dorsal fin is smaller and starts behind the anal fin. Pectoral Fins: These fins are 2/3 of the head length. Anal and Pelvic Fins: These fins are small. The second dorsal and anal fins have few scales, with scales only on the anterior and basal parts. The dorsal surface is green, the flanks and abdomen are iridescent silver, and the fins are slightly dull. There is a difference in the measurement criteria between the study areas, but there is no difference between male and female groups. Mahalanobis distance analysis showed no conformational difference between male and female groups of M. cunnesius and no similarity between sexes. Nutritional biological characteristics: The food composition includes a variety of zooplankton phytoplankton benthic animals, and organic detritus. Organic humus has the highest occurrence, followed by dinoflagellates, blue-green algae, diatoms, and the lowest is arthropods. This diverse food composition illustrates that M. cunnesius is an omnivorous species. Genetic Characteristics: COI gene DNA barcoding was used to study the genetic diversity of M. cunnesius in two regions of the North and the South of Tam Giang lagoon. Amplified and sequenced 10 samples of the COI gene of M. cunnesius in Tam Giang lagoon recorded a size of 650 bp. The rate of difference in COI sequences of the 2 samples is low compared to previous studies. The similarity coefficient of M. cunnesius in the two areas of Tam Giang lagoon is very high (0.9953). Water quality in land-based fish production can be controlled through either instantaneous water exchange or costly wastewater treatment followed by recirculation. Agricultural-aquaculture integration is an excellent alternative technique for reducing nutrient discharge levels, boosting profitability, and converting fish culture wastewater into valuable products. The current study employed a solar energy system to power two separate IMTA-aquaponics systems (Nutrient Film Technique, NFT, and Floating Raft Systems, FRS) for the cultivation of Nile tilapia, African catfish, thin-lipped grey mullet, freshwater crayfish, freshwater mussels, and a variety of vegetables. Tilapia and catfish were fed exclusively on diets under the IMTA system. All wastewater from tilapia and catfish ponds, both dissolved and solid, flows sequentially to ponds containing other cultivated species. The water then flows through the IMTA system's terminal point to the NFT and FRS systems before returning to the tilapia and catfish ponds, allowing complete control of the nutrient flow throughout this entire circular system. Two 147-day production cycles were concluded. The results from the second production cycle are reported. Total biomass gain for aquatic species in the IMTA system was 736.46 kg, compared to 145.49 kg in the tilapia and 271.01 kg in the catfish monoculture systems. The current IMTA system had a cumulative feed conversion ratio (FCR) of 0.90, while the FCRs for tilapia and catfish were 1.28 and 1.42, respectively. Nile tilapia and catfish consumed 571.90 kg of feed containing 25.70 kg of nitrogen (N) and 9.70 kg of phosphorus (P), reflecting, and gaining 11.41 and 3.93 kg of dietary N and P, representing 44.40 and 40.46% dietary N and P retention, respectively. In the IMTA system, the addition of mullet and prawn as detrivores aquatic animals improves dietary N and P utilization efficiency to 59.06 and 51.19%, respectively, while the addition of mussels as herbivore animals improves dietary N and P utilization efficiency to 65.61 and 54.67%, respectively. Finally, using FRS and NFT as hydroponic systems increased dietary N and P efficiency to 83.51% N and 96.82% P, respectively. This study shows that the IMTA-Aquaponic system, as a bio-integrated food production system, can convert the majority of fish-fed residues into valuable products suitable for desert, rural, and urban areas in impoverished and developing countries. The Lebranche mullet Mugil liza is a marine fish of great importance for artisanal and industrial fishing, as well as aquaculture. The use of live feeds during the larviculture phase of marine fish is a significant component of production costs. The present study evaluated the effects of the feeding transition on different larval stages of M. liza, from the combined supply of live feed (Brachionus rotundiformis + Artemia franciscana) and live + inert feed (Artemia franciscana + inert diet) until the weaning phase to only the inert diet. A total of 3240 M. liza larvae (weight 0.0133 ± 0.0062 g and length 0.793 ± 0.160 cm) were distributed among the 12 experimental units (n = 270), resulting in four groups with three replicates each. Treatment groups consisted of feed transition with A. franciscana (enriched metanauplii) to commercial inert feed starting weaning at four different larval ages: 28, 31, 34, and 37 days post hatching. Zootechnical performance indexes and intestinal histomorphometry were evaluated. Mortality, condition factor, and length variation coefficient did not show significant differences between treatments. Final weight, final length, weight gain, and length gain were significantly greater in larvae that started weaning at 31, 34, and 37 days post hatching. Weight coefficient of variation was significantly higher in larvae that started weaning at 28 days (67.51 ± 11.70) compared to 37 days (34.40 ± 7.30). In intestinal histology, villi height (180.3 ± 4.4) was significantly higher in larvae that started weaning at 37 days post hatching. Considering the evidence found in the present study, it is recommended to start weaning M. liza on the 31st day post‐hatching, using a 2‐day co‐feeding protocol (31st and 32nd days). This study aimed to investigate whether fermented rice bran can substitute soybean meal in the diet of the grey mullet. Four different substitution levels (0, 5, 10, and 15%) in the diet were investigated for soybean meal replacement with fermented rice bran (FRB). In the 0-10% replacement groups, weight, specific growth rate, feed efficiency ratio, body protein level, and protein efficiency ratio were significantly higher (P<0.05) compared to the 15% replacement group. Additionally, there was no difference (P>0.05) in the grey mullet's growth rate in the 0 and 10% replacement treatments. Furthermore, replacing up to 15% of soybean meal with fermented rice bran (FRB) did not significantly affect the overall immunity of the grey mullet. Additionally, incorporating fermented rice bran (FRB) significantly increased the gut microbiota counts (P< 0.05). The greatest increase in the gut microbiota was observed when up to 5% of soybean meal was replaced with FRB. From an economic perspective, substituting up to 5% of soybean meal with FRB reduced the cost of formulating the diet by 0.64% and decreased the cost per kilogram of weight gain by 5 to 10%, or approximately 9.9 and 1.5%, respectively. Overall, the study suggests that replacing up to 10% of rice bran with FRB can enhance growth performance, feed consumption, body composition, intestinal microbiota counts, and financial viability in the grey mullet (Mugil cephalus). Fermentation technology is essential for raising feed's nutritional content and improving quality. The purpose of the current feeding study was to assess the impact of switching from raw rice bran to fermented rice bran (FRB) on the growth performance, nutritional consumption, economic value, and histological alterations in the gut and liver of the grey mullet, Mugil cephalus (with an initial weight of 5.7 ± 