Comprehensive knowledge on the tempo and style of shortening, exhumation, and sedimentary evolution of the Southern Patagonian Andes and its related Magallanes-Austral foreland basin have remained elusive. Throughout the history of the Southern Patagonian Andes three approaches and collisions of spreading ridges, periods of tectonic erosion, and possible subduction flat-slab events have interacted with the continental margin. Moreover, the opening of the oceanic Drake Passage (i.e., the opening of the Scotia Sea) between the Antarctic Peninsula and South America and the overall Cenozoic reorganization of the tectonic plates setting and kinematic, certainly positions this Andean segment as one of the most complexes. Notwithstanding, the southern Patagonian Andes and its Magallanes-Austral foreland basin offer a unique opportunity to evaluate how and to what extent the changing geodynamic setting control the development and evolution of an Andean-type orogen foreland basin pair. In this research proposal I will envisage the Magallanes fold and thrust belt (orogenic wedge) and the Magallanes Austral foreland basin (51°15”S-53°39”S) as an integrated orogen foreland basin pair where combine both the geometry, evolution and filling pattern of the syntectonic sedimentary basin with the kinematics constraint of the adjacent mountain belt to understand the evolutionary stages of this Cordilleran system and to discriminate between the different processes that controlled the geodynamic evolution of this part of the Andes: crustal thickening related to tectonic shortening, dynamic topography related to the subduction processes, interactions between climatic and tectonic changes, among others. The intermediate position of the study area (between 2 main structural regimes: compression and transpression) and complete latest Cretaceous-Cenozoic stratigraphy will give insights into the contribution of the contractional versus transpressional dominated processes and will provide reliable and accurate answers regarding if the long-term evolution of the Patagonian orogeny corresponds to punctuated (, Les connaissances sur le tempo et le style de raccourcissement, d'exhumation et d'évolution sédimentaire des Andes de Patagonie méridionale et de son bassin d'avant-pays associé, le bassin Magallanes-Austral, restent parcellaires. Au cours de l'histoire des Andes de Patagonie méridionale, l'arrivée et la subduction de trois dorsales océaniques, des périodes d'érosion tectonique et de possibles événements d'horizontalisation du slab ont interagi avec la marge continentale. L'ouverture du passage océanique de Drake (c'est-à-dire l'ouverture de la mer Scotia) entre la Péninsule Antarctique et l'Amérique du Sud et la réorganisation générale de la configuration et de la cinématique des plaques tectoniques au Cénozoïque placent certainement ce segment andin parmi les plus complexes. Cependant, les Andes de Patagonie méridionale et leur bassin d'avant-pays, le bassin Magallanes-Austral, offrent une occasion unique d'évaluer comment et dans quelle mesure l'environnement géodynamique et ses variations contrôlent le développement et l'évolution du couple orogène de style andin / bassin d'avant-pays. Dans cette proposition de recherche, j'envisage d'étudier la chaîne plissée de Magallanes (prisme orogénique) et le bassin d'avant-pays associé (51°15”S-53°39”S). J'étudierai le schéma de remplissage du bassin sédimentaire syn-tectonique en relation avec la cinématique de la propagation de la déformation dans les chaînes adjacentes, pour comprendre les étapes évolutives de ce système de la Cordillère et apporter des réponses bien contraintes concernant les mécanismes qui conduisent au soulèvement des Andes australes : part de la tectonique compressive, de la topographie dynamique liée au processus de subduction, des interactions tectonique-climat entraînant l'exhumation de la chaîne de montagnes, entre autres. La zone d'étude se situe à la jonction entre deux régimes structuraux dominés par la compression d'un côté, et la transpression de l'autre. L'enregistrement stratigraphique complet allant du Crétacé terminal au Cénozoïque permet d'avoir un aperçu de la contribution relative des processus compressifs et transpressifs, et de caractériser précisément l'évolution à long terme de l'orogenèse patagonne. La Salle du Dôme, au sein du réseau karstique des Grottes de Han-sur-Lesse, est la plus grande cavité reconnue en termes de volume souterrain en Belgique. Un pli-faille de grande ampleur affecte son plafond. En février 2016, un modèle 3D haute résolution de la Salle du Dôme a été réalisé par acquisition lasergrammétrique (lidar terrestre). Ce modèle a abouti à une représentation visuelle complète de la cavité. Pour une analyse structurale quantitative des fractures et discontinuités des roches dans une cavité karstique, l’imagerie lidar est un outil très efficace, car il permet de capturer avec acuité les morphologies des parois des grottes, objets souvent peu accessibles directement. L’acquisition topographique haute résolution a permis l’analyse de la fracturation de la Salle du Dôme dans les 3 dimensions de l’espace. Celle-ci est ensuite intégrée à l’histoire tectonique régionale. À partir du logiciel de rétro-ingénierie 3DReshaper©, la visualisation géométrique du pli-faille est obtenue par la mise en place d’une succession de plans créés à partir de minimum trois points sur les plans de stratification. La direction et le pendage de chaque plan sont déterminés par trigonométrie à partir des coordonnées des normales, calculées par le programme de visualisation. Sur la base du modèle 3D, un canevas structural du plafond est proposé. À terme, l’analyse structurale à partir d’une imagerie LIDAR aboutit à mieux cerner la géométrie et la dynamique d’une structure régionale qui joue un rôle indéniable dans l’évolution de la karstogenèse de la cavité. The “Salle du Dôme”, located in the middle of the karstic network of the Han-sur-Lesse Cave, is the biggest known cavity in terms of underground volume in Belgium. A large fold thrust can be seen across its roof. In February 2016 a high resolution 3D model of the “Salle du Dôme” was generated, using lasergrammetry acquisition (terrestrial Lidar). This model resulted in a complete visual representation of the cavity. Lidar images are very useful to perform structural quantitative analysis of the fractures and discontinuities of rocks in a karstic cavity, because the cave walls are usually difficult to access. The analysis of the fractures of the “Salle du Dôme” was then integrated into the regional tectonic history. Thanks to the reverse engineering software 3DReshaper©, it became possible to create a geometrical viewing of the fold thrust by a succession of planes created with at least three points on the stratification planes. The direction and dip of each plane are determined with trigonometric calculations, based on the coordinates of their normals, which are available thanks to the viewer software. On the basis of the 3D model, it is possible to present a structural pattern of the roof. Finally, the structural analysis based on Lidar images helps to better understand the geometry and dynamics of a regional structure which plays an undeniable role in the evolution of the karstogenesis of the cavity.

The Greater Caucasus Mountain Belt is a rifted basin that formed during the Middle Jurassic to the Upper Cretaceous and has been inverted during the Cenozoic (age still debated). The belt is deformed by a complex combination of thick and thin-skinned tectonic. We talk about thick-skinned tectonic when the basement is involved in the deformations, and thin-skinned deformation when the cover is deformed.The flexural basin of the Greater Caucasus developped since the Lower Cretaceous during the collision in the Lesser Caucasus between the Taurides-Anatolides-South-Armenian microcontinent and the Eurasian plate, and is still active because of the collision with the Arabian Plate to the south.The Caucasus frame present a key area for two reasons. First, the propagation of the deformations from the Lesser Caucasus to the south, and toward the north in the Greater Caucasus allow us to better constrain the tectonic evolution of this Tethysian belt’part, and to better understand the inversion tectonic mechanisms.Then, the study of the flexural basin structure, and the involved lithologies, offers the possibility to lead explorations about the oil and gaz resources systems, such as in the Eastern Azerbaijan basin.We propose new field data (cartography, structural and lithostratigraphic analysis) to constrain the shallow structures, and we combine it with seismic lines interpretations and wells data analysis to constrain the deeper structures. The study was lead following two paths: first, we have localised the deformations and their related style and geometries. Then, the identification of the pre-, syn-, and post-tectonic deposits by the identification of growth strata allowed us to propose the chronology of the deformation during the multi-stage tectonic history in different structures of the flexural basin.The first part concerns the study of the Rioni flexural basin that borders the Eastern Black Sea and is located south of the western Greater Caucasus. We highlighted a Barremian to Turonian basin beneath the Rioni flexural basin, and which continues eastward in the Georgian Block.In the second part, we present our results related to the style and the timing of the deformations in the Rioni and the Kura flexural basin during the Paleogene and the Neogene. We highlight a two-stage compression: the first stage is during the Palaeocene-Eocene, and the second since the Upper Miocene. The study of the style of deformation allows us to compare the structural evolution of two basins with regard to the structural inheritance. The Rioni flexural basin structure and the localisation of the deformation are driven by the inherited normal faults, while the Kura flexural basin structure presents only thin-skinned tectonic. Finally, the third part presents our results about the avorted rifted Adjara-Trialet basin. This basin borders to the south the flexural basin, and is affected by the Lower to Upper Cretaceous extension in its western part, south of Rioni. During the Palaeocene-Eocene a superimposed basin was formed and developed eastward, south of the western Kura basin. This extension is coeval with the compression observed in the flexural basin. We show that the structure of this basin is related to the inversion of the inherited normal faults, but is also deformed by thin-skinned tectonic because of some decollement levels in the syn- and post-rift deposits. Our results are presented in three cross-sections and reconstitutions of more than 50km and that cross the whole Trancaucasian area and constrain the structures and the timing of the deformations between the Lesser and the Greater Caucasus since the Lower Cretaceous., Le Grand Caucase est une chaine de montagne correspondant à un bassin Jurassique moyen à Crétacé supérieur, inversé durant le Cénozoïque (âge encore débattu). Les structures de cette chaîne et de son bassin flexural illustrent une combinaison complexe de déformations impliquant la couverture, on parle de « thin-skinned tectonic », et de déformations pouvant impliquer le socle, on parle alors de « thick-skinned tectonic ».Le bassin flexural s’est développé durant deux collisions successives entre le continent Eurasie ainsi que le bloc Tauride-Anatolide-Sud-Arménie depuis le Crétacé Inférieur (collision dans le Petit Caucase), et se poursuit encore actuellement en liaison avec le poinçonnement de l’Arabie au sud. Cette région présente un double intérêt. A un niveau purement fondamental, il est évident que la compréhension de la propagation des déformations entre la zone de collision du Petit Caucase au sud et le Grand Caucase permet de mieux contraindre l’évolution tectonique de ce secteur de la chaîne téthysienne et de comprendre le processus d’inversion tectonique et son moteur. D’un point de vue appliqué, l’étude des structures du bassin flexural et des lithologies impliquées dans la déformation est essentielle pour mener des explorations afin d’étudier les systèmes à hydrocarbures comme cela est le cas à l’Est du bassin en Azerbaïdjan.Cette étude présente de nouvelles données de terrain sur les structures de surface (cartographie, analyse structurale et lithostratigraphique), complétées d’analyses de profils sismiques et de données de forages permettant de contraindre en profondeur les interprétations. Le but de ce travail a été de localiser les structures profondes et les potentiels niveaux de décollements afin de mieux contraindre la géométrie des structures supra-crustales. De plus, l’identification et l’analyse des dépôts sédimentaires syn-tectoniques ont permis de contraindre la chronologie des déformations. Nous présentons tout d’abord l’étude du bassin flexural de Rioni, situé à l’est de la Mer Noire et à l’ouest du Grand Caucase. Nous avons mis en évidence la présence d’un bassin résultant d’une extension depuis le Barrémien jusqu’au Turonien sous le bassin flexural Cénozoïque de Rioni, et qui se prolonge vers l’Est dans le Bloc Géorgien. Ensuite, dans un second temps nous présentons les résultats concernant le style et la chronologie des déformations dans les bassins de Rioni et de Kura pendant la compression qui se déroule en deux temps : au Paléocene-Eocene puis à partir du Miocène Supérieur. Nous montrons par comparaison entre les bassins flexuraux de Rioni à l’ouest, et de Kura à l’est, que la présence des failles normales du Crétacé qui sont présentes sous Rioni influent grandement sur le style et la localisation de la déformation. Enfin, nous présentons nos résultats concernant la structure et l’histoire tectonique du rift avorté et inversé d’Adjara-Trialeti qui longe au sud le bassin flexural. Ce bassin est aussi affecté par les failles normales du Crétacé au sud de Rioni, mais se développe vers l’est au sud du de Kura de manière superposée durant le Paleocene et l’Eocene. Nous montrons alors que la structure de ce bassin est liée à l’inversion des failles normales, mais aussi de déformations résultant de niveaux de décollements dans les sédiments syn et post-rift. Pour présenter nos résultats, nous proposons trois coupes de plus de 50km traversant du sud au nord toute la région du Transcaucase reliant le Petit et le Grand Caucase, ainsi qu’une reconstitution tectonique depuis le Crétacé Inférieur.

