Honey is a natural sweet element that bees make with flower nectar, revered for its distinct flavor, nutritional value, and potential health benefits. Chilean beekeeping has a diverse range of honey varieties, many of which are unique. The quillay (Quillaja saponaria Molina, soapbark tree) is a Chilean endemic tree whose honey has not been studied in depth. We characterized various Chilean honeys with different botanical origins, with a particular focus on quillay tree honey, analyzing its total phenolic and flavonoid content and its antioxidant activities. Cytotoxicity and hepatoprotective activity were also evaluated using HuH-7 cells. The Spearman correlation between the percentage of quillay pollen in the honey samples and the total phenolic content (R = 0.72; p < 0.05), plus the oxygen radical absorbance capacity, suggests that compounds from quillay contribute to the overall antioxidant capacity of honey. Unifloral quillay honey extracts also protect hepatic cells from oxidative damage induced by peroxyl radicals generated by AAPH. This analysis sheds light on the potential of quillay tree honey, underscoring its significance as a natural source of bioactive phenolic compounds with possible hepatoprotective effects.

Propolis is a complex mixture formed from exudates that bees collect from plants and then mix with beeswax and their own salivary enzymes. Chilean propolis is characterized by the presence of phenolic compounds, which are considered responsible for the biological activities. The endemic species Escallonia pulverulenta (Ruiz and Pav.) Pers. [Escalloniaceae] is a recognized source of exudate to produce propolis. This study reports for the first time the chemical profile and antibacterial activity of E. pulverulenta exudate and leaves, as well as two samples of Chilean propolis. Palynological and morphological analysis showed the presence of E. pulverulenta as one of the main species in the propolis samples. UPLC-MS/MS analyses enabled the identification of phenolic acids in the leaves and in the propolis. Conversely, flavonoids are mainly present in exudates and propolis. Quercetin is the most abundant flavonol in the exudate, with similar concentrations in the propolis samples. Nevertheless, the main compound present in both samples of propolis was the flavanone pinocembrin. The antibacterial results obtained for exudate and propolis have shown a similar behavior, especially in the inhibition of Streptococcus pyogenes. These results show the importance of the exudates collected by the bees in the chemical composition and antibacterial capacity of propolis.

Honeybee pollen (HBP) chemical composition is highly variable conforming to the floral and geographical origin of the pollen grains. The beneficial effects and functional properties of the HBP are well-known and have been mainly attributed to their high content of antioxidant polyphenols. In this work, twelve HBPs samples from the Southern region of Chile (X Región de Los Lagos) were characterized for the first time according to their botanical origin, phenolic composition, and antioxidant activity. The in vitro gastrointestinal digestion assay was done to simulate the human upper digestive tract. Selected honeybee pollen extracts (HBPEs) were assessed as bioaccessible fractions during an in vitro gastrointestinal digestion. Contents of phenolic compounds, antioxidant capacity, and recovery index of quercetin, myricetin, and cinnamic acid were monitored in different steps of gastrointestinal digestion. Furthermore, the protective effect of in vitro digested HBP towards DNA damage induced by peroxyl radicals was evaluated. The introduced species Brassica rapa L. (Brassicaceae), Lotus pedunculatus Cav. (Fabaceae), and Ulex europaeus L. (Fabaceae) predominated in all the HBPs analyzed, while the native species Buddleja globosa Hope (Scrophulariaceae), Luma apiculata (DC.) Burret (Myrtaceae), Embothrium coccineum J.R. Forst. & G. Forst. (Proteaceae) and Eucryphia cordifolia Cav. (Cunoniaceae) appeared less frequently. The content of polyphenols and antioxidant capacity in HBPEs achieved full bioaccessibility at the end of the intestinal digestion step. However, results obtained by a state-of-the-art technique (i.e. HPLC-DAD) demonstrated relatively low values of bioaccessible quercetin and cinnamic acid after the digestion process. In contrast, myricetin showed a high bioaccessibility in the intestinal digestion steps. The protective effect of in vitro digested HBP towards DNA damage induced by peroxyl radicals showed promising results (up to 91.2% protection). In conclusion, HBPs from the X Region de Los Lagos are rich sources of phenolic antioxidants that protect DNA from strand breakage. Therefore, the potential of HBPEs in preventing gastric and/or intestinal cancer should be further considered.

