1. An unusual new ophiuroid (Echinodermata) from the Late Ordovician (early Katian) of Morocco.

Abstract: A distinctive new genus and species of the subphylum Asterozoa, Componaster spurius n. gen., n. sp., is described from the Late Ordovician (early Katian) of Morocco. Construction of the ambulacral column is considered key to delineation of classes of the subphylum Asterozoa: morphology and configuration of the mouth frame, axial (ambulacral series), and adaxial (lateral series) enable class-level assignment of C. spurius n. gen., n. sp. to the Ophiuroidea Gray, 1840. However, overall form and aspects of extraxial skeletal expression from beyond the ambulacral column are strongly reminiscent of expressions of the Asteroidea de Blainville, 1830. The character complex of C. spurius n. gen., n. sp. precludes its alignment with any available ophiuran ordinal concept, and available data do not justify proposal of new ordinal terminology: the species is left incertae sedis at the ordinal level but a new familial taxon, Componasteridae n. fam., is recognized. Although Late Ordovician, the complex morphology of Componaster spurius n. gen., n. sp. suggests either plesiomorphic expressions from asterozoan diversification surviving until the Katian or significant homoplasy during early asterozoan history. 2. Additions to the late Eocene Süngülü mammal fauna in Easternmost Anatolia and the Eocene-Oligocene transition at the periphery of Balkanatolia.

Abstract: The Eocene-Oligocene transition marks a period of dramatic global climatic change correlated with pronounced mammalian faunal change. Fossil evidence is indispensable for studying the distribution of taxa through time, and determining how abiotic parameters shaped ancient biodiversity. Here we report ruminant artiodactyls and a new anthropoid primate from Süngülü, a locality in Eastern Anatolia that has yielded a diversified and largely endemic assemblage of rodents. Three taxa of ruminants are recognized, the tragulid Iberomeryx parvus Gabunia, 1964, a larger species of Iberomeryx Gabunia, 1964, and a bachitheriid referred to cf. Bachitherium sp. A lower molar is identified as the new eosimiid primate Sungulusimias unayae n. gen., n. sp., which is the first occurrence of Paleogene anthropoids in western Asia. The lower molar of Sungulusimias unayae n. gen., n. sp. is characterized by protoconid and metaconid closely spaced and of similar height and volume, paraconid cuspidate and nearly connate with metaconid, strong mesiobuccal cingulid, and entoconid without strong connection to hypoconulid via the postcristid. The composition of this assemblage together with rodents indicates a probable Latest Eocene age for Süngülü, although an early Oligocene age cannot be completely ruled out. The rodent fauna from Süngülü suggests that endemism persisted at the periphery of Balkanatolia until the latest Eocene while Eastern Anatolia was situated in a strategic corridor for faunal exchanges between eastern Asia, Indo-Pakistan and Europe. During the Eocene-Oligocene transition, Balkanatolia probably functioned as a "holding pen" where various taxa were confined for significant intervals of time before proceeding to colonize Western Europe at the Grande Coupure. 3. A new species of possible archipolypodan millipede from the Carboniferous of the Netherlands with unusually long tergites.

Abstract: Millipedes have a long evolutionary history, with the oldest presumed fossils of Diplopoda de Blainville in Gervais, 1844 being from the Silurian and the first definite fossil record originating from Devonian deposits. The phylogeny of Diplopoda is not fully resolved yet, especially not concerning fossil representatives. At the same time, already in the Palaeozoic millipedes showed quite a morphological and presumably also ecological variety. We describe here a new species of a Carboniferous millipede from the Westphalian A of the Netherlands, Lauravolsella willemeni n. gen., n. sp., a possible representative of Archipolypoda (†Archipolypoda Scudder, 1882). The species is based on a single specimen, preserved with part and counterpart, which both show a three-dimensional preservation. The specimen has unusually long tergites, in normal life position covering most of the following segment. These long tergites might have been beneficial when performing defensive enrolling. In extant millipedes, enrolling is usually facilitated by softer areas between the sternites, allowing for a certain degree of ventral compression. In the new fossil, the sclerotic sternites occupy the entire length of the ventral side of the segment, not allowing for any type of compression. The new fossil therefore demonstrates another solution for the mechanical challenges during enrolment and increases the morphological diversity of Carboniferous millipedes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

4. A new campterophlebiid damsel-dragonfly (Odonata: Isophlebioidea) from the Middle Jurassic Yanan Formation of Yulin City, Shaanxi Province, NW China.

Abstract: The family Campterophlebiidae Handlirsch, 1920 is the dominant Jurassic clade of Odonata Fabricius, 1793, especially hosting a high diversification in northern China. The Chinese campterophlebiid damsel-dragonflies were mainly recovered from the Middle Jurassic of Inner Mongolia, northern China. In the present study, a new campterophlebiid, Parasinitsia qingyunensis n. gen., n. sp., is described from the early Middle Jurassic Yanan Formation of the Ordos Basin, NW China. Parasinitsia n. gen. resembles the genus Sinitsia Pritykina, 2006 recorded from the Upper Jurassic of eastern Transbaikalia, but differs from the latter in having two or three rows of cells between RA and RP1 distal of the pterostigma, IR2 and RP3/4 with at least four rows of cells near the wing margin, and CuAa with about 15 rows of cells between it and the posterior wing margin in the broadest area. The new damsel-dragonfly comes from a new early Middle Jurassic insect site from the Ordos Basin, providing new clues to understand the terrestrial ecosystems during this epoch. 5. Micronautilus n. gen., a new dwarf Bathonian (Middle Jurassic) nautilid from Western France.

