Aim: Patterns of benthic biodiversity at the macroecological scale remain poorly characterised throughout the Chilean latitudinal gradient, in part due to the lack of integrated databases, uneven sampling effort, and the use of species richness alone to quantify biodiversity. Different diversity measures, encompassing taxonomic and functional components, may give us extra information on biodiversity relevant to conservation planning and management. Thus, evaluating the spatial complementarity of these measures is essential. Location: Coast and continental shelf of Chile. Methods: The latitudinal gradient of Chile was divided into five ecoregions according to the Marine Ecosystems of the World classification. Using a 55 × 55 km equal area grid, we estimated the incidence coverage‐based estimator (ICE), taxonomic distinctness (Δ+) and three measures of functional diversity: functional richness (FRic), functional evenness (FEve) and functional divergence (FDiv). For each measure, we described spatial patterns, identified hotspots, evaluated hotspot congruence and evaluated complementarity between measures. Results: Diversity patterns varied between ecoregions and over the latitudinal gradient. ICE and Δ+ peaked in the Chiloense and Channels and Fjords ecoregions. Δ+ and FRic present a similar pattern at mid‐latitudes. FEve showed a contrary pattern, principally with FRic. Areas with high numbers of hotspots differed spatially according to each metric, and three latitudinal bands were observed. ICE, Δ+ and FRic were positively correlated, but the hotspot overlap at the grid cell level was more limited. Main Conclusions: The complementarity between taxonomic and functional diversity measures is limited when we observe the overlap between grid cells representing hotspots. However, some regions are consistently identified as highly diverse, with the Magellanic Province (Chiloense and Channels and Fjords ecoregions) being the most important for the richness, taxonomic and functional diversity of benthos. Background and Aims The Greater Cape Floristic Region is one of the world's biodiversity hotspots and is considered poor in polyploids. To test this assumption, ploidy variation was investigated in a widespread Cape shrub, Dicerothamnus rhinocerotis (renosterbos, Asteraceae). The aim was to elucidate the cytotype distribution and population composition across the species range, and to assess differences in morphology, environmental niches and genetics. Methods Ploidy level and genome size were determined via flow cytometry and cytotype assignment was confirmed by chromosome counting. Restriction site-associated DNA sequencing (RADseq) analyses were used to infer genetic relationships. Cytotype climatic and environmental niches were compared using a range of environmental layers and a soil model, while morphological differences were examined using multivariate methods. Key Results The survey of 171 populations and 2370 individuals showed that the species comprises diploid and tetraploid cytotypes, no intermediates and only 16.8 % of mixed populations. Mean 2C values were 1.80–2.06 pg for diploids and 3.48–3.80 pg for tetraploids, with very similar monoploid genome sizes. Intra-cytotype variation showed a significant positive correlation with altitude and longitude in both cytotypes and with latitude in diploids. Although niches of both cytotypes were highly equivalent and similar, their optima and breadth were shifted due to differences mainly in isothermality and available water capacity. Morphometric analyses showed significant differences in the leaves and corolla traits, the number of florets per capitulum, and cypsela dimensions between the two cytotypes. Genetic analyses revealed four groups, three of them including both cytotypes. Conclusions Dicerothamnus rhinocerotis includes two distinct cytotypes that are genetically similar. While tetraploids arise several times independently within different genetic groups, morphological and ecological differences are evident between cytotypes. Our results open up new avenues for questions regarding the importance of ploidy in the megadiverse Cape flora, and exemplify the need for population-based studies focused on ploidy variation. Brazil's Atlantic Forest (BAF) is a highly fragmented, strategic environmental and socio-economic region that represents the fourth biodiversity hotspot while also producing many commodities that are exported globally. Human disturbance plays a pivotal role as a driver of BAF's soil dynamics and behaviors. The soils under Late Primary and Secondary Semideciduous Seasonal Forests (LPSF and LSSF) were characterized by high to moderate resilience, with improved chemical properties as human disturbance decreased. The Transitional Forest to Cerrado (TFC) had the worst soil conditions. Disturbed Primary and Secondary Semideciduous Seasonal Forests (DPSF and DSSF) represent a transitional stage between LPSF/LSSF and TFC. Accordingly, SOCs stocks increased from TFC << DPSF, DSSF < LPSF, LSSF. In BAF soils, to avoid unreliable data, SOCs measurements should be (i) conducted to at least 1 m soil depth and (ii) quantified with a CHN analyzer. Human disturbance strongly affected the positive feedback between vegetation succession, SOCs, and soil nutrition. Soil development decreased as human disturbance increased, thus negatively affecting SOCs. Soils in the BAF require a long time to recover after the end of human disturbance, thus suggesting that preservation strategies should be prioritized in remnant BAF fragments. Marine debris is a global issue with ecological, societal, and economic impacts, but its severity on southeastern North American beaches remains poorly understood. Abundance, composition, and distribution of meso- and macrodebris on St. Catherines Island, a protected barrier island off the coast of Georgia, were estimated in June 2021. The island's 19.4 km of beaches hold an estimated 5522 items (95% confidence interval = 4361–6457) of easily visible anthropogenic marine debris, with a total end-to-end length of 1.1 km (0.7–1.6 km). The N and S ends of the island were identified as plastic debris hot spots by comparing the distributions of anthropogenic and natural debris. Although average debris density (0.012 items m–2) was lower than most global and national averages, this study highlights the vulnerability of remote and undeveloped barrier islands as sinks for marine pollution. Aim: Glacial refugia are areas of primary importance for the evolution and conservation of biodiversity. Yet, their geographic location remains loosely defined even in intensively studied areas, preventing a thorough understanding of their role in the spatiotemporal biodiversity dynamics. With this study, we aim to locate the major glacial refugia within the biodiversity hotspot of the Italian peninsula, to understand the processes that warranted the long‐term persistence of biodiversity in the face of climate changes. Location: Italian peninsula. Taxon: Terrestrial vertebrates. Methods: We calibrated species distribution models (SDM) for 22 lineages of terrestrial vertebrates endemic to the Italian peninsula and projected the SDMs to the last‐glacial maximum conditions. Then, we combined single‐lineage projections to investigate the location and spatiotemporal dynamics of multi‐species glacial refugia. Results: Multi‐species refugia were mostly found in coastal areas that have been flooded by the post‐glacial marine transgressions, and that are currently below the sea level. Indeed, we identified six major areas acting as glacial refugia, mainly located outside the current coastline in the southern part of the peninsula and along the western coast. These areas were close to previously inferred locations of glacial refugia and genetic diversity hotspots, but none coincided with them. Conclusions: Results from this study outline glacial refugia as highly dynamic units. Most of the identified refugial areas have been lost by post‐glacial sea‐level rise. Accordingly, species persistence through the Late Pleistocene was not granted by long‐term environmental stability, but by the opportunity to shift species' distributions along altitudinal gradients, following changes in climate and habitat suitability. Notably, our results decouple glacial refugia from hotspots of genetic diversity. Thus, the current location of a hotspot should not be taken as evidence for the occurrence of a glacial refugium in that location—even though a refugium is likely to be located somewhere nearby. Our study encompasses the Oil Sands Area (OSA) within northern Alberta, Canada, which has experienced substantial environmental changes over the last decades, in association with natural and anthropogenic disturbances. Using composites of Landsat imagery for 5-year intervals between 2000 and 2020, we performed two parallel geospatial analyses to assess environmental changes, examining landscape metrics and spectral indices. Landscape metrics were calculated from land use/land cover maps derived from a Random Forest supervised classification. Spectral indices included Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Normalised Difference Built-up Index (NDBI), among others. Both hierarchical zonal analysis of spectral indices and zonal landscape metrics were calculated based upon two different aggregations of nested drainage basin features from hydrologic unit code (HUC - Watersheds of Alberta). Spatial contiguity of changes was evaluated by hotspot analysis. HUCs determined to experience significant changes at coarse aggregation level were examined at finer level. The combination of landscape metrics and zonal analysis provided evidence of substantial, yet localized, areas of changing trends. The Cyclades Islands (Aegean Sea, Greece) are part of the Mediterranean Basin biodiversity hotspot and harbor a plethora of endemic species. Plant