The Aegean plate is a complex geodynamic system characterized since Miocene by the interaction between the Hellenic trench retreat and the onset of the Anatolian extrusion. In Plio-Quaternary times, the deformation of the slab in the western part of the Aegean domain and the propagation toward the west of the North Anatolian Fault further complicate the system. The interactions between these phenomena and their deformations presents shadowy areas. There is, in particular, a large NE-SW fault system whose role and characteristics are not studied yet and that are not included in the Aegean geodynamic system. The PhD aims to understand the role of these NE-SW strike-slip faults in the Aegean tectonics since 15 Myr and, in particular, in the Evvia/Attica region. Multi-scale characterization of the deformation of this region was carried out through the acquisition of new field data, apatite fission-track ages, receiver functions, and 3D lithospheric numerical modeling of the deformation. These new field data characterize a dextral strike-slip kinematic on the NE-SW Pelagonian fault. It controls, together with NW-SE normal faults, the deposit of Miocene basins, suggesting a coeval activity of both normal and strike-slip faults during this period. We propose that the Pelagonian fault accommodates the block rotation in Miocene times. The strain inversion from slickenline data on faults indicates the compatibility of normal and strike-slip faults, associated with an extension evolving from N-S to NE-SW (during the rotation of blocks) and an E-W compression. During Plio-quaternary times, a change in stretching direction induces the formation of new E-W normal faults developing within the pre-existing NE-SW fault zones that became sinistral. These fault systems formed oblique rifts and are associated with a radial N-S extension incompatible with the NE-SW fault’s activity. We suppose that this change is due to the evolution of the west slab deformation. Apatite fission-track ages show a difference in ages of exhumation between Central Greece and the Cyclades. Thus, we suggest that the Pelagonian fault accommodates a differential extension during Miocene between the Cyclades and Central Greece, respectively strongly and poorly stretched at this period. Miocene low-temperature ages from NW-SE normal faults hanging-walls seems to confirm their activity in Miocene times, coeval with the strike-slip Pelagonian fault activity. Our new receiver function data also quantify a differential extension by characterizing a deeper Moho underneath Central Greece (26.5 km) than underneath the Cyclades (25 km) and Sporades (24.3 km). An analysis of the dip and the seismic signal perturbation suggests that the transition between Central Greece and the Cyclades occurs in a narrow zone, delimited by dextral NE-SW Pelagonian and South-Evvia faults. In between Central Greece and the Sporades, this Moho step is accommodated by a high-angle normal fault. Thus, the differential extension is laterally accommodated by these crustal faults as well as by the internal deformation of blocks they delimit. These new data point out the significance of strike-slip faults in the Aegean geodynamic since the Miocene. They accommodate the E-W shortening and define different blocks that rotate during the back-arc extension. Finally, our 3D models indicate that horizontal and orthogonal extension and compression at equivalent rates induce the formation of strike-slip faults within a hot continental lithosphere. These models suggest that the coeval activity of the extension due to the Hellenic trench retreat and the compression associated with the Anatolian extrusion can explain the formation of these strike-slips faults in Aegean.; La plaque Égéenne est un système géodynamique complexe marqué depuis le Miocène, par l’interaction entre le recul de la fosse Hellénique et le début de l’extrusion Anatolienne. Au Plio-Quaternaire, une torsion de la plaque plongeante à l’Ouest du domaine Égéen et la propagation vers l’Ouest de la Faille Nord Anatolienne, compliquent davantage le système. Les interactions entre ces phénomènes et leurs déformations présentent des zones d’ombre. Il existe notamment un large système de failles NE-SO dont le rôle et les caractéristiques sont encore peu étudiés et qui ne sont pas incluses dans la géodynamique du système Égéen. Le but de cette thèse est de comprendre le rôle de ces décrochements NE-SO dans la tectonique Égéenne depuis 15 Ma et en particulier dans la région Eubée/Attique. Une caractérisation multi-échelle de la déformation de cette région a été effectuée au travers de l’acquisition de nouvelles données de terrain, de traces de fission sur apatite, de fonctions récepteur et de modélisations numériques lithosphériques 3D de la déformation. Les nouvelles données de terrain caractérisent une cinématique décrochante dextre sur la faille NE-SO Pélagonienne. Elle contrôle, avec les failles normales NO-SE, le dépôt de bassins Miocènes, suggérant une activité concomitante des failles normales et des décrochements à cette époque. Nous proposons que la faille Pélagonienne accommode les rotations de blocs au Miocène. L’inversion des contraintes à partir des données de stries sur les failles montre une compatibilité des failles normales et décrochantes associée à une extension évoluant de N-S à NE-SO (durant la rotation des blocs) et une compression E-O. Au Plio-Quaternaire, une modification de la direction d’étirement induit la formation de nouvelles failles normales E-O se développant à l’intérieur des zones de failles NO-SE préexistantes, devenues senestres. Ces systèmes de failles forment des rifts obliques et sont associés à une extension N-S radiale incompatible avec l’activité des failles NE-SO. Nous supposons que ce changement est lié à l’évolution de la torsion de la plaque plongeante. Les âges traces de fission sur apatite montrent une différence d’âge d’exhumation entre la Grèce Centrale et les Cyclades. Nous proposons ainsi que la faille Pélagonienne accommode une extension différentielle au Miocène entre les Cyclades et la Grèce Centrale, respectivement fortement et faiblement étirées à cette époque. Des âges basse température Miocènes provenant des murs de failles normales NO-SE semblent confirmer leur activité au Miocène, concomitante de l’activité de la faille décrochante Pélagonienne. Nos nouvelles données de fonctions récepteur quantifient aussi une extension différentielle en caractérisant un Moho plus profond sous la Grèce Centrale (26,5 km) que sous les Cyclades (25 km) et les Sporades (24,3 km). Une analyse du pendage et de la perturbation du signal sismique suggère que la transition entre la Grèce Centrale et les Cyclades se produit dans une zone étroite, limitée par les failles NE-SO dextres Pélagonienne et Sud-Eubée. Entre la Grèce Centrale et les Sporades, ce saut de Moho est accommodé par une faille normale à fort pendage. L’extension différentielle est donc latéralement accommodée par ces failles crustales, mais aussi par la déformation interne des blocs qu’elles délimitent. Ces nouvelles données montrent l’importance des failles décrochantes dans la géodynamique Égéenne depuis le Miocène. Elles accommodent le raccourcissement E-O et définissent différents blocs qui tournent durant l’extension arrière-arc. Enfin, nos modèles 3D montrent qu’une extension et une compression horizontales et orthogonales à taux égaux causent la formation de décrochements dans une lithosphère continentale chaude. Ces modèles suggèrent que l’activité contemporaine de l’extension, liée au recul de la fosse Hellénique, et de la compression, reliée à l’extrusion Anatolienne, peut expliquer la formation des décrochements en Égée.

Fluid-rock interactions are widespread processes on earth including divergent settings from hyper-extended margins to oceanic ridges. There, mantle rocks are exhumedto the seafloor thanks to detachment faults. In the same time, the inception of mafic magmatism occurs during asthenosphere partial melting. Coupling between activemagmatic and tectonic processes triggers hydrothermal circulation in exhuming mantle rocks. This leads to several alterations like: i) the serpentinization of mantle rocks, ii) theformation of Cu-Zn-Fe-Co-Au-Ag-rich hydrothermal mineralized systems and iii) the carbonation of mantle rocks. Mineralization represents critical resources for our technological and societal needs. Hence, studies dealing with ore-forming processes applied to oceanic hydrothermal systems are essential to unravel where and how mineralization forms. However, in present-day oceanic domains, the study of these systems is limited by the bad observation conditions at the seafloor. Hence, one way tofully understand these systems is to turn on fossil analogs preserved on-land. We adopted this strategy here and focused on a Tethyan ophiolite preserved in the Platta nappe where subsequent Alpine metamorphism and deformation had minor effect on oceanic geometries. Sulfide mineralization somewhat similar to this formed in oceanic settings occurred where the magmatic buget was high enough to trigger hydrothermal circulation. The mineralization displays peculiarities (presence of Fe-Ca-silicates, association with mafic intrusions) indicating it corresponds to the root zone of present-day mineralized systems.Geochemical signatures of the mineralization (Co/Ni ratio decrease, Se contentincrease) suggests it formed from hydrothermal fluid mixing with seawater. Subsequently, mantle rocks and basalts recorded a carbonation event under hydrothermal temperatures at about 90-130°C. Syn-tectonic carbonation was the result of serpentinized-derived fluids mixing with seawater at the serpentinite-basalt interface. These alterations reported in mantle rocks from the Platta nappe are the legacy of the diversity of fluid-rock interactions in hyper-extended margins., Les interactions fluide-roches sont des processus omniprésents sur la planète et notamment dans les environnements de divergence lithosphérique, des marges hyper-étendues jusqu’à l’axe des dorsales océaniques. Dans de tels environnements, les roches de la lithosphère profonde sont exhumées au plancher océanique à la faveur de failles de détachement. Parallèlement, un magmatisme s’instaure suite à la fusion partielle asthénosphérique. Le couplage des processus tectoniques et magmatiques entraîne la circulation d’eau de mer dans les roches du manteau qui s’exhument. Cela conduit à l’altération des roches sous différentes formes telles que : i) la serpentinisation des roches du manteau, ii) la formation de systèmes minéralisés riches en Cu, Zn, Fe, Co, Au, Ag et iii) la carbonatation des roches du manteau. Les minéralisations reconnues dans les environnements océaniques actuels représentent un enjeu technologique, économique et sociétal crucial. Par conséquent, l’étude de ces systèmes est indispensable pour comprendre comment et où ils se forment. Cependant, dans les domaines actuels, la reconnaissance de ces altérations est limitée par les conditions d’observation au plancher océanique. Il devient alors impératif de se tourner vers les systèmes fossiles exposés à terre, dans les chaînes de montagne, pour étudier les processus hydrothermaux à l’origine de la formation des minéralisations. Cette stratégie a été adoptée dans ce travail de thèse à travers l’étude d’’une ophiolite téthysienne préservée dans les Alpes suisses. La déformation et le métamorphisme alpin n’ont eu que peu de conséquences sur les structures et altérations océaniques. Des minéralisations sulfurées similaires à celles reportées aux dorsales océaniques sont présentes dans la nappe là où le budget magmatique a été suffisant pour enclencher des circulations de haute température. Les minéralisations montrent quelques particularités ; présence de Fe-Ca-silicates, association des minéralisations avec des intrusifs mafiques ; diagnostics d’une position structurale profonde. L’évolution des traceurs géochimique (Se, Co/Ni) et minéralogiques de la minéralisation suggèrent qu’elle résulte du mélange entre un fluide hydrothermal et l’eau de mer. Postérieurement, les roches mantelliques et les basaltes ont subi une carbonatation à partir d’un fluide d’origine marine sous des conditions hydrothermales de 90-130°C. Cette carbonatation, se produisant durant une tectonique extensive active, résulte du mélange entre un fluide issu de la serpentinisation et l’eau de mer. Ces différentes altérations des roches du manteau dans la nappe de Platta montrent la richesse des interactions fluides-roches dans les marges hyper-étendues.

