Two major glaciations have been identified on land in England during the Middle Pleistocene. The earliest occurred during the Anglian Stage (= Elsterian, c. Marine Isotope Stage, MIS 12), evidence for which is best developed in lowland Britain, as well as offshore in the southern North Sea and Irish Sea basins. The second took place during the late Middle Pleistocene, with the most compelling evidence found in the West Midlands, intermediate between the Hoxnian (= Holsteinian; broadly MIS 11) and Ipswichian (= Eemian; broadly MIS 5e) interglacial stages during the Late Wolstonian Substage. Until recently this younger glacial episode was less clearly represented in the Pleistocene record and, as a result, had been little studied and weakly defined. Interpreted as the Moreton Stadial glaciation during the Late Wolstonian Substage (= Late Saalian Substage/Drenthe Stadial, c. MIS 6), it was originally recognized in the English Midlands, subsequently being identified in Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and northern East Anglia, and potentially further SW as far as the Bristol Channel. Mapping, in particular by members of the British Geological Survey, however, resulted in the Wolstonian Stage glacial deposits being thought to pre‐date the stage. This was particularly so in East Anglia where there was considerable controversy concerning the number and relationships of glacial sequences, during the 1970–1980s. Yet to the west of East Anglia there remained unequivocal evidence for glaciation during the stage, particularly in Fenland and the eastern English Midlands. Recent radiometric dating across lowland Britain on glacial sediments long thought to belong to a glaciation event in the Wolstonian Stage have now placed a geochronological control on the established regional stratigraphy and confirmed that glaciation occurred in two phases between 199 and 147 ka during the Late Wolstonian Substage. Glacial deposits are important sources of palaeoclimatic information but not all deposits are formed by processes that reflect the overall climatic conditions of a region; surge‐type glaciers undergo periodic episodes of rapid ice movement, often unrelated to ambient climatic conditions. This study examines the glacier forefields of Öldufellsjökull and western Sléttjökull, two outlet glaciers of the Mýrdalsjökull Ice Cap in southern Iceland, to identify landform characteristics indicative of past episodes of fast flow. Previous studies suggest episodes of fast flow at these glaciers in the past century. Remotely sensed data and field investigations were combined to complete a landsystem analysis of the forefields of these glaciers and an uncrewed aerial vehicle was used to collect high‐resolution imagery of areas of particular interest. Two assemblages of landsystems are identified on each forefield, which pass from streamlined landforms containing abundant flutes close to the glacier to spatially restricted bands of arcuate moraines with associated glaciofluvial and glaciolacustrine deposits more distally. This distribution of landsystem tracts has limited similarity to the current surge‐type glacier landsystem model, suggesting that other processes are controlling the development of landform–sediment assemblages. Using a high‐resolution digital elevation model of an area within the 1984 ice margin, two distinct landform types were identified that were not apparent on the coarse resolution imagery: hummocky moraine and a circular feature hypothesized to have formed as a result of water escape caused by changing hydrological regimes. The forefields of Öldufellsjökull and western Sléttjökull lack many of the characteristics typical of surge‐type landsystems and instead are more similar to the active temperate landsystem common in Iceland. Constraining the variability of soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) stocks across hillslopes in Low Arctic permafrost‐affected landscapes remains a significant challenge for improving global estimates of permafrost SOC stocks. We investigated SOC and TN stocks across hillslopes at two sites in the Arctic Foothills of Alaska, United States (Happy Valley and Sagwon Hills). Average SOC and TN stocks for the 0–1‐m depth interval were high (52.0 ± 15.1 kg C m−2 and 2.74 ± 0.82 kg N m−2) and linearly related (R2 = 0.74, p < 0.0001). Unlike soils of other permafrost and nonpermafrost landscapes, variability was greatest within rather than between hillslope positions. Furthermore, SOC and TN stocks in the surface 1 m did not exhibit strong patterns by hillslope position and were only weakly associated with major geomorphic parameters that typically predict SOC and TN stocks well in other landscapes. Although sampling at upper hillslope positions was largely limited to depths of less than 1.5 m due to the presence of coarse fragments in reworked glacial till, deeper observations at lower hillslope positions (footslopes, toeslopes, and basins) revealed significantly larger SOC stocks (92.0 ± 18.0 kg C m−2 at 2 m; 117.1 ± 10.4 kg C m−2 at 3 m). The unique small‐scale variability in ice content, cryoturbation, patterned ground, and organic layer thickness on these broad, Low Arctic sites contributes to the relatively homogeneous distribution of SOC and TN stocks across hillslope positions in the top 1 m, but a future focus on deeper sampling may reveal greater differences in SOC and TN stocks. Natural radiogenic isotopes (primarily 87Sr/86Sr) from hot springs in the Upper Geyser Basin of the Yellowstone Plateau volcanic field and associated rocks were used to evaluate groundwater flow patterns, water‐rock reactions, and the extent of mixing between various groundwater sources. Thermal waters have very low uranium concentrations and 234U/238U activity ratios near 1.0, which limit their utility as tracers in this reducing setting. Thermal waters have higher Sr concentrations (<22 ng/g) and a wide range of 87Sr/86Sr values that vary both temporally at individual discharge sites and between adjacent springs, indicating that conduits tap different subsurface reservoirs to varying degrees. Sr from local rhyolites have 87Sr/86Sr compositions that bound the range of values observed in groundwater throughout the basin. Non‐boiling springs on the west flank of the basin discharge water with low 87Sr/86Sr consistent with flow through young volcanic rocks exposed at the surface. Boiling springs in the central basin have higher 87Sr/86Sr values reflecting interactions with older, more radiogenic volcanic rocks. Variability in upwelling thermal waters requires mixing with a low 87Sr/86Sr component derived from young lava or glacial sediments, or more likely, from deeper sources of hot groundwater circulating through buried Lava Creek Tuff having intermediate 87Sr/86Sr. Isotope data constrain basin‐wide output of thermal water to 110–140 kg·s−1. Results underscore the utility of radiogenic Sr isotopes as valuable tracers of hydrothermal flow patterns and improve the understanding of temperature‐dependent water‐rock reactions in one of the largest continental hydrothermal systems on Earth. Hot springs in the central basin have compositions reflecting mixing between groundwater flowing through deeper and older, high‐87Sr/86Sr volcanic rocks and groundwater having lower 87Sr/86Sr values. The low‐87Sr/86Sr component could be derived from shallow sources (young volcanic rocks or glacial sediments) or from more‐deeply buried tuff associated with the most recent collapse of the Yellowstone caldera. The data presented here provide a means of tracing hydrothermal flow patterns in complex volcanic environments and improve the understanding of hydrothermal activity in one of the largest active continental magmatic systems on Earth. At least two global "Snowball Earth" glaciations occurred during the Neoproterozoic Era (1000-538.8 million years ago). Post-glacial surface environments during this time are recorded in cap carbonates: layers of limestone or dolostone that directly overlie glacial deposits. Postulated environmental conditions that created the cap carbonates lack consensus largely because single hypotheses fail to explain the cap carbonates' global mass, depositional timescales, and geochemistry of parent waters. Here, we present a global geologic carbon cycle model before, during, and after the second glaciation (i.e. the Marinoan) that explains cap carbonate characteristics. We find a three-stage process for cap carbonate formation: (1) low-temperature seafloor weathering during glaciation generates deep-sea alkalinity; (2) vigorous post-glacial continental weathering supplies alkalinity to a carbonate-saturated freshwater layer, rapidly precipitating cap carbonates; (3) mixing of post-glacial meltwater with deep-sea alkalinity prolongs cap carbonate deposition. We suggest how future geochemical data and modeling refinements could further assess our hypothesis. A new formation mechanism is proposed to explain the presence and characteristics of "cap carbonates": enigmatic rocks leftover from Snowball Earth events, during which Earth was globally ice-covered for millions of years in the distant past. Chile’s Torres del Paine National Park (TPNP) is one of the most impressive landscapes in southern Patagonia, with unique natural elements on the edge of the southern ice field, where knowledge of soils and ecological relationships is nonexistent. