The Fezouata Biota (Morocco) is a Burgess Shale-type (BST) assemblage that provides a wealth of information on Early Ordovician ecosystems. Much work has been done to compare the preservation of the Fezouata Biota to other BSTs. However, studies investigating preservation variations within the Fezouata Biota are rare. Here, we use probabilities to investigate the preservation of various ecological categories of Fezouata eumetazoans. Complex taphonomic processes and phylum-specific constraints have led to the better preservation of predators/scavengers in this biota. However, no differences in preservation are observed between vagile and sessile taxa. Importantly, Tremadocian taxa are better preserved than Floian ones. As such, this study highlights the gradual closure of the BST window of preservation in the Zagora region of Morocco and constitutes a benchmark for future palaeoecological and evolutionary studies on the Fezouata Biota. Species of the ectomycorrhizal (ECM) family Cortinariaceae (Agaricales, Agaricomycetes, Basidiomycota) have long been considered impoverished or absent from lowland tropical rainforests. Several decades of collecting in forests dominated by ECM trees in South America's Guiana Shield is countering this view, with discovery of numerous Cortinariaceae species. To date, ~12 morphospecies of this family have been found in the central Pakaraima Mountains of Guyana. Here, we describe three of these as new species of Cortinarius and two as new species of Phlegmacium from forests dominated by the ECM tree genera Dicymbe (Fabaceae subfam. Detarioideae), Aldina (Fabaceae subfam. Papilionoideae), and Pakaraimaea (Cistaceae). Macromorphological, micromorphological, habitat, and DNA sequence data are provided for each new species. Equisetaleans are a frequent floral element in the upper Palaeozoic of Gondwana and traditionally have been assigned to a few species of Phyllotheca based mainly on vegetative features. However, studies have suggested that the reproductive organs of Gondwanan equisetaleans may be more complex than previously thought, and new Gondwanan taxa have been reported during recent decades. The evolution of these plants is believed to have been driven by changes in their reproductive organs, including the emergence of simple sporangia or cruciate sporangiophores at the internodes as well as the development of strobilar structures. Here, we describe new records of Cruciatheca Cúneo et Escapa and Conustheca gen. nov. from Gzhelian-earliest Cisuralian deposits in the southeastern boundary of the Paganzo Basin, Argentina. The new species with whorls of strobilus-like structures provides further evidence of a diverse equisetalean flora across the southern continents. The Sierra de Famatina of northwestern Argentina contains one of the best Cambro-Ordovician stratigraphic records of the SW Gondwana margin. Two lithotectonic belts (Calalaste–Narváez and Famatina–Valle Fértil), separated by master faults, preserve evidence of two former volcano-sedimentary basins (Eastern and Western, respectively). The Calalaste–Narváez Lithotectonic Belt consists of an Ediacaran to early Cambrian basement unconformably overlain by a 490–480 Ma cover of very low-grade volcano-sedimentary and volcanic succession that presumably formed in an extensional tectonic regime. In contrast, the Famatina–Valle Fértil Lithotectonic Belt comprises a basement consisting of the late-lower-to-middle Cambrian metasedimentary Achavil and Negro Peinado formations unconformably overlain by meta/sedimentary and metavolcanic rocks ranging in age from the late Cambrian to the Middle Ordovician (ca. 490–460 Ma). This belt includes the Famatinian Cordilleran-type magmatic arc active mainly at ca. 473–468 Ma, coeval with andesite to rhyolitic volcanism (Suri and Las Planchadas formations). Rhyolitic tuffs of ca. 473 Ma (εNdi = − 4.1) were found in the La Aguadita Formation, allowing this unit to be re-assigned to the late Floian. The oldest magmatism of the Sierra de Famatina is characterized by isotopically evolved (εNdi = − 5.1) rhyolitic tuffs of ca. 490 Ma in the Bordo Atravesado Formation, which was coeval with deposition of Mn-enriched hydrothermal cherts. This early Famatinan volcanism contrast with that of similar age and isotopically less evolved occurred in the Calalaste–Narváez Lithotectonic Belt suggesting variations of the source of magmas across the space and time within the Famatinan Orogenic Cycle. We propose that both described lithotectonic belts likely diverge northwards into Chile and Peru, wrapping around the Arequipa–Antofalla Proterozoic block. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The early Jurassic syn-rift phase generated a significant set of half-grabens, calderas, and pull-apart basins along the southwestern margin of South America. In particular, the Loncon Complex, located in the western Extra-Andean region of North Patagonia (∼40°S), forms part of such structures. In the present contribution, we characterize and define the Early Jurassic extensional architecture of the Loncon Complex, constituted of a small-scale pull-apart basin associated with polygenetic volcanism, based on outcrop-scale kinematic data from strike-slip faults, and stratigraphic analysis. Lithofacies analysis, texture, componentry, and structural data allow us to distinguish four stages during the evolution of the Complex; the three early stages are followed by a deformational phase, and crowned by a limited felsic monogenetic volcano; stages consist of a) A continental alluvial to fluvial sedimentation related with an early pull-apart basin phase; b) local phreatomagmatic explosions with syn-eruptive sedimentation periods of a medium life cycle (~104-105 years), b) effusive andesitic stage generated by strike-slip transtension, resulting in partial deformation and development of a local unconformity, and c) a final short-term silicic tuff ring volcano construction (days to months' time span). The measured faulting pattern is synchronous with the Loncon Complex's sedimentation and volcanism. Kinematic data allow us to characterize the Loncon Complex evolution under NNE-NNW minimum horizontal stress (SHmin). This local NNE-oriented extension is interpreted as a consequence of a regional process, in a similar way to the report for the Neuquén Basin and the surrounding region in Patagonia. New U-Pb data indicate the onset of volcanism began in the Sinemurian (193.08 ± 1.13 Ma) also supporting an equivalent timing with the vicinity half-grabens areas of the North Patagonia region and the Neuquén Basin (Figure S1a). Core samples from four boreholes (SAV-1, SAV-117, SAV-124, SAV-125) within the Vaddugudem block of the Godavari Valley Coalfield, Southern India have been palynologically investigated to understand the stratigraphic setting of that area. Only 60 out of the 172 samples yielded identifiable palynoassemblages. From the observed palynofloral composition, five distinct palynoassemblages (Scheuringipollenites Assemblage: PA-I, Striatopodocarpites + Faunipollenites Assemblage: PA-II, Striates + Striasulcites Assemblage: PA-III, Striates + Guttulapollenites Assemblage: PA-IV, Lundbladispora + Verrucosisporites Assemblage: PA-V) were identified. Furthermore, five distinct palynozones (Scheuringipollenites barakarensis Zone = PZ-1, Striatopodocarpites + Faunipollenites Zone = PZ-2, Gondisporites raniganjensis Zone = PZ-3, Guttulapollenites gondwanensis-Striatopodocatpites tiwarii Zone = PZ-4 and Playfordiaspora cancellosa Zone = PZ-5) were identified. These correspond to the Artinskian (PZ-1), Wordian–Capitanian (PZ-2 and PZ-3), Wuchiapingian–Changhsingian (PZ-4) and Induan–Olenekian (PZ-5), respectively. The study site is situated within a geologically active region within the basin, primarily attributed to the exposure of elevated basement rocks on the eastern side of the borehole locations. Notably, the palynozones appear as relatively narrow layers in the boreholes investigated within this tectonically disturbed basin. The repetition of palynoassemblages and palynozones at small intervals suggests that the boreholes are located in a fault zone with multiple fault planes and that palynomorphs were reworked along these fault planes. Fault slices of different lithological units containing palynoassemblages may have intersected the boreholes. Specifically, the recurrence of thin marker palynoassemblages and palynozones, which show similarities in age to the Barakar and Lower Kamthi/Raniganj formations, is likely attributable to tectonic disturbances, such as faulting. This disturbance may have induced the reworking or migration of palynomorphs along the fault plane. As a result, it is concluded that variations in the stratigraphic abundance of these reworked palynomorphs can serve as indicators of tectonic settings, even when these settings are not readily discernible in the geological record. • A diverse assemblage of anatomically preserved plants is described from Oum El Jerane. • The euphyllophytes include one iridopterid, two cladoxylopsids and two aneurophytales. • Arachnoxylon and Triloboxylon are recorded for the first time in Gondwana. • The new plant assemblage may belong to a drier phytochorion than the Laurussia one. The Middle Devonian is a transitional period for the first vascular plants, which acquire modern vegetative and reproductive structures, diversify considerably and, within the euphyllophytes, evolve the first representatives of modern plant groups, the monilophytes and lignophytes. However, the dynamics of this diversification across the different paleocontinents remains obscure, particularly within Gondwana. The upper Givetian locality of Oum el Jerane, in southeastern Morocco, has yielded a new assemblage of anatomically preserved plant remains whose description contributes to a better understanding of the floras of the northern margin of Gondwana during the Middle Devonian. The euphyllophytes include one iridopterid, Arachnoxylon minor , two cladoxylopsids, one of which represents the new genus Jerana , and two aneurophytales affiliated with the genus Triloboxylon. The cladoxylopsid remains from Oum el Jerane correspond to relatively small plants compared to the well-known coeval cladoxylopsids of Laurussia. Compared to the taxonomic composition of the four phytochoria recently defined for the Middle Devonian, the Oum el Jerane plant assemblage corresponds to the 'subtropical' phytochorion, which is close to the 'Laurussia' phytochorion, but which would correspond to drier environmental conditions. Mantle plumes related to Large Igneous Provinces have been linked to continental break‐up and validated by the outpouring of mafic‐ultramafic magmas that range from continental flood basalt magmatism to submarine plateau volcanism. This study presents a new set of geochemical and mineralogical data on mafic magmatic rocks from the Sylhet Trap of the Shillong Plateau, northeast India. The investigated mafic rocks (basalt and dolerite) are predominantly sub‐alkaline‐tholeiitic, composed of bytownite+labradorite and diopside+augite, with ophitic to sub‐ophitic and glomeroporphyritic textures, the dark interstitial region of much finer grains consisting of opaque minerals and devitrified glass. The mafic rocks of