The Betic-Rif Cordillera, located in the western part of the Mediterranean, results from the convergence of the European and African plates and related subduction processes. It is therefore an exceptional site to study the processes induced by subduction dynamics. This thesis focuses on the study of the internal domain of the Rif chain. Two key areas have been selected (Ceuta and Cabo Negro) where high pressure-low temperature crustal rocks (HP-LT) (present only in Ceuta) but also low pressure-high temperature rocks (LP-HT) and ultrabasic rocks outcrop. Their tectonic significance, placement mode and ages are still heavily debated subjects. A multidisciplinary approach was developed to carry out this work, with a detailed structural and petrographic study, as well as U/Th/Pb dating on zircon, monazite and xenotime and 40Ar/39Ar on white mica. The results obtained show that: (i) at circa 29 Ma a medium pressure-high temperature metamorphism (MP-HT) affects the lower Sebtides and Ghomarides. This phase is simultaneous with a thickening of the crust and the placement of diorite sill having a geochemical signature of calc-alkaline to high-K magmatic arc. This phase is contemporaneous to the HP-LT metamorphism observed in the crustal units of the upper Sebtides (ii) at circa 21 Ma an extension phase contributes to the final exhumation of these rocks. This event is associated with a metamorphic episode developed at the boundary between Amphibolite and Greenschist facies conditions, at 400-550°C and 1-3 kbar. The quasi-contemporary emplacement of metamorphic units with radically different thermal gradients is characteristic of “paired metamorphic belts”. In this case we propose the following model: at 29 Ma, during Alpine subduction, the units of the Ghomarides and Lower Sebtides are located within the upper plate of the subduction system where the MP-HT metamorphism develops. In parallel, the HP-LT metamorphism occurs within the lower plate constituted by the upper Sebtides. Dehydration of the lower plate induces calc-alkaline magmatism in the upper plate. At 21 Ma, the slab rollback produces an extension phase creating the opening of the Alboran basin and the exhumation of the HP-LT units., La chaîne Bético-Rifaine, située dans la partie occidentale de la Méditerranée, est le résultat de la convergence des plaques européenne et africaine et des processus de subduction qui en résultent. Il s’agit donc d’un lieu d’exception pour étudier les processus liés à la dynamique de la subduction. Cette thèse se focalise sur l’étude du domaine interne de la chaine du Rif. Deux zones d’étude ont été sélectionnées (Ceuta et Cabo Negro) où affleurent des roches crustales de haute pression-basse température (HP-BT) (seulement à Ceuta) mais aussi des roches de basse pression-haute température (BP-HT) ainsi que des roches ultrabasiques dont la signification tectonique, le mode et les âges de mise en place restent encore très débattus. Une approche multi-pluridisciplinaire a été effectuée pour réaliser ce travail, avec une étude structurale et pétrographique détaillée, ainsi que des datations U/Th/Pb sur zircon, monazite et xénotime et 40Ar/39Ar sur mica blanc. Les résultats obtenus démontrent que : (i) à environ 29 Ma un métamorphisme de moyenne pression-haute température (MP-HT) affecte les unités des Sebtides inférieures et Ghomarides. Cette phase est contemporaine d’un épaississement de la croûte et de la mise en place de sills de diorite ayant une signature géochimique d’arc magmatique calco-alcalin fortement potassique. Cette phase est d'autre part contemporaine du métamorphisme de HP-BT observé dans les unités crustales des Sebtides supérieures, (ii) à environ 21 Ma une phase d’extension contribue à l’exhumation finale de ces roches. Cet évènement est associé à un épisode métamorphique qui se développe à la limite des conditions des facies amphibolites et schistes verts, sous des conditions de 400-550°C et 1-3 kbar. La combinaison quasi-contemporaine d’unités métamorphiques de gradients thermiques radicalement différents est caractéristique des « ceintures métamorphiques appariées ». Dans ce cas nous proposons le modèle suivant : à 29 Ma, pendant la subduction Alpine, les unités des Ghomarides et Sebtides inférieures se situent au niveau de la plaque supérieure du système de subduction où se développe le métamorphisme de MP-HT. En parallèle le métamorphisme de HP-BT se manifeste dans le panneau plongeant constitué par les Sebtides supérieures. La déshydratation de la plaque plongeante induit un magmatisme calco-alcalin dans la plaque supérieure. A 21 Ma, le recul de la plaque plongeante produit une phase d’extension créant l’ouverture du bassin d’Alboran et l’exhumation des unités de HP-BT.

The Valence basin is a graben located in the Rhodanian corridor which belongs to the ECRIS system, and is the subject of many studies due to its geothermal potential. In response to its a multiphase history, fracture networks of the basement and sedimentary cover which are targeted for geothermal exploitation show a complex organization. This study aims to characterize facture networks organization in the Valence basin. It is based on seismic and borehole data in the basin, as well as geological maps, digital elevation model (DEM) and outcrops on the Ardèche margin. Two methodological studies were developed to characterize the orientation and length distributions. These methods allowed to determine fracture network modelling parameters, and highlighted a structural heritage but also a detachment between the basement and the cover.; Le bassin de Valence, un fossé d’effondrement appartenant au système ECRIS localisé le long du couloir Rhodanien, est l’objet d’études approfondies quant à son potentiel géothermique. Dû à l’histoire évolutive polyphasée du bassin, les réseaux de fractures du socle et de la base de la couverture sédimentaire ciblés pour l’exploitation géothermique présentent une organisation complexe. Cette étude vise donc à caractériser l’organisation du bassin de Valence et de ces réseaux de fractures. Elle s’appuie sur les données sismiques et de forages du bassin, ainsi que les cartes géologiques, le modèle numérique du terrain et des affleurements de la marge ardéchoise. Deux méthodes de caractérisation des orientations et des longueurs des fractures sont développées dans ce travail. Leur application a permis de déterminer les paramètres des modèles de réseaux de fractures, et a mis en évidence un fort héritage structural mais aussi un découplage du socle et de la couverture.

International audience; Les transitions océan-continent (OCT) sont reconnues comme des environnements propices à la formation et au piégeage d’hydrocarbures. Ainsi lors des dernières décennies, de nombreuses études ont été entreprises à travers l’acquisition de données de sismique réflexion, de modélisation numérique et analogique ou encore l’étude d’analogues de terrain. Une importante découverte a été la reconnaissance de roches mantelliques exhumées par des détachements dans les parties les plus distales de certaines marges. Ces structures ressemblent à celles imagées le long des rides océaniques au niveau des Oceanic Core Complex. Ces structures tectoniques focalisent des circulations de fluides réagissant avec de larges volumes de roches mafiques (systèmes hydrothermaux) et ultramafiques (serpentinisation, ophicalcitisation) et aboutissent notamment à des minéralisations spécifiques (sites de Rainbow, Lost-City, TAG sur la dorsale atlantique). Dans la nappe de la Platta (Canton des Grisons, Suisse), les serpentinites sont affectées par une carbonatation importante (ophicalcites) en relation spatiale avec un détachement Jurassique associé avec la formation de l’océan téthysien. Dans ce travail nous caractérisons d’abord d’un point de vue structural les relations entre les circulations fluides génératrices d’ophicalcites et le fonctionnement du détachement, en suite de quoi nous caractérisons par une approche pétro-géochimique, notamment en isotopes stables, les sources des fluides impliquées et les conditions de leur circulation. La carbonatation affecte les basaltes au toit du détachement ainsi que les serpentinites sous-jacentes sur quelques dizaines de mètres. Les compositions isotopiques des veines calcitiques recoupant les basaltes autant que les serpentinites sont homogènes à la fois en δ18O (autour de 16%o) et δ13C (0-1%o). Ces données sont compatibles avec un seul événement de carbonatation. Le fluide est dérivé de l’eau de mer, et génère la carbonatation à des températures entre 90 et 105 C. La circulation des fluides est associée à l’avènement du magmatisme basaltique, dont : i) les épanchements ont fourni la charge lithostatique requise pour la réactivation de ce segment du détachement ; ii) la chaleur a déclenché l’advection de fluides, en particulier, à l’interface basalte-serpentinite. Le système de la Platta représente un " end-member " des processus de carbonatation hydrothermaux en relation avec le magmatisme dans un contexte d’exhumation mantellique.

Les roches volcanogéniques de la Mine de Seival appartiennent à la Formation Hilário du Bassin de Camaquã, d’âge Néoprotérozoique. Cette zone contient six mines inactives avec diverses zones de prospection du cuivre et de l’argent. Les minéralisations semblent associées à un contrôle structural en régime cassant. La compréhension des transformations chimiques liées à l’hydrothermalisme et associées aux paléo-contraintes est assez méconnue dans la région. L'étude présentée fut basée sur l'obtention de mesures structurales pour comprendre les contraintes et leur cinématique dans la région, associée aux transformations chimiques des minéraux des phases magmatiques et hydrothermales de haute et basse températures. Fractures et les minéralisations montrent une direction principale N40-60°E/70-88°NW souvent associées à des veines de calcite. Les structures profondes de direction NW-SE et NE-SW étaient liées aux filons volcaniques, aux circulations de fluides hydrothermaux et aux minéralisations associées. Une modélisation thermodynamique utilisant les différentes phases minérales (magmatiques et hydrothermales) a permis d’estimer les températures de haute (tardi-magmatique) et basse (altération hydrothermale). L’albitisation (650 à 250°C) s’est produite en association avec une chloritisation (312 à 120°C). La déstabilisation des sulfures primaires (pyrite et chalcopyrite) dans les sulfures riches en cuivre (bornite-chalcocite) était associée à des interstratifiés de chlorite/smectite à des températures d'environ 250 à 50°C. Ces mêmes interstratifiés chlorite/smectite indiquent des zones riches en cuivre. Les événements plus tardifs (

Tout au long de l’histoire de structuration des Pyrénées, le jeu des grands accidents tectoniquesfont de la zone de piémont nord-pyrénéen une aire privilégiée de circulation de fluides. Parmiceux-ci, la présence de saumures profondes riches en CO2 et H2S a été attestée dans les réservoirspétroliers sud-aquitains d’âge Crétacé. Impliqués dans des processus de migration vers les margesde bassin, ces fluides sont susceptibles de former des cavités dans l’encaissant calcaire là où lesremontées d’H2S entrent en contact avec du dioxygène, produisant ainsi du H2SO4. C’est cettehypothèse de spéléogenèse à acide sulfurique (SAS) que la présente étude cherche à explorer dansles Pyrénées.Les premières campagnes de terrain dans les massifs karstiques d’âge Jurassique-Crétacé inférieurdes Arbailles (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) et de St-Pé-de-Bigorre (Hautes-Pyrénées) mettent en évidenceau sein de plusieurs karsts des indices morphologiques (chenaux de voûte, coupoles, poches desubstitution) et minéraux (sulfates, sulfures, carbonates hydrothermaux) compatibles avec la SAS.Ces réseaux karstiques sont notamment localisés proche de sources thermominérales chloruréessodiques et contenant pour certaines des concentrations anormales en sulfates et sulfures.L’objectif de cette étude consistera à replacer cette spéléogenèse dans le continuum des interactionsfluides-roches ayant affecté la zone nord-pyrénéenne, depuis l’hyper-extension au Crétacé jusqu’àaujourd’hui. Dans un premier temps, le lien entre les morphologies karstiques, la fabriquestructurale des marqueurs de fluide et le contexte tectonique sera discuté dans le but dereconstruire la dynamique des karsts hypogènes et de l’intégrer dans l’histoire géologique desPyrénées. Ensuite, en s’appuyant sur les analyses minéralogiques et la géochimie isotopique dusoufre des minéraux témoins de la SAS, nous nous attacherons à établir les séquencesparagénétiques de dissolution/précipitation des karsts ainsi qu’à décrypter la source des fluidesimpliqués dans le creusement des cavités.