Monofloral Ulmo honey is a very appreciated product in the international market but more information is needed in order to support their health properties. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents, antioxidant capacity and antibacterial activity of monofloral Ulmo (Eucryphia cordifolia) honey samples were determined. The samples contained between 176 and 208 mg gallic acid eq (GAE)/100 g for total phenolic content (TPC) and 43–90 mg Quercetin eq/100 g for total flavonoid content (TFC). The antioxidant activity ranged between 91 and 152 mM eq Trolox/g and 28–49 mM eq Trolox/g for DPPH and ABTS assays, respectively. All phenolic extracts from honey samples inhibited Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli by plate assays. The chromatographic profile showed that Ulmo honey contained the polyphenolic gallic, caffeic, and coumaric acids, the flavonoids pinocembrin, chrysin, quercetin, luteolin and apigenin, and abscisic acid.

Chilean beekeeping is characterized by a variety of honey types, some unique due to a high participation of native plant species where nectar is collected by bees. For the first time flavonoids, phenolic compounds, and antioxidant capacity in honeys of species Azara integrifolia and Azara petiolaris, commonly known as corcolén honeys, have been determined. The results showed a high content of total phenol (between 48.79 and 153.30 mg GAE/100 g honey), while flavonoid content ranged between 8.80 and 12.33 mg QE/100 g honey. The ORAC-FL assay values varied between 2.15 and 7.74 µmol trolox/g honey, while ORAC-PGR assay values varied between 0.33 and 4.49 µmol trolox/g honey. Two phenolic acids (caffeic, coumaric acids) and three flavonoids (pinocembrin, chrysin, and luteolin) were identified by UHPLC-MS/MS in all honey samples. These results correlate with Azara sp. nectar contribution to the samples.

Chile is one of five global regions exhibiting a mediterranean-type climate regime characterized by evergreen sclerophyll shrublands. These matorral shrublands which dominate the foothills and slopes of the Coastal Mountains and foothills of the Andes in central Chile have received much less study than evergreen shrublands in other mediterranean-type climate regions of the world. Phenological development, growth, and nutrient dynamics of the four widespread matorral shrub species, Lithrea caustica (Anacardiaceae), Colliguaja odorifera (Euphorbiaceae), Kageneckia oblonga (Rosaceae), and Retanilla trinervia (Rhamnaceae), were monitored in central Chile from 1971 to 1975. The four study species all demonstrated growth dynamics and nutrient relations similar to chaparral shrub species of southern California. The species exhibited a sequential development of phenological stages in leaf components following fall precipitation. Colliguaja with relatively shallow root systems showed a sharp peak of new leaf production at the beginning of summer, dropping quickly as summer drought occurred. Another shallow- rooted species while Retanilla initiated leaf production in the late winter, earlier than the other two species, and presented a growth pattern dependent on soil moisture availability. Lithrea and Kageneckia, a more deep-rooted species, initiated leaf production in late spring and continued through the summer. Overall, Chilean shrubs exhibited higher nutrient contents than those of chaparral shrubs in California, suggesting a difference in soil nutrient availability. Reproductive tissues represent a significant portion of the new biomass and nutrient allocation in all four matorral shrubs. Biomass allocation of new tissues (i.e. new leaves, new stems and reproductive tissues) ranged from 8.2% in Retanilla to 16.7% in Colliguaja. Overall, the phenology and nutrient relations of matorral shrubs were similar to those found in chaparral, shrubs indicating that the similar climate regimes can lead to convergence in leaf traits, phenology, and nutrient relationships.

Como imaginan, pidieron a gritos una nueva escuela y se reunieron padres de familia, estudiantes, niños y niñas. Yo miraba las féminas de doce a trece años que cargaban un niño o una niña. Importante e impotente visualización de una cruda realidad, mucho más de lo que se imaginan; esas niñas son madres antes de los quince años, cuando ese cuerpo físico todavía no termina de alinearse a la vida de una mujer. Sin embargo, ellas ya cargan un bebé ¿Es violencia o no? Es violencia, pero, ¿qué podemos hacer para cambiar esa realidad?

