Accurate measurement of bedload is challenging, considering its spatial and temporal variability. Various indirect acoustic techniques are often used for estimating the bedload rate and total bedload mass. Estimating the grain size distribution for a bedload event of relatively short duration, taking the smaller bedload particles into account, is difficult. In the current study, an impact plate with two sensors, namely, an accelerometer and a geophone, is tested in a laboratory flume. Available bedload grains are sorted into different grain size classes, and two sets of experiments are conducted. Single-grain/multigrain particles and mixed-grain particles are considered in the single-class and multiclass experiments, respectively. Three different grain mixtures with variable fineness are fed to the plate in the mixed-grain experiment. The present setup can detect bedload grains from 2.36 to about 150 mm, which is an improvement over other indirect methods. A hybrid analysis methodology to predict the grain size distribution using signals from both sensors is developed. The depth of the Los Angeles (LA) basin is a critical factor for seismic hazard assessment and active tectonic studies. By analyzing S‐waves generated by earthquakes below the basin that convert to P‐waves at the sediment‐bedrock interface, we estimate the maximum depth of the LA basin to be 9 km. This estimate depends on the velocities within and below the basin, and the depth presented here is based on the latest community velocity model. To map the basin depth, we use two dense arrays: the Community Seismic Network, a dense network of low‐cost accelerometers in schools across LA region, and a basin‐wide node survey conducted in 2022, consisting of about 300 geophones deployed for a month. Utilizing differential travel times between direct S and Sp converted phases of local earthquakes, we produce a detailed depth map of the LA basin. A three-axis seismic accelerometer was developed and created, containing three uniaxial mutually perpendicular sensors, the sensitivity axis of each sensor is located at an angle of 54.736° to the local gravitational vertical. For the first time, additional magnetic rigidity has been introduced into each device, allowing the device to be finely tuned to the conditions of a particular planet. However, the accumulated experience in conducting ground-based tests has shown the need to improve the uniaxial seismic accelerometer, which can significantly improve the characteristics of the device. First, we use a single material—beryllium bronze BrB-2—for the manufacture of massive test mass suspension elements with a thickness of 1.5 mm and an elastic element made of a thin strip 10–20 microns thick, which reduces the likelihood of instability. Secondly, we reduce the gap in the capacitors of capacitive converters from 0.25 to 0.1–0.15 mm to significantly increase the conversion slope of the capacitive sensor. Thirdly, we change the technology of setting up the device, for which we combine all the elements of the sensitive part of a uniaxial seismogravimeter using special vertical inserts. This allows us to place the device as a whole in a system for its configuration, eliminating the possibility of failure of individual elements, thereby increasing the reliability of the device. With the growing demand for infrastructure and transportation facilities, the need for advanced structural health monitoring (SHM) systems is critical. This study introduces two innovative, cost-effective, standalone, and open-source data acquisition devices designed to enhance SHM through the latest sensing technologies. The first device, termed CEDAS_acc, integrates the ADXL355 MEMS accelerometer with a RaspberryPi mini-computer, ideal for measuring strong ground motions and assessing structural modal properties during forced vibration tests and structural monitoring of mid-rise buildings. The second device, CEDAS_geo, incorporates the SM24 geophone sensor with a Raspberry Pi, designed for weak ground motion measurements, making it suitable for seismograph networks, seismological research, and early warning systems. Both devices function as acceleration/velocity Data Acquisition Systems (DAS) and standalone data loggers, featuring hardware components such as a single-board mini-computer, sensors, Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs), and micro-SD cards housed in protective casings. The CEDAS_acc includes a triaxial MEMS accelerometer with three ADCs, while the CEDAS_geo uses horizontal and vertical geophone elements with an ADC board. To validate these devices, rigorous tests were conducted. Offset Test, conducted by placing the sensor on a leveled flat surface in six orientations, demonstrating the accelerometer's ability to provide accurate measurements using gravity as a reference; Frequency Response Test, performed at the Gebze Technical University Earthquake and Structure Laboratory (GTU-ESL), comparing the devices' responses to the GURALP-5TDE reference sensor, with CEDAS_acc evaluated on a shaking table and CEDAS_geo's performance assessed using ambient vibration records; and Noise Test, executed in a low-noise rural area to determine the intrinsic noise of CEDAS_geo, showing its capability to capture vibrations lower than ambient noise levels. Further field tests were conducted on a 10-story reinforced concrete building in Gaziantep, Turkey, instrumented with 8 CEDAS_acc and 1 CEDAS_geo devices. The building's response to a magnitude 3.2 earthquake and ambient vibrations was analyzed, comparing results to the GURALP-5TDE reference sensors and demonstrating the devices' accuracy in capturing peak accelerations and modal frequencies with minimal deviations. The study also introduced the Record Analyzer (RECANA) web application for managing data analysis on CEDAS devices, supporting various data formats, and providing tools for filtering, calibrating, and exporting data. Shallow sediments can respond non‐linearly to large dynamic strains and undergo a subsequent healing phase as the material gradually recovers following the passing of seismic waves. This study focuses on the physical changes in the subsurface caused by the shaking from a buried chemical explosion detonated in a borehole in Nevada, USA, as a part of the Source Physics Experiment Phase II. The explosion damaged the shallow subsurface and modified the frequency content recorded by 491 geophones and 2240 Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) channels within 2.5 km from surface ground zero. We observe a gradual shift of resonance frequencies in the 10–25 Hz frequency band in the hours following the explosion and develop a method to characterize the related logarithm‐type healing process of the shallow (i.e., upper ∼25 m) subsurface. We find that stronger levels of ground motion increase the relative degree of damage and duration of the subsurface healing; with the spall region exhibiting the largest degree of damage and longest healing recovery time. We observe coherent spatial patterns of damage with the region located to the southeast of the explosion exhibiting more damage than the southwest region. This study demonstrates that both DAS and co‐located geophones capture similar temporal changes associated with the physical processes occurring in the subsurface, with the high‐density sampling of DAS measurements enabling a new capability to monitor the fine‐scale changes of the Earth's shallow subsurface following the detonation of a buried explosion. A healing phase of the sediments generally follows the passing of the seismic waves as the medium gradually recovers with time. We study the spatio‐temporal response of the subsurface in the vicinity of a large buried chemical explosion that was detonated in a borehole at the Nevada National Security Site, USA. The explosion, which was part of the Source Physics Experiment Phase II, was well instrumented along a surface fiber‐optic cable with Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) and hundreds of geophones. We find that the explosion, which generated a spallation of the shallow Earth, primarily damaged the upper ∼25 m of the subsurface. We characterize the healing of the sediments and find a correlation between the duration of the healing phase and the level of maximum shaking. The high density of sensors also allows us to study spatial variations in the response of the shallow subsurface. This study demonstrates that both DAS and geophone continuous data similarly capture the spatio‐temporal variations of the Earth's physical properties following strong ground motions, with DAS enabling meter‐scale measurements of the subsurface changes. Tunnel seismic advance prediction can effectively reduce the construction risk during tunnel excavation. Compared with the 2-D method, the 3-D method is more conducive to describing the spatial characteristics of the geological body by adding the seismic data in the vertical direction. However, some drawbacks still need improvement in the current 3-D tunnel seismic prediction method. (1) The geometry is complex, which is destructiveness, high cost, and time-consuming, and will delay the tunnel construction schedule. (2) Illumination of the anomalous body is