Search

The region of $N\approx Z\approx 40$ has long been associated with strongly deformed nuclear configurations. The presence of this strong deformation was recently confirmed through lifetime measurements in $N\approx Z$ Sr and Zr nuclei. Theoretically, however, these nuclei present a challenge due to the vast valence space required to incorporate all deformation driving interactions. Recent state-of-the-art predictions indicate a near axial prolate deformation for $N=Z$ and $N=Z+2$ nuclei between $N=Z=36$ and $N=Z=40$. In this work we investigate the shores of this island of deformation through a sub-barrier Coulomb excitation study of the $N=Z+4$ nucleus, \textsuperscript{80}Sr. Extracting a spectroscopic quadrupole moment of $Q_s(2^+_1) = 0.45^{+0.83}_{-0.88}$~eb, we find that \textsuperscript{80}Sr is inconsistent with significant axial prolate deformation. This indicates that the predicted region of strong prolate deformation around $N=Z=40$ is tightly constrained to the quartet of nuclei: \textsuperscript{76,78}Sr and \textsuperscript{78,80}Zr., Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters B

The cross-shell excited states of $^{34}$Si have been investigated via $\beta$-decays of the $4^-$ ground state and the $1^+$ isomeric state of $^{34}$Al. Since the valence protons and valence neutrons occupy different major shells in the ground state as well as the intruder $1^+$ isomeric state of $^{34}$Al, intruder levels of $^{34}$Si are populated via allowed $\beta$ decays. Spin assignments to such intruder levels of $^{34}$Si were established through $\gamma$-$\gamma$ angular correlation analysis for the negative parity states with dominant configurations $(\nu d_{3/2})^{-1} \otimes (\nu f_{7/2})^{1}$ as well as the positive parity states with dominant configurations $(\nu sd)^{-2} \otimes (\nu f_{7/2}p_{3/2})^2$. The configurations of such intruder states play crucial roles in our understanding of the $N=20$ shell gap evolution. A configuration interaction model derived from the FSU Hamiltonian was utilized in order to interpret the intruder states in $^{34}$Si. Shell model interaction derived from a more fundamental theory with the Valence Space In Medium Similarity Renormalization Group (VS-IMSRG) method was also employed to interpret the structure of $^{34}$Si.

The properties of a nanosecond isomer in $^{32}$Si, disputed in previous studies, depend on the evolution of proton and neutron shell gaps near the `island of inversion'. We have placed the isomer at 5505.2(2) keV with $J^{\pi} = 5^-$, decaying primarily via an $E3$ transition to the $2^+_1$ state. The $E3$ strength of 0.0841(10) W.u. is unusually small and suggests that this isomer is dominated by the $(\nu d_{3/2})^{-1} \otimes (\nu f_{7/2})^{1}$ configuration, which is sensitive to the $N=20$ shell gap. A newly observed $4^+_1$ state is placed at 5881.4(13) keV; its energy is enhanced by the $Z=14$ subshell closure. This indicates that the isomer is located in a `yrast trap', a feature rarely seen at low mass numbers., Comment: Accepted, Physical Review C

\noindent \textbf{Background:} Detailed spectroscopy of neutron-rich, heavy, deformed nuclei is of broad interest for nuclear astrophysics and nuclear structure. Nuclei in the r-process path and following freeze-out region impact the resulting r-process abundance distribution, and the structure of nuclei midshell in both proton and neutron number helps to understand the evolution of subshell gaps and large deformation in these nuclei. \noindent \textbf{Purpose:} To improve the understanding of the nuclear structure of $^{160}$Gd, specifically the $K^\pi$=$4^+$ bands, as well as study the $\beta$-decay of $^{160}$Eu into $^{160}$Gd. \noindent \textbf{Methods:} High-statistics decay spectroscopy of $^{160}$Gd resulting from the $\beta$-decay of $^{160}$Eu was collected using the GRIFFIN spectrometer at the TRIUMF-ISAC facility. \noindent \textbf{Results:} Two new excited states and ten new transitions were observed in $^{160}$Gd. The $\beta$-decaying half-lives of the low- and high-spin isomer in $^{160}$Eu were determined, and the low-spin state's half-life was measured to be $t_{1/2}=26.0(8)$~s, $\sim$16\% shorter than previous measurements. Lifetimes of the two $K^\pi$=$4^+$ band-heads in $^{160}$Gd were measured for the first time, as well as $\gamma$-$\gamma$ angular correlations and mixing ratios of intense transitions out of those band-heads. \noindent \textbf{Conclusions:} Lifetimes and mixing ratios suggest that the hexadecapole phonon model of the $K^\pi$=$4^+$ band-heads in $^{160}$Gd is preferred over a simple two-state strong mixing scenario, although further theoretical calculations are needed to fully understand these states. Additionally, the 1999.0 keV state in $^{160}$Gd heavily populated in $\beta$-decay is shown to have positive parity, which raises questions regarding the structure of the high-spin $\beta$-decaying state in $^{160}$Eu.

