Intertidal salt production sites existed continuously around the Mediterranean since classical antiquity, and their remains are present in large numbers along the Dalmatian (east Adriatic) coast. Most of them are preserved and dated to medieval times. This study aims to develop complementary proxies identifying the salt production layer in submerged ancient saltpans of Lavsa, a remote island on the central Dalmatian coast, to date the saltwork units by optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and use them to infer changes in sea level. The significance of the study is in the application of molecular fossil analyses identifying the hypersaline layer in the sediments from a core drilled in the saltpan's site. The molecular fossil analyses correlate with the results of micro and macrofossil analyses and geochemical findings, all representing the saltwork unit. The depth of the hypersaline layers and the OSL dates provide relative sea level (RSL) lower limiting points of −145 ± 5 cm at 1309 ± 33 CE, probably the time when salt production started in Lavsa, and −115 ± 5 cm at 1364 ± 52 CE when saltwork activities ended. These limiting points extend the known RSL index point in Lavsa Island of −92 ± 8 cm, with an updated average age of 1337 ± 62 CE, correlating with the historical records. Medieval lower sea levels were also observed in the northern and southern parts of the east Adriatic coast as well as in other parts of the Mediterranean, probably driven by climate-related events, generating centennial-scale fluctuations in past sea levels that cannot be predicted by glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) models. Understanding millennial changes in relative sea level (RSL) and coastal responses in stable regions is crucial for deciphering the intricate relationship between natural dynamics and human adaptation. This interdisciplinary study explores the interplay between mid-to-Late Holocene sea-level fluctuations and tectonic along the mid-Tyrrhenian coast. The study area, located between the Fondi and Garigliano coastal plains, held great significance in ancient times. In particular, the strategic role of Formia, a monitoring point for the Tyrrhenian Sea, made this city one of the most important commercial hub during Roman occupation, leading to a significant urbanization of the coastal stretch testified by well-preserved remains nowadays scattered along the submerged or semi-submerged coastal sectors. This study reconstructs the mid-to-Late Holocene morpho-evolution and RSL changes in the study area by creating a geodatabase made of 52 sea-level markers (SLMs) derived from direct geoarchaeological measurements, stratigraphic and palaeoecological interpretations of new borehole data, and previously published stratigraphic data. Specifically, the radiocarbon dating of three peat samples provided new data ranging between 7.62 ± 47 and 1.00 ± 51 ka BP on the sea level history in the area. Based on our dataset, between 9.0 and 8.0 ka BP, the sea level rose from −19 m to −6.5 m at a rate of about 15.6 mm/y, slowing to 0.8 mm/y afterwards, stabilizing at its current position. Results suggest that during the 1st century BC, local sea level was no higher than −0.55 ± 0.29 m. The collected RSL data support the hypothesis of tectonic stability of this sector during the last 2.0 ka, testified by the position of the SLMs in accordance with the glacio-hydro-isostatic adjustment (GIA) models and supported by the determination of average vertical ground movement rates of −0.017 ± 0.23 mm/y. Finally, in terms of coastal changes the overlay between new data from geoarchaeological surveys, reinterpretation of previously-published stratigraphic data, and geomorphological analysis allowed us to deduce a general coastal progradation trend in the historical time for both low-lying and rocky sectors, due to natural and anthropogenic forcing factors. A high-precision and high-resolution vertical velocity for the Chinese mainland is obtained by integrating precise levelling and Global Navigation Satellite System data, using a Helmert joint adjustment method. The results show that the surface vertical rates range between −3.0 and 3.9 mm yr−1 with continuous deformation in most areas, except the obvious subsidence at the rates of −15.0 to −94.2 mm yr−1 induced by groundwater exploitation in the North China Plain. Particularly, the central and southern Tibet, Tien Shan, Alashan, Ordos, eastern Cathaysia and Northeast China uplift at the rates of 0.5–3.9 mm yr−1; the southeastern Tibetan Plateau, Sichuan basin and Yangtze block are dominated by surface subsidence at the rates of −3.3 to −0.5 mm yr−1. Furthermore, the vertical rates vary little between the eastern and western regions of the Chinese mainland despite their pronounced differences in horizontal deformations. The effects of gravity isostasy and non-tectonic factors, including the environmental mass loads, Glacier Isostatic Adjustment (GIA), poroelastic expansion/compression, and mining operations have partially contributed to the vertical deformation of the Chinese mainland. Overall, this velocity reflects the complicated deformation features induced by the multiple geodynamic processes of the Chinese mainland. Glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) describes the response of the solid Earth, oceans, and gravitational field to the spatio‐temporal evolution of ice sheets during a glacial cycle. Present‐day vertical displacements and sea‐level changes vary throughout eastern North America in response to the melting of the Laurentide Ice Sheet following the Last Glacial Maximum. We use the open‐source software SELEN4.0 (a SealEveL EquatioN solver) to investigate the influence of GIA on vertical land motions and sea‐level changes in eastern North America. Further, we evaluate the uncertainties associated with the lithospheric thickness and viscosity structure using an ensemble modeling approach (129,956 total simulations). We identify the best‐fitting rheological profiles by comparing modeled vertical displacements to vertical velocity rates derived from Global Positioning System (GPS). We find a general pattern of subsidence (causing accelerated relative sea‐level rise) in the eastern United States region and uplift (causing relative sea‐level fall) in the eastern Canada region consistent with previous studies for two tested ice sheet models (ICE‐6G(VM5a) and ICE‐7G(VM7)). Overall, we find lower rates of modeled vertical displacement using ICE‐6G(VM5a) compared with ICE‐7G(VM7), which produces lower residuals when compared with the GPS‐derived vertical velocity rates. Our ensemble analysis identifies adjustments to the nominal VM5a and VM7 viscosity models that improve fits to the GPS‐imaged vertical velocity rates throughout eastern North America and on the North American Atlantic Coast. The differences in our best‐fitting models for inland versus coastal regions highlight the importance of exploring lateral viscosity variations for GIA modeling throughout North America and elsewhere. We investigate the Earth's surface movements following the melting of the ice sheet throughout eastern North America. Through computational modeling, we predict rates of vertical land motion and relative sea‐level change throughout eastern North America. We see a general pattern of downward movements (causing relative sea‐level rise) in the eastern United States region and upward movements (causing relative sea‐level fall) in the eastern Canada region. However, modeled rates vary depending on the assumptions about Earth's internal structure. We test different models of Earth structure, based upon variations of the Earth structure profiles paired with two published models of ice sheet history. Our different models vary the lithospheric thickness and radial viscosity structure (viscosity varies by depth only). By comparing the rates of Earth's surface movements generated by these different models to published data of observed vertical land motions, we determine which Earth structure models produce the best fits to the published observations. The dynamics of the ice sheets on glacial timescales are highly controlled by interactions with the solid Earth, i.e., the glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA). Particularly at marine ice sheets, competing feedback mechanisms govern the migration of the ice sheet's grounding line (GL) and hence the ice sheet stability. For this study, we developed a coupling scheme and performed a suite of coupled ice sheet–solid Earth simulations over the last two glacial cycles. To represent ice sheet dynamics we apply the Parallel Ice Sheet Model (PISM), and to represent the solid Earth response we apply the 3D VIscoelastic Lithosphere and MAntle model (VILMA), which, in addition to load deformation and rotation changes, considers the gravitationally consistent redistribution of water (the sea-level equation). We decided on an offline coupling between the two model components. By convergence of trajectories of the Antarctic Ice Sheet deglaciation we determine optimal coupling time step and spatial resolution of the GIA model and compare patterns of inferred relative sea-level change since the Last Glacial Maximum with the results from previous studies. With our coupling setup we evaluate the relevance of feedback mechanisms for the glaciation and deglaciation phases in Antarctica considering different 3D Earth structures resulting in a range of load-response timescales. For rather long timescales, in a glacial climate associated with the far-field sea-level low stand, we find GL advance up to the edge of the continental shelf mainly in West Antarctica, dominated by a self-amplifying GIA feedback, which we call the "forebulge feedback". For the much shorter timescale of deglaciation, dominated by the marine ice sheet instability, our simulations suggest that the stabilizing sea-level feedback can significantly slow down GL retreat in the Ross sector, which is dominated by a very weak Earth structure (i.e., low mantle viscosity and thin lithosphere). This delaying effect prevents a Holocene GL retreat beyond its present-day position, which is discussed in the scientific community and supported by observational evidence at the Siple Coast and by previous model simulations. The applied coupled framework, PISM–VILMA, allows for defining restart states to run multiple sensitivity simulations from. It can be easily implemented in Earth system models (ESMs) and provides the tools to gain a better understanding of ice sheet stability on glacial timescales as well as in a warmer future climate. Despite significant progress in studying subduction earthquake cycles, the vertical deformation is still not well understood. Here, we use a generic viscoelastic earthquake‐cycle model that has recently been validated by horizontal observations to explore the dynamics of vertical earthquake‐cycle deformation. Conditioned on two