Abstract: The new genus Micronautilus n. gen. (type species Micronautilus evolutus n. gen., n. sp.) is described and assigned to the family Paracenoceratidae Spath, 1927. Known from only two species with a very small shell, this taxon is regarded to represent a natural lineage within the family. As currently known, the occurrence of Micronautilus n. gen. is limited to the Bathonian of Western France, extending from the Zigzag Zone to the Retrocostatum Zone. The origin of Micronautilus n. gen. is likely to lie in the upper Bajocian group of nautilids assigned to 'Cenoceras' fuscum (Crick, 1898). Abstract: Mantis shrimps (Stomatopoda Latreille, 1817) are marine predatory crustaceans of the group Hoplocarida Calman, 1904 with an interesting, though incompletely known, evolutionary history. Here we introduce a new species of fossil mantis shrimps, Ostenosculda teruzzii n. gen., n. sp. from the Early Jurassic (Sinemurian) limestone formation of Osteno (Northern Italy). We present distinctive features that characterize the specimens as a new species, such as a unique arrangement of maxillipeds 2-5 (maxilliped 2 is the major raptorial appendage). We also present a phylogenetic systematic interpretation of the species based on the available features of morphology and body organisation. The unusual arrangement of the maxillipeds appears to represent a plesiomorphic condition relative to extant mantis shrimps: the maxillipeds are arranged in an almost straight anterior-posterior line, with rather large distances between them. This contrasts with extant forms and slightly younger fossils of about 150 million years old lithographic limestones (Late Jurassic) where further anterior maxillipeds are inserting far laterally and further posterior ones more medially, with very small distances between the next posterior ones. The herein studied specimens are the first of their kind to be confirmed for this period and geographical region and further close gaps in our understanding of the evolution of mantis shrimps. Abstract: The fossil record of dipnoans is mostly represented by tooth plates and jaw bones, whereas nearly complete or complete skulls are rare. Here, we describe a new dipnoan from the Santonian (Upper Cretaceous) of Patagonia (Argentina) using three-dimensional renderings generated by CT scans. It consists of a near-complete skull and postcranial material. Rinconodus salvadori n. gen., n. sp. is diagnosed by a combination of features, such as medial series composed of two unpaired bones, mediolateral series composed of two paired bones, lateral series with at least one bone, medial edge of tooth plates longer than the lingual edge and equally curved, upper tooth plates contiguous or close to one another with five denticulations, lower tooth plates widely separated with four denticulations, first denticulation of upper tooth plates longer and thinner than the remaining denticulations, and posteriorly curved, first denticulation of lower tooth plates relatively straight and longer than the remaining ones, among other characters. The new species is based on the first two nearly complete Santonian dipnoan skulls from South America. 9. Condorodus n. gen., a new Ordovician conodont genus from Argentina: origin, evolution and dispersal through the western margin of Gondwana.

Abstract: Ordovician conodont collections from several Argentinian basins including the Eastern Cordillera, Famatina and Precordillera allow recognition of a group of conodonts that comprise a new genus here named Condorodus n. gen. Species of this genus have an apparatus composed of six elements recovered so far: Pa, Pb, Sb1, Sb2, Sc and Sd. The differences mainly between the P elements support recognizing three species, from the older to younger: C. diablensis n. gen., n. sp., C. gracielae n. gen., n. sp. and C. chilcaensis n. gen., n. sp., that appeared in the upper Floian (Lower Ordovician) and vanished in middle Darriwilian time (Middle Ordovician). The Eastern Cordillera is here assumed as the place of origin of the Condorodus n. gen. lineage during the late Floian, and then this genus dispersed through the western margin of Gondwana, reaching the Precordillera in the early Darriwilian, from there it could have dispersed to different regions of Gondwana, Perigondwana and Laurentia during the late Darriwilian, and probably give rise to conodont apparatuses of similar morphology in the Late Ordovician. 11. Rindifilum ramosum gen. nov., sp. nov., a new freshwater genus within the Ulvales (Ulvophyceae, Chlorophyta).

