1. Enhancing thermoelectric properties of Ca3Co4O9 ceramics through oscillatory pressure sintering

Abstract

Oscillatory Pressure Sintering (OPS) has been demonstrated to be a favorable manufacturing approach for the control of fine and uniform distribution of grains in various ceramic systems, which can lead to enhanced densification and thus improved physical and mechanical properties. In this study, OPS was utilized to prepare pure Ca3Co4O9 thermoelectric material. The results show that the electrical properties and thermoelectric properties of Ca3Co4O9 prepared by OPS are superior to those of samples sintered by conventional hot pressing (HP) without oscillation. This may be attributed to the better alignment of plate-like grains in the OPS samples, which increase electrical conductivity, and also the higher density of grain boundaries that enhance the phonon scattering and, thus, the reduction of thermal conductivity. This study suggests that a straightforward oscillatory pressure sintering approach can be utilized to obtain high-quality and high-performance thermoelectric materials without the need for doping, templating, or high-temperature sintering.

2. Effect of Centrifugal Force on Power Output of a Spin-Coated Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride-Trifluoroethylene)-Based Piezoelectric Nanogenerator.

Abstract

While poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) film is an excellent piezoelectric material for mechanical energy harvesting, the piezoelectric output varies considerably with the spin coating conditions. Herein, we reported a systematic evaluation of the structural, electrical, mechanical, and microstructural properties of spin-coated P(VDF-TrFE) films obtained at various distances from the center, as well as under different rotational speeds. With increasing distance, the remnant polarization, dielectric constant, and crystallinity of the films increased, which resulted in enhanced piezoelectric power at the largest distance. With increasing rotational speed, the remnant polarization, dielectric constant, and crystallinity of the films initially increased and then decreased, while the Young's modulus continuously increased. This resulted in an enhanced piezoelectric power at a given rotational speed. The piezoelectric power is proportional to the remnant polarization and inversely proportional to the Young's modulus. The highest (2.1 mW) and lowest (0.5 mW) instantaneous powers were obtained at the largest (1.09 μC/cm2·GPa−1) and smallest (0.60 μC/cm2·GPa−1) value of remnant polarization over Young's modulus, respectively. We explain these behaviors in terms of the centrifugal force-induced shear stress and grain alignment, as well as the thickness-dependent β-phase crystallization and confinement. This work implies that the spin coating conditions of distance and rotational speed should be optimized for the enhanced power output of spin-coated P(VDF-TrFE)-based piezoelectric nanogenerators. Abstract

Cerium‐doped lutetium oxyorthosilicate (Lu2SiO5:Ce, LSO:Ce) slurry with 35 vol.% solid content and viscosity of 70 mPa ·$ \cdot $s (at a shear rate of 4 s–1) was prepared via a 24‐h ball milling for the powder calcined at 1200°C and adding ammonium polyacrylate of 0.2 wt.%. Textured LSO:Ce ceramics were fabricated via slip casting in a vertical magnetic field and subsequently pressureless sintering of 1650°C and hot isostatic pressing. The maximum Lotgering factor f and relative density of the textured ceramics were 0.48% and 98.8%, respectively. Effects of grain size, dispersant, viscosity of slurry, and magnetic flux density on the grain orientation of LSO:Ce ceramics were systematically investigated. Based on the spatial state of grains, we proposed the rotation rule that LSO:Ce grains with or without space constraints in the slurry align along a and c‐axis under the induction of a strong magnetic field. Abstract

Grain alignment is a key factor that determines the performance of a superconducting bulk. In this study, the spark plasma texturing (SPT) technique was used to fabricate a CaKFe 4 As 4 superconducting bulk. X-ray diffraction and electron backscatter diffraction revealed that the c -axes of the CaKFe 4 As 4 grains in the SPT bulk are aligned, demonstrating that the SPT technique is effective in achieving c -axis texture. In addition, chemical composition analysis showed that oxide impurities, which affect the grain boundary characteristics that determine the inter-grain critical current density (J c), are randomly distributed in the SPT bulk. Magnetization measurements showed high J c values of the SPT bulk, reaching 127 kA cm−2 and 26 kA cm−2 at 4.2 K under a self-field and magnetic field of 5 T, respectively. These results suggest that the SPT technique is a promising approach for obtaining a high-performance superconducting bulk material for high-field applications. • A dense and c -axis textured CaKFe 4 As 4 superconducting bulk was fabricated by the spark plasma texturing technique. • The CaKFe 4 As 4 bulk has a high critical current density comparable to the highest value reported for iron-based bulks. • Spark plasma texturing modified grain orientation and oxygen distribution, resulting in the improved performance. Abstract