Fold-and-thrust-belts form in a compressive geological context and represent the external part of orogens.They are composed of numerous folds and thrusts generally rooted in a shallow décollement level located in the basal part of the sedimentary cover.These belts have been studied extensively during the XX century. They have been modeled kinematically, analogically and mechanically.The mechanical aspect of deformation must be taken into account in structural geology, but yet, mechanical models remain underused by the structural geologist.The objective of this thesis is to show how to bring mechanical constraints to the study of geological structures with a mechanical theory easily usable in structural geology, the Limit Analysis.This theory represents a good compromise between the kinematic models and the finite element mechanical models, very complete but relatively complicated to use.We study here examples from the Jura fold-and-thrust belt and use the softwares Optum G2 and SLAMTec.We proceed with two different approaches.The first one is presented in the first part of this manuscript and consists in studying the past deformation.We focus on Saint-Ursanne area, in the North-East Switzerland Jura.We construct first a 2D geological cross section of the Mont Terri structure and then we extend this work in 3D by a series of cross sections that scan the whole Saint Ursanne area.These cross-sections are drawn using kinematical rules, mechanical modeling with Limit Analysis and analog sandbox modeling.We show the importance of the tectonic inheritance on the onset of structures in the studied region and we mechanically model the influence of a décollement offset due to an inherited normal fault during a subsequent compressive episode.We show that this offset represents a “fault generator” and a catching point that slows the propagation of the deformation front and furthermore controls the orientation of the structure that develops.We also show that the topography plays a major role in the establishment of geological structures.In the second part of the manuscript we follow a second approach that consists in studying the current deformation.We change of scale and study the current tectonics of the entire Jura.Our models predict that this belt, formed in thin-skin tectonics, is currently partially affected by thick-skin tectonics.The western Jura would be still affected by a thin-skin tectonics, but the basement should be involved in the deformation in the north-east Jura.However, we show that a thick-skin tectonics does not preclude the simultaneous activation of the shallower décollements contained by the sedimentary cover (Triassic evaporites, in the Jura).Practical interest of these methods is illustrated by industrial questions: the last chapter presents a study of geological cross-sections from a studied area of Nagra in the eastern Jura.We look at the current mechanical answer under compression of the proposed structural interpretations.The numerical tools used in this work have been the subject of a tutorial made during a mission at Total company.; Les chaînes plissées d'avant-pays sont des objets géologiques qui se forment dans un contexte compressif et représentent la partie externe des orogènes.Elles sont composées de nombreuses structures plissées associées à des chevauchements généralement enracinés au sein d'un niveau de décollement peu profond situé dans la partie basale de la couverture sédimentaire. Ces objets géologiques ont été beaucoup étudiés au XXème siècle.Ils ont été modélisés cinématiquement, analogiquement et mécaniquement.S’il est indispensable de tenir compte de l’aspect mécanique en géologie structurale, les modèles mécaniques restent cependant trop peu utilisés par le géologue structuraliste.L'objectif de cette thèse est de montrer comment apporter des contraintes mécaniques à l'étude des structures géologiques, grâce à une théorie mécanique facilement utilisable en géologie structurale.Cette théorie, le calcul à la rupture (Limit Analysis), représente en effet un bon intermédiaire entre les modèles cinématiques et les modèles mécaniques en éléments finis, très complets mais relativement complexes d'utilisation.Nous étudions ici des exemples appartenant à la chaîne plissée d’avant-pays du Jura et utilisons les logiciels Optum G2 et SLAMTec.Nous procédons alors selon deux approches. La première approche, présentée en première partie de ce manuscrit consiste à étudier la déformation passée.Nous nous focalisons sur la région de Saint-Ursanne dans le Nord-Est du Jura, en Suisse et réalisons dans un premier temps une coupe géologique d'une structure que nous étendons ensuite en 3D via une série de coupes balayant l'ensemble de la zone d'étude.Pour réaliser ces coupes nous utilisons à la fois des principes d’équilibrage cinématique, des modélisations mécaniques par calcul à la rupture et des modélisations analogiques en boîte à sable.Nous montrons ainsi l’importance de l’héritage tectonique sur la mise en place des structures de cette région et modélisons mécaniquement l’influence d’un décalage du niveau de décollement par une faille normale héritée, lors d’un épisode compressif ultérieur.Nous montrons alors que ce décalage représente un générateur de failles ainsi qu’un point d’accroche qui ralenti la propagation du front de déformation, contrôlant par ailleurs la direction de la structure qui se développera.Nous montrons également que la topographie joue un rôle majeur dans la mise en place des structures géologiques.Dans la deuxième partie du manuscrit nous abordons une seconde approche qui consiste à étudier la déformation actuelle.Nous changeons cette fois-ci d’échelle pour nous intéresser à la tectonique actuelle de l’ensemble du Jura.Nos modélisations prédisent que cette chaîne plissée, formée par une tectonique de couverture, est aujourd’hui partiellement affectée par une tectonique de socle.Alors que la partie ouest du Jura serait toujours affectée par une tectonique de couverture, le socle devrait aujourd’hui être impliqué dans la déformation au niveau de la partie nord-est.Nous montrons cependant qu’une tectonique de socle n’empêche pas l’activation simultanée des niveaux de décollements situés dans la couverture (les évaporites triasiques, dans le cas du Jura).L’intérêt pratique de ces méthodes est illustré par des questions industrielles : le dernier chapitre présente une étude des coupes géologiques d’un terrain d’étude de la Nagra, situé dans l’est du Jura.Nous regardons la réponse mécanique actuelle en compression de l’interprétation structurale proposée.Les outils numériques utilisés dans l’ensemble de ce travail ont, par ailleurs, fait l’objet d’un tutoriel réalisé dans le cadre d’une mission au sein de l’entreprise Total.

No abstract available.; L'objectif de cette thèse était de caractériser la déformation récente, tant dans son style que dans son partitionnement, d'un arc orogénique lent à travers une approche pluridisciplinaire à grande échelle.La déformation récente et actuelle de l'arc du Jura a été caractérisée par l'analyse des indices géomorphologiques le long des profils de rivières ainsi qu'à travers le traitement des données sismiques et géodésiques. Les essais de caractérisation et de datation des évènements tectoniques et sismiques à travers l'analyse des failles décrochantes tardives et des enregistrements spéléologiques n'ont pas permis d'apporter de nouvelles données sur la néotectonique du Jura. Cependant la combinaison des données et observations géomorphologiques, géophysiques et géodésiques confrontée aux données des précédentes études nous permets de proposer un modèle de répartition de la déformation dans le système orogénique Alpes occidentales-Jura. Today, one of the main challenges in the oil industry, especially during the exploration phase, is the exploitation of new resources in structurally complex areas such as naturally fractured reservoirs, salt diapirs, mountain ranges, and unconventional reservoirs.We know that the geometry and sliding along active faults modifies the local stress distribution. Knowing the present day perturbed stress field is important for the study of earthquakes, for the planning of the borehole drilling and stability as well as for the prediction of fractures induced by hydro-fracturing and reactivation of natural fractures. In the other side, perturbed paleostress are responsible for the development of (pre-existing) natural fractures. The detection and modeling of the latter, are essential both in the oil industry (migration and trapping of fluids) for a cost efficient recovery of natural reserves.Understanding and quantifying the spatial and temporal development of the stress distribution has a significant economic and environmental impact. The analysis of paleo-constraints was intuitively introduced first by Anderson (1905 & 1942), then in the middle of the last century, Wallace (1951) and Bott (1959) proposed the simple hypothesis that (i) The stress field is homogeneous in space and constant in time, and that (ii) the slip direction is parallel to the traction projected on the fault plane which gives the direction of the shear stress. Many stress inversion methods are based on this hypothesis while recent studies raise doubts as to their compatibility with rock mechanics.In order to investigate the validity of the Wallace and Bott hypothesis, a comparison with vectors of slip generated with numerical models (BEM) is performed. By testing the influence of multiple parameters (geometry, boundary conditions, friction, Poisson’s coefficient , half-space, fault fluid pressure), it is shown that the complex geometry faults subject to specific boundary conditions can yield slip vectors with significant discrepancies with the maximum shear stress resolved on the fault plane. Conversely, the presence of a high sliding friction, allows under certain conditions, to validate the hypothesis of Wallace and Bott.We then focus on the task to compare the results of stress inversions based on the assumption of Wallace and Bott (called classical stress inversion methods) to a geomechanical method. For this, a complex fault geometry is used in a sensitivity analysis (boundary conditions, friction, sampling) to evaluate the uncertainty of the results of the two inversion methods. This analysis is then compared to a case study, Chimney Rock (Utah, USA), showing the advantages and disadvantages of the classical stress inversion methods.One of the main challenges of the oil industry is the exploitation of resource in structurally complex oil fields such as naturally fractured reservoirs. Knowing the heterogeneous paleostress allows to optimize the modeling of these natural fractures. Since slip on faults is hardly observed in petroleum reservoirs, fracture orientation data (joints, faults, stylolites) are naturally taken into account during the inversion of stresses. It is shown, using various field and industry examples, that in such cases the use of mechanical stress inversions is much more appropriate.However, it is sometimes difficult to determine the fracture kinematics observed along wellbores, and very often the studied regions underwent multiple tectonic phases. The final section aims to address the problem of data with unknown kinematic (joints, faults, stylolites ...) and expends the mechanical stress inversion to the separation of tectonic phases.; Aujourd’hui, l’un des principaux défis dans l’industrie pétrolière, et particulièrement dans le domaine de l’exploration, est l’exploitation des nouvelles ressources dans des zones structuralement complexes.Nous savons que la géométrie et le glissement le long des failles actives modifie la distribution locale des contraintes. La connaissance du champ de contrainte perturbé actuel est importante pour l’étude des tremblements de Terre, pour la planification de forages ainsi que pour la prédiction de la fracturation induite par l’hydro-fracturation et la prédiction de la réactivation des fractures. Les contraintes perturbées passées, quant à elles sont responsables du développement des fractures naturelles (préexistantes). La détection et la modélisation de celles-ci sont essentielles tant dans le domaine pétrolier (migration et piégeage des fluides) pour une exploitation efficace et à moindre coût des réserves naturelles.Comprendre et quantifier le développement spatial et temporel de ces contraintes a un impact économique non négligeable. L'analyse des paléo-contraintes a été introduite dans un premier temps par Anderson (1905 & 1942) de manière intuitive, puis dans le milieu du siècle dernier, Wallace (1951) et Bott ( 1959) proposèrent les simples postulats que le champ de contrainte est homogène et que la direction du rejet est parallèle à la traction projetée sur le plan de faille. Beaucoup de méthodes d’inversion de contraintes reposent aujourd’hui sur ce principe.Afin d’étudier la validité de l’hypothèse Wallace et Bott, une comparaison avec les vecteurs de glissement générés à partir de modèles numériques (BEM) est effectuée. En testant l’influence de multiples paramètres (géométrie, contraintes au limites du modèle, friction, coefficient de poisson, demi-espace, pression de fluide dans la faille), il est montré que les failles à géométries complexes soumises à certaines contraintes aux limites peuvent engendrer des vecteurs glissements présentant des écarts important avec les la plus grande contraintes cisaillantes résolue sur le plan de faille. A l’inverse, la présence d’une forte friction de glissement permet, dans certaines conditions, de valider l’hypothèse de Wallace et Bott. On s’attache ensuite à comparer les résultats des inversions de contraintes basées sur l’hypothèse de Wallace et Bott (appelé méthode d’inversion classique de contraintes) avec une méthode géomécanique. Pour cela, une faille à géométrie complexe est utilisée dans une étude de sensibilité (contraintes aux limites, friction, échantillonnage) permettant d’analyser l’incertitude des résultats des deux méthodes d’inversion. Cette analyse est ensuite confrontée à l’étude d’un cas de terrain, montrant les avantages et inconvénients des méthodes d’inversions classiques de contraintes.Un des principaux défis de l’industrie pétrolière est l’exploitation des ressources des zones structuralement complexes telles que les réservoirs naturellement fracturés. Connaitre l’état de contraintes hétérogène passé permet d’optimiser la modélisation de ces fractures naturelles. Etant donné que les glissements sur les failles sont difficiles à observer dans les réservoirs pétroliers, les données de d’orientation de fractures (joints, failles, stylolites) sont naturellement prises en compte lors de l’inversion des contraintes. On montre, en utilisant divers exemples de terrain et d’industrie, que dans de tels cas, l’utilisation d’inversions basée sur la mécanique est beaucoup plus appropriée. Cependant, il est parfois difficile de déterminer le type cinématique de fracture observée le long des puits, et très souvent, les zones étudiées ont subi une tectonique polyphasée. La dernière partie vise donc à résoudre le problème des données de types cinématiques non identifiables (joints, failles, stylolites…) et étend parallèlement l’inversion mécanique des contraintes à la séparation de phases tectoniques.