communities on the smaller islands in this region have largely evolved in the absence of herbivory and frequently lack antiherbivore defenses. This study evaluates the short- and long-term effects of the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), an herbivore that has been released on numerous islands in the region, by comparing islands that 1. have historically been rabbit-free (ungrazed); 2. are currently grazed by rabbits, and 3. have previously been grazed, but are now rabbit-free. Ecological impacts of rabbits on the Aegean Islands were investigated by assessing the abundance, composition, and diversity of plant and arthropod communities as well as soil characteristics. Our results indicate that ungrazed islands have more arthropod species, more specialized or endemic plant species, and less exposed soil than currently grazed islands. While ungrazed islands did not necessarily possess higher total plant species richness, they did harbor significantly more small-island endemic taxa relative to presently grazed islands. This study indicates that native plant communities on Mediterranean islets are not adapted to the presence of this introduced species and that the practice of intentionally releasing rabbits on islands has significant and lasting negative ecological impacts, especially on small islands. While a complete recovery of post-rabbit was not evident over the time span of our research, both arthropod and plant data indicate that partial recovery is possible once rabbits have been removed. The Cambeva variegata group (CVG) is endemic to a region situated in the intersection of two endangered biodiversity hotspots, Cerrado and Atlantic Forest, and drained by two important South American river basins, the upper Rio Paraná and upper Rio São Francisco basins. Presently, CVG comprises two nominal species, besides some still undescribed. We first performed a molecular phylogenetic analysis (total of 3368 bp) for five species of the CVG and 30 outgroups, which supported the monophyly of the CVG and its inclusion in Cambeva. Most morphological character states distinguishing the CVG from congeners are also present in Scleronema, possibly consisting of plesiomorphic features. We also performed the first time-calibrated phylogeny of the group, which supported possible relationships between present geographical distribution patterns and palaeogeographical events. The estimated time of origin of CVG in the Middle Miocene is nearly contemporaneous to a past hydrographical configuration when part of the upper Rio Paraná basin was connected to the Rio São Francisco basin. The first CVG lineage split occurring in the Miocene end corresponds to a major break in that palaeo basin. Species diversification between the Pliocene and early Pleistocene is compatible with final drainage rearrangement. This study highlights the urgent need for more detailed studies on the diversity and phylogenetic relationships of still poorly known organisms in this highly diverse and threatened region. The Mediterranean Sea stands out as a hotspot of biodiversity, whose fungal composition remains underexplored. Marine sediments represent the most diverse substrate; however, the challenge of recovering fungi in culture hinders the precise identification of this diversity. Concentration techniques like skimmed milk flocculation (SMF) could represent a suitable solution. Here, we compare the effectiveness in recovering filamentous ascomycetes of direct plating and SMF in combination with three culture media and two incubation temperatures, and we describe the fungal diversity detected in marine sediments. Sediments were collected at different depths on two beaches (Miracle and Arrabassada) on the Spanish western Mediterranean coast between 2021 and 2022. We recovered 362 strains, and after a morphological selection, 188 were identified primarily with the LSU and ITS barcodes, representing 54 genera and 94 species. Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Scedosporium were the most common genera, with different percentages of abundance between both beaches. Arrabassada Beach was more heterogeneous, with 42 genera representing 60 species (Miracle Beach, 28 genera and 54 species). Although most species were recovered with direct plating (70 species), 20 species were exclusively obtained using SMF as a sample pre-treatment, improving our ability to detect fungi in culture. In addition, we propose three new species in the genera Exophiala, Nigrocephalum, and Queenslandipenidiella, and a fourth representing the novel genus Schizochlamydosporiella. We concluded that SMF is a useful technique that, in combination with direct plating, including different culture media and incubation temperatures, improves the chance of recovering marine fungal communities in culture-dependent studies. Mountain ranges are hotspots of biodiversity. However, the mechanisms that generate biodiversity patterns in different mountainous regions and taxa are not apparent. The Western Ghats (WG) escarpment in India is a globally recognized biodiversity hotspot with high species richness and endemism. Most studies have either invoked paleoclimatic conditions or climatic stability in the southern WG refugium to explain this high diversity and endemism. However, the factors driving macroevolutionary change remain unexplored for most taxa. Here, we generated the most comprehensive dated phylogeny to date for ranoid frogs in the WG and tested the role of paleoclimatic events or climatic stability in influencing frog diversification. We found that the diversity of different ranoid frog clades in the WG either accumulated at a constant rate through time or underwent a decrease in speciation rates around 3–2.5 Ma during the Pleistocene glaciation cycles. We also find no significant difference in diversification rate estimates across elevational gradients and the three broad biogeographic zones in the WG (northern, central, and southern WG). However, time-for-speciation explained regional species richness within clades, wherein older lineages have more extant species diversity. Overall, we find that global paleoclimatic events have had little impact on WG frog diversification throughout most of its early history until the Quaternary and that the WG may have been climatically stable allowing lineages to accumulate and persist over evolutionary time. Erosion is a powerful force that has moulded the Earth ever since water has been present on its rocky surface. In its seemingly harmless pursuit, erosion threatens ecosystems, reduces agricultural production, and impacts water quality. When trying to investigate erosion, there is no easy way to identify hotspots, only leaving the possibility of predicting where erosion should be occurring. This study aimed to develop a method to identify erosion using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images in a process called Coherent Change Detection (CCD). In doing so, it was found that CCD can be used to identify erosion due to rain events; however, false positives were also found due to soil moisture changes. This study used a new method for removing soil moisture effects that utilised the drying out of the soil to map where changes had occurred. This helped limit false positives, but more work is required to ensure soil moisture does not interfere with the results. Field data comprising aerial imagery and soil sampling were collected to improve the SAR processing as well as validate the results. The results of this study indicate the feasibility of developing an erosion analysis system capable of providing near real-time data specifically for arid regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Debris flows are geomorphological processes that affect the landscape evolution process of any region. In this study, an integrated methodology is proposed to identify the chance of further debris flows and quantify the similarities between debris flow locations, materials and rheology, using field and laboratory investigations and remote sensing data. The method was tested for four failure‐triggered debris flow sites in the Western Ghats of India, using dimensionless parametric similarity values ranging from 0 to 1. The maximum parametric similarity was observed as 0.84 when comparing the flow accumulation values of Sites 3 and 4, and the maximum overall site similarity was 0.68. The calibrated rheological parameters of one site were found to be satisfactory in modelling the shape of debris flow at all other sites. The findings can be used to identify similar hotspots in the region and to simulate debris flows for quantitative hazard assessment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Improving models of species' distributions is essential for conservation, especially in light of global change. Species distribution models (SDMs) often rely on mean environmental conditions, yet species distributions are also a function of environmental heterogeneity and filtering acting at multiple spatial scales. Geodiversity, which we define as the variation of abiotic features and processes of Earth's entire geosphere (inclusive of climate), has potential to improve SDMs and conservation assessments, as they capture multiple abiotic dimensions of species niches, however they have not been sufficiently tested in SDMs. We tested a range of geodiversity variables computed at varying scales using climate and elevation data. We compared predictive performance of MaxEnt SDMs generated using CHELSA bioclimatic variables to those also including geodiversity variables for 31 mammalian species in Colombia. Results show the spatial grain of geodiversity variables affects SDM performance. Some variables consistently exhibited an increasing or decreasing trend in variable importance with spatial grain, showing slight scale-dependence and indicating that some geodiversity