insufficient, and the precision of migration imaging is low. (3) Shot points are far away from the tunnel face, the energy loss at the shot points is more serious. (4) The received signals at the tunnel wall have the surface wave with strong energy when the shot points are placed on the tunnel wall. (5) The geometry is not linear, so the directional filtering method cannot be used to extract the reflection wave. To overcome the drawbacks of the current prediction method, a new 3-D symmetrical tunnel seismic prediction method is proposed. Six geophones are installed on the tunnel wall, two on the left side, two on the right side, and two on the top side. Twenty-four shot points are placed on the tunnel face and near both sides of the tunnel wall, twelve shot points on the left side and twelve shot points on the right side. The shot points will move along with the forward excavation of the tunnel. The wavefield analysis, illumination statistics, and 3-D reverse time migration imaging are used to evaluate the proposed method. The result of modeled data indicates that the proposed 3-D geometry has some advantages: (1) the geometry is simple and the geophone installation time is short; (2) it has high illumination energy, wide illumination range, and can improve the prediction distance and imaging accuracy; (3) the proposed 3-D method can better estimate the velocity of surrounding rock and is more conducive to extracting the reflection wave with high resolution. Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) technology repurposes fiber optic cables (FOCs) into seismic arrays, offering unprecedented dense strain/strain-rate measurements. The metre-scale virtual sensor spacing is typically unattainable with standard seismological equipment. Consequently, DAS provides an extraordinary amount of suitable data for seismic monitoring applications. However, intrinsic characteristics of this technology, such as signal axial polarisation, coupling inhomogeneities, or sensitivity to site conditions, can affect seismic phase amplitudes and their coherence, potentially reducing the number of useful measurement points. To gain a deeper understanding on the relative importance of these phenomena, this study analyses 'real data' from various seismic events recorded by shallow-horizontal DAS deployments. Thus, we take advantage of the pool of different array dimensions and geometries to avoid biased observations. We focus on the spatial variability of P-wave amplitudes, signal-to-noise ratios and waveform correlation, ideally mimicking the usage of absolute and differential arrival times for seismological monitoring purposes. We observed significant amplitude variations, which cannot be fully explained by signal polarisation along the FOC. Additionally, waveform correlation often exhibits a complex and faster decay with interchannel distance. These findings suggest the importance of avoiding 'blind' usage of shallow-horizontal DAS arrays and emphasise the need for case-dependent data selection/weighting procedures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) is a relatively new technology for recording the propagation of seismic waves, with promising applications in both engineering and geophysics. DAS's ability to simultaneously collect high spatial resolution waveforms over long arrays suggests that it is well-suited for near-surface imaging applications such as 2-D multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASWs), which require, at a minimum, long, linear arrays of single-component receivers. The 2-D MASW method uses a large number of sensor subarrays deployed along a linear alignment to produce 1-D shear-wave velocity (VS) profiles beneath each subarray. The 1-D VS profiles are then combined to form a pseudo-2-D VS image beneath the entire linear alignment that can be used for the purpose of identifying and characterizing lateral variations in subsurface layering. Traditionally, 2-D MASW is conducted using arrays consisting of either 24 or 48 geophones. While additional receivers could easily be incorporated into the testing configuration, it is rare for researchers and practitioners to have access to greater numbers of seismographs and geophones. When a limited number of geophones are available for deployment, there is a need to pre-determine the geophone spacing and subarray length prior to field data acquisition. Studies examining how the choice of subarray geometry impacts the resulting pseudo-2-D VS cross-sections have been largely limited to synthetic data. In response, this study utilizes DAS data to examine the effects of using various subarray lengths by comparing pseudo-2-D VS cross-sections derived from active-source waveforms collected at a well-characterized field site. DAS is particularly useful for 2-D MASW applications because the subarray geometry does not need to be determined prior to field data acquisition. We organize the DAS waveforms into multiple sets of overlapping MASW subarrays of differing lengths, ranging from 11 to 47 m, along the same alignment, allowing for direct comparison of the derived pseudo-2-D VS results at the site. We show that the length of the individual MASW subarrays has a significant effect on the resulting VS cross-sections, including the resolved location of a strong impedance contrasts at our study site, and evaluate the results relative to ground truth from invasive testing. Our results suggest that the choice of subarray length is important and should be carefully chosen to meet project-specific goals. Furthermore, analysts may consider using multiple subarray geometries during the data processing stage, as is made possible by DAS, to properly evaluate the uncertainty of 2-D MASW results. This study demonstrates the potential of using DAS to collect data for 2-D MASW in a manner that is efficient and flexible, and can be easily scaled up for use with very long arrays. Marine vibrators represent an alternative seismic source technology that could come to market in the near future. A key challenge related to marine vibrator seismic data is the effect that phase dispersion from source motion has on the signal during transmission. As such, the recorded moving vibrator data will benefit from being phase corrected, so that the data appear as if they had been shot with a stationary source. This transformation is called the source motion correction. Previous source motion corrections used either specific dephasing operators for specific sweep types or pre‐correlation methods for any sweep type. A source motion correction dephasing operator has been derived, demonstrated and applied to real seismic data collected during a Marine Vibrator Joint Industry Project field trial of an array of marine vibrators. This dephasing operator has been made more general so that any strictly monotonic sweep through time may be used for this correction regardless of sweep type (e.g. linear or exponential). Moreover, the correction uses the pilot sweep as a direct input, measuring from it, the instantaneous frequency which can then be used to build the dephasing operator. This new more general form brings two key advantages over previous dephasing operator corrections: (1) Non‐analytically defined sweeps can now be source motion corrected, and (2) even when an analytically defined sweep (e.g. linear) is used, the transmitted sweep from the marine vibrator can vary from the theoretical input sweep; this correction can account for these changes. Furthermore, given that this source motion correction is a dephasing operator, it can be applied pre‐ or post‐correlation of the raw data with the pilot sweep, thus allowing greater flexibility in the processing. Lastly, some previously derived source motion corrections based on dephasing operators contained errors in their derivation; this new derivation addresses these errors resulting in an improved correction. Seismic surface and body wave analyses are powerful tools for the geotechnical characterization of sites. The use of landstreamers facilitates the acquisition of dense data sets over large areas. However, efficient processing workflows are needed to estimate 3D velocity models from these massive data sets. For surface wave analysis, the manual picking of dispersion curves (DCs) of large data sets is very time-consuming, whereas the accuracy can be biased by operator choices. We apply a semi-automatic workflow for the analysis, processing, and interpretation of a large-scale landstreamer data set acquired for engineering purposes in the Middle East. The workflow involves the application of a validated automatic DC picking algorithm, and the transformation of the DCs into S- and P-wave velocity models through the wavelength-depth technique. The method has a high level of automation, is data driven and does not require extensive data inversion. Another remarkable benefit is that the auto-picking is more than 1,000 times more efficient than standard manual picking and the estimated velocities are in good agreement with available geotechnical and geophysical information. We conclude that the semi-automatic approach may represent a fast and straightforward method suitable for both research and industrial projects, thus enhancing further collaborations