This work focus on the characterization of the source and dynamic of compactional fluids during sedimentary burial, through two complementary examples of late orogenic oil-field half-grabens: The exhumed Lodève Permian Basin and a deep buried Jurassic basin in the North Viking Graben (North Sea).Constituting the main part of the thesis, a multi-disciplinary approach was conducted in the Lodève Basin where Ba-F-Cu-Pb polymetalic mineralized systems are trapped into synrift faults and paleokarsts in the carbonate basement at the hinge point of the roll-over. The source, timing and P/T conditions of fluid migration were deduced from the analysis of the microfabric, the fluid inclusions microthermometry, and the isotopic (Sr, S, O, H) and Rare Earth Element (REE) signature. Results are then crossed with a structural and thermal modeling that consolidates the sequence and dynamics of fluid during burial.A similar approach was conducted in the North Viking Graben where fluid markers are restricted to 3D seismic and well core data. Comparable Ba-Pb-Zn veins are reported in basin margin, plugging one of the most important siliciclastic hydrocarbon reservoir in the substratum. This analysis provides additional constraints on basinal fluid behavior and allows us to propose a global dynamic model for various compositions of fluids and reservoirs.We conclude to a polyphase fluid sequence history including:(a) In the carbonate basement of the Lodève Basin, karstic paleocanyon incisions and associated cavities coupled to synrift fault, act as major drain for fluids. These structures are early affected by hypogen-sulfuric karstification in response to the interaction between bacterial oxidation of sulfides entrapped within Lower Permian blackshales and the basement oxidizing aquifer.(b) Disequilibrium compaction initiates overpressure-driven basinal fluid migration towards basin margins, characterized by temperatures around 150-180°C and salinities between 9 et 18wt%eq.NaCl. Isotopic (Sr, S, O) and REE analyses reveal that Ba-M+-rich mineralizing fluids derived mainly from buried blackshales diagenesis. External Fluids coming from the lower crust are also identified that play a key role in fluorite precipitation by the leaching of late hercynian granites (mean temperature of 250°C and salinity > 20wt%eq.NaCl).(c) During the synrift period, fluid overpressure is responsible for the periodic reactivation of fault plane according to seismic-valve process, bedded-control shearing and hydraulic brecciation at the basement-seal interface. These mechanisms induce cyclic polymetallic mineralization by the mixing between in situ formation water and deep ascending basinal fluids.(d) Thermogenic fluids expulsion starts with last basinal fluids during late burial stage. Hydrocarbons thus migrate along the same regional pathways up to the rollover crest, where they are partly rerouted by the previous mineralized baffle.(e) In the Lodève basin, post-rift exhumation of the margins led to the remobilization of synrift deposits by subaerial biochemical processes at the sulfate-methane transition. The latter results from the interaction between the still active hydrocarbon dysmigration with a playa lake sulfate-rich aquifer. Secondary low-temperature barite fronts precipitate then within basement meteoric karsts.In addition to the « source to sink » model of basinal fluids, this work provides new insights on the early plugging of hydrocarbon reservoirs and for the metallogenesis of Mississippi Valley-Type deposits.; Ce travail porte sur la caractérisation de la source et de la dynamique des fluides de bassin au cours de leur chargement à travers deux exemples complémentaires de demi-grabens tardi-orogéniques pétroliers : le Bassin Permien de Lodève, aujourd'hui à l'affleurement et un bassin jurassique enfouis dans le North Viking Graben (Mer du Nord). Le cœur de la thèse concerne le Bassin de Lodève où, à partir d'une approche pluridisciplinaire intégrée, nous avons caractérisé l'architecture des minéralisations (Ba, F, Cu, Pb) piégées dans un réseau paléokarstique alimenté par les failles syn-rift, dans le substratum carbonaté à l'apex du roll-over. La source, le calendrier et les conditions de migration des fluides ont été approchés à partir de l'analyse de la micro-fabrique, la microthermométrie sur inclusions fluides, les analyses isotopiques (Sr, S, O, H) et de Terres Rares. Les résultats analytiques ont été enfin croisés avec un modèle thermique et structural du bassin qui conforte la séquence et la dynamique du système fluide en cours d'enfouissement. Une démarche similaire, mais plus limitée, a été conduite dans le bassin du North Viking Graben où l'accès aux marqueurs fluides est restreint aux données de sismique 3D et de carottes. Comme à Lodève, les minéralisations Ba-Pb-Zn colmatent un réservoir dans le substratum à l'apex du roll-over. Elles se présentent sous forme de ciments dans des grès ou des fractures. Cette analyse apporte des contraintes complémentaires et permet de proposer un modèle dynamique général avec des variantes en fonction de la nature des fluides et des réservoirs. On retiendra donc la séquence fluide suivante :(a) Dans le cas du bassin de Lodève sur substratum carbonaté, les chemins préférentiels de drainage se développent dans des paléocanyons N-S couplés à un réseau de fractures et d'endokarsts météoriques. Ces derniers sont élargis en début de rifting par la dissolution hypogène sulfurique produite par l'oxydation bactérienne de la pyrite des blackshales, au contact de l'aquifère oxydant du Cambien.(b) Le déséquilibre de compaction initie la migration des fluides interstitiels en surpression vers les marges avec des températures autour de 150-180°C et des salinités entre 9 et 18wt%eq.NaCl. Les analyses isotopiques (Sr, S, O) révèlent que la majorité des fluides provient de l'altération diagénétique des blackshales riches en métaux. Des interactions sont également mises en évidence avec des fluides profonds (entre 240°C et 260°C ; salinités > à 20wt%eq.NaCl), qui lessivent les granites tardi-hercyniens.(c) Pendant le syn-rift, les conditions de surpression de fluide permettent la réactivation cyclique des failles, les décollements stratigraphiques et la formation de brèches hydrauliques, favorisant la mise en connexions avec les réservoirs superficiels à l'apex du roll-over. Le modèle de Sibson ajusté aux fluides de bassins est alors le moteur de la migration verticale.(d) Les fluides thermogéniques commencent à être expulsés avec les derniers fluides de compaction au cours d'un stade plus évolué de l'enfouissement en empruntant les mêmes chemins jusqu'à l'apex du roll over. Ils sont alors partiellement freinés et déviés par les colmatages minéralisés antérieurs.(e) A Lodève, la continentalisation des minéralisations antérieures au cours de l'exhumation post-rift conduit à leur remaniement partiel au niveau de la transition sulfate-méthane induite par l'interaction entre une playa évaporitique et la dysmigration des hydrocarbures. Des barytines secondaires de basse température, déprimées en Sr sont alors précipitées de manière synsédimentaire dans des karsts météoriques du socle. Outre l'illustration d'un modèle complet (source to sink) de dynamique des fluides dans un bassin, ce travail apporte de nouvelles contraintes dans l'approche du colmatage des réservoirs à hydrocarbures sur les têtes de blocs basculés et sur la genèse des gîtes miniers de type Mississippi Valley-Type.

La Cuenca Oriente Ecuatoriana representa un extraordinario sistema natural, cuya armonía permea desde lo más profundo de su subsuelo, hasta la explosión de vida vegetal y animal que se desarrolla sobre un suelo, cuya morfología se caracteriza por relieves relativemente importantes con respecto a las demás cuencas de ante-país andinas. La alta densidad de información de subsuelo de la Cuenca Oriente, así como la presencia de afloramientos relativamente buenos en su margen occidental, han permitido desarrollar en el cuadro del convenio IRD PETROPRODUCCION varios estudios, a fin de precisar su marco estructural y su evolución geodinámica, conomientos indispensables para guiar las estrategias de exploración y de producción de hidrocarburos. Esto libro es una síntesis de los resultados geológicos obtenidos a partir de varios artículos escritos sobre la temática de la Cuenca Oriente, una parte de estos ya publicados y aprobados por la comunidad científica internacional. Aquí, se presenta una propuesta que intenta explicar, a la luz de los nuevos antecedentes encontrados, los procesos y elementos de la Cuenca Oriente, desde el Precretácico hasta el Presente, y en temas tan diversos como la caracterización del sistema petrolero, de la hidrosedimentología, del volcanismo y de la morfología, que son en su conjunto lo que nos entrega una mejor visión geodinámica y comprensión de la cuenca. Dada la importancia socio-económica de la actividad hidrocarburífera, se recrea el desarrollo histórico de la exploración petrolera de la cuenca, desde el conocimiento inicial de manaderos de crudo, hasta la etapa de madurez actual, con alrededor de 30 mil millones de barilles de petróleo en sitio, acumulados en más de cien campos descubiertos. Se presenta finalmente las características geológicas generales de los principales campos de Petroproducción.

