Internal friction experiments (torsion at 1 Hz and flexion at 300 Hz) have been performed on pyrolitic and nuclear graphite after neutron irradiation at liquid nitrogen temperature.In the data at 1 Hz, two small peaks are observed at 112 K (P1'; 0·24 eV) and at 135 K (P1''; 0·28 eV), and a further sharp peak appears at 375 K (P3; 0-8 eV). The frequency factors are close to 1011 Hz. These peaks are described in terms of relaxation by point defects.Analysis of the effect of varying the neutron dose and of annealing on the P1' and P3 peaks shows that both peaks are due to the same defect species. At low temperature these defects have triclinic symmetry and give rise to P1' peak, but at higher temperatures their symmetry becomes monoclinic, as a result of thermal activation, and they then give rise to the P3 peak.Various types of defect structures are discussed in relation to the effects of annealing on a number of physical properties.

Samples of pyrolytic graphite and nuclear graphite have been irradiated at 27 or 77 K with neutrons and electrons. The dynamic Young's modulus has been studied by an isochronal annealing method and the internal friction has been measured as a function of temperature. The modulus changes with irradiation dose and annealings have been interpreted using a model based on the pinning of basal dislocations by interstitial atoms. The anneals have revealed an additional effect which was attributed to bonds between interstitial defects and atoms in the adjacent graphite layers. The observed modulus annealing stages are consistent with results of several authors.The internal friction data obtained after low temperature irradiation have been compared with those following room temperature irradiation. Three internal friction peaks have been observed again with activation energies of 0.24, 0.28 and 0.9 eV and interpreted by relaxation processes of interstitial defects. Another peak, at room temperature, has been analysed in terms of interaction between dislocations and point defects.Des irradiations à 27 ou 77 K aux électrons et aux neutrons ont été effectuées sur des échantillons de pyrographite recristallisé et de graphite nucléaire. La gutérison a été étudiée soit par recuits isochrones du module dYoung dynamique, soit par frottement intérieur en montées linétaires de température. Les évolutions du module avec la dose et les recuits ultérieurs sont décrits par un modèle dancrage des dislocations basales. Un effet additionnel est mis en évidence après recuit; il est attribué à la formation de couplages entre plans. Les stades de gutérison du module coincident avec ceux observés par dautres méthodes.Les résultats de frottement intérieur, après irradiation à basse température, sont comparés à ceux obtenus après irradiation à température ambiante. Les spectres de frottement intérieur préentent trois pics dont les énergies dactivation sont 0,24, 0,28 et 0,9 eV et qui sont interprétis par la relaxation de défauts interstitiels. Un autre pic apparaissant à température ambiante est commenté en termes dintéraction dislocations-défauts ponctuels.

Linfluence de l'écrouissage et des recuits à differentes températures sur les propriétés anélastiques de l'aluminium a été étudiée par différents expérimentateurs. Le comportement du métal écroui a pu alors etre réduit à quelques processus élémentaires:Nous avons étudié l'effet de défauts ponctuels supplémentaires sur le spectre dont nous venom de rappeler l'essentiel. En effet les propriétés anélastiques de l'aluminium écroui è base température sont modifiées par une irradiation aux neutrons à 80°K effectuée préalablement. Ces modifications peuvent se résumer de la maniére suivante:les pics de Niblett et Wilks B1, et de Bordoni B2 les pics PA, PB et PC interprétés en termes dinteraction défauts ponctuels-dislocations.Le pic de Niblett et Wilks BI n'apparait plus; le pic de Bordoni B2 dune part est de hauteur moindre, dautre-part croit plus par recuit à 220°K. Lanomalie de période est plus faible dans l'ensemble du spectre et en particulier à 10°K. Au-dessus de 200°K celle-ci augmente reversiblement jusque vers 300°K. Un pic de nature analogue au pic Pc de l'aluminium non irradié apparait des la première montée en température mais se recuit lors de son observation. Lensemble de ces résultats a été interprété en admettant dabord que les pics B1 et B2 résultent des propriétés intrinséques des dislocations, ensuite que ΔT/T0 est due à basse température (< 100°K)au mouvement des décrochements et à haute température au désancrage des dislocations et enfin que le pic Pc est la conséquence du désancrage thermomécanique des lignes de dislocation.The influence of cold-work and of subsequent annealing on the anelastic properties of aluminium has been studied by several workers. The behaviour of the cold worked metal can be analysed in terms of elementary processes such as:Niblett and Wilks peak (B1) and Bordoni peak (B2). The PA, PB and PC peaks due to the interaction between dislocations and point defects.Niblett and Wilks peak (B1) does not appear any more; by comparison with unirradiated aluminium, the Bordoni peak (B2) on one hand is lower, and on the other hand increases more after an anneal at 220°K. The period anomaly ΔT/T, is weaker in the whole spectrum and particularly at 10°K. Above 200°K, it increases (reversibly) until 300 °K. A peak similar to the PC peak of unirradiated aluminium is observed during the first temperature increase but this peak is annealed during observation.Those results have been interpreted with the following assumptions:The B1 and B2 peaks are due to intrinsic properties of dislocations.ΔT/T0 is induced by the movement of geometrical kinks at low temperature (< 100°K) and by break-away of dislocations at high temperature (between 200 and 300 °KThe peak observed near room temperature is a consequence of thermomechanical unpinning of dislocations from irradiation induced point defects.