In organic donor-acceptor systems, ultrafast interfacial charge transfer (CT), charge separation (CS), and charge recombination (CR) are key determinants of the overall performance of photovoltaic devices. However, a profound understanding of these photophysical processes at device interfaces remains superficial, creating a major bottleneck that circumvents advancements and the optimization of these solar cells. Here, results from time-resolved laser spectroscopy and high-resolution electron microscopy are examined to provide the fundamental information necessary to fabricate and optimize organic solar cell devices. In real time, CT and CS are monitored at the interface between three fullerene acceptors (FAs) (PC71BM, PC61BM, and IC60BA) and the PTB7-Th donor polymer. Femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) data demonstrates that photoinduced electron transfer from the PTB7-Th polymer to each FA occurs on the sub-picosecond time scale, leading to the formation of long-lived radical ions. It is also found that the power conversion efficiency improves from 2% in IC60BA-based solar cells to >9% in PC71BM-based devices, in support of our time-resolved results. The insights reported in this manuscript provide a clear understanding of the key variables involved at the device interface, paving the way for the exploitation of efficient CS and subsequently improving the photoconversion efficiency. Abstract

To enhance the degree of c-axis alignment of hot-deformed Nd-Fe-B magnets, a dynamic loading process was applied during the hot deformation process with a total thickness reduction of 75%. The effects of processing temperature on magnetic properties and texture alignment were analyzed based on the magnetic properties measurement and microstructure characterization. The extent of c-axis alignment calculated by Half-Gaussian model shows that the orientation deviation decreased to 7.9° when processed at 675 °C. This corresponds to a remanence of 1.49 T and a high maximum energy product (BH) max of 422 kJ/m 3 . The activation energy of grain growth during hot deformation is estimated to be 125.8 ± 0.2 kJ/mol. The coercivity-grain size relationship of the samples shows an increase in coercivity with decreased grain size, whose slope is consistent with a previous report. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The application of a high magnetic field is capable of inducing the formation of aligned equiaxed grains in alloys during directional solidification. The alignment and refinement of the grains is enhanced as the magnetic field intensity increases. Abstract

Surfactant-assisted ball milling (SABM) has been shown to be a promising method for preparing rare earth-transition metal (RE-TM) nanoflakes and nanoparticles. In this work, we prepared SmCo 5 nanoflakes by SABM at low temperature, and 2-methyl pentane and trioctylamine were specially selected as solvent and surfactant, respectively, due to their low melting points. The effects of milling temperature on the morphology, microstructure and magnetic performance of SmCo 5 nanoflakes were investigated systematically. Comparing with the samples milled at room temperature, the SmCo 5 nanoflakes prepared at low temperature displayed more homogeneous morphology and lower oxygen content. Remarkably, better crystallinity, better grain alignment and larger remanence ratio were shown in the samples milled at low temperature, which resulted from the distinct microstructure caused by low milling temperature. The differences in structural evolution between the SmCo 5 nanoflakes milled at room temperature and low temperature, including the formation of nanocrystalline, grain boundary sliding, grain rotation, et al., were discussed. It was found that lowering the temperature of SABM was a powerful method for the fabrication of RE-TM nanoflakes, which showed better hard magnetic properties and lower oxygen content. 19. Effect of intergranular phase segregation on magnetic properties of NdFeB magnet.