Sylhet Trap show light rare earth elements enrichment with (La/Yb)N ratio (1.92–2.86) and (La/Sm)N ratio (1.11–1.40), an almost flat pattern of heavy rare earth elements along with mild europium anomalies (Eu/Eu*= 0.94–1.11). Trace element characteristics suggest their affinity towards enriched mid‐oceanic ridge basalt and generated from low degree of partial melting of spinel source with minor involvement of crustal contamination. The similarity in geochemical characteristics of the investigated mafic rocks with the magmatism of Rajmahal Traps, eastern Peninsular India, Abor Volcanics, eastern Himalaya, along with Bunbury Basalt of western Australia and Cona Mafic exposed in southeastern Tibet, suggests their genetic linkage with mantle plume activities. Thus, we argue that the magmatic event of the Sylhet Trap is related to the Kerguelen mantle plume activity that played a significant role in the fragmentation of eastern Gondwana during the Lower Cretaceous period, giving rise to Greater India, Antarctica and northwest Australia. Identifying source orogens for syn-orogenic sediments in dispersed fragments of a supercontinent provides key information on the tectonic evolution of the orogens involved in supercontinent assembly and on paleogeographic reconstruction. An approach using U-Pb geochronology and trace elements of multiple detrital minerals including zircon, rutile, apatite, and monazite has major advantages over detrital zircon studies alone. Application of this multi-pronged approach to Ediacaran and Cambrian clastic sedimentary rocks from the West Cathaysia terrane of the South China block demonstrates that these rocks were deposited in two distinct, but overlapping, syn-orogenic basins related to the assembly of eastern Gondwana. The Ediacaran rocks have detritus likely sourced from the Paterson Petermann orogen (PPO) in Australia, and the dominant 650–600 Ma populations and trace element compositions of detrital rutile and apatite indicate a significant Ediacaran thermal and high-pressure metamorphic event in the orogen. The appearance of Cambrian and Tonian detrital rutile and apatite populations in the Cambrian rocks indicates derivation from a different source orogen characterized by multiple thermal events, most likely the Kuunga-Pinjarra orogen (KPO). Our data suggest that West Cathaysia was located adjacent to both the PPO and the KPO and support the hypothesis that the PPO was a collisional, rather than a long-lived post-Grenvillian intraplate, orogen. Rebbachisaurids are a group of basal diplodocoid sauropods that diversified primarily in Gondwana between the early Lower Cretaceous and the early Upper Cretaceous. Their phylogenetic relationships are still under debate given the fragmentary and incomplete nature of its remains. Here, we provide a detailed description of the postcranial remains of Campananeyen fragilissimus gen. et sp. nov. from the Candeleros Formation (lower Cenomanian) of Neuquén Province, Argentina. Campananeyen presents notable features that allow it to be recognised as a new species by the presence of an underdeveloped crista prootica, paraoccipital process internally hollow and a fuse dorsal alar arm of the ilium. The phylogenetic analysis recovered this taxon as a basal rebbachisaurid closely related to Zapalasaurus, Sidersaura and the specimen from La Amarga Formation MACN-Pv-N 35. The new rebbachisaurid is recovered as the sister taxon of Sidersaura due the presence of procoelous posterior caudal vertebrae and dorsoventrally flattened posterior caudal centra. C. fragilissimus presents an extreme pneumatization of the sacral region with an autapomorphic dorsal alar arm of the sacral transverse processes. Finally, the phylogenetic analysis supports a South American origin for Rebbachisauridae and an early diversification to Africa and Europe by the Barremian-Aptian as previously suggested. Radiogenic isotopes of igneous and detrital minerals from various clastic rocks of mountain belts are used to reveal tectonic and sedimentary processes, which are otherwise difficult to detect. Here, we discuss the results of U–Pb and Lu–Hf zircon systems, and 40Ar/39Ar on detrital white mica in Eastern Alps. Zircon and white mica are chemically and mechanically stable and occur in magmatic, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. During subsequent metamorphism, zircon is resistant against high temperature, >650 °C (U–Pb) and 900 °C (Lu–Hf). The Lu–Hf zircon system is used as a tracer of initial magma separation from the mantle, and the U–Pb zircon system records magmatic crystallization. The 40Ar/39Ar white mica system is stable up to 400–450 °C dating either formation or cooling after high-grade metamorphism. Detrital U–Pb zircon ages on two major rivers draining the Eastern Alps do not record any sign of Alpine orogeny or metamorphism. Consequently, U–Pb zircon studies can entirely miss the record of collisional orogeny in cool, magma-poor collision orogens. In contrast, 40Ar/39Ar white mica ages record Early and Late Alpine metamorphism but are limited to revealing the pre-orogenic history. U–Pb zircon and 40Ar/39Ar white mica yield different information in provenance studies. In the Eastern Alps, U–Pb zircon dating of magmatic and clastic rocks indicates intense formation of magmatic rocks between 630 and 230 Ma. Felsic rocks dominate the older age groups, and increasingly young mafic rocks were dated, specifically between 265 and 230 Ma. Hf isotopes record increasing juvenile input since ∼630 Ma. Two different groups with respect to Mesoproterozoic depleted mantle ages are shown: (1) one group with a Mesoproterozoic age gap typical for Gondwana-derived units, and (2) a rare group with Mesoproterozoic ages recording a new tectonic element in the Austroalpine basement in Alps. The geologic evolution of the Gondwanide orogen recorded during the late Palaeozoic along the Panthalassan border of Gondwana is related to an active continental margin, though it is still debatable whether it was built by collision or accretion. To disentangle its orogenic processes and provide constraints on the orogen type, we characterize the physicochemical conditions of metamorphism and associated deformation of the Mina Gonzalito Metamorphic Complex from northern Patagonia (41°28’30” S-65°40’30” W). New field mapping and comprehensive petrochronologic analysis constrain the evolution of a thick-skinned fold and thrust belt in a retroarc setting, which is spatially and temporally related to the geometry and kinematics of the right-lateral reverse El Jagüelito ductile shear zone. Metamorphic evolution resulted in a clockwise P‐T‐t-D path reflecting three stages of continuously changing P-T conditions under high-pressure (8.0–9.9 kbar) amphibolite facies (540–680°C) during a single-phase progressive ductile deformation event. Monazite ages ranging from 303 ± 5 to 252 ± 6 Ma account for the single-phase regional tectono-metamorphic event spanning ~ 50 My. Our results, integrated with regional data, led to interpreting the late Palaeozoic Gondwanide orogen developed along the Panthalassan margin of Gondwana as accretionary in advancing-mode. The composition of the trilobite fauna from the Devonian Paraná Basin in Brazil is still not fully elucidated. Although rich literature on the southern portion of this basin, the northwestern part has been poorly explored. In this study, we reveal new taxa and provide a comprehensive taxonomic composition of malvinoxhosan trilobites collected from the PragianEmsian sediments of Alto Garças Subbasin, Brazil. We report Burmeisteria notica, Metacryphaeus australis, Pennaia pauliana, Calmonia signifer and Kozlowskiaspis subseciva, well known elements from the southern portion of the Paraná Basin. Metacryphaeus meloi, unprecedented in the Paraná Basin, reveals itself here in the oldest biostratigraphic position in relation to other specimens reported from the Cabeças Formation (Frasnian-Famennian, Parnaíba Basin). We reveal a new species of Bainella, here described as Bainella (Belenops) sulmatogrossensis sp. nov. We discuss the biostratigraphic position of components of this fauna and their correlation with other Devonian units. Taking all together, our work provides a new picture about the trilobite taxonomic composition in the northwestern portion of the Paraná Basin, and can help our understanding of speciation pulses and dispersion patterns among the different Devonian basins in Gondwana. This paper investigates the origin of ultra-deep dolostone and the factors influencing large-scale dolostone reservoirs, focusing on the Sinian Dengying Formation and the Cambrian Longwangmiao Formation in the Sichuan Basin. The study involves petrology, microscale X-ray diffraction, trace element analysis, and C-O-Sr-Mg isotope experiments to provide a detailed analysis. The research findings indicate that the Dengying and Longwangmiao formations comprise six types of matrix dolostone and four types of cement. The Dengying Formation, which developed under a sedimentary background of a restricted platform, contains special microbial and microcrystalline dolostones. The dolomite grains are small (<30 µm) and have a low order degree (Min=0.55), with large unit cell parameters and an extremely high Na content (Max=788 ppm). The 87Sr/86Sr value of the dolostone is consistent with contemporaneous seawater, while the δ13C and δ18O values are lower than those of the contemporaneous seawater. The δ26Mg value is small (Min=−2.31‰). Powder crystal, fine-crystalline, and calcite dolostones with coarser and more ordered crystals exhibit similar δ13C and 87Sr/86Sr values to microbial and microcrystalline dolostone. During the sedimentary period of the Dengying Formation, ancient marine conditions were favorable for microbial survival. Microorganisms induced the direct precipitation of primary dolomite in seawater, forming microbial and microcrystalline dolostones during the seawater diagenesis period. During the subsequent diagenesis period, dolostones underwent the effects of dissolution-recrystallization, structures, and hydrothermal fluids. This resulted in the formation of dolostone with coarser crystals, a higher degree of order, and various types of cement. The Longwangmiao Formation was developed in an inter-platform beach characterized by special particle dolostone. The particle dolostone has a large grain size (>30 µm), high order degree (Min=0.7), small unit cell parameters, high Na content (Max=432 ppm), and low Fe and Mn content. The δ26Mg and δ13C values are consistent with the contemporaneous seawater, while the δ18O and 87Sr/86Sr values are higher than those of the contemporaneous seawater. There is mutual coupling between multiple-period varying δ26Mg values and sedimentary cycles. The dolostone in the Longwangmiao Formation resulted from the metasomatism of limestone by evaporated seawater. The thickness and scale of the dolostone in the Longwangmiao Formation are controlled by the periodic changes in sea level. The period of dolostone development from the Sinian to the Cambrian coincides with the transition from Rodinia's breakup to Gondwana's convergence. These events have resulted in vastly different marine properties, microbial activities, and sedimentary climate backgrounds