In December 2009, hunting was banned for a few days in Greece following the decision of the Council of State. The decision was issued when an animal rights organization claimed to the Court that there was no updated evidence about the impact of hunting on wild populations. This case prompted the present study, which focused on examining the hypothetical scenario of the possible impact of a long–term hunting ban on local businesses in rural areas in Greece. We carried out face–to–face interviews with entrepreneurs from the accommodation and food service sectors. Our results showed that most business owners interviewed considered the impact would be significant for their annual earnings. This finding should be taken into account by environmental decision makers because rural and mountainous areas in Greece are sparsely populated, and the few small businesses that still operate would not withstand drastic changes in rural tourism.

A study of earthquake seismicity is undertaken over the areas of Central and South America, the tectonics of which are of great interest. The whole territory is divided into 10 seismic zones based on some seismotectonic characteristics, as in previously published studies. The earthquakes used in the present study are extracted from the catalogs of the International Seismological Center, cover the period of 1900–2021, and are restricted to shallow depths (≤60 km) and a magnitude M≥4.5. Fore- and aftershocks are removed according to Reasenberg’s technique. The paper confines itself to the evaluation of earthquake occurrence probabilities in the seismic zones covering parts of Central and South America, and we implement the hidden Markov model (HMM) and apply the EM algorithm.

Introduction Depression is three to four times more prevalent in autistic people and is related to reduced quality of life. There is a need for empirically supported psychological interventions for depression specifically adapted to meet the needs of autistic adults. ADEPT-2 aims to establish the clinical and cost-effectiveness of an adapted low-intensity psychological intervention (guided self-help) for depression in autistic adults.Methods and analysis A two parallel-group multicentre pragmatic randomised controlled trial investigating the effectiveness of GSH for depression in autistic adults. Participants (n=248) aged ≥18 years with a clinical diagnosis of autism currently experiencing depression will be randomised to GSH or treatment as usual (TAU). GSH is a low-intensity psychological intervention based on the principles of behavioural activation adapted for autism. GSH comprises informational materials for nine individual sessions facilitated online by a GSH coach who has received training and supervision in delivering the intervention. The primary outcome will be Beck Depression Inventory-II depression scores at 16 weeks post randomisation with follow-up measures at 32 and 52 weeks. Additional measures of anxiety, patient-rated global improvement, quality of life, work and social adjustment, positive and negative affect will be measured 16 and 52 weeks post randomisation. The primary health economic analysis will assess the cost-effectiveness of GSH compared with TAU over 52 weeks, from a societal perspective including the National Health Service, personal social services, personal expenses, voluntary services and productivity. An embedded qualitative study will explore the acceptability, experiences and adherence of participants and therapists to treatment principles.Ethics and dissemination This trial has been approved by the East of England - Essex Research Ethics Committee on 10 June 2022 (REC Reference number: 22/EE/0091). The findings of the research will be submitted for publication in peer-reviewed journals and disseminated in an appropriate format to trial participants and the wider public.Trial registration number ISRCTN17547011.

Type I fimbriae are the main adhesive organelles of uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC), consisting of four different subunits. Their component with the most important role in establishing bacterial infections is the FimH adhesin located at the fimbrial tip. This two-domain protein mediates adhesion to host epithelial cells through interaction with terminal mannoses on epithelial glycoproteins. Here, we propose that the amyloidogenic potential of FimH can be exploited for the development of therapeutic agents against Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs). Aggregation-prone regions (APRs) were identified via computational methods, and peptide-analogues corresponding to FimH lectin domain APRs were chemically synthesized and studied with the aid of both biophysical experimental techniques and molecular dynamic simulations. Our findings indicate that these peptide-analogues offer a promising set of antimicrobial candidate molecules since they can either interfere with the folding process of FimH or compete for the mannose-binding pocket.