The Mayten tree (Maytenus boaria Mol.), a native plant of Chile that grows under environmentally limiting conditions, was historically harvested to extract an edible oil, and may represent an opportunity to expand current vegetable oil production. Seeds were collected from Mayten trees in north-central Chile, and seed oil was extracted by solvent extraction. The seed oil showed a reddish coloration, with quality parameters similar to those of other vegetable oils. The fatty acid composition revealed high levels of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Oleic and linoleic acids, which are relevant to the human diet, were well represented in the extracted Mayten tree seed oil. The oil displayed an antioxidant capacity due to the high contents of antioxidant compounds (polyphenols and carotenoids) and may have potential health benefits for diseases associated with oxidative stress.

Extracts rich in bioactive compounds added to edible films have allowed the development of active packaging that increases the shelf life of food. However, it is necessary to search for solvents that are nontoxic and not harmful to the environment, with natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) being an attractive and easily synthesized alternative. This research aimed to design NADES by lyophilization to be used in the extraction of anthocyanins from the Chilean Luma chequen (Molina) A. Gray berry, and subsequently adding them to the matrix of edible ƙ-carrageenan films. For this purpose, ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) was used and the anthocyanin content was evaluated with the pH differential method. The antioxidant capacity of extracts was determined by DPPH assay and the antibacterial capacity by diffusion agar tests. The results obtained indicate that the designed NADES are efficient at extracting anthocyanins, reaching concentrations between 81.1 and 327.6 mg eq cyanidin 3-glucoside/100 g dw of L. chequen (Molina) A. Gray. The extracts reached inhibition diameters between 5 and 34 mm against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella typhi strains. Once the extracts were incorporated into ƙ-carrageenan films, active edible films with antioxidant and antibacterial capacities were obtained.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Additional therapies using functional foods and dietary supplements have been investigated and used in clinical practice, showing them to be beneficial. Honeybee pollen from Chile has shown a large concentration of phenolic compounds and high antioxidant activity. In this work, we characterized twenty-eight bee pollen extracts from the central zone of Chile according to botanical origin, phenolic profile, quercetin concentration, and antioxidant activity (FRAP and ORAC-FL). Our results show a statistically significant positive correlation between total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity. Selected samples were evaluated on the ability to reverse the steatosis in an in vitro cell model using Hepa1-6 cells. The pollen extracts protected Hepa1-6 cells against oxidative damage triggered by 2,2′-azo-bis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (AAPH)derived free radicals. This effect can be credited to the ability of the phenolic compounds present in the extract to protect the liver cells from chemical-induced injury, which might be correlated to their free radical scavenging potential. Additionally, bee pollen extracts reduce lipid accumulation in a cellular model of steatosis. In summary, our results support the antioxidant, hepatoprotective, and anti-steatosis effect of bee pollen in an in vitro model.

Harvested bee pollen is valuable for its nutritional value and healthy properties. This work relates the botanical origin of sixteen bee pollens from Chile with their phenolic, protein and carotenoid content, and antioxidant/antibacterial activities. Our results showed that the chemical properties of different bee pollens are associated with the plant’ species from which each one was derived from. Some correlations between chemical properties and botanical origin were observed. Bee pollen showed between 20.0- 30.4% protein, 2.8-50.2 mg/kg carotenoids, 22.8-918.4 mg/kg phenolics, and 4.51-91.19 mmol Fe+2/kg pollen. Antibacterial activity was observed against all bacteria assayed even surpassing the activity of traditional antibiotics. Brassica sp. and Galega officinalis are an abundant source of antioxidants and antibacterial compounds. Other species such as those derived from fruit and endemic plants from Chile, although they occur less frequently, are also good source of these compounds. Some correlations between botanical origin and chemical, antioxidant and antibacterial properties were observed. Knowing the influence of plant species over the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of bee pollen, will allow selecting the best location for honeycombs and will allow beekeepers to differentiate and add value to their products.