Abstract: The present paper provides a phylogenetic and morphological study of two strains that turn out to represent a new genus and species, Rindifilum ramosum gen. nov., sp. nov., within the family Ctenocladiaceae (Ulvales). Rindifilum ramosum gen. nov., sp. nov. grows in association with the lichenized ascomycetes genus Verrucaria Schrader. Phylogenetic reconstructions based on the rbcL, 18S rRNA and tufA genes showed that the investigated strains belonged to a lineage distinct from those sequenced so far. Moreover, comparisons based on morphological observations revealed no differences between the two strains. The newly genus Rindifilum gen. nov. exhibits a unique combination of morphological features, as the "pear-shaped" cells that develop directly into a "hammer-shaped filament", making it distinct from all other green algae described so far. Abstract: The new genus Aramazdospirifer n. gen. (Cyrtospiriferidae) is erected to include Spirifer orbelianus Abich, 1858 from the lower Famennian of Central Armenia as its type species and to refute long-standing claims related to the affinities of the latter. The micro-ornament and internal structure of this species are investigated and documented for the first time, on the basis of recently collected material from the Ertych horizon of three different sections. Additionally, a neotype is selected for Abich's species as the type material is lost. Aramazdospirifer orbelianus (Abich, 1858) n. comb. is a biostratigraphically important species for the lower Famennian strata of the Lesser Caucasus. Abstract: The diversity of basal ungulates is significant in the late middle Eocene Pondaung Formation (Myanmar). However, the precise identification or attribution of some fossils is sometimes difficult because of the scarcity and poor preservation of the material. We describe here a new genus and species of a Dichobunidae from Paukkaung Kyitchaung 2 locality, that is morphologically and probably phylogenetically close to a taxon from the early-middle Eocene of Pakistan, and we discuss the attribution of dental material to Myanmarius chitseini Tsubamoto, Egi, Takai, Htike & Zin-Maung-Maung-Thein, 2013, an inderterminate artiodactyl from Pondaung. Abstract: Most upper Homerian and Ludfordian retiolitines have a tubarium with hexagonal meshes and a zigzag pattern in the middle part of their lateral walls, a shallow ancora umbrella, and a free nema. Hoffmanigraptus varsoviensis n. gen., n. sp. is described from isolated, three-dimensional material, from the upper part of the Colonograptus praedeubeli Biozone (upper Homerian, Silurian) of Poland, Baltica, and represents one of the earliest forms with this construction. This type of tubarium is represented by the upper Homerian Doliograptus Lenz & Kozłowska-Dawidziuk, 2002 and Spinograptus Bouček & Münch, 1952, differing from Hoffmanigraptus n. gen. mainly in larger proximal lateral orifices, pattern of clathrial lists on lateral walls, as well as size and shape of tubaria. Hoffmanigraptus n. gen. has a tubarium widening medially, tapering towards the distal end and forming a finite tubarium, with a possible three-vaned nematularium. Flattened specimens Plectograptus? ovatus Kozłowska, Lenz & Štorch, 2001 and Plectograptus? karlsteinensis Kozłowska, Lenz & Štorch, 2001, preserved on a rock surface from the Barrandian area are assigned to the new genus. 16. The anatomy, phylogenetic relationships, and autecology of the carnivorous lizard "Saniwa" feisti Stritzke, 1983 from the Eocene of Messel, Germany.

Abstract: The evolution and interrelationships of carnivorous squamates (mosasaurs, snakes, monitor lizards, Gila Monsters) are a contentious part of reptile systematics and go to the heart of conflict between morphological and molecular data in inferring evolutionary history. One of the best-preserved fossils in this motley grouping is "Saniwa" feisti Stritzke, 1983, represented by complete skeletons from the early-middle Eocene of Messel, Germany. We re-describe it on the basis of superficial examination, stereoradiography, and high-resolution X-ray computed tomography of new and published specimens. The scalation of the lizard is unique, consisting of small, keeled scales on the head (including a row of enlarged medial supraorbitals) and large, rhomboidal, keeled scales (invested by osteoderms) that covered the rest of the body. Two paired longitudinal rows of enlarged scales ran down the neck. The head was laterally compressed and box-shaped due to the presence of a strong canthal-temporal ridge; the limbs and tail were very long. Notable osteological features include: a toothed, strap-like vomer; septomaxilla with a long posterior process; palpebral with a long posterolateral process; a lacrimal boss and a single lacrimal foramen; a well-developed cultriform process of the parabasisphenoid; two hypoglossal (XII) foramina in addition to the vagus; a lack of resorption pits for replacement teeth; and possibly the presence of more than one wave of developing replacement teeth per locus. There are no osteological modifications suggestive of an intramandibular hinge, but postmortem displacement of the angular-prearticular-surangular complex in multiple specimens suggests that there might have been some degree of mobility in the lower jaw based on soft-tissue modifications. Using phylogenetic analyses on a data-set comprising 473 morphological characters and 46 DNA loci, we infer that a monophyletic Palaeovaranidae Georgalis, 2017, including Eosaniwa Haubold, 1977, lies on the stem ofVaranidae Merrem, 1820, basal to various Cretaceous Mongolian taxa. We transfer feisti to the new genus Paranecrosaurus n. gen. Analysis of gut contents reveals only the second known specimen of the cryptozoic lizard Cryptolacerta hassiaca Muller, Hipsley, Head, Kardjilov, Hilger, Wuttke & Reisz, 2011, confirming a diet that was at least partly carnivorous; the preservation of the teeth of C. hassiaca suggests that the gastric physiology of Paranecrosaurus feisti (Stritzke, 1983) n. comb. had high acidity but low enzyme activity. Based on the foregoing and linear discriminant function analysis, we reconstruct P. feisti n. comb., as a powerful, widely roaming, faunivorous-carnivorous stem monitor lizard with a sensitive snout. If the molecular phylogeny of anguimorphs is correct, then many of the features shared by Helodermatidae Gray, 1837 and Varanidae must have arisen convergently, partly associated with diet. 17. An enigmatic specialized new eutherian mammal from the Late Cretaceous of Western Europe (Northern Pyrenees).