variables are more relevant at particular scales for some species. Incorporating geodiversity variables into SDMs, and doing so at the appropriate spatial scales, enhances the ability to model species-environment relationships, thereby contributing to the conservation and management of biodiversity. Assessing the effectiveness of vegetation restoration along the Yangtze River shoreline and exploring its relationship with land use changes are imperative for providing recommendations for sustainable management and environmental protection. However, the impact of vegetation restoration post-implementation of the Yangtze River Conservation Project remains uncertain. In this study, utilizing Sentinel-2 satellite imagery and Dynamic World land use data from pre- (2016) and post- (2022) Yangtze River Conservation Project periods, pixel-based binary models, transition matrices, and geographically weighted regression models were employed to analyze the status and evolution of vegetation coverage along the Yangtze River shoreline. The results indicated that there had been an increase in the area covered by high and high-medium vegetation levels. The proportion of vegetation cover shifting to better was 4201.87 km2 (35.68%). Hotspots of vegetation coverage improvement were predominantly located along the Yangtze River. Moreover, areas witnessing enhanced vegetation coverage experienced notable land use changes, notably the conversion of water to crops (126.93 km2, 22.79%), trees to crops (59.93 km2, 10.76%), and crops to built area (59.93 km2, 10.76%). Notably, the conversion between crops and built area emerged as a significant factor influencing vegetation coverage improvement, with average regression coefficients of 0.68 and 0.50, respectively. The Maritime Continent (MC), a critical region for inter‐basin climate interaction, harbors the world's highest marine biodiversity. Ocean warming in the MC, although with notable impacts on regional climate and marine ecosystems, remains poorly constrained by observations. By applying a volume‐correction algorithm to existing gridded observational data sets, this study provides an estimate for the ocean heat content (OHC) change of the MC. The results suggest a substantial OHC increase of 2.65 ± 0.46 Zettajoules during 1990–2015 (1.08 ± 0.17 W m−2) and limited changes before and after. This increase primarily arose from the enhanced Pacific Walker circulation, which drove a convergence of upper‐layer warm water toward the MC. A potential heat storage "hotspot" with enhanced warming below 500 m emerges within the Sulu Sea, which is supported by analysis of profile data collected in boreal winter but not in other seasons. Accurate assessments of the historical and current status of eco-environmental quality (EEQ) are essential for governments to have a comprehensive understanding of regional ecological conditions, formulate scientific policies, and achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While various approaches to EEQ monitoring exist, they each have limitations and cannot be used universally. Moreover, previous studies lack detailed examinations of EEQ dynamics and its driving factors at national and local levels. Therefore, this study utilized a remote sensing ecological index (RSEI) to assess the EEQ of China from 2001 to 2021. Additionally, an emerging hot-spot analysis was conducted to study the spatial and temporal dynamics of the EEQ of China. The degree of influence of eight major drivers affecting EEQ was evaluated by a GeoDetector model. The results show that from 2001 to 2021, the mean RSEI values in China showed a fluctuating upward trend; the EEQ varied significantly in different regions of China, with a lower EEQ in the north and west and a higher EEQ in the northeast, east, and south in general. The spatio-temporal patterns of hot/cold spots in China were dominated by intensifying hot spots, persistent cold spots, and diminishing cold spots, with an area coverage of over 90%. The hot spots were concentrated to the east of the Hu Huanyong Line, while the cold spots were concentrated to its west. The oscillating hot/cold spots were located in the ecologically fragile agro-pastoral zone, next to the upper part of the Hu Huanyong Line. Natural forces have become the main driving force for changes in China's EEQ, and precipitation and soil sand content were key variables affecting the EEQ. Extensive investigation of continental rift systems has been fundamental for advancing the understanding of extensional tectonics and modes of formation of new ocean basins. However, current rift classification schemes do not account for conjugate end members formed by Large Igneous Province crust, referring to thick mafic crust, sometimes including continental fragments. Here, we investigate the rifting of William's Ridge (Kerguelen Plateau) and Broken Ridge, components of the Kerguelen Large Igneous Province now situated in the Southeast Indian Ocean, and incorporate these end members into the deformation migration concept for rifted margins. We use multichannel seismic reflection profiles and data from scientific drill cores acquired on both conjugate margins to propose, for the first time, a combined tectono‐stratigraphic framework. We interpret seismic patterns, tectonic features, and magnetic anomaly picks to determine an across‐strike structural domain classification. This interpretation considers the rift system overall to be "magma‐poor" despite being located proximal to the Kerguelen plume but suggests that syn‐rift interaction between the Kerguelen mantle plume and the lithospheric structure of William's Ridge and Broken Ridge has controlled the along‐strike segmentation of both conjugates. We integrate seismic reflection and bathymetric data to test the hypothesis of predominantly transform motion, between the Australian and Antarctic plates, in Late Cretaceous and Paleogene time. However, these studies have not considered the case of thick mafic crust, sometimes including continental fragments. Here we focus on William's Ridge (Kerguelen Plateau) and Broken Ridge, formed as a single feature, in the Southern Indian Ocean. We investigate how these features rifted, broke apart, and separated in the current conceptual framework of deformation migration. We use multichannel seismic reflection data, multibeam bathymetry data, drilling results, and magnetics data to interpret their structure, stratigraphy, and tectonics with the goal of explaining how the features evolved in time and space. Surprisingly, we find evidence for relatively weak magmatism despite the features being located near a mantle hotspot. Nevertheless, we suggest that the mantle hotspot influenced how the crust broke apart along different segments of the features' conjugate margins. We also find that the Australia and Antarctic tectonic plates, on which the features are now located, were moving laterally with respect to each other while rifting and breaking apart. Borehole thermal energy storage (BTES) is an innovative renewable energy technology for building heating and cooling. The lack of studies about BTES in unsaturated soils acts as a barrier to further implementation. In this study, the research obstacles, progress, hotspots, and differences between countries of BTES systems in unsaturated soils were described in detail based on a literature review, bibliometric analysis, technology roadmap, and data visualizations. The results show that the process of coupled heat and moisture transfer has been a research hotspot in recent years, and the thermo‐hydraulic properties increase the complexity of analysis. There are few studies on experimental data and engineering practices of BTES systems in unsaturated soils. China is leading in publications number, but European and North American countries perform better in international cooperation and policy incentives. Technology development will be directly driven by policy momentum, followed by the gradual establishment of a complete research, design, and evaluation system, which helps accelerate the replacement of traditional fossil energy with renewable energy. In an attempt to improve society's awareness and move forward with scientific foresight of BTES systems in unsaturated soils, this review has revealed the evolutionary process, identified its current status, and depicted the future development from political, economic, social, and other dimensions. The study aims to explore the environmental factors which activate accumulation abilities of Plantago lanceolata in the research area under strong anthropopressure resulting from the long-term pollution originating from copper mining-metallurgical activities in Southeastern Europe. Sampling was performed at the most endangered sites regarding its proximity to the major and/or secondary pollution sources, as well at the control site. The content of toxic elements (Al, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) was determined in the roots, leaves, stalks and flowers of P. lanceolata. The anthropogenic origin of environmental contamination was denoted through the high concentrations of Cu, Pb and Zn in the leaves of P. lanceolata , reaching toxic levels, combined with the enrichment of plant parts (Enrichment factor >2), especially with Cu (as well as with Al, Fe, Ni and Zn) in samples from the immediate proximity to the copper smelter or at the prevailing wind directions. Biomonitoring potential, assessed through the correlations between toxic element content, as well as the values of Enrichment factor, was indicated for roots (in the case of Cu), all the aboveground plant parts (Fe) and stalks (Zn). The results have shown that the contents of toxic elements in plant parts as well as phytoremediation of P. lanceolata were dependent on soil element content, soil physico-chemical properties and soil enzyme activities, which were