We have measured the cross section of the $^{83}$Rb(p,$\gamma)^{84}$Sr radiative capture reaction in inverse kinematics using a radioactive beam of $^{83}$Rb at incident energies of 2.4 and $2.7 A$ MeV. Prior to the radioactive beam measurement, the $^{84}$Kr(p,$\gamma)^{85}$Rb radiative capture reaction was measured in inverse kinematics using a stable beam of $^{84}$Kr at an incident energy of $2.7 A$ MeV. The effective relative kinetic energies of these measurements lie within the relevant energy window for the $\gamma$ process in supernovae. The central values of the measured partial cross sections of both reactions were found to be $0.17-0.42$ times the predictions of statistical model calculations. Assuming the predicted cross section at other energies is reduced by the same factor leads to a slightly higher calculated abundance of the $p$ nucleus $^{84}$Sr, caused by the reduced rate of the $^{84}$Sr($\gamma$,p)$^{83}$Rb reaction derived from the present measurement., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2109.06775

The excited states of $N=44$ $^{74}$Zn were investigated via $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy following $^{74}$Cu $\beta$ decay. By exploiting $\gamma$-$\gamma$ angular correlation analysis, the $2_2^+$, $3_1^+$, $0_2^+$ and $2_3^+$ states in $^{74}$Zn were firmly established. The $\gamma$-ray branching and $E2/M1$ mixing ratios for transitions de-exciting the $2_2^+$, $3_1^+$ and $2_3^+$ states were measured, allowing for the extraction of relative $B(E2)$ values. In particular, the $2_3^+ \to 0_2^+$ and $2_3^+ \to 4_1^+$ transitions were observed for the first time. The results show excellent agreement with new microscopic large-scale shell-model calculations, and are discussed in terms of underlying shapes, as well as the role of neutron excitations across the $N=40$ gap. Enhanced axial shape asymmetry (triaxiality) is suggested to characterize $^{74}$Zn in its ground state. Furthermore, an excited $K=0$ band with a significantly larger softness in its shape is identified. A shore of the $N=40$ ``island of inversion'' appears to manifest above $Z=26$, previously thought as its northern limit in the chart of the nuclides.

We present new experimental measurements of resonance strengths in the astrophysical 23Al(p, {\gamma})24Si reaction, constraining the pathway of nucleosynthesis beyond 22Mg in X-ray burster scenarios. Specifically, we have performed the first measurement of the (d, p) reaction using a radioactive beam of 23Ne to explore levels in 24Ne, the mirror analog of 24Si. Four strong single-particle states were observed and corresponding neutron spectroscopic factors were extracted with a precision of {\sim}20{\%}. Using these spectroscopic factors, together with mirror state identifications, we have reduced uncertainties in the strength of the key {\ell} = 0 resonance at Er= 157 keV, in the astrophysical 23Al(p, {\gamma}) reaction, by a factor of 4. Our results show that the 22Mg(p, {\gamma})23Al(p, {\gamma}) pathway dominates over the competing 22Mg({\alpha}, p) reaction in all but the most energetic X-ray burster events (T>0.85GK), significantly affecting energy production and the preservation of hydrogen fuel., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The selenium isotopes lie at the heart of a tumultuous region of the nuclear chart where shape coexistence effects grapple with neutron-proton pairing correlations, triaxiality, and the impending proton dripline. In this work a study of $^{72}$Se by internal conversion electron and $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy was undertaken with the SPICE and TIGRESS arrays. New measurements of the branching ratio and lifetime of the $0_2^+$ state were performed yielding a determination of $\rho^2(E0;0_2^+{\rightarrow}0_1^+)=29(3)$ milliunits. two state mixing calculations were performed that highlighted the importance of interpretation of such $E0$ strength values in the context of shape-coexistence.

The half-life of the superallowed Fermi $\beta^+$ emitter $^{14}$O was determined to high precision via a direct $\beta$ counting experiment performed at the Isotope Separator and Accelerator (ISAC) facility at TRIUMF. The result, $T_{1/2}$($^{14}$O) = 70619.2(76) ms, is consistent with, but is more precise than, the world average obtained from 11 previous measurements. Combining the $^{14}$O half-life deduced in the present work with the previous most precise measurements of this quantity leads to a reduction in the overall uncertainty, by nearly a factor of 2. Motivated primarily by the large uncertainties in the thermonuclear rate of the $^{30}$P$(p,\gamma)^{31}$S reaction that limit our understanding of classical novae, we carried out lifetime measurements of $^{31}$S excited states using the Doppler Shift Lifetimes (DSL) facility at the TRIUMF Isotope Separator and Accelerator (ISAC-II) facility. The $^{31}$S excited states were populated by the $^{3}$He$(^{32}$S$,\alpha)^{31}$S reaction. The deexcitation $\gamma$ rays were detected by a clover-type high-purity germanium detector in coincidence with the $\alpha$ particles detected by a silicon detector telescope. We have applied modern Markov chain Monte Carlo-based Bayesian methods to perform lineshape analyses of Doppler-shift attenuation method $\gamma$-ray data for the first time. We have determined the lifetimes of the two lowest-lying $^{31}$S excited states. First experimental upper limits on the lifetimes of four higher-lying states have been obtained. The experimental results were compared to shell-model calculations using five universal $sd$-shell Hamiltonians. Evidence for $\gamma$ rays originating from the astrophysically important $J^\pi=3/2^+$, 260-keV $^{30}$P$(p,\gamma)^{31}$S resonance has also been observed, although strong constraints on the lifetime will require better statistics.