0.01g). The control diet (c) and the other three isoproteic (27% crude protein) diets (B50, B75, and B100) were formulated with FRB replacing 50, 75, and 100% of the rice bran, respectively. Following a 60-day feeding period, the grey mullet given the B100% diet had greater final weight, weight gain, specific growth rate, and protein contents in their bodies compared to the control group (P< 0.05). Additionally, the fish given the B100% diet showed improved feed conversion ratio, protein efficiency ratio, and feed efficiency ratio values. Furthermore, the insertion of FRB resulted in a substantial increase in the count of intestinal microbiota (P< 0.05). In contrast to the control group, the fermented therapies had no detrimental effects on the overall immunity. From an economic perspective, the cost of formulating the diet increased by 0.88% when rice bran was fully replaced with fermented rice bran (FRB) (B100). The results of this study suggest that substituting rice bran with FRB up to 100% may improve growth performance, feed consumption, gut health, and profitability in juvenile M. cephalus. Objective. This study was performed to expose nematodes of the Anisakidae family to different aqueous extracts and identify those extracts with nematicidal capacity. Material and methods. The concentrations of bioactive compounds in the aqueous extracts of epazote (Dysphania ambrosioides), onion (Allium cepa), siempre viva (Kalanchoe pinnata), and xoconostle (Opuntia oligacantha) were identified. Live parasites of the Anisakidae family were obtained from Lisa fish (Mugilidae) and exposed to different concentrations of these extracts. Results. K. pinnata and O. oligacantha exhibited higher concentrations of bioactive compounds, including polyphenols, flavonoids, and tannins, as well as greater antioxidant activity in DPPH and ABTS assays. The parasite mortality rate was 100% at 48 hours with a concentration of 855 mg/mL of K. pinnata. For O. oligacantha, the pulp and whole fruit extracts caused 66% mortality at 72 hours. The main histopathological changes induced by K. pinnata were muscle vacuoles. In O. oligacantha, the whole fruit caused degeneration and vacuolization of the intestinal epithelium, while the seed extract caused edema, intestinal degeneration, and vacuolization. Conclusions. These results suggest that aqueous extracts of K. pinnata and O. oligacantha are effective nematicidal agents against nematodes of the Anisakidae family. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present descriptions of two newly discovered species of Myxobolus (Myxobolidae) that infect Mugil curema: Myxobolus mundauensis n. sp. found in gills and Myxobolus patriciae n. sp. found in intestines. These descriptions are based on the morphology of myxospores, histological analysis, and sequencing of the small subunit ribosomal DNA (ssrDNA). The myxospores of both species differ in the width and length of their spore bodies, and their ssrDNA sequences showed a 10.6% difference. These findings support the identification of these parasites as distinct and previously unknown species. Phylogenetic analysis revealed a subclade consisting of species that parasitize Mugiliformes, with Myxobolus mundauensis n. sp. being closely related to Myxobolus maceioensis, and Myxobolus patriciae n. sp. being closely related to Myxobolus curemae. Our analysis aligns with previous research suggesting a strong correlation between host orders and phylogenetic patterns within the Myxobolidae family. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nineteen traits were described to define the shapes of the otoliths. The outcomes of this study display ontogenetic variations for different age groups based on the recorded shapes. Otoliths of the young individuals belonging to fish length groups GI and GII have shown differences in the otolith shape from those of the older individuals of the remaining seven length groups examined. A comparison with earlier published otolith description on C. auratus collected from other areas showed some interspecific variation across larger geographic distances, making some characters useless for diagnostic purposes. Other otolith features were shown to be consistent in otoliths from different length groups and such characteristics could be considered for species identification purposes. These characteristics are otolith width, depth, shape of the mesial and the lateral surfaces, shape of the sulcus acusticus, shape of the ostium and cauda and shape of the ostio-caudal differentiation. The commercial activity of the grey mullet (known as Tainha: TAI) and Tambaqui (TAM) generates tons of waste that can be turned into valuable resources. Therefore, this work aimed to chemically characterize and quantify the fatty acids profiles of the two fishes. GCMS quantification was performed by using calibration curves built from a standard that contains 19 FAME. The analysis revealed that visceral wastes from both fishes contain 16 fatty acids (FA) consisting of saturated (SFA), monounsaturated (MUFA) and polyunsaturated (PUFA). However, their compositions were different as FA side chains in TAI and TAM contain 12 to 20 and 13 to 22 carbon atoms, respectively. Also, the SFA amount in TAI was greater than in TAM. On the other hand, TAM is richer in MUFA and PUFA compared to TAI. Both have similar chemical compositions of ω-3 and ω-6 in PUFA and ω-5, ω-7, and ω-9 in MUFA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work is devoted to the study of the abundance, distribution and growth performance of five Mugilidae species in three types of coastal habitats (coastal sea, estuaries and lagoon) located in a limited geographical area in the south-western Mediterranean (eastern coast of Algeria). The four sites considered (Caroube Beach, Mellah Lagoon, Boukhmira and Mafragh Estuaries) are differentiated by their salinity, which evolves at different intervals. The five species enter the considered paralic environments at very small sizes (2–3 cm TL). Regardless of site, Liza saliens is the most abundant (46.92%), followed by Liza aurata (23.72%), Chelon labrosus (13.96%), Liza ramada (11.80%) and Mugil cephalus (3.50%). Each species has a different occupation profile for each site (date of recruitment, relative abundance and demographic structure). The same is true for daily growth, which is better at Mafragh for L. saliens (0.7 ± 0.13 mm/day), at Boukhmira and Mafragh for L. aurata (0.53 ± 0.08 and 0.48 ± 0.09 mm/day, respectively), at Caroube for L. ramada (0.58 ± 0.12 mm/day) and at Mellah for C. labrosus (0.59 ± 0.14 mm/day) and M. cephalus (0.68 ± 0.17 mm/day). The closeness of the daily growth values for the five species to data obtained by various multi-year ageing methods (scalimetry, otolithometry) shows the validity of using otolith microstructures to determine the age of juvenile 0+ Mugilidae. This study shows heterogeneity in the relative abundance, demographic structure and somatic development of the five species considered depending on their habitat and suggests the influence of certain abiotic parameters on some of them. The two most interesting species for aquaculture (Liza ramada and M. cephalus) are relatively the least abundant, but still have interesting potential for freshwater aquaculture, because of their euryhalinity and their interesting maximum length, as well as their relatively fast growth in freshwater. Reproductive biology of the Corsula Mullet, Rhinomugil corsula (Hamilton, 1822) (Mugiliformes: Mugilidae) was