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the chemical, physical, mineralogical, and micromorphological characteristics of Holocene soils along a local toposequence representing the main vegetation types of the TPNP. The morphological, chemical, physical, and mineralogical properties of 12 soil profiles were studied and classified according to Soil Taxonomy. Coevolution of vegetation and soil taxa is clearly evident since glaciation, with podsolization under austral Nothofagus pumilio forests leading to the development of spodosols, while paludization in local depressions with Nothofagus forests allowed the formation of histosols. Slopes covered with loess and tephra led to the formation of Andisols with shrub vegetation. Predominant parent materials include till from Late Quaternary advances of southern Andean ice, Pleistocene loess, and volcanic ash from surrounding Chilean volcanoes. The parent materials were strongly influenced by Late Quaternary climatic and landscape changes following the retreat of the Last Glacial Maximum in southern Patagonia, resulting in erosional and depositional conditions (windblown loess, fluvial glacial deposits, and moraines). Stable landforms show the influence of allochthonous volcanic ash shaping Andean features, combined with the accumulation of organic matter in hydromorphic soils. Three main groups of soils have been identified: loess-rich soils, organic-rich soils, and poorly developed soils. The latter show low fertility related to recent landforms on different substrates ranging from till, rocky slopes, talus, or glacial deposits. In high mountain regions under periglacial conditions, cryoturbation features indicate seasonal frost–thaw cycles without current permafrost. The diversity of soil orders in the mountains of southern Patagonia is comparable to similar environmental conditions and latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere. Landslides in Alpine valleys pose significant hazards due to potential impacts on inhabited areas and landslide-dam formation. These valleys feature diverse glacial deposits (moraine, debris talus, and glacio-fluvio-lacustrine materials) with varying technical traits. A comprehensive study investigated a Carnic Alps landslide in northeastern Italy, focusing on moraine deposits. This entailed geological-geomorphological analyses, slope deformation monitoring, and utilisation of 2D and 3D stability models. The 19th-century landslide occurred in Tolmezzo, Friuli Venezia Giulia, and affected the Cazzaso village. Geological-geomorphological studies involved LiDAR-derived terrain models, borehole-based slope stratigraphy, and inclinometer-derived landslide characterisation. Deformation data combined GPS measurements and multi-temporal interferometric synthetic aperture radar. Reconstructing the slope's geological model, stability assessments employed 2D and 3D limit equilibrium methods, factoring in groundwater and seismicity. We present 40 new 10 Be exposure ages of moraines and other glacial deposits left behind by the southeastern sector of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) in southern New England and New York, summarize the regional moraine record, and interpret the dataset in the context of previously published deglaciation chronologies. The regional moraine record spans the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), with the outermost ridge of the terminal complex dating to ∼ 26–25 ka, the innermost ridge of the terminal complex dating to ∼ 22 ka, and a series of smaller recessional limits within ∼ 50 km of the terminal complex dating to ∼ 21–20.5 ka. The chronology generally agrees with independent age constraints from radiocarbon and glacial varves. A few inconsistencies between ages from cosmogenic-nuclide measurements and those from other dating methods are explained by geological scatter, where several bedrock samples and boulders from the outer terminal moraine exhibit nuclide inheritance, while some exposure ages of large moraines are likely affected by postdepositional disturbance. The exposure age chronology places the southeastern sector of the LIS at or near its maximum extent, from ∼ 26 to 21 ka, which is broadly consistent with the LGM sea-level lowstand, local and regional temperature indicators, and local summer insolation. The net change in LIS extent, represented by this chronology, occurred more slowly (< 5 to 25 m yr -1) than the subsequent retreat through the rest of New England, consistent with a slow general rise in insolation and modeled summer temperature. We conclude that the major pulse of LIS deglaciation and accelerated recession, recorded by dated glacial deposits north of the moraines discussed here, did not begin until after atmospheric CO 2 increased around 18 ka, marking the onset of Termination I. The persistence and size of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) through the Pleistocene is uncertain. This is important because reconstructing changes in the GrIS determines its contribution to sea level rise during prior warm climate periods and informs future projections. To understand better the history of Greenland's ice, we analyzed glacial till collected in 1993 from below 3 km of ice at Summit, Greenland. The till contains plant fragments, wood, insect parts, fungi, and cosmogenic nuclides showing that the bed of the GrIS at Summit is a long-lived, stable land surface preserving a record of deposition, exposure, and interglacial ecosystems. The Sjuøyane archipelago is the northernmost land area of Svalbard; thus, it provides a window to study the terrestrial glacial history and dynamics of the Svalbard–Barents Sea Ice Sheet and complement marine geological studies in the region. To reconstruct the glacial history of Sjuøyane, we describe coastal sedimentary sections in Quaternary sediments and constrain their chronology by radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence ages. Erratic boulders and bedrock are sampled for 10Be cosmogenic exposure dating, aiming to determine the deglaciation age and exposure history. Holocene environments are studied based on lake sediments and emerging vegetation from retreating snow patches. The sedimentary sections largely consist of shallow (glacio‐)marine and/or littoral sediments deposited during high relative sea levels. The radiocarbon and luminescence ages suggest they formed during a Middle Weichselian interstadial and after the Late Weichselian glaciation. A wave‐washed bedrock erosional notch and rounded boulders at 36±1 m a.h.t. most likely formed during this interstadial. Most of the cosmogenic 10Be ages are older than the last deglaciation, likely indicating a complex exposure history. One boulder sample suggests that the lowlands were deglaciated 14.7±1.82 ka ago, and two boulder samples with ages of 18.94±3.26 and 22.89±4.05 ka suggest that the highlands were possibly ice‐free at this time. The lake sediments from Isvatnet, Phippsøya, consist of glaciolacustrine silt and clay overlain by gyttja. The gyttja has accumulated at least since 7.0 cal. ka BP. Two radiocarbon ages from emerging vegetation suggest Neoglacial cooling since 3.8 cal. ka BP. A patchy glacial drift at the surface of Sjuøyane and well‐preserved pre‐Late Weichselian sediments suggest that the Late Weichselian glaciation was non‐erosive and/or cold‐based at this part of the north margin of the Svalbard–Barents Sea Ice Sheet. With the increasing need for rare-earth elements (REEs) to reach the goals of the ongoing green energy transition, new and innovative methods are needed to identify new primary resources of these critical metals. This study explores the