The contribution of landslides to the Quaternary evolution of relief is poorly documented in arid contexts. In southern Peru and northern Chile, several massive landslides disrupt the arid western Andean front. The Chuquibamba landslide, located in southern Peru, belongs to this set of large landslides. In this area, the Incapuquio fault system captures the intermittent drainage network and localizes rotational landslides. Seismic activity is significant in this region with recurrent Mw 9 subduction earthquakes; however, none of the latest seismic events have triggered a major landslide. New terrestrial cosmogenic dating of the Chuquibamba landslide provides evidence that the last major gravitational mobilization of these rotational landslide deposits occurred at ~ 102 ka, during the Ouki wet climatic event identified on the Altiplano between 120 and 98 ka. Our results suggest that wet events in the arid and fractured context of the Andean forearc induced these giant debris flows. Finally, our study highlights the role of tectonics and climate on (i) the localization of large Andean landslides in the Western Cordillera and on (ii) the long-term mass transfer to the trench along the arid Andean front.

National audience; En France, les bassins sédimentaires permo-carbonifères affleurent localement en étroite relation cartographique avec les grands domaines varisques (Massif Armoricain, Massif Central, Vosges). Ces bassins, principalement considérés comme des bassins intra-montagneux mis en place en contexte post-orogéniques à la fin de l'orogenèse varisque, se sont développés à la suite d'événements tectoniques d'échelle crustale et/ou lithosphérique (e.g. détachements). Par opposition, nous avons peu d'information sur leur présence en subsurface sous leur couverture sédimentaire post-dépôt. C'est par exemple le cas dans le sud-ouest bassin de Paris, où seulement quelques études régionales se sont appliquées depuis le milieu du XX ème siècle à préciser leur position sous la couverture sédimentaire mésozoïque. Notre approche se base sur l'interprétation d'environ 1480 km profils sismiques retraités par nos soins et acquis dans la région Centre par l'industrie pétrolière dans les années 80. Pour la première fois, (1) nous sommes capables d'aborder de manière détaillée la géométrie de ces bassins, sur la base d'une compilation des données de forages, de l'interprétation de surfaces géologiques choisies, de l'agencement des géométries internes aux grands ensembles sédimentaires, et de leurs faciès sismiques; (2) nous avons identifié plusieurs familles de failles en fonction de leur direction et de leur période d'activité relative, en relation avec le schéma structural régional tardi-varisque (importance de l'activité tectonique décrochante); (3) nous proposons une cartographie structurale détaillée de ces bassins tout en discutant de leur mode de mise en place; (4) nous avons calculé des cartes d'épaisseur en temps et en profondeur de ces bassins, ce qui nous permet d'obtenir une pseudo-vue 3D des différents dépocentres (bassins d'Arpheuilles, de Contres et de Brécy); (5) nous avons enfin estimés la phase de soulèvement pré-triasique enregistrée par ces bassins (soit environ 1500 m), phase scellée par l'arrivée des premiers dépôts sédimentaires du Trias. Comme nous le montrons par cette étude, ces objets géologiques mal connus (sur lesquels les dernières études spécifiques datent des années 80) ont encore beaucoup à nous apprendre sur la période de transition entre la fin du cycle orogénique varisque à la fin du paléozoïque et le début du cycle sédimentaire mésozoïque; sans compter leur possibles applications industrielles.

Lineaments identification is performed from; a SAR image of Radarsat-1, recorded in January 2001. Results have shown a high intensity of fracturation, with a complex spatial pattern. Such results could be used for a better understanding of underground water flows.; Cette étude a pour objectif d'analyser à partir de méthodes statistiques et géostatistiques le réseau de fractures de la région d'Oumé. L'extraction des linéaments de la zone d'étude a été faite à partir d'une scène RSO de Radarsat-1, prise en janvier 2001. Les résultats ont mis en évidence une structuration importante et une géométrie complexe du réseau de fractures. Ces résultats pourraient être utilisés pour la compréhension et la modélisation des écoulements souterrains.

The present-day crustal structure of the Andean chain results from deformation processes and magmatic activity since the onset of subduction. One line of investigation to resolve questions about the mechanism of crustal thickening is to get information about the composition of the crust and upper-mantle by imaging the structures in velocity and Poisson's ratio (or Vp/Vs). A high density seismic network was operated during six months in 1994 across the whole Andean chain. The P and S travel times of the best located local earthquakes, mainly situated in the subduction zone, have been inverted for Vp and Vp/Vs using Thurber's 3D iterative simultaneous inversion method. The resulting models, giving short-scale information about the crustal and upper-mantle composition, provide new limits on the respective involvement of crustal shortening and magmatism in the thickening of the Andean crust. Beneath the Western Cordillera, the seismic properties are well explained by typical active volcanic arc processes, and the thickening of the crust is explained by magmatic addition. Conversely, beneath the Central Altiplano Basin and the Eastern Cordillera, our results preclude significant volume of magmatic addition from the mantle and reinforce crustal shortening as the main thickening process. Moreover, cratonic lower crust and subcontinental lithospheric upper-mantle are observed under the Eastern Cordillera up to 67°W, evidence of the underthrusting of the Brazilian craton, which drives the crustal shortening. Beneath the Central Altiplano Basin, a thin lithospheric mantle is observed above a well marked asthenospheric wedge which extends in depth below the western part of the Eastern Cordillera. Thus partial melt is observed in the shallow mantle west of the Western Cordillera up to the Brazilian craton.

Arrival-times of local events recorded in northern Chile and southern Bolivia were used to determine the P velocity structure above the subducted Nazca plate. The data were recorded between June and November 1994 by the French “Lithoscope” network: 41 vertical and 14 three-component short-period seismic stations were installed along a 700 km long profile crossing the main structures of the Andean chain, from the Coastal Cordillera to the Subandean Zone. The inversion method used is a modified version of Thurber’s 3D iterative simultaneous inversion code. The results were compared with a model obtained from previous German nearby refraction seismic studies and supplemented by field geological observations. The relocated seismicity is consistent with an ∼30° dipping slab between 0 and 170 km depth. We found a variation of about 30 km of the Moho depth along the profile. The crustal thickness is about 47 km under the Coastal Cordillera, 70 km under the Western Cordillera and the western part of the Eastern Cordillera, and 60–65 km beneath the Altiplano. Close to the surface, a good agreement between the velocity model and the geological structures is observed. Generally, in the upper crust, high velocities coincide with zones where basement is present near the surface. Low velocities are well correlated with the presence of very thick sedimentary basins or volcanic material. At greater depth, the trend of the velocity model is consistent with the existence of asymmetrical west-dipping imbricated blocks, overthrusting toward the east, which explain the asymmetrical pattern of the sedimentary basins. Beneath the Western Cordillera, the active volcanic arc, a large zone of low velocity is observed and interpreted to be due to partially molten material. A clear velocity contrast appears between the western and eastern parts of the upper mantle beneath the Andes; this geometry suggests the existence of a low velocity wedge in the mantle above the slab and the presence of a thick old lithosphere in the eastern part of the Andes.

Within the framework of the joint FAUST (French Australian Seismic: Transect) program, the Australian research vessel Rig-Seismic recorded a series of multichannel seismic profiles between the New Hebrides Arc and the Australian Margin. The very high quality of these profiles allows the examination of the continental or oceanic basement over the whole area surveyed. In basins beneath the eastern margin of the northern Lord Howe Rise and the New Caledonia Basin, where the crust is thinner, the Moho discontinuity is present at about 8.5 seconds two-way time (TWT) (about 12–13 km) on the profiles processed onboard. The data collected suggest that the sedimentary section within the basins includes syn-rift Cretaceous sediments that are not yet definitively identified. The Upper Eocene-Middle Oligocene subduction of the Australian plate beneath the Pacific plate is highlighted by thrust faults concentrated along the Lord Howe, Norfolk and Fairway Ridges. This episode probably corresponds to the period of convergent tectonism associated with the Upper Eocene obduction of the New Caledonian ophiolites.

The Panama Isthmus is located on the SW boundary of the Caribbean plate, at the junction of the South American, Nazca and Cocos plates. The isthmus is composed of two island arcs forming Central America. It formed by a complex history of plate subductions. The major tectonic event in this region is attributed to the accretion of Central America with South America between 12 and 25 Ma. The aim of this thesis is to document the deformation before, during and after the accretionary continental process. The main purpose is to better understand how a volcanic arc collides against a continental margin in order to reconstruct the tectonic history of this region since 70 Ma until today. This thesis combines: - a sedimentological and paleontological studies, - a structural study from spatial, geophysical and field work data, - a thermochronological study (AFT), - and an interpretative seismic study. I propose the initiation of progressive and oblique arc-continent collision during 40-37 Ma. The Caribbean plate, trapped between the arc and the continent, progressively disappeared beneath the South American continent. Around 15 Ma, the Colombian part of Central America was accreted and the convergence of Panama toward the continent progressed and produced a new subduction zone whereby the Caribbean plate subducted beneath the Panama Isthmus. Compressive deformations, caused by the collision, still actively control the migration of sedimentary masses, allowing the progressive emergence of the isthmus and forming the inter-American land bridge.; L'isthme de Panama se situe en bordure SW de la plaque Caraïbe, à la jonction de trois plaques lithosphériques: les plaques Amérique du Sud, Nazca et Cocos. Cet isthme est constitué de deux arcs volcaniques formant l'Amérique Centrale. Leurs présences reflètent une histoire complexe de convergence, en subduction. L'événement majeur de cette région correspond à la collision de l'Amérique Centrale contre l'Amérique du Sud entre 12-25 Ma. L'objectif de cette thèse est de documenter les déformations avant, pendant et après le processus d'accrétion continentale. Le but est de mieux comprendre comment un arc volcanique s'accrète sur une marge continentale pour reconstruire l'histoire géodynamique de cette région de 70 Ma jusqu'à nos jours. Cette thèse combine: - une étude sédimentologique et paléontologique, - une étude structurale à partir de données spatiales, géophysiques, et de terrain, - une étude thermochronologique (AFT), - et une étude interprétative sismique. Je propose ainsi une accrétion progressive et oblique de l'Amérique Centrale sur l'Amérique du Sud, s'initiant au sud de la région d'Istmina à partir de 40-37 Ma. La plaque Caraïbe, piégée entre l'arc volcanique et la marge continentale sud-américaine, disparaît progressivement sous l'Amérique du Sud. Vers 15 Ma, l'accrétion de l'arc dans la partie colombienne se termine. Au Panama, la convergence continentale se poursuit, mais le système s'inverse. Une nouvelle subduction s'initie : la plaque Caraïbe subducte sous l'isthme. Les déformations compressives engendrées par l'accrétion contrôlent la migration des masses sédimentaires et permettent la surrection progressive de l'isthme créant le pont inter-Amériques.