The present study investigated the antioxidant potential and the ability to inhibit lipid and protein oxidation in bovine meat of four native Chilean species: canelo (Drimys winteri), nalca (Gunnera tinctoria), tiaca (Caldcluvia paniculata), and ulmo (Eucryphia cordifolia). Phenolic acids (gallic, chlorogenic, caffeic, and coumaric) and flavonoids (catechin, epicatechin, and rutin) were identified and quantified by HPLC-MS/MS. Drimys winteri extract exhibited the highest antioxidant capacity evaluated by oxygen radical absorption capacity-red pyrogallol method (ORAC-PGR) and ferric ion reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. All extracts decreased lipid oxidation induced by 2,2’-azo-bis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (AAPH) derived peroxyl radicals by anywhere between 30% and 50% the. In addition, canelo and nalca extracts decreased spontaneous oxidation by around 57% and 37% in relation to the control group, being even more efficient than butylated hydroxyanisole (BHT) a synthetic antioxidant. Protein oxidation in the myofibrillar proteins was evaluated by the formation of protein carbonyls and loss of protein thiols. The canelo, ulmo, and nalca extracts decreased the formation of carbonyls by around 30%. Plant extracts and BHT did not show an antioxidant effect on protein thiol loss. However, tiaca and ulmo extracts exerted a pro-oxidant effect, favoring the oxidation of sulfhydryl groups. The oxidizing system induced structural changes in myofibrillar protein (SDS−PAGE). A protective effect on protein structure from the canelo extract can be observed during the incubation when compared to samples incubated with AAPH.

Honey is a natural product with many attributes that are useful for humans. The consumption of honey is increasing because of its beneficial biological properties, including antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Even though honey is produced worldwide, many variants of this product have not been studied and their biological potential for alternative uses has not been evaluated. Because of its varied endemic native flora, Chile produces several types of honey. It is likely that these apian products have important biological properties inherited from specific floral sources, but it is absolutely necessary to conduct further chemical analyses to identify and characterize these biological attributes. Sadly, the potential antimicrobial and antitumor activities of Chilean honeys remain unproven at the present time. Further studies are needed to identify these attributes. In addition, the impact of human activities on the natural production of honey by bees should be considered. The use of honey as an environmental marker of pollution should also be considered, and care must be taken to diminish the effect of industry and human procedures on natural environments

Quillaja saponaria Mol. (Quillajaceae) is one of the most important melliferous species in Chile, mainly as a source of monofloral honey. Honey made by A. mellifera presents biological activity against pathogens and antioxidant capacity associated with the presence of phenolic compounds deriving from the nectar, as a result of bee honey foraging. The aim of this study was to identify and quantify the phenolic compounds from the floral nectar of Q. saponaria and the honey made in apiaries in the central zone, and compare the composition of the chromatographic profiles of nectar and honey to known phenolic compounds. The results obtained by HPLC-DAD (high-performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detection) showed a similar profile of phenolic compounds, in which gallic acid, myricetin, rutin, quercetin and naringenin were identified. The phenolic compounds detected could be used as a reference for future studies for determining potential chemical markers of this honey, complementing the present identification of honeys by determining their botanical origin. The identification of bioindicators of the floral origins for honey of this species could provide added value to honey commercialization by certifying the botanical origin of their chemical features and biological attributes.