potential to use a non-biased, uniform till dataset to generate evidentiary layers that describe these critical factors and geochemical anomalies to aid mineral potential mapping (MPM) for REEs using machine-assisted methods. The till samples used in this study were collected from the "REE Line", a sub-region within the Bergslagen lithotectonic province, Sweden, where numerous REE mineralizations occur. Multiple approaches were used in this study to isolate geochemical anomalies using multivariate methods, namely principal component analysis (PCA) and K-means clustering. Additional factors for classifying till samples were also tested, including alteration indices. Using known REE occurrences in Bergslagen as validation points, the results demonstrated the usefulness of multivariate methods applied to till geochemistry for predictive bedrock mapping, and to identify potential areas of REE mineralization within the REE line. The results of the alteration indices showed that the till geochemistry demonstrated similar levels of alteration when compared to the underlying bedrock, allowing for a regional alteration map to be generated. These results show that regional-scale till sampling can provide low-cost data for mineral exploration at the regional scale and generate usable evidentiary layers for GIS-based MPM. The end of the Neoproterozoic global ice age has promoted the evolution of the Earth's surface system and initiated the 'Great Explosion of Life'. Glaciation deposits provide valuable insights into the extreme climate conditions. In the southern margin of the North China Craton (NCC), an Ediacaran glacial deposit named 'Luoquan Formation' has been recently described in Luonan County, Shaanxi Province. It has significant characteristics of dark grey and black glacial deposits. Through extensive research in sedimentology, geochemistry and geochronology, the glacial sedimentary evolution sequence of the Luoquan Formation has been established. This research also help to define the age of the formation and reveal its provenance and sedimentary environment. The study reveals that four lithofacies associations were identified in the Luoquan Formation: diamictites, carbonates, dropstone‐bearing rock and black shale. The Luoquan Formation has experienced three cycles of glacial advance–retreat. Sedimentological evidence suggests that the sedimentary environments of the Luoquan Formation evolved from subglacial (diamictite) to intertidal, then to intertidal lagoon, or from subglacial deposits to shoreface (inner shelf, subtidal), then to deep water basin and fine‐grained turbidite and ice‐rafting. The age of the Luoquan Formation is estimated to be 562–550 Ma constrained by indirect chronological and paleontological data, maybe representing an Upper Ediacaran glaciation that occurred later than the Gaskiers glaciation. The overall age profile of detrital zircons from the Luoquan Formation can be divided into six groups, ranging from 1.1 to 1.6, 1.85 to 1.95, ~2.1, ~2.3, ~2.5 and 2.65 to 2.9 Ga. These age groups are consistent with the Archean to Meso‐Neoproterozoic magmatic–tectonic events in the southern margin of NCC, indicating they are ascribed to an origination directly from the southern margin of NCC. The Luoquan Formation exhibits the characteristics of isochronous and different sedimentary facies, with the glacial front moving from north to south. The discovery of Luoquan Formation in Lianshuigou section not only reflects the important significance of the restoration and reconstruction of the Ediacaran ice age, paleoenvironment and palaeogeography of the NCC but also provides significant evidence to support the further subdivision and correlation within the Ediacaran glacial deposits globally. Extreme (i.e., centennial‐scale) floods are by definition rare and can therefore be difficult to study. As a result, case studies of response to extreme floods can provide unique insights. On 15 November 2021, the Nicola River in British Columbia, Canada, experienced a 200‐year flood that increased the average width of the Nicola River by more than 50% (35 m), leaving the only highway in the region impassable for nearly 12 months. This research assesses the spatial variability of erosion along a 71‐km‐long segment of the Nicola River during a period with a large flood (2015–2018) and a second period containing the extreme flood in 2021 (2018–2021). We use a random forest statistical analysis to explore the most important valley and channel characteristics affecting relative widening during both periods. Unit stream power, gradient and valley confinement were the primary determinants of erosion during the extreme flood, whereas vegetation cover, channel pattern and surficial material were less important. Erosion during the large flood event was not related to these variables, with channel pattern providing a better indication of widening potential. As the Nicola River is flanked by erodible glacial deposits, this work provides important insight into river response in the paraglacial environments that are common throughout much of Canada and the northern United States, as well as Europe and Asia, but less intensely studied. In these settings, the geomorphic response to large floods may not be representative of the potential erosion (and infrastructure impacts) that can occur during extreme events, which destabilize glacial terraces in confined reaches. Historical observations should therefore be used with caution in paraglacial settings as extreme events may not be captured in available data, creating a perception of stability in confined reaches that may have the potential to erode dramatically during extreme events. HiRISE images and digital elevation models (DEMs) of outcrops in candidate Martian glaciovolcanoes provide more detailed evidence for glaciovolcanic processes than has previously been available for Mars. A group of ridges in the Pavonis Mons fan‐shaped glacial deposit features pervasive layering, evidence for local collapse and slumping, and steeper faces in the direction of paleoglacier flow inferred from other features in the deposit. After comparison with terrestrial analogs, we conclude that these ridges are excellent candidates for tephra‐dominated tindar, formed in phreatomagmatic subglacial eruptions. The englacial meltwater lakes required for a phreatomagmatic origin represent a rare example of voluminous surface water bodies in the Late Amazonian of Mars. Plain Language Summary: Steep‐sided landforms in glacial deposits next to volcanoes are good places to look for evidence that lava and ice interacted. We studied high‐resolution images of a steep‐sided ridge in a glacial deposit on the Pavonis Mons volcano on Mars, and used two of the images to make a 3‐D model of the ridge. The distinctly layered beds of rock that make up the ridge, the depressions in nearby ridges, the evidence that part of the ridge collapsed while it was being built, and the way the slope of the ridge changes with location are very similar to landforms on Earth called "tephra‐dominated tindar". This suggests that the Martian ridge formed in a long‐lived body of liquid water, which have been very uncommon on Mars for the past few hundred million years. Climate warming is causing widespread deglaciation and pioneer soil formation over glacial deposits. Melting glaciers expose rocky terrain and glacial till sediment that is relatively low in biomass, oligotrophic, and depleted in nutrients. Following initial colonization by microorganisms, glacial till sediments accumulate organic carbon and nutrients over time. However, the mechanisms driving soil nutrient stabilization during early pedogenesis after glacial retreat remain unclear. Here, we traced amino acid uptake by microorganisms in recently deglaciated high-Arctic soils and show that fungi play a critical role in the initial stabilization of the assimilated carbon. Pioneer basidiomycete yeasts were among the predominant taxa responsible for carbon assimilation, which were associated with overall high amino acid use efficiency and reduced respiration. In intermediate-and late-stage soils, lichenized ascomycete fungi were prevalent, but bacteria increasingly dominated amino acid assimilation, with substantially decreased fungal:bacterial amino acid assimilation ratios and increased respiration. Together, these findings demonstrate that fungi are important drivers of pedogenesis in high-Arctic ecosystems that are currently subject to widespread deglaciation from global warming. This