This study illustrates the importance of undertaking a multi-scale geological approach when assessing ophiolites which may contain harmful asbestos. A case history from an active quarry in the Carinthia region of Austria is presented. The data obtained indicated four main zones within the heterogeneous rock mass. The study identified those horizons which could be used for commercial purposes, notably railway ballast and road sub-base. Extensive testing was undertaken which confirmed that asbestiform amphiboles were not present in the quarry. Attention is drawn to the ambiguities in current legislation regarding the presence of asbestos. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

The evolution of the Cenozoic deformation of the Cordillera Oriental and of the contact zone with the Altiplano in southern Bolivia is well documented in the Tupiza, Nazareno and Estarca basins. The tectonic evolution started at about 29 Ma. The period between 29 and about 22-21 Ma is marked by developement of a pull-apart basin related to N-S trending left-lateral strike-slip faulting. During this period, initial deposition consisted of andesitic lavas and detrital sediments (breccias ; matrix-supported red conglomerats ; sands and silts...) of the Catati and Tupiza Formation, deposited in alluvial fan and flood plain environments. From 21 to 20 Ma, the tectonic setting evolved to N-S oriented thrusts, which had a dextral component. This event caused the Tupiza basin to evolve into a full-ramp basin, and triggered the developement of two piggy-back basins : Nazareno and Estarca. Both basins record detrital deposition (Nazareno Formation) in an alluvial fan environment. At 10-9 Ma, deformation in this area stopped allowing peneplanation during which time the San Juan de Oro erosional surface was formed and the fluvial conglomerates of the Oploca Formation were deposited. This segment of the Andes was then tectonically transported to the east, while uplift due to thrusting continued in the eastern Andean front and in the Subandean zone. (Résumé d'auteur)

New bathymetric and geophysical data were collected in the region east of the island of Malaita during the SOPACMAPS II cruise of the French research vessel L'Atalante. This region, part of the Malaita Anticlinorium was interpreted as a piece of oceanic crust from the Ontong Java Plateau obducted over the old Solomon Islands arc during collision between the Pacific and Australian plates. It has been generally accepted that convergent motion between the Australia and Pacific plates since the Late Miocene was absorbed exclusively along the San Cristobal trench, southwest of the Solomon Islands Arc. Bathymetry, imagery, and geophysical data (magnetism, gravity, seismic) acquired during the SOPACMAPS II survey allow us to classify the successive parallel ridges mapped within the region as being recent volcanic, oceanic crust, or deformed sedimentary ridges. Seismic profiling provides evidence of successive compressive events along the Malaita margin caused by the relative motion between the Solomon Islands and the Pacific plate. The main phase of convergence probably occurred during Oligocene-early Miocene time, but some relative motion between the two domains are still being absorbed along the East Malaita boundary. The existence of active faulting in the sedimentary cover throughout the region and the present-day deformation of the outer sedimentary ridge is a good illustration of this phenomenon. The velocity structure in the crest beneath the central Andes of northern Bolivia is obtained by the simultaneous inversion of local earthquake arrival-time data for velocity and hypocentral parameters. The data were recorded between October 1990 and February 1991 by the French "Lithoscope" network; the 34 vertical, short-period seismic stations were installed along a 320-km-long profile crossing two main morphological units of the Andean chain; the Altiplano and the Eastern Cordillera. The arrival times of seismic waves generated by earthquakes located in the subduction zone of the Nazca plate underneath the South American plate were inverted using a modified version of Thurber's 3-D iterative simultaneous inversion code. The results are consistent with the inversion of teleseismic travel-time residuals from the same network and closely correlate with the mapped surface geological features. The Altiplano Basin is characterized by a low-velocity zone down to 20 km, enclosed by the San Andres and Laurani faults. At the surface, the Cordillera Real fault zone (CRFZ) bounds to the west the high P-wave velocity anomaly lying under the axial zone of the Eastern Cordillera. The velocity discontinuity dips steeply to the southwest, to the bottom of the crust. From the velocity model, the depth of the Moho is estimated to be 66 km under the Altiplano. Moreover, the different behaviour of P- and S-waves found below the Western Cordillera and above the slab is consistent with the presence of partially melted asthenosphere that may be responsible for the magmatic activity. Finally, the seismicity defines, between 90 and 225 kin, a part of the slab dipping to the north-northeast with a low angle of about 30 ° .

Large-scale accretionary and collisional crustal orogenic architecture is studied combining structural geology, lithostratigraphy, geochronology and magmatic petrology with gravity, magnetic and seismic data. This multidisciplinary approach allows characterizing the structure and composition of the orogenic crust in two accretionary-collisional systems. The Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) constituting one third of the Asia continent and the Bohemian Massif are two Palaeozoic orogens formed by accretion followed by collision. It is proposed that the CAOB formed by successive Paleozoic accretion of oceanic and continental fragments followed by a late Palaeozoic to early Mesozoic N-S convergence of North Chinese and Siberian Cratons. The comparison between the potential fields and the geological data reveals an incorrect compartmentalization into different lithostratigraphic terranes. In contrast to geology the geophysical approach allows the analysis of the crustal structures on a complete thickness of crustal column. This thesis presents a compilation of geological data combined with unique gravity and magnetic results which are integrated into a preliminary model for the architecture of the continental crust. Conversely, an important collection of complementary data is available for the Bohemian Massif, allow more precise 3D geophysical forward modeling. In this area, geophysical data reveal the occurrence of an allochtonous lower crustal layer with a felsic composition. This indicates that the Variscan orogenic crust actually resulted from the accretion of contrasted crustal fragments., L’architecture crustale d’orogènes d’accrétion et de collision à grande échelle est étudiée en combinant géologie structurale, litho-stratigraphie, géochronologie et pétrologie magmatique avec les données gravimétriques, magnétiques et sismiques. Cette approche pluridisciplinaire permet de caractériser la structure et la composition de la croûte orogénique dans deux systèmes d’accrétion-collision : la Ceinture Orogénique d’Asie Centrale (CAOC) et le Massif de Bohême. La CAOC représente près d’un tiers du continent asiatique actuel. Ce système orogénique s’est construit par une accrétion continue de matériel depuis le Paléozoïque jusqu’au début du Mésozoïque, suivie par une collision durant le Mésozoïque. La comparaison des champs de potentiels avec les données géologiques met en évidence une compartimentation erronée de l’orogène en unités litho-stratigraphiques. Par rapport à la géologie, la géophysique permet une analyse directe des structures de la croûte orogénique sur toute son épaisseur. Le travail de thèse présente une compilation de données géologiques et de traitements gravimétriques et magnétiques inédits, dont la modélisation préliminaire pour contraindre l’architecture de la croûte continentale est proposée. Le Massif de Bohême possède quant à lui un catalogue de données complémentaires plus conséquent, ce qui permet une modélisation géophysique 3D plus précise. Dans cette zone, les données géophysiques mettent en évidence l’existence d’une croûte inférieure allochtone de composition felsique. A Sea Beam survey of an area located west of the Fiji Islands in the North Fiji Basin, between 17°10′S and 18°S and 175°40′E and 176°40′E, shows a complex structure characterized by two deep grabens bounding a central plateau. In previous papers, we interpreted this area as an intraoceanic strike-slip deformation zone, rejecting the possibility of oceanic spreading in the area. By comparison with the structures observed in the Galapagos 95.5° W area, we now reinterpret the area as a southward propagating spreading system. The analysis of structural and magnetic data and earthquake focal mechanisms confirms this new interpretation. The full spreading rate for the North Fiji Basin ridge, deduced from magnetic lineations, varies from 50 to 80 mm/yr. For the West Fiji spreading ridge, the magnetic anomaly analysis gives a spreading rate of about 50 mm/yr for the northern segment and slightly slower (40 mm/yr) for the southeastern segment. Using a 50 mm/yr spreading rate, the angles between the pseudofaults allow us to calculate the propagation velocity. For an angle of 75° north of 17°35′S, the propagation velocity is 33 mm/yr. The tip of the propagator is characterized by a 20° angle between the pseudofaults, which implies a recent increase of propagation velocity to 141 mm/yr. The initiation of this propagation could be related to the emplacement of the North Fiji fracture zone 1 to 1.5 m.y. ago, resulting in the formation of the 16°50′S triple junction. The main kinematic implication of the existence of a propagating rift west of the Fiji Islands is that in the North Fiji Basin the present-day accretion is distributed on two parallel active spreading ridges, one in the central part of the basin, the other one in its southeastern quadrant. Such a phenomenon, unusual on mid-oceanic ridges, except for microplates such as Galapagos, Easter and Juan Fernandez, may be more common in marginal basins because of their peculiar geodynamic setting.

6 pages, 4 figures, During the SOPACMAPS 2 crusie carried out by IFREMER (Institut Français de Recherche pour l'Exploitation de la Mer) and ORSTOM (Institut Français de Recherche Scientifique pour le dévelopement en Coopération) on theR/V L'Atalante, in the Central Solomon Arc area, multibeam bathymetric and imagery data and single-channel seismic reflection profiles were collected from an area of about 3500 km2, to evaluate regional tectonics. Structural data geophysical profiles interpretation provide evidence for left-lateral transtensional tectonics on the southern edge of the Central Solomon Trough. This transtensional deformation is represented by faulting, block tilting, and rhombohedral deformation. The regional geology and the analysis of the sedimentary cover allow us to demonstrate that this tectonic occurred in two different phases during Oligocene to Miocene and Pliocene to Pleistocene times

The Los Azufres volcanic complex has had a long eruptive history of ∼ 1.5 Myr or more (less than 3 Myr), subsequent to the building of a large Miocene and Pliocene andesitic complex. Since about 1.5 Ma, its development consists of two main periods of volcanic activity. The first period, from ∼1.5 to 0.8 Ma, has two magmatic cycles, about 200,000 years in duration, characterized by acidic, followed basaltic volcanism. Such a magmatic evolution suggests successive emptyings of a shallow reservoir in which differentiation previously occurred. About 0.6 Ma, major deep magma supplies were probably responsible for the resurgent doming which led to uplift of the southern part of the caldera. From ∼0.6 Ma to Present, the second period exposes volcanic products grading from basalts to rhyolites. Considering the recent age of the last ignimbrites (26,000 to 29,000 years), one can assume that the volcanic activity related to a voluminous differentiated magma body at shallow depth has not yet ended, especially in the southern area, in and around the resurgent zone occupied by the geothermal field.

Laurent Jolivet est Professeur à l'Université d'Orléans au 1er Septembre 2009; International audience; We describe structural data from a 2000 km N-S dextral strike-slip zone extending from northern Sakhalin to the southeast corner of the Japan Sea. Satellite images, field data, and focal mechanisms of earthquakes in Sakhalin are included in the interpretation. Since Miocene time the deformation in Sakhalin has been taken up by N-S dextral strike-slip faults with a reverse component and associated en e'chelon folds. Narrow en échelon Neogene basins were formed along strike-sup faults and were later folded in a second stage of deformation. We propose a model of basin formation along extension al faults delimitating dominos between two major strike-slip faults, and subsequent counterclockwise rotation of the dominos in a dextral transpressional regime, basins becoming progressively oblique to the direction of maximum horizontal compression and undergoing shortening. The association of both dextral and compressional focal mechanisms of earthquakes indicates that the same transpressional regime still prevails today in Sakhalin. We present fault set measurements undertaken in Noto Peninsula and Yatsuo Basin at the southern end of the Sakhalin-East Japan Sea strike-slip zone. Early and middle Miocene formations recorded the same transtensional regime as observed along the west coast of NE Honshu. During the early and middle Miocene the strike-slip regime was transpressional to the north in Sakhalin and Hokkaido, and transtensional to the south along the west coast of NE Honshu as far as Noto Peninsula and Yatsuo basin. Dextral motion accommodated the opening of the Japan Sea as a pull-apart basin, with the Tsushima fault to the west. The opening of the Japan Sea ceased at the end of the middle Miocene when transtension started to change to E-W compression in the Japan arc. Subduction of the Japan Sea lithosphere under the Japan arc started 1.8 Ma ago. The evolution of the stress regime from transtensional to compressional in the southern part of the strike-slip zone is related to the inception of the subduction of the young Philippine Sea Plate lithosphere under the Japan arc during the late Miocene. Subduction related extension is a necessary condition for the opening of the Japan Sea. Two possible mechanisms can account for dextral shear in this area: (1) counterclockwise rotation of crustal blocks due to the collision of India with Asia, (2) extrusion of the Okhotsk Sea block squeezed between the North America and Eurasia plates.