A partir de 1985 comienzan los esfuerzos del Estado de Chile, con el apoyo de especialistas, para generar listas de especies de plantas (1985) y animales (1987) con altos a moderados riesgos de extinción en el corto plazo producto de actividades antrópicas (i.e., especies amenazadas). Las siete categorías de amenazas utilizadas para la fauna coinciden con las empleadas por la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza (UICN) en 1982; para la flora hubo coincidencia en solo cinco de las categorías utilizadas. En el año 1994, la Ley 19300 de Bases del Medio Ambiente estableció seis categorías de estados de conservación. El Reglamento para la Clasificación de Especies Silvestres, promulgado el 2005, definió estas seis categorías haciendo una combinación entre lo propuesto por la UICN en 2001 y 1982. La generación de este sistema híbrido que no era comparable con el utilizado ampliamente en el mundo, restringió severamente la posibilidad de clasificar a las especies con amenaza inferior al nivel de Vulnerable. Complicaciones adicionales se generaron con la inclusión de categorías de conservación en la Ley 19473 de Caza (1996), la Ley 20283 sobre Recuperación del Bosque Nativo y Fomento Forestal (2008), y sus respectivos reglamentos. La Ley 20417 (publicada el 26 de enero 2010) modificó la ley 19300 e incorporó las categorías recomendadas por la UICN. Ahora el Estado requiere adecuar varios cuerpos legales para avanzar en el conocimiento del estado de conservación de la flora y la fauna nacional, y consecuentemente, asegurar la implementación de medidas efectivas de protección de la biodiversidad.Since 1985, the Chilean government with the participation and support of different specialists in plant and animal conservation, started the publication of checklists (i.e. red books) of plant (1985) and animal species (1987) with high to modérate risk of extinction due to human activities (i.e. threatened species). The seven categories of threats used in these publications matched those used by the International Unión for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 1982; nonetheless, for the flora there was matching only in five of the categories used. In 1994, the Law 19300 on the General Bases of the Environment established six categories of conservation status. The regulations for the classification of the wild species in Conservation categories, enacted in 2005, defined these six categories, which resulted from a combination of those proposed by the IUCN in 2001 and 1982. The generation of this hybrid system, which is not fully comparable with that of the IUCN (2001) and widely used in the rest of the world, has severely restricted the possibility of classifying species with a threat level lower than "Vulnerable". Further complications were generated due to the definition of conservation categories that appeared in the Laws 19473 (1996) regulating the hunting activity and 20283 (2008) supporting the native forest recovery and forestry development. The Law 20417 (enacted in January 26, 2010) modified the Law 19300 and incorporated the categories recommended by IUCN. Currently, the State requires adapting several legal bodies to advance in the knowledge of the conservation status of the nation's flora and fauna, and consequently, ensure the implementation of effective efforts to protect our biodiversity.

An ethanol extract prepared from the gametophyte Chilean native moss Sphagnum magellanicum was dried out, weighed and dissolved in distilled water. This extract was then assayed for its antibacterial activity against the G(-) bacteria Azotobacter vinelandii, Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora, Enterobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhi, Vibrio cholerae, and the G(+) bacteria Staphylococcus aureus subsp. aureus, and Streptococcus type b. The growth of the cultures of E. carotovora subsp. carotovora, and V. cholerae was inhibited at a concentration of 581mg/ml of extract, while the cultures of E. coli, S. typhi and Streptococcus type b were inhibited at a concentration of 1.16 mg/mL of extract. The concentration of phenolic compounds was 4.294 mg/mL; the presence of vanillic, chlorogenic, syringic, caffeic, gallic, 3-4 hydrozybenzoic, p-coumaric and salicylic acids was identified using RP- High Pressure Liquid Chromatography.

Porphyry Cu-Mo deposits have influenced surface water quality in high-Andes of north-central Chile since the Miocene. Water anomalies may reduce species abundance and diversity in alpine meadows as acidic and metal-rich waters are highly toxic to plants The study assessed the importance of surface water quality on plant abundance and diversity in high-alpine meadows at the Yerba Loca Natural Santuary (YLNS), central Chile (33°15' S, 70°18' W). Hydrochemical and plant prospecting were carried out on Piedra Carvajal, Chorrillos del Plomo and La Lata meadows the growing seasons of 2006 and 2007. Direct gradient analysis was performed through canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) to look for relationships among water chemistry and plant factors. High variability in water chemistry was found inside and among meadows, particularly for pH, sulphate, electric conductivity, hardness, and total dissolved Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb and Fe. Data on species abundance and water chemical factors suggests that pH and total dissolved Cu are very important factor determining changes in plant abundance and diversity in study meadows. For instance, Festuca purpurascens, Colobanthus quitensis, and Arenaria rivularis are abundant in habitals with Cu-rich waters while Festuca magellanica, Patosia clandestina, Plantago barbata, Werneria pygmea, and Erigeron andícola are abundant in habitals with dilute waters.Los megadepósitos de pórfidos de Cu-Mo han influido sobre la calidad de las aguas superficiales en las zonas altoandinas del centro-norte de Chile desde el Mioceno. Estas alteraciones en la calidad de las aguas podrían afectar negativamente a la vegetación presente en las vegas altoandinas, ya que las aguas acidas y ricas en metales son altamente tóxicas para las plantas. En este estudio se evaluó el efecto de la calidad de las aguas en la abundancia y diversidad florística de las vegas altoandinas del Santuario de la Naturaleza Yerba Loca (SNYL), en Chile central (33° 15' S, 70° 18' O). Se realizaron prospecciones hidroquímicas y botánicas en las vegas de Piedra Carvajal, Chorrillos del Plomo y La Lata, durante las estaciones de crecimiento de 2006 y 2007. Se realizó un análisis directo de gradiente a través del Análisis de Correspondencia Canónica (CCA) para buscar relaciones entre los parámetros químicos del agua y los parámetros botánicos. Se encontró una alta variabilidad química del agua tanto dentro como entre las vegas, particularmente en cuanto a pH, sulfatos, conductividad eléctrica, dureza y contenidos totales disueltos de Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb y Fe. Los datos de abundancias específicas y los parámetros químicos del agua sugieren que el pH y el contenido de Cu total disuelto son factores importantes en determinar los cambios en la abundancia y la diversidad de las especies vegetales en las vegas estudiadas. Por ejemplo, Festuca purpurascens, Colobanthus quitensis y Arenaria rivularis son abundantes en ambientes de aguas con altos contenidos de Cu, mientras que Festuca magellanica, Patosia clandestina, Plantago barbata, Werneria pygmea y Erigeron andícola son abundantes en lugares de aguas con bajos contenidos de Cu.