carried out based on 1166 (394 male and 772 female) fish samples collected monthly from the fishermen's catch of Sitakunda coast of the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh, from December 2016 to November 2017. Yearly male and female sex ratio were 1 : 1.96 (P < 0.01). In the male fish, immature, mature, and spent gonads were recorded as 69%, 27%, and 4%, respectively, while in the female fish, immature, maturing, mature, ripe, and spent gonads were recorded as 72%, 9% 11%, 5%, and 3%, respectively. First sexual maturity in male and female fish was attained at 16 cm and 21.5 cm length, respectively. The fish was a prolonged breeder with a peak in late monsoon. Highest GSI and GLI of male and female were recorded in September. Spawning season extended from July to November, and the peak was in September. Ova‐diameter ranged from 0.01 mm to 0.81 mm. Fecundity varied from 31488 to 251880 eggs/fish. Fecundity factor varied between 1099.09 and 2808.23 eggs/g of body weight. Relationships between fecundity and total body length, total body weight, ovary length, and ovary weight were highly significant (P < 0.01). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The combined production of three varieties of lettuce (romaine, iceberg, and red leaf) with flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) was tested in triplicate in three independent coupled aquaponic units with no thermal control. For this purpose, a total of 114 fish (2.5 kg/m3) were stocked in each fish tank (2 m3), and 92 lettuces were planted in the hydroponic unit (6 m2). As no thermal control was included in the design of the aquaponic system, water temperatures declined from maximum values of 20.4 °C to minimum values of 5.0 °C, which directly affected fish growth. However, the conditions imposed by the aquaponic system were suitable for promoting lettuce's growth and external appearance, as no pests or leaf discoloration were noticed. Lettuce survival was similar among the three tested varieties (98.5 ± 1.7%). The yields for the romaine and iceberg varieties were 384 ± 100 g/lettuce and 316 ± 70 g/lettuce, respectively, and that for the red leaf variety was lower, at 176 ± 75 g/lettuce. Yield values ranged between 3.6 and 4.4 kg/m2 depending on the replicate considered (4.0 ± 0.4 kg/m2). The taxonomy of the family Mugilidae has historically posed challenges, marked by discrepancies between described and valid species, compounded by cryptic diversity and a similar external appearance. Previous studies left four of six lineages unidentified within Crenimugil, including Crenimugil sp. A and Crenimugil sp. B. The goal of this study is to provide a detailed revision of species assigned to Crenimugil by examining specimens from the Red Sea, which is the type locality of Mugil crenilabis, Mugil seheli and Mugil tade, which were here genetically analyzed. After demonstrating that the genus contains nine monophyletic lineages and Moolgarda pura is a valid nominal species, the mugilid genus Moolgarda is restored. Consequently, Moolgarda has priority over Crenimugil and Valamugil. Additional morphological analyses of specimens from the Red Sea assigned to Moolgarda sp. A and Moolgarda sp. B identified them as representing Moolgarda seheli and Moolgarda crenilabis, respectively. A phylogenetic analysis, including new DNA barcodes, confirmed a wide distribution range of both species in the Indo-West Pacific. The identity of the lineage previously identified as Crenimugil crenilabis remains doubtful, and it is referred to as Moolgarda cf. crenilabis here. A third lineage, previously named Crenimugil buchanani, is re-described as Moolgarda tade, a species originally reported from the Red Sea with a long history of taxonomic confusion. The species is widely distributed in the Indo-West Pacific and distinguished from other congeners by falcate second dorsal and anal fins that are distinctly higher than the first dorsal fin. Estuaries that become closed from the ocean through the formation of a sand bar are particularly susceptible to degradation and often experience poor water quality and fish kills. Sampling was conducted seasonally for two years in the deeper waters of the Vasse–Wonnerup (southwestern Australia) after a large fish mortality event to identify the fish species present and determine if richness, abundance, diversity and faunal composition differed among regions and over time. Species richness, abundance and diversity were far greater in the downstream regions than in the upstream regions, reflecting patterns in salinity. Catch rates of two marine estuarine-opportunist mugilids (Mugil cephalus and Aldrichetta forsteri) and an estuarine-resident sparid (Acanthopagrus butcheri), which were the species most affected by the mortality event, were relatively stable. It is suggested that before sampling commenced, mugilids had entered the estuary following an artificial sand bar breach, while the loss of 0+ (new recruits) A. butcheri in the mortality event and subsequent recruitment failure prevented stocks from increasing. Temporal shifts in fish composition were driven by less abundant species, which utilized the estuary more opportunistically. Increases in the occurrences and abundances of these species coincided with an open bar and salinities close to those of seawater. The thin-lipped grey mullet, Liza ramada, a commercially significant fish in Egypt, was studied for its expression patterns along the brain-pituitarygonad axis in female L. ramada during the spawning season of 2022 in both captive and wild habitats. The inspected genes included Kiss2, Gpr54, Gnrh1, and Drd2 genes in the brain and ovary, as well as Lhβ, Fshβ, and Slα genes in the pituitary and ovary. Relative expressions of all studied genes either in the brain, or pituitary, and ovary were higher in ripe females than in immature ones. Captive females had higher Drd2 gene expressions; nevertheless, mature wild females had higher expression values for the other investigated genes that were measured in the brain, or pituitary and ovary. The study found correlations between gene expression patterns in wild and captive females (P< 0.05), suggesting that confinement may affect reproductive physiology. The depletion of the grey mullet population in the Taiwan Strait has generated interest in conservation initiatives and to enhance the effectiveness of restoration initiatives, it is essential to comprehend the specific habitat preferences of the species in question, particularly in relation to environmental changes. In this study, habitat suitability modelling was used to investigate the distribution patterns of grey mullet. Sea surface height (SSH) was the most significant predictor of the grey mullet standardized catch per unit effort (S.CPUE). Furthermore, sea surface temperature (SST) was the second most important oceanographic parameter, followed by mixed-layer depth (MLD). The grey mullet S.CPUE peaked in regions with the summed SST, Chla, salinity, SSH, MLD and current values being 20 °C, 0.9 mg/m3, 34.5 psu, 0.45 m, 18–38 m, and 0.25 m2/s2, respectively. From late October, HSI levels in the northern Taiwan ocean increased, with a consistent upward trend. The distribution expanded in November and December, focusing on the northern and mid-ocean regions west of Taiwan. HSI levels peak in January and February, especially in Taiwan's coastal region. High HSI distribution shifts away from coastlines and diminishes in April. Determining appropriate methods