Abstract

The hot deformed magnets were produced by hot-pressing of the as-cast ingots of NdTbFeCoB, NdTbFeCoBCu and NdTbFeCoBAlCu alloys. The individual Cu addition decreased the melting temperature of the intergranular region phase from 606.5°C to 504.3°C leading to better wetting behaviour and easy rotation of magnetic grains during the hot deformation process and resulted in good magnetic properties. However, with Al addition, the intergranular composition was segregated into two phases and the Nd(Fe,Co,Al) phase was formed in addition to the Nd-rich phase at the interphase between grains during the hot deformation process. For this sample, grain alignment was poor and H, B and (BH) are 5.73 kOe, 5.75 kG and 9.94 MGOe respectively. The highest remanence and energy product are 7.25 kG and 13.65 MGOe respectively for the individual Cu added sample. It is suggested that the decrease in melting temperature of the intergranular phase leads to a better wetting behaviour to penetrate homogenously into the holes during hot deformation which resulted in the high density and the improvement of the magnetic properties. Abstract: Uniaxial hot-pressing was applied as an alternative way to further improve the grain connectivity of both un-doped and carbon doped MgB2/Nb/Monel wires. In this study, hot-pressing of 100MPa resulted in the improvement of the mass density, the critical current density, and the grain connectivity of the wires. However, this also caused additional critical current density anisotropy, which is associated with the texture of a- and b-axes oriented grains. In particular, the anisotropy factors of critical current density for the un-doped and the carbon doped conductors were estimated to be 2.6 and 1.7, respectively, under an external magnetic field of 14T. Abstract: The wear behaviour of textured silicon nitride (Si3N4) ceramics with aligned microstructures was analyzed under abrasive wear conditions. Dry reciprocating self-mated ball-on-flat wear tests were performed to study the influence of different microstructural plane/orientation combinations on the Si3N4 tribological behaviour. Textured materials showed superior wear resistance than non-textured reference Si3N4 for the whole range of loads and contact pressures, 5–50N and 1.7–3.6GPa, respectively, with an increase of about 70% for the maximum applied load. Within textured materials, the plane perpendicular to the extruding direction exhibited a 50% higher wear resistance (4×10−5 mm3 N−1 m−1) than the parallel plane where the elongated grains were aligned. The severe wear process involved debonding, fracture and debris formation mechanisms. The progress of this sequence depended on the particular microstructure of each plane/orientation combination. 22. Measurements of anisotropic thermopower of magnetically aligned YBa2Cu3O<f>7−δ</f> ceramics: evidence of successful texturing techniques

Aligned YBa2Cu3O7−δ ceramics have been obtained using a field of 1 T without being embedded in epoxy. Thermopower, XRD, and SEM are used to characterize the aligned ceramics. For the sample with δ=0.05, the thermopower exhibits a strong anisotropy. The ab-plane thermopower behaves distinctly from that along the c-axis. The ab-plane thermopower shows remarkable similarities to that along the b-axis in an untwinned single crystal. The magnitude and temperature dependence of the c-axis thermopower are almost identical to those of a twinned single crystal. For samples with larger oxygen deficiency, the anisotropy remains. These measurements indicate that these ceramics are well aligned along their crystallographic directions. This also makes available the anisotropic thermopower measurements of ceramic samples by aligning polycrystallites using magnetic forces. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

23. Growth of superconducting MgB2 thin films via postannealing techniques

Abstract

We report the effect of annealing on the superconductivity of MgB2 thin films as a function of the postannealing temperature in the range from 700 to 950 °C and of the postannealing time in the range from 30 to 120 min. On annealing at 900 °C for 30 min, we obtained the best-quality MgB2 films with a transition temperature of 39 K and a critical current density of ∼107 A/cm2. Using scanning electron microscopy, we also investigated the film growth mechanism. The samples annealed at higher temperatures showed larger grain sizes, well-aligned crystal structures with preferential orientation along the c-axis, and smooth surface morphologies. However, a longer annealing time prevented the alignment of grains and reduced superconductivity, indicating a strong interfacial reaction between the substrate and the MgB2 film. Abstract

We evaluated the effect of twisting on microstructure, critical current, and AC losses of Bi-2223 superconductor tapes. It was observed that grain size and grain alignment were reduced with decreasing twist pitch probably due to the formation of an irregular interface between Ag and filaments. The critical current of the tapes decreased with decreasing pitch. For the tape having a twist pitch of 10 mm, &ap;50% of the critical current was maintained compared to that of the non-twisted tape. The reduction of critical current is believed to be due to irregular interface, poor grain alignment, small grain size, and existence of second phases, etc. In addition, it was observed that AC losses of the tapes were reduced as the pitch decreased probably due to the combined effect of lower critical current and electrically decoupled filament of twisted tape. 25. Effect of Various Intermediate Deformation Techniques on Jc and Grain Texture for Ag/Bi-2223 Tapes.