In this report, 61 honey samples were collected in beehives located between IV and X Administrative Region of Chile. We focussed the analysis in risky chemical elements for human health and in the main chemical elements found previously in Chilean honeys. The analysis of Al, Sr, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn were done by wet acid digestion method by ICP-OES. Lotus pedunculatus and Eucryphia cordifolia honeys showed the highest Al contents related to their geographical origin (Bío-Bío and Los Lagos Regions). The principal component analysis did not show groups of honeys with the some floral origin and a typical chemical element profile.

A comparison of the phenolic content of several Chilean honeys showed great variations in flavonoid concentration among the samples analysed. Higher amounts of phenolics are found in honey from dry climates. The antioxidant effect of extracts, using ORAC analysis, did not correlate with the flavonoid content or with the total phenolic concentration.

Wildfires resulting from thunderstorms are common in some Mediterranean-climate regions, such as southern California, and have played an important role in the ecology and evolution of the flora. Mediterranean-climate regions are major centers for human population and thus anthropogenic impacts on fire regimes may have important consequences on these plant formations. However, changes in fire regimes may have different impacts on Mediterranean type-ecosystems depending on the capability of plants to respond to such perturbations. Therefore, we compare here fire regimes and vegetation responses of two Mediterranean-climate regions which differ in wildfire regimes and history of human occupation, the central zone of Chile (matorral) and the southern area of California in United States (chaparral). In Chile almost all fires result from anthropogenic activities, whereas lightning fires resulting from thunderstorms are frequent in California. In both regions fires are more frequent in summer, due to high accumulation of dry plant biomass for ignition. Humans have markedly increased fires frequency both in the matorral and chaparral, but extent of burned areas has remained unaltered, probably due to better fire suppression actions and a decline in the built-up of dry plant fuel associated to increased landscape fragmentation with less flammable agricultural and urban developments. As expected, post-fire plant regeneration responses differs between the matorral and chaparral due to differences in the importance of wildfires as a natural evolutionary force in the system. Plants from the chaparral show a broader range of post-fire regeneration responses than the matorral, from basal resprouting, to lignotuber resprouting, and to fire-stimulated germination and flowering with fire-specific clues such as heat shock, chemicals from smoke or charred wood. Plants from the matorral have some resprouting capabilities after fire, but these probably evolved from other environmental pressures, such as severe and long summer droughts, herbivory, and volcanism. Although both Mediterranean-type ecosystems have shown to be resilient to anthropogenic fires, increasing fire frequency may be an important factor that needs to be considered as it may result in strong negative effects on plant successional trends and on plant diversityLos incendios forestales originados por tormentas estivales son una característica común en la mayoría de las regiones con clima Mediterráneo, tal como el sur de California, y han jugado un rol importante en la ecología y evolución de su flora. Las regiones con clima Mediterráneo han sido, además, centros importantes para el establecimiento de poblaciones humanas, las que al alterar los regímenes de incendios podrían producir efectos negativos importantes en este tipo de formaciones vegetales. Sin embargo, los efectos antrópicos sobre el régimen de incendios podrían tener impactos distintos en ecosistemas Mediterráneos cuya vegetación ha evolucionado naturalmente con este tipo de perturbación. Así, en este trabajo comparamos los regímenes de incendios y la capacidad de respuesta de la vegetación de dos regiones con clima Mediterráneo que han tenido historias distintas en cuanto a la ocurrencia natural de incendios forestales y de ocupación humana, tales como la zona central de Chile (matorral) y el sur de California (chaparral). En Chile, casi todos los incendios forestales son el resultado de actividades antrópicas, mientras que en California los incendios producidos por el hombre se suman a los producidos por tormentas estivales. En ambas regiones, los incendios son más frecuentes en verano debido a la acumulación de biomasa vegetal seca altamente combustible. El hombre ha incrementado significativamente la frecuencia de incendios tanto en el matorral como en el chaparral en las últimas décadas, pero la extensión de los incendios no se ha incrementado en forma importante, probablemente debido a mejores sistemas de supresión del fuego y a la menor acumulación de biomasa vegetal seca por el aumento de la fragmentación del paisaje con desarrollos urbanos y agrícolas con menor potencial de combustión. Como se esperaba, las respuestas de regeneración de las plantas después de los incendios son distintas en el matorral y en el chaparral. Las plantas del matorral muestran un rango de respuestas regenerativas mayor, las que van desde el rebrote basal, al rebrote desde el lignotuber y a la germinación y floración estimuladas por el fuego, con estímulos fuego-específicos tales como shock térmico, químicos presentes en el humo y en la madera quemada. Las plantas del matorral tienen cierta capacidad de regeneración después del fuego, pero estas probablemente evolucionaron como consecuencia de otras presiones ambientales, tales como las severas y largas sequías de verano, la herbivoría y el volcanismo. Aunque ambos ecosistemas de tipo Mediterráneo han mostrado ser resistentes a los incendios de origen antrópico, el marcado aumento en la frecuencia de estos puede constituir un aspecto muy importante de considerar, ya que puede resultar en efectos negativos importantes tanto en los patrones sucesionales como en la diversidad vegetal