to release fish into confined water bodies such as lakes necessitates an awareness of the potential impact on local fish and the ecosystem in general, as well as a cost-benefit analysis. The purpose of this study was to apply various release strategies boosting the survival rate (%) of grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) fingerlings in the lower part of Wadi El-Rayan Lake (WRL) located in Al-Fayoum Governorate, Egypt. This study involved two experiments. The first experiment involved nursing and rearing grey mullet fingerlings in net enclosures (NE-CWT) and an earthen pond for 40 days before releasing them into the WRL. In the second experiment, three groups were studied before being released into the WRL: the first group underwent a nursing experiment (nursing for 40 days for acclimatization), the second group underwent grow out rearing for 334 days, and the third group (control group, continued) was released directly into the WRL, without extended rearing, acclimatization, or CWT recovery. During the first experiment, the growth performance, feed utilization, and survival rates of M. cephalus fingerlings were recorded. Throughout the second experiment, the fishermen collected monthly samples from the WRL to monitor the growth and survival rates of M. cephalus. The data revealed that fish temporarily held in NE-CWT had significantly higher (P< 0.05) final body weight, total weight gain, specific growth rate, and survival rate. Growth trends were similar for the fish temporarily held in EP-CWT. These findings emphasized the significance of short-term rearing and acclimation prior to release for improving the performance parameters of mullet seed compared to direct release into the lake. The study results can be used to increase the effectiveness of future grey mullet (M. cephalus) stockings in the Egyptian lakes. The current research work provided insights into the expression patterns of key genes in the BPG axis of Mugil cephalus females, highlighting differences between wild and captive environments during the spawning season. The investigated genes include Kiss2, Gpr54, Gnrh1, and Drd2 in the brain and ovary, as well as Lhβ, Fshβ, and Slα in the pituitary and ovary. The finding indicated that the relative expression of all examined genes is elevated in mature females compared to immature ones across all examined tissues (brain, pituitary, and ovary). The observation that the expressions of the examined genes in wild females of M. cephalus are highly correlated, either directly or inversely, with their counterparts in captive females, indicated a connection between gene expression patterns and the different environments (wild vs. captive). The Plio-Pleistocene Kazusa Group, situated in the middle and upper basin of the Tama River in Northwestern Tokyo, Japan is known to have yielded various vertebrates, including both terrestrial and marine mammals as well as chondrichthyan fishes. Recently, osteichthyan fish fossils have been discovered from this stratum. Notably, marine fish fossils have been discovered in the Oyabe, Hirayama, Komiya, Oyamada, and Renkoji formations of Kazusa Group. Of these formations, the Oyabe Formation has revealed Clupeiformes and the first East Asian fossils of the Plotosidae, while the Renkoji Formation has yielded Clupeiformes, Clupeidae, Engraulidae, and the second recorded occurrence of the Mugilidae in Japan. These recent discoveries suggest that the Kazusa Group in Northwestern Tokyo has the potential to be a significant stratum for the study of Quaternary marine fossil osteichthyan fishes. Integrative studies on intraspecific differences of digestive enzymes, energy reserves, and morphological/somatic traits in juveniles and adults of estuarine-dependent marine fish while inhabiting inside a coastal lagoon are lacking. This study was carried on juveniles and adults of Mugil liza Valenciennes, 1836 inhabiting inside Mar Chiquita Coastal Lagoon (Argentina). Both stages exhibited amylase, maltase, sucrase, lipase, trypsin, and aminopeptidase-N activities in the intestine, which were active over a wide range of pH and temperatures and exhibited Michaelis–Menten kinetics. Adults exhibited higher intestinal coefficient (31%), higher amylase (32%), and lower maltase (82%) and lipase activities (38%). Glycogen concentration in liver and muscle was similar, while free glucose concentration was higher in adults (772% and 400%, respectively). In adults, retroperitoneal fat (absent in juveniles) constituted the main triglycerides (TAG) storage site, while TAG concentration in liver and muscle was lower (86% and 80%, respectively) than that in juveniles. No differences were found in protein concentration in any storage organ. The results show that juveniles and adults exhibit a digestive and metabolic profile at the biochemical level and intraspecific differences in key components of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism that could support preparation for reproductive migration of adults outside the coastal lagoon. Fishes of the Mugilidae family are poorly known from a taxonomic perspective, largely because of their conservative morphology. In this paper, we aim to fill the knowledge gap and data deficiency regarding the genetic diversity of mullets occurring in southern peninsular India. A comprehensive mitochondrial phylogeny based on 238 COI sequences (78 newly generated) and three species delimitation methods (ASAP, RESL, and ABGD) confirmed the presence of 21 species of mullets within eight genera in southern peninsular India. These include one species each under the genera Rhinomugil Gill 1863, Minimugil Durand, Chen, Shen, Fu, and Borsa, 2012, Plicomugil Schultz 1953, and Ellochelon Whitley 1930; seven species of Planiliza Whitley 1945; four species of Crenimugil Schultz 1946; four species of Osteomugil Luther 1982; and two species of the "Mugil cephalus Linnaeus 1758" complex—though with uncertainty regarding the exact geographic origin of one of the two species of the "Mugil cephalus" complex and one species phylogenetically close to Planiliza subviridis (Valenciennes 1836). We provide an overview of the specific geographical regions in southern peninsular India, and "species groups", which require future research using an integrative approach, so as to unravel the true extent of mullet diversity and their distribution in the region. To understand the microbiome composition and interplay among bacterial communities in different compartments of a coupled freshwater aquaponics system growing flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) and lettuces (Lactuca sativa), 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing of the V3–V4 region was analysed from each compartment (fish intestine, water from the sedimentation tank, bioballs from the biological filter, water and biofilm from the hydroponic unit, and lettuce roots). The bacterial communities of each sample group showed a stable diversity during all the trial, except for the fish gut microbiota, which displayed lower alpha diversity values. Regarding beta diversity, the structure of bacterial communities belonging to the biofilm adhering to the hydroponic tank walls, bioballs, and lettuce roots resembled each other (weighted and unweighted UniFrac distances), while bacteria from water samples also clustered together. However, both of the above-mentioned bacterial communities did not resemble those of fish gut. We found a low or almost null number of shared Amplicon Sequence