We have performed the first direct measurement of the 83Rb(p,g) radiative capture reaction cross section in inverse kinematics using a radioactive beam of 83Rb at incident energies of 2.4 and 2.7 A MeV. The measured cross section at an effective relative kinetic energy of Ecm = 2.393 MeV, which lies within the relevant energy window for core collapse supernovae, is smaller than the prediction of statistical model calculations. This leads to the abundance of 84Sr produced in the astrophysical p process being higher than previously calculated. Moreover, the discrepancy of the present data with theoretical predictions indicates that further experimental investigation of p-process reactions involving unstable projectiles is clearly warranted., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, published in Physical Review Letters

The occurrence of octupole shapes in even-mass neutron-rich Ba isotopes has been well established. However, the situation with the odd-mass Ba and odd or odd-odd La nuclei around them is far from settled. In order to shed light on these less-studied isotopes, a fast-timing experiment was performed using GRIFFIN at TRIUMF-ISAC. A wealth of excited-state lifetimes in the 100~ps to few ns range have been measured in $^{144, 145, 146}$Ba and $^{145,146}$La populated in the $\beta^-$ and $\beta^--n$ decay of $^{145,146}$Cs. The results do not allow to draw firm conclusions on the possible octupole deformation of these nuclei but suggest different spin and parity assignments than previous works. This work highlights the need for more detailed study of the odd and odd-odd isotopes in this region to properly understand their structure., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

The $\beta$-decay of neutron-rich $^{129}$In into $^{129}$Sn was studied using the GRIFFIN spectrometer at the ISAC facility at TRIUMF. The study observed the half-lives of the ground state and each of the $\beta$-decaying isomers. The level scheme of $^{129}$Sn has been expanded with thirty-one new $\gamma$-ray transitions and nine new excited levels, leading to a re-evaluation of the $\beta$-branching ratios and level spin assignments. The observation of the $\beta$-decay of the (29/2$^{+}$) 1911-keV isomeric state in $^{129}$In is reported for the first time, with a branching ratio of 2.0(5)$\%$.

A high-precision branching ratio measurement for the superallowed Fermi $\beta^{+}$ emitter $^{62}$Ga was performed with the Gamma-Ray Infrastructure for Fundamental Investigations of Nuclei (GRIFFIN) spectrometer at the Isotope Separator and Accelerator (ISAC) radioactive ion beam facility at TRIUMF. The high efficiency of the GRIFFIN spectrometer allowed 63 $\gamma$-ray transitions, with intensities down to $\approx$1 part per million (ppm) per $^{62}$Ga $\beta^{+}$ decay, to be placed in the level scheme of the daughter nucleus $^{62}$Zn, establishing the superallowed $\beta$ branching ratio for $^{62}$Ga decay to be 99.8577$^{+0.0023}_{-0.0029}\%$, a factor of 4 more precise than the previous world average. For several cascades, $\gamma-\gamma$ angular correlation measurements were performed to assign spins and/or determine the mixing ratios of transitions. In particular, the spin of the 2.342 MeV excited state in the daughter nucleus $^{62}$Zn was definitively assigned as $J = 0$. This assignment resolves a discrepancy between previous measurements and has important implications for the isospin symmetry breaking correction, $\delta_{C1}$, in $^{62}$Ga superallowed Fermi $\beta$ decay., Comment: A text label in Figure 12 has been corrected compared to the original submission

The $\beta^-$ decay of $^{47}$K to $^{47}$Ca is an appropriate mechanism for benchmarking interactions spanning the $sd$ and $pf$ shells, but current knowledge of the $\beta^-$-decay scheme is limited. We have performed a high-resolution, high-efficiency study of the $\beta^-$-decay of $^{47}$K with the GRIFFIN spectrometer at TRIUMF-ISAC. The study revealed 48 new transitions, a more precise value for the $^{47}$K half-life (17.38(3)~s), and new spin and parity assignments for eight excited states. Levels placed for the first time here raise the highest state observed in $\beta^-$ decay to within 568(3) keV of the $Q$-value and confirm the previously measured large $\beta^-$-decay branching ratios to the low-lying states. Previously unobserved $\beta^-$-feeding to 3/2$^+$ states between 4.5 and 6.1~MeV excitation energy was identified with a total $\beta^-$-feeding intensity of 1.29(2)\%. The sum of the $B(GT)$ values for these states indicates that the $1s_{1/2}$ proton hole strength near this excitation energy is comparable to the previously known $1s_{1/2}$ proton and neutron hole strengths near 2.6 MeV.

The $^{80}$Ge structure was investigated in a high-statistics $\beta$-decay experiment of $^{80}$Ga using the GRIFFIN spectrometer at TRIUMF-ISAC through $\gamma$, $\beta$-$e$, $e$-$\gamma$ and $\gamma$-$\gamma$ spectroscopy. No evidence was found for the recently reported 0$_2^{+}$ 639-keV level suggested as evidence for low-energy shape coexistence in $^{80}$Ge. Large-scale shell model calculations performed in $^{78,80,82}$Ge place the $0^{+}_{2}$ level in $^{80}$Ge at 2\,MeV. The new experimental evidence combined with shell model predictions indicate that low-energy shape coexistence is not present in $^{80}$Ge.

