Background: The T cell-mediated delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) response is critical for elucidating cellular immune mechanisms, especially the role of memory T cells upon antigen re-exposure. This study aimed to investigate the specific effects of the immunosuppressive drugs Cyclophosphamide (CY) and Dexamethasone (DEX) on intestinal immunity and microbiota in a DTH mouse model, contributing to a more nuanced understanding of their immunomodulatory mechanisms. Methods: Female BALB/c mice were sensitized to 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB) and randomly allocated into control, CY, and DEX groups. The impact of CY and DEX on immune function was assessed through measurement of thymus and spleen indices, lymphocyte proliferation in mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs) using MTT assay, and flow cytometric analysis of T cell subsets and TCR expression. Intestinal secretory IgA (sIgA) was quantified by ELISA, and gut microbiota diversity was evaluated using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Results: CY and DEX significantly reduced the immune function in DNFB-induced sensitized mice, as indicated by decreased thymus and spleen indices, MLN enlargement, intestinal sIgA content, and ear swelling degree. Flow cytometry revealed that CY increased the proportion of total CD3+ T cells but reduced CD3+CD69+ activated T cells and CD3+TCRγ/δ+ T cells, while DEX increased CD3+CD4+ helper T cells. Both drugs induced distinct changes in gut microbiota diversity and structure, with CY enhancing α diversity and DEX reducing it. Conclusions: The study demonstrates that CY and DEX have distinct regulatory effects on the immune organ index, distribution of T cell subsets, and diversity and structure of gut microbiota on DTH-induced immune responses mice, suggesting their differential influence on intestinal mucosal immunity. Enteroendocrine cells (EECs) are gut epithelial cells that respond to intestinal contents by secreting hormones, including the incretins glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and gastric inhibitory protein (GIP), which regulate multiple physiological processes. Hormone release is controlled through metabolite-sensing proteins. Low expression, interspecies differences, and the existence of multiple EEC subtypes have posed challenges to the study of these sensors. We describe differentiation of stomach EECs to complement existing intestinal organoid protocols. CD200 emerged as a pan-EEC surface marker, allowing deep transcriptomic profiling from primary human tissue along the stomach-intestinal tract. We generated loss-of-function mutations in 22 receptors and subjected organoids to ligand-induced secretion experiments. We delineate the role of individual human EEC sensors in the secretion of hormones, including GLP-1. Bovine coronavirus (BCoV), a persistent threat to global cattle industry, has caused significant economic losses worldwide. In this study, a viral strain was isolated from the intestinal content of a diseased calve, and identified by cytopathic effects observation, indirect immunofluorescence assay and electron microscopy. Results showed that BCoV NXWZ2310 belonging to the GIIb genotype and has a three-amino-acid deletion in the serine-rich region of the N gene. Importantly, the BCoV NXWZ2310 strain exhibited strong pathogenicity, causing nasal discharge and watery diarrhea in calves for 8 and 10 days, respectively. Viral shedding was detected in nasal, throat and rectal swabs at levels reaching 106:228 copies/mL, 105:0 copies/mL and 106:692 copies/mL, respectively. Pathological examination showed that NXWZ2310 resulted in parenchymal lesions of the pulmonary lobe and significant intestinal lesions. Both the lungs and intestines displayed marked microscopic lesions with clear viral antigens present. BCoV NXWZ2310 strain with N-gene deletion mutations, caused severe respiratory and digestive disease in calves. The Rosy Litter Frog (Leptobrachella eos) is known from Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. Knowledge about the natural history of this species is virtually lacking. As a result of our field work in Son La, Nghe An, and Ha Tinh provinces of Vietnam, we provide data on the food composition of L. eos for the first time. Using the stomach-flushing method, we analyzed stomach contents of 34 individuals (23 males and 11 females) from a total of 42 frogs, with stomachs of five males and three females (19%) being empty. A total of 13 prey categories were observed in the stomachs of L. eos, with 232 items, comprising 230 items of invertebrates and two unidentified items. The most important (IRI) groups among the prey of L. eos were Blattodea (26.31%), Araneae (17.26%), Orthoptera (13.21%), Coleoptera (12.39%), and Opiliones (10.09%). There was an overlap of 51.11 % in the diet between males and females, The trophic spectrum of males comprising 11 prey categories revealed to be wider than that of females comprising nine prey categories. Despite differences in diets between the sexes, Blattodea, Orthoptera, Araneae, Coleoptera, and Opiliones represented the most important prey category for all of them. Diet is one of the most important aspects of an animal's ecology, as it reflects direct interactions with other organisms and shapes morphology, behavior, and other life history traits. Modern birds (Neornithes) have a highly efficient and phenotypically plastic digestive system, allowing them to utilize diverse trophic resources, and digestive function has been put forth as a factor in the selectivity of the end-Cretaceous mass extinction, in which only neornithine dinosaurs survived. 1 Although diet is directly documented in several early-diverging avian lineages, 2 only a single specimen preserves evidence of diet in Enantiornithes, the dominant group of terrestrial Cretaceous birds. 3 Morphology-based predictions suggest enantiornithines were faunivores, 4,5,6 although the absence of evidence contrasts with the high preservation potential and relatively longer gut-retention times of these diets. Longipteryx is an unusual Early Cretaceous enantiornithine with an elongate rostrum; distally restricted dentition 7 ; large, recurved, and crenulated teeth 8 ; and tooth enamel much thicker than other paravians. 9 Statistical analysis of rostral length, body size, and tooth morphology predicts Longipteryx was primarily insectivorous. 4,5 Contrasting with these results, two new specimens of Longipteryx preserve gymnosperm seeds within the abdominal cavity interpreted as ingesta. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is caused by the interaction between the esophageal epithelium and acidic stomach contents, which dramatically impacts the patient's quality of life. A hiatal hernia is a contributing reason to reflux. A hiatus hernia is a medical disorder characterized by the protrusion of abdominal cavity tissues, often the stomach, through the oesophageal hiatus into the mediastinum. A hiatal hernia is a common detectable abnormality during upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. The sliding hiatal hernia, usually known as Type I hiatal hernia, constitutes around 95% of all hiatal hernias, whereas the remaining 5% are classified as paraesophageal hiatal hernias. Aim and Objectives: The objective of the research was to determine the prevalence of hiatal hernia (HH) in individuals diagnosed with Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), establish a comparison between the acid reflux pattern in patients with and without HH, and investigate the correlation between erosive gastroesophageal reflux (GER) and HH. Materials and Methods: We analyzed a cohort of 64 individuals (30 male, 34 female) diagnosed with GERD. The patients who first reported upper gastrointestinal symptoms and subsequently underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy at SCB MCH, Cuttack. The time frame spanning from April 2022 until July 2023. This study investigated the occurrence rate of hiatal hernia (HH) in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), the acid reflux pattern, and the correlation between body mass index and erosive esophagitis with HH. RESULTS: Among the 64 patients including 30 men (46.875%) and 34 females (53.125%) who had upper gastrointestinal symptoms, 11 patients (17.19%) were diagnosed with hiatus hernia. Among the 11 instances described, 9 patients (81.81%) were diagnosed with sliding type hiatus hernia, whereas 2 patients (18.18%) had rolling type. The statistical mean age of the patients was 44.0 ± 9.6 years. The hernia size was seen to be small in 6 instances (54.54%), medium in 3 cases (27.27%), and big in 2 cases (18.18%). No substantial disparity in body mass indices was seen between individuals diagnosed with HH and GERD. Highly significant correlations were seen between HH and GERD (P≤ 0.05). Conclusion: there is a strong correlation of 17.19% between hiatal hernia and GERD. Early detection and prompt treatment or surgical intervention decrease the negative health outcomes linked to hiatus hernia and acid reflux. Exploited forage fishes serve a dual role in marine ecosystems by supporting directed fisheries and predator productivity, and thus both harvest and predatory removals should be accounted for when developing stock assessments and evaluating management trade-offs. Predator catch and stomach content data collected on the Northeast US Shelf from 1978 to 2019 by two fisheries-independent surveys were combined within multivariate spatiotemporal models to estimate time-series of consumptive removals during spring and fall for four commercially exploited prey; Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus), silver hake (Merluccius bilinearis), butterfish (Peprilus triacanthus), and longfin squid (Doryteuthis pealeii). Seasonal consumption trends were mostly synchronous for