dimensionless parameters (i.e., the ratio of earthquake recurrence interval T to mantle Maxwell relaxation time tM (T/tM) and the ratio of downdip seismogenic depth D to elastic upper‐plate thickness Hc (D/Hc)), the modeled viscoelastic deformation exhibits significant spatiotemporal deviations from the simple time‐independent elastic solution. Caution thus should be exercised in interpreting fault kinematics with vertical observations if ignoring Earth's viscoelasticity. By systematically exploring these two parameters, we further investigate three metrics that characterize the predicted vertical deformation: the coastal pivot line (CPL), the uplift zone (UZ) landward above the downdip seismogenic extent, and the secondary subsidence zone (SSZ) in the back‐arc region. We find that these metrics can all be time‐dependent, subject to D/Hc and T/tM. The CPL location and the UZ width are mainly controlled by D/Hc and T/tM, respectively. The presence of the SSZ is prevalent during the interseismic phase due to viscous mantle flow driven by ongoing plate convergence. Contemporary vertical deformation in Nankai and Cascadia is largely consistent with the model predictions and features differences mainly related to contrasting D/Hc values in the two margins. These findings suggest that vertical crustal deformation bears fruitful information about subduction‐zone dynamics and is potentially useful for inversions of key subduction‐zone parameters, deserving properly designed monitoring. However, over the past decade, it has increasingly been realized that the vertical deformation is often more diagnostic of megathrust faulting and rheological structure. Additionally, communities studying glacial isostatic adjustment, sea‐level rise, surface and mantle processes and beyond are recently working hard to refine their models by teasing out the earthquake component, which is thought to contaminate their vertical observations. To address these demands, we use computer models validated by the horizontal observations to simulate the vertical movement of the land during the period between great subduction zone earthquakes. We find that the earthquake and subsequent fault locking can cause vertical movement of the surface—subsidence near the coast, uplift landward and subsidence again in the far field. These three features can vary in deformation rates and location/area depending on how deep the fault is locked, how weak the mantle is, and how much time has elapsed since the earthquake. Therefore, previous vertical observations and newly deployed instruments designed to detect key signals are essential for understanding earthquakes, tsunamis and the dynamics of the subduction system. The response of the Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS) to climate change is the largest uncertainty in projecting future sea level. The impact of three-dimensional (3D) Earth structure on the AIS and future global sea levels is assessed here by coupling a global glacial isostatic adjustment model incorporating 3D Earth structure to a dynamic ice-sheet model. We show that including 3D viscous effects produces rapid uplift in marine sectors and reduces projected ice loss for low greenhouse gas emission scenarios, lowering Antarctica's contribution to global sea level in the coming centuries by up to ~40%. Under high-emission scenarios, ice retreat outpaces uplift, and sea-level rise is amplified by water expulsion from Antarctic marine areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During the glacial cycles of the past 800 000 years, Eurasia and North America were periodically covered by large ice sheets, causing up to 100 m of sea-level change. While Late Pleistocene glacial cycles typically lasted 80 000–120 000 years, the termination phases were completed in only 10 000 years. During these glacial terminations, the North American and Eurasian ice sheets retreated, which created large proglacial lakes in front of the ice-sheet margin. Proglacial lakes accelerate deglaciation as they facilitate the formation of ice shelves at the southern margins of the North American and Eurasian ice sheets. These ice shelves are characterized by basal melting, low surface elevations, and negligible friction at the base. Here, we use an ice-sheet model to quantify the (combined) effects of proglacial lakes on Late Pleistocene glacial terminations by examining their interplay with glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) and basal sliding. We find that proglacial lakes accelerate the deglaciation of ice sheets mainly because there is an absence of basal friction underneath ice shelves. If friction underneath grounded ice is applied to floating ice, full deglaciation is postponed by a few millennia, resulting in more ice remaining during interglacial periods and no extensive ice shelves forming. Additionally, the large uncertainty in melt rates underneath lacustrine ice shelves translates to an uncertainty in the timing of the termination of up to a millennium. Proglacial lakes are created by depressions in the landscape that remain after an ice sheet has retreated. The depth, size, and timing of proglacial lakes depend on the rate of bedrock rebound. We find that if bedrock rebounds within a few centuries (rather than a few millennia), the mass loss rate of the ice sheet is substantially reduced. This is because fast bedrock rebound prevents the formation of extensive proglacial lakes. Additionally, a decrease in ice thickness is partly compensated for by faster bedrock rebound, resulting in a higher surface elevation; lower temperatures; and a higher surface mass balance, which delays deglaciation. We find that a very long bedrock relaxation time does not substantially affect terminations, but it may lead to a delayed onset of the next glacial period. Deltas and coastal plains worldwide developed under the influence of relative sea level rise (RSLR) during the Holocene. In the Netherlands, Holocene RSLR results from both regional sea-level rise and regional subsidence patterns, mainly caused by glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA: Scandinavian forebulge collapse) and longer-term North Sea Basin tectono-sedimentary subsidence. Past coastal and inland water levels are preserved in geological indicators marking the gradual drowning of an area, for example basal peats. Such geological water-level indicators have been used in the Netherlands for varying types of research. However, uniform overviews of these data exist only for smaller local subsets and not for the entire Netherlands. In this paper we present a data set of 712 Holocene water-level indicators from the Dutch coastal plain that are relevant for studying RSLR and regional subsidence, compiled in HOLSEA workbook format. This format was expanded to allow for registering basal-peat type geological indicators, documenting Dutch-setting specific parameters and accompanying uncertainties, to assess indicative meaning, and to appropriately correct the raw vertical positions of the indicators. Overall, our new, internally consistent, expanded documentation provided for the water-level indicators encourages users to choose the information relevant for their research and report RSLR uncertainties transparently. From the indicators, 59 % was collected in 1950–2000, mainly in academic studies and survey mapping campaigns; 37 % was collected in 2000–2020 in academic studies and archaeological surveying projects, 4 % was newly collected (this study), the latter mainly in previously under sampled central and northern Netherlands regions. Prominent regional differences exist in the vertical position and abundance of the indicators. Older indicators in our data set are mostly located in the deeper seaward area of the Netherlands. These indicators correspond well with previous transgression reconstructions, that are partly based on the same data. The younger, landwards set of indicators in the Rhine-Meuse central and Flevoland regions corresponds with the transgression phase reaching further inland, from 8000 cal. BP onwards. Northern indicators of Middle Holocene age (8–5 ka cal. BP), in general lie 2–3 meters lower compared to those in the south. The melting of ice sheets and global glaciers results in sea-level rise, a pole-to-equator mass transport increasing Earth's oblateness and resulting in an increase in the length of day (LOD). Here, we use observations and reconstructions of mass variations at the Earth's surface since 1900 to show that the climate-induced LOD trend hovered between 0.3 and 1.0 ms/cy in the 20th century, but has accelerated to 1.33 ± 0.03 ms/cy since 2000. We further show that surface mass transport fully explains the accelerating trend in the Earth oblateness observed in the past three decades. We derive an independent measure of the decreasing LOD trend induced by Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (GIA) of -0.80 ± 0.10 ms/cy, which provides a constraint for the mantle viscosity. The sum of this GIA rate and lunar tidal friction fully explains the secular LOD trend that is inferred from the eclipse record in the past three millennia prior to the onset of contemporary climate change. Projections of future climate warming under high emission scenarios suggest that the climate-induced LOD rate may reach 2.62 ± 0.79 ms/cy by 2100, overtaking lunar tidal friction as the single most important contributor to the long-term LOD variations. Global mean sea level during the mid-Pliocene epoch (∼3 Ma), when CO2 and temperatures were above present levels, was notably higher than today due to reduced global ice sheet coverage. Nevertheless, the extent to which ice sheets responded to Pliocene warmth remains in question owing to high levels of uncertainty in proxy-based sea level reconstructions as well as solid Earth dynamic models that have been used to evaluate a limited number of data constraints. Here, we present a global dataset of 10 wave-cut scarps that formed by successive Pliocene sea level oscillations and which are observed today at elevations ranging from ∼6 to 109 m above sea level. The present-day elevations of these features have been identified using a combination of high-resolution digital elevation models and field mapping. Using the MATLAB interface TerraceM, we extrapolate the cliff and platform surfaces to determine the elevation of the scarp toe, which in most settings is buried under meters of talus. We correct the scarp-toe elevations for glacial isostatic adjustment and find that this process alone cannot explain observed differences in Pliocene paleo-shoreline elevations around the globe. We next determine the signal associated with mantle dynamic topography by back-advecting the present-day three-dimensional buoyancy structure of the mantle and calculating the difference in radial surface stresses over the last 3 Myr using the convection code ASPECT. We include a wide range of present-day mantle structures (buoyancy and viscosity) constrained by seismic tomography models, geodynamic observations, and rock mechanics laboratory experiments. Finally, we identify preferred dynamic topography change predictions based on their agreement with scarp elevations and use our most confident result to estimate a Pliocene global mean sea level based on one scarp from De Hoop, South Africa. This inference (11.6 ± 5.2 m) is a downward revision and may imply that ice sheets were relatively resistant to warm Pliocene climate conditions. We analyse 498 faults identified in satellite imagery and interpret the height and width of associated footwall ranges with respect to co‐seismic elastic rebound from tectonic and erosional unloading. The dynamics of footwall uplift link uplands to catchment patterns and interrelated hanging wall sedimentary fans. Height–length relations of some catchments and associated alluvial fans scale linearly whereas others, such as fault‐slope catchments and related down‐fault fans (building out from faults) show a significant scatter without an obvious trend. Perched basins abandoned in the footwalls of younger faults offer catchment‐fan height–length relations like watergap and dipslope‐related fans and, besides, hint at reduction of dip angle due to rollback of larger faults before abandonment. Analysis of the width‐to‐height ratio (W/h) of footwall ranges offer a robust linear statistical trend, h = 0.06 W and is identical between datasets. This trend is valid for both arid and tropical rifts, the latter offering smaller rebounds. Contributions of elastic rebound on fault throw in our data are simplistically considered through comparison to global trends on fault length versus throw. This allows consideration around maximum throw (Tmax) linked to the maximum height of footwall ranges (h) and to their width (W) above the reference level. Basic calculations indicate that co‐seismic rebound contributes from <1% to 17% of extensional fault throw. Width‐to‐height ratios for large faults (L > c. 50 km) show less spread than smaller faults. Such large faults expectedly dissect the brittle crust, indicating that these large faults which root in the ductile–brittle transition approach a balanced, steady‐state kinematic pattern. We speculate that significant crustal thinning associated with these large faults triggers the onset of isostatic adjustments that drive fault rotation, instigating fault abandonment and disconnected perched basins. Normal mode analysis is a Laplace‐transform method for calculating the surface‐loading response of laterally homogeneous spherical Earth models with linear viscoelasticity which delivers modal decay times and amplitudes. It can locally fail owing to numerical singularities arising from the viscoelastic parameters, leading to an incomplete accounting of the surface‐loading response. Collocation methods were developed to circumvent this issue. The mixed collocation method includes least‐squares fitting to the Laplace‐transformed Earth response to determine amplitudes assuming the normal mode decay times are known, while the pure collocation method assumes a series of logarithmically regularly spaced inverse decay times for which amplitudes are determined numerically. Both collocation methods may determine amplitudes that are physically unrealistic and all three methods produce crustal motion predictions that differ significantly. The hybrid normal mode‐collocation method presented here applies the normal mode analysis, and then applies the pure collocation to the resulting residuals. This retains the modal structure, while providing an improved fit. Our implementation avoids numerical singularities that may arise from Rayleigh‐Taylor instabilities occurring at large times and can be automated. Vertical crustal motions predicted by the hybrid method for North America with the ICE‐6G_C loading model and the VM5a viscosity structure have a root mean square (RMS) of 4.49 mm/yr and RMS differences with the normal mode, pure, and mixed collocation method of 0.06, 0.23, and 0.25 mm/yr, respectively. Maximum differences reach 0.20, 0.87, and 0.63 mm/yr. The differences increase for a viscosity profile with a greater viscosity increase with depth that exhibits stronger singularity issues. GIA induces crustal motion and gravitational change and is an important element for understanding regional sea‐level change. The goal of this study was to develop a computer modeling method that can be used to accurately calculate the Earth's GIA response, subject to some simplifying assumptions about the nature of Earth structure and its flow properties, while also being more robust than previous methods. To do this, we created a new method (Hybrid Normal Mode‐Collocation) from two previously published methods to minimize the documented issues of these prior methods. The hybrid method is shown to be robust, produce a more accurate predicted Earth model response, and avoid most of the problems of the previous methods. The vast majority of ice-sheet modelling studies rely on simplified representations of the glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA), which, among other limitations, do not account for lateral variations in the lithospheric thickness and upper-mantle viscosity. In studies of the last glacial cycle using 3D GIA models, this has however been shown to have major impacts on the dynamics of marine-based sectors of Antarctica, which are likely to be the greatest contributors to sea-level rise in the coming centuries. This gap in comprehensiveness is explained by the fact that 3D GIA models are computationally expensive, rarely open-source and require a complex coupling scheme. To close this gap between "best" and "tractable" GIA models, we propose FastIsostasy here, a regional GIA model capturing lateral variations in the lithospheric thickness and mantle viscosity. By means of fast Fourier transforms and a hybrid collocation scheme to solve its underlying partial differential equation, FastIsostasy can simulate 100 000 years of high-resolution bedrock displacement in only minutes of single-CPU computation, including the changes in sea-surface height due to mass redistribution. Despite its 2D grid, FastIsostasy parameterises the depth-dependent viscosity and therefore represents the depth dimension to a certain extent. FastIsostasy is benchmarked here against analytical, as well as 1D and 3D numerical solutions, and shows good agreement with them. For a simulation of the last glacial cycle, its mean and maximal error over time and space respectively yield less than 5 % and 16 % compared to a 3D GIA model over the regional solution domain. FastIsostasy is open-source, is documented with many examples and provides a straightforward interface for coupling to an ice-sheet model. The model is benchmarked here based on its implementation in Julia, while a Fortran version is also provided to allow for compatibility with most existing ice-sheet models. Relative sea level (RSL) predictions based on glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) simulations and palaeotidal predictions generated by hydrodynamic models using GIA‐generated palaeotopographies are available in the published literature, and datasets are available via data repositories. However, these data are often difficult to extract for specific locations or timeslices, requiring users to request datasets from corresponding authors. To overcome the intractability of these data and to enable users to interrogate datasets themselves without requiring offline requests, we have developed PALTIDE, an online visualization tool with intuitive user interface accessible at https://shiny.bangor.ac.uk/paleotidal/. The model domain for this interactive visualization tool is the northwest European continental shelf, covering the period from the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) to the present day, and is based on previous GIA simulations by Bradley and colleagues and hydrodynamic simulations using Regional Ocean Modelling System (ROMS) published by Ward and colleagues. The tool is developed in R and utilizes a number of packages including shiny and bslib for the frontend, and arrow, raster and the tidyverse for backend data processing. The tool enables visualizations and data downloads for RSL, tidal amplitude and tide‐dependent parameters for any location within the model domain over 1000‐year timesteps from the LGM to the present. Late Holocene relative sea-level (RSL) data are important to understand the drivers of RSL change, but there is a lack of precise RSL records from the Sunda Shelf. Here, we produced a Late Holocene RSL reconstruction from coral microatolls in Singapore, demonstrating for the first time the utility of Diploastrea heliopora microatolls as sea-level indicators. We produced 12 sea-level index points and three marine limiting data with a precision of < ± 0.2 m (2σ) and < ± 26 years uncertainties (95% highest density region). The data show a RSL fall of 0.31 ± 0.18 m between 2.8 and 0.6 thousand years before present (kyr BP), at rates between − 0.1 ± 0.3 and − 0.2 ± 0.7 mm/year. Surface profiles of the fossil coral microatolls suggest fluctuations in the rate of RSL fall: (1) stable between 2.8 and 2.5 kyr BP; (2) rising at ~ 1.8 kyr BP; and (3) stable from 0.8 to 0.6 kyr BP. The microatoll record shows general agreement with published, high-quality RSL data within the Sunda Shelf. Comparison to a suite of glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) models indicate preference for lower viscosities in the mantle. However, more high quality and precise Late Holocene RSL data are needed to further evaluate the drivers of RSL change in the region and better constrain GIA model parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Constitutive laws are a necessary ingredient in calculations of glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) or other surface loading problems (e.g. loading by ocean tides). An idealized constitutive law governed by the Maxwell viscoelastic model is widely used but increasing attention is being directed towards more intricate constitutive laws that, in particular, include transient rheology. In this context, transient rheology collectively refers to dissipative mechanisms activated in addition to creep modelled by the Maxwell viscoelastic model. Consideration of such viscoelastic models in GIA is in its infancy and to encourage their wider use, we present constitutive laws for several experimentally derived transient rheologies and outline a flexible method in which to incorporate them into geophysical problems, such as the viscoelastic deformation of the Earth induced by surface loading. To further motivate this need, we demonstrate, via the Love number collocation method, how predictions of crustal displacement depart significantly between Earth models that adopt only Maxwell viscoelasticity and those with transient rheology. Throughout this