paper examines the hypothesis that Waun Mawn in West Wales provided the bluestone monoliths that were used at Stonehenge. Some archaeologists believe that the site supports the last remains of a giant stone circle or 'Proto Stonehenge' which was dismantled and transported to Salisbury Plain around 5000 years ago. It was claimed, after three excavation seasons at Waun Mawn in 2017, 2018 and 2021, that there is firm evidence of some standing stones which were later removed or broken up, but it has still not been demonstrated that there ever was a small stone circle here, let alone a 'giant' one. Furthermore, there have been no control studies in the neighbourhood which might demonstrate that the speculative feature has any unique characteristics. There is nothing at Waun Mawn to link this site in any way to Stonehenge, and this is confirmed by recent cited research. No evidence has been brought forward in support of the claim that 'this was one of the great religious and political centres of Neolithic Britain'. It is concluded that at Waun Mawn and elsewhere in West Wales there has been substantial 'interpretative inflation' driven by the desire to demonstrate a Stonehenge connection. Dam failures due to changing hydroclimate and ageing infrastructure pose a significant threat to downstream river systems and communities. The detailed geomorphic effects of catastrophic dam failures are not well known because of a lack of high‐resolution topographic data before and after failures. On 19 May 2020, the 17‐m‐tall Edenville and 11‐m‐tall Sanford dams near Midland, Michigan, USA, failed as a result of significant rainfall over the preceding 2 days. We analysed the geomorphic impacts of these failures using a pre‐failure airborne lidar dataset and three uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV)‐based lidar surveys collected 2 weeks, 3 months and 11 months after failure. Our survey following the dam failure revealed 47 100 ± 11 900 m3 of net floodplain erosion and 17 300 ± 4200 m3 of net deposition downstream of the Edenville and Sanford dam breaches, respectively. Over the year following failure, most geomorphic change was confined to new knickpoints migrating slowly through underlying glacial till substrate, with little change to riverbanks or surrounding floodplains. A lack of impounded reservoir sediment and antecedent downstream topography, including valley width and the location of the breaches relative to the river below the dams, contributed to relatively modest geomorphic changes despite the magnitude of water released. The surface coating of biopores plays a pivotal role in mediating mass exchange between the biopore and the soil matrix, ultimately governing preferential flow in structured soils. However, quantitative experiments of the flow exchange dynamics in the soil around an earthworm burrow (drilosphere) are limited. Here, we developed an experimental setup to mimic preferential flow within a biopore while monitoring the water distribution by neutron radiography. The objective was to quantify the evolving water content distribution in the biopore with surrounding drilosphere samples from Bt and C horizons. We hypothesize that the distribution of clay and organic material across biopore surfaces in Bt and C horizons impacts the biopore coating material formation (i.e., composition and thickness), thereby influencing its role in controlling mass exchange during preferential flow events. The experimental setup was proposed for in situ quantification of the preferential flow dynamics in an earthworm burrow (biopore) passing through Bt and C horizons of a Luvisol developed on glacial till. The neutron radiographies were obtained at the NEUtron Transmission Radiography facility of the Paul Scherrer Institut, Villingen. The volumetric water content was quantified by calibrating gray scale values from radiography images with defined water contents using stepped aluminum cuvettes attached to the samples; image analysis was used to determine sorptivity at the biopore–soil matrix interface. The water exchange flow was found to be smaller for coated biopore surface in the more clayey Bt horizon, as compared to the coarser textured carbonaceous subsoil C horizon, where higher sorptivity intensified mass exchange. The method most realistically captured the dynamics of the vertical preferential flow process in a biopore, including lateral exchange flow, by determining the water sorptivity of the drilosphere. In contrast to mini‐infiltrometer data, biopore–matrix exchange flow was here more restricted for Bt in contrast to carbonaceous C horizon. Since both horizons showed the presence of coating material on their burrow walls, the results suggest further analysis of their contrasting properties and structures. Characterizing the 3D distribution of hydraulic properties in glacial sediments is challenging due to fine‐scale heterogeneity and complexity. Borehole lithological data provide high vertical resolution but low horizontal resolution. Geophysical methods can fill gaps between boreholes, providing improved horizontal resolution but low vertical resolution. Machine learning can combine borehole and geophysical data to overcome these challenges. However, few studies have compared multiple machine learning methods for predicting hydrofacies in glacial aquifer systems. This study uses colocated airborne electromagnetic resistivity and borehole lithology data to train multiple machine learning models and predict the 3D distribution of hydrofacies in glacial deposits of eastern Nebraska, USA. Random Forest, Gradient Boosting Classifier, Extreme Gradient Boosting, Multilayer Perceptron, and Stacking Classifier were used to model 3D probabilistic distributions of hydrofacies (sand and clay) at a grid size of 200 m × 200 m × 3 m. Comparison of the predicted 3D hydrofacies models shows that the probability distributions and the contrasts between hydrofacies vary. The classification metrics show that the Stacking Classifier model performed better than other machine learning models in predicting hydrofacies. Multi‐Layer Perceptron and Stacking Classifier models show sharp vertical transitions between the low and high sand probability while other machine learning models show gradual transitions. K‐means clustering was used to translate the Stacking Classifier model into a 4‐class hydraulic conductivity model. This study shows that machine learning methods advance our understanding of glacial hydrogeology by improving the vertical and horizontal resolution of hydrofacies distribution and resolving aquifer‐aquifer and stream‐aquifer connections. Plain Language Summary: Sediments deposited by glaciers are host to numerous aquifers globally, including the northern USA, providing an important source of groundwater. The size, shape, and physical properties of these aquifers are highly variable, so predicting groundwater flow and resource availability is a challenge. We used machine learning and data from airborne geophysics and boreholes to generate high‐resolution, 3D models of a glacial aquifer in Nebraska, USA. We compare and contrast five different machine learning models, showing that there are differences in the models' performances and abilities to construct geologically plausible results. These models help estimate the aquifer properties, locate aquifer boundaries, and provide a basis for constructing numerical models of groundwater flow. This paper presents sedimentological and paleobotanical studies of the deposits from Last Glaciation (Late Nemunas, Late Weichselian) in the middle reaches of the River Nemunas in southern Lithuania. Spores, pollen, and other palynomorphs in the intercalated sediments between the diamicton (glacial till) beds were analyzed, and the paleogeographical and paleoclimatic conditions of their sedimentation were assessed using the modern analog technique (MAT). The two till layers from the Last Glaciation, characterized by significant differences in their composition, testify to a difference in glacier movement paths in the region. The continuous sedimentation process between glacial tills provides evidence of global climate changes during the Last Glaciation and the restructuring of glacial lobes during deglaciation in the southeastern part of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet. The sedimentation process and vegetation composition bear witness to an open landscape of steppe-tundra, scattered wooded areas, and the emergence of thermophilic vegetation afterward, suggesting