Atlantic herring and silver hake, asynchronous for butterfish and longfin squid, and predatory removals were generally greater during fall. Consumption has increased since the 1990s for all prey except Atlantic herring and butterfish during fall, which coincides with the widespread implementation of harvest constraints meant to rebuild predator and prey populations. These time-series were linked to hypothesized drivers using state-space regression models; prey availability (bottom-up; positive relationships) and commercial catch (top-down; primarily negative relationships) were the strongest predictors of consumption. Although the mechanisms underlying these relationships remain unresolved, these linkages highlight connections among the systemic drivers of productivity on the Northeast Shelf. Small pelagic fish (SPF) are crucial in marine food webs, transferring energy from plankton to higher trophic levels. This study focuses on herring (Clupea harengus) and sprat (Sprattus sprattus), addressing knowledge gaps in their feeding ecology in a nursery area, the Dutch Wadden Sea. We conducted a year-long, monthly survey, and used DNA metabarcoding to analyse zooplankton samples and stomach contents of two size classes of herring and sprat. Intra-, interspecific, and seasonal variations in fish condition, stomach fullness, and diet composition, along with selective feeding, were studied. Our study showed that condition and diet composition of herring and sprat, along with zooplankton density, exhibited a clear seasonal pattern. Juvenile herring and sprat displayed opportunistic feeding behaviour, rather than showing distinct prey selection. Besides copepods, we regularly observed (larvae of) benthic invertebrates in their diet. This emphasizes the crucial role of SPF as energy transfer agents, not solely between trophic levels, but also from benthic to pelagic habitats. Furthermore, fish post-larvae were part of the diet of larger herring (10–15 cm). Because of its unprecedented temporal and taxonomical detail, this study advances the understanding of seasonal dynamics of dominant components at the base of the Wadden Sea food web. Simple Summary: The poultry meat industry is a significant agri-food sector worldwide. Preslaughter operations are crucial as they impact animal welfare, meat quality, and food safety. Despite their importance, few studies focus on broiler preslaughter processes in hot environments. Effective planning, handling, and monitoring are essential to improve conditions and reduce stress, ensuring better meat quality and animal welfare. Poultry production faces significant challenges, including high feed prices, diseases, and thermal stress, which impact broiler welfare and productivity. Despite advances in cooling technologies and ventilation, preslaughter operations still lead to considerable losses. This review highlights the need for the improved management of thermal environments and animal logistics. Preslaughter operations typically involve fasting broilers for 8–12 h to reduce gastrointestinal contents and contamination. Following fasting, broilers are caught, crated, and transported. Stress levels vary based on distance and conditions, with manual catching often causing stress and injuries. Catching should occur during cooler periods to minimise these issues, and transport conditions must be carefully managed. Lairage, the waiting period after transport, should be kept short (1–2 h) in climate-controlled environments to avoid stress and deterioration. Proper handling and efficient unloading are essential to prevent injuries and reduce economic losses. Stunning methods, such as electronarcosis and a controlled atmosphere, aim to minimise suffering before slaughter, though practices vary culturally and religiously. Logistics and real-time monitoring technology are crucial for enhancing animal welfare during transportation. Effective planning and the optimisation of transport processes is vital for reducing stress and losses, especially with regard to rising global temperatures and production demands. The current study tested the hypothesis that an increase in the ionic levels (Na+, Cl--, Ca2+, Mg2+, and K+) in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), and hepatosomatic index (HSI), gonadosomatic index (GSI), and Fulton's condition factor (FCF) are associated with the reproduction period of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen). So, we verified ionic levels of the fluid phase of the different portions of the GIT content, HSI, GSI, and FCF of silver catfish in different seasons in a dam in southern Brazil. The highest Na+ and Cl-- levels in GIT were found in spring. The stomach's Na+ and Cl-- values were lower than the other segments. The K+ and Ca2+ levels in GIT were higher in winter, except in the stomach, where the values increased in summer. The highest K+ levels were reported in the anterior intestine. The highest Ca2+ levels in winter and spring were reported in the anterior and mid-intestines. In summer, the Mg2+ levels in the intestine were lower. The values of GSI and FCF were higher in winter and spring, and those of HSI were higher in winter. Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) have been increasingly used as rodent models in recent years, especially for SARS‐CoV‐2 since the pandemic. However, the physiology of this animal model is not yet well‐understood, even less when considering the digestive tract. Generally, the gastrointestinal microbiome influences the immune system, drug metabolism, and vaccination efficacy. However, a detailed understanding of the gastrointestinal microbiome of hamsters is missing. Therefore, we analyzed 10 healthy 11‐week‐old RjHan:AURA hamsters fed a pelleted standard diet. Their gastrointestinal content was sampled (i.e., forestomach, glandular stomach, ileum, cecum, and colon) and analyzed using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. Results displayed a distinct difference in the bacterial community before and after the cecum, possibly due to the available nutrients and digestive functions. Next, we compared hamsters with the literature data of young‐adult C57BL/6J mice, another important animal model. We sampled the same gastrointestinal regions and analyzed the differences in the microbiome between both rodents. Surprisingly, we found strong differences in their specific gastrointestinal bacterial communities. For instance, Lactobacillaceae were more abundant in hamsters' forestomach and ileum, while Muribaculaceae dominated in the mouse forestomach and ileum. Similarly, in mouse cecum and colon, Muribaculaceae were dominant, while in hamsters, Lachnospiraceae and Erysipelotrichaceae dominated the bacterial community. Molecular strains of Muribaculaceae in both rodent species displayed some species specificity. This comparison allows a better understanding of the suitability of the Syrian hamster as an animal model, especially regarding its comparability to other rodent models. Using oral swabs to collect the remnants of stomach content regurgitation during rumination in dairy cows can replicate up to 70% of the ruminal bacterial community, offering potential for broad-scale population-based studies on the rumen microbiome. The swabs collected from dairy cows often vary widely with respect to sample quality, likely due to several factors such as time of sample collection and cow rumination behavior, which may limit the ability of a given swab to accurately represent the ruminal microbiome. One such factor is the color of the swab, which can vary significantly across different cows. Here, we hypothesize that darker-colored swabs contain more rumen contents, thereby better representing the ruminal bacterial community than lightercolored swabs. To address this, we collected oral swabs from 402 dairy cows and rumen samples from 13 cannulated cows on a research farm in Wisconsin, United States and subjected them to 16S rRNA sequencing. In addition, given that little is known about the ability of oral swabs to recapitulate the ruminal fungal community, we also conducted ITS sequencing of these samples. To correlate swab color to the microbiota we developed and utilized a novel imaging approach to colorimetrically quantify each swab from a range of light to dark. We found that swabs with increasing darkness scores were significantly associated with increased bacterial alpha diversity (p < 0.05). Lighter swabs exhibited greater variation in their community structure, with many identified amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) categorized as belonging to known bovine oral and environmental taxa. Our analysis of the fungal microbiome found that swabs with increasing darkness scores were associated with decreased alpha diversity (p < 0.05) and were also significantly associated with the ruminal solids fungal community, but not with the ruminal liquid community. Our study refines the utility of oral swabs as a useful proxy for capturing the ruminal microbiome and demonstrates that swab color is an important factor to consider when using this approach for documenting both the bacterial and fungal communities. Background: Wheat germ is known for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and disease resistance properties in animals. However, its effect on the gut of Sichuan white geese remains unclear. Method: In this study, thirty 250-day-old geese were divided into three equal groups, the control group, LWG group (21.8% wheat germ) and HWG group (43.6% wheat germ), the experiment lasted 12 weeks. We assessed various aspects of geese intestinal health, including barrier function, digestibility, antioxidant capacity, immunity, microbiota, and metabolism. Results: The study revealed a significant increase in villus height (VH), villus height-to-crypt depth (VH/CD) ratio, amylase, and lipase activities in the duodenum and ileum, increased