Background: Neutron-rich nuclei around neutron number N = 60 show a dramatic shape transition from spherical ground states to prolate deformation in 98Sr and heavier nuclei. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the single-particle structure approaching the shape transitional region. Method: The level structures of neutron-rich 93,94,95Sr were studied via the d(94,95,96Sr,t) one-neutron stripping reactions at TRIUMF using a beam energy of 5.5 AMeV. {\gamma}-rays emitted from excited states and recoiling charged particles were detected by using the TIGRESS and SHARC arrays, respectively. States were identified by gating on the excitation energy and, if possible, the coincident {\gamma} radiation. Results: Triton angular distributions for the reactions populating states in ejectile nuclei 93,94,95Sr were compared with distorted wave Born approximation calculations to assign and revise spin and parity quantum numbers and extract spectroscopic factors. The results were compared with shell model calculations and the reverse (d,p) reactions and good agreement was obtained. Conclusions: The results for the d(94Sr,t)93Sr and d(95Sr,t)94Sr reactions are in good agreement with shell model calculations. A two level mixing analysis for the 0+ states in 94Sr suggest strong mixing of two shapes. For the d(96Sr,t)95Sr reaction the agreement with the shell model is less good. The configuration of the ground state of 96Sr is already more complex than predicted, and therefore indications for the shape transition can already be observed before N = 60., Comment: accepted for publication in PRC

Excited states of $^{129}$In populated following the $\beta$-decay of $^{129}$Cd were experimentally studied with the GRIFFIN spectrometer at the ISAC facility of TRIUMF, Canada. A 480-MeV proton beam was impinged on a uranium carbide target and $^{129}$Cd was extracted using the Ion Guide Laser Ion Source (IG-LIS). $\beta$- and $\gamma$-rays following the decay of $^{129}$Cd were detected with the GRIFFIN spectrometer comprising the plastic scintillator SCEPTAR and 16 high-purity germanium (HPGe) clover-type detectors. %, along with the $\beta$-particles were detected with SCEPTAR. From the $\beta$-$\gamma$-$\gamma$ coincidence analysis, 32 new transitions and 7 new excited states were established, expanding the previously known level scheme of $^{129}$In. The $\log ft$ values deduced from the $\beta$-feeding intensities suggest that some of the high-lying states were populated by the $\nu 0 g_{7/2} \rightarrow \pi 0 g_{9/2}$ allowed Gamow-Teller (GT) transition, which indicates that the allowed GT transition is more dominant in the $^{129}$Cd decay than previously reported. Observation of fragmented Gamow-Teller strengths is consistent with theoretical calculations., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, to be published in Physical Review C

Spectroscopy of doubly magic $^{132}_{50}$Sn$_{82}$ has been performed with the GRIFFIN spectrometer at TRIUMF-ISAC following the $\beta$ decay of $^{132}_{49}$In$_{83}$. The analysis has allowed for the placement of a total of 70 transitions and 29 excited states in $^{132}$Sn. Detailed spectroscopy has also been performed on $^{131}$Sb, resulting from the $\beta$ decay of $^{131}$Sn, produced from the $\beta$-delayed neutron decay of $^{132}$In. Measurement of $\gamma$-rays in both $^{131}$Sn and $^{131}$Sb has led to the determination of the $\beta$-delayed neutron emission probability, $P_{n}$, from $^{132}$In. This is the first time the $P_{n}$ has been measured for this nucleus using $\gamma$ spectroscopy, and the new value of 12.3(4)% is consistent with the most recent $\beta-n$ counting experiment. Additionally, $\gamma$-$\gamma$ angular correlations have been performed in $^{132}$Sn, supporting the spin assignments of several excited states. The low-lying structure of semi-magic $^{118}$Sn has been investigated through the $\beta$-decay of $^{118}$In ($T_{1/2}=4.45$ min) to study shape coexistence via the reduced transition probabilities of states in the 2p-2h proton intruder band. This high-statistics study was carried out at TRIUMF-ISAC with the GRIFFIN spectrometer. In total, 99 transitions have been placed in the level scheme with 43 being newly observed. Three low-lying $\gamma$-ray transitions with energies near 285 keV have been resolved from which the 2$^+_{\mathrm{intr.}} \rightarrow 0^+_{\mathrm{intr.}}$ 284.52-keV transition was determined to have half of the previous branching fraction leading to a $B(E2;2^+_2\rightarrow 0^+_2)$ of 21(4) W.u. compared to 39(7) W.u. from the previous measurement. Calculations using $sd$ IBM-2 with mixing have also been made to compare the experimental $B(E2)$ values to the theoretical values and to make comparisons to the $^{114,116}$Sn isotopes previously studied using the same theoretical model.