paper, we highlight the differences in terminology and emphases between the rock mechanics, seismology and GIA communities, which have perhaps contributed towards the relative scarcity in integrating this broader and more realistic class of constitutive laws within GIA. We focus on transient rheology since the associated deformation has been demonstrated to operate on timescales that range from hours to decades. With ice mass loss enhanced at similar timescales as a consequence of anthropogenically caused climate change, the ability to model GIA with more accurate constitutive laws is an important tool to investigate such problems. Determining recent Antarctic ice volume changes from satellite altimeter measurements of ice surface height requires a correction for contemporaneous vertical crustal deformation. This correction must consider two main sources of crustal deformation: (1) ongoing glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA), that is, the deformational, gravitational, and rotational response to Late Pleistocene and Holocene ice and ocean mass changes and (2) modern ice mass change. In this study, we seek to quantify the uncertainties associated with each of these corrections. Corrections of ice surface height changes for correction 1 have generally involved the adoption of global models of GIA defined by some preferred combination of ice history and mantle viscoelastic structure. We have computed the GIA correction generated from a coupled ice sheet–sea level model and a realistic Earth model incorporating three-dimensional viscoelastic structure. Integrating the difference between this correction and those from recent GIA analyses widely adopted in the literature yields an uncertainty in total present-day ice volume change equivalent to approximately 10 % of Antarctic ice mass loss inferred for the period 2010–2020. This reinforces earlier work indicating that ice histories characterized by relatively high excess ice volume at the Last Glacial Maximum may be introducing a significant error in estimates of modern melt rates. Regarding correction 2, a spatially invariant scaling has commonly been used to convert GIA-corrected ice surface height changes obtained from satellite altimetry to ice volume estimates. We adopt modeling results based on a projection of Antarctic ice mass change over the period 2015–2055 to demonstrate a spatial variability in the scaling of up to 10 % across the ice sheet. Furthermore, using these calculations, we find a systematic error of ∼ 3 % in the projected net ice volume change, with most of the difference arising in areas of West Antarctica above mantle zones of low viscosity. Monitoring the Greenland mass balance (GMB) is crucial in the context of global sea level rise. Currently, three main methods are used to measure GMB, with the primary source of uncertainty arising from the glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) contribution. Here, we propose a novel approach based on a simple methodology that uses the entire Greenland GNSS network (GNET) as an instrument to monitor the present‐day mass changes. Our method is validated against GRACE‐derived GMB, and we find a very good agreement. This leads to an independent methodology for estimating present‐day mass changes from GNSS, bridging the gap between GRACE and GRACE‐FO in GMB estimates. Through a combined analysis of GMB from GRACE and GNET, we identify a consistency relation between the gravity and uplift signature of GIA, providing a new robust constraint for GIA models. Global coupled climate models are in continuous need for evaluation against independent observations to reveal systematic model deficits and uncertainties. Changes in terrestrial water storage (TWS) as measured by satellite gravimetry missions GRACE and GRACE‐FO provide valuable information on wetting and drying trends over the continents. Challenges arising from a comparison of observed and modelled water storage trends are related to gravity observations including non‐water related variations such as, for example, glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA). Therefore, correcting secular changes in the Earth's gravity field caused by ongoing GIA is important for the monitoring of long‐term changes in terrestrial water from GRACE in particular in former ice‐covered regions. By utilizing a new ensemble of 56 individual realizations of GIA signals based on perturbations of mantle viscosities and ice history, we find that many of those alternative GIA corrections change the direction of GRACE‐derived water storage trends, for example, from gaining mass into drying conditions, in particular in Eastern Canada. The change in the sign of the TWS trends subsequently impacts the conclusions drawn from using GRACE as observational basis for the evaluation of climate models as it influences the dis‐/agreement between observed and modelled wetting/drying trends. A modified GIA correction, a combined GRACE/GRACE‐FO data record extending over two decades, and a new generation of climate model experiments leads to substantially larger continental areas where wetting/drying trends currently observed by satellite missions coincide with long‐term predictions obtained from climate model experiments. These data give important insight into climate‐driven wetting and drying on the continents and can thus be applied to evaluate the output of climate models designed to simulate current and future changes in the Earth system. To isolate climate‐induced water storage trends, the GIA effect has to subtracted from the GRACE/‐FO time series. With 56 different GIA models, we show that the choice of this correction affects the direction of the GRACE‐derived water storage trend from wetting to drying (or vice versa). Therefore, it is crucial for the dis‐/agreement of the observed trend direction and climate models, particularly in the previously ice‐covered regions of Canada. With the revised data processing scheme, the satellite observations document long‐term changes in terrestrial water storage in various regions that are in line with climate model projections. The possibility of a transient rheological response to ice age loading, first discussed in the literature of the 1980s, has received renewed attention. Transient behaviour across centennial to millennial timescales has been invoked to reconcile apparently contradictory inferences of steady-state (Maxwell) viscosity based on two distinct data sets from Greenland: Holocene sea-level curves and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) derived modern crustal uplift data. To revisit this issue, we first compute depth-dependent Fréchet kernels using 1-D Maxwell viscoelastic Earth models and demonstrate that the mantle resolving power of the two Greenland data sets is highly distinct, reflecting the differing spatial scale of the associated surface loading: the sea-level records are sensitive to viscosity structure across the entire upper mantle while uplift rates associated with post-1000 CE fluctuations of the Greenland Ice Sheet have a dominant sensitivity to shallow asthenosphere viscosity. Guided by these results, we present forward models which demonstrate that a moderate low viscosity zone beneath the lithosphere in Maxwell Earth models provides a simple route to simultaneously reconciling both data sets by significantly increasing predictions of present-day uplift rates in Greenland whilst having negligible impact on predictions of Holocene relative sea-level curves from the region. Our analysis does not rule out the possibility of transient deformation, but it suggests that it is not required to simultaneously explain these two data sets. Predicting coastal change depends upon our knowledge of postglacial relative sea-level variability, partly controlled by glacio-isostatic responses to ice-sheet melting. Here, we reconstruct the postglacial relative sea-level changes along the Caribbean and Pacific coasts of northwestern South America by numerically solving the sea-level equation with two scenarios of mantle viscosity: global standard average and high viscosity. Our results with the standard model (applicable to the Pacific coast) agree with earlier studies by indicating a mid-Northgrippian high stand of ~2 m. The high-viscosity simulation (relevant to the Caribbean coast) shows that the transition from far- to intermediate-field influence of the Laurentide Ice Sheet occurs between Manzanillo del Mar and the Gulf of Morrosquillo. South of this location, the Colombian Caribbean coast has exhibited a still stand with a nearly constant Holocene relative sea level. By analyzing our simulations considering sea-level indicators, we argue that tectonics is more prominent than previously assumed, especially along the Caribbean coast. Recent geologic and modeled evidence suggests that the grounding line of the Siple Coast of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) retreated hundreds of kilometers beyond its present position in the middle to late Holocene and readvanced within the past 1.7 ka. This grounding line reversal has been attributed to both changing rates of isostatic rebound and regional climate change. Here, we test these two hypotheses using a proxy-informed ensemble of ice sheet model simulations with varying ocean thermal forcing, global glacioisostatic adjustment (GIA) model simulations, and coupled ice sheet-GIA simulations that consider the interactions between these processes. Our results indicate that a warm to cold ocean cavity regime shift is the most likely cause of this grounding line reversal, but that GIA influences the rate of ice sheet response to oceanic changes. This implies that the grounding line here is sensitive to future changes in sub-ice shelf ocean circulation. Using ice sheet model and glacio-isostatic adjustment model simulations and paleoclimate proxies, this work demonstrates that the most likely cause of past West Antarctic grounding-line reversal was a regime shift from a warm to cold ocean cavity. The results of geomorphological mapping and survey of Lateglacial and Holocene displaced shorelines in the Clyde estuary and around Loch Lomond, western central Scotland are described. On the basis of morphology, sedimentology, altitude and radiocarbon dating, four discrete shorelines are identified and are correlated with previously identified Scottish displaced shorelines. The shoreline formerly referred to as the Main Postglacial Shoreline is renamed the Menteith Shoreline. This body of data, combined with data on displaced shorelines for Scotland as a whole has been analysed using Gaussian quadratic trend surface analysis in order to determine the centre of glacio‐isostatic displacement for each shoreline. These Gaussian models of palaeo‐relative sea‐level suggest that the zone of greatest displacement lay NNW of Loch Lomond in the Lateglacial then moved SSE to the region of Loch Lomond during the Holocene and the