and developments. Seismic methods are extensively used in coal mining for expanding resource discoveries and definition as well as for mine monitoring. However, the use of borehole seismic methods is relatively uncommon due to the high cost of borehole seismic acquisition using conventional downhole tools. The introduction of distributed acoustic sensing (DAS), which uses optical fibres to record seismic data, has dramatically increased the cost-effectiveness of borehole seismic methods. Fibre-optic cables are inexpensive and, once deployed in a borehole, can be abandoned or used later for further monitoring of the subsurface. The case study presented here concerns the use of DAS to record a 3D VSP (vertical seismic profiling) for coal seam exploration in Queensland, Australia. This study trialled effective strategies for deploying cables into boreholes and demonstrated how this technology could be incorporated into the standard coal exploration process. The final processing results produced a high-resolution 3D seismic cube where the coal seams below the basalt cover are clearly identifiable around the boreholes. Permanent installation of the fibre-optic cables into a set of boreholes provides immediate benefits of 3D seismic imaging and can create additional value in utilising these sensors for further discrete or continuous subsurface measurements, including stability monitoring of underground workings and detection of methane accumulations. Evaluating the physical mechanisms that link hydraulic fracturing (HF) operations to induced earthquakes and the anticipated form of the resulting events is significant in informing subsurface fluid injection operations. Current understanding supports the overriding role of the effective stress magnitude in triggering earthquakes, while the impact of change rate of effective stress has not been systematically addressed. In this work, a modified critical stiffness was brought up to investigate the likelihood, impact, and mitigation of induced seismicity during and after hydraulic fracturing by developing a poroelastic model based on rate-and-state fraction law and linear stability analysis. In the new criterion, the change rate of effective stress was considered a key variable to explore the evolution of this criterion and hence the likelihood of instability slip of fault. A coupled fluid flowedeformation model was used to represent the entire hydraulic fracturing process in COMSOL Multiphysics. The possibility of triggering an earthquake throughout the entire hydraulic fracturing process, from fracturing to cessation, was investigated considering different fault locations, orientations, and positions along the fault. The competition between the effects of the magnitude and change rate of effective stress was notable at each fracturing stage. The effective stress magnitude is a significant controlling factor during fracturing events, with the change rate dominating when fracturing is suddenly started or stopped. Instability dominates when the magnitude of the effective stress increases (constant injection at each fracturing stage) and the change rate of effective stress decreases (the injection process is suddenly stopped). Fracturing with a high injection rate, a fault adjacent to the hydraulic fracturing location and the position of the junction between the reservoir and fault are important to reduce the Coulomb failure stress (CFS) and enhance the critical stiffness as the significant disturbance of stresses at these positions in the coupled process. Therefore, notable attention should be given to the injection rate during fracturing, fault position, and position along faults as important considerations to help reduce the potential for induced seismicity. Our model was verified and confirmed using the case of the Longmaxi Formation in the Sichuan Basin, China, in which the reported microseismic data were correlated with high critical stiffness values. Purpose: The purpose of the designed MEMS dual axis accelerometer is to act as a seismic sensor by measuring low-level vibration at low frequencies, usually including those below 1 Hz. Piezoelectric materials have demonstrated broad applicability in numerous devices and electronic applications. Since piezoelectric energy harvesting devices create their highest power at the resonance frequency, there is a strong relationship between frequency and power density, where ω is the fundamental vibration mode frequency, the potential output power is proportional to 1/ω. Methods: A dual-axis MEMS piezoelectric accelerometer for low-frequency seismic sensing was modelled and simulated with different suspension systems. For a bandwidth range of 1 KHz, COMSOL Multiphysics has been used to simulate the accelerometer supported by a U beam, Parallel beam, folded beam, and Swastik structures. The dual detection of acceleration in the X–Y direction and the ability to produce voltage was detected in all four variations of MEMS accelerometers. Results: The dual detection of acceleration in the X–Y direction and the ability to produce voltage was detected in all four variations of MEMS accelerometers. Based on the investigation, it has been found that the Swastik design produces the highest stress overall, with a value of 0.4 × 105 N/m2 and has a maximum sensitivity of 0.8 × 10-3 Volts/g, making it more suited for seismic sensing applications. Conclusion: The proposed dual-axis MEMS piezoelectric accelerometer with the Swastik suspension system can be used as a seismic sensor to detect low-frequency seismic signals, particularly P-waves. The findings of this paper can be applied in the development of new and improved MEMS accelerometers for various applications, such as vibration sensing, structural health monitoring, and seismic sensing. The imaging of shallow subsurface structures, weathered rock thickness and velocity propagation distribution of the rocks can be identified by seismic refraction. This method is one of the geophysical exploration methods utilizing refracted wave once it reaches the boundary of subsurface layer. In this research we used the generalized reciprocal method (GRM) as one of the robust processing methods in analyzing subsurface data. This method was chosen due to its accuracy in interpreting shallow subsurface layer with highly undulating refractors by determining time velocity analysis, XY optimum distances, and time depth analysis, then, the expected depth values can be achieved. The acquisition of data for this research was conducted using 13 geophones with forward and reverse sources, the data were then picked to get travel time values and inverted to obtain real geological setting of the earth. The results were interpreted as 2 layers, the first layer had a velocity distribution of 499.289 m/s which was identified as a weathered layer with a thickness of about 4.74 meters, whereas the second layer was interpreted as clay rock with velocity distribution of 1270.433 m/s with the thickness reached up to 16 meters. Earthquake-induced plane failure is typically generated on bedding rock slopes. This failure mode has been widely observed in the past earthquakes in Western China (e.g., Wenchuan earthquake). Among them, the multi-slip plane failure may occur with the presence of multiple bedding planes or internal discontinuities within the slopes. This study developed an extended Newmark sliding block model to investigate the multi-slip seismic displacements of the bedding rock slopes. The unified formulation is presented for seismic sliding analysis of bedding rock slopes with arbitrary numbers and inclinations of bedding planes. Both horizontal and vertical earthquake ground motions and the possible amplifications that may result from site and topographic effects are considered. The developed model is validated by the results from shaking table test. The multi-slip mechanism and the effects of dip angle of bedding planes and vertical ground motion are investigated. The results show that (1) the multi-slip failure evolution is different to that identified from the traditional method, indicating the significant interactions among the seismic sliding behavior associated with bedding planes. (2) The influence of the vertical component of ground motion on the multi-sliding displacement is within a range of 20%. (3) The dip angle of sliding planes has a large effect on the sliding displacement, even if the yield coefficient remains the same. Finally, the proposed method is used to evaluate the seismic displacement and performance of the Liujiawan landslide that was triggered in Wenchuan earthquake. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Active seismic surveys are routinely employed by academia to study geological structure of the crust and upper mantle. Wavefields generated during these surveys are sampled at the receiver locations, but the wave‐paths traveled from a source to a sensor remains unknown. Although seismic acquisition layouts designed to investigate complex crustal‐scale environments are often two‐dimensional, the seismogram recorded at the receiver location represents information gathered along the three‐dimensional wavepaths that might offset from the 2D source/receiver profile along its transverse direction. This so‐called 3D‐effect distorts the results of 2D seismic imaging, which is unable to handle the out‐of‐plane propagation. Despite the numerous 2D seismic imaging case studies, the assessment of this issue is often overlooked. However, the problem exists ‐ especially for crustal‐scale profiles, where seismic energy propagates over distances of hundreds of kilometers and probes different crustal units. In this work we investigate the impact of 3D‐effect on the results of 2D velocity model building from the academic ocean‐bottom seismometer data. We show with polarization analysis how the 3D‐effect can manifest itself in the data domain. Using various scenarios of acquisition we evaluate the imprint of the out‐of‐plane propagation on the data and the results of full‐waveform inversion. We show that 2D velocity model building from the seismic profiles acquired in the complex geological setting can lead to wrong solution. Looking for the remedy to this issue we couple different configurations of acquisition geometries with 3D full‐waveform inversion that allow to handle the 3D effect and provide correct model reconstruction. We demonstrate how this issue can manifest itself in the data domain and how it can be solved by changing the approach to the crustal‐scale seismic acquisition from 2D to 3D. We show that 3D velocity model building at wavelet resolution from academic seismic data is possible nowadays with available computing power and efficient source codes. Through this work we want to promote this kind of seismic data acquisition and processing for better and less uncertain reconstructions of the key crustal‐scale geological settings that shape our planet. The long-distance detection of the presence of elephants is pivotal to addressing the human-elephant conflict. IoT-based solutions utilizing seismic signals originating from the movement of elephants are a novel approach to solving this problem. This study introduces an instrumentation system comprising a specially designed geophone-sensor interface for non-invasive, long-range elephant detection using seismic waves while minimizing the vulnerability of seismic signals to noise. The geophone-sensor interface involves a cascade array of an instrumentation amplifier, a second-order Butterworth filter for signal filtering, and a signal amplifier. The introduced geophone-sensor interface was tested under laboratory conditions, and then real-world experiments were carried out for tamed, partly tamed, and untamed elephants. The experimental results reveal that the system remains stable within the tested frequency range from 1 Hz to 1 kHz and the temperature range of 10° C to 40° C. The system successfully captured the seismic signals generated by the footfalls of elephants within a maximum detection range of 155.6 m, with an overall detection accuracy of 99.5%.

The conventional technique for positioning seafloor geophones in ocean bottom seismic exploration encounters several challenges, including the significant impact of outliers on positioning results, underutilization of high-precision observations, and low efficiency in real-time data processing. These issues inevitably affect the quality of seismic exploration outcomes. To address these challenges and enhance the accuracy of geophone positioning, this paper proposes a rigorous real-time acoustic positioning method for geophones based on sequential adjustment and Baarda's outlier detection approach. The proposed method comprises three key steps: grouping the original acoustic observations, constructing the intra-group acoustic positioning model, and synthesizing the positioning results across the different groups. The validity and practicality of this approach are confirmed through a simulation experiment as well as the field experiment conducted in the Bohai Sea, China. The results demonstrate that the proposed method effectively eliminates outliers in the original observations and maximizes the utilization of high-quality observations. Compared to traditional acoustic positioning methods, it significantly reduces positioning errors from meters to decimeters, and in some cases can achieve centimeter-level precision. When the sound velocity profile in the operating sea area is measured, the method can attain the posterior standard deviation at the millimeter level and positioning errors within 10 cm. The unconsolidated near surface and large, daily temperature variations in the desert environment degrade the vertical seismic profiling (VSP) data, posing the need for rigorous quality control. Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) VSP data are often benchmarked using geophone surveys as a gold standard. This study showcases a new simulation-based way to assess the quality of DAS VSP acquired in the desert without geophone data. The depth uncertainty of the DAS channels in the wellbore is assessed by calibrating against formation depth based on the concept of conservation of the energy flux. Using the 1D velocity model derived from checkshot data, we simulate both DAS and geophone VSP data via an elastic pseudo-spectral finite difference method, and estimate the source and receiver signatures using matching filters. These field geophone data show high amplitude variations between channels that cannot be replicated in the simulation. In contrast, the DAS simulation shows a high visual similarity with the field DAS first arrival waveforms. The simulated source and receiver signatures are visually indistinguishable from the field DAS data in this study. Since under perfect conditions, the receiver signatures should be invariant with depth, we propose a new DAS data quality control metric based on local variations of the receiver signatures which does not require geophone measurements. Microseismic monitoring has been used in geo-energy related activities, such as shale-gas exploitation, mining, deep geothermal exploitation, geotechnical and structural engineering, for detecting and locating fractures, rock failures and micro-earthquakes. The success of microseismic monitoring depends on reliable detection and location of the recorded microseismicity. Multichannel coherence migration (MCM) is a detection and location waveform migration-based approach which does not require phase picking, identification and association and performs well on noisy data. Its caveat is a high computational cost, which impedes its application of MCM on large data sets or for real-time monitoring. To address this issue, we propose an improved approach, the multichannel coherence migration grid search (MCMgs), by introducing an adaptive grid optimization technique. Based on results from synthetic and real data, we show that MCMgs reduces the computation time up to 64 times. In addition, MCMgs generates multiple maximum coherence values with various grid sizes instead of a single (maximum) coherence value that links to a single gridpoint and size, thus resulting in more accurate locations. Our simulation results on different deployment geometries demonstrate that MCMgs is effective even with a small number of recordings available—a minimum of seven. We conduct a sensitivity analysis to assess how the detectability of events is affected by the spatial arrangement of the deployed monitoring array. If a limited number of seismometers are available for deployment, our analysis favours a patch array deployment geometry. We show that 12 seismometers deployed at a patch array geometry can have similar detection and localization capability as a large rectangular array of more than 100 seismometers but at a much lower computational and deployment cost. Full‐waveform inversion of multicomponent data can provide an improved estimation of medium parameters using both compressional‐ and shear‐wave information. However, most earlier studies that involved a full‐waveform inversion of ocean‐bottom data are based on acoustic anisotropic or elastic isotropic approximations. Here, we consider realistic elastic anisotropic media and develop an efficient full‐waveform inversion framework for estimating model parameters. We simulate seismic wavefields using a previously developed coupled acoustic/elastic wave propagator that implements a mimetic finite‐difference method with fully staggered grids to accurately handle the fluid/solid boundary conditions. The algorithm employs a multiscale approach starting from low frequencies and incorporating higher frequency bands in the later inversion stages. We analyse the influence of different types of input data on the accuracy of the inverted anisotropy parameters for hard and soft water bottoms. The employed misfit function incorporates information from both hydrophones and ocean‐bottom geophones. Numerical examples indicate that injecting multiple data components simultaneously increases the complexity of the objective function and often degrades the quality of the estimated medium parameters. Thus, we propose a sequential strategy using a single data component at a time. Pressure (hydrophone) data alone can provide satisfactory results if long offsets (i.e., with the offset/depth ratio ≥ 3) are available. Adding the horizontal particle‐displacement or ‐velocity components increases the accuracy of the estimated