putrescine levels in the duodenum and jejunum, as well as spermidine levels in the jejunum (P < 0.05). LWG increased the total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) in the duodenum, while decreasing levels of intestinal malondialdehyde (MDA), serum lipopolysaccharide (LPS), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and diamine oxidase (DAO) activity (P < 0.05). Furthermore, LWG increased the relative abundance of Oscillospiraceae_unclassified, Ligilactobacillus, and Roseburia, as well as increased levels of acetic acid, butyric acid, and valeric acid, while decreasing the relative abundance of Subdoligranulum, Flavonifractor, and Klebsiella. Additionally, we observed 17 up-regulated genes and 25 down-regulated genes in the jejunum, which are associated with the cell cycle and immunity. These genes play roles in pathways such as the p53 signaling pathway, cell cycle regulation, and pathways associated with immune modulation. On the other hand, HWG increased intestinal VH and spermidine levels, as well as amylase and lipase activities in the duodenum (P < 0.05). It also elevated ileal T-AOC and sIgA levels (P < 0.05), while reducing intestinal MDA content, serum LPS levels, DAO activity, and propionic acid in cecum contents (P < 0.05). Moreover, HWG increased the relative abundance of Ligilactobacillus, Oscillospiraceae_unclassified, and Roseburia (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Overall, wheat germ diets, particularly the LWG diet demonstrated the ability to enhance antioxidant capacity, digestibility, immunity, and barrier properties of the intestinal tract, while modulating the gut microbiota and metabolism. During the 1940s, aspiration of stomach contents was recognized as a serious problem during labor, which is why fluid and food restriction was adopted for women who would undergo general anesthesia. Currently, the practice of generalized food restriction is a routine that is being discontinued. This review aims to map the evidence on the effects of the intake of foods, supplements and drinks in women on labor outcomes. To that end, documents investigating this topic in pregnant women admitted for uncomplicated deliveries in maternity wards, published from 2013 onwards, will be assessed. This interval was defined based on the publication by Singata et al., who carried out a systematic review on the benefits and harms of oral fluid intake or food restriction during labor. The scoping review methods of the JBI and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Review (PRISMA) were followed. Firstly, a preliminary search was carried out to identify the existence of similar scoping reviews or protocols, as well as the keywords and MeSH descriptors in the titles and abstracts, with a view to developing a complete search strategy. Subsequently, a search will be carried out in the Cochrane Library, Medline/PubMed, Embase, SCOPUS and Web of Science databases. The search strategy will be adapted for each of these databases. Finally, a reverse search will be carried out using the references of the included studies. The obtained documents will be imported into Rayyan for duplicate detection and removal. Two independent reviewers will read the titles and abstracts, observing the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The data extraction from each included study will be carried out independently by two reviewers, using the extraction form created for this purpose. Simple Summary: We identified a large number of core gut flora and key metabolites associated with muscle elasticity by integrating macrogenomic and metabolomic techniques, thus providing insights into the molecular mechanisms explaining the differences in muscle quality in the large yellow croaker (LYC, Larimichthys crocea). We further constructed an association model between gut flora and metabolites, which offers a new perspective on the potential mechanisms by which the LYC gut flora influences muscle quality via the regulation of the intestinal metabolism. Additionally, our study not only provides new insights into the gut microbiota–metabolism–muscle axis, but also strong support for future research on muscle quality trait improvement in LYC. The large yellow croaker (LYC, Larimichthys crocea) is highly regarded for its delicious taste and unique flavor. The gut microbiota has the ability to affect the host muscle performance and elasticity by regulating nutrient metabolism. The purpose of this study is to establish the relationship between muscle quality and intestinal flora in order to provide reference for the improvement of the muscle elasticity of LYC. In this study, the intestinal contents of high muscle elasticity males (IEHM), females (IEHF), and low muscle elasticity males (IELM) and females (IELF) were collected and subjected to metagenomic and metabolomic analyses. Metagenomic sequencing results showed that the intestinal flora structures of LYCs with different muscle elasticities were significantly different. The abundance of Streptophyta in the IELM (24.63%) and IELF (29.68%) groups was significantly higher than that in the IEHM and IEHF groups. The abundance of Vibrio scophthalmi (66.66%) in the IEHF group was the highest. Based on metabolomic analysis by liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometry, 107 differentially abundant metabolites were identified between the IEHM and IELM groups, and 100 differentially abundant metabolites were identified between the IEHF and IELF groups. Based on these metabolites, a large number of enriched metabolic pathways related to muscle elasticity were identified. Significant differences in the intestinal metabolism between groups with different muscle elasticities were identified. Moreover, the model of the relationship between the intestinal flora and metabolites was constructed, and the molecular mechanism of intestinal flora regulation of the nutrient metabolism was further revealed. The results help to understand the molecular mechanism of different muscle elasticities of LYC and provide an important reference for the study of the mechanism of the effects of LYC intestinal symbiotic bacteria on muscle development, and the development and application of probiotics in LYC. By using an in vitro fermentation technique, we evaluated the nutritional characteristics of three feeds for captive sloths by incubating samples of these feeds with the stomach contents of sloths. Our findings indicate that the leaves of plants from the genera Pterodon sp. and Inga sp. show potential for feeding Bradypus variegatus sloths in captivity, with particular emphasis on the former, which demonstrated the best results for protein digestibility, fiber digestion rates, and total fermentation gas volume. We recommend careful attention to the fiber content of Cecropia sp. plants due to possible negative effects on dry matter intake. It is suggested that this plant be fed in combination with other feeds containing less fiber to allow for selection by the animals. This study aimed to evaluate the nutritive value of three feeds (Cecropia sp., Pterodon sp., and Inga sp.) for sloths (Bradypus variegatus), based on nutritional composition and in vitro gas production. After a 14-day adaptation period to these feeds, approximately 500 g of gastric contents were collected from three female sloths, processed, and incubated with the food samples to evaluate digestibility and in vitro degradation kinetics. Regarding the nutritional composition, the neutral detergent fiber (NDFcp) content was higher with 404 g kg−1 DM (p = 0.001) in the leaves of Cecropia sp. The non-fibrous carbohydrate contents were greater with 499 g kg−1 DM in Pterodon sp. (p = 0.002). The greatest cellulose content (211 g kg−1 DM) was found in the leaves of C. pachystachya, as well as the lowest value of 143 g kg−1 DM for hemicellulose. Significant differences in the in vitro digestibility of crude protein (p = 0.041) were observed, with Inga sp. showing the highest value at 547 g kg−1 DM. In terms of kinetic parameters, Pterodon sp. exhibited higher total gas production (Vt) at 99 mL (p = 0.023) and digestion rates of fibrous carbohydrates (kdFC) at 0.0223%/h (p = 0.020) (p < 0.05). The leaves of Pterodon sp. and Inga sp. showed potential as suitable feeds for B. variegatus, while Cecropia sp. may have negative effects on dry matter intake due to its high NDF content, because of possible repletion effects on the stomach. Long‐term morphological changes in the tissue surrounding the artificial anal sphincter can cause biomechanical compatibility problems, which seriously affect the clinical application of the artificial anal sphincter.In this paper, the superelasticity of shape memory alloys was utilized to design and fabricate a biomechanically compatible constant force clamping artificial anal sphincter. An in vitro simulation system was constructed to verify the effectiveness, safety, and constant force characteristics of the artificial anal sphincter.The experimental results demonstrated that the artificial anal sphincter could be effectively closed with no leakage of the liquid‐like intestinal contents, which are most likely to leak. Village chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) are commonly reared in rural households of South Africa and other developing countries. They play a vital role as a primary source of protein through the provision of meat and eggs. The chicken gut microbiota plays an important role in chicken's immune system, its health, physiological development of the gut, digestion of food, nutrient absorption and productivity. Thus, it is imperative to critically investigate the chicken microbial composition in order to develop effective disease control measures and increase production. In this present study, microbial DNA was isolated from 34 non-descript mixed gender matured village chickens' intestinal