regarded as the main environmental drivers affecting phytoremediation ability. The analysis of biological factors (bioconcentration, translocation and bioaccumulation factor) indicated exclusion strategy and possible usage of P. lanceolata in phytostabilization of Zn. The results indicated that the study area is 'environmental hotspot' with potential threat to human health due to the high levels of bioaccumulation of the investigated toxic elements in P. lanceolata parts. The Western Ghats‐Sri Lanka biodiversity hotspot is home to three endemic Lygosomine (Reptilia, Scincidae) skink genera—Kaestlea, Ristella and Lankascincus. Phylogenetic reconstructions in the past have suggested a sister relationship between the Western Ghats endemic Ristella and the Sri Lankan endemic Lankascincus, while the placement of Kaestlea has been uncertain. We reconstruct a global, genus‐level, multi‐locus phylogeny of the sub‐family Lygosominae to ask if these endemic genera share an immediate common ancestor, that is, did they arise from a single dispersal event? Furthermore, to understand the possible centres of origin and dispersal routes of these three genera of Indo‐Sri Lankan skinks, we construct a time‐calibrated phylogeny and perform ancestral range evolution. We find that Kaestlea does not share an immediate ancestor with Ristella + Lankascincus. Therefore, their presence in the Indian subcontinent results from two independent colonization events. Both these dispersal events likely occurred during the late Palaeocene‐early Eocene from the Asian landmass. Our molecular dating and ancestral range evolution analyses add further evidence of probable transoceanic dispersal in skinks and early land connections between the Indian subcontinent and Asia. Habitat fragmentation due to dams is a well‐known threat to freshwater fish. Yet, the global consequences of fragmentation for the viability of freshwater fish populations are unknown. Here, we provide the first global assessment of the threats of dams to the persistence of freshwater fish species. We developed a global macroecological relationship between freshwater fish range size and body size and used this relationship to assess whether isolated range fragments are too small to support a species. Our assessment includes 7369 freshwater fish species and considers the effects of 31,780 dams globally. Furthermore, we performed a more detailed analysis of the threats of dams in Brazil, the greater Mekong region and the United States, using complementary national and regional data sets. Globally, more than half of the species analysed face extirpation in a part of their geographic range, with an average potential range loss of 3.3% (95%‐range: 0%–31.8%) across all species analysed. For 74 fish species, occurring in Brazil, China, India, the Mekong basin, the United States, South‐Africa and the East Adriatic Coast, more than 50% of their range is potentially lost. This includes 18 species threatened with extinction across their whole range. Our complementary regional analysis revealed that the potentially lost range increases by a factor of 2–4 when considering both large and small dams compared with considering only large dams (≥15 m), highlighting the need to establish more comprehensive global dam inventories. Our novel approach and global analysis identifies species at risk of extirpation as well as geographic hotspots of extirpation threat by dams, which can aid in establishing more effective strategies for global hydropower development and barrier removal efforts to optimise the trade‐offs between biodiversity conservation and the socio‐economic benefits of dams. This work aims to describe, classify, and analyze the occurrence of selected natural multi-hazards, specifically pluvial floods and sinkholes, affecting a district in the urban area of Rome, Italy. The procedure is based on a robust geological, geomorphological, and hydrogeological analysis performed using data collected and archived for the scope. The susceptibility is calculated based on geo-hydrological and geomorphological factors, as well as the occurrence of flooding and sinkholes. The areas prone to each single hazard were combined and put into the context of multi-hazard assessment by overlaying the susceptibility with buildings and population data. The resulting map shows that 50% of buildings (6215 inhabitants) are in an area of multi-hazard susceptibility; among these, 25% are in the highest multi-hazard classes (4 and 5). These areas are named "multi-hazard hotspots" because they are affected by many hazards with associated higher impacts. This study demonstrates that a comprehensive approach that combines the examination of geology, hydrogeology, modifications to historical morphology, and the occurrence of geological disasters is effective for mapping geohazards in urban areas and identifying locations with multiple hazards. Many previous studies have primarily focused on the use of deep learning for interferometric processing or separate recognition purposes rather than targeted measurements of detected wellpads. The present study centered around the integration of deep learning recognition and interferometric measurements for Tengiz oilfield wellpads. This study proposes the optimization, automation, and acceleration of targeted ground deformation wellpad monitoring. Mask Region-based Convolutional Neural Network (R-CNN)-based deep learning wellpad recognition and consequent Small Baseline Subset Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (SBAS-InSAR) analyses were used for the assessment of ground deformation in the wellpads. The Mask R-CNN technique allowed us to detect 159 wells with a confidence level of more than 95%. The Mask R-CNN model achieved a precision value of 0.71 and a recall value of 0.91. SBAS-InSAR interferometric measurements identified 13 wells for Sentinel-1 (SNT1), 8 wells for COSMO-SkyMed (CSK), and 20 wells for TerraSAR-X (TSX) located within the −54–−40 mm/y class of vertical displacement (VD) velocity. Regression analyses for the annual deformation velocities and cumulative displacements (CD) of wells derived from SNT1, CSK, and TSX satellite missions showed a good agreement with R2 > 95. The predictions for cumulative displacements showed that the vertical subsidence processes will continue and reach −339 mm on 31 December 2023, with increasing spatial coverage and the potential to impact a higher number of wells. The hydrological analyses in the Tengiz oilfield clearly demonstrated that water flow has been moving towards the detected hotspot of subsidence and that its accumulation will increase with increasing subsidence. This detected subsidence hotspot was observed at a crossing with a seismic fault that might always be subject to reactivation. The role of this seismic fault should also be investigated as one of the ground deformation-controlling factors, even though this area is not considered seismically active. Little is known about the activity of leaf‐cutter ants such as Atta mexicana in urban environments.This study evaluated the soil nutrient concentration of A. mexicana nests and waste dumps compared with adjacent soils to the nests as a control in a Neotropical urban environment.The high nutrient concentration values in waste dumps, such as total C (360%), total N (340%), ammonium (900%) and nitrate (270%) higher than those found in the adjacent soils, except for total P, P‐Bray and sulphates, indicate that A. mexicana waste dumps may be hot spots of high nutrient concentrations in surface soil of an urban ecosystem. The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework puts forward a new conservation target to enhance urban biodiversity. Cities have a great potential for sustaining biodiversity and nurturing a healthy relationship between people and our nearest nature. It is especially important in developing countries such as China, which has a rich biodiversity and a rapidly growing urban population. Using citizen science data, we show that 48% of the national bird diversity and 42% of its threatened species have been recorded in the top-20 most avian-diverse cities of China. Urban bird diversity hotspots clustered along the eastern coast, indicating the importance of establishing an inter-city conservation network along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. This urban conservation network would be a starting point to promote social recognition of biodiversity's relational value in a country with a vast population and an increasingly important role in meeting UN's Sustainable Development Goals. Anthropogenic activities have adverse impacts on productive lands around coastal zones due to rapid developments. Assessment of land use and land cover (LULC) changes provide a better understanding of the process for conservation of such vulnerable ecosystems. Alanya is one of the most popular tourism hotspots on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, and even though the city faced severe LULC changes after the mid-80s due to tourism-related investments, limited number of studies has been conducted in the area The study aimed to determine short-term and long-term LULC changes and effects of residential development process on agricultural lands using six Landsat imageries acquired between 1984 and 2017, and presented the first attempt of future simulation in the area. Average annual conversions (AAC) (ha) were calculated to assess magnitudes of annual changes in six different periods. AACs were used to calculate area demands for LULC2030 and LULC2050, whereby annual conversions from different periods were multiplied by the number of years between 2017, 2030 and 2050 for each scenario. Finally, optimistic and pessimistic scenarios for agricultural lands are simulated using a future land use simulation model. Accordingly, agricultural lands decreased from 53.9% to 31.4% by 