Variants (ASVs) among sampled groups which indicated that each compartment worked as an independent microbiome. Regarding fish health and food safety, the microbiome profile did not reveal neither fish pathogens nor bacterial species potentially pathogenic for food health, highlighting the safety of this sustainable food production system. Simple Summary: The use of functional feeds in aquaculture is currently increasing. In this study, we investigated the impact of a diet containing Chlorella fusca and ethanol-inactivated Vibrio proteolyticus in Chelon labrosus. After 90 days of feeding, we assessed how this diet affected the fish's gut microbiota and gene expression related to metabolism, stress, and the immune system. We also tested the immune response after submitting fish to challenges with Aeromonas hydrophila and polyinosinic–polycytidylic acid (poly I:C). Results showed that the combined dietary administration influenced the microbial community in the fish's intestines, but it did not change the way these microorganisms functioned. In terms of gene expression, we observed significant variations in several genes in different fish organs from fish fed the combination of microalgae and probiotics. Notably, the combined diet seemed to enhance the fish's ability to regulate stress and immune-related genes, suggesting that it could improve their resistance to stress and infections. Overall, the present study sheds light on how this diet affects both the gut microbiota and gene expression in C. labrosus, potentially benefiting their health and immune response. The effects on intestinal microbiota and the transcription of genes related to metabolism, stress, and the immune system were investigated after 90 days of feeding. Additionally, the fish were challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila and polyinosinic–polycytidylic acid (poly I:C) to evaluate the immune response. Microbiota analysis revealed no significant differences in alpha and beta diversity between the anterior and posterior intestinal sections of fish fed the control (CT) and CVP diets. The dominant genera varied between the groups; Pseudomonas and Brevinema were most abundant in the CVP group, whereas Brevinema, Cetobacterium, and Pseudomonas were predominant in the CT group. However, microbial functionality remained unaltered. Gene expression analysis indicated notable changes in hif3α, mhcII, abcb1, mx, and tnfα genes in different fish organs on the CVP diet. In the head kidney, gene expression variations were observed following challenges with A. hydrophila or poly I:C, with higher peak values seen in fish injected with poly I:C. Moreover, c3 mRNA levels were significantly up-regulated in the CVP group 72 h post-A. hydrophila challenge. To conclude, incorporating C. fusca with V. proteolyticus in C. labrosus diet affected the microbial species composition in the intestine while preserving its functionality. Mugil cephalus Linnaeus, 1758 is a teleost fish widely distributed in coastal waters that plays an important role in commercial fisheries. In the present study, the complete mitogenome of M. cephalus from the Yellow Sea, China, was sequenced using Illumina Novaseq sequencing. The mitogenome of the M. cephalus was 16,744 bases in length (GenBank accession No. ON262567) including 2 rRNA genes, 22 tRNA genes, 13 protein-coding genes and a D-loop control region. The overall base composition of the genome was 28.2% A, 29.5% C, 26.9% T, and 15.4% G. The analysis of genetic similarity and phylogenetic relationship of M. cephalus from different geographic regions of the world indicated that the species from the Yellow Sea was most similar to NWP1 which is one of the three cryptic species of M. cephalus in Northwestern Pacific. Identifying the breeding grounds of fishes is crucial for the sustainable management of fisheries resources. The present study is aimed at identifying the potential breeding ground of Mugil cephalus along the estuary of the North Mumbai coast. A total of 1197 specimens of M. cephalus, including 546 eggs, 271 larvae, 235 juveniles, and 235 adults, were collected from four sampling stations in the Karanja estuary between January to October 2022. Water quality parameters, plankton dynamics in the estuary, and the reproductive and feeding biology of M. cephalus were also examined. The eggs, larvae, juveniles, and adults were identified using traditional morpho-meristic and DNA barcoding techniques. The results revealed a potential spawning ground of M. cephalus in the Karanja estuary. The results of reproductive biology also confirmed the occurrence of matured fishes during May–July. The abundance of eggs and larvae at the estuary's mouth and the presence of juveniles and mature individuals of M. cephalus dominantly in the Karanja estuary from May to July infer the presence of a spawning site. It is also recorded that M. cephalus spawn in higher salinity (35 ppt) and seawater temperature (33 °C) where the hatching of offspring takes place successfully. This study emphasizes the significance of DNA barcoding in guiding routine monitoring surveys and demonstrates its usefulness when combined with these techniques in identifying fish spawning grounds. This review examines the published literature on the distribution and species richness of the family Mugilidae around six continents as well as their phylogenetic relationships in a time‐calibrated tree. Three mugilid species‐rich regions were identified globally, namely the Coral Triangle, southern Asia and southern Africa, all of which have between 16 and 18 morphologically recognized species. Two of the species hotspots are tropical, and only southern Africa incorporates temperate waters. The centre of mugilid evolution and then global dispersion appears to be located in the tropical waters of the Indo‐Pacific. Speciation within the family was promoted mainly by plate tectonics, eustatic sea‐level changes, tropical climate and high habitat diversity within this region. The number of these tropical species that radiated out to the coastal waters of Africa and America was clearly less than the number that remained in the central Indo‐Pacific region. Nonetheless, access by tropical mugilid species was greater to Africa than the Americas because of the direct tropical and subtropical coastal connectivity to the former continent. This enabled more tropical mugilids to reach Africa than America, with the latter probably relying on Palaeocene "island hopping" or "rafting" to move eastwards across the Pacific Ocean. In addition, tropical mugilids were able to access warm western and central African coastal waters from the Pacific prior to the closure of the Tethys Sea gap in the eastern Mediterranean and prior to the development of the cool Benguela Current upwelling off the southwest African coast, and from America through at least two transatlantic rafting events. Totoaba macdonaldi is an endangered endemic fish of the Gulf of California. Overexploitation resulted in the Mexican government banning the fishing of this species in 1975, and it being listed as endangered. However, the species is still subject to illegal fishing. Despite its conservation status, little is known about totoaba biology. The present study aimed to implement, for the first time, a metabarcoding protocol to describe the totoaba diet. Four wild totoaba individuals, seized by Mexican law enforcement agents, were dissected, and their stomach contents were collected. Three representative amplicon