Dementia caregiving, besides encompassing various challenges in tandem to the diagnosis of the care recipient, is associated with decreased psychological well-being and mental health. Accordingly, caregivers' wellbeing has an impact on the quality of care they provide and on the relationship quality with the person in their care. The aim of the present study is to examine the effectiveness of a mindfulness-based intervention on relational and psychological wellbeing, tailored to the needs of dementia caregivers. This clinical trial (NCT04977245) will apply a randomized controlled mixed method design. Caregivers will be randomly allocated to either the mindfulness intervention or the active control group. The intervention arm is based on experiential learning and is targeted to promote caregivers' well-being and empowerment. Assessments will include, standardized self-report questionnaires, task performance measures, and qualitative measures. All assessments will be held at three time points (baseline; t0, 0 months, post-intervention; t1, 2 months, and after maintenance; t2, 3 months) focused on three core domains (1. relational well-being, 2. psychological well-being, and 3. dementia patient's lifestyle/activities). The primary outcome will be relational well-being, and data will be analyzed using linear mixed modelling.

Background: COVID-19 continues to pose a threat to immunocompromised individuals, even with vaccination. The monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) tixagevimab/cilgavimab (TXG/CIL) provide targeted prophylaxis against SARS-CoV-2 with the benefit of a prolonged half-life. Although approved for COVID-19 prevention, there is limited data on their effectiveness among heavily immunocompromised populations. Methods: We conducted a prospective, observational study at Laiko General Hospital, Athens, Greece, from August to December 2022 to investigate the efficacy of TXG/CIL as a form of pre-exposure prophylaxis in immunocompromised patients. Data on breakthrough SARS-CoV-2 infections were collected over a six-month follow-up period. Results: Of the 375 participants (mean age 61.3 ± 14.1 years; 59.7% male), 76 (20.3%) developed breakthrough SARS-CoV-2 infections, with an incidence of 3.81 cases/100 patient months. Hospitalization was required for 21 patients (5.6%), with a median stay of 14 days. Seven deaths were recorded, with only one attributed to COVID-19. Previous infection (OR 0.46, 95% CI 0.26–0.82) and hybrid immunity (OR 0.52, 95% CI 0.29–0.92) can protect against new infection. Solid organ malignancy significantly increased the risk of severe outcomes among those infected (OR 7.4, 95% CI 2.2–24.7, p = 0.001). Conclusions: TXG/CIL provides effective prophylaxis against COVID-19 in immunocompromised patients. Future strategies should focus on developing new mAb combinations to address emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants and protect vulnerable populations.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common type of head and neck cancer, with a high mortality rate. There is growing evidence supporting a link between oral cancer and the microbiome. The microbiome can impact various aspects of cancer, such as pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. While there is existing information on bacteria and its connection to oral cancer, the fungi residing in the oral cavity represent a significant component of the microbiome that remains in its early stages of exploration and understanding. Fungi comprise a minuscule part of the human microbiome called the mycobiome. Mycobiome is ubiquitous in the human body but a weakened immune system offers a leeway space for fungi to showcase its virulence. The role of mycobiome as a colonizer, facilitator, or driver of carcinogenesis is still ambiguous. Reactivating the mycobiome that undergoes collateral damage associated with cancer treatment can be watershed event in cancer research. The coordinated, virulent, non-virulent behavior of the fungi once they reach a critical density must be hacked, considering its diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic implications in cancer. This review highlights the diversity of the mycobiome and its potential role in oral cancer.

AbstractDrug development for neurological diseases is greatly impeded by the presence of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). We and others previously reported on extravasation of micrometer-sized particles from the cerebral microcirculation – across the BBB – into the brain tissue over the course of several weeks. This mechanism could potentially be used for sustained parenchymal drug delivery after extravasation of biodegradable microspheres. As a first step toward this goal, we set out to evaluate the extravasation potential in the rat brain of three classes of biodegradable microspheres with drug-carrying potential, having a median diameter of 13 µm (80% within 8–18 µm) and polyethylene glycol concentrations of 0%, 24% and 36%. Extravasation, capillary recanalization and tissue damage were determined in a rat cerebral microembolization model at day 14 after microsphere injection. Microspheres of all three classes had the potential to extravasate from the vessel into the brain parenchyma, with microspheres without polyethylene glycol extravasating the fastest. Microembolization with biodegradable microspheres led to impaired local capillary perfusion, which was substantially restored after bead extravasation. We did not observe overt tissue damage after microembolization with any microsphere: we found very limited BBB disruption (IgG extravasation), no microgliosis (Iba1 staining) and no large neuronal infarctions (NeuN staining). In conclusion, biodegradable microspheres with different polymer compositions can extravasate into the brain parenchyma while causing minimal tissue damage.