shear‐wave vertical velocity (VS0$V_{\text{S0}}$) and P‐wave normal‐moveout (Vnmo, P$V_{\text{nmo, P}}$) velocity, especially for strongly heterogeneous sub‐water‐bottom models. The oscillatory bubble pulses generated by airguns in seawater are known to produce artefacts in seismic images. Although such artefacts are suppressible by employing larger airgun arrays in acquisition, small airgun arrays are used more often now to minimize the environmental impacts, thus raising the need for further suppressing bubble pulses at data processing stage. For a deep marine reflection dataset recently acquired by a small airgun array, we compare the effectiveness of three popular debubbling methods that estimate the far‐field source signature based on theoretical simulation and wavelets extracted from seafloor reflections and direct arrivals, respectively. In this case, due to the lack of near‐field measurements for calibration, the debubbling via simulation underperforms the two wavelet extraction methods. Overlapping events in the noisy response of seafloor sediments lead to the failure of the wavelet extraction from primary seafloor reflections. The estimated source signature based on direct arrivals achieves the best bubble suppression result, indicating the importance of signal‐to‐noise ratio and a low level of directionality of the small airgun array source. We have developed a portable active seismic source (PASS) to monitor CO2 storage reservoirs at a depth of approximately 1 km. Despite its small size, stacking the signals generated by the PASS improves the signal‐to‐noise ratio of the seismometer data far from the source. The smaller size and lower cost of the PASS enables its permanent deployment in many locations to continuously monitor CO2 storage reservoirs. To achieve continuous monitoring, distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) is also a vital technology. Based on DAS, we can continuously record the signal from the PASS in an extensive area, including within boreholes and offshore fields. Here we report application of the PASS for the borehole DAS system. We confirmed the PASS signal propagation to a depth of ∼1 km when we used a PASS with 630N at 50 Hz close to the wellhead and recorded the signal by the borehole fiber optic cable. The ability of the system to propagate the PASS signal to a depth of ∼1 km enables continuous monitoring of most CO2 storage reservoirs with high temporal resolution. A major aim in the study of crustal fluids is the development of automatic methodologies for monitoring deep‐source, non‐volcanic gas emissions' spatio‐temporal evolution. Crustal fluids play a significant role in the generation of large earthquakes and the characterization of their emissions on the surface can be essential for better understanding crustal processes generating earthquakes. We investigate seismic tremors recorded over 4 days in 2019 at the Mefite d'Ansanto (southern Apennines, Italy) that is located at the northern end of the fault system that generated the Mw 6.9 1980 Irpinia Earthquake. The Mefite d'Ansanto is hypothesized to be the largest natural, non‐volcanic, CO2‐rich gas emission on Earth. The seismic tremor is studied by employing a dense temporary seismic network and an automated detection algorithm based on non‐parametric statistics of the recorded signal amplitudes. We extracted signal characteristics (RMS amplitude and statistical moments of amplitudes both in time and frequency domains) for use in the subsequent supervised machine‐learning classification of the target tremor and accidently detected anthropogenic and background noise. The data set is used for the training and optimization of station‐based KNN (k‐Nearest‐Neighbors) binary classifiers obtaining good classification performances with a median overall accuracy across all stations of 92.8%. The classified tremor displayed common features at all stations: variable duration (16 s to 30–40 min), broad peak frequency (4–20 Hz) with varying amplitudes, and two types of signals: (a) long‐duration, high‐amplitude tremor and (b) pulsating tremor. Higher tremor amplitudes recorded at stations closer to local bubbling and pressurized vents suggest multiple local tremor sources. Improving the exploration of deep‐seated mineral deposits and assessing the stability of the mine pillars require that geophysical techniques are deployed in a fast and cost‐effective manner with minimal environmental impact. This research presents results from in‐mine reflection seismic experiments and a ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey conducted at the Maseve platinum mine, South Africa. The research aims to develop and implement methods to image platinum group metal (PGM) deposits and geological structures near mine tunnels and assess the stability of pillars. The seismic experiments were conducted using a sledgehammer source (10 lb), conventional cabled geophones (14 Hz), and a landstreamer with 4.5 Hz vertical component geophones. The GPR survey was conducted using a Noggin 500 GPR system with 500 MHz centre frequency. An image of the underlying orebody and geological structures down to 100 m from the mine tunnel floor (∼500 m below ground surface) was produced. We correlated the coherent reflections beneath the tunnel floor with a known Upper Group (UG2) PGM orebody. The final seismic section shows that the UG2 mineralisation is dissected by near‐vertical dykes, faults and fractures. These structures, faults in particular, are interpreted to have been active post‐mineralisation, implying that they may have contributed to the current complex geometry of the deposit. Four GPR profiles were collected around a stability pillar adjacent to the seismic lines. The radargram sections were processed to improve the signal‐to‐noise ratio (S/N). The results show different patterns of fracturing and stress‐induced structures. These fractures were shown to be sub‐vertical and, possibly, constitute complex micro‐structures within the pillar, which could compromise the pillar stability and integrity. Over the past several years, the use of optical fibre cables as ground motion sensors has become a central topic for seismologists, with successful applications of distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) in various key fields such as seismic monitoring, structural imaging and source characterization. DAS response is a combination of both instrument response and cable-ground coupling, with the latter having a strong, spatially variable, but yet largely unquantified effect. This limits the application of a large number of staple seismological techniques (e.g. earthquake magnitude estimation, waveform tomography) that can require accurate knowledge of a signal's amplitude and frequency content. Here we present a method for accurately simulating a DAS cable and its ground coupling. The scheme is based on molecular dynamic-like particle-based numerical modelling, allowing the investigation of the effect of varying DAS-ground coupling scenarios. We start by computing the full strain field directly, for each pair of neighbouring particles in the model. We then define a virtual DAS cable, embedded within the model and formed by a single string of interconnected particles. This allows us to control all aspects of the cable-ground coupling and their properties at an effective granular level through changing the bond stiffness and bond types (e.g. non-linearity) for both the cable and the surrounding medium. Arbitrary cable geometries and heterogeneous materials can be accommodated at the desired scale of investigation. We observe that at the meter scale, the cable-ground coupling and local site effects can substantially alter the recorded signal. We find that the stiffness of the thin layer of material to which the cable is coupled has the strongest effects, selectively amplifying portions of the wave train and contributing to substantial phase delays. These differences show that cable coupling and local site effects should be considered both when designing a DAS deployment and analysing its data when either true or along-cable relative amplitudes and/or frequencies are considered. Based on measurements with the Swiss plate geophone system with a 1 min temporal resolution, bedload transport fluctuations were analysed as a function of the flow and transport conditions in the Swiss Erlenbach stream. The study confirms a finding from an earlier event-based analysis of the same bedload transport data, which showed that the disequilibrium ratio of measured to calculated transport rate (disequilibrium condition) influences the sediment transport behaviour. To analyse the transport conditions, the following elements were examined to characterise bedload transport fluctuations: (i) the autocorrelation coefficient of bedload transport rates as a function of lag time (memory effect), (ii) the critical discharge at the start and end of a transport event, (iii) the variability in the bedload transport rates, and (iv) a hysteresis index as a measure of the strength of bedload transport during the rising and falling limb of the hydrograph. This study underlines that above-average disequilibrium conditions, which are associated with a larger sediment