Stellar carbon synthesis occurs exclusively via the $3\alpha$ process, in which three $\alpha$ particles fuse to form $^{12}$C in the excited Hoyle state, followed by electromagnetic decay to the ground state. The Hoyle state is above the $\alpha$ threshold, and the rate of stellar carbon production depends on the radiative width of this state. The radiative width cannot be measured directly, and must instead be deduced by combining three separately measured quantities. One of these quantities is the $E0$ decay branching ratio of the Hoyle state, and the current $10$\% uncertainty on the radiative width stems mainly from the uncertainty on this ratio. The $E0$ branching ratio was deduced from a series of pair conversion measurements of the $E0$ and $E2$ transitions depopulating the $0^+_2$ Hoyle state and $2^+_1$ state in $^{12}$C, respectively. The excited states were populated by the $^{12}$C$(p,p^\prime)$ reaction at 10.5 MeV beam energy, and the pairs were detected with the electron-positron pair spectrometer, Super-e, at the Australian National University. The deduced branching ratio required knowledge of the proton population of the two states, as well as the alignment of the $2^+_1$ state in the reaction. For this purpose, proton scattering and $\gamma$-ray angular distribution experiments were also performed. An $E0$ branching ratio of $\Gamma^{E0}_{\pi}/\Gamma=8.2(5)\times10^{-6}$ was deduced in the current work, and an adopted value of $\Gamma^{E0}_{\pi}/\Gamma=7.6(4)\times10^{-6}$ is recommended based on a weighted average of previous literature values and the new result. The new recommended value for the $E0$ branching ratio is about 14% larger than the previous adopted value of $\Gamma^{E0}_{\pi}/\Gamma=6.7(6)\times10^{-6}$, while the uncertainty has been reduced from 9% to 5%., Comment: Accepted for publication as a Regular Article in Phys. Background: Electric-quadrupole ($E2$) strengths relate to the underlying quadrupole deformation of a nucleus and present a challenge for many nuclear theories. Mirror nuclei in the vicinity of the line of $N=Z$ represent a convenient laboratory for testing deficiencies in such models, making use of the isospin-symmetry of the systems. Purpose: Uncertainties associated with literature $E2$ strengths in \textsuperscript{23}Mg are some of the largest in $T_z=\left|\frac{1}{2}\right|$ nuclei in the $sd$-shell. The purpose of the present work is to improve the precision with which these values are known, to enable better comparison with theoretical models. Methods: Coulomb-excitation measurements of $^{23}$Mg and $^{23}$Na were performed at the TRIUMF-ISAC facility using the TIGRESS spectrometer. They were used to determine the $E2$ matrix elements of mixed $E2$/$M1$ transitions. Results: Reduced $E2$ transition strengths, $B(E2)$, were extracted for \textsuperscript{23}Mg and \textsuperscript{23}Na. Their precision was improved by factors of approximately six for both isotopes, while agreeing within uncertainties with previous measurements. Conclusions: A comparison was made with both shell-model and {\it ab initio} valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group calculations. Valence-space in-medium similarity-renormalization-group calculations were found to underpredict the absolute $E2$ strength - in agreement with previous studies.

Excited states in $^{58,60,62}$Ni were populated via inelastic proton scattering at the Australian National University as well as via inelastic neutron scattering at the University of Kentucky Accelerator Laboratory. The Super-e electron spectrometer and the CAESAR Compton-suppressed HPGe array were used in complementary experiments to measure conversion coefficients and $\delta(E2/M1)$ mixing ratios, respectively, for a number of $2^+ \rightarrow 2^+$ transitions. The data obtained were combined with lifetimes and branching ratios to determine $E0$, $M1$, and $E2$ transition strengths between $2^+$ states. The $E0$ transition strengths between $0^+$ states were measured using internal conversion electron spectroscopy and compare well to previous results from internal pair formation spectroscopy. The $E0$ transition strengths between the lowest-lying $2^+$ states were found to be consistently large for the isotopes studied.

We report on high-statistics data from the $\beta^-$ decay of the $^{46}$K $J^{\pi}$ = 2$^-$ ground state taken with the GRIFFIN spectrometer located at the TRIUMF-ISAC facility. In total, 199 $\gamma$ rays and 42 excited states were placed in the level scheme, and from the observed $\beta$ feeding and angular correlations of pairs of cascading $\gamma$ rays, it was possible to assign spins and parities to excited states and determine mixing ratios for selected $\gamma$ rays. The level structure of $^{46}$Ca is compared to theoretical predictions from a microscopic valence-space Hamiltonian derived from two- (NN) and three-nucleon (3N) forces. These calculations are in reasonable agreement with the experimental data and indicate that the protons in this region are not as inert as would be expected for semi-magic nuclei.

The region around neutron number N = 60 in the neutron-rich Sr and Zr nuclei is one of the most dramatic examples of a ground state shape transition from (near) spherical below N = 60 to strongly deformed shapes in the heavier isotopes. The single-particle structure of 95-97Sr approaching the ground state shape transition at 98 Sr has been investigated via single-neutron transfer reactions using the (d, p) reaction in inverse kinematics. These reactions selectively populate states with a large overlap of the projectile ground state coupled to a neutron in a single-particle orbital. Radioactive 94,95,96Sr nuclei with energies of 5.5 AMeV were used to bombard a CD 2 target. Recoiling light charged particles and {\gamma} rays were detected using a quasi-4{\pi} silicon strip detector array and a 12 element Ge array. The excitation energy of states populated was reconstructed employing the missing mass method combined with {\gamma}-ray tagging and differential cross sections for final states were extracted. A reaction model analysis of the angular distributions allowed for firm spin assignments to be made for the low-lying 352, 556 and 681 keV excited states in 95Sr and a constraint has been placed on the spin of the higher-lying 1666 keV state. Angular distributions have been extracted for 10 states populated in the d(95Sr,p)96Sr reaction, and constraints have been provided for the spins and parities of several final states. Results are compared to shell model calculations in several model spaces and the structure of low-lying states in 94Sr and 95Sr is well-described. Lifetimes of $2^+_1$ and $4^+_1$ states, as well as some negative-parity and non-yrast states, in $^{188-200}$Hg were measured using $\gamma-\gamma$ electronic fast timing techniques with the LaBr$_3$(Ce) detector array of the GRIFFIN spectrometer. The excited states were populated in the $\epsilon/\beta^+$-decay of $J^\pi =7^+/2^-$ $^{188-200}$Tl produced at the TRIUMF-ISAC facility. The deduced B(E2) values are compared to different interacting boson model predictions. The precision achieved in this work over previous ones allows for a meaningful comparison with the different theoretical models of these transitional Hg isotopes, which confirms the onset of state mixing in $^{190}$Hg.

