In 1822 and 1823 three young German scholars, Peter von Medem, Gustav Parthey and Johann Heinrich Westphal, undertook a research expedition to Egypt and Palestine. One major result of this journey was a very accurate map of Jerusalem: “Jerusalem und seine nächsten Umgebungen” (“Jerusalem and its environs”), published in 1825 by Heinrich Berghaus in his journal Hertha. Together with Franz Wilhelm Sieber’s plan of 1818 this map belongs to the very first “modern” maps of Jerusalem, based on measurements and new scientific research results. In addition, the sketches, as well as extracts from Parthey’s and von Medem’s diaries, formed the material for Berghaus’ memoir to his Map of Syria in 1835. This article deals with the background of the voyage, the production, publication and reception of the map, and the complex network of actors involved, based on recently discovered archival sources. Moreover, the map became forgotten in the 19th and 20th centuries. Apart from Berghaus, the map was actually never used by later cartographers of Jerusalem and no longer mentioned in studies concerning the history of the city’s modern cartography.

It is argued that although they are not paper maps, and were never printed or included in any atlas or map collection, these tapestries ought to be categorized as realistic pilgrimage maps, based on first-hand observation and guided by the unique late medieval Christian geo-religious perception of the Holy Land and the Holy City. Furthermore, the resemblance of the tapestries to printed maps, such as the map included in the book of Bernhard of Breydenbach, and other well-known contemporary paintings of Jerusalem and the Holy Land, such as the one commemorating the pilgrimage of Friedrich the Wise, may hint at the source material used by their creators, who lived in a similar social-cultural milieu. The article specifically examines the Palestine Exploration Fund, launched in 1865, and its German counterpart, Deutsche Verein zur Erforschung Palastinas, and assesses the impact of the groups' motivations for research, the background of their memberships, and their focuses of study.

This article presents the story of the map drawn by the German cartographer Heinrich Berghaus and his attempt to illustrate the pioneering route of the American scholar Edward Robinson and his companion Eli Smith through the western Negev desert. Berghaus sent the map to John Washington, the Secretary of the Royal Geographical Society and editor of its journal, to be published with Robinson’s report. The published map, however, added the routes of the French explorer Count Jules de Bertou on the Negev’s eastern side.