availability on the streambed, generally have a stronger effect on subsequent transport conditions than below-average disequilibrium conditions, which are associated with comparatively less sediment availability on the streambed. The findings highlight the important roles of the sediment availability on the streambed, the disequilibrium ratio, and the hydraulic forcing in view of a better understanding of the bedload transport fluctuations in a steep mountain stream. With the widespread use of Internet of Things (IoT) technology in daily life and the considerable safety risks of falls for elderly individuals, research on IoT-based fall detection systems has gainedmuch attention. This paper proposes an IoT-based spatiotemporal data processing framework based on a depthwise separable convolution generative adversarial network using skip-connection (Skip-DSCGAN) for fall detection. The method uses spatiotemporal data from accelerometers and gyroscopes in inertial sensors as input data. A semisupervised learning approach is adopted to train the model using only activities of daily living (ADL) data, which can avoid data imbalance problems. Furthermore, a quantile-basedapproachis employedtodetermine the fall threshold,whichmakes the fall detection frameworkmore robust. This proposed fall detection framework is evaluated against four other generative adversarial network (GAN) models with superior anomaly detection performance using two fall public datasets (SisFall & MobiAct). The test results show that the proposed method achieves better results, reaching 96.93% and 92.75% accuracy on the above two test datasets, respectively. At the same time, the proposed method also achieves satisfactory results in terms of model size and inference delay time, making it suitable for deployment on wearable devices with limited resources. In addition, this paper also compares GAN-based semisupervised learning methods with supervised learning methods commonly used in fall detection. The article presents the results of a detailed spatiotemporal comparative analysis of the data obtained by platform and bottom inclinometers at the V. Filanovsky field. The slope spectra obtained by the platform inclinometers fundamentally do not coincide with the data of the bottom sensors. It turned out that platform inclinometers effectively detect exogenic deformation effects and hardly identify deformations of the seabed associated with field development processes. Using the geomechanical poroelastic inclusion model, the authors mathematically modeled the spatial distribution of the seabed slopes during a period of intensive water injection into the developed reservoir. The proposed model shows that only the system of bottom inclinometers is a geodynamic monitoring element. It is concluded that sensor systems installed only on the platforms themselves (accelerometers, inclinometers, GNSS) do not pertain to geodynamic monitoring systems (geodynamic survey areas) and cannot ensure safe and rational subsurface use. The compressive sensing (CS) framework offers a cost-effective alternative to dense alias-free sampling. Designing seismic layouts based on the CS technique imposes the use of specific sampling patterns in addition to the logistical and geophysical requirements. We propose a two-step design process for generating CS-based schemes suitable for seismic applications. During the first step, uniform random sampling is used to generate a random scheme, which is supported theoretically by the restricted isometry property. Following that, designated samples are added to the random scheme to control the maximum distance between adjacent sources (or receivers). The null space property theoretically justifies the additional samples of the second step. Our sampling method generates sampling patterns with a CS theoretical background, controlled distance between adjacent samples, and a flexible number of active and omitted samples. The robustness of two-step sampling schemes for reallocated samples is investigated and CS reconstruction tests are performed. In addition, using this approach, a CS-based 3D seismic survey is designed, and the distributions of traces in fold maps and rose diagrams are analyzed. High spatial and temporal resolution hydrographic data collected by Southern Elephant Seals (Mirounga leonina, SESs) and satellite remote sensing data allow a detailed oceanographic description of the Argentine Continental Shelf (ACS). In-situ data were obtained from the CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, and Depth), accelerometer, and hydrophone sensors attached to five SESs that crossed the ACS between the 17th and 31st of October 2019. The analysis of the temperature (T) and salinity (S) along the trajectories allowed us to identify two different regions: north and south of 42°S. Satellite Sea Surface Temperature (SST) data suggests that north of 42°S, warm waters are coming from the San Matias Gulf (SMG). The high spatio-temporal resolution of the in-situ data shows regions with intense gradients along the T and S sections that were associated with a seasonal front that develops north of Península Valdés in winter due to the entrance of cold and fresh water to the SMG. The speed of the SESs is correlated with tidal currents in the coastal portion of the northern region, which is in good agreement with the macrotidal regime observed. A large number of Prey Catch Attempts (PCA), a measure obtained from the accelerometer sensor, indicates that SESs also feed in this region, contradicting suggestions from previous works. The analysis of wind intensity estimated from acoustic sensors allowed us to rule out the local wind as the cause of fast thermocline breakups observed along the SESs trajectories. The crustal structure in south‐central Alaska has been influenced by terrane accretion, flat slab subduction, and a modern strike‐slip fault system. Within the active subduction system, the presence of the Denali Volcanic Gap (DVG), a ∼400 km region separating the active volcanism of the Aleutian Arc to the west and the Wrangell volcanoes to the east, remains enigmatic. To better understand the regional tectonics and the nature of the volcanic gap, we deployed a month‐long north‐south linear geophone array of 306 stations with an interstation distance of 1 km across the Alaska Range. By calculating multi‐component noise cross‐correlation and jointly inverting Rayleigh wave phase velocity and ellipticity across the array, we construct a 2‐D shear wave velocity model along the transect down to ∼16 km depth. In the shallow crust, we observe low‐velocity structures associated with sedimentary basins and image the Denali fault as a narrow localized low‐velocity anomaly extending to at least 12 km depth. About 12 km, below the fold and thrust fault system in the northern flank of the Alaska Range, we observe a prominent low‐velocity zone with more than 15% velocity reduction. Our velocity model is consistent with known geological features and reveals a previously unknown low‐velocity zone that we interpret as a magmatic feature. Based on this feature's spatial relationship to the Buzzard Creek and Jumbo Dome volcanoes and the location above the subducting Pacific Plate, we interpret the low‐velocity zone as a previously unknown subduction‐related crustal magma reservoir located beneath the DVG. Plain Language Summary: The Alaska Range in south‐central Alaska has been shaped by different geological processes. One puzzling aspect is the Denali Volcanic Gap, a region of about 400 km between the Aleutian Arc and the Wrangell volcanoes. To understand this volcanic gap and regional tectonics better, we obtained a 2‐D model of shear wave velocity down to a depth of about 16 km, using a month‐long linear geophone array with over 300 stations placed at 1 km intervals across the Alaska Range. In the shallow crust, we found areas with low‐velocity associated with sedimentary basins. We observe a narrow anomaly related to the Denali fault with low‐velocity extending to at least 12 km depth. About 12 km below the northern flank of the Alaska Range, we discovered a significant zone with low seismic velocities. This zone is believed to be related to magma and is located above the subducting Pacific Plate. We interpreted the anomaly as a magma reservoir beneath the volcanic gap, based on its tectonic and spatial relationship with nearby volcanoes. The greenstone belts of the Crixás-Goiás Domain are economically important due to significant epigenetic gold deposits and the potential for under-researched syngenetic deposits. The gold occurrences associated with the volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits in the region are documented only in the volcanoclastic rocks of the Digo-Digo Formation, Serra de Santa Rita greenstone belt. The objective of this work is to discuss the efficiency of the induced polarization methods in the time and frequency domains for differentiating and identifying potentially mineralized zones in the exhalites associated with the VMS-type gold of the Digo-Digo Formation. Data were acquired using a multielectrode resistivity meter with the dipole–dipole array and 10 m spacing between electrodes, as well as different current injection times (250, 1000, and 2000 ms). After the electrical data processing and inversion, the sections were integrated into ternary red-green-blue and cyan-magenta-yellow models to highlight areas of high chargeability, low resistivity, and high metal factor (frequency domain) and, thus, map the higher potential zones to host polarizable metallic minerals. The geological–geophysical model elaborated from the correlation of electrical and surface geological data allowed us to identify four anomalous areas related to potential mineralized zones. The geological data confirm that two targets are associated with the geological contacts between metamafic and intermediate metavolcanic units and the exhalative horizon. One of the targets coincides with a sulfide-rich exhalative horizon (VMS), while the last target occurs in the occurrence area of metaultramafic rocks, where gold mineralization occurrences have not been previously described, being a promising target for future investigations. The assessment of asymmetric slab behaviour is out of reach in standard Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) tests, because deflections are measured along the driving direction only. Herein, a new T-shaped arrangement of the geophones is proposed. It allows for rapid quantification of asymmetric slab behaviour in central FWD testing of concrete slabs. One geophone is positioned at the centre of impact (= centre of the slab), six along the driving direction, one right and one left of the centre. The 'Lateral Asymmetry Index (LASIX)' is introduced as a corresponding dimensionless deflection basin parameter. Its value increases with increasing asymmetric behaviour of the slab. The main research challenge tackled herein is to optimise the radial distance of the lateral geophones from the centre of the slab, such as to maximise the expressiveness of LASIX for the quantification of asymmetric slab behaviour. In this context, FWD tests with measurement of deflections in eight different directions are carried out, and the 'effective asymmetry index (${\cal A}_{28}$ A 28 )' is introduced as another new dimensionless deflection basin parameter. It summarises the asymmetric behaviour based on deflection differences quantified for all 28 pairs of directions which can be combined out of the eight available measurement directions. The optimal radial distance of the lateral geophones from the centre of the slab is found as 1.20 m. Corresponding values of LASIX larger than $8\percnt$ 8 % refer to coefficients of directional variation of the AREA7 parameter larger than 5%. This indicates directional degradation of the pavement structure resulting from eccentric traffic loads. T-shaped FWD testing requires in situ efforts equivalent to those of standard testing, while allowing for a rapid and reliable quantification of asymmetric behaviour. To obtain better frequency bands for source bearing estimation, experiments using an ice-mounted geophone were performed at three sites on the Arctic ice cap. By transforming to the frequency domain, errors of the bearing estimation in a number of frequency bands within 1000 Hz and the horizontal peak displacements received by the geophone in the corresponding frequency bands were obtained. After comparing the variation in errors to the peak displacements in the same frequency band, it was found that the errors are related to the peak displacements, and higher peak displacement values mean smaller errors. When the incident angle of the acoustic source and the ice thickness meet certain conditions, some modes of the Lamb waves of the ice plate are excited, the peak displacements in the same frequency band are increased, the errors of bearing estimation are reduced, and the effective frequency band for bearing estimation is broadened. Real-time monitoring of rock stability during the mining process is critical. This paper first proposed a RIME algorithm (CCRIME) based on vertical and horizontal crossover search strategies to improve the quality of the solutions obtained by the RIME algorithm and further enhance its search capabilities. Then, by constructing a binary version of CCRIME, the key parameters of FKNN were optimized using a binary conversion method. Finally, a discrete CCRIME-based BCCRIME was developed, which uses an S-shaped function transformation approach to address the feature selection issue by converting the search result into a real number that can only be zero or one. The performance of CCRIME was examined in this study from various perspectives, utilizing 30 benchmark functions from IEEE CEC2017. Basic algorithm comparison tests and sophisticated variant algorithm comparison experiments were also carried out. In addition, this paper also used collected microseismic and blasting data for classification prediction to verify the ability of the BCCRIME-FKNN model to process real data. In this study, we propose a fast calculation method that utilizes Kirchhoff's hypotheses and electroelasticity theory to derive the resonant frequency, antiresonant frequency, and effective electromechanical coupling coefficient of a trilaminar bending ring transducer with unequal diameters. The accuracy of the theoretical method is validated through finite element analysis (FEM) and experimental tests. Furthermore, we perform optimization of the effective electromechanical coupling coefficient of the first-order bending vibration of the trilaminar bending ring transducer. Our optimization results indicate that, under the free inner and fixed outer boundary conditions, the effective electromechanical coupling coefficient initially increases to a maximum value and then rapidly decreases as r1/r2 increases. This behavior can be attributed to the out-of-phase vibrations and the in-phase electric field excitation on both sides of the bending ring vibration nodal circle. Finally, we present the optimized size configuration required to achieve the maximum effective electromechanical coupling coefficient. This study provides theoretical guidance for the design and optimization of trilaminar bending ring transducers with unequal diameters and has the potential to significantly advance the field of crosswell seismic source technology. Glaciers generate seismic waves due to calving and fracturing, meaning that recording and following event classification can be used to monitor glacier dynamics. Our aim with this study is to analyse seismic data acquired at the seabed and on land in front of Nordenskiöldbreen on Svalbard during 8 days in October 2020. The survey included 27 ocean bottom nodes, each equipped with 3 geophones and a hydrophone, and 101 land‐based geophones. The resulting data contain numerous seismic P‐, S‐ and Scholte wave events throughout the study period, as well as non‐seismic gravity waves. The recording quality strongly depends on receiver type and location, especially for the latter wave types. Our results demonstrate that hydrophones at the seabed are advantageous to record gravity waves, and that Scholte waves are only recorded close to the glacier. The Scholte waves are used to estimate the near‐surface S‐wave profile of the seabed sediments, and the gravity wave amplitudes are converted to wave heights at the surface. We further discuss possible source mechanisms for the recorded events and present evidence that waves from earthquakes, calving and brittle fracturing of the glacier and icebergs are all represented in the data. The interpretation is based on frequency content, duration, seismic velocities and onset (emergent/impulsive) and is supported by source localization, which we show is challenging for this dataset. In conclusion, our study demonstrates the potential of using seismic observations for detecting glacier‐related events and provides valuable knowledge about the importance of survey geometry, particularly the advantages of including seabed receivers in the vicinity of the glacier. Monitoring bedload transport in rivers is a challenging research domain teeming with technical innovations and methodological developments aimed at improving our knowledge and models of bedload processes at different spatial–temporal scales. Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology has improved sediment tracking, allowing the characterisation of transport processes of individual particles at flood‐event scales. Meanwhile, geophone sensors have enabled the long‐term continuous monitoring of seismic signals that can provide surrogate measures of bedload fluxes at local scales, during flood events and at sediment‐pulses. The combination of these two techniques could allow sediment transport processes to be linked with both flood events and sediment pulses. In this study, we used a combination of active ultra‐high frequency RFID technology and geophone monitoring stations to link the virtual velocity of tracers with seismic activity, hydraulic forcing, and the properties of the tracked particles. Single and multiple regression models show that seismic activity best explained the observed variance (81%) of the virtual velocity of particles, in comparison with discharge (58%) and stream power (63%). Furthermore, when several control variables (seismic activity and particle properties) were combined in an empirical model, the model explained 89% of the variance and allowed quantification of the portions of the variance explained by hydraulic forcing, geophonic activity and tracked particles. These results show the high potential of these combined monitoring techniques for future in‐field experiments to investigate bedload processes at different spatiotemporal scales in rivers of different morphologies. The falling weight deflectometer (FWD) test is a common non-destructive testing method for evaluating the structural capacity of pavements. At present, data processing of the FWD test mainly focuses on the deflection data, while paying less attention to the deflection-time history. Because a FWD is equipped with impulse loads and geophones, which allow for the generation and capture of surface wave signal propagation, it is hypothesized that Rayleigh wave dispersion theory can be applied to calculate the modulus profile along the pavement depth by analysing the dispersive properties of the deflection signal measured during FWD tests. To test this hypothesis, we develop a new methodology for the FWD test and data analysis, referred to as the FWD dispersion curve method. We first introduce the concept of the new method, followed by an illustration of the procedure and the experimental set-up. Case studies on three concrete pavement segments are then presented to evaluate the effectiveness of the FWD dispersion curve method. Modifications to the existing FWD device are further recommended for the impact loading sources and signal collection process so that the modulus of a much shallower layer, such as the concrete slab and upper asphalt layers, can be obtained. Marine seismic surveys are widely used to explore oil and gas resources and monitor CO2 storage. In particular, ocean-bottom seismic surveys allow the acquisition of high-quality data without the influence of the water-layer environment. However, ocean-bottom seismic surveys are more expensive than streamer surveys and P-wave survey data exhibit free-surface multiples, which are persistent problems. PZ summation can be applied to process multicomponent ocean-bottom seismic data, which effectively reduces ghosting and water-layer reverberation by combining hydrophone and vertical geophone data. In this study, we processed and analysed ocean-bottom cable data from a shallow gas area offshore from Korea. In our field-survey simulation, PZ summation was applied to the synthetic data to separate up-going and down-going wavefields and attenuate free-surface multiples. In addition, improved image can be obtained compared to conventional stack section by applying seismic interferometry to the acquired up-going wavefield data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During 1975–1988, an academic research ship, R/V Robert D. Conrad, acquired more than 150,000‐line‐km of multichannel seismic reflection profile data from each of the world's main ocean basins and their margins. This extensive legacy seismic data set, which involved both single ship and two‐ship data acquisition, has been widely used by the marine geoscience community. We report on our experience in reprocessing seismic reflection profile data acquired during Conrad cruise RC2308 to the Hawaiian Islands region in August/September 1982. We show that the application of modern, industry standard processing techniques, including filtering, de‐bubble, deconvolution, and migration, can significantly enhance 40+ year old legacy seismic reflection profile data. The reprocessed data reveals more precisely, and with much less scatter, the flexure of Cretaceous Pacific oceanic crust caused by the Pliocene‐Recent volcanic loads that comprise the Hawaiian Islands. A comparison of observed picks of top oceanic crust which has been corrected for the Hawaiian swell and the Molokai Fracture Zone with the calculations of a simple 3‐dimensional elastic plate (flexure) model reveals a best fit elastic plate thickness of the lithosphere, Te, of 26.7 km, an average infill density of 2,701 kg m−3, and a Root Mean Square difference between observations and calculations of 305 m. Tests show these results depend weakly on the load density assumed and that the average infill density is close to what would be predicted from an arithmetic average of the flanking moat infill density and the infill density that immediately underlies the volcanic edifice. Plain Language Summary: The mid‐1970s to mid‐1980s saw a rapid increase in the acquisition of marine seismic reflection profile data by academic research vessels using large airgun arrays and long multichannel streamers. The data have provided some of the best images we have of the structure of mid‐ocean ridges, transform faults and fracture zones, and deep‐sea trenches; however, the processing of these data was rudimentary in comparison to modern standards. We show here how reprocessing of seismic reflection profile data acquired some 40+ years ago in the vicinity of the Hawaiian Islands that utilize modern methods of filtering, deconvolution, and migration technologies have significantly improved imaging of the top and bottom of oceanic crust, reducing the scatter in reflector depths from a legacy data set by almost a factor of two. This, in turn, has led to improved resolution of the large‐scale deformation caused by the individual volcano loads that comprise the Hawaiian Islands and, since the ages of these loads and the ocean floor on which these loads have been emplaced are known, to a better understanding of the stress state, strength, and rheological properties of Earth's tectonic plates. The Tibetan Plateau and its surroundings have recently experienced several catastrophic glacier-related disasters. It is of great scientific and practical significance to establish ground-based early warning systems (EWSs) to understand the processes and mechanisms of glacial disasters and warn against potential threats to downstream settlements and infrastructure. However, there are few sophisticated EWSs on the Tibetan Plateau. With the support of the Second Tibetan Plateau Scientific Expedition and Research Program (STPSER), an EWS was developed and implemented in the Sedongpu Valley, southeastern Tibetan Plateau, where repeated river blockages have occurred due to ice/rock collapse debris flow. The EWS collected datasets of optical/thermal videos/photos, geophone waveforms, water levels, and meteorological variables in this sparsely populated zone. It has successfully warned against three ice-rock collapse–debris flow–river blockage chain events, and seven small-scale ice-rock collapse–debris flow events. Meanwhile, it was found that the low-cost geophone can effectively indicate the occurrence and magnitude of ice/rock collapses by local thresholds, and water level observation is an efficient way to warn of river blockages. Our observations showed that there were no immediate meteorological triggers for the ice-rock collapses and associated debris flows. Several factors, such as the volume and location of the collapses and the percentage of ice content involved, influence the velocities of debris flows and the magnitude of river blockages. There are still two possible glaciers in the study area that are at risk of ice collapse. It is worth monitoring their dynamic changes using high-resolution satellite data and the ground-based EWS to safeguard the surrounding hydrological projects and infrastructure in this transboundary region. The first seismic station of the Seismic Network of Sofia University (SNSU) was built in 2023 with funding from the Scientific Research Fund of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski". The station is operating in the Faculty of Physics since September 2023. The equipment consists of a seismometer Geophone 4.5 Hz and a digitiser PSNADC24. A portable computer is used for data recording and archiving. During the month of station operation several earthquakes in Bulgaria and neighbouring countries were analysed. The spectrum of the seismic noise from the station was analysed for different periods. The characteristics of the terrain of station installation were also determined using the method H/V. Although the equipment has modest capabilities, it allows students and young scientists to work directly with the seismic equipment and to do scientific investigations. The accelerometers and the angular velocity sensor, which are part of the meteorological complex of the ExoMars-2022 landing platform (LP), are designed to measure the acceleration during the deceleration of the lander in the Martian atmosphere. Based on the data, the main parameters of the Martian atmosphere are calculated: density, pressure, and temperature. After landing, the sensors are used to determine the acceleration on the surface and vibration effects on the lander of various nature. The sensors are activated prior to entry into the atmosphere and operate during the entire descent until landing. After landing, a long-term monitoring is carried out to identify vibration effects from the atmosphere and the surface. In the paper we consider the scientific problems solved by the sensors, describe the measurement program and consider in detail the design of the sensors and their characteristics.