Abstract: We report the discovery of a new Late Cretaceous eutherian mammal, Azilestes ragei n. gen., n. sp. from the Mas-d’Azil northern Pyrenean site (France), which is among the largest known. It is only known from a broken lower jaw found in uppermost levels of the Grès de Labarre Formation (early Maastrichtian). Despite its poor preservation, it displays distinctive specialized features with respect to known Cretaceous eutherians. This includes a reduced premolar formula and shortened and robust jaw, an incipient hypolophid, and a cingular-like postcristid and hypoconulid. The phylogenetic analysis suggests indeed a possible stem relationship between Azilestes n. gen. and some clades of herbivorous Cenozoic placentals, but with weak support. Several molar features reminiscent of the Zhelestidae, especially Valentinella Tabuce, Vianey-Liaud & Garcia, 2004, support instead that Azilestes n. gen. is a basal eutherian showing early specialization in a herbivorous diet convergent with some crown placentals. Whatever the suprageneric position of Azilestes n. gen., which remains to be clarified with additional material, its discovery highlights a significant diversity of European Cretaceous eutherians in contrast to their very poor fossil record. Abstract: A new genus, Liusius , is established for the East Asian leucosiid crab Leucosia longimaculata Chen & Fang, 1991. The new genus differs from Leucosia s. str. and allied genera in having the shaft of the male first gonopod coiled eight times on its axis, bearing a distal setose lobe topped by a digitate process, and prominently swollen female vulvae opening distad. The molecular phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rDNA supports the morphological observations. The species is redescribed and illustrated. Abstract: Abelisaurid theropods dominated the predator role across Gondwana during the Late Cretaceous. They are characterized by highly reduced forelimbs and one of the most specialized cranial morphologies among carnivorous dinosaurs, exemplified by a broad skull, short rostrum, high occipital region, and highly kinetic intramandibular joint, suggestive of a specialized feeding strategy. Late Cretaceous abelisaurids are known from some remarkably complete taxa with well-preserved skulls. However, little is known about the pattern of character transformation that led to their highly modified condition because there are no well-preserved abelisaurids before the Late Cretaceous. Here we report a basal abelisaurid from the Early Cretaceous of Brazil that preserves a complete skull and reveals an early stage in the cranial evolution of the group. It lacks the specialized temporal and mandibular features characteristic of derived abelisaurids, including the kinetic intramandibular joint and knoblike dorsal projection of the parietals. Abstract: Nowadays, the odontocete family Kogiidae is monotypic and only includes two species of diminutive relatives of the great sperm whale Physeter Linnaeus, 1758. Conversely, a growing body of extinct species indicates that kogiids were diverse and disparate during the late Neogene. The fossil record of Kogiidae is, to date, represented by several cranial specimens from Mio-Pliocene localities of the Northern Hemisphere, with the significant Southern Hemisphere exception of the Pisco Formation of Peru, from which two genera were known so far, including Scaphokogia Muizon, 1988, a highly idiosyncratic form characterised by a distinctly spoon-shaped dorsal surface of the neurocranium and a downturned semicylindrical rostrum, which is even placed in its own subfamily Scaphokogiinae. Here, we report on two skulls of Kogiidae from the Messinian (upper Miocene) portion of the Pisco Formation exposed in the East Pisco Basin. These two skulls are referred to the new taxon Platyscaphokogia landinii n. gen., n. sp., which our phylogenetic analysis recovers as sister group of Scaphokogia, within the subfamily Scaphokogiinae. Although Platyscaphokogia n. gen. shares with Scaphokogia a remarkably spoon-like dorsal aspect of the neurocranium, it retains a non-pachyostotic, dorsoventrally thin rostrum that distinctly points anteriorly; as such, Platyscaphokogia n. gen. might be regarded as testifying an early stage in the evolution of the scaphokogiine cranial anatomy. Morphofunctional and palaeoecological considerations allow for hypothesising that Platyscaphokogia n. gen. was a raptorial physeteroid that foraged along the water column in relatively open-sea palaeoenvironments. In conclusion, our finds expand the palaeodiversity of Kogiidae, as well as our knowledge on the late Miocene sperm whales of the southeastern Pacific, and further suggest that the fossil content of the East Pisco Basin is crucial for reconstructing the Neogene evolutionary history of physeteroids. Abstract: In this paper, a new genus and species of arvicolid rodent is described from the late early Pleistocene levels of the sections of Fuente Nueva 3 (Guadix-Baza Basin, Granada, southern Iberian Peninsula), and Quibas (Murcia, southeastern Iberian Peninsula). The majority of Manchenomys n. gen. molars lacks roots, and the morphology of the first lower molar (m1) is simple, with a short and rounded anteroconid complex and widely confluent triangles four and five (T4 and T5) fields. Molar enamel is predominantly negatively differentiated (Mimomys-type). The third upper molar (M3) is also simple, with a short posterior cap. Manchenomys orcensis n. sp. is described from Fuente Nueva 3, and Mimomys oswaldoreigi Agustí, Castillo & Galobart, 1993 from Gilena 2 and Barranco de los Conejos is recombined as Manchenomys oswaldoreigi n. comb. The chronostratigraphic range of Manchenomys n. gen. covers the upper Matuyama geomagnetic chron, between 1.8 Ma (post- Olduvai