Clyde in the Late Holocene. The factors responsible for the movement of the zone of greatest uplift are discussed, including temporal variations in the ice‐sheet thickness, variations in water load in the adjacent sea‐lochs and neotectonic processes. Comparison is made with glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) models. An asthenospheric window underneath much of the South American continent increases the heat flow in the southern Patagonian Andes where glacial–interglacial cycles drive the building and melting of the Patagonian Icefields since the latest Miocene. The Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) was reached ∼26000 yr BP (years before present). Significant deglaciation onsets between 21 000 and 17 000 yr BP were subject to an acceleration since the Little Ice Age (LIA), which was ∼400 yr BP. Fast uplift rates of up to 41±3 mm yr -1 are measured by global navigation satellite system (GNSS) around the Southern Patagonian Icefield and are currently ascribed to post-LIA lithospheric rebound, but the possible longer-term post-LGM rebound is poorly constrained. These uplift rates, in addition, are 1 order of magnitude higher than those measured on other glaciated orogens (e.g. the European Alps), which raises questions about the role of the asthenospheric window in affecting the vertical surface displacement rates. Here, we perform geodynamic thermo-mechanical numerical modelling to estimate the surface uplift rates induced by post-LIA and post-LGM deglaciation, accounting for temperature-dependent rheologies and different thermal regimes in the asthenosphere. Our modelled maximum post-glacial rebound matches the observed uplift rate budget only when both post-LIA and post-LGM deglaciation are accounted for and only if a standard continental asthenospheric mantle potential temperature is increased by 150–200 °C. The asthenospheric window thus plays a key role in controlling the magnitude of presently observed uplift rates in the southern Patagonian Andes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding drivers of marine-terminating ice sheet behavior is important for constraining ice contributions to global sea level rise. In part, the stability of marine-terminating ice is influenced by solid Earth conditions at the grounded-ice margin. While the Cordilleran Ice Sheet (CIS) contributed significantly to global mean sea level during its final post-Last-Glacial-Maximum (LGM) collapse, the drivers and patterns of retreat are not well constrained. Coastal outcrops in the deglaciated Puget Lowland of Washington State – largely below sea level during glacial maxima, then uplifted above sea level via glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) – record the late Pleistocene history of the CIS. The preservation of LGM glacial and post-LGM deglacial sediments provides a unique opportunity to assess the variability in marine ice sheet behavior of the southernmost CIS. Based on paired stratigraphic and geochronological work, with a newly developed marine reservoir correction for this region, we identify that the late-stage CIS experienced stepwise retreat into a marine environment between 15 000 and 14 000 years before present, consistent with timing of marine incursion into the region reported in earlier works. Standstill of marine-terminating ice for at least 500 years, paired with rapid vertical landscape evolution, was followed by continued retreat of ice in a subaerial environment. These results suggest rapid rates of solid Earth uplift and topographic support (e.g., grounding zone wedges) stabilized the ice margin, supporting final subaerial ice retreat. This work leads to a better understanding of shallow-marine and coastal-ice-sheet retreat and is relevant to sectors of the contemporary Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets and marine-terminating outlet glaciers. Relic coastal landforms (fossil corals, cemented intertidal deposits, or erosive features carved onto rock coasts) serve as sea‐level index points (SLIPs), that are widely used to reconstruct past sea‐level changes. Traditional SLIP‐based sea‐level reconstructions face challenges in capturing continuous sea‐level variability and dating erosional SLIPs, such as tidal notches. Here, we propose a novel approach to such challenges. We use a numerical model of cliff erosion embedded within a Monte Carlo simulation to investigate the most likely sea‐level scenarios responsible for shaping one of the best‐preserved tidal notches of Last Interglacial age in Sardinia, Italy. Results align with Glacial Isostatic Adjustment model predictions, indicating that synchronized or out‐of‐sync ice‐volume shifts in Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets can reproduce the notch morphology, with sea level confidently peaking at 6 m and only under a higher than present erosion regime. This new approach yields insight into sea‐level trends during the Last Interglacial. Plain Language Summary: Scientists typically investigate the position of sea level in geological time using the elevation, age, and characteristics of fossil marine organisms living in shallow water (e.g., coral reefs), beach deposits, or erosional features that were formed near the sea level. However, these indicators offer only fragmented, if not only point‐like information in time and not a continuous sea‐level record. To overcome this issue, we use a numerical model that reconstructs the shape of tidal notches (i.e., indentations created close to sea level in carbonate cliffs). We compare model‐generated notch shapes with the real shape of the tidal notch, and we produce a set of continuous sea‐level histories that are more likely to have produced one of the best‐preserved fossil tidal notches in the Orosei Gulf, Sardinia, Italy, carved during the Last Interglacial highstand, 125.000 years ago. Our findings suggest that whether the ice sheets in Antarctica and Greenland melted at the same time or separately, both scenarios could reproduce the actual shape of the tidal notch we observe at present. Our findings indicate that the erosion rate during that period was higher than present and the sea level is very likely to have reached up to 6 m. The relativistic redshift between two earth-bound clocks can be interpreted in terms of gravity potential variation between the clock locations. A clock with a fractional frequency uncertainty of 10 - 18 is sensitive to a gravity potential variation of 0.1 m2/s2 or a height difference of 1 cm. Case studies for four regions affected by different mass change processes - Himalaya, Amazon, Greenland, and Fennoscandia - have been carried out. As the clocks rest on the deformable Earth's surface, clock observations do not only include potential variations due to mass changes but also associated variations due to the vertical deformation of the land. For the simulations, vertical displacements were derived from real GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) measurements, and mass variations were computed from GRACE (Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment) solutions. In the Himalayan region, seasonal variations with a maximum range of - 0.2 0.2 m2/s2 were obtained. There, early and long-lasting precipitation patterns in North-East India and the gradual spreading towards the West can be observed by a dedicated clock network. For the Amazon region, seasonal variations with a maximum range of - 0.5 0.5 m2/s2 observed by clocks also reveals the Amazon's seasonal properties of annual rainfall variability at the North and South of the equator. The rainy season in the North of the equator is during the summer season from June to August, but from November to April in the South of the equator. The long-term trend of the ice mass loss in Greenland between 2004 and 2015 causes signals of potential variations of 1 m2/s2 that again can clearly be observed by clock measurements. Especially, the higher rates of mass variations in the west and south parts of Greenland can well be observed. The land uplift pattern of Fennoscandia due to the GIA (Glacial Isostatic Adjustment) can also be detected using optical clocks, however, the vertical deformations dominate the signal and not the mass changes. These examples illustrate that terrestrial clock networks can be used in the future as a modern tool for detecting various time-variable gravity signals for understanding the regional/local patterns of the variations and for providing complementary information to other geodetic techniques. Beyond the impact of glacial isostatic adjustment, landscape evolution is typically neglected at large scale when considering the basal boundary condition for ice sheet and climate modelling over past glacial cycles. Erosion and changing sediment loads impact bed elevation, land/sea mask, and basal drag. To date, how the above affects past ice sheet evolution is unclear. Constraining the role that Pliocene regolith may have played in Pleistocene glacial cycle variability requires bounds on the amount of regolith preceding those glacial cycles. However, quantitative bounds on regolith thickness at the spatial scale of the glaciated regions of North America are currently absent in the literature. To address the above, we present an updated sediment production and transport model with dynamically calculated soft sediment mask, isostatic adjustment to dynamical sediment load and bedrock erosion, and a new subglacial hydrology model coupled to the Glacial Systems Model. The coupled model is capable of multi-million year integrations driven only by greenhouse gas concentration and insolation. The model passes a set of verification tests and conserves mass. We assess parametric sensitivity of sediment transport rates. We compare the final sediment solutions in an ensemble of whole-Pleistocene simulations for a range of initial (Pliocene) regolith thicknesses against multiple estimates for present day drift thickness distribution, Quaternary sediment volume in the Atlantic Ocean, and erosion depth estimates. The new photon-counting laser altimetry satellite ICESat-2 was successfully launched on September 15, 2018 with an unprecedented ice surface elevation measurement accuracy of 2–4 cm. It is meaningful for accurately estimating volumetric changes in the Antarctic Ice Sheet. Cross-validation of different types of data, especially comparison with in-situ data, is important for the ice sheet mass balance results of a new satellite. This paper proposes an elevation-difference method of grid elevation change rate model, based on ICESat-2 ATL11 elevation time series data, to distinguish the linear change trend of ice sheet surface elevation from the elevation change resulting from periodic precipitation. In order to compare the estimated elevation-change rate with the flux computed from in-situ snow stake velocity measurements and GRACE-FO gravity survey data, we made corrections for firn air content, elastic, and