between the Sinian and the Cambrian. These differences may be the fundamental factors leading to the distinct origins of dolostone formed in the two periods. The distribution of sedimentary facies and deep tectonic activities in the Sichuan Basin from the Sinian to the Cambrian is influenced by the breakup and convergence of the supercontinent. This process plays a key role in determining the distribution, pore formation, preservation, and adjustment mechanisms of ultra-deep dolostone reservoirs. To effectively analyze the genesis and reservoir mechanisms of ultra-deep dolostone in other regions or layers, especially during the specific period of supercontinent breakup and convergence, it is crucial to consider the comprehensive characteristics of seawater properties, microbial activities, sedimentary environment, and fault systems driven by tectonic activities. The timing of extensional events in northern Gondwana remains elusive. In relations to this event, a new zircon U-Pb age and Hf isotopic compositions, and whole-rock geochemistry provided here for the amphibolites in the basement unit of the Menderes Massif (MM) within the Anatolide-Tauride Block (ATB). LA-ICP-MS U-Pb zircon dating of one sample yielded a crystallization age of 367.0 ± 2.5 Ma, providing the first record of Late Devonian (Famennian) mafic magmatism in the Menderes Massif. This sample contains inherited zircon grains with ages spanning from 588 Ma to 541 Ma, likely sourced from late Neoproterozoic country rocks. Chondrite-normalized rare earth element patterns exhibit enrichment in light rare earth elements and flat patterns for heavy rare earth elements, suggesting affinities with tholeiitic EMORB and ocean island basalt. The geochemical data, coupled with the positive εHf(t) values ranging from 0.5 to 7.8, indicate that the amphibolite likely originated from juvenile melts generated by partial melting of the asthenospheric mantle. This melt was subsequently modified by crustal contamination and fractional crystallization. Contemporaneous EMORB- and OIB-like mafic rocks are identified in the eastern Taurides and Iran, respectively. Both regional geological and geochemical evidence proposes that Late Devonian magmatism in the Anatolide-Tauride Block occurred in a within-plate tectonic setting. This magmatic activity might have been triggered by the northward subduction of the Paleotethys beneath the Pontides during the Devonian, a process that would produce a slab-pull force, creating an extensional tectonic regime along the northern margin of Gondwana. The Sakarya Zone of northern Turkey contains a well-preserved Early-Middle Jurassic and Late Cretaceous submarine magmatic arc constructed over pre-Jurassic bedrocks that are considered to be the eastward extension of the Armorican Terrane Assemblage in Europe. In this study, we present U-Pb-Hf isotopic data from the detrital zircons of middle Permian and Lower Jurassic sandstones to reveal episodes of Paleozoic-early Mesozoic magmatic flare-ups. Detrital zircon ages, together with data from the literature, define three major age groups at 400-380 Ma, 326310 Ma, and 250-230 Ma, which indicates three distinct magmatic flare-ups. In addition, there are minor age clusters at 460-430 Ma and 215-195 Ma. Initial eHf values of the detrital zircons indicate significant juvenile input during the Triassic flare-up, the involvement of significantly reworked crustal material during the late Carboniferous magmatic flare-up, and both juvenile and reworked crustal material during the Middle Devonian magmatic flare-up. Within the pre-Jurassic continental basement rocks of the Sakarya Zone, the late Carboniferous igneous rocks are well documented and most voluminous, and the Middle Devonian rocks are known locally, while the Triassic igneous rocks--apart fromthose in Triassic accretionary complexes--are hardly known. Because the Sakarya Zone is a Gondwana-derived continental block that was later involved in the Variscan and Alpine orogenies, these magmatic flare-ups cannot be explained by subduction-related processes along a single subduction zone. We propose that the Sakarya Zone rifted from the northern margin of Gondwana during the Late Ordovician-Silurian, the Devonian magmatic flare-up (400-380 Ma) was related to the southward subduction of the Rheic Ocean beneath the Sakarya Zone during its northward drift, the late Carboniferous magmatic flare-up (326-310 Ma) occurred following the collision of the Sakarya Zone with Laurussia, and the Triassic flare-up (250-230 Ma) resulted from northward subduction of the Tethys Ocean beneath the Sakarya Zone. Comparison with data from the literature shows that the Triassic and late Carboniferous magmatic flare-ups are also characteristic features of neighboring Armorican domains, such as the Balkans and the Caucasus; however, the Middle Devonian flare-up appears to be restricted to the Sakarya Zone. Along with the late Carboniferous flare-up, the Late Ordovician-Silurian flare-up, which is locally recorded in the Sakarya Zone, is typical of the Armorican Terrane Assemblage as a whole. Abstract\nKEY POINTSDevonian successions in the Calliope and Yarrol provinces of the northern New England Orogen in central to northern Queensland have a lithological assemblage and depositional environments indicative of a close association with a subduction-related volcanic arc. These rocks have been interpreted as related to island arc and backarc settings based on geochemical characteristics of magmatic rocks. We present new detrital zircon ages from the Devonian to lower Carboniferous successions of the Calliope and Yarrol province successions. Most samples have no or relatively few zircon grains extracted except for samples of quartz-rich sandstone in the Middle Devonian Erebus beds of Hunter Island, located 160 km north-northwest of Rockhampton and another sample in the Rockhampton district. The samples with abundant zircon, and some with less common zircon, have prominent peaks of mid Cambrian to Ordovician ages and are consistent with derivation from the northern Thomson Orogen where igneous rocks of this age are documented in the Charters Towers Province. These data indicate a connection between the Devonian arc-flank deposits of the northern New England Orogen and the Thomson Orogen, which had previously been well established for Carboniferous deep-marine sandstones of the subduction complex (e.g. Shoalwater Formation). These results favour an east-facing continental margin arc setting in the Devonian contra to intra-oceanic island arc settings previously proposed. The Troiseck-Floning and Rosskogel nappes are part of the Austroalpine Unit in the eastern part of the Eastern Alps. The nappes are in tectonic contact and comprise Permian to Mesozoic lower greenschist facies metamorphic metasediments, but only the Troiseck-Floning Nappe consists of a pre-Permian crystalline basement (Troiseck Complex) as well. LA-ICP-MS U–Pb zircon ages, Rb–Sr biotite ages and geochemical data unravel the geological evolution of these tectonic units from Neoproterozoic to Mesozoic times. Detrital U–Pb zircon analyses from siliciclastic metasediments of the Troiseck Complex indicate a late Ediacaran to early Cambrian deposition age of the volcanoclastic sequence. The age distribution correlates with a position along the northeastern Gondwana margin. A late Cambrian crystallization age (502.4 ± 6.8 Ma) of granitic intrusions together with evidence for Late Cambrian/Ordovician magmatism and metamorphism indicate a position at an active plate margin. Polyphase overprinting during the Variscan orogeny is recorded by Late Devonian/early Carboniferous pegmatite dikes (~ 353 Ma) that formed after an early Variscan event, while Pennsylvanian ages of overgrowth rims and inherited grains (~ 320 Ma) are evidence for late Variscan metamorphism. Rhyolitic to andesitic volcanic rocks from the Troiseck-Floning and Rosskogel nappes (271–264 Ma) concomitant with intrusions of porphyric granitoids now transformed to augen gneiss (271 Ma) yield evidence for Permian rift-related magmatism that is widely reported from the Eastern Alps and Western Carpathians. Rb–Sr biotite ages (75–74 Ma) indicate Late Cretaceous cooling below c. 300 °C. This relates to Late Cretaceous exhumation of the Troiseck-Floning Nappe following an Eo-Alpine metamorphic overprint at lower greenschist-facies metamorphic conditions. Based on the similar lithostratigraphy, analogous geological evolution and structure, the Troiseck-Floning Nappe represents the lateral extension of the Seckau Nappe. Aim: Understanding the historical biogeography of the Earth's oldest terrestrial lineages provides insights into lineage diversification in relation to plate tectonics, climate change and biome shifts at maximum timescales. We investigate the biogeography of an ancient arachnid family, dragon pseudoscorpions, which are found today in mesic (mostly temperate) forests on all continents except Antarctica and Europe, have potential origins on Pangea and comprise species with extremely limited dispersal capacities. We evaluate the respective role of continental vicariance (abiotic) and biome shifts (biotic) deep in time and unravel the evolutionary history of this ancient group. Location: Global. Taxon: Pseudotyrannochthoniidae (Arachnida: Pseudoscorpiones). Methods: Five loci were sequenced for 75 Pseudotyrannochthoniidae samples collected across the globe. A matrix was compiled comprising 106 terminals and ~8800 bp, and phylogenetic analyses were performed to uncover relationships. Divergence time and ancestral range estimation analyses were used to reconstruct historical biogeography. Results: Pseudotyrannochthoniidae was monophyletic with high support but relationships among genera did not reflect current taxonomy and instead showed geographical structuring. Pseudotyrannochthoniidae originated in East Asia during the Middle Triassic and began diversifying in the Early Cretaceous. Main Conclusions: Diversity and distributional patterns of dragon pseudoscorpions can be explained by the interplay of continental vicariance through Pangaean breakup, and biome shifts via the spread of temperate habitats in the Cretaceous and their ongoing distributional fluctuations. Pseudotyrannochthoniidae diversification began in the Early Cretaceous as they dispersed with temperate forests across the Northern Hemisphere. Cretaceous vicariance, followed by widespread Holarctic extinction in the Late Tertiary–Quaternary, created their disjunct distribution at northern latitudes. Northern and Southern Hemisphere lineages diverged as Gondwana and Laurasia rifted, and Gondwanan breakup resulted in Afrotropical/Indomalayan and Austral clades. Gondwanan dinosaur faunae during the 20 Myr preceding the Cretaceous–Palaeogene (K/Pg) extinction included several lineages that were absent or poorly represented in Laurasian landmasses. Among these, the South American fossil record contains diverse abelisaurids, arguably the most successful groups of carnivorous dinosaurs from Gondwana in the Cretaceous, reaching their highest diversity towards the end of this period. Here we describe Koleken inakayali gen. et sp. n., a new abelisaurid from the La Colonia Formation (Maastrichtian, Upper Cretaceous) of