The elusive $\beta^-\text{p}^+$ decay was observed in $^{11}$Be by directly measuring the emitted protons and their energy distribution for the first time with the prototype Active Target Time Projection Chamber (pAT-TPC) in an experiment performed at ISAC-TRIUMF. The measured $\beta^-\text{p}^+$ branching ratio is orders of magnitude larger than any previous theoretical model predicted. This can be explained by the presence of a narrow resonance in $^{11}$B above the proton separation energy.

The $\beta$ decay of the isomeric and ground state of $^{50}$Sc to the semi-magic nucleus $^{50}_{22}$Ti$_{28}$ has been studied using a $^{50}$Ca beam delivered to the GRIFFIN $\gamma$-ray spectrometer at the TRIUMF-ISAC facility. $\beta$-decay branching ratios are reported to 16 excited states with a total of 38 $\gamma$-ray transitions linking them. These new data significantly expands the information available over previous studies. Relative intensities are measured to less than 0.001$\%$ that of the strongest transition with the majority of $\gamma$-ray transitions observed here in $\beta$ decay for the first time. The "Island of Inversion" for neutron-rich nuclei in the vicinity of N=20 has become the testing ground par excellence for our understanding and modelling of shell evolution with isospin. In this context, the structure of the transitional nucleus 29Mg is critical. The first quantitative measurements of the single particle structure of 29Mg are reported, using data from the d(28Mg,p gamma)29Mg reaction. Two key states carrying significant ell=3 (f-wave) strength were identified at 2.40 +/- 0.10 (Jpi = 5/2-) and 4.28 +/- 0.04 MeV (7/2-). New state-of-the-art shell model calculations have been performed and the predictions are compared in detail with the experimental results. Whilst the two lowest 7/2- levels are well described, the sharing of single-particle strength disagrees with experiment for both the 3/2- and 5/2- levels and there appear to be general problems with configurations involving the p3/2 neutron orbital and core-excited components. The half-lives of three $\beta$ decaying states of $^{131}_{~49}$In$_{82}$ have been measured with the GRIFFIN $\gamma$-ray spectrometer at the TRIUMF-ISAC facility to be $T_{1/2}(1/2^-)=328(15)$~ms, $T_{1/2}(9/2^+)=265(8)$~ms, and $T_{1/2}(21/2^+)=323(55)$~ms, respectively. The first observation of $\gamma$-rays following the $\beta n$ decay of $^{131}$In into $^{130}$Sn is reported. The $\beta$-delayed neutron emission probability is determined to be $P_{1n} = 12(7)\%$ for the $21/2^+$ state and $2.3(3)\%$ from the combined $1/2^-$ and $9/2^+$ states of $^{131}_{~49}$In$_{82}$ observed in this experiment. A significant expansion of the decay scheme of $^{131}$In, including 17 new excited states and 34 new $\gamma$-ray transitions in $^{131}_{~50}$Sn$_{81}$ is also reported. This leads to large changes in the deduced $\beta$ branching ratios to some of the low-lying states of $^{131}$Sn compared to previous work with implications for the strength of the first-forbidden $\beta$ transitions in the vicinity of doubly-magic $^{132}_{~50}$Sn$_{82}$., Comment: 14 pages, 15 figures, 5 tables