increased annual temperatures and higher humidity. The available data enable the identification of the Balbieriškis interstage period within the Late Nemunas Glaciation (Upper Nemunas Formation) between the Grūda and Baltija stages (Grūda and Baltija subformations) in the regional Quaternary stratigraphic scheme. We introduce a georeferenced dataset of Net Ecosystem Exchange (NEE), Ecosystem Respiration (ER) and meteo-climatic variables (air and soil temperature, air relative humidity, soil volumetric water content, pressure, and solar irradiance) collected at the Nivolet Plain in Gran Paradiso National Park (GPNP), western Italian Alps, from 2017 to 2023. NEE and ER are derived by measuring the temporal variation of CO2 concentration obtained by the enclosed chamber method. We used a customised portable non-steady-state dynamic flux chamber, paired with an InfraRed Gas Analyser (IRGA) and a portable weather station, measuring CO2 fluxes at a number of points (around 20 per site and per day) within five different sites during the snow-free season (June to October). Sites are located within the same hydrological basin and have different geological substrates: carbonate rocks (site CARB), gneiss (GNE), glacial deposits (GLA, EC), alluvial sediments (AL). This dataset provides relevant and often missing information on high-altitude mountain ecosystems and enables new comparisons with other similar sites, modelling developments and validation of remote sensing data. Micrometeorites are estimated to represent the main part of the present flux of extraterrestrial matter found on the Earth's surface and provide valuable samples to probe the interplanetary medium. Here, we describe large and representative collections of micrometeorites currently available to the scientific community. These include Antarctic collections from surface ice and snow, as well as glacial sediments from the eroded top of nunataks—summits outcropping from the icesheet—and moraines. Collections extracted from deep-sea sediments (DSS) produced a large number of micrometeorites, in particular, iron-rich cosmic spherules that are rarer in other collections. Collections from the old and stable surface of the Atacama Desert show that finding large numbers of micrometeorites is not restricted to polar regions or DSS. The advent of rooftop collections marks an important step into involving citizen science in the study of micrometeorites, as well as providing potential sampling locations over all latitudes to explore the modern flux. We explore their strengths of the collections to address specific scientific questions and their potential weaknesses. The future of micrometeorite research will involve the finding of large fossil micrometeorite collections and benefit from recent advances in sampling cosmic dust directly from the air. Oil spills and natural oil seeps are sources of petrogenic hydrocarbons in soils and sediments. To determine the source of hydrocarbon contamination in the environment the geochemical signature of the contaminant needs to be characterised. Here, we present biomarker and other molecular marker diagnostic ratios of Alberta Oil Sands using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to characterise the deposits and detect their incorporation in surficial sediments. Diagnostic ratios of steranes, terpanes, and aromatic steroids (e.g. C27, C28, and C29 regular sterane abundance, Gammacerane Index, Ts/Tm, TAS/(TAS + MAS), and MPI-2) were measured in samples of Alberta Oil Sands providing a set of criteria for their identification. Seven surficial sediment samples from central and southeast Alberta were then analysed using these criteria to detect Alberta Oil Sands contamination and other petrogenic and pyrogenic source inputs. Geochemical signatures consistent with Alberta Oil Sands hydrocarbons were identified in surficial sediments in Lamont County and glacial sediments from a moraine in Beaver County. Both sites are in Central Alberta, ∼300 km south of any oil sands extraction sites and natural exposures in northern Alberta, indicating long-distance sediment transport processes mobilised the deposits. These results show that the oil sands have been eroded and transported beyond the boundaries of their current known limits. Recent advances in the characterization of metasomatic iron and alkali-calcic (MIAC) systems with associated iron-oxide apatite (IOA) prospects and iron-oxide–copper–gold (IOCG) and metasomatic cobalt deposits of the Great Bear magmatic zone were used to determine if the geochemistry of glacial sediments can unveil pathfinder elements indicative of mineralization and associated alteration. Analysis of variance within bedrock lithogeochemical (n = 707 samples) and till geochemical datasets (n = 92 samples) are compared. Results show that Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, As, Mo, Bi, La, Th, U, and W were identified as potential vectoring elements in different fractions of till due to their anomalous concentrations down-ice of various mineralized outcrops within the study area. For instance, Fe, Co, Cu, and Mo were established as the most useful vectoring elements in the locally derived till (<2 km down-ice) near the Sue Dianne IOCG deposit, and Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Mo, W, Bi, and U near the Fab IOCG prospect. At the Sue Dianne deposit, the ratios of near-total (4-acid digestion) versus partial (modified aqua regia digestion) concentrations in the silt + clay-sized till fraction (<0.063 mm) for both La and Th reflect the mineralization alteration signature and define a more consistent dispersal train from mineralization compared to element concentrations mapped alone. Additional testing in an area of continuous till cover near an isolated point source is recommended to further develop the elemental ratio method for exploration of MIAC systems. Quantitatively estimating the global mean precipitation (GMP) throughout Earth's history is crucial for enhancing our understanding of long-term climate evolution and the hydrological cycle. However, currently there is no established methodology for estimating global mean paleoprecipitation. Here, we present the first study that estimates GMP in the Phanerozoic era. The relationship between GMP and global mean surface temperature (GMST) is investigated by analyzing data from 23 models in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6). The result reveals consistent and significant impact of temperature on precipitation, with a sensitivity range of 2–3 % K−1. Additionally, we propose a method for accessing latitudinal variations in precipitation caused by land area distributions and paleo-Köppen climatic belts. These climatic belts are determined based on geological indicators such as coals, evaporites, and glacial deposits. The GMP is thus quantitatively estimated by combining variations in GMST, land area distributions, and paleo-köppen climatic belts, spanning from 540 Ma to the present day. The quantitative GMP curve demonstrates fluctuations in GMP about 500 mm yr−1, with values ranging from 948 to 1442 mm yr−1 over the Phanerozoic era. This curve aligns closely with findings derived from numerical simulations. Large stratovolcanoes in the Cascade Range have high equilibrium-line altitudes that support glaciers whose Holocene and latest Pleistocene advances are amenable to dating. Glacier advances produced datable stratigraphic sequences in lateral moraines, which complement dating of end moraines. New mapping of glacial deposits on Mount Rainier using LIDAR and field observations supports a single latest Pleistocene or early Holocene advance. Rainier R tephra overlies deposits from this advance and could be as old as >11.6 ka; the advance could be of Younger Dryas age. Radiocarbon ages on wood interbedded between tills in the lateral moraines of Nisqually, Carbon, and Emmons glaciers and the South Tahoma glacier forefield suggest glacier advances between 200 and 550 CE, correlative with the First Millennium Advance in western Canada, and during the Little Ice Age (LIA) beginning as early as 1300 CE. These results resolve previous contradictory interpretations of Mount Rainier's glacial history and indicate that the original proposal of a single pre-Neoglacial cirque advance is correct, in contrast to a later interpretation of two advances of pre- and post-Younger Dryas age, respectively. Meanwhile, the occurrence of the pre-LIA Burroughs Mountain Advance, interpreted in previous work as occurring 3–2.5 ka, is