22.5% in 33 years and are predicted to change between 19.50% and 24.63% for 2030, 1.07% and 14.10% for 2050, based on pessimistic and optimistic scenarios, respectively. Soil nutrient distribution is heterogeneous in space and time, potentially altering nutrient acquisition by trees and microorganisms. Ecologists have distinguished "hot spots" (HSs) as areas with enhanced and sustained rates of nutrient fluxes relative to the surrounding soil matrix. We evaluated the spatial and temporal patterns in nutrient flux HSs in two mixed-conifer forest soils by repeatedly sampling the soil solution at the same spatial locations (horizontally and vertically) over multiple seasons and years using ion exchange resins incubated in situ. The climate of these forests is Mediterranean, with intense fall rains occurring following summers with little precipitation, and highly variable winter snowfall. Hot spots formed most often for NO3− and Na+. Although nutrient HSs often occurred in the same spatial location multiple times, HSs persisted more often for PO43− NH4+, and NO3−, and were more transient for Ca2+, Mg2+, and Na+. Sampling year (annual precipitation ranged from 558 to 1223 mm) impacted the occurrence of HSs for most nutrients, but season was only significant for PO43−, NH4+, NO3−, and Na+, with HSs forming more often after fall rains than after spring snowmelt. The frequency of HSs significantly decreased with soil depth for all nutrients, forming most commonly immediately below the surficial organic horizon. Although HSs accounted for less than 17% of the sampling volume, they were responsible for 56–88% of PO43−, NH4+, and NO3− resin fluxes. Our results suggest that macronutrient HSs have a disproportional contribution to soil biogeochemical structure, with implications for vegetation nutrient acquisition strategies and biogeochemical models. Simple Summary: Short-horned grasshoppers (Orthoptera; Caelifera) in Anatolia inhabit diverse habitats, aligning with the topographical and climatological heterogeneity of the region. In addition to certain swarming species, attention must be given to the pest potential of several pullulating species within the Anatolian fauna. This study seeks to classify Anatolia's short-horned grasshoppers from a biogeographical perspective and integrate these data to comprehend the future pest potential of non-swarming species, especially in the context of climate change. Our results reveal the following: (i) Acrididae and Pamphagidae are the most diverse families in Anatolia; (ii) approximately 40% of Caelifera and 71% of Pamphagidae are endemic, marking Anatolia as a biodiversity hotspot; (iii) the phytogeographical order of four provinces based on Caelifera diversity is Irano-Anatolia, Euro-Siberia, Mediterranean, and Mesopotamia; and (iv) based on our ecological modelling and personal observations, Dociostaurus maroccanus, Locusta migratoria, Calliptamus italicus, Heteracris pterosticha, Notostaurus anatolicus, Oedipoda miniata, and O. schochii should be monitored due to their pest potential. Biogeographically, Anatolia harbours a rich diversity of short-horned grasshoppers (Orthoptera, Caelifera). The number of species recorded from Anatolia so far stands at 300. They inhabit diverse habitats ranging from arid Eremial to Euro-Siberian-like montane meadows, aligning with the topographical and climatological heterogeneity of Anatolia. Alongside some swarming species, the pest potential of several pullulating species needs attention. This is especially important concerning global warming, a scenario expected to be more severe in the Northern Mediterranean Basin in general and Anatolia specifically. A faunal list of biogeographic Anatolia, the area extending from the Aegean Sea in the west to the intermountain basin of the Caucasus in the northeast, the lowlands of Lake Urmia in the east, and Mesopotamia in the southeast, was developed. The recorded species were classified according to the phytogeographical provinces of Anatolia. Distributions of the species with the potential for pullulating were modelled using ecological-niche-modelling approaches for the present and future. The results have the potential to lead to the development of a concept that merges biogeography and the pest potential of certain Anatolian grasshopper species. Background: Investigations that are focused on arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) biodiversity is still limited. The analysis of the AMF taxa in the North Caucasus, a temperate biodiversity hotspot, used to be limited to the genus level. This study aimed to define the AMF biodiversity at the species level in the North Caucasus biotopes. Methods: The molecular genetic identification of fungi was carried out with ITS1 and ITS2 regions as barcodes via sequencing using Illumina MiSeq, the analysis of phylogenetic trees for individual genera, and searches for operational taxonomic units (OTUs) with identification at the species level. Sequences from MaarjAM and NCBI GenBank were used as references. Results: We analyzed >10 million reads in soil samples for three biotopes to estimate fungal biodiversity. Briefly, 50 AMF species belonging to 20 genera were registered. The total number of the AM fungus OTUs for the "Subalpine Meadow" biotope was 171/131, that for "Forest" was 117/60, and that for "River Valley" was 296/221 based on ITS1/ITS2 data. The total number of the AM fungus species (except for virtual taxa) for the "Subalpine Meadow" biotope was 24/19, that for "Forest" was 22/13, and that for "River Valley" was 28/24 based on ITS1/ITS2 data. Greater AMF diversity, as well as number of OTUs and species, in comparison with that of forest biotopes, characterized valley biotopes (disturbed ecosystems; grasslands). The correlation coefficient between "Percentage of annual plants" and "Glomeromycota total reads" r = 0.76 and 0.81 for ITS1 and ITS2, respectively, and the correlation coefficient between "Percentage of annual plants" and "OTUs number (for total species)" was r = 0.67 and 0.77 for ITS1 and ITS2, respectively. Conclusion: High AMF biodiversity for the river valley can be associated with a higher percentage of annual plants in these biotopes and the active development of restorative successional processes. Phosphorus resources, both in phosphate rocks and in the soil, are limited. However, effective food production is not possible without the use of P fertilizers. Recognizing and eliminating or at least ameliorating factors (hot spots) that interfere with the uptake and use of phosphorus (P) by crop plants is of key importance for effective use of both P and nitrogen (N) on the farm. Plants have developed many adaptation mechanisms to their environment, i.e., soil low in available phosphorus. The most important ones include the secretion of organic compounds into the rhizosphere and the association of plant roots with microorganisms. A classic example is mycorrhiza. These mechanisms can be used by the farmer to sequentially select plants in the crop rotation. The uptake of inorganic P (Pi) by plants from the soil is reduced by environmental (temperature and water) and soil factors (low content of available phosphorus, soil acidity, soil compaction). These factors are responsible for the growth and size of the root system. Mitigating these negative effects improves the efficiency of phosphorus uptake from the soil. The second group of critical factors, limiting both root growth and availability of phosphorus, can be effectively controlled using simple measures (for example, lime). Knowing this, the farmer must first control the level of soil fertility in the plant's effective rooting zone and not only in the topsoil. Agriculture generates ~83% of total US ammonia (NH3) emissions, potentially adversely impacting sensitive ecosystems through wet and dry deposition. Regions with intense livestock production, such as the dairy region of south-central Idaho, generate hotspots of NH3 emissions. Our objective was to measure the spatial and temporal variability of NH3 across this region and estimate its dry deposition. Ambient NH3 was measured using diffusive passive samplers at 8 sites in two transects across the region from 2018–2020. NH3 fluxes were estimated using the Surface Tiled Aerosol and Gaseous Exchange (STAGE) model. Peak NH3 concentrations were 4–5 times greater at a high-density dairy site compared to mixed agriculture/dairy or agricultural sites, and 26 times greater than non-agricultural sites with prominent seasonal trends driven by temperature. Annual estimated dry deposition rates in areas of intensive dairy production can approach 45 kg N ha−1 y−1, compared to <1 kg N ha−1 y−1 in natural landscapes. Our results suggest that the natural sagebrush steppe landscapes interspersed within and surrounding agricultural areas in southern Idaho receive NH3 dry deposition rates within and above the range of nitrogen critical loads for North American deserts. Finally, our results highlight a need for improved understanding of the role of soil processes in NH3 dry deposition to arid and sparsely vegetated natural ecosystems across the western US. Located in Lestelas-Balaguères massif, central northern Pyrenees, France, the Baget catchment covers 13.25 km2 and is highly karstified: so far, more than 80 caves have been recorded. The main outlet of the system, the exsurgence de Las Hountas, has an average flow of 550 L/s. Downstream, it is connected with the hyporheic of the Lachein stream. The Baget system, formed by both the karstic system and the hyporheic, has been intensively investigated by cave biologists and is known to be a hotspot for subterranean biodiversity. The synthesis provided here lists no less than 17 troglobionts and 40 stygobionts, with 3 single site endemics, making the Baget system the richest subterranean hotspot in the Pyrenees. This is notably due to