subchron) and 0.99 Ma (Jaramillo subchron). Manchenomys n. gen. was possibly derived from a local population of Mimomys tornensis Janossy & Meulen, 1975, an arvicolid species present in older early Pleistocene levels of Spain., Un nouveau genre et une nouvelle espèce de rongeur arvicolidé (Mammalia) du Pléistocène inférieur de l’Espagne. Dans ce travail, nous décrivons un nouveau genre et une nouvelle espèce d’arvicolidé Manchenomys orcensis n. gen., n. sp., provenant des niveaux de la partie supérieure du Pléistocène inférieur des sections de Fuente Nueva 3 (bassin de Guadix-Baza, Grenade, sud de l’Espagne) et de Quibas (Murcia, sud-est de l’Espagne). Les molaires de Manchenomys orcensis n. gen., n. sp. ne présentent pas de racines, mais leur ligne sinueuse peut commencer à se fermer. La morphologie de la première molaire inférieure (m1) est typiquement mimomyienne, avec un dessin dentaire simple, un complexe de l’antéroconide court et arrondi et des triangles T4 et T5 largement confluents. L’émail est négativement differencié (type Mimomys) ou parfois indifferencié. La troisième molaire supérieure (M3) présente aussi un dessin typiquement mimomyien, avec une partie postérieure courte et simple. Une deuxième espèce décrite antérieurement Manchenomys oswaldoreigi n. comb., qui avait été incluse dans le genre Mimomys Forsyth Major, 1902, est aussi ajoutée au nouveau genre. Abstract: Doflein (1904) accidentally transposed the figures for the third maxillipeds of two species of pinnotherid crabs he described, a mistake which has taxonomic consequences. The species he described, Pinnotheresvillosissimus Doflein, 1904, from Sumatra, is here referred to its own genus, Trichobezoares n. gen. The specimen Doflein identified as “Pinnotheres sp.” from South Africa was referred to a new species, Pinnotheres dofleini by Lenz (in Lenz & Strunck, 1914) partly based on Doflein’s (1904) incorrect figure of the third maxilliped. To stabilize the taxonomy of this species, Doflein’s specimen is selected as the lectotype; fixing the species as a member of Afropinnotheres Manning, 1993. Pinnotherespilumnoides Nobili, 1906 (Djibouti) was differentiated from the taxon T. villosissimus partially on differences in the third maxilliped. It is redescribed, figured and shown to be a second species of Trichobezoares. The correct authorship for the species established in Lenz & Strunck (1914) is also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: During surveys in the Brazilian Amazon, Atlantic Forest and Caatinga, several species of poroid Hymenochaetaceae were collected. Of the collected specimens, ITS and LSU sequences were generated and phylogenetic analyses performed. From morphological and phylogenetic inferences, Sclerotus Xavier de Lima, gen. nov. is described based on collections of Phellinus extensus, while Inonotus parvisetus V.R.T. Oliveira, Xavier de Lima & Gibertoni, sp. nov., Tropicoporus flabellatus V.R.T. Oliveira, J.R.C. Oliveira-Filho, Xavier de Lima & Gibertoni, sp. nov and T. nullisetus Xavier de Lima, V.R.T. Oliveira & Gibertoni, sp. nov. are described as new species. Sclerotus gen. nov. is characterized by the strongly ventricose hymenial setae and the black line that is exposed as a dark crust. Inonotus parvisetum can be differentiated from similar species of the genus by the smaller tramal setae. Tropicoporus flabellatus sp. nov. produces the thinnest basidiomata in the genus, and does not develop a dark crust in the pileus surface, while in T. nullisetus sp. nov. hymenial setae is absent. The other specimens clustered within I. micantissimus (Rick) Rajchemb., I. rickii (Pat.) Reid, T. linteus (Berk. & M.A.Curtis) L.W.Zhou & Y.C.Dai, T. stratificans G.Coelho & Yurchenko and T. tropicalis (M.J.Larsen & Lombard) L.W.Zhou & Y.C.Dai. Here T. stratificans is recorded for the first time outside the type locality. Illustrations of the species and keys for Inonotus sensu lato are provided., Au cours de prospections en Amazonie brésilienne, dans la forêt atlantique et la Caatinga, plusieurs espèces de Hymenochaetaceae poroïdes ont été collectées. Abstract: International audience; Thylacocephala is an enigmatic ingroup of Euarthropoda. Th ylacocephalans, only known from Pal-aeozoic and Mesozoic fossils, are characterized by a particular anatomy: a prominent folded shield enveloping most of the body, large compound eyes, three pairs of large, presumably raptorial ap-pendages and a trunk with 8-22 stout segments bearing swimming appendages. However, lifestyle(s) and phylogenetic relationships of Th ylacocephala are still largely unknown. Th is study is focused on thylacocephalans from the Mazon Creek Lagerstätte (c. 307 Ma, Middle Pennsylvanian, Carbonifer-ous). A new species is described from a siderite concretion of Mazon Creek: Eodollocaris keithfl intin. gen., n. sp. Th e new species displays a particular mixture of characters typical for Palaeozoic species on the one hand and Mesozoic species on the other hand. Additionally, new details of the appendages and of the trunk are provided for already known species from the same locality, namely Concavicaris georgeorum Schram, 1990 and Convexicaris mazonensis Schram, 1990. Une nouvelle espèce est décrite à partir d’une concrétion sidéritique de Mazon Creek : Eodollocaris keihtfl inti n. gen., n. sp. La nouvelle espèce présente un mélange particulier de caractères typiques des espèces paléozoïques d’un côté et d’espèces mésozoïques de l’autre. De plus, de nouveaux détails sur les appendices et sur le tronc sont donnés pour des espèces déjà connues de la même localité, à savoir Concavicaris georgeorum Schram, 1990 et Convexicaris mazonensis Schram, 1990. Ces nouvelles informations sont utiles pour mieux comprendre le mode de vie possible de ces thylacocéphales.