The Quaternary evolution of western Amazon basins is considered using morphostructural analysis of fluvial belts and lakes. Meandering rivers from the basin surface are analyzed using three scales of elements: the ridge and swale pattern, the mosaic pattern and the fluvial belt. Lake patterns are differentiated according to their shape, the hydrological environment and the structural context. Influences of basement structures and neotectonic deformations, when known, are considered. The morphostructural patterns are discussed in the context of a balance of internal (tectonic) and external (hydraulic and sedimentologic) processes. Special attention is focussed on the effect of neotectonics, which is generally neglected, on the formation and the location of Quaternary morphostructures. The adaptation of study methods and sampling to the characteristics of the different morphostructures is considered.

The present day geometry of the North Fiji marginal basin, at the Pacific and Indo-Australian plate boundary, results from a polyphased tectonic evolution. Since the beginning of the opening, spreading occurred along several ridge axes that are characterized by highly variable trends. From 15°S to 21°40′S, the present day trends of the axis are mainly N20°W, N20°E and N-N5°E. The structural analysis of multi-beam echo sounder and seismic data combined with submersible observations (18 dives in this area) allow a precise study of relationships between the N-N5°E and N20°E axes near 18°30′S. Two main oceanic features occur in this area. The most striking one consists in a broad northward propagating rift of the N-N5°E spreading ridge. The northern tip of the propagator is located at 18°10′S, on 173°30′E and is characterized by a northern V-shaped end and a slight camber. The diving observations corroborate the present day magmatic and tectonic activities along the N-N5°E spreading axis located between 18°10′S and 20°30′S and its northward propagation to the detriment of the N20°E axis which is less active at its southern end. Moreover, the youngest axis trends, inside the N20°E axial domain, confirms this northward propagation of the N-N5°E structural trends. The N-N5°E spreading axis shows very close similarities with those of an intermediate to fast-spreading ridge, either in its morphology or in its spreading rate. On the other hand, the N20°E axis displays a large tectonically active overlapping arm, that is counterposed to the northern end of the N-N5°E propagating system. The transform zone between the two overlapping arms is characterized by typical oblique and curved structural patterns in the sea floor. The whole tectonic system constitutes thus a typical large overlapping spreading center. The average propagating rate is calculated at 5.7 cm/yr that is compatible with backward migration of the N20°E overlapping arm. This study confirms the high instability of the North Fiji Basin spreading system through time and space, due to the regional tectonic stress produced by the plate convergence and the double sphenochasmic opening of the basin.

Based on a synthesis of magnetic and bathymetric data, we re-evaluate the kinematics of the recent opening of the central part of the North Fiji Basin (NFB). The westward motion of the Pacific plate along the left-lateral North Fiji Fracture Zone (NFFZ) results in the opening of two N-S trending spreading ridges, located at 173°30′E and 176°E. Both ridges show complex features such as propagating rifts, ridge jumps and overlapping spreading centres. Their spreading rates are similar: 7.6 to 4 cm yr −1 across the western ridge, 5.5 cm yr −1 across the eastern one. While the NFFZ is purely strike-slip to the east of the eastern ridge, it becomes more complex to the west: it changes from transpressional to transtensional, then to purely transform and finally joins the western N-S ridge in a RRR-type triple junction. Our kinematic analysis shows that most of the left-lateral motion along the NFFZ is transferred to the eastern ridge at the RTF-type 176°E triple junction. It suggests that the western N-S ridge is probably connected to the north with another left-lateral transform, possibly the South Pandora “ridge”.

Geology and geochemistry of a 800 m section through young upper oceanic crust in the North Fiji Basin (Southwest Pacific). In: J.-M. Auzende and T. Urabe (Editors), North Fiji Basin: STARMER French-Japanese Program. Mar. Geol., 116: 113-132. We report the results of geological and structural observations made during one dive of the French submersible Nautile during the STARMER Cruise in 1989 in the vicinity of the 16”40’S triple junction in the North Fiji Basin. This dive provided a spectacular, 800 m continuous section of oceanic crust exposed along the northern wall of a 3000 m deep basin at the eastern branch of the triple junction. A number of volcanic facies have been encountered including massive and pillowed lavas, sheeted dikes and spectacular columnar-jointed massive lavas. Pillowed lavas have been observed only at the base and at the top of the section. The ratio between massive and pillowed basalts is high suggesting that the crust in this area grew mostly during a stage of high eruptive rate. Dikes have been observed in the middle part of the section. They probably do not represent the top of a classical “dike complex” but an isolated set of sheeted dikes, possibly the feeders of overlying flows. The abundance of vertical tectonic breccias observed during the first part of the dive confirms that the basal part of the wall can be regarded as a major tectonic boundary along which occurred significant vertical and strike-slip motions. Micropaleontological data from sedimentary rocks collected during the dive bring new constraints to the evolution of the triple junction. The oceanic crust in the surveyed area is at least as old as 1.9-1.3 Ma, based on the age of sedimentary rocks collected in talus at the base of the wall and observed at the summit of the section. The collected basalts include (1) N-type MORBs, (2) E-type MORBs and (3) BABBs. This emphasizes the heterogeneous nature of the mantle beneath the central NFB. Some portions of the depleted mantle underlying the central NFB triple junction area have recorded contamination from melts or fluids from an ancient subduction zone (probably .the New Hebrides during the opening of the NFB), whereas adjacent mantle areas show the influence from an alkali-enriched source. Such alkali-enriched characters are reported from recent basalts of the northern NFB (South-Pandora ridge-Rotuma island).

Rifting that produced the Jean Charcot Trough (JCT) in the Vanuatu back-arc region commenced 2–3 Ma, leading to SiO 2 -bimodal magmatism in the northern half of the trough. Dacite with high Na 2 O (>6.0%) and low K 2 O ( Zr Rb >10 , Nb Rb >0.5 , Y Rb >2.0 , Nb La >0.5 , and Ba Zr ), but are quite different to lavas from the active Vanuatu volcanic arc. The dacites are compositionally close to oceanic plagiogranite produced during fractional crystallization of an N-MORB basaltic magma, and mass balance calculations show that they may be similarly derived from the associated basalts. We show that JCT basalts are derived from a mantle source compositionally very close to that beneath the central spreading axis of the NFB, with minimal contamination by a subduction component. Westward injection of diapiritic source mantle similar to that of the NFB back-arc basin basalts may have caused rifting of the JCT. During incipient back-arc rifting, high Na/K felsic magmas may have evolved from parental low-K basalts via side-wall crystallization within a large lower crustal magma chamber.

Intracontinental tectonic processes acting during Variscan orogeny are explored using a combination of structural geology, metamorphic petrology and geochronology. This approach is applied to study different levels of the orogenic crust in two Variscan massifs − the OrlicaŚnieżnik Dome (Sudetes) and the Vosges Mountains (NE France) − in order to decipher their Palaeozoic evolution. During the Devonian, the activity of subduction zones may have locally triggered back-arc opening, but more importantly generated crustal thickening within an intracontinental setting. In both massifs, the orogenic crust was consequently formed by the welding of autochtonous and allochtonous portions. During the subsequent Devonian- Carboniferous collision, the orogenic system underwent a polyphase tectono-metamorphic evolution. In the early Lower Carboniferous, vertical material transfers were achieved through crustal-scale folding and led to the juxtaposition of the buried middle crust with the extruded lower crust. It was followed by a localized flattening event which produced a major intra-orogenic boundary zone at mid-crustal level. The presence of such a zone allowed deformation decoupling between the upper and lower crust, and also favoured exhumation of the system during later extensional reactivation. In the late Lower Carboniferous, exhumation was simultaneously accommodated by a ductile thinning mechanism which operated under a coaxial regime in the core of the orogen, and by the activity of highly noncoaxial detachment systems which developed towards the margins of the orogenic belt. In the Variscan framework, the evolution of the Sudetes appears to be controlled by the closure of the Saxothuringian basin. Conversely, the Vosges basement initially recorded the influence of the quasi-orthogonal subduction zones of the Saxothuringian basin and the Palaeotethys Ocean, and later documented closure of the Rhenohercynian basin. The processes recognized in this work finally suggest that the character of intracontinental tectonics has not significantly changed throughout the entire Phanerozoic., La tectonique intracontinentale de la chaîne hercynienne d'Europe est explorée en combinant géologie structurale, pétrologie métamorphique et géochronologie. Cette approche est appliquée à l'étude de différents niveaux de la croûte orogénique dans deux témoins hercyniens − le dôme d'Orlica-Śnieżnik (Sudètes) et les Vosges (NE France) − afin de reconstituer leur évolution paléozoïque. Au Dévonien, l'activité de zones de subduction peut localement aboutir à l'ouverture de bassins d'arrière-arc, mais génère essentiellement un épaississement crustal en domaine intracontinental. Dans les deux massifs, la croûte orogénique se forme alors par amalgamation de portions autochtones et allochtones. La collision dévono-carbonifère est ensuite responsable d'une évolution tectono-métamorphique polyphasée. Au début du Carbonifère inférieur, des transferts verticaux de matière s'opèrent grâce à un plissement d'échelle crustale et juxtaposent ainsi la croûte moyenne enfouie avec la croûte inférieure extrudée. Ce phénomène est remplacé par un aplatissement localisé conduisant à la formation d'une discontinuité intra-orogénique majeure au niveau de la croûte moyenne. Cette discontinuité va permettre un découplage total de la déformation entre croûte supérieure et croûte inférieure, et sa réactivation en régime extensif va favoriser l'exhumation de l'ensemble du système. A la fin du Carbonifère inférieur, l'exhumation est simultanément accommodée par un mécanisme d'amincissement ductile opérant en régime coaxial au coeur de l'orogène et par l'activité de systèmes de détachement fortement non-coaxiaux développés vers les bordures de la chaîne. Dans le cadre de l'orogenèse hercynienne, l'évolution des Sudètes paraît contrôlée par la fermeture du bassin saxothuringien situé au Nord. A l'inverse, le socle vosgien enregistre initialement l'influence des subductions quasi-orthogonales du bassin saxothuringien et de l'océan Paléotéthys avant de subir les effets de la fermeture du système rhénohercynien. Les processus reconnus dans ce travail suggèrent finalement que le caractère de la tectonique intracontinentale n'a que peu varié au cours du Phanérozoïque.