Three Ag sheathed Bi-2223 multifilamentary tapes were produced by a processing method that consists of two sintering treatments with an intermediate deformation, involving sandwich rolling (SR), pressing (P), or normal rolling (NR). The magnetic field dependence of the critical current density Jc was measured with the magnetic field H applied parallel to both the ab plane ( H | ab) and the c-axis ( H | c) of the Bi-2223 grains. Experimental results show that Jc of the pressed (P) tape ( JcP) for both H | ab and H | c is about 1.5–1.8 times higher than that for the NR tape ( JcNR) and the SR tape, although JcSR is always larger than JcP. The ratio of JcSR/ JcNR for H | c increases rapidly with the applied magnetic field and reaches a maximum of about 12 at μ0 H ≥ 900 T. The calculated density of the pinning force F as a function of magnetic field shows that curves of F for SR, NR, and P tapes all have their maximum Fmax at different magnetic fields and the magnitudes of Fmax are also different from each other. The SR tape has the largest value of Fmax, while NR has the smallest. XRD analysis shows that an intermediate deformation can destroy the grain alignment, and the larger the deformation, the worse the grain texture will be. Our experimental results, however, clearly show that Jc for Bi-2223 multifilamentary tapes is independent of grain alignment. The significant differences in Jc for tapes processed using the three different intermediate deformation procedures are dependent on the density of the pinning force and cannot be attributed to the grain alignment. 26. Effects of Grain Alignment on Fabric Mechanical Properties.

Abstract

This study was designed to measure the effect of grain alignment on selected fabric physical and mechanical properties. Kawabata's Shear Tester and Pure Bending Tester were used to assess shear and bending properties of 19 apparel fabrics. Fabric samples were cut at six different grain alignment variations. Shear properties were more sensitive than bending properties to variations in grain alignment. Significant positive correlations were identified between tilt and shear stiffness and hysteresis measurements. Although bending modulus and hysteresis values were not significantly related to tilt, a trend toward decreased bending values with increased tilt angles was observed. Abstract

The Planck Catalogue of Galactic Cold Clumps (PGCC) contains over 13000 sources detected based on their cold dust signature. They are believed to consist of a mixture of quiescent, pre-stellar, and already star-forming objects. We extracted PGCC-type objects from cloud simulations and examined their physical and polarisation properties. The comparison with the PGCC catalogue helps to characterise the PGCC sample and provides valuable tests for numerical simulations of interstellar medium. We used several MHD snapshots to define the density field of our models. Sub-millimetre images of the surface brightness and polarisation were obtained with radiative transfer calculations. We examined the statistics of synthetic cold clump catalogues and examined the variations of the clump polarisation fraction p. The clump sizes, aspect ratios, and temperatures in the synthetic catalogue are similar to the PGCC. The fluxes and column densities are smaller by a factor of a few. Rather than with an increased dust opacity, this could be explained by increasing the average column density of the models by a factor of two to three, close to N(H2)= 10^22 cm-2. When the line of sight is parallel to the mean magnetic field, the polarisation fraction tends to increase towards the clump centres, contrary to observations. When the field is perpendicular, the polarisation fraction tends to decrease towards the clumps, but the drop in $p$ is small (e.g. from p~8% to p~7%). Magnetic field geometry reduces the polarisation fraction in the simulated clumps by only \Delta p~1% on average. The larger drop seen towards the actual PGCC clumps suggests some loss of grain alignment in the dense medium, such as predicted by the radiative torque mechanism. See DOI: 10.1039/c9ra02440a, [EN] The magnetic properties of SrFe12O19 nanocrystallites produced by hydrothermal synthesis and consolidated by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) were optimized by varying the compaction parameters: sintering time, sintering temperature, uniaxial pressure or pre-compaction in a magnetic field. Highly textured compacts with a high degree of crystallite alignment were produced. Qualitative and quantitative textural information was obtained based on X-ray diffraction pole figure measurements. The optimum sintering conditions, relating the degree of alignment and bulk magnetic properties, were identified based on the resulting magnetic properties. It was found that one must strike a balance between the degree of crystallite alignment for high saturation magnetisation and coercivity (Hc) to gain the highest energy product (BHmax). It was found that the coercive field drops when the crystallite alignment increases. This was particularly pronounced in the case of magnetically pre-aligned powders prior to SPS, where Hc and BHmax decreased as the pellets became increasingly textured. The best BHmax value of 29(4) kJ m−3 was found for the sample sintered at 950 °C for 2 minutes with an applied pressure of 100 MPa for a powder pre-aligned in an applied field of 0.55 T. Abstract

