1. PSI Two Semesters Later.

Abstract

Biology 101 was offered for the second time in the Personalized System of Instruction (PSI) format during the spring 1973 semester at North Country Community College. Course policy and procedure for the second semester were identical to fall 1972 except for policy changes outlined in Appendix C of that paper. Sixty students enrolled in the 1973 course, including five who withdrew from the 1972 course. An attempt is made here to identify shifts in student performance during 1973 in an effort to validate policy changes made at the close of 1972 and to identify additional changes that should be initiated. Well over 100 changes in course materials were made at the close of the 1972 semester. The 1973 students generally showed improved pacing over first semester students. The tables in this report contain: the comparison of grade-point averages (GPA) of biology 101 students; the average progress rate of 1972 and 1973 biology 101 students; average daily attendance in biology 101; relative laboratory grade earned compared with nonlaboratory grade; and eventual placement of 1972 biology 101 students. 2. PSI One Semester Later.

Abstract

This report presents results of Personalized System of Instruction (PSI) during the fall 1972 semester in an introductory Biology class at North Country Community College. Fifty-seven students were enrolled in the course at the beginning of the semester. Course content was divided into 20 units of study. A study guide was written for each unit containing introduction, behavioral objectives for the unit, and a suggested procedure for objective mastery. Five student proctors (tutors) assisted students to master course content. Of the initial group of 57 students, 22 were classified as withdrawals. Course evaluation by the students tend to indicate a favorable response to PSI. Progress charts, statistical data, and evaluation results are included. (MJM)

Abstract

In this paper authors have explored the application, methodology and benefits of this concept for reverse and sustainable case-study project: the deconstruction of steel hall for further reuse or simply steel hall reloca-tion. Analyzed case-study was the project of deconstruction and relocation of an old military steel hall. Motivation of this research wasn’t only to analyze the applied approach of the deconstruction but also to explore the application of the BIM concept for this kind of projects. The first important notice is that there is a difference in BIM methodology for construction and deconstruction projects. While for construction projects most of the needed information about the construction design, materials and construction characteristics can be gathered and/or modeled either by the client, project team or directly by the manufacturer, in deconstruction projects those information have to be gathered on the site by verification the project documentation (which is in most cases 2D blue prints) with as-built construction condition, and by direct examination of the construction elements. Using gathered information it is possible to create a 3D model from the 2D verified blue prints. After the 3D model is finished, but before adding the other dimensions it is necessary to make an object oriented work brake-down structure in respect to: 1) global and local construction stability calculations for the deconstruction phases ; 2) technological and organizational constraints and 3) ability to reuse the construction elements. Frequent question when it comes to BIM is: how many dimensions do we need in nD modeling? For construction and deconstruction projects in general it can be answered: number of dimensions n is equal to number of criteria needed to evaluate the project. In this case- study project, time and costs are the criteria and dimensions which were added. The significant general benefit of BIM approach is that numerous of variants can be easily and quickly analyzed simply by optimizing the model regarding to the given criteria for the project evaluation with the visual model simulation as a feedback. The result of this research is a complete and integrated model of the building deconstruction. The difference between the applied deconstruction approach and the model made by authors is that model integrates all the given constraints while the problems which have occurred during the actual deconstruction are caused by the fragmented and mistimed design. Due to these failures planned construction relocation wasn’t realized in complete.

Abstract

A procedure is described for the purification of soluble immune complexes (IC') from biological fluids and for the detection of antibody-bound antigen. A model IC prepared with various amounts of human serum albumin (HSA) and constant amounts or anti-HSA. gave a 44' recovery after gel filtration on Sephacryl .5.100. allinit) chromatography on protein A Sepharose. and concentration of eluates wherefrom before analysis by sodium dodecyl sulphate-poIyacryl- amide gel electrophoresis. it was calculated that 20 ng of antibody-bound EISA should he detectable when polyacrylumide gels are subjected to a direct radioimmunoassay invoking the use of rabbit anti-HSA-1251-protein A, and autoradiography. thus defining the sensitivity of the procedure for detecting IC-bound antigen in a model system. The procedure has direct relevance to the examination of 1C of unknown composition precent in sera of individuals with various diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