questionable based on inherently ambiguous interpretations of tephra distribution. Although extensive investigations have been performed on soil anisotropy, little information is available regarding its quantification. The quantification of anisotropy reflects the extent to which the inherent anisotropy of soil controls its mechanical behavior and so it is crucial for connecting comprehensive experimental research with soil constitutive models and engineering practices. The present study evaluates the level of shear strength anisotropy in various types of soil. A database is compiled of the variations of shear strength with the direction of major principal stress (α) as established via hollow-cylinder torsional shear tests, covering more than 20 types of soil. This study reviews critically the existing methods for strength anisotropy, finding none of them quantifies anisotropy satisfactorily. The present study proposes using the bracketed area by the S(α)/S(0)–α curve and the line S(α)/S(0) = 1 to measure the level of strength anisotropy, where S(α) is the soil strength as a function of α. The proposed method in this study can measure the strength anisotropy levels of sands, silts, clays, residual soil, calcareous sand, mudstone, and glacial till, among others. Additionally, the anisotropy degree measured using the proposed method appears to be consistent with the results of microstructural anisotropy evaluations. This study enhances the understanding of soil anisotropy by providing a comprehensive database of soil strength anisotropy and proposing a general method for its quantification. This paper examines a flowslide involving a glacial deposit of low-plasticity silty sand triggered by a karstic spring after a rainfall period. The work aims at explaining the triggering, propagation and kinematics of flow-like landslides in a unique framework. In particular, a material point method open-source code, able to solve coupled hydro-mechanical problems for saturated/unsaturated soils, was developed. Laboratory and field experiments revealed a liquefaction potential of the mobilised material. To simulate such potential, a recent liquefaction model (Ta-Ger), validated so far at a laboratory scale, was selected, extended to unsaturated conditions, implemented and calibrated. The analysis indicates a complex behaviour of the moving mass and explains the mechanisms developing sequentially in the flowslide. The impact of the upper unstable soil mass against the soil at lower elevations is a key phenomenon to generalise soil liquefaction in the entire slope. Patterns of soil velocity and displacements are far from being a uniform flow of liquefied material. The model developed is a powerful tool to interpret flowslides involving a saturated and unsaturated soil profile. The paper includes sensitivity analyses and discusses the discrepancies observed in the run-up of the flowslide climbing on the opposite slope of the valley. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents five sites located in the marginal zone of the Wartanian stadial within the Odranian Glaciation (MIS6a) on the border of the Central Polish Uplands and Lowlands, representing different glacial forms and geological structures: terminal moraine hill, undulating moraine hill, sedimentary margin of the ice sheet, kame hill, and outwash plain. This differentiation is also reflected in the petrographic composition of the gravels and the interesting surface microstructures of the Scandinavian erratic boulders. This small study area, with its high geodiversity, which we have identified and investigated, has considerable potential for sustainable development. Geotourism is a tool for this development in a peripheral tourist region, providing both economic benefits for the local population and conservation services for the geoecosystem. The dating of moraine deposits can present challenges to standard geochronological methods; terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide (TCN), sediment luminescence and radiocarbon dating may suffer from problems of incomplete resetting (by inheritance, intermittent cover/exposure, transport under unfavourable conditions) and/or a lack of suitable (organic) material. Rock surface luminescence burial dating (RSLBD) offers an alternative approach with considerable potential in dating moraines. In RSLBD, large cobbles/boulders are targeted, rather than smaller grains usually used in luminescence dating. The age limit of RSLBD is much higher than that of radiocarbon dating, and rocks are much more readily available than organic material. In contrast to TCN dating, the effect of exposure prior to deposition can be measured. In this study, we sampled a broad selection of primarily granitic boulders of various sizes and shapes (e.g. different degrees of roundness and sphericity) from the Vimmerby Moraine, a prominent and accessible feature in southern Sweden dated using TCN to 14.4±0.9 ka. Our study was designed to test whether morphological characteristics can be used to discriminate in favour of the most light‐exposed boulders and minimize measurements of non‐exposed boulders. As expected, not all RSLBD ages can be attributed to the same depositional event, but the majority of the resulting ages provide a mean age of 13.0±1.5 ka, consistent with the cosmogenic nuclide dating of the Vimmerby Moraine. Despite the apparently successful TCN study, the luminescence–depth profiles measured in the buried surfaces of the sampled clasts indicate that >50% of these moraine boulders were exposed to light (and cosmic radiation) before final deposition, implying some (presumably small) TCN inheritance; seven of the 16 boulders identified as light exposed were sufficiently bleached to be useful for RSLBD. The Scandinavian topography and bathymetry have been shaped by ice through numerous glacial cycles in the Quaternary. In this study, we investigate how the changing morphology has influenced the Scandinavian ice sheet (SIS) in return. We use a higher-order ice-sheet model to simulate the SIS through a glacial period on three different topographies, representing different stages of glacial landscape evolution in the Quaternary. By forcing the three experiments with the same climate conditions, we isolate the effects of a changing landscape morphology on the evolution and dynamics of the ice sheet. We find that early Quaternary glaciations in Scandinavia were limited in extent and volume by the pre-glacial bathymetry until glacial deposits filled depressions in the North Sea and built out the Norwegian shelf. From middle–late Quaternary (∼0.5 Ma) the bathymetry was sufficiently filled to allow for a faster southward expansion of the ice sheet causing a relative increase in ice-sheet volume and extent. Furthermore, we show that the formation of The Norwegian Channel during recent glacial periods restricted southward ice-sheet expansion, only allowing for the ice sheet to advance into the southern North Sea close to glacial maxima. Finally, our experiments indicate that different stretches of The Norwegian Channel may have formed in distinct stages during glacial periods since ∼0.5 Ma. These results highlight the importance of accounting for changes in landscape morphology through time when inferring ice-sheet history from ice-volume proxies and when interpreting climate variability from past ice-sheet extents. Based on the analysis of the geological context and palynological studies performed on lake and bog sediments in the Southern Podlasie Lowland, a new concept of the maximum extent of the Odranian Glaciation (Saalian, MIS 6) is presented for the study area. It is depicted by the Siedlce-Łosice-Kornica zone of end moraines, which so far was considered as stadial-rank or as the Wartanian ice sheet limit. To the south of this zone, near Biała Podlaska and in the Łuków Plain, there occur numerous sites with fossil deposits of the Mazovian Interglacial (MIS 11c). Sites with new documentation, i.e., Wólka Domaszewska, Kolonia Bystrzycka, Przytulin, Hermanów, and Skrzynka are located about 30 km to the south and 60 km to the west of the Biała Podlaska area. Palynological analysis unequivocally indicates the presence of a vegetation succession characteristic of the Mazovian Interglacial. In all sites, deposits of the Mazovian Interglacial are covered by lacustrine sediments of the Liviecian Glaciation (Fuhne, MIS 11b-MIS 10) or mineral sediments of the Vistulian Glaciation (Weichselian, MIS 2) and the Holocene. The sediments infill paleolakes