Describimos el patrón de emergencia del muérdago holoparásito Tristerix aphyllus desde su cacto hospedador Echinopsis chilensis en un ecosistema semiárido de Chile. La distribución circular de las inflorescencias del parásito difirió significativamente de una distribución uniforme basada en un proceso aleatorio. Cuantificamos la distribución circular de las semillas defecadas sobre la superficie del cacto por el mímido Mimus thenca, el único ave responsable de la dispersión del muérdago. Nuestros datos no sostuvieron la idea de una deposición de semillas direccional por parte del ave. Para someter a prueba la hipótesis que la distribución circular observada es atribuible a una sobrevivencia diferencial de las semillas debido a variación térmica entre micrositios, infectamos cactos con semillas de T. aphyllus cada 30º y evaluamos la temperatura asociada a cada ángulo. Aun cuando las semillas ubicadas en ángulos con mayor exposición solar presentaron la menor formación de disco haustorial, esta variación en mortalidad no fue suficiente para dar cuenta de la polaridad angular observada. No obstante, las inflorescencias de T. aphyllus que emergieron 17 meses después de la infección experimental, revelaron estadígrafos circulares indistinguibles de aquellos observados en la situación natural. La inspección de la estructura anatómica en dos ángulos opuestos de la cactácea reveló diferencias en la constitución de la epidermis, observándose un espesor en promedio cuatro veces mayor en las muestras orientadas hacia el norte que en las orientadas hacia el sur debido a la formación de corteza altamente lignificada. Sugerimos que la formación de corteza es probablemente el factor más importante en determinar la distribución circular sesgada de T. aphyllusWe describe the pattern of emergence of the holoparasitic mistletoe Tristerix aphyllus from its cactus host Echinopsis chilensis in a semiarid Chilean ecosystem. The observed circular distribution of the parasite inflorescence differed significantly from a uniform distribution based on a random process. We quantified the circular distribution of the seeds defecated on the cactus surface by Mimus thenca, the only bird responsible of seed dispersal. Our data did not support the idea of a directional seed deposition by the bird. To test the hypothesis that the observed circular distribution can be attributable to a differential seed survival due to microsite temperature variation, we infected cacti with seeds of T. aphyllus every 30ºand quantified the temperature associated to each angle. Our results revealed that even though seeds located in angles with higher sun exposure had the lowest haustorial disk formation, this variation in mortality is not sufficient to explain the angular polarity observed in this species. Inspection of inflorescences of T. aphyllus that emerged 17 months after the experimental infection, revealed mean angular values indistinguishable from the natural circular distribution. Assessment of the anatomical structure at two opposing angles of the cactus revealed striking differences in epidermal constitution, such as a four-fold thicker epidermis in north than in south facing samples due to formation of highly lignified bark. We suggest that bark formation is likely the most important factor determining the biased circular distribution of T. aphyllus