Patagonia. Koleken inakayali is known from several skull bones, an almost complete dorsal series, complete sacrum, several caudal vertebrae, pelvic girdle and almost complete hind limbs. The new abelisaurid shows a unique set of features in the skull and several anatomical differences from Carnotaurus sastrei (the only other abelisaurid known from the La Colonia Formation). Koleken inakayali is retrieved as a brachyrostran abelisaurid, clustered with other South American abelisaurids from the latest Cretaceous (Campanian–Maastrichtian), such as Aucasaurus, Niebla and Carnotaurus. Leveraging our phylogeny estimates, we explore rates of morphological evolution across ceratosaurian lineages, finding them to be particularly high for elaphrosaurine noasaurids and around the base of Abelisauridae, before the Early Cretaceous radiation of the latter clade. The Noasauridae and their sister clade show contrasting patterns of morphological evolution, with noasaurids undergoing an early phase of accelerated evolution of the axial and hind limb skeleton in the Jurassic, and the abelisaurids exhibiting sustained high rates of cranial evolution during the Early Cretaceous. These results provide much needed context for the evolutionary dynamics of ceratosaurian theropods, contributing to broader understanding of macroevolutionary patterns across dinosaurs. The Neoproterozoic (>1160 to ~540 Ma) sedimentary record of the Tandilia System is reorganized into eight depositional sequences based on a detailed review of published sources and new lithological observations. The main compositional attributes compiled from the studied units were used to indicate changes in lithology regarding their origin. Epiclastic sections reveal supply and sources changes through the succession. Basement detritus was dominant during the deposition of the basal sequences turning drastically to a volcanic affinity dominance. The carbonate sections, dominated by intra-basinal components, were deposited in periods of rare or restricted detrital input. The older, described as a cap-dolostone, was related to bio-induced dolomite precipitation under a deglacial to interglacial context. The younger, a carbonate ramp, reveals to have been built by microbial activity adding high levels of oxygen to seawater correlated to a global oxygenation event. Compositional changes recorded in the shallow marine deposits of Tandilia could have been intricately linked to periods of tectonic and paleo-relief configurations, favoring the detrital supply into the basin, followed by relevant episodic biogeochemical changes. This study shows that the basinal-components progression was controlled by paleoclimate and paleoenvironments associated to the extensive interval between the rupture of the Rodinia to Gondwana paleogeographical framework. The Clarke River Shear Zone marks the boundary between the Thomson and Mossman orogens in the northeastern Tasmanides. To better understand the kinematic history of this east-northeast-trending shear zone, and its role during the tectonic history of eastern Gondwana, we investigated rock deformation along a segment of the Clarke River Shear Zone. Based on field observations, interpretation of aeromagnetic data and microstructural analysis, we show that the Clarke River Shear Zone experienced at least three phases of reactivation. Gently plunging stretching lineation and kinematic indicators, such as steeply plunging asymmetric folds and asymmetric porphyroclasts, correspond to an early phase of sinistral strike-slip ductile shearing. Subsequent general dextral shear deformation is suggested based on the presence of S-tectonites, symmetric porphyroclasts and kinematic indicators with dominant dextral and subordinate sinistral shear senses. This phase, which occurred under amphibolite-facies metamorphic conditions, was contemporaneous with the emplacement of the Craigie Tonalite, for which we obtained a new zircon U–Pb crystallisation age of 410.3 ± 1 Ma. A later reactivation phase along the Clarke River Shear Zone, under brittle conditions, is indicated by the presence of cataclasite zones and chlorite–epidote alteration. Based on our findings, and regional information on the tectono-magmatic evolution of northeastern Queensland, we suggest that the Clarke River Shear Zone was possibly a sinistral transform fault during the Silurian. During the Devonian, it is possible that deformation along the Clarke River Shear Zone was related to the transition between the non-retreating subduction zone in the north, and the highly mobile (retreating) plate boundary farther south. However, the dextral kinematic component associated with this deformation is not fully explained. Brittle deformation, likely associated with dextral transpression during the Carboniferous, marked the last stage of activity along the Clarke River Shear Zone. The Clarke River Shear Zone records three phases of reactivation during the Silurian–Carboniferous. Ductile dextral general shear deformation along the Clarke River Shear Zone occurred at ca 410 Ma, based on zircon U–Pb dating of a syn-tectonic intrusion. Underpinning almost every Paleozoic paleogeographic reconstruction and tectonic model of the Lachlan Orogen is the interpretation of the structural geology related to crustal collision and amalgamation. Bounding the eastern margin of the Lachlan Orogen is a north-trending corridor of Cambrian–Ordovician turbidites that in northeast Victoria are recognised as the Pinnak Sandstone or previously known as the Mallacoota Beds. This sequence contains an accretionary prism related early S* foliation, syn-sedimentary dykes, slump structures, early faults or décollements and early quartz veins. These indicate anisotropic compaction by fluid extraction in a shallow marine turbidite sequence that underwent localised deformation (D1), which can be attributed to the Benambran Orogeny (ca 450 Ma). There was a change in the rheological properties during the ensuing late Silurian D2 Bindian Orogeny (ca 420 Ma). This event produced north–south-trending upright, east-verging folds (F2) with a marked partitioning of strain between the different sedimentary units. Folds plunge south at ∼30°, are tight to isoclinal, with local collapsed hinges and limb thrusts. This D2 deformation along the paleo-Pacific margin involved dextral transpression and a southerly propagation of the deformation front. Superimposed on these structures is an east–west paleostress pattern and two episodes of faulting (D3 and D4). In the first, brittle strike-slip faults were accompanied by ductile folding related to east–west shortening during the Middle–Late Devonian Tabberabberan Orogeny (ca 385–370 Ma). These were accompanied by the emplacement of the Sandpatch Point Granite. The second episode (D4) of strike-slip faulting reactivated many of the earlier faults during further east–west shortening and was related to the Carboniferous Kanimblan Orogeny (ca 354–343 Ma). This is best seen close to the granite contact where the strong crystallised granite reinforced the contact metamorphosed greywacke sequence, inhibiting ductile deformation so that faults deformed in a brittle fashion. Eastern Australia was at a convergent plate boundary where a Middle–Late Ordovician turbiditic sequence was accreted to an accretionary prism. The Pinnak Sandstone contains a weak phyllosilicate alignment (S*), D1 faults and folds from localised deformation in the accretionary prism. The Silurian Bindian Orogeny produced upright east-verging, south-plunging F2 folds. Brittle faults overprint the Bindian tectonic features and are accompanied by minor folding, marking the transition into Middle Devonian and Carboniferous deformation and intrusive events. The kinematics and geometries associated with these deformation events reflect the changing tectonic regime along the paleo-Pacific margin of eastern Australia during east–west compression. The Dom Feliciano Belt is the South American part of an extensive Neoproterozoic orogenic system that developed during the late Cryogenian–early Cambrian close to the margin of southwest Gondwana. The link of its evolution with the tectonic processes in its African counterpart is still not well understood. P–T estimates, Lu–Hf garnet–whole-rock ages, U–Pb monazite SIMS ages and REE garnet and monazite data from samples of the Porongos and Passo Feio complexes indicate diachronous tectonic evolution of the central Dom Feliciano Belt foreland. Metasedimentary rocks of the eastern Porongos Complex reached previously estimated metamorphic peak conditions of ~ 560–580 °C and 5.8–6.3 kbar at 654 ± 2 Ma, based on Lu–Hf isochron garnet–whole-rock age data. This episode represents an early orogenic thickening in the foreland as a response to the beginning of the transpressive convergent evolution of the belt. The monazite age of 614 ± 6 Ma (U–Pb SIMS) is interpreted as associated with post-exhumation magmatic activity in the foreland and suggests that the eastern Porongos Complex was exhumed sometime between ca. 660 and 615 Ma. The main metamorphic and deformation event in the Porongos Complex's western region occurred at ~ 545–565 °C and 4.3–5.3 kbar at 563 ± 1 Ma (garnet–whole-rock Lu–Hf isochron age). The exhumation of this part of the foreland is dated using monazite crystallising during garnet breakdown and suggests retrograde metamorphism at 541 ± 7 Ma (U–Pb SIMS). The main metamorphic fabric in the Passo Feio Complex further to the west developed at 571 ± 2 Ma (garnet–whole-rock Lu–Hf isochron age) at 560–580 °C and 4.7–6.4 kbar. The western part of the Porongos Complex and the Passo Feio Complex have deformed at similar P–T conditions and apparent geothermal gradients at ca. 570–565 Ma. These regions record a second crustal thickening event in the Dom Feliciano Belt foreland and the orogenic front migration towards the west as a response to the onset of crustal thickening on the African side of this long-lived transpressive orogenic system. The depositional ages and provenance of the Paleozoic Araba and Naqus Formations along the northern Gondwanan margin in Egypt have remained uncertain due to a lack of index fossils. Resolving this issue is crucial for understanding regional geology during deposition and subsequent tectonic development. We integrate detailed facies analysis, anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS), paleomagnetism, and mineralogical data to elucidate the genesis and depositional ages of the Araba and Naqus Formations. Petrographic analyses identified seven distinct facies types, providing insights into sedimentary textures, maturity, and sources, with contributions from igneous and metamorphic sources indicated by heavy minerals. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis identified accessory minerals such as quartz, goethite, kaolinite, hematite, and anatase. Paleomagnetism isolated two magnetic components (CA and CN) providing the first robust paleo pole positions at Lat. = 70.8° N, Long. = 308.2° E and Lat. = 37.8° N, Long. = 233.1° E, indicating Cambrian and Carboniferous ages for the Araba and Naqus formations, respectively. Thermal demagnetization constrained these dates using established polarity timescales. Mineralogical data indicated that the Araba Formation originated from an igneous source, while the Naqus Formation had a mixed metamorphic-igneous provenance. The integrated AMS and paleomagnetic data reveal evidence of post-depositional deformation. Specifically, the clustering of maximum AMS axes in the NW–SE direction for both formations, suggests the initial presence of a primary depositional fabric. However, prevalent tectonic activity during the Cenozoic appears to have overprinted and modified this fabric through deformation related to rifting of the Gulf of Suez region. Through this novel multi-proxy approach, we have resolved long-standing uncertainties regarding the formations' depositional ages. Our study thereby provides the first chronostratigraphic framework for these strategically important sedimentary units, significantly advancing understanding of regional Paleozoic geology. As a tectonic window into the Lesser Himachal Himalaya, India, a group of metasediments and gneissic rocks, known as the Jutogh Group and Wangtu Gneissic Complex (WGC), occurs near the Jhakri thrust to the west and Wangtu to the east. In the Jutogh Group, chlorite-mica schist, garnet-staurolite schist and sillimanite-schist develop successively. The formation of chemically zoned garnet, which destabilized low-temperature assemblages, is predicted to be at 550–650 °C and 0.8–0.9 GPa by phase equilibria modelling. The retrograde segment consists of exhumation and cooling, yielding a tight clockwise P–T path. Moreover, textural observations and in-situ U-Th-Pb chemical dating indicate that metasedimentary rocks contain Cambrian monazites. These monazites have ages that cluster around 500 Ma. The ƐNd[1.8Ga] of Jutogh rocks ranges from − 1.0 to -8.1, with depleted mantle-model ages between 3.07 and 2.25 Ga. The garnet core and its leachates yield an Sm-Nd isochron age of 472 Ma. Another Sm-Nd isochron age of 454 Ma is obtained from biotite, garnet rim, and garnet rim leachate. According to phase equilibrium modelling, Sm-Nd dating, and monazite geochronology, the Jutogh Group experienced metamorphism along the northeast margin of Gondwana during the Cambro-Ordovician accretion. The Amazonian Craton is home to many Statherian to Calymmian taphrogenesis events that evolved over Large Igneous Provinces. The NW-SE faults on the Western Amazonian Igneous Belt (1.82–1.74Ga) and their reactivations, which facilitated the deposition of the Beneficente Group (1.76–1.60Ga), Prainha Formation (1.46Ga), and Alto Tapajós Group (Silurian-Devonian), are associated with these events in the southwest Amazonian Craton. Mineralogical composition, whole-rocks geochemistry, and Nd-Sr-Pb isotopic data show that the three sedimentary successions originated in the provinces of Rondônia-Juruena and Tapajós Parima, particularly during two rift stages. Beneficente Group deposition is associated with Paleoproterozoic Rift 1, while the Prainha Formation represents the post-rift 1, and Alto Tapajós Group deposition is associated with Paleozoic Rift 2. In addition, the Prainha Formation also received sediment supply from the Sunsás Province. These three sedimentary successions have an intrinsic relationship with the reworking of the local basement and their own reworking that occurred from the Paleoproterozoic to the Paleozoic. Autochthonous reworking, particularly in the Colíder and Beneficente groups, is demonstrated by Ti-magnetite grains, volcanic and arenite fragments in the Prainha Formation sublitharenite, and by angular microcline grains, high Au content, a Pb whole-rock isochron yielding the 1.796±0.096Ga age, and by ${\varepsilon _{Sr\left(0 \right)}}$ ε Sr 0 vs 1/Rb relationship in Alto Tapajós Group. ${\varepsilon _{Nd\left(t \right)}}$ ε Nd t and flat REE patterns and some positive Eu anomalies in the Prainha Formation and Alto Tapajós Group record the influence of the mafic rocks of the Mata-Matá suite. A Pb-Pb whole-rock isochron allowed hydrothermal activity recognition at 1.32Ga in the Vila do Carmo Formation. This event was ratified by positive Eu/Eu* (1.3–1.43), Ce/Ce* (1.24–2.84), and Gd/Gd*(~1.5) anomalies. Finally, Nd model ages, geochemistry, and Sr isotopes allow for correlating the local basement and the overlaying sedimentary successions along the Columbia and Gondwana boundaries. Comprehensive U-Pb detrital zircon geochronology of Ediacaran sandstones from Oman indicates that they originated from Neoproterozoic basement with a peak magmatic age of ca. 850-780 Ma (Tonian), with lesser Paleoproterozoic and Ediacaran sources and renewed magmatic input starting at ca. 550 Ma. Comparison with detrital zircons from the Arabian-Nubian and NW Indian Shields supports an eastern Gondwana affinity for the Ediacaran succession of Oman. Tonian basement sediment sources are present in Oman. Sources for older Paleoproterozoic zircons (ca. 2500 and 1800 Ma) are not found in Oman but are known from the cratonic Indian Shield. The signal of the main magmatic events of the juvenile Arabian-Nubian Shield, peaking at ca. 640-620 Ma, is rare or absent in the Ediacaran rock succession of Oman. However, deformed Ediacaran clastic units with an Arabian-Nubian Shield affinity occur in western Oman. Influx of latest Ediacaran-early Cambrian zircons (550-525 Ma) is interpreted as due to final Cambrian Angudan/Malagasy orogeny-related magmatism. These results, together with new ages for volcano-sedimentary terranes in the subsurface of SW Oman and seismic observations, support the interpretation that the Ediacaran succession of Oman was deposited along the western, passive margin of the Greater Indian Shield, on the eastern (east and west in this paper refer to present-day coordinates) side of the Mozambique Ocean. Oman then collided with the Arabian-Nubian Shield in the early Cambrian, when the Angudan/Malagasy orogeny led to final consolidation of Gondwana. Our data support the inference that the youngest and final suture between the Indian and Arabian Shields lies in the subsurface of Oman along the early Cambrian western deformation front. [Objective] The Prydz Bay belt in East Antarctica recorded two significant tectono-thermal events, the Grenvillian event and the Pan-African event, which are considered to be closely related to the evolution of the Rodinia and Gondwana supercontinents. However, the geological history and the tectonic nature of the two events remain controversial. [Methods] Mineralogical and petrological analyses, phase equilibria modelling and zircon geochronology are combined to investigate the spinel-cordierite granulite from the Mirror Peninsula in order to better understand the tectono-thermal history of the Prydz Bay belt. [Results] The spinel-cordierite granulite contains different stages of mineral assemblages. The major stage of mineral assemblage involves cordierite, spinel, biotite, sillimanite, K-feldspar and minor garnet and ilmenite. The later stage of mineral assemblage is indicated by the emergence of magnetite as the increasing volumes of biotite and cordierite. Minor garnet and corundum are locally preserved, implying the mineral reaction 'g+cor→sp+sill' and more garnet and corundum in the peak stage. The garnet grains consist of 70%-72% almandine, 20%-22% pyrope, -4% grossularite and -4% spessartine. The XFe (Fe2+/(Fe2++Mg2+)) of representative garnet grains ranges from 0.77 to 0.80. The spinel exhibits an XFe range from 0.80 to 0.86. Different cordierite grains have similar compositions with Al of 3.89-3.93 a.p.f.u (atoms per formula unit) and XFe of 0.32-0.36. Biotite has high TiO2 (4.13%-5.23%) and Ti (0.23-0.30 a.p.f.u). K-feldspar grains consist of 78%-85% orthoclase, 15%-23% albite and -1% anorthite. Based on the mineral compositions and phase equilibrium modelling, the pressure-temperature (P-T) conditions of the major stage of mineral assemblage are constrained to 870-910 °C and 0.64-0.69 GPa, followed by later retrogression to 810-820°C and 0.49-0.53 GPa. A peak stage with higher P-T conditions (T>910 °C, P>0.69 GPa) can be inferred based on the relict peak minerals and characteristic mineral compositions (e.g. Ti in biotite). Zircon grains commonly show core-mantle-rim structures in cathodoluminescence (CL) images. The LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb dating analyses reveal a wide age range from 613±7 Ma to 877±9 Ma (except a maximum of 916±11 Ma) for the cores. The zircon bright rims yield a weighted mean age of 526±8 Ma with a wide range of Th/U (0.06-1.23), mostly higher than 0.1. [Conclusion] Based on the results, a few conclusions can be drawn: (1) The spinel-cordierite granulite recorded medium-low pressure/high-ultrahigh temperature metamorphism with a clockwise P-T evolution path and high dT/dP. (2) The results of zircon geochronological analysis show that zircon cores mainly record U-Pb ages in the range of 800--600 Ma, younger than typical ages of Grenvillian events, which may reflect younger inherited zircon cores or significant isotopic resetting. (3) The age of -530 Ma of zircon rims is interpreted to represent the post-peak cooling stage of the Pan-African tectono-thermal event. Burmese amber preserves a diverse assemblage of Cretaceous arachnids, and among pseudoscorpions (Arachnida: Pseudoscorpiones), ten species in five families have already been named. Here, we describe a new fossil species from Burmese amber in the pseudoscorpion family Hyidae, providing detailed measurements, photographs and 3D-models from synchrotron scanning. Based on morphology, the new fossil, Hya fynni sp. nov. is placed in the genus Hya, and is nearly identical to extant species in the genus, except for the position of trichobothrium est on the pedipalpal chela, thereby indicating extreme morphological stasis in this invertebrate lineage over the last 99 million years. Hya fynni represents the first described fossil species in Hyidae, and the third described Burmese fossil in the superfamily Neobisioidea. It also joins the garypinid, Amblyolpium burmiticum, in representing the oldest fossil records for extant pseudoscorpion genera. Considering proposed divergence dates, the newly described fossil species bolsters a Gondwanan origin for Hyidae, and provides evidence for the "Late Jurassic Rifting" hypothesis for the Burma Terrane, in which this landmass rifted from Gondwana in the Late Jurassic and collided with Eurasia by the Cretaceous/Eocene. Like Hya species today, H. fynni likely inhabited humicolous microhabitats in tropical forests on the Burma Terrane, supporting ecological niche stasis for this family since the Mesozoic. The evolution of the Gondwana along the flank of the West African Craton was complex and is far from understood. Subduction-related activity along this margin spanned between c. 750 and 500 Ma. Sections close to African cratons record the earliest stages, while Autochthonous and Allochthonous domains of the Variscan Belt preserve the latest stages of the arc system, essentially between c. 540 and 500 Ma. The geochemistry of the Ediacaran-early Cambrian siliciclastic series deposited along this Cadomian active margin preserves the evolutionary history of their sources, which are related to activity in the arc and nearby continental areas. In this sense, the SW Iberian Massif (Ossa-Morena Complex) preserves a section of this Ediacaran-early