25. Laurentaeglyphea, un nouveau genre pour la seconde espèce actuelle de Glyphéide récemment découverte (Crustacea Décapoda Glypheidae)

Abstract: Abstract: In 1975, a recent member of a large group of Crustacea Decapoda was described as Neoglyphea inopinata Forest & de Saint Laurent, until now only known as fossils and presumed extinct since the Eocene. The only known specimen had been collected in the Philippine waters, in 1908, at a depth of 200 m. During the next years, three oceanographical expeditions gave more adult specimens, allowing complete study of the species. From its morphology, it appeared that the status attributed to glypheids in the past in the classification of Decapoda Crustacea was quite erroneous. This group, until then considered as related to Palinurids (rock lobsters) was in fact much closer to Astacids (lobster, crayfish, etc.). In 1982, N. inopinata was recorded from the other side of Equator, from the Timor Sea. In October 2005, a second living species of glypheid was discovered southwest of New Caledonia. It was named Neoglyphea neocaledonica B. Richer de Forges, 2006. However, important and significant differences set apart the two species, especially the ornamentation of the cephalothorax, the conformation of the cephalic part and the proportions of epistom and thoracic appendages, being much more robust. Abstract: International audience; The Alps are a hotspot of biodiversity in Europe with many Lepidoptera species still to be discovered. Here we describe a new gracillariid genus and species, Mercantouria neli gen. n. and sp. n. The morphology of the male genitalia is highly differentiated with unique features. DNA barcodes show that its nearest neighbor is the North American species ‘Caloptilia’ scutellariella (Braun, 1923). M. neli is known from four adults (two males and two females) collected at two localities in the French Alps. Its host plant and life cycle remain unknown.

Based on new observations, the concepts of some erymid genera are updated and new diagnoses are proposed for Eryma Meyer, 1840, Enoploclytia M'Coy, 1849, Palaeastacus Bell, 1850, Pustulina Quenstedt, 1857, and Stenodactylina Beurlen, 1928, including carapace groove pattern, first pereiopods and also a new structure - the post-orbital area - located in front of the cephalic region. The new genus Tethysastacus n. gen. is erected with Tethysastacus tithonius n. comb. (Valanginian, France) as type species. Five new species are described: Eryma vocontii n. sp. (Albian, France), Enoploclytia augustobonae n. sp. (Barremian, France), Enoploclytia gigantea n. sp. (Albian, Texas), Pustulina occitana n. sp. (Berriasian, France), and Pustulina colossea n. sp. Abstract: International audience; Although recognized as an outstanding hotspot of biodiversity for both flora and fauna, the Mercan- tour massif remains almost totally unexplored in terms of its groundwater fauna. This work presents the first overview of groundwater oligochaete assemblages of the Mercantour National Park after a standardized exploration of both consolidated (fractured massif ) and unconsolidated (porous) aquifers. About 40 species of oligochaetes were found at 49 stations representative of the main hydrogeological basins of the Mercantour National Park, from both spring and hyporheic zone habitats. Five stygo- biont species are identified, probably all new to science, of which two are formally described: Aber- rantidrilus stephaniae Martin n. gen., n. sp. (Naididae Ehrenberg, 1828, Phallodrilinae Brinkhurst, 1971) and Marionina sambugarae Schmelz n. sp., a species belonging to the widespread Marionina argentea (Michaelsen, 1889) species complex (Enchytraeidae Vejdovský, 1879). The freshwater sub- terranean species formerly attributed to Abyssidrilus Erséus, 1992 are transferred to Aberrantidrilus Martin n. gen., which means that Abyssidrilus is now restricted to its marine, abyssal species. A dozen of the Mercantour species can be considered as stygophiles. Most stygobiont species are recorded from hyporheic habitats, and stygophiles have a more balanced distribution between both kinds of habitats. The near absence of stygoxene species from the hyporheic zone suggests that this habitat is less affected by the epigean environment than springs. The dominance of enchytraeids among the groundwater oligochaete fauna is here confirmed, and the lumbriculid genus Trichodrilus Claparède, 1862 is also a characteristic faunistic element of the underground freshwater oligochaete communities. The possibility that Aberrantidrilus cuspis n. comb. sensu Sambugar et al. (1999) is a complex of cryptic species is discussed in the framework of recent progress in the knowledge of groundwater biodiversity.; Les oligochètes (Annelida, Clitellata) des eaux souterraines du Parc national du Mercantour (France), avec la description d’un nouveau genre et de deux nouvelles espèces stygobiontes. Bien qu’il soit reconnu comme un remarquable point chaud de biodiversité pour sa flore et sa faune, le massif du Mercantour reste presque totalement inexploré quant à sa faune souterraine. Ce travail rapporte le premier aperçu des assemblages d’oligochètes des eaux souterraines du Parc national du Mercantour, suivant une exploration standardisée des aquifères consolidés (massif fracturé) et non consolidés (poreux). Environ 40 espèces d’oligochètes ont été trouvées dans 49 stations représen- tatives des principaux bassins hydrogéographiques du Parc national du Mercantour, ainsi que des sources et de la zone hyporhéique. Cinq espèces stygobiontes ont été identifiées, probablement toutes nouvelles pour la science, parmi lesquelles deux sont ici formellement décrites, Aberrantidri- lus stephaniae Martin n. gen., n. sp. (Naididae Ehrenberg, 1828, Phallodrilinae Brinkhurst, 1971) et Marionina sambugarae Schmelz n. sp., une espèce appartenant au complexe d’espèces Marionina argentea (Michaelsen, 1889) (Enchytraeidae Vejdovský, 1879) à large répartition. Les espèces d’eaux douces souterraines autrefois attribuées Abyssidrilus Erséus, 1992 sont transférées dans le genre Aberrantidrilus Martin n. gen., restreignant ainsi Abyssidrilus à ses espèces marines abyssales. Douze des espèces du Mercantour peuvent être considérées comme stygophiles. La plupart des espèces sty- gobiontes proviennent des habitats hyporhéiques tandis que les stygophiles se répartissent de façon plus équilibrée entre les deux types d’habitats. La quasi-absence d’espèces stygoxènes dans la zone hyporhéique suggère que cet habitat est moins affecté par l’environnement épigé que les sources. La dominance des enchytréides au sein de la faune des oligochètes des eaux souterraines est ici confirmée, ainsi que le genre Trichodrilus Claparède, 1862 en tant qu’élément faunistique le plus caractéristique des communautés d’oligochètes des eaux douces souterraines. Enfin, la possibilité qu’Aberrantidrilus cuspis n. comb. sensu Sambugar et al. (1999) soit un complexe d’espèces cryptiques est discutée dans le cadre des progrès récents dans la connaissance de la biodiversité des eaux souterraines.