the diversity of subterranean habitats and to the comprehensive knowledge of the stygofauna, likely unmatched at the European scale. Considering the significant speleological findings of the last 15 years that have not been yet biologically investigated, we can expect new discoveries, especially for the troglofauna. The South of France is a biodiversity hotspot within Europe. Here, we present a comprehensive review of surveys conducted in the Cent Fonts aquifer, an overlooked subterranean biodiversity hotspot embedded in a region rich in stygobiotic species and threatened by climate change and water abstraction projects. Key studies, spanning from 1950 to 2006, show a progression in survey methods and results, although troglobiotic species remain poorly documented. With 43 stygobiotic species recorded, the Cent Fonts is the richest stygobiont hotspot in France. Most species are regional endemics, a quarter of which are considered vulnerable by the IUCN. The Cent Fonts also hosts several relict species and is the type locality of four species. Such a high biological value clearly deserves to be preserved. Our analysis warns of a possible decline in biodiversity, as eight of the species recorded in the 20th century were absent from the 2006 survey, suggesting potential threats of unknown origin. The capture of the Cent Font springs for water abstraction is discussed as a potential threat to this ecosystem and its unique biodiversity. Quaternary small mammals are important proxies for paleoenvironmental reconstructions. The Brazilian record, although famous and continuously growing, is hampered by poor chronological control due to the nature of most of the published assemblages. Here, we present a taphonomic analysis and paleoenvironmental reconstruction based on marsupials, bats, and rodents (480 remains) from the Gruta do Presépio archeological site (GPR, hereafter), Santa Catarina State, southern Brazil. The site is a rock shelter located in an Atlantic Forest biome, an important biodiversity hotspot. The GPR sedimentary sequence spans the Early Holocene (8330 ± 30 years 14C BP) to recent Historical time (after the arrival of Europeans). Most of the small mammal remains were deposited by strigiforms, although for the oldest units some strongly digested remains could indicate the activity of diurnal birds or carnivorous mammals. The GPR small mammal assemblages include 28 taxa (five marsupials, nine chiropterans, and 14 rodents). Most of them indicate the occurrence and persistence of forested environments during the Holocene around the site, which is in overall agreement with regional palynological data. A major community change, implying the increment of rodents allied to disturbed ecosystems (e.g. Akodon, Oligoryzomys, Mus), is very recent and reflects human forest clearance as a signature of the Anthropocene. Developing systematic conservation plans depends on a wealth of information on a region's biodiversity. For 'dark taxa' such as arthropods, such data are usually very incomplete and in most cases left out from assessments.Sky islands are important and often fragile biodiversity hotspots. Southern Appalachian high‐elevation spruce–fir forests represent a particularly threatened sky‐island ecosystem, hosting numerous endemic and threatened species, but their arthropods remain understudied.Here we use voucher‐based megabarcoding to explore genetic differentiation among leaf‐litter arthropod communities of these highlands, and to examine the extent to which they represent dispersed communities of more or less coherent species, manageable as a distributed unit. We assembled a dataset comprising more than 6000 COI sequences representing diverse arthropod groups to assess species richness and sharing across peaks and ranges. Comparisons were standardised across taxa using automated species delimitation, measuring endemism levels by putative species.Species richness was high, with sites hosting from 86 to 199 litter arthropod species (not including mites or myriapods). Community profiles suggest that around one fourth of these species are unique to single sky islands and more than one third of all species are limited to a particular range. Across major taxa, endemicity was lowest in Araneae, and highest in neglected groups like Isopoda, Pseudoscorpionida, Protura and Diplura.Southern Appalachian sky islands of spruce–fir habitat host significantly distinct leaf‐litter arthropod communities, with high levels of local endemicity. This is the first work to provide such a clear picture of peak and range uniqueness for a taxonomically broad sample. "Hot spot analysis" was applied to materials from 51 Landsat satellite images using the example of the "Burtinskaya Steppe" area of the Orenburgskii Nature Reserve, to study the dynamics of areas of positive phytomass anomalies relative to a neighborhood with a radius of 300 m. The purpose of this study was to establish the dependence of the variability of areas of increased phytomass on the landscape structure and hydrothermal conditions. The switching of phytocenoses in transition zones from steppe to meadow type of functioning is ensured by varying the ratio of xerophytes and mesophytes depending on fluctuations in the hydrothermal conditions. The frequency and area of positive phytomass anomalies in the bottoms of gullies correlates with their area on partially forested slopes, which indicates the positive role of forest vegetation in the stabilization of moisture influx into the bottoms. In deforested catchment areas of the south-facing slopes, the area of positive phytomass anomalies is determined by the supply of snow moisture, and, in the catchment areas of north-facing slopes, by warm-period precipitation. Despite the huge difference in land coverage between mountains and lowlands, most species are indeed found in mountains and foothills. The causes of this pattern have challenged biogeographers and evolutionary biologists. The Espinhaço and Mantiqueira Ranges are large mountain ranges from eastern Brazil that are global biodiversity hotspots located between the Brazilian Atlantic Forest (AF) and the Cerrado. However, Espinhaço and Mantiqueira species diversity may still be underestimated, either due taxonomic complexity or morphological cryptic species complexes. Two hylid frogs, Bokermannohyla nanuzae and Bokermannohyla feioi, are endemic, respectively, distributed in these two mountain ranges. These species were recently synonymized based on traditional taxonomy. We used data from the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) gene 16S and two nuclear genes to undertake phylogenetic and network, distance-based, and multispecies coalescent analyses on B. nanuzae, B. feioi, and an extensive outgroup dataset. We tested the monophyly of B. nanuzae, as well as the presence of candidate new species. Based on 16S phylogenetic analysis, We recovered B. nanuzae as paraphyletic, with B. sagarana nested within it. We recovered two main groups, with the geographic distribution generally corresponding to the Cerrado and AF boundaries. Probably due to ancestral polymorphism, both nuclear haplotype genealogies failed to distinguish B. nanuzae from the former B. feioi and/or from B. sagarana. The time-calibrated mtDNA tree revealed that B. martinsi, B. sagarana, and B. nanuzae have diverged during the Late Miocene, subsequently splitting into the remaining species/lineages during the Plio-Pleistocene. Taken together, our distance-based barcode and nuclear Bayesian analyses identified the former B. feioi, referred to as the AF group, as a distinct evolutionary lineage from B. nanuzae (Cerrado group). We provide the first insights into how different evolutionary lineages speciated in the highlands of southeastern Brazil and revalidated B. feioi for the AF group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Climate change negatively affects crop productivity, threatening the survival of entire populations from many vulnerable hotspot regions of the world with the risk of exacerbating hunger, malnutrition and international inequality. Selecting plant species manifesting abiotic stress-tolerant adaptive traits represents a challenge towards ensuring that crops are more resistant and resilient to environmental perturbations. The rhizosheath, defined as the complex of root hair, exudates and soil that strongly adheres to plant roots, is a promising root adaptive trait in facing conditions of water and nutrient deficits, as well as acidic soil. Several beneficial ecological functions are attributed to the rhizosheath, such as enhancing water and nutrient uptake; protecting from dehydration, heat and acid stresses; and stimulating microbial activities. It has been described in several Angiosperm species, including crops grown in severe habitats. The aim of this review was to collect the relevant literature produced to date regarding rhizosheaths, focusing on (i) the various processes involved in its formation, including both physicochemical and biological ones; (ii) the evolutionary and ecological role of rhizosheaths; and (iii) the most frequently used methodologies for its investigation and characterization. The present work provides a comprehensive overview of this revolutionary root's great agronomic importance in order to address future research aiming to fill the existing knowledge gaps and define a common and shared methodology. The Água Clara Cave System was previously recognized as a prominent hotspot of subterranean biodiversity in South America, harboring 31 cave-restricted species. However, a recent expedition conducted in September 2023, coinciding with an exceptionally dry period in the region, provided access to previously unexplored areas. Therefore, the objective of this research was to investigate the cave-restricted invertebrate species, extending the findings from a previous article on the