Cambrian peri-Gondwanan arc. Its evolution can be tracked through the characterization of the subduction-related magmatism (including the Mérida Massif) and coeval metasedimentary record (Serie Negra Group and Malcocinado Formation) during a time interval spanning almost 100 m.y., from pre-602 Ma to at least c. 534 Ma. This study reveals that arc magmatism is closely linked with synorogenic deposition in a complex way so far unexplored. Arc recycling is revealed by the isotopic equivalence of synorogenic strata to the first magmatic event (pre-602 Ma), and by geochronological data of the arc-building pulses. The earliest magmatic pulses (c. 602–550 Ma) are characterized by significant crustal input, likely favoured by subduction erosion. Subsequently, magmatism evolved towards larger mantle involvement (c. 540–534 Ma), likely associated with progressive variation in the slab angle. These slab-mantle-upper plate interactions generated changes in the arc dynamics leading to an extensional setting with alkaline magmatism during the Cambrian. This review proposes a model of petrogenetic and geodynamic arc evolution between the Ediacaran and the Early Cambrian. We propose that the 495-470 Ma Ollo de Sapo magmatism in the Iberian Massif was the result of a mantle plume event in the Furongian-Early Ordovician. This plume was located beneath the northwestern margin of Gondwana and caused rapid and extensive melting of Ediacaran arc-related crustal rocks and their derived sediments. Mafic magmas due to plume partial melting underplated the crust and were emplaced at mid-lower crustal levels (~15km), and provided the heat for crustal melting. Manifestations of the plume include (i) pronounced magnetic anomalies in the region which match the distribution of Ollo de Sapo rocks, (ii) the Toledanian unconformity (and gap), which is attributed to thermal doming, and (iii) the significant thickness variations in Lower to Middle Ordovician sedimentary successions in adjacent areas. In a more regional context, we infer that the plume was one of a cluster of plumes impacting the Gondwana periphery and that it contributed to the birth and development of the Rheic Ocean throughout Gondwana margin breakup. The Clarens Formation is a widespread aeolianite deposited over southern Gondwana and represents the final phase of erg evolution in the main Karoo Basin during the Early Jurassic. Previous age assessments of the formation hinge on limited detrital zircon data, supplemented by relative ages from the biostratigraphy and geochronology of the adjacent Karoo units. This study refines the depositional history of the Clarens Formation, including its sediment source dynamics as well as basin‐wide geochronological framework, based on U–Pb dating of detrital zircon grains, together with petrographic and sedimentological characterization. The abundant presence of heavy minerals like zircon, tourmaline and rutile suggests large‐scale detritus recycling, while the uniform sandstone composition on a regional scale is an indication of sediment homogenisation across the basin. Based on the prominent detrital zircon age fractions, the sediments are interpreted as having been reworked from pre‐existing rocks of the Karoo Supergroup (Permian), the Damara and Saldania Orogenic belts (650–490 Ma), whereas minor sources can be assigned to the Namaqua‐Natal Mobile Belt (1.35–1.1 Ga) and the western Sierras Pampeanas (1.30–1.33 Ga). Unstable minerals (hornblende, garnet, titanite, feldspar) provide evidence for a nearby granitic source east and southeast of the basin, related to likely Grenvillian rocks (1.0–1.3 Ga). An Early Jurassic zircon age fraction is linked to volcanic activity in the Chon Aike Magmatic Province that, at the time, was situated south and southwest of the study area. Maximum depositional ages derived from these detrital zircon dates suggest that the sedimentation of the Clarens Formation spanned an interval of ~10 Ma during the Pliensbachian and early Toarcian. More specifically, the lower part of the formation is of early Pliensbachian age or younger (~191–192), while the upper part is of early Toarcian age or younger (~181–183 Ma). Unveiling buried volcanic systems has been made easier through the application of high-resolution geophysical datasets in recent times. This improves the elucidation of systems related to caldera formation and collapse. An early Cretaceous bimodal volcanic suite, the Bumbeni Complex, crops out in a limited region of northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa and is dominated by felsic ignimbrites and rhyolitic lavas. However, the extent and evolution of the complex has remained ambiguous as much of the sequence is buried beneath recent sedimentary cover. This study has identified five nested caldera systems forming a caldera complex ~ 20 km in diameter through high-resolution aeromagnetic and radiometric surveys. Individual calderas are resolved by prominent positive and negative anomalies ranging from − 200 to + 300 nT based on International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF) corrected Reduced to Pole (RTP) data. Field evidence and borehole core data indicate that caldera formation was accompanied by voluminous ignimbrite deposition with both intra- and extra-caldera volcaniclastic facies developed. Anomaly D, which represents the only exposed caldera structure within the complex, provides insights into the intrusive and extrusive rock types including syenite and granitic ring dykes, and ignimbrite units, resolved in radiometric data. Geophysical interpretations allow for the construction of an approximate relative-time-sequenced evolutionary model for the complex. Susceptibility modelling of the complex has identified circumferential dykes forming the margins of the calderas with a possible magma reservoir developed at ~ 4 km depth. The identification of silicic caldera systems in this region of southern Africa may have causal affiliations to the initiation and propagation of Gondwana rifting along the emergent northern KwaZulu-Natal margin. The subglacial landscape of Antarctica records and influences the behaviour of its overlying ice sheet. However, in many places, the evolution of the landscape and its control on ice sheet behaviour have not been investigated in detail. Using recently released radio-echo sounding data, we investigate the subglacial landscape of the Evans–Rutford region of West Antarctica. Following quantitative analysis of the landscape morphology under ice-loaded and ice-unloaded conditions, we identify 10 flat surfaces distributed across the region. Across these 10 surfaces, we identify two distinct populations based on clustering of elevations, which potentially represent remnants of regionally coherent pre-glacial surfaces underlying the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS). The surfaces are bounded by deeply incised glacial troughs, some of which have potential tectonic controls. We assess two hypotheses for the evolution of the regional landscape: (1) passive-margin evolution associated with the break-up of the Gondwana supercontinent or (2) an extensive planation surface that may have been uplifted in association with either the West Antarctic Rift System or cessation of subduction at the base of the Antarctic Peninsula. We suggest that passive-margin evolution is the most likely of these two mechanisms, with the erosion of glacial troughs adjacent to, and incising, the flat surfaces likely having coincided with the growth of the WAIS. These flat surfaces also demonstrate similarities to other identified surfaces, indicating that a similar formational process may have been acting more widely around the Weddell Sea embayment. The Precambrian Southern Granulite terrane of south India has a crustal evolution history broadly bracketed between the late Archean and Cambrian with records of polyphase deformation, metamorphism, and magmatism. The Southern Granulite terrane comprises distinct crustal blocks bounded by shear/suture zones that have been variably correlated with supercontinent fragments including Madagascar, Sri Lanka, Africa, Eastern Ghats, and Antarctica. However, the timing and mechanism of assembly of different crustal blocks within the Southern Granulite terrane and its linkages with counterparts in East Gondwana are highly debated. This study aimed to unravel the complex crustal evolutionary pattern of the terrane by generating robust zircon U-Pb/Hf isotopic data from basement charnockites, gneisses, granitoids, and alkaline intrusive units from the central part of Southern Granulite terrane and comparing these results with similar data from different East Gondwanan terranes. The study identified four distinct crustal growth episodes in the Madurai block: (1) Neoarchean-early Paleoproterozoic, (2) Rhyacian-Orosirian, (3) late Tonian, and (4) Ediacaran-Cambrian. Analysis of zircon Hf isotope data revealed that the first two events are marked by juvenile magmatic signatures, whereas the latter two are distinctly associated with intense reworking and remelting of older crust with no significant juvenile input. Our new results combined with existing data from other Gondwanan terranes suggest a common Paleoproterozoic ancestry for the Southern Granulite terrane and its corresponding Gondwanan fragments, proposing a revision to the existing geodynamic models. Detrital zircon provenance analysis plays a key role in reconstructions of past tectonic and sedimentary environments. However, non-unique (or even erroneous) interpretations can be introduced due to the inherent limitations of both zircon provenance analysis (fertility bias, recycling) and those of single-proxy provenance systems in general. Apatite crystallizes in a wider range of lithologies than zircon, and can thus facilitate more detailed source reconstructions. In this study, detrital apatite analysis of Cryogenian to Ordovician sandstones in the Cathaysia Block was carried out in comparison with detrital zircon data for a better understanding of the source-sink process on the northern margin of Gondwana. In contrast to the abundant Grenvillian (1300-900 Ma) detrital zircons of igneous origin, detrital apatites show major Pan-African (650-500 Ma) age peaks that are mostly derived from metamorphic rocks (52%-72%). The apatite data show that the Cathaysia Block mainly received detritus from western Australia and India during the late Neoproterozoic to early Paleozoic, with much lower affinities to East Antarctica and the terranes of Iran-Turkey. Provenance variations include a shift with time in the major age populations from ca. 900 Ma to 600 Ma with a decrease in metamorphic apatite (from 72% to 52% of all grains) in the late Cryogenian, an increase in high-grade metamorphic apatite (from 27% to 56%) in the late Ediacaran-Cambrian, and an increase in igneous apatite (from 33% to 45% of all grains) in the Early Ordovician. In contrast, detrital zircon data could only reveal the source change in the late Ediacaran. These provenance switches were likely caused by the unroofing of Pan-African orogens (640-490 Ma) and subsequent erosion of their exposed cores, due to the rapid uplift of source rocks formed in the Pan-African orogens during the Gondwana assembly. Sardinia (Italy) represents one of the most comprehensive cross-sections of the Variscan orogen. The metamorphic and structural complexity characterizing its axial zone still presents many unresolved issues in the current state of knowledge. The data presented from the structural study of the entire axial zone of this area have allowed the authors to propose a subdivision into two new structural complexes. In particular, a younger complex is identified as the New Gneiss Complex, containing remnants of an older and higher-grade metamorphic complex defined as the Old Gneiss Complex. The structural and geometric relationships between the two complexes suggest the redefinition of the axial zone of Sardinia as part of the intracontinental East Variscan Shear Zone/medium-temperature Regional Mylonitic Complex. Comparable relationships are also highlighted in many other areas of the Variscan chain (e.g., Morocco, Corsica, Maures Massif, and Argentera Massif). Extending this new structural interpretation to other axial zones of the South European Variscan orogen could provide new hints for reconstructing the collision boundaries between Gondwana and Laurussia in the late Carboniferous to the early Permian periods. The opening of Neo-Tethys within Gondwanaland during the Guadalupian (transition signified a pivotal transgressive event) in the Permian Period. Consequently, an attempt has been undertaken to elucidate the sequence stratigraphy and palaeodepositional settings of fluvial sedimentary deposits encompassing coal and shale sediments within the Godavari Valley Coalfield, South India. The Total Organic Carbon (TOC) content across the examined samples exhibits a discernible range from 0.07 to 65.53 wt%, with reactive carbon, measured as Pyrolyzable Carbon (PC), displaying variations from 0.02 to 15.93 wt% and non-reactive carbon, characterized, as Residual Carbon (RC), spans a percentage range of 0–66.86 wt% within the selected samples. The predominant organic matter manifests as type III kerogen, except Sh-47, where type II kerogen is identified. The combination of Rock–Eval pyrolysis alongside palynofacies analysis facilitates the differentiation of significant system tracts arising from relative sea level fluctuations within the deposited terrestrial sequences. These tracts include swampy and flooded palaeomires settings. Terminologies denoting system tracts within the sequences are indicted as T-lst, T-hst, T-tst and T-mfs corresponding to the Low Stand System Tract (LST), High Stand System Tract (HST), Transgressive System Tract (TST) and Maximum Flooding Surface (MFS) respectively. A noteworthy one and half cycles are discerned within the sequence, predicted on Amorphous Organic Matter (AOM), TOC, Hydrogen Index (HI), PC and Gelification Index (GI) values. In the initial cycle, T-mfs is identified based on the preponderance of fluorescent AOM, coupled with the highest value of HI and PC. The ratio of opaque/translucent phytoclasts serves as a discriminant in delineating the boundaries of T-lst, T-tst and T-hst within the sequences, corroborating the aforementioned observation. This research serves as a preliminary assessment of the system tracts within fluvial environments. Chitinozoans recovered from one section of the Middle Devonian Los Monos Formation in the TCB X-1001-Tacobo borehole, sub-Andean basin of Bolivia, have been analysed. Eleven from the eighteen processed cutting samples yielded specimens that allowed taxonomic study. Eleven genera and thirty-five chitinozoan species were identified from the Los Monos Formation with four of them recorded for the first time in Western Gondwana. Ancyrochitina biconstricta, Ancyrochitina parisi, Angochitina galarzae and Ramochitina boliviensis are among the most relevant taxa restricted to Western Gondwana that support the affinity with this paleocontinent. One new species, Lagenochitina tacobensis sp. nov. is described, and Ramochitina candelariaensis sp. nov. (n. n.) is formally erected. The chitinozoan assemblage reinforces the late Eifelian–middle Givetian age previously proposed by organic-walled phytoplankton and miospores for this section of the TCB X-1001-Tacobo borehole. A new local chitinozoan biozonation based on the chitinozoan assemblages is proposed and a revision of the current chitinozoan biozonation for Western Gondwana and Bolivia is recommended. The end of the Ordovician witnessed major perturbations in the ecosystem, seriously affecting global marine biodiversity. Nevertheless, some marine organism groups and their crisis-bound palaeogeographic distribution are still understudied. Among the outliers are eunicid polychaetes, even though they flourished and diversified extensively during the Ordovician. A collection of seven genera of jaw-bearing polychaetes, including the new ramphoprionid genus Spitiprion Tonarová, Suttner, & Hints, with type new species of Spitiprion khannai Tonarová, Suttner, & Hints, is described here from Katian (Upper Ordovician) deposits of Spiti, northern India. The new species is preserved as isolated maxillae and a jaw cluster, and 3D models of the maxillary apparatus are reconstructed based on submicron-CT. Along with the scolecodonts, a low-diversity assemblage of chitinozoans was recovered, comprising five genera. The Beyşehir-Hoyran Nappes, one of the tectonostratigraphic units of the Taurides, are thought to be originated from the Izmir-Ankara Ocean (northern branch of Neotethys). In this study, Late Paleozoic rock units from the blocks of Beyşehir-Hoyran Nappes were studied in detail using foraminiferal assemblages in two different locations from the southwest of Karaman City (southern Turkey). In both places, blocks/slices and pebbles of various origins are embedded within a highly sheared matrix of Late Cretaceous Age, and the whole unit can be regarded as a sedimentary mélange. The ages of the blocks from the southwest of Karaman City range from the Late Serpukhovian (Late Mississippian) to Late Capitanian (Middle Permian) with some depositional breaks (e.g., Bashkirian, Kasimovian). Combined with the previous data from the Mersin Mélange, which also include the remnants of the Beyşehir-Hoyran Nappes, our new findings suggest that a shallowing-upward sequence, characterized by a shallow water environment with foraminifera-bearing limestones, was deposited over the Tournaisian pelagic sequence in the Beyşehir-Hoyran Nappes till the Early Moscovian (Early Middle Pennsylvanian). This shallowing-upward sequence in the Beyşehir-Hoyran Nappes could be related to the Late Paleozoic Glaciation on the Gondwana supercontinent (Glacial II), which resulted in a sea-level drop and deposition of platform carbonates during the Viséan–Early Moscovian (Middle Mississippian to Early Middle Pennsylvanian) time interval. The absence of the main part of the Middle-Upper Pennsylvanian deposits (continental phase during the Middle Moscovian–Middle Gzhelian) in the Beyşehir-Hoyran Nappes can be mainly attributed to the occurrence of a mantle plume and partially to the effect of Late Paleozoic Gondwanan Glaciation (Glacial III). Progressive uplifting by the buoyant mantle plume material has resulted in rifting at the center of the basin where the Beyşehir-Hoyran Nappes have deposited. The rifting process led to tectonic destabilization of the platform in the basin, causing accumulation of the Upper Gzhelian (uppermost Pennsylvanian) detrital limestone with broken and abraded foraminiferal shells. Following this, deep basinal conditions prevailed during the Late Asselian–Kungurian (Early Permian), as revealed in the Mersin Mélange, where radiolarian cherts are associated with continental within-plate lavas of extreme incompatible trace element enrichment. Similar processes were responsible for the continual deposition of detrital limestones in the same basin until the end of Late Capitanian (Middle Permian). Based on all these, the uplifting process followed by rift-related volcanic rocks and detrital limestones can be interpreted as the opening of the Izmir-Ankara Ocean (northern Neotethys). Geochemical compositions can be used to determine the tectonic setting of sedimentary basins, while where the link of source to sink is no longer preserved, detrital zircon age patterns can aid in resolving the original basin setting. The metasedimentary Legoupil Formation, located at Cape Legoupil and the Schmidt Peninsula, could give a hint for the tectonic evolution of Antarctic Peninsula. In this contribution, we constrain the sedimentary provenance of the Legoupil Formation through geochemistry and detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology. The petrography and geochemical features indicate that the provenance of the Legoupil Formation could be felsic rocks. Detrital zircon grains record a steady supply of Permian and Ordovician material into the Legoupil Formation. The youngest concordant zircon ages of 262 Ma suggest that the depositional time of Legoupil Formation is no older than Late Permian. The detrital zircon age spectrum of Legoupil Formation suggests that the Legoupil Formation sediments should be derived from regional sources endemic to western Gondwana prior to its breakup. Together with the previous studies, geochemistry and detrital zircons reflect an active continental margin tectonic setting and the detrital zircon spectra of Legoupil Formation are similar to the ones deposited in forearc tectonic setting. To be a quantitative and testable tectonic model, plate tectonics requires spherical geometry and spherical kinematics in terms of finite rotations conveniently parametrized by their angle and axis and described by unit quaternions. In treatises on "Plate Tectonics" infinitesimal, instantaneous, and finite rotations, absolute and relative rotations are said to be applied to model the motion of tectonic plates. Even though these terms are strictly defined in mathematics, they are often casually used in geosciences. Here, their definitions are recalled and clarified as well as the terms rotation, orientation, and location on the sphere. For instance, infinitesimal rotations refer to a mathematical limit, when the angle of rotation tends to zero. Their rules do not apply to finite rotations, no matter how small their finite angles of rotation are. Mathematical approaches applying appropriate and feasible assumptions to model spherical motion of tectonic plates over geological times of hundreds of millions of years are derived including (i) sequences of incremental finite rotations, (ii) sequences of accumulating successive concatenations of finite rotations, and (iii) continuous rotations in terms of fully transient quaternions. The incremental and the accumulating approaches provide complementary views. While the relative Euler pole appears to migrate in the latter, it appears fixed in the former. Path, mean, and instantaneous velocity of the migrating Euler pole are derived as well as the angular and trajectoral velocity of the rotational motion about it. The approaches are illustrated by a geological example with actual data and a numerical yet geologically inspired example with artificial data. The former revisits the three‐plate scenario with stationary axes of two "absolute" rotations implying transient "relative" rotations