libraries were generated for cephalopods, chordates, and eukaryotes. After sequencing, 18 different taxa were identified, of which 11 species were recognized as prey. The totoaba were found to have consumed Pacific anchovy (Cetengraulis mysticetus), flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus), bigeye croaker (Micropogonias megalops), northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax), ocean whitefish (Caulolatilus princeps), milkfish (Chanos chanos), and Pacific sardine (Sardinops sagax). Members of the Euphausiidae family (krill) were also identified. This study identified up to four times more species in much fewer samples than previous studies based on morphological recognition, thus confirming metabarcoding as an effective method for studying the feeding habits of this species and one providing the tools required for further analysis of the totoaba diet. The flathead gray mullet (Mugil cephalus L.) is a cosmopolitan fish that lives in warm and temperate zones over 42°N-42°S. It is a key fish species for industrial fishing off coastal Taiwan. Gray mullets enter the coastal waters of the southeastern Taiwan Strait (22°N-25°N) to spawn in winter and feed in the coastal and tidal waters of China (25°N-30°N). From 1986 to 2010, the annual catch of gray mullet decreased substantially and remained low. Although the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and El Niño-Southern Oscillation are recognized to affect gray mullet migration, the increase in sea surface temperature may be the main cause of the aforementioned decrease. We explored how weather changes affect fishing conditions and patterns at the gray mullet fishing grounds in Taiwan's coastal areas. Because of the decrease in gray mullet catches, the most common method for catching gray mullet in Taiwan's coastal areas between 1990 and 2010 was the use of drift or trawl nets instead of two-boat purse-seiner fleets. Since 2012, purse-seiner fleets have become the most common method for catching gray mullet. This trend indicates that the local fishing industry is adapting to changing environmental conditions. Rare earth elements are essential for modern life, although they are also classified as emerging pollutants. Currently, fish studies on these elements are very limited in general, but, with regard to the Caspian Sea, there is no reference to them at all. For this reason, our objective was to determine the concentrations of these elements in the golden grey mullet (Chelon auratus) and to contrast its bioaccumulation patterns with those of arsenic, cadmium, mercury and lead. For that purpose, 20 fish were caught in the southern part of the Caspian Sea. Heavy rare earth element concentrations were higher than light ones and the terbium levels were very high, probably due to anthropogenic contamination. The intestine tissue gave the highest concentrations, which could be indicative of a very low gastrointestinal absorption. Vibrio alginolyticus, Vibrio chlorea, and Enterococcus cloacae were the main bacterial pathogens investigated during recurrent episodes of mortalities among farmed flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) in the Bahar El-Baqar area, Sharqia governorate, Egypt, during the summer season in 2021. Nevertheless, the contamination of water with heavy metals was evaluated. In this study, a total number of sixty moribund and freshly dead Mugil cephalus were examined clinically and upon post-mortem. Then, the bacterial isolates were subjected to bacteriological phenotypic examination, 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and antibiotic sensitivity testing. Histopathological screening and the immunity response of naturally infected M. cephalus were also implemented. In areas where bacterial strains were recovered in a high percentage, water contamination with Cu, Fe, and Ni was higher than the permissible limit. The results showed a high similarity (99–100%) to Vibrio and E. cloacae strains using phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA. Most isolates exhibited sensitivity to florfenicol, ciprofloxacin, and norfloxacin, while they were resistant to erythromycin and amoxicillin. Hemorrhage, oedema, hemosiderosis, and melanomacrophage activation in most affected tissues of infected M. cephalus were detected by light microscopy. Nevertheless, higher levels of AST and ALT, as well as serum inflammatory markers, CRP, and lysozyme activity, were shown in infected fish. There were higher MDA levels, along with a reduction of GSH, SOD, and catalase, in the gills and brain of infected M. cephalus, compared to the control fish. Our obtained data confirmed the high prevalence of Vibrio serovars and E. cloacae in infected grey mullets, describing their histopathological alterations, higher inflammatory response, and oxidative stress impact. These results could be useful indicators for understanding the pathogenesis of these pathogens in correlation with water parameter deterioration. Changes in an erythrocyte count, as well as erythropoiesis in hematopoietic tissue, were studied in the golden grey mullet (Chelon auratus Risso, 1810) over an annual cycle. Fish capture and delivery to the laboratory were provided at a monthly basis. The content of immature erythroid forms (erythroblasts, basophilic and polychromatophilic normoblasts) was counted in the head kidney (pronephros) and circulating blood. It was found that erythropoiesis in C. auratus proceeds irregularly. The active production of erythroid mass is mainly confined to the post-spawning period, as evidenced by an increase in the content of immature erythroid forms in the head kidney and blood. This coincides with an overall increase in the number of red blood cells (RBCs) in the circulatory system and indicates a shift in the erythrocyte balance toward RBC production. Outside the pre-spawning period, the processes are opposite. It is assumed that the above findings are due to peculiar organization of the RBC system in Ch. auratus, which excludes the regular production of erythropoietin in the kidneys. The consumption of raw fish has rapidly increased in recent years, but being a highly perishable product, it is characterised by a very short microbiological shelf life. High hydrostatic pressure (HPP) processing is a nonthermal technology has emerged recently as a promising alternative to thermal processing for food pasteurization capable of maintaining fresh-like characteristics and nutritional value. However, the induced changes in product quality should be assessed carefully. The present research aimed to investigate the effect of HPP on different seafood products, namely grey mullet, tiger prawn and rose shrimp, intended for raw consumption. Three pressure levels (400, 500 and 600 MPa) were applied for 10 min. During refrigerated storage, microbiological quality, chemical parameters, colour and texture and fat oxidation were analysed. Results showed that the application of lower pressure was able to inactivate E. coli, pseudomonas and/or positive coagulase staphylococci; however, they were able to recover during storage. In addition, the application of 600-MPa pressure extended the microbiological shelf life by up to 30 days. For all samples, general whitening occurred while the texture was affected in a different way for the three considered species. This study was carried out on the comparative evaluation of morphometric characteristics of Mullet species to discriminate them. Several resulting morphometric variables