The $T_z$~=~$-\frac{3}{2}$ nucleus ${}^{21}$Mg has been studied by Coulomb excitation on ${}^{196}$Pt and ${}^{110}$Pd targets. A 205.6(1)-keV $\gamma$-ray transition resulting from the Coulomb excitation of the $\frac{5}{2}^+$ ground state to the first excited $\frac{1}{2}^+$ state in ${}^{21}$Mg was observed for the first time. Coulomb excitation cross-section measurements with both targets and a measurement of the half-life of the $\frac{1}{2}^+$ state yield an adopted value of $B(E2;\frac{5}{2}^+\rightarrow\frac{1}{2}^+)$~=~13.3(4)~W.u. A new excited state at 1672(1)~keV with tentative $\frac{9}{2}^+$ assignment was also identified in ${}^{21}$Mg. This work demonstrates large difference of the $B(E2;\frac{5}{2}^+\rightarrow\frac{1}{2}^+)$ values between $T$~=~$\frac{3}{2}$, $A$~=~21 mirror nuclei. The difference is investigated in the shell-model framework employing both isospin conserving and breaking USD interactions and using modern \textsl{ab initio} nuclear structure calculations, which have recently become applicable in the $sd$ shell., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. The half-lives of isotopes around the $N=82$ shell closure are an important ingredient in astrophysical simulations and strongly influence the magnitude of the second $r$-process abundance peak in the $A\sim130$ region. The most neutron-rich $N=82$ nuclei are not accessible to the current generation of radioactive beam facilities and $r$-process simulations must therefore rely on calculations of the half-lives of the isotopes involved. Half-life measurements of the experimentally accessible nuclei in this region are important in order to benchmark these calculations. The half-life of $^{130}$Cd is particularly important as it is used to tune the Gamow-Teller quenching in shell-model calculations for the $\beta$ decay of other nuclei in this region. In this work, the GRIFFIN $\gamma$-ray spectrometer at the TRIUMF-ISAC facility was used to measure the half-life of $^{130}_{~48}$Cd$_{82}$ to be $T_{1/2}= 126(4)$ ms. In addition, the half-lives of the three $\beta$ decaying states of $^{131}_{~49}$In$_{82}$ were measured to be $T_{1/2}(1/2^-)=328(15)$ ms, $T_{1/2}(9/2^+)=265(8)$ ms, and $T_{1/2}(21/2^+)=323(50)$ ms, respectively, providing an important benchmark for half-life calculations in this region., Comment: Talk presented CIPANP2018. 9 pages, LaTeX, 5 pdf figures, 1 png figure

We used the 8$\pi$ $\gamma$-ray spectrometer at the TRIUMF-ISAC radiocative ion beam facility to obtain high-precision branching ratios for $^{19}$Ne $\beta^+$ decay to excited states in $^{19}$F. Together with other previous work, our measurements determine the superallowed $1/2^+ \to 1/2^+$ beta branch to the ground state in $^{19}$F to be 99.9878(7)\%, which is three times more precise than known previously. The implications of these measurements for testing a variety of weak interaction symmetries are discussed briefly.

Gamma-Ray Infrastructure For Fundamental Investigations of Nuclei, GRIFFIN, is a new high-efficiency $\gamma$-ray spectrometer designed for use in decay spectroscopy experiments with low-energy radioactive ion beams provided by TRIUMF's Isotope Separator and Accelerator (ISAC-I) facility. GRIFFIN is composed of sixteen Compton-suppressed large-volume clover-type high-purity germanium (HPGe) $\gamma$-ray detectors combined with a suite of ancillary detection systems and coupled to a custom digital data acquisition system. The infrastructure and detectors of the spectrometer as well as the performance characteristics and the analysis techniques applied to the experimental data are described.

The low energy excited $0_{2,3}^+$ states in $^{96}$Sr are amongst the most prominent examples of shape coexistence across the nuclear landscape. In this work, the neutron $[2s_{1/2}]^2$ content of the $0_{1,2,3}^+$ states in $^{96}$Sr was determined by means of the d($^{95}$Sr,p) transfer reaction at the TRIUMF-ISAC2 facility using the SHARC and TIGRESS arrays. Spectroscopic factors of 0.19(3) and 0.22(3) were extracted for the $^{96}$Sr ground and 1229~keV $0^+$ states, respectively, by fitting the experimental angular distributions to DWBA reaction model calculations. A detailed analysis of the $\gamma$-decay of the isomeric $0_3^+$ state was used to determine a spectroscopic factor of 0.33(13). The experimental results are compared to shell model calculations, which predict negligible spectroscopic strength for the excited $0^+$ states in $^{96}$Sr. The strengths of the excited $0_{2,3}^+$ states were also analyzed within a two-level mixing model and are consistent with a mixing strength of $a^2$=0.40(14) and a difference in intrinsic deformations of $|\Delta \beta|=0.31(3)$. The SPectrometer for Internal Conversion Electrons (SPICE) has been commissioned for use in conjunction with the TIGRESS $\gamma$-ray spectrometer at TRIUMF's ISAC-II facility. SPICE features a permanent rare-earth magnetic lens to collect and direct internal conversion electrons emitted from nuclear reactions to a thick, highly segmented, lithium-drifted silicon detector. This arrangement, combined with TIGRESS, enables in-beam $\gamma$-ray and internal conversion electron spectroscopy to be performed with stable and radioactive ion beams. Technical aspects of the device, capabilities, and initial performance are presented.

Gamma-gamma angular correlation measurements are a powerful tool for identifying the angular momentum (spin) of excited nuclear states involved in a $\gamma$-ray cascade, and for measuring the multipole orders and mixing ratios of transitions. Though the physical angular correlations are fully calculable from first principles, experimental effects can make the extraction of coefficients and thus conclusions about spins and mixing ratios difficult. In this article we present data analysis techniques developed for the clover detectors of the GRIFFIN spectrometer at TRIUMF-ISAC combined with GEANT4 simulations in order to extract accurate experimental results.