glacier isostatic adjustment. Based on the ATL11 data from 2019 to 2023, our results show that the ice sheet change in Basin 11 along the CHINARE traverse is from ~0.019 m yr−1 to ~0.121 m yr−1, and the mass balance in the upstream of the traverse in Basin 11 is ~1.9±0.2 Gt yr−1. It is comparable to ~2.4±1.2 Gt yr−1 from GRACE-FO during the same time period. Furthermore, the flux across traverse-11.9±1.1 Gt yr−1 is comparable to that of ~-9.7±0.9 Gt yr−1 across the same flux gate during 1997–2009 which is calculated based on GNSS-derived ice velocity observations, considering the time period difference and uncertainties. Due to physical processes varying in space and time, regional sea-level rise (SLR) significantly deviates from the global mean. Thus, understanding and quantifying the contribution of each process to regional sea-level change is crucial to prevent low-lying inundation in preparation for future ocean conditions. In this study, we assessed to what degree sterodynamic (SD) effects (i.e., density-driven steric expansion and mass redistribution due to ocean circulation), contemporary mass redistribution (CMR), and glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) contribute relative sea-level rise around the Korean coast from 1993 to 2018, with independent observations and reanalysis datasets. The assessment showed that the tide gauge-observed SLR trend can be explained by the sum of each component at 16 of 19 locations. The major contributors to relative SLR are SD effects of 2.03±0.27 mm/yr and CMR components of 1.31±0.05 mm/yr, while GIA drives sea-level decreasing of -0.27±0.15 mm/yr on the Korean coast. It was also found that the spatial deviations of SLR are primarily caused by the SD effects. In addition, the evaluation of vertical land motion (VLM) based on altimetry and tide gauge indicates that most tide gauge locations have experienced uplift during at least altimetry period, whereas Wido station has experienced particularly high rate of subsidence that contributed to the SLR acceleration. Further examination of the impact of earth deformation due to CMR, GIA, and local process on the VLM trends demonstrated that the GIA and CMR contribute to land uplift with the average of 0.35±0.15 mm/yr and 0.17±0.05 mm/yr, respectively. On the other hand, the local processes like groundwater depletion and sediment compaction showed a wide range of variability, from -1.61 to 0.58 mm/yr, indicating a significant contribution to regional differences in vertical land motion. Despite their recognized significance on global climate and extensive research efforts, the mechanism(s) driving Heinrich Events remain(s) a subject of debate. Here, we use the 3D thermo-mechanically coupled Glacial Systems Model (GSM) to examine Hudson Strait ice stream surge cycling as well as the role of 3 factors previously hypothesized to play a critical role in Heinrich events: ice shelves, glacial isostatic adjustment, and sub-surface ocean temperature forcings. In contrast to all previous modeling studies examining HEs, the GSM uses a transient last glacial cycle climate forcing, global visco-elastic glacial isostatic adjustment model, and sub-glacial hydrology model. The results presented here are based on a high-variance sub-ensemble retrieved from North American history matching for the last glacial cycle. Over our comparatively wide sampling of the potential parameter space (52 ensemble parameters for climate forcing and process uncertainties), we find two modes of Hudson Strait ice streaming: classic binge-purge versus near continuous ice streaming with occasional shutdowns and subsequent surge onset overshoot. Our model results indicate that large ice shelves covering the Labrador Sea during the last glacial cycle only occur when extreme calving restrictions are applied. The otherwise minor ice shelves provide insignificant buttressing for the Hudson Strait ice stream. While sub-surface ocean temperature forcing leads to minor differences regarding surge characteristics, glacial isostatic adjustment does have a significant impact. Given input uncertainties, the strongest controls on ice stream surge cycling are the poorly constrained deep geothermal heat flux under Hudson Bay and Hudson Strait and the basal drag law. Decreasing the geothermal heat flux within available constraints and/or using a Coulomb sliding law instead of a Weertman-type power law leads to a shift from the near-continuous streaming mode to the binge-purge mode. Predictions for future sea-level change and ice sheet stability rely on accurate reconstructions of sea level during past warm intervals, such as the mid-Pliocene Warm Period (MPWP; 3.264 – 3.025 Ma). The magnitude of MPWP glacial cycles, and the relative contribution of meltwater sources, remains uncertain. We explore this issue by modeling glacial isostatic adjustment processes for a wide range of possible MPWP ice sheet melt zones, including North America, Greenland, Eurasia, West Antarctica, and the Wilkes Basin, Aurora Basin, and Prydz Bay Embayment in East Antarctica. As a case study, we use a series of ice histories together with a suite of viscoelastic Earth models to predict global changes in sea level from the Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) M2 glacial to the MIS KM3 interglacial. Our results indicate that, of the locations with stratigraphic constraints on Pliocene glacial–interglacial sea level amplitude, local sea-level (LSL) rise at Whanganui Basin, New Zealand, will be lower than the associated global mean sea level (GMSL) contribution from individual ice sheets by an average of ~20 %. In contrast, LSL rise at Enewetak Atoll is systematically larger than GMSL by 10 %. While no single observation (field site) can provide a unique constraint on the sources of ice melt during this period, combinations of observations have the potential to yield a stronger constraint on GMSL and to narrow the list of possible sources. GRACE and GRACE Follow-On (FO) missions provide time-variable gravity field models of unprecedented quality that allow for the hydrological, oceanic, and ice mass change studies on a global scale. However, the very low-degree coefficients derived from GRACE and GRACE-FO are of inferior quality due to thermal effects acting on satellites and malfunctioning of the onboard accelerometers. Therefore, C20 and C30 coefficients describing the Earth's oblateness and the pear shape of the Earth, respectively, are being replaced by values derived from satellite laser ranging (SLR) in the standard GRACE solutions. This study assesses the impact of the replacement of low-degree gravity field coefficients in GRACE/GRACE-FO solutions by SLR data on the trend and seasonal signals of ice mass changes in Greenland and Antarctica. We found that the replacement of the low-degree gravity field coefficients changes the estimates of trends by 4, 8, and 22 Gt/year in Greenland, West, and East Antarctica, respectively, depending on the source of SLR coefficients and period for which the coefficients are replaced. In SLR and GRACE solutions, all coefficients of the same order and the same parity of degrees are strongly correlated. Therefore, replacing only two selected coefficients may lead to a biased solution. Thus, we propose to combine GRACE with SLR solutions up to a degree and order 10 × 10 to properly consider the sensitivity of each of the techniques to gravity field coefficients, instead of replacing two coefficients from SLR in GRACE solutions. The combined solution reduces the residual trend of post-glacial rebound from 1.2 to 0.9 Gt/year and from − 57.8 to − 57.0 Gt/year in Scandinavia and South Canada, respectively, when compared to GRACE/GRACE-FO solutions with the replacement of coefficients. The SLR-GRACE combination reduces the noise in the GRACE/GRACE-FO solutions by 8%, from 38 to 35 Gt, in the Fennoscandia region. In the periods when GRACE is at the end of its mission and observations are disrupted, the weights adjust the contribution from SLR and GRACE based on relative ratio of variances from each techniques. Thus, the combined solutions are more consistent with independent geophysical models of glacial isostatic adjustment, and the combinations are affected by smaller noise than the standard GRACE solutions and properly account for different sensitivities of SLR and GRACE techniques to low-degree time-variable gravity field coefficients. A key initial step in geophysical imaging is to devise an effective means of mapping the sensitivity of an observation to the model parameters, that is to compute its Fréchet derivatives or sensitivity kernel. In the absence of any simplifying assumptions and when faced with a large number of free parameters, the adjoint method can be an effective and efficient approach to calculating Fréchet derivatives and requires just two numerical simulations. In the Glacial Isostatic Adjustment problem, these consist of a forward simulation driven by changes in ice mass and an adjoint simulation driven by fictitious loads that are applied at the observation sites. The theoretical basis for this approach has seen considerable development over the last decade. Here, we present the final elements needed to image 3-D mantle viscosity using a dataset of palaeo sea-level observations. Developments include the calculation of viscosity Fréchet derivatives (i.e. sensitivity kernels) for relative sea-level observations, a modification to the numerical implementation of the forward and adjoint problem that permits application to 3-D viscosity structure, and a recalibration of initial sea level that ensures the forward simulation honours present-day topography. In the process of addressing these items, we build intuition concerning how absolute sea-level and relative sea-level observations sense Earth's viscosity structure and the physical processes involved. We discuss examples for potential observations located in the near field (Andenes, Norway), far field (Seychelles), and edge of the forebulge of the Laurentide ice sheet (Barbados). Examination of these kernels: (1) reveals why 1-D estimates of mantle viscosity from far-field relative sea-level observations can be biased; (2) hints at why an appropriate differential relative sea-level observation can provide a better constraint on local mantle viscosity and (3) demonstrates that sea-level observations have non-negligible 3-D sensitivity to deep mantle viscosity structure, which is counter to the intuition gained from 1-D radial viscosity Fréchet derivatives. Finally, we explore the influence of lateral variations in viscosity on relative sea-level observations in the Amundsen Sea Embayment and at Barbados. These predictions are based on a new global 3-D viscosity inference derived from the shear-wave speeds of GLAD-M25 and an inverse calibration scheme that ensures compatibility with certain fundamental geophysical observations. Use of the 3-D viscosity inference leads to: (1) generally greater complexity within the kernel; (2) an increase in sensitivity and presence of shorter length-scale features within lower viscosity regions; (3) a zeroing out of the sensitivity kernel within high-viscosity regions where elastic deformation dominates and (4) shifting of sensitivity at a given depth towards distal regions of weaker viscosity. A detailed understanding of how the Antarctic ice sheet (AIS) responds to a warming climate is needed because it will most likely increase the rate of global mean sea level rise. Time-variable satellite gravimetry, realized by the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment Follow-On (GRACE-FO) missions, is directly sensitive to AIS mass changes. However, gravimetric mass balances are subject to two major limitations. First, the usual correction of the glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) effect by modelling results is a dominant source of uncertainty. Second, satellite gravimetry allows for a resolution of a few hundred kilometres only, which is insufficient to thoroughly explore causes of AIS imbalance. We have overcome both limitations by the first global inversion of data from GRACE and GRACE-FO, satellite altimetry (CryoSat-2), regional climate modelling (RACMO2), and firn densification modelling (IMAU-FDM). The inversion spatially resolves GIA in Antarctica independently from GIA modelling jointly with changes of ice mass and firn air content at 50 km resolution. We find an AIS mass balance of - 144 ± 27 Gt a -1 from January 2011 to December 2020. This estimate is the same, within uncertainties, as the statistical analysis of 23 different mass balances evaluated in the Ice sheet Mass Balance Inter-comparison Exercise (IMBIE ;). The co-estimated GIA corresponds to an integrated mass effect of 86 ± 21 Gt a -1 over Antarctica, and it fits better with global navigation satellite system (GNSS) results than other GIA predictions. From propagating covariances to integrals, we find a correlation coefficient of - 0.97 between the AIS mass balance and the GIA estimate. The evolution of the passive Armorican margin (Western France) during the Neogene and Quaternary was analyzed using field data. The morphology of the margin attests to a late Hercynian shaping, further deformation during the Mesozoic mid-Atlantic opening, during the Alpine Orogeny, and ultimately, a Late Cenozoic uplift, mostly related to an onshore isostatic accommodation in response to erosion and limited tectonic activity. A very limited strike-slip dynamic, with very low seismicity, accommodated the Neogene-Pleistocene N170 strains around the rigid Armorican terrane. The South Armorican domain and English Channel floor include shear zones that adjusted the Alpine convergence, facilitating its transpressive slip to the west. The Permo-Triassic N150 faults were reactivated during the inversion phases that began after the Bartonian under the distal control of the Alpine convergence and the decrease in the Atlantic spreading rate after 34 Ma. The Armorican marine platforms were stable after the late Eocene and slightly subsident, experiencing pulsed episodes of transient lithospheric doming during the Neogene and Quaternary. Co-seismic activity onshore without surface rupture was recorded around ~5.3 Ma, ~3.7 Ma, ~2.4-1.2 Ma, and ~400-250 ka, in tandem with an inland exhumation driven by isostatic adjustment due to an intensification of periglacial erosion at the onset of the early interstadials or by agriculture. Low-magnitude and ubiquitous shallow seismic activities seem to be related today to an isostatic uplifted old brittle-ductile transition due to the accumulation of shearing strain. Rapid sea‐level rise during the Early Holocene around the North Sea coastal lowlands provided conditions under which estuarine and coastal features, with no modern equivalents, could be created. Investigation of nearshore sediments within the Outer Humber Estuary, UK, has identified a tidal lagoonal system, created between c. 9000 and 7800 cal a bp. These sequences show the initial flooding of a carr woodland, prior to the establishment of more saline conditions as the tidal lagoonal system developed. Inter‐core comparisons, based on diatom and pollen analyses, suggest variations in the structure of a tidal lagoon setting, which probably lasted for only a brief period before being submerged by rising sea levels. The absence of an erosive contact in several of the sequences studied has permitted the creation of the oldest sea‐level index points for the Outer Humber Estuary, providing validation for the current glacial isostatic adjustment models for the region. Greenland's bedrock responds to ongoing ice loss with an elastic vertical land motion (VLM) that is measured by Greenland's Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Network (GNET). The measured VLM also contains other contributions, including the long‐term viscoelastic response of the Earth to the deglaciation of the last glacial period. Greenland's ice sheet (GrIS) produces the most significant contribution to the total VLM. The contribution of peripheral glaciers (PGs) from both Greenland (GrPGs) and Arctic Canada (CanPGs) has not carefully been accounted for in previous GNSS analyses. This is a significant concern, since GNET stations are often closer to PGs than to the ice sheet. We find that, PGs produce significant elastic rebound, especially in North and East Greenland. Across these regions, the PGs produce up to 32% of the elastic rebound. For a few stations in the North, the VLM from PGs is larger than that due to the GrIS. Plain Language Summary: The solid Earth has long been compressed by the weight of overlying ice caps and ice sheets. As climate change causes ice to melt, and these loads diminish, the solid Earth relaxes, producing instantaneous elastic rebound and delayed viscoelastic rebound of the bedrock. Such displacements are recorded by the 58 permanent Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) stations that comprise the Greenland GNSS Network (GNET). So far, only the ice mass changes from the ice sheet have been considered in the analyses of deformation recorded by GNET. Here, we evaluate the contribution from the peripheral glaciers, which are often much closer to the stations than the ice sheet. We find that at many stations, the signal produced by the peripheral glaciers is non‐negligible, especially in North and East Greenland. This allows us to better understand the residual rebound signal produced by the end of the last ice age. The early to middle Holocene was marked by considerable variability in lake levels in the Lake Superior Basin due to a combination of meltwater runoff, isostatic adjustment, shifting glacial margins, and climate change. These processes likely had a large impact on the preservation and visibility of coastal archaeological sites dating from the Early Period (Paleoindian) to the Middle Period (Shield Archaic). Of particular interest is the brief interval after 9300 cal. B.P. when ancestral Lake Superior dropped to its lowest level (Houghton) and human populations may have made incursions deeper into the basin. Elsewhere in the Upper Great Lakes, this period is associated with offshore archaeological sites submerged by rising water levels later in the Holocene. New geological data from the Thunder Bay, ON, region yield exceptional insight into the paleohydrology of the Houghton phase and, hence, the underwater archaeological prospects of this low water phase in the northern Lake Superior Basin. These data indicate that the lake reached its lowest level by at least ~9100 cal. B.P. but was highly unstable, at least initially, due to a combination of climate and meltwater runoff. Early underwater sites may be confined to two short, hydrologically closed, lowstands between ~9100 and 8700 cal. B.P. and would have been impacted by at least one lake transgression. Such sites, however, may still hold better potential for organic preservation and the visibility of large cultural features compared to their terrestrial counterparts. Coastal sites occupied when the lake was hydrologically closed may be especially well‐preserved due to rapid inundation before the gradual, and generally erosional, Nipissing transgression occurred. The interplay between climate-forced sea level change, erosional and depositional processes, and flexural isostasy in deep time on passive margin deltas remains poorly understood. We performed a series of conceptual simulations to investigate flexural isostatic responses to high-frequency fluctuations in water and sediment load associated with climatically driven sea level changes. We model a large drainage basin that discharges to a continental margin and produces a large deltaic depocenter, then prescribe synthetic and climatic-driven sea level curves of different frequencies to assess flexural response. Results show that flexural isostatic responses are bidirectional over 100–1000 kyr timescales and are in sync with the magnitude, frequency, and direction of sea level fluctuations and that isostatic adjustments play an important role in driving along-strike and cross-shelf river mouth migration and sediment accumulation. Our findings demonstrate that climate-forced sea level changes produce a feedback mechanism that results in self-sustaining creation of accommodation into which sediment is deposited and plays a major role in delta morphology and stratigraphic architecture. A sediment core from the salt marsh fringing Loch Duart, NW Scotland, UK, containing Lateglacial to Holocene sediments, was analysed using a multi-element geochemical approach to elucidate the relative sea level (RSL) and palaeoenvironmental changes associated with the deglaciation of the British and Irish Ice Sheet. Elemental and isotopic measurements of rhenium, osmium, carbon and nitrogen, X-ray fluorescence scanning, radiocarbon dating, and foraminiferal analysis produced a suite of data that complements the existing biostratigraphic framework. This suite of bio-, litho- and chemostratigraphic analyses permits discussion of RSL changes that reflect the interplay between post-glacial eustatic rise and glacio-isostatic adjustment. The osmium-isotope (187Os/188Os) data, coupled with a new age-depth model, depict an RSL fall between 16.8 and 14.1 ka cal BP at an average rate of 2 mm a-1. Falling RSL culminates in basin isolation and is followed by subsequent marine inundation from 11.6 ka cal BP. This RSL record preserves the local interaction between glacial isostatic adjustment and glacio-eustatic sea-level change, a relationship that is reflected in the sediment's 187Os/188Os signature. This is the first known application of the osmium isotope system in an isolation basin that is shown to be a viable proxy for RSL change, a technique that could be applied to glacially influenced isolation basins globally. A tectonic Plate Motion Model (PMM) is essential for