were considered important for species differentiation. The mean, range and coefficient of variance for the 34 morphometric characters for specimen's relationship are greater values have been marked with FL/SD, LFIRD/SD, LSECD/SD and SNLANL/SD. The discriminant analysis generated 4 roots, the former exhibiting 92.11% of the total variation and the latter two explaining 96.46% of the total variation. A higher modal value for rays on the pelvic fin (15 rays) was observed in E. vaigiensis, whereas the lower value (11 rays) was observed in P. tade. In this study, we optimized a simple method of cryopreservation for Mugil cephalus sperm based on post-thaw motility and viability. A series of experiments were conducted by changing the extender, cryoprotectant and freezing height above the liquid nitrogen (LN) surface. First, we carried out the cryopreservation using the extender V2E and cryoprotective agents (CPAs) namely, propylene glycol (PG), methanol (MeOH), glycerol (GLY), ethylene glycol (EG), dimethylsulfoxide (Me2SO) and dimethylacetamide (DMA) at a final concentration of 5% and 10%. We found that 10% of GLY, EG and Me2SO were more suitable compared to other CPAs. Then, different freezing heights (6, 8, 10 and 12 cm) above the LN surface were experimented with extender V2E and optimized CPAs. Then, 0.3 M of glucose, sucrose and trehalose were tested as extender along with optimized CPAs and freezing height. Additionally, the effect of fast-rate freezing and storage days (7, 30 and 180) on post-thaw sperm quality was documented using the factors optimized in earlier experiments. For all experiments, the fresh sperm was diluted at a ratio of 1:1 with cryomedium (CPA + extender), loaded into cryovials (2.0 mL) and frozen. The cryopreserved sperm was thawed at 30 °C for 90–120 s and their quality was evaluated. Among the experimented factors, sperm diluted in cryomedium (0.3 M glucose + 10% EG) and frozen at 4 cm above the LN surface registered significantly (P < 0.05) highest post-thaw motility (73 ± 2%) and (71 ± 1%) viability. Fast-rate freezing has resulted in lower (about 30%) post-thaw motility and viability of sperm. The storage days (7, 30 and 180) did not have a significant effect on post-thaw sperm quality. Overall results show that using the factors optimized through this study, high-quality sperm can be obtained after cryopreservation. • The cryomedium composed of 0.3 M glucose and 10% of EG was more effective in sustaining higher sperm quality after cryopreservation. • The post-thaw sperm quality obtained from non-programmable freezing method was comparable with programmable freezing. • No difference was found in post-thaw sperm quality after 7, 30 and 180 days of storage in LN (−196 °C). Morphological asymmetry was analysed in two marine fish species Acanthopagrus arabicus and Planiliza klunzingeri, in brackish and freshwater habitats in southern Iraq. For both species, specimens from the Shatt al-Arab River and Shatt al-Basrah Canal exhibited greater asymmetry values for snout length. In both locations examined, the levels of asymmetry of the physical traits increased as the fish grew. There is a growing interest in examining of economically important fish species with excellent mariculture potentials in lagoons of coastal states. Members of the family Mugilidae, which are permanent residents in Lagos Lagoon form a mainstay of fish protein source and are potential candidates for such investigations. Lengthfrequency distribution, length-weight relationship, condition factor and molecular characteristics of two grey mullets, Mugil cephalus and Liza falcipinnis were investigated in Lagos Lagoon. A total of 52 samples (26 specimens of each species) of the fish were collected from the Lagos Lagoon. The standard length ranged from 10.0 - 19.2 cm and 12.0 - 18.2 cm for M. cephalus and L. falcipinnis respectively, with corresponding weights of 13.90 - 105.00 g and 36.00-129.00 g respectively. It is concluded that the growth pattern of the species showed negative allometric, b = 0.32 and 0.65 respectively. Simple Summary: Sustainable aquaculture expansion will be crucial for the food security of a growing population expected to reach ~10 billion by 2050. Larval rearing is one of the most complex phases of marine aquaculture due to the need for additional facilities and labor to produce zooplankton to feed the larvae. Therefore, establishing adequate protocols for each species to shift from the live to the inert feed is crucial for more suitable management and profitability of the production. For those reasons, three different co-feeding protocols, A100 (2 initial Artemia sp. mL−1 day−1), A50 (1 initial Artemia sp. mL−1 day−1), and A0 (0 Artemia sp. mL−1 day−1, only rotifers administered as live feed), were evaluated from 22 to 36 days post-hatching (dph) in the weaning of the flathead grey mullet, a promising species for sustainable aquaculture diversification. Survival, growth, biochemical composition, and gene expression of digestive enzymes and growth hormones were assessed. The A0 treatment performed better in survival, while the A100 treatment was the best for growth performance. The expression of the different genes evaluated did not show differences between treatments. In conclusion, rotifers should be maintained until 30–32 dph (total larval length of at least 10 mm) to maximize survival, while Artemia sp. supply is recommended from 26 to 29 dph (total larval length of 8 to 9 mm) to improve larval growth and minimize size dispersion. The sustainable expansion of aquaculture relies on a sufficient supply of eggs and larvae, which are the first step of life cycle management. However, marine fish larval rearing generally depends on live feed production, which needs additional facilities and labor. The flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus), a promising species for aquaculture diversification, has a precocious digestive system development, supporting the feasibility of early weaning strategies. For these reasons, this study evaluated survival, growth, proximate and fatty acid composition, and gene expression of Mugil cephalus larvae reared under three different weaning protocols. Three co-feeding treatments, two with different Artemia sp. concentrations (A100 and A50, 2 and 1 Artemia sp. mL−1 day−1, respectively) and one with only rotifers administered as live feed along the feeding trial (A0), were assessed from 22 to 36 days post-hatching (dph). The A0 treatment performed better in survival (64.79 ± 7.40%) than the A100 protocol (32.46 ± 12.82%). In contrast, the larvae of the A100 treatment presented significantly higher final length (15.51 ± 0.86 mm) than those of the A0 treatment (12.19 ± 1.45 mm) and higher final weight (41.28 ± 1.48 mg) than those of the A50 and A0 treatments (31.23 ± 3.65 mg and 24.03 ± 7.99 mg, respectively). On the other hand, the expression of digestive enzyme- and somatotropic factor-related genes did not show differences between treatments. The present results support the convenience of treatment A0 in maximizing survival, as rotifers should be maintained until 30–32 dph (until a total larval length of at least 10 mm). In recent years, flathead grey mullets (Mugil cephalus) cultured in Eilat (Israel) have been highly affected by Vibrio harveyi, showing neurological signs such as uncoordinated circular swimming followed by high mortality rates. Despite the advances in and different approaches to control vibriosis associated with Vibrio harveyi, including commercial vaccines, most of them have not succeeded in long-term protection. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness, long-term protection, and antibody production of three vaccine preparations: heat-killed bacteria (HKB), membrane proteins denaturation (BME PROT), and internal proteins (INT PROT) developed specifically against Vibrio harveyi for grey mullets. Our results show that fish immunized with heat-killed bacteria emulsified with adjuvant presented the most effective and long-lasting protection against the bacterium, and a cross-protection against other bacteria from the harveyi clade. Three juvenile Atlantic tripletail Lobotes surinamensis caught opportunistically in Charleston Harbor (South Carolina, USA) and maintained in captivity for over three months displayed an altered swimming behavior. While no direct causation can be demonstrated herein, fish were infected in their brain by strigeid trematode larvae (metacercariae) of Cardiocephaloides medioconiger, which were identified via ITS2 and 28S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing. Histology showed nonencysted metacercariae within the brain ventricle between the optic tectum and tegmentum, causing distortion of tegmental parenchyma. Aggregates of mononuclear inflammatory cells were in the ventricle adjacent to metacercariae. Metacercarial infection by Cardiocephaloides medioconiger has been reported from the brain and eyes of only two other fish species from the northern US Atlantic coast: the grey mullet Mugil cephalus and silverside Menidia menidia, but this identification is problematic and needs molecular verification. Atlantic tripletail is a new report as a second intermediate host for C. medioconiger and South Carolina is a new locality. The mullet species under the family Mugilidae, considered to be a commercially important teleost, are mostly found in coastal waters throughout the world, distributed in tropical, subtropical and temperate areas. In terms of taxonomic study, biogeography and distribution pattern of mullets remain unclear due to difficulty in separating the species based on morphological characters. Thus, there is a need to study the taxonomy of Mugilidae. Further, phylogeny of family Mugilidae also exceptionally obscure at inter and intraspecific levels challenges exist in species under the family. The present study, has brought a new observation in form of temporary black dots (patrial pigmentation abnormality), especially in three species of Mugilidae were observed. Sometimes these pigmentation pattern can lead to misidentification or identification as different species. Further, DNA Barcoding (COI gene) and morpho-meristic analysis performed to resolve the ambiguity in the species identification, confirmed these species as Mugil cephalus, Planiliza sp., Osteomugil perusii. Present study will help to avoid the misidentification of species, which will assist biologists and managers for acquiring more information their distribution and life history pattern. Simple Summary: Red sea bream iridovirus (RSIV) can infect more than 30 species of farmed fish and has been reported in several Asian countries. Previous studies have reported the detection of RSIV in flathead grey mullets (Mugil cephalus), but research on pathogenicity, histopathological lesions, viral shedding, and the effects of infected fish on other species is very limited. In this study, we analyzed pathogenicity and viral dynamics in flathead grey mullets through immersion infection, simulating natural conditions of RSIV, and confirmed the risk of horizontal transmission to other fish species through cohabitation. Our data verify that RSIV is pathogenic to flathead grey mullets and that there is a potential for spreading the disease from fish farms to other species. Additionally, our findings revealed a high correlation between viral load and histopathological lesions in fish. Red sea bream iridovirus (RSIV) causes significant economic losses in the aquaculture industry. We analyzed the pathogenicity of RSIV in flathead grey mullets (Mugil cephalus), the correlation of histopathological lesions, and interspecies horizontal transmission, through immersion infection and cohabitation challenges. Flathead grey mullets, which were challenged by immersion infection, exhibited mortality at 14 and 24 days after RSIV exposure. Viral shedding in seawater peaked 2–3 days before or after the observed mortality. Specific lesions of RSIV were observed in the spleen and kidney, and the correlation between histopathological grade and viral load was the highest in the spleen. In a cohabitation challenge, flathead grey mullets were the donors, and healthy rock bream, red sea bream, and flathead grey mullets were the recipients. Viral shedding in seawater was the highest in flathead grey mullet and rock bream at 25 °C, with 106.0 RSIV copies L/g at 14 dpi. No mortality was observed in any group challenged at 15 °C, and no RSIV was detected in seawater after 30 dpi. The virus shed from RSIV-infected flathead grey mullets caused horizontal transmission through seawater. Simple Summary: Red sea bream iridovirus (RSIV) has been reported to be susceptible to various marine fish species in Asian countries such as South Korea, and it causes significant economic losses due to massive mortalities in rock bream (Oplegnathus fasciatus) in particular. However, studies on the impact of the virus shed from RSIV-infected rock bream on other fish species are limited. Here, we investigated the dynamics of the virus by simulating the natural conditions of RSIV infection in rock bream and examining its release into seawater and the risk of horizontal transmission through cohabitation with other fish species. Our data demonstrated that the virus shed from RSIV-infected rock bream caused high mortality rates in surrounding fish species through horizontal transmission. Our findings suggest the potential for RSIV-infected rock bream in farms to spread the disease to neighboring farms. Additionally, our results demonstrated a high correlation between RSIV load and viral shedding ratio in rock breams, as well as between RSIV load and histopathological infection grades. Red sea bream iridovirus (RSIV) causes significant economic losses in aquaculture. Here, we analyzed the pathogenicity, viral shedding, and transmission dynamics of RSIV in rock bream (Oplegnathus fasciatus) by employing immersion infection and cohabitation challenge models. Rock bream challenged by immersion exposure exhibited 100% mortality within 35 days post RSIV exposure, indicating that the viral shedding in seawater peaked after mortality. At 25 °C, a positive correlation between the viral loads within infected rock bream and virus shedding into the seawater was observed. Specific RSIV lesions were observed in the spleen and kidney of the infected rock bream, and the viral load in the spleen had the highest correlation with the histopathological grade. A cohabitation challenge mimicking the natural transmission conditions was performed to assess the virus transmission and determine the pathogenicity and viral load. The RSIV-infected rock breams (donors) were cohabited with uninfected rock bream, red sea bream (Pagrus major), and flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) (recipients) at both 25 °C and 15 °C. In the cohabitation challenge group maintained at 15 °C, no mortality was observed across all experimental groups. However, RSIV was detected in both seawater and the recipient fish.