contents followed by high throughput Illumina sequencing targeting 16S rRNA gene. Senwamokgope village had the largest microbiota composition as compared to Itieleni and Thakgalang villages. Overall, Firmicutes (74%) was the most abundant phylum observed, followed by Proteobacteria (8%), Actinobateria (5%), and Bacteroidota (3%). At the genus level, Lactobacillus was the dominant bacteria. Other genera found included Sphingomonas (7%), Cutibacterium (4%), and Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1 (2%). The richness of female intestinal microbiota was higher compared to the male microbiota. Background: Perioperative reflux aspiration presents a grave concern during sedation or general anesthesia, particularly when solid gastric contents prompt acute upper respiratory obstruction, potentially resulting in fatal consequences for patients. Currently, there are limited means for promptly assessing solid gastric contents in clinical settings. Therefore, this study examined the efficacy of ultrasound assessment for solid gastric contents, offering a rapid and non-invasive approach for early detection and decision-making regarding interventions. Methods: The study included 400 patients scheduled for upper endoscopy procedures, which encompassed both gastroscope and gastroscope combined colonoscopy examinations with sedation. Ultrasound scanning of the antrum was performed while patients were positioned semi-sitting or in the right lateral decubitus (RLD) posture. The evaluation of solid gastric contents relied on direct visual observation during endoscopy. Gastric volume measurement occurred subsequent to endoscopic suction of gastric contents. Receiver operating characteristic curves were utilized to assess the effectiveness of ultrasonography in discerning solid contents. Result: Seven patients undergoing gastroscope with sedation were found to have solid gastric contents. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of the ultrasound qualitative evaluation of solid contents were 85.7%, 99%, 60%, and 99.7%, respectively. Conclusion: Solid stomach contents can be evaluated qualitatively with reasonable accuracy using ultrasonography. Additionally, in patients undergoing upper endoscopy and assessed to have solid gastric contents with ultrasound, administration of mild sedation is recommended. Objective: Pulmonary artery hypertension (PAH) poses a significant challenge due to its limited therapeutic options and high mortality rates. The ACE2-Ang- (1-7)-Mas axis plays a pivotal role in regulating blood pressure and inhibiting myocardial remodeling. However, the precise mechanistic links between the ACE2-Ang-(1-7)-Mas axis and PAH remain poorly understood. This study aimed to elucidate the involvement of the ACE2-Ang-(1-7)-Mas axis in the development of PAH. Methods: PAH was induced in mice using Sugen5416/hypoxia, PAAT/PET ratio and PA were detected using cardiac ultrasound; inflammation related factors such as MCP-1, TNF, IL-10and IL-12p70 were detected in intestines using cytometric bead array (CBA) kits; histopathological and morphological changes in lung and intestinal tissues were assessed via HE staining and Masson staining to evaluate the progression of PAH. Immunohistochemistry and western blotting were employed to determine the expression levels of two tight junction proteins, occludin and ZO-1, in intestinal tissues. Additionally, 16SrRNA sequencing and non-targeted metabolomics by LC-MS/MS techniques were utilized to investigate the impact of the ACE2-Ang-(1-7)-Mas axis on microbial diversity and metabolomics of intestinal contents. Results: Activation of the ACE2-Ang-(1-7)-Mas axis improves heart function, reduces intestines inflammatory factors and ameliorates pathological and histological alterations in SuHx mice. This activation notably upregulated the expression of occludin and ZO-1 proteins in intestinal tissues and promoted the proliferation of SCFA-producing bacteria genera, such as g_Candidatus_ Saccharimonas. Furthermore, it enhanced the abundance of beneficial metabolites, including tryptophan and butyric acid. Conclusion: The findings suggest that modulation of the ACE2-Ang-(1-7)-Mas axis can alleviate PAH by regulating intestinal microbes and metabolites. In Amazonian streams, damming caused by road construction changes the system's hydrological dynamics and biological communities. We tested whether the degree of specialization in fish (Bryconops giacopinii) individuals is higher in pristine stream environments with intact ecological conditions than in streams dammed due to the construction of a highway in the Amazon rainforest. To achieve this, stomach content data and stable isotopes (δ13C and δ15N) in tissues with varying isotopic incorporation rates (liver, muscle, and caudal fin) were used to assess the variation in consumption of different prey over time. The indices within‐individual component (WIC)/total niche width (TNW) and individual specialization were employed to compare the degree of individual specialization between pristine and dammed streams. The condition factor and stomach repletion of sampled individuals were used to infer the intensity of intraspecific competition in the investigated streams. The species B. giacopinii, typically considered a trophic generalist, has been shown to be, in fact, a heterogeneous collection of specialist and generalist individuals. Contrary to our expectations, a higher degree of individual specialization was detected in streams dammed by the highway. In dammed streams, where intraspecific competition was more intense, individuals with narrower niches exhibited poorer body conditions than those with broader niches. This suggests that individuals adopting more restricted diets may have lower fitness, indicating that individual specialization may not necessarily be beneficial for individuals. Our results support the notion that intraspecific competition is an important mechanism underlying individual specialization in natural populations. Our results suggest that environmental characteristics (e.g., resource breadth and predictability) and competition for food resources interact in complex ways to determine the degree of individual specialization in natural populations. Ethnopharmacological relevance: Danggui Buxue decoction (DBD) is a traditional Chinese herbal formula. According to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine, the combination of Astragali Radix (AR) and Angelica sinensis (AS) is a classic prescription of tonifying qi and enriching blood. DBD has the functions of hematopoietic, immune enhancement and inflammation inhibition, usually used to treat qi and blood deficiency symptoms. Aim of the study: Cyclophosphamide (CY) can inhibit humoral and cellular immunity, leading to the overall immune disorder of the body, resulting in immunosuppressive (IS). Pre-laboratory studies confirmed the immunomodulatory effects of DBD, but its mechanisms have not been thoroughly studied. In this study, themain purpose was to determine the effects of DBD on the immune function and intestinal mucosal barrier function of IS mice induced by CY, and initially explored the immunomodulatory mechanism of DBD. Materials and Methods: 100 g of AR and 20 g of AS were accurately weighed and 0.5 g/mL of the DBD was obtained by boiling, filtration and rotary evaporation. Then, mice in the DBD group were administered 5 g/kg of DBD by gavage, positive group were administered 40 mg/kg of levamisole hydrochloride, whereas those in the control and model groups were given the corresponding volume of normal saline by gavage for 1 week. At the end of the experiment, blood, spleen, thymus, ileum and cecum contents of all the experimental mice were collected aseptically. IS mouse model induced by intraperitoneal injection of 80 mg/kg CY for three consecutive days. Pathomorphology was used to observe the physical barrier of the intestine, flow cytometry to detect splenic lymphocytes, immunohistochemistry to determine the content of intestinal barrier-associated proteins, ELISA to measure the secretion of ileal SIgA, qRTPCR to detect the mRNA expression of immune-related genes in the intestine, and high-throughput sequencing and analysis of cecum contents. Results: DBD alleviated spleen tissue damage and restored impaired immune functions, such as increased thymus index and CD4+/CD8+ subsets of spleen lymphocytes. In addition, DBD could increase ileum villi length and the ratio of villi length to crypt depth (V/C), and decrease crypt depth. Moreover, DBD administration up-regulated the expression of ZO-1, Occludin, Claudin-1, MUC-2 mRNA in ileum. And the secretions of sIgA and ZO-1 in ileum were also significantly improved. Furthermore, the administration of DBD can increase the diversity of gut microbiota, improve the composition of intestinal flora and increase the relative abundance of beneficial genus, such as Bacteroides. Conclusion: DBD alleviated CY-induced immune damage by decreasing the ratio of spleen index to CD4+/CD8+ of T lymphocyte subsets. And the intestinal barrier function of mice was by improves improving the intestinal morphology of the ileum and up-regulating the expression levels of ZO-1, MUC-2 and SIgA. To study the effect of melatonin supplementation on the gut microbes of broilers, 160 healthy 3-week-old Ross 308 broilers with similar body weights were selected and randomly divided into four groups (M0, M20, M40, and M80) supplemented with 0, 20, 40, or 80 mg/kg melatonin. The results showed that the abundance-based coverage estimator (ACE) index of cecum microorganisms was significantly lower in the M80 group. The dominant phyla of intestinal contents in the M0, M20, M40, and M80 groups were Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes. The M40 group showed an increase in the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes spp. in the intestine, while the relative abundance of Ruminococcus spp. in the intestine of the M20, M40, and M80 groups was significantly greater than that of the M0 group. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) functional analyses revealed that the supplementation of melatonin increases the expression of genes related to cellular processes (cell motility, cell growth and death, and cellular community-eukaryotes), environmental information processing (membrane transport and signal transduction), and genetic information processing (transport and transcription), and Cluster of Orthologous Groups (COG) of proteins functional analyses revealed that the supplementation of melatonin resulted in a significant increase in cellular processes and signaling (cell motility, signal transduction mechanisms, intracellular trafficking, secretion, and vesicular transport), information storage and processing (RNA processing and modification, chromatin structure and dynamics, translation, ribosomal structure, and biogenesis), metabolism (energy production and conversion, lipid transportation and metabolism, inorganic ion transport and metabolism, secondary metabolite biosynthesis, transport, and catabolism), and poorly characterized (general function prediction only). In summary, supplementation of feed with melatonin can increase the diversity of intestinal microorganisms and the relative abundance of Bacteroides and Firmicutes in the cecum, improve digestive ability and nutrient absorption ability, and positively regulate the metabolic ability of broilers. Polar cod (Boreogadus saida) is an endemic key species of the Arctic Ocean ecosystem. The ecology of this forage fish is well studied in Arctic shelf habitats where a large part of its population lives. However, knowledge about its ecology in the central Arctic Ocean (CAO), including its use of the sea‐ice habitat, is hitherto very limited. To increase this knowledge, samples were collected at the under‐ice surface during several expeditions to the CAO between 2012 and 2020, including the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) expedition. The diet of immature B. saida and the taxonomic composition of their potential prey were analysed, showing that both sympagic and pelagic species were important prey items. Stomach contents included expected prey such as copepods and amphipods. Surprisingly, more rarely observed prey such as appendicularians, chaetognaths, and euphausiids were also found to be important. Comparisons of the fish stomach contents with prey distribution data suggests opportunistic feeding. However, relative prey density and catchability are important factors that determine which type of prey is ingested. Prey that ensures limited energy expenditure on hunting and feeding is often found in the stomach contents even though it is not the dominant species present in the environment. To investigate the importance of prey quality and quantity for the growth of B. saida in this area, we measured energy content of dominant prey species and used a bioenergetic model to quantify the effect of variations in diet on growth rate potential. The modeling results suggest that diet variability was largely explained by stomach fullness and, to a lesser degree, the energetic content of the prey. Our results suggest that under climate change, immature B. saida may be at least equally sensitive to a loss in the number of efficiently hunted prey than to a reduction in the prey's energy content. Background: The porcine teschovirus (PTV) is common swine pathogen which causes a wide range of illnesses ranging from asymptomatic infection to acute fatal encephalomyelitis, diarrhoea and pneumonia. Despite of its economical importance very limited studies are available on the pathology of PTV. The present study was conducted with the objective to investigate the PTV infection and associated pathology in piglets. Methods: A total of 78 piglets below 3 months of age were necropsied and representative tissue samples along with intestinal content were collected for histopathological examination and molecular investigation during April 2019 to November 2020. The 5' UTR region of PTV was amplified via RT-PCR and further confirmed by sequencing. Thereafter, genetic characterization of the Indian PTV isolate was done on the basis of 5' UTR gene. Result: A total of seven out of 78 cases were found positive for the PTV. On necropsy the intestinal wall was thinned and distended with yellowish coloured diarrhoeic content. Congestion of serosal and mucosal vessels along with severe meningeal congestion was observed. Microscopic lesions included congestion of mucosal vessels and destruction of villous structure of jejunum along with perivascular cuffing, focal gliosis, neuronophagia, congestion of meningeal and cerebral vessels and interstitial pneumonia. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that the isolate PTV/India/IVRI-381/2020 (MW022462) and PTV/India/IVRI-1093/2020 (MW022463) were clustered with PTV-13 strain wild boar/WB2C-TV/2011/HUN (JQ429405) and PTV-2 strain Vir 6711-12/83 (AF296107) of Hungary and Germany respectively. This study reported the genotypic and pathological investigation of PTV from Indian piglets. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in feces are inextricably linked to intestinal homeostasis and can be used as potential markers for metabolic diseases. In this study, an efficient and simple method was developed for the purification of SCFAs without the need for derivatization of the samples. The SCFAs (acetic, propionic, isobutyric, butyric, isovaleric, valeric, and hexanoic acid) were extracted from a small amount (50 mg) of fecal and intestinal samples using acetone combined with solid phase extraction column (Bond Elut Plexa) enrichment. Quantitative analysis was performed using gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector. The developed method has shown very good limits of detection (LOD, 0.11–0.36 μM) and limits of quantification (LOQ, 0.38–1.21 μM) with excellent linearity (R2 ≥ 0.9998), good recovery (98.34–137.83%), and high reproducibility (RSD ≤ 1.30). The applicability of this method was also demonstrated by testing the fecal and cecum contents of different species from mammals (mice, pigs) to insects (honeybees). Seamounts can have a strong influence on the distribution and diversity of species, creating an oasis effect that may favour diversification. In order to assess how and to what extent supra- and epibenthic crustaceans can colonise these environments, the eucarid and peracarid fauna collected from the summit of the Valencia Seamount (VS), a small deep seamount (summit depth: 1056 m), rising from a depth of ca. 1850 m, in the oligotrophic Balearic Basin, was analysed. Based on a first sampling (beam trawls, plankton nets and stomach contents), and a faunal reconstruction from a sediment core (MC2, at 1151 m), the supra(epi)benthic crustaceans at the VS summit (to 1300 m) were composed of nine Eucarida and 25 Peracarida. Polycheles typhlops, Munida tenuimana, and Aristeus antennatus were the dominant species among eucarids. Among Peracarida the most abundant species were the Mysida Boreomysis arctica, the Amphipoda Rhachtropis caeca, and the Isopoda Munnopsurus atlanticus. Among Decapoda, a species with a wide amplitude in their depth distribution and small eggs (i.e., with planktotrophic larvae), showed a higher colonisation capacity. In the absence of larvae, the colonisation of peracarids depends on the amplitude of their depth distribution and only those species that reach the highest depths in the entire Balearic Basin, at least 1600–1800 m, were able to colonise the summit of VS. The natatory capacity of the species also has some influence and whole groups with low natatory capacity, such as the Desmosomatidae, were completely absent on the VS summit; however, they are distributed throughout the Balearic Basin to depths (up to about 1500 m) exceeding the depth of the seamount summit. Therefore, colonisation by peracarids must not have occurred by swimming through the entire water column, but by swimming along or just above the bottom. Remains of some suprabenthic species (mainly the isopod M. atlanticus) in MC2 and another core collected in NW Mallorca (MC3, 1114 m), i.e., out of the VS, showed how isopod diversity and size distribution changed historically. Also, after the 1960s, a decrease in primary production due to a decrease in rainfall and river runoff associated with river damming could have reduced the abundance of M. atlanticus. Chicken Parvovirus (ChPV) belongs to the genus Aveparvovirus and is implicated in enteric diseases like runting–stunting syndrome (RSS) in poultry. In RSS, chicken health is affected by diarrhea, depression, and increased mortality, causing significant economic losses in the poultry industry. This study aimed to characterize the ChPV genomes detected in chickens with RSS through a metagenomic approach and compare the molecular and evolutionary characteristics within the Aveparvovirus galliform1 species. The intestinal content of broiler flocks affected with RSS was submitted to viral metagenomics. The assembled prevalent genomes were identified as ChPV after sequence and phylogenetic analysis, which consistently clustered separately from Turkey Parvovirus (TuPV). The strain USP-574-A presented signs of genomic recombination. The selective pressure analysis indicated that most of the coding genes in A. galliform1 are evolving under diversifying (negative) selection. Protein modeling of ChPV and TuPV viral capsids identified high conservancy over the VP2 region. The prediction of epitopes identified several co-localized antigenic peptides from ChPV and TuPV, especially for T-cell epitopes, highlighting the immunological significance of these sites. However, most of these peptides presented host-specific variability, obeying an adaptive scenario. The