geodetic applications, while contributing to the understanding of geodynamic processes affecting the Earth's surface. We introduce a PMM derived from the horizontal velocities of 518 sites extracted from the ITRF2020 solution. These sites were chosen away from plate boundaries, Glacial Isostatic Adjustment regions, and other deforming zones. Unlike the ITRF2014‐PMM, which showed no significant Origin Rate Bias (ORB), velocities used to determine the ITRF2020‐PMM exhibit a statistically significant ORB (0.74 ± 0.09 mm/yr along the Z‐component). Users are advised to add the estimated ORB to the horizontal velocities predicted by the ITRF2020‐PMM rotation poles for full consistency with the ITRF2020. However, the predicted vertical velocities resulting from the addition of the ORB should be discarded. The overall precision with which the ITRF2020 velocity field is represented by the rigid ITRF2020‐PMM is at the level of 0.25 mm/yr WRMS. Because of the relative motion between tectonic plates, plate boundaries can be either divergent (when two plates move away from each other), convergent (when two plates collide) or transform (when two plates slide past each other). Plate motion models are used to quantify the relative motions of the plates with respect to each other, and are determined using geological data or observations collected by space geodesy instruments distributed over different plates at the Earth's surface. In the latter case, space geodesy observations from the four space geodetic techniques covering more than 40 years of data are analyzed to estimate the long‐term displacements (or velocities) of each instrument in a well defined and self‐consistent global reference frame. The derived velocity field is then used to estimate a comprehensive plate motion model (PMM). The dynamics of the ice sheets on glacial-interglacial time scales are highly controlled by interactions with the solid Earth, i.e., glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA). Particularly at marine ice sheets, competing feedback mechanisms govern the migration of the ice sheet's grounding line and hence the ice sheet stability. In this study, we run coupled ice sheet–solid Earth simulations over the last two glacial cycles. For the ice sheet dynamics we apply the Parallel Ice Sheet Model PISM and for the load response of the solid Earth we use the three-dimensional viscoelastic Earth model VILMA, which, in addition, considers the gravitationally consistent redistribution of water (the sea level equation). We decided on an offline coupling between the two model components. By convergence of trajectories of the Antarctic Ice Sheet deglaciation we determine optimal coupling time step and spatial resolution and compare patterns of inferred relative sea level change since the Last Glacial Maximum with the results from previous studies. With our coupling setup we evaluate the relevance of feedback mechanisms for the glaciation and deglaciation phases in Antarctica considering different 3D Earth structures resulting in a range of load-response time scales. For rather long time scales, in a glacial climate associated with far-field sea level low stand, we find grounding line advance up to the edge of the continental shelf mainly in West Antarctica, dominated by a self-amplifying GIA feedback, which we call the 'forebulge feedback'. For the much shorter time scale of deglaciation, dominated by the Marine Ice Sheet Instability, our simulations suggest that the stabilizing GIA feedback can significantly slow-down grounding line retreat in the Ross sector, which is dominated by a very weak Earth structure (i.e. low mantle viscosity and thin lithosphere). This delaying effect prevents a Holocene grounding line retreat beyond its present-day location, which is discussed in the scientific community, supported by observational evidence at the Siple Coast and by previous model simulations. The described coupled framework, PISM-VILMA, allows for defining restart states to run multiple sensitivity simulations from. It can be easily implemented in Earth System Models (ESMs) and provides the tools to gain a better understanding of ice sheet stability on glacial time scales as well as in a warmer future climate. The vast majority of ice-sheet modelling studies rely on simplified representations of the Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (GIA), which, among other limitations, do not account for lateral variations of the lithospheric thickness and upper-mantle viscosity. In studies using 3D GIA models, this has however been shown to have major impacts on the dynamics of marine-based sectors of Antarctica, which are likely to be the greatest contributors to sea-level rise in the coming centuries. This gap in comprehensiveness is explained by the fact that 3D GIA models are computationally expensive, seldomly open-source and require the implementation of an iterative coupling scheme to converge with the history of the ice-sheet model. To close this gap between 'best' and 'tractable' GIA models, we here propose FastIsostasy, a regional GIA model capturing lateral variations of the lithospheric thickness and mantle viscosity. By means of Fast-Fourier transforms and a hybrid collocation scheme to solve its underlying partial differential equation, FastIsostasy can simulate 100,000 years of high-resolution bedrock displacement in only minutes of single-CPU computation, including the changes in sea-surface height due to mass redistribution. Despite its 2D grid, FastIsostasy parametrises the depth-dependent viscosity in a physically meaningful way and therefore represents the depth dimension to a certain extent. FastIsostasy is here benchmarked against analytical, 1D and 3D GIA solutions and shows very good agreement with them. It is fully open-source, documented with many examples and provides a straight-forward interface for coupling to an ice-sheet model. The model is benchmarked here based on its implementation in Julia, while a Fortran version is also provided to allow for compatibility with most existing ice-sheet models. This paper presents a method that modifies commercial engineering-oriented finite element packages for the modelling of Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (GIA) on a self-gravitating, compressible and spherical Earth with 3-D structures. The approach, called the iterative finite element body and surface force (FEMIBSF) approach, solves the equilibrium equation for deformation using the ABAQUS finite element package and calculates potential perturbation consistently with finite element theory, avoiding the use of spherical harmonics. The key to this approach lies in computing the mean external body forces for each finite element within the Earth and pressure on Earth's surface and core–mantle boundary (CMB). These quantities, which drive the deformation and stress perturbation of GIA but are not included in the equation of motion of commercial finite element packages, are implemented therein. The method also demonstrates how to calculate degree-1 deformation directly in the spatial domain and Earth-load system for GIA models. To validate the FEMIBSF method, loading Love numbers (LLNs) for homogeneous and layered earth models are calculated and compared with three independent GIA methodologies: the normal-mode method, the iterative body force method and the spectral-finite element method. Results show that the FEMIBSF method can accurately reproduce the unstable modes for the homogeneous compressible model and agree reasonably well with the Love number results from other methods. It is found that the accuracy of the FEMIBSF method increases with higher resolution, but a non-conformal mesh should be avoided due to creating the so-called hanging nodes. The role of a potential force at the CMB is also studied and found to only affect the long-wavelength surface potential perturbation and deformation in the viscous time regime. In conclusion, the FEMIBSF method is ready for use in realistic GIA studies, with modelled vertical and horizontal displacement rates in a disc load case showing agreement with other two GIA methods within the uncertainty level of GNSS measurements. The lithosphere and asthenosphere are fundamental to plate tectonics and many other earth processes. Vertical motions can be measured quickly and accurately by the satellite Global Positioning System, GPS and other methods. This paper describes a new analytic method for inferring the elastic and viscous properties of the lithosphere and upper mantle from the uplift rate and history of an area that has been subjected to past surface load changes. The viscous response time of the centre of loading is determined from the dimensions of the load, a loading history comprised of linear segments, an estimate of the flexural rigidity of the lithosphere and a single constraint such as the current central uplift rate. The response time is then interpreted in terms of the elastic properties of the lithosphere, and the elastic and viscous depth profiles of the underlying mantle. The method is described mathematically and then illustrated through analysis of the isostatic adjustment observed in nine areas affected by Little Ice Age glaciation. The method replicates published conclusions, extracts insights from an extensive literature, provides new ways to separate the impacts of the lithosphere and asthenosphere on uplift rates and emergence, and indicates the widespread geographic distribution of a thin asthenosphere. The Gulf of Thailand is ideal for studying eustatic sea level fluctuations in Southeast Asia due to its shallow basin and tectonic stability. However, our understanding of how this region's relative sea level (RSL) has fluctuated over the Holocene epoch is far from complete. In this study, we used lithostratigraphy, loss on ignition, grain size, and pollen analyses to reconstruct the environmental changes in the Sam Roi Yot wetland, which was significantly influenced by seawater intrusion, driven by fluctuations in RSL in the Gulf of Thailand. Therefore, the analyzed pollen records of the sediment core from the wetland reflected variabilities in the RSL in the Gulf of Thailand. Subsequently, we found that after a sea level highstand prior to 4000 cal y BP, the RSL gradually fell with two significant regressions at c. 2950 and 1850–1450 cal y BP before rising at 1450–1050 cal y BP and declining after that. The inconsistency between RSL reconstruction based on our results and the global sea level changes simulated by the Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (GIA) model further suggests that long–term El Niño Southern Oscillations (ENSO) variabilities may have played a significant role in sea level changes in the Gulf of Thailand over the Late-Holocene period. Thus, during extended El Niño or La Niña conditions, the sea level would have been consistently lower or higher than expected from eustatic and isostatic processes alone.