Agua Clara Cave System published in June 2023, and emphasizing the significance of this system as one of the most crucial tropical biodiversity hotspots. This survey unveiled an additional 10 species, raising the count of cave-restricted species within the system to an impressive 41. This remarkable diversity not only solidifies the Água Clara Cave System's position as a paramount hotspot of subterranean biodiversity in the tropics but also serves as a stark warning about the imminent risks faced by these species. The Tibetan Plateau is one of the most complicated geographical units worldwide in terms of its tectonic and environmental background. Although a hotspot for continental weathering and carbon cycling studies, accurate determination of the weathering carbon budget is challenging in this area, especially sink and source flux quantification and the controlling mechanisms. Compared with other major rivers on the plateau, the Nujiang River is characterized by less human disturbance and maintains a relatively pristine state. This study investigates the high spatiotemporal resolution hydrochemistry and dual-carbon isotope composition (δ13CDIC and Δ14CDIC) of river water in the Nujiang River Basin. The results revealed that the solutes and dissolved inorganic carbon in the river water are predominantly derived from rock weathering by carbonic and sulfuric acids, mainly due to the carbonate weathering process, and significantly enhanced by deep carbon sourcing from hot springs in the fault zone. The average contributions of geological and modern carbon in the main stream of the Nujiang River are 35.2% and 64.8%, respectively, and sulfide oxidation contributes >90% of sulfate ions in the river water. After considering the involvement of sulfuric acid generated by sulfide oxidation during rock weathering, the calculated consumption fluxes of atmospheric CO2 by silicate and carbonate weathering in the watershed were decreased by approximately 52.0% and 37.4%, respectively, compared with those calculated ignoring this process. Rock weathering of the Nujiang River Basin is a "CO2 sink" on a short time scale, while the participation of sulfuric acid makes it a "CO2 source" on a geological time scale. The high-frequency observations of ion concentrations, elemental ratios, and calculated contributions of different rock weathering materials indicate that carbonate rock weathering is more sensitive to temperature and runoff variations than silicate rock weathering, with the solute contribution from carbonate weathering increasing significantly during monsoon period. The material input from different rock types is dominated by the hydrological pathways and water-rock reaction times in the basin. This study reveals the river solute origins and weathering CO2 sequestration effect in response to a monsoonal climate in one of the most representative pristine plateau watersheds in the world, which is of great importance for elucidating the weathering control mechanisms and CO2 net source-sink effect in plateau watersheds. Waste management signifies an equilibrium between environmental and economic factors. However, a comprehensive understanding of the integrated life cycle environmental-economic performance of waste management activities remains unclear. To facilitate a systematic linkage between the economic and environmental sectors, a regionalized life cycle assessment-based life cycle costing method was developed based on China's actual status quo. The cow manure utilization was set as an entry point to explored long-term environmental-economic performance of milk production under various manure utilization pathways. The results show that trade-offs were observed between internal and external costs as well as various environmental indicators. The choice of waste utilization is the focal point of environmental-economic trade-offs in the cow raising system. The optimal environmental-economic performance was achieved through the manure fertilizer utilization pathway, yielding a remarkable three-fold increase in marginal environmental benefits. Compared with fertilizer utilization, the manure direct returning to field reduced the carbon footprint by 12% while induced an external cost of $14.3. The wastewater treatment pathway is $ 5.5 lower in internal costs but $ 11.7 higher in external costs than those of fertilizer utilization. Overall, utilizing manure has potential to mitigate the upward trend of carbon footprint and external costs. However, achieving the carbon peak remains a significant challenge. A promising solution is the recycling of straw resources within cropping systems, particularly in hotspot regions (e.g., Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang, Hebei, and Shandong). A comprehensive analysis of the dynamic interplay between cropping systems and cow raising systems is critical steps towards realizing a carbon-neutral future within the dairy production. This study aimed to examine the dynamics of soil functional indicators under the influence of deadwood in old mixed beech forests in northern Iran. In January and February 2006, several strong wind events occurred in the forest of Khanikan, which led to severe windthrow. All the fallen trees remained in the protected parcel and were not removed. Immediately after tree felling in the studied areas, five common tree species [Fagus orientalis (Fagus), Acer velutinum (Acer), Carpinus betulus (Carpinus), Alnus subcordata (Alnus), and Tilia begonifolia (Tilia)] with the highest abundance of deadwood (with 14 individual trees) were marked as permanent plots for monitoring their effect on soil functions. Wood samples were collected from the trunks and soil samples (0–10 cm depth) from the lower part of deadwood in August 2011, 2016, and 2021. In addition, soil samples were taken from areas that did not have deadwood as control areas. For the study of soil biological parameters, soil samples were collected in August and November (2011, 2016, and 2021). However, for monitoring soil N transformation, soil samples were taken in August, September, November, and December (2011, 2016, and 2021). We found that Alnus and Carpinus deadwood had higher N, K, P, and Ca contents than deadwood of other species. Higher values of C and Mg were observed in Fagus deadwood in the final stages of sampling (2021). Anlus deadwood enhanced the stability of soil aggregates, soil nutrient contents, as well as soil enzyme and microbial activities, and soil fauna and microflora populations during the decay process. Based on our findings, the intensity of soil functions increased in the order control < Fagus < Tilia < Acer < Carpinus < Alnus, which corresponds to the increasing quality of the deadwood of the tree species. Our data emphasize that retaining deadwood is highly effective in boosting carbon and nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems, which may have implications for forest management strategies to improve soil ecological functions and forest sustainability. Although our observations were obtained in an old mixed beech forest, the importance of deadwood on soil functional characteristics can also be assumed in a broader range of forest environments, but this requires further investigation to determine the mechanisms that explain these phenomena. Human heat stress depends jointly on atmospheric temperature and humidity. Wetter soils reduce temperature but also raise humidity, making the collective impact on heat stress unclear. To better understand these interactions, we use ERA5 to examine the coupling between daily average soil moisture and wet-bulb temperature (Tw) and its seasonal and diurnal cycle at global scale. We identify a global soil moisture–Tw coupling pattern with both widespread negative and positive correlations in contrast to the well-established cooling effect of wet soil on dry-bulb temperature. Regions showing positive correlations closely resemble previously identified land–atmosphere coupling hotspots where soil moisture effectively controls surface energy partition. Soil moisture–Tw coupling varies seasonally closely tied to monsoon development, and the positive coupling is slightly stronger and more widespread during nighttime. Local-scale analysis demonstrates a nonlinear structure of soil moisture–Tw coupling with stronger coupling under relatively dry soils. Hot days with high Tw values show wetter-than-normal soil, anomalous high latent and low sensible heat flux from a cooler surface, and a shallower boundary layer. This supports the hypothesis that wetter soil increases Tw by concentrating surface moist enthalpy flux within a shallower boundary layer and reducing free-troposphere-air entrainment. We identify areas of particular interest for future studies on the physical mechanisms of soil moisture–heat stress coupling. Our findings suggest that increasing soil moisture might amplify heat stress over large portions of the world including several densely populated areas. These results also raise questions about the effectiveness of evaporative cooling strategies in ameliorating urban heat stress. Significance Statement: The purpose of this study is to provide a global picture of the relationship between soil moisture anomalies and a heat stress metric that includes the joint effects of temperature and humidity. This is important because a better understanding of this relationship will help improve the prediction of extreme heat stress events and inform strategies for ameliorating heat stress. We find a widespread positive correlation between soil moisture and heat stress, in contrast to studies relying on temperature alone. This raises the possibility that, over much of the world, and in the most populous regions, strategies like irrigation or "greening" that can reduce temperature might be ineffective or even harmful in reducing heat stress with humidity incorporated. Habitat