35. Sirdavidia, an extroardinary new genus of Annonaceae from Gabon

Abstract: A distinctive new monotypic genus from Gabon is described in the tropical plant family Annonaceae: Sirdavidia, in honor to Sir David Attenborough. Molecular phylogenetic analyses confirm that Sirdavidia, which is very distinct from a morphological standpoint, is not nested in any existing genus of Annonaceae and belongs to tribe Piptostigmateae (subfamily Malmeoideae), which now contains a total of six genera. The genus is characterized by long acuminate leaves, fully reflexed red petals, 16–19 bright yellow, loosely arranged stamens forming a cone, and a single carpel topped by a conspicuous stigma. With just three known collections, a preliminary IUCN conservation status assessment is provided as “endangered” as well as a distribution map. The discovery of Sirdavidia is remarkable at several levels. First, it was collected near the road in one of the botanically best-known regions of Gabon: Monts de Cristal National Park. Second, its sister group is the genus Mwasumbia, also monotypic, endemic to a small area in a forest in Tanzania, some 3000 km away. Finally, the floral morphology is highly suggestive of a buzz pollination syndrome. If confirmed, this would be the first documentation of such a pollination syndrome in Magnoliidae and early-diverging angiosperms in general.

Abstract: International audience; Cette faune résulte de la brêve exploitation d’un petit niveau fossilifère mis au jour lors de l’ouverture d’une tranchée pour l’installation d’une conduite de gaz. Même si la quantité de sédiment fossilifère accessible était limitée, la diversité de la faune récoltée est du même ordre que celle de localités contemporaines. Parmi les 40 espèces de vertébrés reconnues, quelques unes sont amphibies mais la plupart est terrestre. Parmi elles, des marqueurs biochronologiques tel Issiodoromys pauffiensis Vianey-Liaud, 1987 (Rodentia, Theridomyidae) sont mieux définis. Cette espèce est comparée à la population type du niveau repère mammalien du Paléogène MP 26 (Mas-de-Pauffié, Lot; Chattien inférieur). Abstract: International audience; Cette faune résulte de la brêve exploitation d’un petit niveau fossilifère mis au jour lors de l’ouverture d’une tranchée pour l’installation d’une conduite de gaz. Même si la quantité de sédiment fossilifère accessible était limitée, la diversité de la faune récoltée est du même ordre que celle de localités contemporaines. Parmi les 40 espèces de vertébrés reconnues, quelques unes sont amphibies mais la plupart est terrestre. Parmi elles, des marqueurs biochronologiques tel Issiodoromys pauffiensis Vianey-Liaud, 1987 (Rodentia, Theridomyidae) sont mieux définis. Cette espèce est comparée à la population type du niveau repère mammalien du Paléogène MP 26 (Mas-de-Pauffié, Lot; Chattien inférieur). Abstract: Ramlibacter gen. nov. is proposed for two aerobic, chemo-organotrophic, cyst-producing soil bacterial strains. These bacteria are Gram-negative, non-flagellated rods or cysts, isolated from subdesert soil in Tataouine, Tunisia. Phylogenetic analyses of the rrs sequences of the two strains showed that they do not constitute a robust clade at the genus level with any previously described bacteria and that they are a deep branch of a clade also grouping the genera Acidovorax and Hydrogenophaga within the beta-Proteobacteria. They belong to two different species, as verified by DNA-DNA hybridization (23.5% reassociation). The type species of the genus is Ramlibacter tataouinensis sp. nov., with the type strain TTB310T (=DSM 14655T =ATCC BAA-407T =LMG 21543T). The second species is Ramlibacter henchirensis sp. nov., with the type strain TMB834T (=DSM 14656T =ATCC BAA-408T =LMG 21542T). The G + C contents of R. tataouinensis and R. henchirensis are 69.6 and 66.6 mol%, respectively.