carved in glacial tills of the Sanian 2 Glaciation (MIS 12). The lake sediments of the Mazovian Interglacial and the overlying biogenic and mineral deposits occur in the analysed sites directly below the surface. They are never covered by glacial deposits, which suggests that the Odranian ice sheet did not cover the study area. The location of the lake and bog sites with their geological analysis allow for the precise depiction of the eastern limit of the Odranian ice sheet lobe, which in the study area correlates with the limit suggested in the late 19th century. The study focuses on the geochronology and correlation between loesses and glacial tills in the Vistula catchment in Poland, in an area covered by all Scandinavian ice-sheets and characterized by thick loess successions. The basis for this correlation was a litostratigraphic analysis of selected loess sites in the uplands, which are well-documented in the literature, and the occurrences of loess and loess-like deposits under the cover of glacial deposits in the lowland part of the Vistula catchment, characterized by a much sparser documentation. The nomenclature of loess horizons follows Maruszczak (2001) and Kukla (1987), but sometimes is significantly changed, according to modern Quaternary stratigraphical schemes. According to the analysis, accumulation of almost all loess horizons distinguished so far has been documented in the Pleistocene succession of the Vistula catchment: the oldest - lower (LNd), middle (LNs), and upper (LNg); older: lower (LSd), middle (LSs), and upper (LSg); and younger: lowest (LMn), lower (LMd), middle (LMs), and upper (LMg). In most cases loess accumulation took place in steppe-tundra conditions preceding the maximum ice-sheet development during the succeeding Scandinavian glaciations. For selected sites, the loess occurrence is presented in superposition to glacial tills and interglacial deposits. The distinguished loesses and glacial tills are tied to the stratigraphic schemes of the Pleistocene in Poland (Marks et al. 2016, 2019) and correlated with Ukrainian loess horizons (Łanczont et al. 2019). The Galloway Hills in southwest Scotland are characterized by glacial drift, lakes, and extensive areas of blanket and basin mire. The climate is oceanic, with an average rainfall of 2300 mm per year and a mean temperature range of 2.0-13.4 °C. The original woodland of the area has been largely replaced by conifer plantations. Loch Doon IV is a deep mire located west of Loch Doon, with sediment dating back to the early Holocene. The pollen record from the site shows changes in vegetation and land use over time, including the spread of arboreal taxa and evidence of burning related to hunter-gatherer activity. Occurrences of natural magnesium alumina silicate hydrate (M-(A)-S-H) cement are present in Feragen and Leka, in eastern and western Trøndelag Norway, respectively. Both occurrences are in the subarctic climate zone and form in glacial till and moraine material deposited on ultramafic rock during the Weichselian glaciation. Weathering of serpentinized peridotite dissolves brucite and results in an alkaline fluid with a relatively high pH which subsequently reacts with the felsic minerals of the till (quartz, plagioclase, K-feldspar) to form a cement consisting of an amorphous material or a mixture of nanocrystalline Mg-rich phyllosilicates, including illite. The presence of plagioclase in the till results in the enrichment of alumina in the cement, i.e., forms M-A-S-H instead of the M-S-H cement. Dissolution of quartz results in numerous etch pits and negative quartz crystals filled with M-A-S-H cement. Where the quartz dissolution is faster than the cement precipitation, a honeycomb-like texture is formed. Compositionally, the cemented till (tillite) contains more MgO and has a higher loss of ignition than the till, suggesting that the cement is formed by a MgO fluid that previously reacted with the peridotite. The M-(A)-S-H cemented till represents a new type of duricrust, coined magsilcrete. The Black Sea is a permanently anoxic, marine basin serving as model system for the deposition of organic‐rich sediments in a highly stratified ocean. In such systems, archaeal lipids are widely used as paleoceanographic and biogeochemical proxies; however, the diverse planktonic and benthic sources as well as their potentially distinct diagenetic fate may complicate their application. To track the flux of archaeal lipids and to constrain their sources and turnover, we quantitatively examined the distributions and stable carbon isotopic compositions (δ13C) of intact polar lipids (IPLs) and core lipids (CLs) from the upper oxic water column into the underlying sediments, reaching deposits from the last glacial. The distribution of IPLs responded more sensitively to the geochemical zonation than the CLs, with the latter being governed by the deposition from the chemocline. The isotopic composition of archaeal lipids indicates CLs and IPLs in the deep anoxic water column have negligible influence on the sedimentary pool. Archaeol substitutes tetraether lipids as the most abundant IPL in the deep anoxic water column and the lacustrine methanic zone. Its elevated IPL/CL ratios and negative δ13C values indicate active methane metabolism. Sedimentary CL‐ and IPL‐crenarchaeol were exclusively derived from the water column, as indicated by non‐variable δ13C values that are identical to those in the chemocline and by the low BIT (branched isoprenoid tetraether index). By contrast, in situ production accounts on average for 22% of the sedimentary IPL‐GDGT‐0 (glycerol dibiphytanyl glycerol tetraether) based on isotopic mass balance using the fermentation product lactate as an endmember for the dissolved substrate pool. Despite the structural similarity, glycosidic crenarchaeol appears to be more recalcitrant in comparison to its non‐cycloalkylated counterpart GDGT‐0, as indicated by its consistently higher IPL/CL ratio in sediments. The higher TEX86, CCaT, and GDGT‐2/‐3 values in glacial sediments could plausibly result from selective turnover of archaeal lipids and/or an archaeal ecology shift during the transition from the glacial lacustrine to the Holocene marine setting. Our in‐depth molecular‐isotopic examination of archaeal core and intact polar lipids provided new constraints on the sources and fate of archaeal lipids and their applicability in paleoceanographic and biogeochemical studies. New results of the lithological structural–textural observations and petrographic study of rocks of the Uryuk Formation (sandstones and gravelstone-sandstones with the subordinate mudstone interlayers) exposed in the Malyi Tolpar River basin in the Bashkir meganticlinorium. For the first time, a wide development of synsedimentary underwater landslide folds (varying from the first tens of centimeters to the first meters in size) has been established in the Uryuk deposits. The sandstones demonstrate the oblique, wavy, flaser, and horizontal (with paired thin clay lamina) stratification, as well as massive layers. Signs of shallow wave ripples have been established. The rocks are characterized by mechanoglyphs and textures similar to Arumberia banksi, which presumably represent the lithified textures of bacterial mats that existed under shallow-marine environments with sandy–clayey sedimentation. Despite the absence of direct lithological signs of diamictites, the Uryuk deposits likely form a single sedimentary sequence with the underlying Tolparovo–Suirovo marine glacial deposits, in which a shallow-sea sedimentation regime was established by the end of the Uryuk time. It is shown that the presence of ferruginous minerals in the sandstone cement is secondary in nature and is associated with their epigenetic transformations. It is concluded that the red color of rocks of the Uryuk Formation cannot be used for the stratification of its sections and reconstruction of sedimentation conditions in the Uryuk time. A hydrogeological investigation is presented that focused on the development of a drought-resilient groundwater supply for a town (Carlow) in the Irish Midlands. The combination of thick overlying glacial deposits and Carboniferous limestones of low primary permeability posed a challenge to identifying a groundwater source. The source exploration strategy comprised surface geophysics and follow-on pilot well drilling to identify zones of high (secondary) permeability in bedrock. The study identified a previously unrecorded large (c. 3.5 km long) and