We have performed measurements of the magnetic field dependence of the critical current density J/sub c/ of Bi-2212/Ag round wire produced by isothermal melt processing. In contrast to the case for flat tape, there is very little dependence of J/sub c/ on on the direction of the magnetic field as it is rotated normal to the wire axis which is the direction of the nominal current flow. However, when the angle of the magnetic field direction is rotated from normal to the wire axis to parallel to that axis, J/sub c/ at 64 K and 0.2 T increases by more than a factor of four. Again, this is in contrast to the results observed for Bi-2212/Ag and Bi-2223/Ag flat tapes, which show no anisotropy under similar experimental conditions. We can explain these differences in angular anisotropy by referring to the microstructure of these two conductor types, which have distinctly different types of grain alignment. The large-scale application of any high temperature superconductor will require a metallic sheath to satisfy the mechanical and thermal requirements of superconducting magnets. Thus, an important step in the development of a high temperature superconductor is to study the properties of the superconductor in contact with a metallic surface. Due to the highly corrosive atmosphere necessary for the synthesis of Hg/sub 0.9/Re/sub 0.1/Ba/sub 2/Ca/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 8+x/ ((Hg,Re)1223) the selection of a suitable metal substrate is critical. In this study, we investigate the synthesis of(Hg,Re)1223 samples on Ag, AgHg, Au, and Pt substrates. The samples were prepared by mixing precursor powders in a dry methanol solution which was then pipette dropped or centrifuge coated onto the metal substrates. The samples were encapsulated in quartz and annealed. Microstructural analysis of phase growth and grain alignment at the superconductor/metal interface were carried out on multiple length scales via x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and x-ray microanalysis. Tl-1223 conductors have been fabricated by the powder-in-tube (PIT) and surface-coated conductor (thick film) techniques. After being sintered for different times, (Bi,Pb)/sub 2/Sr/sub 2/Ca/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 10/ bulk samples were pressed isothermally at 850/spl deg/C under constant pressure of 15 MPa for 1 hour. The samples were examined using SEM, EDS, XRD, and the mass density, critical temperature (T/sub c/) and critical current density (J/sub c/) were measured. As a result of removing voids in the materials under pressure and high temperature. It was found that the mass density significantly increased. In addition to high mass density, grain alignment within the samples was also improved which produced a significant improvement in the J/sub c/. Comparative studies on the Ag-clad 27-filamentary Bi-2223 tapes deformed under different conditions have been carried out using ac susceptibility and critical current measurements. Hot pressing improves the grain alignment and grain connectivity, resulting in a noticeable improvement in the critical current density in the low field region. However, the irreversibility line for the cold pressed Ag/Bi-2223 tape is positioned at higher temperatures than that for the rolled tape which is in turn positioned at higher temperatures than that for the hot-pressed tape. These results indicate that the hot deformation is only beneficial to the improvement of weak links whereas the cold deformation induces more defects which act as pinning centres in these tapes, responsible for the improvement in flux pinning. The evolution of the microstructure during heat treatment was investigated for dip-coated Bi/sub 2/Sr/sub 2/CaCu/sub 2/O/sub y/(Bi-2212)/Ag and Ag alloy tapes as a function of temperature and oxygen partial pressure (P(O/sub 2/)=0.01, 0.21 and 1 atm) using quenched and fully-processed tapes. The microstructures were essentially the same for Bi-2212 on pure Ag and on the Ag alloy, Although the melting temperature of Bi-2212 increased with increasing P(O/sub 2/), the solidification temperature (T/sub sol/) of Bi-2212 for P(O/sub 2/)=0.21 atm was higher than that for P(O/sub 2/)=1 atm. The volume fraction and grain alignment of Bi-2212 processed in P(O/sub 2/)=0.01 atm was smaller than in tapes processed in 0.21 and 1 atm, which were quite similar. HR-TEM studies on grain boundaries and AC susceptibility measurements suggest that the higher critical current density(J/sub c/) for tapes processed in P(O/sub 2/)=1 atm than that for 0.21 atm is due to improved coupling of the grains. While wind-and-react suffers from inaccurate temperature control, react-and-wind technique generates strain inside the core during winding. A new technique is being developed at the NHMFL: the react-wind-and-sinter technique. Long lengths of powder-in-tube conductor are reacted uniformly by pulling the tape continuously through a temperature profile in a controlled atmosphere furnace. Abstract