Abstract: The genera Agrobacterium, Allorhizobium, and Rhizobium belong to the family Rhizobiaceae. However, theplacement of a phytopathogenic group of bacteria, the genus Agrobacterium, among the nitrogen-fixingbacteria and the unclear position of Rhizobium galegae have caused controversy in previous taxonomicstudies. To resolve uncertainties in the taxonomy and nomenclature within this family, the phylogeneticrelationships of generic members of Rhizobiaceae were studied, but with particular emphasis on the taxaincluded in Agrobacterium and the “R. galegae complex” (R. galegae and related taxa), using multilocussequence analysis (MLSA) of six protein-coding housekeeping genes among 114 rhizobial and agrobac-terial taxa. The results showed that R. galegae, R. vignae, R. huautlense, and R. alkalisoli formed a separateclade that clearly represented a new genus, for which the name Neorhizobium is proposed. Agrobacteriumwas shown to represent a separate cluster of mainly pathogenic taxa of the family Rhizobiaceae. A. vitisgrouped with Allorhizobium, distinct from Agrobacterium, and should be reclassified as Allorhizobium vitis,whereas Rhizobium rhizogenes was considered to be the proper name for former Agrobacterium rhizogenes.This phylogenetic study further indicated that the taxonomic status of several taxa could be resolved bythe creation of more novel genera.

Abstract: This report describes Trocara virus, a newly recognized member of the genus Alphavirus, that has been isolated from Aedes serratus mosquitoes collected at two widely separated sites in the Amazon Basin. Biological, antigenic and genetic characteristics of the new virus are given. Results of these studies indicate that Trocara virus is the first member of a newly discovered antigenic complex within the family Togaviridae genus Alphavirus. The public health and veterinary importance of Trocara virus is still unknown.

Abstract: Olianatrivia riberai n. gen., n. sp. (Mollusca, Caenogastropoda), a singular Ovulidae from the Bartonian (middle Eocene) of Catalonia (Spain). Shells of an Ovulidae species with unusual morphological features have been collected in the axial part of the Oliana anticline, Catalonia: Olianatrivia riberai n. gen., n. sp. (Mollusca, Caenogastropoda) whose shape and ornamentation remind some Triviinae. According to the chronostratigraphy of the South-Pyrenean basin, it belongs to a subrecifal facies, reworked by storm dynamics, of a Late Bartonian age (Middle Eocene). It is proposed to place O. riberai n. gen., n. sp. within the Pediculariinae, a subfamily of Ovulidae (Cypraeoidea), close to Cypropterina ceciliae (De Gregorio, 1880) from the Veronese Early Lutetian.

Abstract: 13 pages; International audience; L'une des toutes premières ammonites à coquille presque oxycône observée dans les séries fossilifères après la crise faunique de la limite Trias/Jurassique est décrite. Elle provient du Sinémurien inférieur (chronozone à Semicostatum ou à Turneri) de Bourgogne (Mavilly-Mandelot, Côte-d'Or, France). Cette nouvelle forme, Oxyarietites boletzkyi n. gen., n. sp., possède une coquille involute, comprimée et carénée dont le type clairement suboxycône est nouveau pour le Sinémurien inférieur. En raison de son aire ventrale carénée, ce taxon se rattache probablement à la super-famille des Arietitoidea Hyatt, 1875 sensu Guex (1995) mais son attribution familiale est incertaine et son origine évolutive reste énigmatique. Outre son intérêt taxonomique, cette découverte est importante car elle pose le problème de la valeur adaptative des caractères liés à la géométrie des coquilles d'ammonites. Il est actuellement admis que les coquilles involutes, comprimées et carénées de type suboxycône et oxycône favorisent significativement l'hydrodynamisme et donc la mobilité des espèces qui les possèdent. Il est surprenant que l'acquisition de ce probable avantage adaptatif n'ait pas favorisé l'implantation au sein des peuplements du nouveau taxon, qui reste une forme rare. Dans tous les cas, la découverte d'O. boletzkyi n. gen., n. sp. rajeunit d'environ 2 millions d'années la mise en place des morphologies oxycônes au cours de la phase de reconstitution de la biodiversité post-crise Trias/Jurassique.

Abstract: A new strictly anaerobic thermophilic multicellular filamentous bacterium (0.2-0.3 mu m x > 100 mu m), designated GNS-1(T), was isolated from a deep hot aquifer in France. It was non-motile, and stained Gram-negative. Optimal growth was observed at 65 degrees C, pH 7.0, and 2 g L-1 of NaCl. Strain GNS-1(T) was chemoorganotrophic fermenting ribose, glucose, galactose, arabinose, fructose, mannose, maltose, sucrose, xylose, raffinose, pyruvate, and xylan. Yeast extract was required for growth. The end products of glucose fermentation were lactate, acetate, CO2, and H-2. The G + C content of the DNA was 57.6 mol%. Its closest phylogenetic relative was Bellilinea caldifistulae with 92.5% similarity. Based on phylogenetic, genotypic and phenotypic characteristics, strain GNS-1(T) (DSM 23592(T), JCM 169801) is proposed to be assigned to a novel species of a novel genus within the class Anaerolineae (subphylum I), phylum "Chloroflexi".