deep infilled karst feature that possibly extends 2 km further to a nearby area of known Neogene-aged karst infill. Separately, the investigation revealed new areas of dolomitized limestone, suitable for water supply development, where two production wells were constructed. A programme of pumping tests showed that dolomitized limestone areas exhibited low-nitrate groundwater quality, relatively high transmissivity and sustained recharge boundaries (leakage from a nearby riverbed). Analysis of data from the operational stage provided further insights into recharge behaviour, and showed that groundwater levels are resilient during droughts at current abstraction rates. The analysis concluded that the wellfield could sustain higher abstraction volumes, even through extended periods of low effective rainfall. Moraine complexes formed by multiple glaciations are well-preserved in the Mount Geladandong area, the largest center of current glaciation in the Tanggula Mountains in western China. Studies of these glacial landforms provide insights into past glacier changes and contribute to understanding palaeoclimate and palaeoenvironment in the central Tibetan Plateau (TP). Here we report on 10Be surface exposure dating of thirteen rock samples collected from a sequence of glacial landforms associated with the Gangjiaquba Glacier. Based on the dating results, historical records (topographical maps) and morphological relationships, clear Little Ice Age (LIA) landforms are identified, and other landforms are tentatively assigned Neoglacial and global Last Glacial Maximum (LGM G) ages. Dating results for samples from modern glacial landforms demonstrate that the boulders were not affected by nuclide inheritance, and that 10Be surface exposure dating may be used to constrain glacier fluctuations during the past century in high-altitude areas that have high 10Be production rates. A comparison of the ages of a glacially polished surface and adjacent glacial deposits indicates that subglacial erosion by abrasion of the rock surface was insufficient to remove cosmogenic nuclide inventories. Thus the apparent exposure age on the polished surface includes inheritance and over-estimates the actual age for the exposure of this surface. Samples from hummocky moraine have wide age spreads, indicating long-lasting surface instability after deposition of this landform. Successive reduction in glacial extent in the Mount Geladandong area since the LGM G reflects temperature and precipitation changes over this timeframe in the central TP, with climate forcing for glacial advances correlated with cooling signals in the North Atlantic that may have been transmitted to this area by the westerlies. The results of the search for and study of the Late Pleistocene soils in the north of Western Siberia are described. The theoretical basis is an ice-free model of the evolution of Pleistocene landscapes in the region, because the alternative model of its glacial cover excludes the preservation of paleosols. Glacial deposits are absent in this region, and paleosol levels are detectable in the sections of high river terraces exposing the Late and Middle Pleistocene sediments. They correspond to the chronointervals with landscape conditions favorable for pedogenesis; namely, soils of the (1) Kazantsevo thermochron (marine isotope-oxygen stage MIS5 overlying the Middle Pleistocene alluvium), (2) Karginsky interstadial (MIS3), and (3) the end of Sartan cryochron (MIS2). The pedogenetic interpretation of these paleosols is based on morphogenetic analysis, including micromorphological examination. According to this analysis, (i) the stage of taiga soil formation with clay illuviation in the polygenetic profile of MIS5 paleosol was replaced by a colder tundra phase with suprapermafrost gleying; (ii) characteristic of the MIS3 paleosols were tundra-steppe conditions, under which gleying and cryogenesis were combined with the neoformation of carbonates; and (iii) the paleosol level of the end of MIS2 was the result of tundra-swamp pedogenesis and included gleyed pedosediments that filled ice-wedge pseudomorphs. The latter fact allows us to identify the Late Sartan Taz–Nadym cryogenic soil horizon. The results are correlated with synchronous stratigraphic schemes for adjacent regions suggesting the construction of the soil–permafrost paleorecord for the north of Western Siberia. This is important, because the interpretation of the modern surface soils requires special approaches in order to take into account relict pedogenic horizons that are often found in their profiles. Stream periphytons are candidate ecosystem engineers in proglacial margins. Here, we quantify the extent to which they are engineers for the case of hillslope‐fed tributaries in the terrace zones of proglacial margin alluvial plains. Candidate ecosystem engineering effects relate to periphyton‐driven changes in (1) vertical infiltration of water, which in turn could aid plant colonization and hence local surface stabilization, and (2) near‐bed hydraulics, notably near‐bed turbulence properties. We ran two flume experiments in parallel in the proglacial margin of the Otemma glacier (Switzerland), reproducing the environmental conditions found in terrace streams. In both experiments, we followed periphyton development on initially bare sediments for 28 days. Then, whilst the experiment continued undisturbed in one flume, in the second and over a further 26 days, we introduced disturbances in the form of desiccation events. Throughout the entire experiment length, we collected imagery for close‐range SfM‐MVS photogrammetry, data on vertical infiltration, and near‐bed hydraulics. The experiments showed that periphyton development significantly changed the streambed properties. First, periphyton development over the timescale of a few days reduced bed roughness and clogged the benthic interstitial space, reducing water infiltration. These effects were insensitive to the disturbance regime. Second, the changes in streambed roughness modified the near‐bed turbulent structures, and this resulted in a reduction of bursting events and in the modification of the turbulent kinetic energy at the near‐bed layer. The latter, however, appeared to be less important in these environments as compared with the impacts on infiltration. Given the low water retaining capacity of glacial sediments, the observation that periphyton can reduce vertical infiltration explains wider observations of their importance in glacial floodplains where vegetation succession is critically constrained by water availability. The relatively reduced impacts on near‐bed turbulence also contribute to explaining why disturbance in proglacial margin streams remains a key limit on ecological succession. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Worldwide, significant agricultural activities take place where groundwater is used for irrigation and water losses occur due to evaporation. Water loss through evaporation is affected by the soil type, local climate and most likely crop type. Previous studies from arid regions demonstrated the utility of oxygen and hydrogen isotopes in estimating evaporative water loss during return flow back to an aquifer. This study examined the region around Kalamazoo, Michigan, United States, where the soil is formed from glacial sediments and the region experiences a temperate climate. The present study is applicable to agricultural practices in many parts of the world that are in a temperate climate zone. The study area primarily uses centre-pivot systems supplied by wells. Water samples were taken periodically from wells close to centre-pivot irrigation systems. Knowledge of isotope ratios in precipitation, the primary source of groundwater recharge is a prerequisite for this study. The distribution of oxygen and hydrogen in local precipitation, the so-called Local Meteoric Water Line, is available based on several years of measurements. An evaporative model of the isotope data indicates water loss from evaporation to be in the range of 14% and 6%. This is less than what was estimated for arid region zones and is perhaps also due to the well-drained nature of the regional soil which promotes rapid infiltration lowering evaporation. Evaporative loss was greater at wells near cornfields than at wells that supplied other crop types. Little expected correlation between the groundwater isotope data and chloride concentration is attributable to an external input of chloride from road salt used in winter months.