Synthesis of long Tl−Ba−Ca−Cu−O wires has been achieved by in situ synthesis techniques. Substitutions of Bi for Tl and of Sr for Ba were found to greatly enhance formation of the superconducting phase. Detailed microstructural characterization was performed on wires processed under various conditions in order to elucidate the reaction mechanisms. In addition, microstructural studies were carried out to investigate the beneficial effects of uniaxial compression on critical current density. It was found that the in situ reaction follows a 'natural' two-powder process with early formation of Tl-1212. This reaction pathway provides a mechanism for sintering and crack healing and protects existing Tl-1223 for regrowth. Intermediate heat treatment allows more complete advantage to be taken of the above processes, while subsequent pressing increases the density and promotes grain alignment with minimum damage. Further heat treatment sinters grains and allows completion of the transformation to Tl-1223. The high temperature superconducting phaseBi2.2Sr2.055Ca0.95Cu2Ox (Bi-2212) decomposes peritectically when heated above itssolidus temperature and reforms during slow cooling from the partiallymolten state. In thick films of 60 µm the Bi-2212 grains grow directlyfrom the melt when cooled at a rate of 5 K/h in oxygen atmosphere. Theorientation of the nuclei in the melt is random. After nucleation the grainsgrow anisotropically, leading to a mica- or platelet-like morphology. Upongrowth the Bi-2212 platelets encounter several obstacles, i.e. the sampleboundaries, second phase grains and other platelets. Various reactions occurwhen their growth is hindered. They stop growing, change the direction ofgrowth or even grow through the obstacle. A mechanism is proposed whichallows small grains to turn themselves into a favorable orientation at theirinitial stage of growth. Metal thin films with a specific orientation play vital roles in electronics, catalysts, and epitaxial templates. Although oriented metal films have been produced in the recent years, ultrathin oriented metal films (<10 nm) have not been achieved owing to the interfacial instability of the ultrathin films during the thermal annealing process. This study investigates chemical conversion of randomly oriented multigrain Au ultrathin films into (111)-oriented Au ultrathin films. A novel chemical process, termed pseudoequilibrium of etching and selective grain growth , is presented for the chemical conversion by using a quaternary ammonium halide. The reaction variables (reaction time, reaction temperature, species of halide ions) for the chemical conversion process are systematically investigated. This study reveals the in-plane rotational degeneracy in the Au(111) thin film epitaxially grown on a Si(111) substrate. The chemical process can be applied to a broad range of thicknesses from 9 to 100 nm.

The Tb 0.27 Dy 0.73 Fe 1.95 alloy was prepared using Bridgman–Stockbarge directional solidification under a high magnetic field. The effect of growth velocity and a 6-T magnetic field on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the Tb 0.27 Dy 0.73 Fe 1.95 alloy was investigated. With increasing growth velocity, the average angle between the growth direction and the long axis of the (Tb, Dy)Fe 3 grains first decreases and then increases, and the width of the (Tb, Dy)Fe 3 phases and the content of the Widmanstatten precipitates decrease gradually. The application of the magnetic field reduces the average angle of the (Tb, Dy)Fe 3 grains; decreases the content of the Widmanstatten precipitates; alters the distribution of Widmanstatten precipitates in the direction nearly parallel to magnetic field direction. Furthermore, the application of the magnetic field increases the fracture strength and strain of the alloys. Such increase can be attributed to the decreases on the average angle of the (Tb, Dy)Fe 3 phases and content of the Widmanstatten precipitates. We evaluated the microstructural evolution and the degree of texture of single filamentary BSCCO-2223 superconductor tape. Specifically, in order to characterize the positional degree of texture inside the BSCCO core quantitatively, a pole figure analysis was taken on the surfaces at different depths of superconducting core, and correlated to the microstructural investigation. Pole figure analysis indicated that the degree of texture varied with depth of the superconductor core, and was higher near the interface than inside the core. In addition, EPMA analysis showed that the second phases were randomly distributed and there is no remarkable difference in the distribution of second phases inside the BSCCO core. Abstract