results of this study show the evolutionary path of ChPV and TuPV, which are influenced by diversifying events such as genomic recombination and selective pressure, as well as by adaptation processes, and their subsequent immunological impact. Despite a surge in microbiota‐focused studies in teleosts, few have reported functional data on whole metagenomes as it has proven difficult to extract high biomass microbial DNA from fish intestinal samples. The zebrafish is a promising model organism in functional microbiota research, yet studies on the functional landscape of the zebrafish gut microbiota through shotgun based metagenomics remain scarce. Thus, a consensus on an appropriate sampling method accurately representing the zebrafish gut microbiota, or any fish species is lacking. Addressing this, we systematically tested four methods of sampling the zebrafish gut microbiota: collection of faeces from the tank, the whole gut, intestinal content, and the application of ventral pressure to facilitate extrusion of gut material. Additionally, we included water samples as an environmental control to address the potential influence of the environmental microbiota on each sample type. To compare these sampling methods, we employed a combination of genome‐resolved metagenomics and 16S metabarcoding techniques. We observed differences among sample types on all levels including sampling, bioinformatic processing, metagenome co‐assemblies, generation of metagenome‐assembled genomes (MAGs), functional potential, MAG coverage, and population level microdiversity. Comparison to the environmental control highlighted the potential impact of the environmental contamination on data interpretation. While all sample types tested are informative about the zebrafish gut microbiota, the results show that optimal sample type for studying fish microbiomes depends on the specific objectives of the study, and here we provide a guide on what factors to consider for designing functional metagenome‐based studies on teleost microbiomes. The diet composition of painted comber Serranus scriba was studied in the eastern central Adriatic Sea. The stomach contents of 275 individuals with a total length (TL) between 10.8 and 24.1 cm, collected by a small beach seine from January to December 2017, were analyzed. The food items in stomachs belonged to seven prey groups: Gastropoda, Bivalvia, Polychaeta, Decapoda, Isopoda, Stomatopoda and Teleostei. Overall, decapods were the most important prey group (%IRI = 54.0), followed by teleosts (%IRI = 40.4%). All other prey groups had much lower %IRI values and thus were of less importance. Painted comber had a diverse diet, feeding on a higher number of prey items (H' = 3.11), and can be considered an opportunistic feeder whose diet in the Adriatic Sea consists of different groups of benthic organisms, with a wide range of prey sizes and morphology. For fish of small and medium size (up to 20 cm TL), decapods were the most important prey, whereas large-sized individuals (> 20 cm TL) mainly consumed teleosts. Simple Summary: Sharks, as important members of marine food webs, are often targeted by commercial and sport fishing, and moreover they constitute a significant part of the bycatch along with marine mammals and turtles. Overfishing, especially of top-predator species, disrupts the entire food web through a process called "mesopredator release", where the removal of top predators leads to an increase in mid-level predators, altering the ecosystem balance. Despite their crucial ecological role, there is limited information on sharks' diets. Traditional methods like stomach content analysis and newer, less invasive techniques, such as stable isotope analysis (SIA) of muscle tissue biopsies, provide insights into their feeding habits. A study on the pyjama shark or striped catshark (Poroderma africanum), a species native to South Africa, used SIA to explore its trophic ecology. The study found that as pyjama sharks grow, their diet shifts from more planktonic species as juveniles to more benthic prey. Juvenile sharks have a more varied diet, while adults are more selective. Although the pyjama shark population is increasing, according to the IUCN, there is a lack of structured monitoring programmes and catch data. Understanding the trophic ecology of mesopredators like the pyjama shark is crucial for predicting the impacts of their predation on marine ecosystems. Sharks may occupy both intermediate and upper levels of marine food webs. They are overfished worldwide and constitute one of the largest portions of the bycatch. The removal of top-predator species has negative cascading effects on the entire food web, causing the "mesopredator release" phenomenon, which leads to an increase in mesopredators with consequent changes in the ecosystem's energetic balance. Despite their important ecological role, information on their trophic ecology is limited. This essential information can be obtained through the analysis of stomach contents and, more recently, by using less invasive techniques, such as the stable isotope analysis of muscle tissue, obtained through biopsies. Here, we analysed the trophic ecology of the pyjama shark or striped catshark Poroderma africanum, an endemic species of South Africa, by means of SIA. The results obtained from SIA were analysed using the R SIMMR and SIBER packages to estimate the contribution of potential food sources to the diet and to evaluate the extent of the trophic niches. The SIMMR outputs showed that adults select more benthic prey than juveniles, which consume more planktonic species, with juveniles being more generalist than adults, according to SIBER outputs. As assessed by IUCN, the population of P. africanum is increasing, and given its role as mesopredator, future monitoring efforts could be crucial to elucidating their potential effects in marine food webs. Introduction Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is a syndrome caused by reflux of gastric contents into the pharynx or larynx which leads to symptoms of throat clearing, cough, pain, sensation of something stuck in the throat and change in voice. Evaluation of symptoms using the Reflux Symptom Index is considered to be the basic diagnostic procedure. LPR therapy is complex and requires modification of patient’s lifestyle and habits. LPR treatment and management is supposed to reduce the acidity or stomach contents and neutralize acidopeptidic activity in larynx, pharynx and oesophagus. High dosages of PPI (proton pump inhibitors) have shown the best effects in reducing reflux. Aims and objectives: The goal of the current study is 1. To determine the effects of gastric reflux on larynx and pharynx both clinically and endoscopically. 2. To evaluate the effect of proton pump inhibitors along with lifestyle modifications on laryngeal reflux symptom index and reflux finding score. LPR was treated with PPI, alkaline alginates and standard reflux precautions (avoidance of coffee, tea, chocolate, soda, greasy, fried, fatty, and spicy foods, alcohol and smoking). Results: The study constituted of 150 patients coming to ENT OPD with symptoms of laryngopharyngeal reflux and having RSI >13. All patients were examined by 70-degree video-laryngoscope and were treated with proton pump inhibitors, alginates and lifestyle modifications. 80 of them recovered after 2 weeks of lifestyle modification and treatment and 63 recovered after a month while 7 remained symptomatic after 3 months of treatment as well. Conclusion: Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is common in ENT practice but requires careful diagnosis due to its non-specific symptoms. I examined 107 shining cuckoos that died accidentally in the northern North Island, New Zealand, during 39 years. Birds arriving on migration in spring were all in adult plumage. Juveniles occurred mainly from January to March. The sex-ratio of adults was 1:1. In several measurements, females were slightly larger than males on average, and adults slightly larger than juveniles. Gonad size suggested readiness for breeding from September to January (inclusive). Ninety-one gizzards held a total of 3754 arthropod food items. Insects (10 orders) made up around 94% of items and just two orders accounted for 79% of food items: caterpillars (larval Lepidoptera, 55%) and beetles (Coleoptera, 24%). 'Spiny' caterpillars made up roughly 8% of total caterpillars. Ladybirds (Coccinellidae) made up 21% of beetles. Shining cuckoos ate small prey, mostly 1–10 mm long (44%) and 11–20 mm long (43%). By eating hairy caterpillars and ladybirds, shining cuckoos exert predatory control on insects that other birds avoid. By gorging (up to 258 insects per stomach) the cuckoo might dampen the impact of herbivorous insects (e.g. caterpillar infestations) on plants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Food webs in ecotones linking adjacent ecosystems may depend on cross-ecosystem subsidies. In surf zones of temperate sandy beaches, higher-level consumers often rely on intertidal prey that utilize allochthonous primary production. We evaluated the importance of phytoplankton and kelp-based prey, as well as physical characteristics of beaches, to diet of a surf zone fish, barred surfperch (Amphistichus argenteus), through stomach content and stable isotope analyses. Our results suggested that barred surfperch rely on prey from both phytoplankton and kelp-based subsidies, but their relative contribution to diet varied widely across beaches. Sand crabs (Emerita analoga), which depend on phytoplankton, were abundant at every beach, but their contribution to diet in stomach contents varied from 2 to 87% among sites. At the majority of beaches, δ13C values of fish muscle tissue, which reflects diet integrated over time, were within 0.5 ‰ of sand crab values, suggesting a reliance on phytoplankton-based prey. However, kelp-dependent