Se estudiaron los posibles efectos antifúngico de los extractos metanólicos crudos y fracciones etanólicas de tres plantas nativas de Chile: Ephedra breana, Fabiana imbricata y Nolana sedifolia sobre el desarrollo micelial in vitro del hongo fitopatógeno Botritis cinerea (moho gris), a una concentración de 250 ?g/mL de E. breana y N. sedifolia, y de 400 ?g/mL para F. imbricata. Los resultados ponen en evidencia que las fracciones etanólicas de E. breana y N. sedifolia ejercieron un efecto inhibitorio del crecimiento micelial de B. cinerea, en condiciones in vitro. Este efecto demostró ser fungistático y se mantuvo durante los 14 días evaluados. Los extractos completos de ambas especies no mostraron efectos inhibitorios. Los extractos completos y las fracciones etanólicas fueron analizadas por cromatografía líquida de alta eficiencia y entre los compuestos encontrados fueron: ácido clorogénico, ácido cinámico, ácido p-cumárico, ácido ferúlico, vainillina, ácido vainíllico, rutina, ácido caféico, ácido 3,4-hidroxibenzoico (ácido verátrico), ácido caféico dimetil ester (ácido 3, 4 dimetoxicinámico) y ácido protocatéquico. Las fracciones etanólicas obtenidas pueden considerarse como una promisoria alternativa para el control de este fitopatógeno.

La flora leñosa de Chile presenta un interesante panorama para el estudio de la anatomía sistemática de la madera debido a sus peculiaridades: presencia de especies con distribución latitudinal amplia o estrecha, especies de gran longevidad, géneros de amplia distribución en América y con límite de distribución meridional en Chile, géneros de distribución disyunta, géneros endémicos, familias monogenéricas, géneros monoespecíficos y géneros que requieren de una revisión taxonómica. Los estudios vinculados con el tema de este simposio, en Chile son escasos y no hay científicos cuya área de especialización sea la anatomía sistemática de la madera. Sin embargo, existe la potencialidad de realizar investigación en este campo de la botánica y la necesidad de promover la formación y el intercambio de profesionales relacionados con esta materia. Para lograrlo se requiere de la cooperación científica internacional con universidades e institutos de investigación.

ABSTRACT Neonicotinoids are a relatively new generation of insecticides that have been used for control of pests such as aphids, leafhoppers and whiteflies. This paper presents for the first time a determination of residues of four neonicotinoid insecticides (acetamiprid, thiamethoxam, thiacloprid and imidacloprid) in Chilean honey using QuEChERS extraction and UHPLC-MS/MS analysis. The limits of detection and quantification found for all analytes ranging from 0.34 to 1.43 μg kg-1 and from 0.30 to 4.76 μg kg-1, respectively. The extraction using QuEChERS method provided recoveries over 79% and the precision showed coefficient of variation lower than 20%. These data are in agreement with the international criteria that recommend general recovery limits of 70 - 120%. Of the 16 samples analyzed, in three honey samples neonicotinoids pesticides were detected. These three samples were collected from the same geographical area (Rengo). Fruit and grain production characterize the province of Rengo. The analysis of the botanical origin of these honeys showed the absence of pollen grains of crops and the majority presence of pollen grains of weeds such as Medicago sativa, Galega officinalis and Brassica rapa, which could be associated with crops. Although the residue levels found were low, the results also confirm the actual occurrence of a transfer of neonicotinoid insecticides from exposed honeybees into honey.