The dust sub-millimetre polarisation of star-forming clouds carries information on dust and the role of magnetic fields in cloud evolution. With observations of a dense filamentary cloud G035.39-00.33, we aim to characterise the dust emission properties and the variations of the polarisation fraction. JCMT SCUBA-2/POL-2 data at 850um are combined with Planck 850um (353GHz) data to map polarisation fractions. With previous SCUBA-2 observations (450um and 850um) and Herschel data, the column densities are determined via modified blackbody fits and via radiative transfer modelling. Models are constructed to examine how the polarisation angles and fractions depend on potential magnetic field geometries and grain alignment. POL-2 data show clear changes in the magnetic field orientation. The filament has a peak column density of N(H2)~7 10^22 cm-2, a minimum dust temperature of T~12 K, and a mass of some 4300Msun for the area N(H2)> 5 10^21 cm-2. The estimated average value of the dust opacity spectral index is beta ~ 1.9. The ratio of sub-millimetre and J band optical depths is tau(250 um)/tau(J) ~ 2.5 10^-3, more than four times the typical values for diffuse medium. The polarisation fraction decreases as a function of column density to p ~ 1% in the central filament. Because of noise, the observed decrease of p(N) is significant only at N(H2)>2 10^22 cm-2. The observations suggest that the grain alignment is not constant. Although the data can be explained with a complete loss of alignment at densities above ~ 10^4 cm-3 or using the predictions of radiative torques alignment, the uncertainty of the field geometry and the spatial filtering of the SCUBA-2 data prevent strong conclusions. G035.39-00.33 shows strong signs of dust evolution and the low polarisation fraction is suggestive of a loss of polarised emission from its densest parts., accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Abstract

Interstellar and circumstellar matter.-- et al., Within ten nearby (d < 450 pc) Gould belt molecular clouds we evaluate statistically the relative orientation between the magnetic field projected on the plane of sky, inferred from the polarized thermal emission of Galactic dust observed by Planck at 353 GHz, and the gas column density structures, quantified by the gradient of the column density, NH. The selected regions, covering several degrees in size, are analysed at an effective angular resolution of 10′ FWHM, thus sampling physical scales from 0.4 to 40 pc in the nearest cloud. The column densities in the selected regions range from NH≈ 1021 to1023 cm-2, and hence they correspond to the bulk of the molecular clouds. The relative orientation is evaluated pixel by pixel and analysed in bins of column density using the novel statistical tool called “histogram of relative orientations”. Throughout this study, we assume that the polarized emission observed by Planck at 353 GHz is representative of the projected morphology of the magnetic field in each region, i.e., we assume a constant dust grain alignment efficiency, independent of the local environment. Within most clouds we find that the relative orientation changes progressively with increasing NH, from mostly parallel or having no preferred orientation to mostly perpendicular. In simulations of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence in molecular clouds this trend in relative orientation is a signature of Alfvénic or sub-Alfvénic turbulence, implying that the magnetic field is significant for the gas dynamics at the scales probed by Planck. We compare the deduced magnetic field strength with estimates we obtain from other methods and discuss the implications of the Planck observations for the general picture of molecular cloud formation and evolution., The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Research Council under the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013)/ERC grant agreement No. 267934.