prey associated either with beach wrack or subtidal reefs was also present in surfperch stomachs from all beaches (up to 41–72%). The notable enrichment in 13C of juvenile surfperch at two beaches and adults at one beach relative to sand crabs suggested a longer-term contribution of kelp-based prey to fish diet. The detection of kelp-based prey in surfperch diets also indicates the potential for reciprocal subsidies in these ecotones. Our results suggest trophic connectivity between surf zones and kelp forests and sandy beaches is spatially variable and that opportunistic higher-level consumers can shift their diet in response to the availability of phytoplankton and kelp-based food resources. This study examines the importance of both macroalgal heterogeneity and specific macroalgal species or morphotypes to nursery provision for juvenile sparids (Diplodus capensis and Sarpa salpa) in a shallow (< 2 m), sheltered rocky cove in warm-temperate Algoa Bay, South Africa. The rocky cove is comprised of a mosaic of two main benthic habitats; canopy-forming Plocamium corallorhiza beds on rocky outcrops and flat reef dominated by low growing red algae morphotypes. We assessed macroalgal communities and the trophic ecology (stomach contents and isotopes), abundance and size structure of D. capensis and S. salpa in the two different benthic habitats and the resources/food associated with the dominant macroalgae species/morphotypes. We found high densities of S. salpa and D. capensis, in both high profile reef (rocky outcrops) and low profile (flat) reef. Within this habitat mosaic resources (epiphytes and macroinvertebrates) were more abundant in the non-canopy forming low growing macroalgae (Laurencia spp. and coralline turf algae) and these algae were also assimilated in the diets of both sparids. The high abundance of both juvenile S. salpa and D. capensis in high profile and low profile reef, suggests that within this mosaic of habitats these species may be using canopy-forming algae in the high profile reef for shelter and non-canopy forming algae in both the high and low profile reef for food. This shows that macroalgal habitats comprising several morphotypes have the potential to support higher juvenile diversity and abundance through both food provision and shelter. Invasive American Bullfrogs (Lithobates catesbeianus) are a threat to native species in riparian ecosystems worldwide. They are indiscriminate predators consuming both vertebrate and invertebrate prey, negatively affecting biodiversity. Documenting the diet and feeding ecology of invasive L. catesbeianus can help management agencies identify affected species and facilitate eradication efforts. We present a dietary analysis of two invasive L. catesbeianus populations over multiple breeding seasons (2016–2020), elucidating ontogenetic changes in diet and dietary differences between sexes and habitats. This is the first study to analyze dietary variation from contemporary populations of invasive L. catesbeianus occupying different watersheds in Southern California, an area where their invasion presents acute conservation challenges. Our analysis of 667 gut contents shows that adult females had more prey in their guts than adult males, even though male and female body size was not significantly different. Adults were more likely than juveniles to consume vertebrate prey, and juveniles were more likely than adults to have empty stomachs. We also found that invasive Red Swamp Crayfish (Procambarus clarkii), made up a substantial portion of the diet of adult L. catesbeianus at the site where they were present. Background: Despite increasing evidence of the potential inaccuracy and unwarranted practice of regular GRV measurement in critically in adults, this practice persists within the United Kingdom. Aim: To explore adult intensive care nurses' decision‐making around the practice of GRV measurement to guide enteral feeding. Study Design: A cross‐sectional 16 item electronic survey in four adult intensive care units (ICUs) in England and Wales. Results: Two hundred and seventy‐three responses were obtained across four ICUs with acceptable response rates for most [Unit 1 74 /127 = 58.2%; Unit 2 87/129 = 67.4%; Unit 3 77/120 = 64.1%; Unit 4 35/168 = 20.8%]. Most (243/273 (89%) reported measuring GRV 4–6 hourly, with most (223/273 82%) reporting that the main reason was to assess feed tolerance or intolerance and 37/273 (13.5%) saying their unit protocol required it. In terms of factors affecting decision‐making, volume obtained was the most important factor, followed by the condition of the patient, with aspirate colour and appearance less important. When asked how they would feel about not measuring GRV routinely, the majority (78.2%) of nurses felt worried (140/273 = 51.2%) or very worried (74/273 = 27%). Conclusions: Factors affecting the nurses' decision‐making around GRV were based largely on fear of risk (around vomiting and pulmonary aspiration) and compliance with unit protocols. One of the greatest challenges in poultry production is maintaining intestinal mucosal barrier integrity and gut microbiota balance. Safe alternative antimicrobials that can regulate the microbial community through animal feed have been the subject of research in poultry production. This study evaluated the effect of Mentha piperita and Melaleuca alternifolia essential oils (EOs) on the gut microbiome and morphometry of broiler quails under normal feeding conditions. The gut microbiome was studied using a completely randomized design consisting of 4 treatments, namely control, bacitracin zinc, and the Eos M. piperita and M. alternifolia, with 8 repetitions and 7 quails per treatment, totaling 224 quails from 1 to 42 days old. The intestinal contents of the slaughtered quails were collected to evaluate the gut microbiome profile of their digestive tract. Gut morphometry was analyzed using a completely randomized factorial design, with four experimental rations for three intestinal sections (4x3) and five replications. The variables studied were villus surface area and height, crypt depth, villus height to cryptdepth ratio (VH:CD), villus-crypt ratio (V:C), villus width to height ratio (VW:H), and height of the intestinal epithelium and musculature. M. alternifolia (50 mg/kg of feed) in the diet of broiler quails improved gut morphometry, similar to the results obtained with bacitracin zinc. Recurrent non-stenotic cholangitis (NSC) is a difficult-to-treat complication after hepaticojejunostomy (HJ) leading to multiple hospital admissions. The optimal treatment strategy is unclear as a systematic review is lacking. A systematic review was performed including studies detailing treatment strategies and outcomes for recurrent NSC in patients with a surgical HJ in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library (inception – September 2023). Primary outcome was resolution of NSC as defined by the included studies. Overall, 72 patients with recurrent NSC after HJ were included from seven retrospective studies. The rate of recurrent NSC (specified in five studies) was 4% (46/1143 HJs). Diagnosis of NSC was mostly made after excluding HJ stenosis and assessing bile reflux. Initial treatment consisted of short-course antibiotics for all patients. Second step treatment consisted of prolonged antibiotic therapy (n = 10, 13.8%). Third step treatment consisted of surgery (n = 9, n = 12.5%); mostly lengthening of the biliary loop. Together, the overall reported resolution-rate of recurrent NSC was 66.6% (n = 48). A 'step-up approach' may be effective in two-thirds of patients with recurrent NSC after HJ, starting with short-course antibiotics, and eventually adding prolonged antibiotic therapy and, ultimately, surgery aimed at preventing intestinal content and food reflux. Clostridium spiroforme has been associated with spontaneous and antibiotic-associated enteric disease (C. spiroforme– associated enteric disease, CSAED) in rabbits, which is clinically characterized by anorexia, diarrhea, or sudden death. Diagnosis is usually based on gross and microscopic lesions, coupled with finding the characteristic coiled bacteria in intestinal smears. Isolation of C. spiroforme is often challenging, and a PCR protocol has been developed. We reviewed 32 cases of CSAED submitted for autopsy to the Davis, Tulare, and Turlock laboratories of CAHFS between 1992 and 2019. The reported gross findings were soiling of the perineum, tail, and/or hind legs with diarrhea (16 of 32); gastric (16 of 32), small intestinal (6 of 32), cecal (15 of 32), and/or colonic (4 of 32) distention with brown-to-green, watery content; and serosal hemorrhages in the cecum (15 of 32). The most common microscopic finding was necrotizing enteritis (19 of 32), followed by cecal mucosal or submucosal edema (8 of 32), necrotizing or pleocellular typhlitis (6 of 32), necrotizing or heterophilic typhlocolitis (6 of 32), and cecal transmural hemorrhages (5 of 32). In all 32 rabbits, typical helically coiled, gram-positive bacilli were observed in fecal or intestinal smears. Sander lucioperca represents a potential candidate for aquaculture in Moroccan freshwater, but information concerning its diet and feeding habits is still lacking. This study therefore aims to contribute to the knowledge of the feeding ecology of this invasive species in Al Massira Reservoir, with particular emphasis on seasonal and intraspecific diet variation. Analysis of stomach contents revealed that the pike perch diet consists of various prey items, with an abundance of Lepomis gibbosus. However, S. lucioperca is also an opportunistic predator, capable of consuming other food resources when they become available in its habitat. This opportunistic behavior may account for the successful establishment of this species' population in a large reservoir, despite the coexistence of other carnivorous fish species. The