for biodiversity is a crucial soil function. When assessed at large spatial scales, subjective assessment models are usually constructed by integrating expert knowledge to estimate soil biodiversity potentials (SBP) and predict their trends. However, these regional evaluation methods are challenging to apply mechanistically to other regions, especially in China, where soil biodiversity surveys are still in their infancy. Taking China (9.6 × 106 km2) as the study area, we constructed a Decision EXpert (DEX) multi-attribute decision model based on abiotic factors from soil and climate data that are known to be relevant for the habitat of soil biota. It was used to indirectly assess and map national SBP based on the habitat suitability for fungi, bacteria, nematodes, and earthworms in the topsoil. The results show: (1) the SBP in China was classified into five grades: low, covering 19.8% of the area, medium-low (21.2%), medium (16.0%), medium-high (38.5%), and high (4.5%); (2) the national SBP is at a moderate level, with hotspot areas (1.3 × 106 km2) located in the Yangtze Plain Region, the southeastern Southwest China Region, and the central-eastern South China Region; while the coldspot areas (2.6 × 106 km2) are located in the Gansu–Xinjiang Region and the northeastern Qinghai–Tibet Region; (3) Soil (pH, SOC, CEC, texture, total P, and C/N ratio) and climate (arid/humid regions, temperature zones) were identified as driving this SBP variation. This study presents a general approach to describing soil habitat function on a broad scale based on environmental covariates. It provides a systematic basis for selecting indicators and maps them to SBP from an objective perspective. The mountains of the southern Iberian Peninsula are important biodiversity hotspots. They are also home to several relict species that are threatened with extinction in the face of global change. One of the best examples is the Serranía de Ronda, a system of mountainous reliefs located at the western end of the Baetic Cordillera. Its tree cover includes, among other unusual taxa, endemic formations such as the Spanish fir (Abies pinsapo) and Portuguese oak (Quercus faginea) forests. However, despite the ecological exceptionality of this mountainous area, little is known about its paleobiogeography. To remedy this, in this research we take a multidisciplinary approach based on the application of several different paleoecological disciplines, of which pedoanthracology is the main methodological tool. Six new soil surveys were performed, which were added to the existing pedoanthracological network, making a total of 43 soil sampling sites. The taxonomic analysis revealed several taxa, such as Abies, Fraxinus, Pinus and Pinus sylvestris -type, which are currently absent in several of the sampled sites. After contextualizing the 36 new radiocarbon dates obtained, the results confirm the antiquity of certain paleoendemic forests in the Serranía de Ronda, and the important role played by certain mountain enclaves as refuges for conifers such as A. pinsapo and Pinus sylvestris- type during the Pleistocene-Holocene transition. The dissemination of the results of this research will enable them to be implemented in the different strategies of adaptive management of the most threatened forests of the Serranía de Ronda. Aim: Analysing the spatio‐temporal patterns and dynamics of non‐native species is essential to understanding the mechanisms underlying successful invasions and developing effective management strategies. Yet, such analyses generally neglect the influence of receiving ecosystem types and non‐native species sources (i.e. alien species, non‐natives originating outside the concerned region; translocated species, non‐natives introduced to locations outside their historical range within the concerned region). Location: Yunnan, China. Methods: We analysed long‐term (1950–2022) spatio‐temporal patterns and potential underlying dynamics of non‐native fishes in a biodiversity hotspot (Yunnan, China), paying special attention to waterbody types receiving non‐native species and comparing alien and translocated species. We did this through compiling a highly comprehensive occurrence dataset of native and non‐native fishes. Results: We recorded 783 native species and 94 non‐native species (49 alien species and 45 translocated species), which mainly belonged to the order Cypriniformes (52 species) and were introduced via purposes for advancing aquaculture. Most frequently encountered non‐native species were either intentionally introduced aquaculture species or small‐bodied fish unintentionally introduced via aquaculture activities. The richness and spatial ranges of non‐native fishes increased consistently since the 1950s and demonstrated a pronounced change after the 2000s, with densely populated areas and the middle to lower reaches of large rivers being more profoundly affected. The number of records of translocated species exceeded the number of records of alien species after the 2000s. Lakes and reservoirs are hotspots for both alien and translocated species introductions, and watersheds with large areas in Yunnan (e.g. the Jinsha‐Yangtze and Lancang‐Mekong basins) contained more non‐native fish. Main Conclusions: Our study highlights the need to consider invasion sensitivities of receiving ecosystems and pay special attention to intra‐regional species translocations when developing prevention and management strategies against invasions of alien species, particularly in important biodiversity hotspots around the world. Insufficient knowledge about soil nitrous and nitric oxide (N2O and NO) emissions from vegetable production limits our ability to constrain their atmospheric budget. Carrots (Daucus carota) are a globally important, heavily managed and irrigated, high-value horticultural crop. Although intensively fertilized carrots may be an important hot-spot source of N2O and NO emissions, we have little information on the response of soil N2O emissions to fertilization and no information on the NO emissions response. To fill this knowledge gap, we conducted a replicated field experiment on mineral soil in the Negev Desert. We grew carrots with drip irrigation, applying five fertilization levels, ranging between 0 and 400 kg N ha−1. During one growth season we estimated responses of the soil N2O and NO emissions, partial crop N balance, and carrot yields to incremental fertilization levels. Carrot yield increased with increasing fertilization from 0 to 100 kg N ha−1 and exhibited no further response thereafter. Soil N2O and NO emissions were similar at all fertilization levels and did not differ significantly from those in the unfertilized control. The estimated N budget was negative for all fertilization levels. Carrots incorporated 30–140 kg N ha−1 into their belowground biomass and 120–285 kg N ha−1 into their aboveground biomass per season. Climate indices are often used as a climate monitoring tool, allowing us to understand how the frequency, intensity, and duration of extreme weather events are changing over time. Here, based on complex statistical analysis we identify highly correlated significant pairs of compound events at the highest spatial resolution, on a monthly temporal scale across Europe. Continental-scale monthly analysis unleashes information on compound events such as high-risk zones, hotspots, monthly shifts of hotspots and trends, risk exposure to land cover and population, and identification of maximum increasing trends. While there are many studies on single or compound climate extremes there are only a few studies that addresses the relationship between pairs of hazards, the incorporation of bioclimatic indices, the determination of a grid best-fit copula approach, and the outlining relevance of this work of compound event risks with exposures. In this respect, here, using 27-bivariate and 10-trivariate copula models, we show that the different hazard pairs have high combined risks of indices related to radiation, temperature, evapotranspiration, bioclimatic-based indices, such as the universal thermal climate index, wind chill index, and heat index, mainly over the northern and eastern European countries. Furthermore, we show that over the last 7 decades, agricultural and coastal areas are highly exposed to the risks of defined hotspots of compound events. In some of the hotspots of compound events-identified by clusters, there is no monthly shifts of hotspots, leading to higher impacts when compounded. The Hawaiian Chain-Emperor Seamounts is known to be one of the most active regions influenced by mantle hotspot. However, previous studies have provided limited information on the growth process and metal enrichment of marine ferromanganese crusts as indicators of post-eruption history. In this study, we conducted a geochronological and major elemental study of a hydrogenetic ferromanganese crust, from the Detroit Seamount using high-resolution magnetic and geochemical scanning. Our findings are as follows: (1) A total of 39 magnetozones are recognized in the studied section of the crust, which can be preliminarily correlated to the geomagnetic polarity timescale from chrons C1n to C5Dn. This correlation yields growth rates of 1.48–2.18 mm/Myr over the past ∼18 Myr. (2) Columnar and lamellar growth structures are identified with distinct metal enrichment patterns. A significant transition from lamellar to columnar growth occurred at ∼11.6 Ma. (3) The quantified elements can be clustered into three groups, (Mn, Cu–Co–Ni, and Al–Si), (Fe and Ti), and Ca. A strong correlation between metal enrichment in the crust and the global benthic foraminifera δ13C record is then observed. Based on these results, we suggest a predominant role of deep-sea redox conditions in the growth history of ferromanganese deposits on the Detroit Seamount since the Early Miocene.