about a migrating Euler pole and employs a proper plate‐circuit argument to determine them numerically without resorting to approximations. The latter applies an involved interplay of incremental and accumulating modeling inducing split–join cycles to approximate sinusoidal trajectories as reported to record plates' motion during the Gondwana breakup. Arc-arc amalgamation occurs during the evolution of composite orogens at convergent plate margins and plays a critical role in controlling accretionary patterns and processes. The eastern Junggar terrane in the southern Central Asian Orogenic Belt underwent a long-lived subduction-accretion process in the Paleozoic, but whether and how the Yemaquan and Dananhu-Harlik arcs were amalgamated remain debatable. A systematic U-Pb-Hf-O isotopic study was conducted on zircons from Silurian granitic rocks in the Yemaquan arc. The U-Pb dating results suggest that these rocks were emplaced at 433-422 Ma and inherited abundant 536-435 Ma zircons representing a predominant magmatic episode in the Yemaquan arc. Their positive εHf(t) values and young Hf model ages indicate that the Yemaquan arc is dominated by juvenile basement with significant crustal growth during the Neoproterozoic to early Paleozoic. The variations in zircon Eu/Eu*, εHf(t), and δ18O values reveal that the Yemaquan arc experienced remarkable crustal thickening and remobilization at ca. 450 Ma, similar to the northern Dananhu-Harlik arc, and this was followed by extension that initiated at ca. 420 Ma. These features support the amalgamation of these two arcs occurring ca. 450-420 Ma. Integrated with regional data, we correlated this amalgamation event in the eastern Junggar terrane with the orogenic event in the Chinese Altai terrane, and we propose a middle Paleozoic tectonic evolution model in the eastern Junggar-Altai area from arc assembly to dispersal in association with a transition in accretionary mode. The Devonian System in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding areas is widely distributed, diverse in lithotypes and rich in fossils. It records the crucial processes of continuous subduction and reduction of the Paleo-Asian Ocean in the northern hemisphere and the transformation of the Proto-Tethys Ocean into the Paleo-Tethys Ocean in the southern hemisphere. Thus, it is of great significance for explaining the global paleogeographic evolution, tectonic activities and biodiversity changes during this critical period. The blocks on both sides of the southern Tienshan suture zone and the Longmu Co-Shuanghu-Changning-Menglian suture zone belong to different sedimentary systems and paleobiogeographic realms and regions, showing important tectonic paleogeographic partitioning significance. The two suture zones represent the main branches of the Paleo-Asian Ocean and the Paleo-Tethys Ocean, respectively, and on this basis the Devonian System can be subdivided into three types: the Tienshan type, the Tethys type and the Gondwana type. Based on recent research progress on the Devonian stratigraphy and paleontology in combining provenance analysis and biotic characteristics in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and surrounding areas, this paper aims to establish the latest integrative stratigraphic framework and conduct paleogeographic reconstruction, providing foundation for exploring the geological evolution and dynamic mechanisms of various terranes and blocks in the northern margin of Gondwana. The results indicate that the North Qiangtang, South Qiangtang, Simao, Baoshan and Tengchong terranes, as well as the Himalaya Tethys Zone and the South China Block have affinities with the Indian Block, while the Lhasa Terrane has affinities with the Australian Block, and may be located between the South China and Australian blocks. In the Emsian (Early Devonian), the South China Block separated from the northern margin of Gondwana, a process that was accompanied by the opening of the Jinshajiang-Ailaoshan Ocean. In the Middle Devonian, the mid-oceanic ridge of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean expanded rapidly, corresponding with a global sea-level rise, the widespread development of carbonate platforms and nadir values of Devonian seawater strontium isotopes. By the Late Devonian, the Paleo-Tethys Ocean had reached a considerable size, leading to abundant occurrences of Upper Devonian radiolarian cherts in the Paleo-Tethys suture zones. The Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding areas have a long and complex tectonic evolutionary history. Cratons and blocks, such as northern India, Lhasa, Qiangtang, Qaidam and Central Qilian, and their in-between orogenic belts constitute the main part of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. During the Cambrian Period, most of these cratons and blocks were on the northwestern periphery of Gondwana, and were associated with the surrounding blocks, e.g. Arabian, Central Iran, Afghanistan, Tarim, Alxa, North China, South China and Sibumasu through the Proto-Tethys Ocean. The Cambrian stratigraphic sequences on these stable blocks are composed of mixed siliciclastic and carbonate rocks deposited in the shallow-water marine environments, and contain the trilobite assemblages of shelf facies. The Cambrian stratigraphic sequences in the Qilian tectonic belts, however, are characterized by the intermediate-basic igneous rocks and silicates formed in the Proto-Tethys Ocean, and contain the trilobite assemblages of deep-water slope facies. Combining with previous data, field observations and newly discovered fossils through funding by the Second Tibetan Plateau Scientific Expedition and Research, the general characteristics of the Cambrian strata in different tectonic units of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding areas have been summarized in this paper. Furthermore, efforts have been made to subdivide and correlate the Cambrian strata across these areas by utilizing available biostratigraphic and geochronological data. As a result, a comprehensive litho- and biostratigraphy chart has been compiled. Finally, from the biogeographic perspective, this paper also provides a brief overview of the Cambrian paleogeographical reconstruction of the major tectonic blocks, and discusses the problems associated with the evolution of the Proto-Tethys tectonic belt. The Paleogene is a crucial period when terrestrial and marine ecosystems recovered from major disruptions and gradually approached their modern states. In the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding regions, the Paleogene also represents a significant phase of tectonic evolution in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau-Himalaya orogeny, reorganization of Asian climates, and evolution of biodiversity. Due to limitations in research conditions and understanding, there are still many controversies regarding stratigraphic divisions in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding regions In recent years, extensive studies on sedimentary petrology, magnetostratigraphy, and isotope dating have been conducted in the region. Numerous fossils have been discovered and reported, contributing to a more systematic understanding of biostratigraphy. These studies have laid a solid foundation for the comprehensive investigation of the stratigraphy, biotas and paleogeographic evolution of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding regions during the Paleogene. In this paper, we integrate recent research on fossils, isotopic dating, magnetostratigraphy, and geochemistry to refine the stratigraphic divisions and correlation framework of different tectonic units in the region, building upon previous studies. Since the Second Tibetan Plateau Scientific Expedition and Research, the knowledge of Paleogene floras has gradually expanded. This paper discusses the biostratigraphic significance of extinct and newly appeared taxa based on the latest dating results of these plant species. The new understanding of fossil species such as the "Eucalyptus" and Arecaceae establishes connections between the Paleogene flora of the Qinghai-Tibetan region and the biotas of Gondwana, specifically Oceania and South America. The evolutionary history of key taxa near the Yarlung Zangbo suture zone indicates that the collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates occurred approximately 65–54 Ma. Paleoelevation reconstructions, based on plant fossils, suggest that the Hengduan Mountain had already formed their current topographic pattern prior to the Early Oligocene. The warm and humid lowlands adjacent to the main suture zones in the Paleogene Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau served as the primary pathway for biota exchanges. The Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau experienced a unique geological evolution during the Jurassic, driven by the termination of the Palaeotethys and the reduction of the Neotethys. The Indian Plate separated from the northern margin of Gondwana and drifted northward from the Southern Hemisphere. Given that the timing of strata serves as the basis for reconstructing geological history, the present work aimed to develop a new multiple stratigraphic and chronologic framework for the Jurassic strata of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau region via a synthesis of the material on lithostratigraphy, palaeontology, iso-radiometric dating, magnetostratigraphy, and other techniques with an emphasis on recent progress and findings. The new framework included the Jurassic System from the four major subdivisions of the plateau: the Baryan Har, Qiangtang, Lhasa-Gandise, and Southern Xizang (Himalaya). Ultimately, a more complete, refined biostratigraphic sequence was proposed, comprising the most common fossils in the plateau and those that are stratigraphically significant for the Jurassic stratigraphy, including ammonites, bivalves, brachiopods, foraminifera, radiolarians, and dinoflagellate cysts for the marine strata, and pollen and spores, and charophytes for the terrestrial sediments. This biostratigraphic framework was correlated with the Jurassic international standard zonation of the Geological Time Scale 2020 via standard or representative species or genera of ammonites. Based on this framework, we constructed a lateral correlation of the Jurassic strata between different basins of the plateau. The palaeontologic correlation in the present work shows that the Lhasa-Gandise Block had a closer relationship with the Qiangtang Block than with the Southern Xizang Himalaya during the Jurassic Period. Meanwhile, the Lhasa-Gandise Block and Qiangtang Block shared similar marine fauna features of the north marginal East Tethys. This contrasts the opinion suggesting that the Yarlung Zangbo Tethys was a small back-arc basin. A combination of stratigraphical, palaeontological, and sedimentological analyses implies that the Bangong Co-Nujiang Tethys may have begun rifting in the Late Triassic, evolving to the birth at the late Early Jurassic with the formation of ocean crust. However, this resulted in failure after it grew into the climax at the end of the Middle Jurassic when the Qiangtang Block began subducting under the Lhasa-Gandise Block.