dietary composition indicated a carnivorous diet with considerable seasonal variation. There was no significant sex-related or ontogenetic variation in the diet. The feeding intensity is similar between males and females, as well as across different size classes, but it varies according to the seasons. Tree swallow nest boxes were deployed at sites proximal to two putative aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) sources in the Duluth, MN area, as well as along the St. Louis River and a reference lake for comparative purposes in 2019, 2020 and 2021. The two AFFF sites were the current Duluth Air National Guard Base (ANG) and the Lake Superior College Emergency Response Training Center. Between 13 and 40 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), depending on year, were detected and quantified in tree swallow egg, nestling carcasses, and stomach contents. Assessments were made of oxidative stress and ethoxyresorufin-O-dealkylase activity in liver tissue, thyroid hormone levels in plasma and thyroid glands, DNA damage in red blood cells, and two measures of immune response (haptoglobin-like activity and immunoglobulin) in plasma of the nestlings. Additionally, other contaminants, such as polychlorinated biphenyls, legacy organochlorine pesticides, and trace elements, were assessed at sites with no previous data. Total egg PFAS concentrations at the ANG site and north of that site were 30–40 times higher than at the reference lake, while nestling PFAS concentrations were 10–15 times higher. In contrast, the St. Louis River sites had slightly, but non-statistically significant, elevated egg and nestling PFAS concentrations relative to the reference lake (2–5 times higher). One PFAS, perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), was higher, as a proportion of total PFAS, at sites with a known AFFF source compared to the reference lake, as well as compared to sites along the St. Louis River with mainly urban and industrial sources of PFAS. The ratio of total carboxylates to total sulfonates also distinguished between PFAS sources. Background: The partial diversion of intestinal contents facilitates achieving and maintaining weight loss and improving glycemic control in patients with obesity and with or without T2DM. The purpose of this study is to report our experience and 1-year follow-up with novel modification of SADI-S. Methods: This study is a part of a multicentric trial of patients that underwent primary side-to-side duodeno-ileostomy and sleeve gastrectomy (SG) with GT metabolic solutions magnetic anastomosis system. Feasibility, safety, and initial efficacy were evaluated. Results: The mean age of the patients included was 48 ± 8.75 years and the preoperative BMI was 43.32 ± 2.82 kg/m2. The complications were present in 30% of patients. The anastomosis patency was confirmed by the passage of radiological contrast under fluoroscopy at a mean of 17 days (17–29 days), and the mean expulsion time was 42 days (32–62). The mean diameter of the anastomosis after the magnet expulsion was 13.8 × 11.4 mm. The percentage of total weight lost at 1 year was 38.68 ± 8.48% (p < 0.001). The percentage of excess weight loss 82.5 ± 18.44% (p < 0.001) and improvements in glucose profiles were observed. Mean baseline HbA1c 5.77 ± 0.31% was reduced to 5.31 ± 0.26% (p < 0.024). Conclusions: Latero-lateral duodeno-ileostomy + SG with magnetic duodenal bipartition is afeasible and reasonably safe technique and induces weight loss in patients with obesity and improvement of glycemic control. This modification could be considered as an option to standard SADI-S or as a first step in two stages procedure. However, larger studies are needed. Both postmortem toxicological and medical-forensic examinations are very important in the case of analyzing various types of chemical substances. Hydroxyzine (HZ) is a first-generation antihistamine drug with a sedative effect that disrupts cognitive function and affects the ability to drive motor vehicles. Enzymatic oxidation of the hydroxy-methyl group to the carboxyl group leads to the formation of its main metabolite—cetirizine (CZ). CZ is the active substance of antiallergic drugs. Because it does not cross the BBB (blood–brain barrier) easily, it is less likely to cause drowsiness or affect memory and impair cognitive function. Therefore, in criminal studies, it is often important what medication had been taken by a person involved, e.g., in a car accident, HZ or CZ. The analysis of both antihistamine drugs is challenging, as usually very low concentrations of the compound of interest need to be determined. Thus, an ultra-sensitive UHPLC–QqQ-MS/MS method was developed for simultaneous determination of HZ and CZ in biological fluid samples. The lower limit of quantification (LOQ) for HZ and CZ was calculated as 0.345 and 0.3696 ng/mL, respectively. Together with a reduced sample volume to 200 μL, it makes the developed method suitable for a sensitive multidrug forensic toxicological analysis. Samples were extracted with simple and fast liquid–liquid extraction (ethyl acetate, pH 9). The present method for the determination of HZ and CZ in human blood proved to be simple, fast, selective, and sensitive. The quantification by LC–MS/MS was successfully applied to the samples coming from 28 authentic biological fluids (blood, urine, vitreous humor, bile and stomach content), both antemortem and postmortem. The performed studies confirm that the developed method is characterized by a high extraction efficiency. Intestinal dilatation syndrome (IDS) is a segmental enteropathy characterized by dilatation of the junction of the ileum and jejunum (Meckel's diverticulum). IDS severely affects the poultry industry by causing a chronic and irreversible drop in egg laying, reducing feed conversion efficiency, and increasing the mortality rate. The clinical and pathological features of IDS in white laying hens were described, and viral molecular and metagenomic research was conducted. The 50 – to 60-day-old chickens presented pale mucosa, apathy, depression, ruffled feathers, and diarrhoea, accompanied by a 20% loss in fertile egg production, 20% culling of birds, and 5% mortality. The main findings at necropsy were marked intestinal dilatation with intestinal stasis, a narrow distal jejunum in the region of Meckel's diverticulum, and undigested food. Microscopic analysis revealed marked atrophic lymphoplasmacytic and heterophilic enteritis with hyperplastic crypts, ulceration, and heterophilic and lymphoplasmacytic perineuritis. The molecular assays consistently detected the presence of chicken parvovirus in the three segments of the intestine, pancreas, and proventriculus, as well as chicken megrivirus in the intestinal contents. Marked atrophic enteritis with perineuritis and intestinal stasis were associated with clinical manifestations of poor intestinal absorption and secondary bacterial infection. Our data provide useful information about IDS and highlight the importance of further studies to determine the specific role of each detected virus in this syndrome. Astroviruses are an emerging hazard in hatchery management, and they are responsible for great economic losses in poultry farms worldwide. Chicken astrovirus (CAstV) and avian nephritis virus (ANV) are involved in decreased hatching rate, mainly due to embryo deaths, and pale and runted chicks too weak to hatch. Hatchery diseases occur through direct egg infection or vertical transmission. However, the specific role of astroviruses in these diseases is still largely unknown. To elucidate this a high-quality Piedmont hatchery (Italy) was selected based on farm clinical signs and the astrovirus serological positivity in the breeder farm. The viral dynamics were followed from the hatchery to the farm. The presence of both CAstV and ANV was monitored by evaluating the viral load in environmental and bird samples. Interestingly, both viruses were detected in chick yolk sacs at 18 days of incubation, and in the gut contents of 1-day chicks, whereas in the hatchery environmental samples, the eggs' external surfaces and the embryos' intestinal contents were negative. The CAstV copy number was higher in bird tissues from the hatchery, while a greater ANV load was detected in bird tissues from the farm. Moreover, our data suggest vertical transmission of both viruses. Frequent co-infection was also observed in samples from both the hatchery and the farm. In recent years, chitosan oligosaccharide (COS) has demonstrated potential applications in enhancing the protective immune function of sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus (Selenka, 1867), owing to its superior biological properties. The fluorescent probe labeling technique is simple to operate and highly sensitive, enabling the visualization of polysaccharides. This study utilized the fluorescent probe fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) to label COS. A fluorescence imaging system was used to track the distribution of the FITC-tagged COS absorbed by A. japonicus. FITC-COS was prepared and administered to A. japonicus along with a basal diet supplemented with 0.5% FITC-COS. Subsequently, samples were collected at different time points to analyze the differential absorption and distribution of COS in the coelomocytes and the tissues of A. japonicus, including intestinal contents, intestine, respiratory tree, longitudinal muscle, and body wall tissues. Quantitative fluorescence detection with a microplate reader and fluorescence microscopy were used for analysis. The results revealed that COS is widely distributed in the various tissues of A. japonicus. Fluorescence peaks were observed at 9.5 h in the coelomocytes, respiratory tree, longitudinal muscle, and body wall tissues. Additionally, at 12 h, fluorescence peaks were observed in the intestinal contents and intestine tissue.