Abstract

Interstellar and circumstellar matter.-- et al., Planck observations at 353 GHz provide the first fully sampled maps of the polarized dust emission towards interstellar filaments and their backgrounds (i.e., the emission observed in the surroundings of the filaments). The data allow us to determine the intrinsic polarization properties of the filaments and therefore to provide insight into the structure of their magnetic field (B). We present the polarization maps of three nearby (several parsecs long) star-forming filaments of moderate column density (NH about 1022 cm-2): Musca, B211, and L1506. These three filaments are detected above the background in dust total and polarized emission. We use the spatial information to separate Stokes I, Q, and U of the filaments from those of their backgrounds, an essential step in measuring the intrinsic polarization fraction (p) and angle (ψ) of each emission component. We find that the polarization angles in the three filaments (ψfil) are coherent along their lengths and not the same as in their backgrounds (ψbg). The differences between ψfil and ψbg are 12° and 54° for Musca and L1506, respectively, and only 6° in the case of B211. These differences forMusca and L1506 are larger than the dispersions of ψ, both along the filaments and in their backgrounds. The observed changes of ψ are direct evidence of variations of the orientation of the plane of the sky (POS) projection of the magnetic field. As in previous studies, we find a decrease of several per cent in p with NH from the backgrounds to the crest of the filaments. We show that the bulk of the drop in p within the filaments cannot be explained by random fluctuations of the orientation of the magnetic field because they are too small (σψ< 10°). We recognize the degeneracy between the dust alignment efficiency (by, e.g., radiative torques) and the structure of the B-field in causing variations in p, but we argue that the decrease in p from the backgrounds to the filaments results in part from depolarization associated with the 3D structure of the B-field: both its orientation in the POS and with respect to the POS. We do not resolve the inner structure of the filaments, but at the smallest scales accessible with Planck (~0.2 pc), the observed changes of ψ and p hold information on the magnetic field structure within filaments. Abstract

et al., Polarized emission observed by Planck HFI at 353 GHz towards a sample of nearby fields is presented, focusing on the statistics of polarization fractions p and angles ψ. The polarization fractions and column densities in these nearby fields are representative of the range of values obtained over the whole sky. We find that: (i) the largest polarization fractions are reached in the most diffuse fields; (ii) the maximum polarization fraction pmax decreases with column density NH in the more opaque fields with NH> 1021 cm-2; and (iii) the polarization fraction along a given line of sight is correlated with the local spatial coherence of the polarization angle. These observations are compared to polarized emission maps computed in simulations of anisotropic magnetohydrodynamical turbulence in which we assume a uniform intrinsic polarization fraction of the dust grains. We find that an estimate of this parameter may be recovered from the maximum polarization fraction pmax in diffuse regions where the magnetic field is ordered on large scales and perpendicular to the line of sight. This emphasizes the impact of anisotropies of the magnetic field on the emerging polarization signal. The decrease of the maximum polarization fraction with column density in nearby molecular clouds is well reproduced in the simulations, indicating that it is essentially due to the turbulent structure of the magnetic field: an accumulation of variously polarized structures along the line of sight leads to such an anti-correlation. In the simulations, polarization fractions are also found to anti-correlate with the angle dispersion function . However, the dispersion of the polarization angle for a given polarization fraction is found to be larger in the simulations than in the observations, suggesting a shortcoming in the physical content of these numerical models. Abstract

et al., This paper presents an overview of the polarized sky as seen by Planck HFI at 353 GHz, which is the most sensitive Planck channel for dust polarization. We construct and analyse maps of dust polarization fraction and polarization angle at 1° resolution, taking into account noise bias and possible systematic effects. The sensitivity of the Planck HFI polarization measurements allows for the first time a mapping of Galactic dust polarized emission on large scales, including low column density regions. We find that the maximum observed dust polarization fraction is high (pmax = 19.8%), in particular in some regions of moderate hydrogen column density (NH < 2 × 1021 cm-2). The polarization fraction displays a large scatter at NH below a few 1021 cm-2. There is a general decrease in the dust polarization fraction with increasing column density above NH ≃ 1 × 1021 cm-2 and in particular a sharp drop above NH ≃ 1.5 × 1022 cm-2. We characterize the spatial structure of the polarization angle using the angle dispersion function. We find that the polarization angle is ordered over extended areas of several square degrees, separated by filamentary structures of high angle dispersion function. These appear as interfaces where the sky projection of the magnetic field changes abruptly without variations in the column density. The polarization fraction is found to be anti-correlated with the dispersion of polarization angles. These results suggest that, at the resolution of 1°, depolarization is due mainly to fluctuations in the magnetic field orientation along the line of sight, rather than to the loss of grain alignment in shielded regions. We also compare the polarization of thermal dust emission with that of synchrotron measured with Planck, low-frequency radio data, and Faraday rotation measurements toward extragalactic sources. These components bear resemblance along the Galactic plane and in some regions such as the Fan and North Polar Spur regions.