Introduction: The rise in global tobacco consumption poses severe health risks, particularly for pregnant women, where it exacerbates maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. This issue is especially critical among minority groups like the Roma, who face unique socio-economic and cultural challenges that contribute to higher smoking rates. This study investigates the smoking behaviors of pregnant Roma women and the general population, highlighting the role of midwives in smoking cessation. Methods: The study involved 142 pregnant women, split equally between Roma women from specific regions and their counterparts from the general population of Greece. We conducted data collection in 2023 through multiple site visits, utilizing a comprehensive questionnaire that covered aspects like tobacco use, exposure to passive smoking, and the influence of midwives. We performed statistical analysis using SPSS, focusing on differences between the two groups using Chi-squared tests and linear regression analyses. Results: We noted significant differences in age, education levels, income, living conditions, and smoking statuss between the groups. The Roma participants displayed a higher prevalence of smoking during pregnancy and more significant nicotine dependence, underscoring cultural and socio-economic influences on their smoking behavior. The study also found that Roma women are less likely to have structured healthcare support and more likely to engage midwives in discussions about smoking cessation. Conclusions: The findings emphasize the need for culturally informed healthcare interventions that enhance the training of midwives in smoking cessation techniques. Such approaches are vital for improving health outcomes for pregnant women within marginalized communities like the Roma, where socio-economic and cultural barriers significantly influence health behaviors. Demographic change confronts us with an ever-increasing number of elderly people who face isolation and socialization issues. Background: The main challenge of this study is to inject emotional and aesthetic aspects into the design process of a virtual reality (VR) social space for the elderly. In this context, we asked architects and artists to improve the perception elderly people have of their way of communicating with others. Artists, in collaboration with computer engineers, designed experiences that evoke positive cognitive and emotional feelings and memories by following design trends and aesthetic values likely to be appreciated by older people, which were integrated in VR. Methods: We approached our goal by implementing an innovative art-driven methodology, using a plethora of technologies and methods, such as VR, artificial intelligence algorithms, visual analysis, and 3D mapping, in order to make design decisions based on a detailed understanding of the users’ preferences and collective behavior. Results: A so-called virtual village “Cap de Ballon” was co-created, having a public space inspired by the villages of Santorini and Meteora and a private space inspired by the 3D scanning of an elderly person’s apartment. Conclusions: The overall concept of the VR village‘s utility, design, and interior design were appreciated by the end users and the concept was evaluated as original and stimulating for creativity.

Students around the world demonstrate a limited conceptual understanding of sexual reproduction. A lack of understanding of how the human reproductive system works has been linked with risks such as sexually transmitted diseases and unintended pregnancies. Our focus in this paper is to explore the level of knowledge of reproductive physiology and anatomy among postgraduate students of educational sciences. Administering a questionnaire to 65 educational sciences postgraduate students we traced (a) the level of their knowledge concerning the organs of the male/female reproductive system before and after they were shown pictures of internal/external genitalia and (b) the level of their knowledge concerning the organs where the production of sperm/egg cells and the fertilisation happen. About two-thirds of the students failed to name prostate and external female genitals such as the clitoris and labia, even after detailed pictures were provided to them. Moreover, about one out of five of students appeared to believe that egg cells are produced in the uterus, which -- according to the majority of the students asked -- seems also to be the organ where the fertilisation occurs. Relevant literature and possible implications are discussed.