The $E0$ transition strength in the $2^+_2 \rightarrow 2^+_1$ transitions of $^{58,60,62}$Ni have been determined for the first time following a series of measurements at the Australian National University (ANU) and the University of Kentucky (UK). The CAESAR Compton-suppressed HPGe array and the Super-e solenoid at ANU were used to measure the $\delta(E2/M1)$ mixing ratio and internal conversion coefficient of each transition following inelastic proton scattering. Level half-lives, $\delta(E2/M1)$ mixing ratios and $\gamma$-ray branching ratios were measured at UK following inelastic neutron scattering. The new spectroscopic information was used to determine the $E0$ strengths. These are the first $2^+ \rightarrow 2^+$ $E0$ transition strengths measured in nuclei with spherical ground states and the $E0$ component is found to be unexpectedly large; in fact, these are amongst the largest $E0$ transition strengths in medium and heavy nuclei reported to date.

The evolution of nuclear magic numbers at extremes of isospin is a topic at the forefront of contemporary nuclear physics. $N=50$ is a prime example, with increasing experimental data coming to light on potentially doubly-magic $^{100}$Sn and $^{78}$Ni at the proton-rich and proton-deficient extremes, respectively. Experimental discrepancies exist in the data for less exotic systems. In $^{86}$Kr the $B(E2;2^+_1\rightarrow0^+_1)$ value - a key indicator of shell evolution - has been experimentally determined by two different methodologies, with the results deviating by $3\sigma$. Here, we report on a new high-precision measurement of this value, as well as the first measured lifetimes and hence transition strengths for the $2^+_2$ and $3^-_{(2)}$ states in the nucleus. The Doppler-shift attenuation method was implemented using the TIGRESS gamma-ray spectrometer and TIGRESS integrated plunger (TIP) device. High-statistics Monte-Carlo simulations were utilized to extract lifetimes in accordance with state-of-the-art methodologies. Lifetimes of $\tau(2^+_1)=336\pm4\text{(stat.)}\pm20\text{(sys.)}$ fs, $\tau(2^+_2)=263\pm9\text{(stat.)}\pm19\text{(sys.)}$ fs and $\tau(3^-_{(2)})=73\pm6\text{(stat.)}\pm32\text{(sys.)}$ fs were extracted. This yields a transition strength for the first-excited state of $B(E2;2^+_1\rightarrow0^+)=259\pm3\text{(stat.)}\pm16\text{(sys.)}$ e$^2$fm$^4$. The measured lifetime disagrees with the previous Doppler-shift attenuation method measurement by more than $3\sigma$, while agreeing well with a previous value extracted from Coulomb excitation. The newly extracted $B(E2;2^+_1\rightarrow0^+_1)$ value indicates a more sudden reduction in collectivity in the $N=50$ isotones approaching $Z=40$., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, to be submitted to Physical Review C

Gamma-Ray Infrastructure For Fundamental Investigations of Nuclei, GRIFFIN, is a new experimental facility for radioactive decay studies at the TRIUMF-ISAC laboratory. This article describes the details of the custom designed GRIFFIN digital data acquisition system. The features of the system that will enable high-precision half-life and branching ratio measurements with levels of uncertainty better than 0.05% are described. The system has demonstrated the ability to effectively collect signals from High-purity germanium crystals at counting rates up to 50kHz while maintaining good energy resolution, detection efficiency and spectral quality.

The Gamma-Ray Infrastructure For Fundamental Investigations of Nuclei, GRIFFIN, is a new experimental facility for radioactive decay studies at the TRIUMF-ISAC laboratory. The performance of the 16 high-purity germanium (HPGe) clover detectors that will make up the GRIFFIN spectrometer is reported. The energy resolution, efficiency, timing resolution, crosstalk and preamplifier properties of each crystal were measured using a combination of analogue and digital data acquisition techniques. The absolute efficiency and add-back factors are determined for the energy range of 80 - 3450 keV. The detectors show excellent performance with an average over all 64 crystals of a FWHM energy resolution of 1.89(6) keV and relative efficiency with respect to a 3"x3" NaI detector of 41(1)% at 1.3 MeV.

A high-precision half-life measurement for the superallowed Fermi $\beta^+$ emitter $^{22}$Mg was performed at the TRIUMF-ISAC facility using a 4$\pi$ proportional gas counter. The result of $T_{1/2} = 3.87400 \pm 0.00079$ s is a factor of 3 more precise than the previously adopted world average and resolves a discrepancy between the two previously published $^{22}$Mg half-life measurements., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures

The GRIFFIN spectrometer at TRIUMF-ISAC has been used to study excited states and transitions in $^{50}$Sc following the $\beta$-decay of $^{50}$Ca. Branching ratios were determined from the measured $\gamma$-ray intensities, and angular correlations of $\gamma$ rays have been used to firmly assign the spins of excited states. The presence of an isomeric state that decays by an $M3$ transition with a $B(M3)$ strength of 13.6(7)\,W.u. has been confirmed. We compare with the first {\it ab initio} calculations of $B(M3$) strengths in light and medium-mass nuclei from the valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group approach, using consistently derived effective Hamiltonians and $M3$ operator. The experimental data are well reproduced for isoscalar $M3$ transitions when using bare $g$-factors, but the strength of isovector $M3$ transitions are found to be underestimated by an order of magnitude.

The excited states of the proton emitter $^{151}$Lu were reinvestigated in a recoil-decay tagging experiment at the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyv\"askyl\"a (JYFL). The level scheme built on the ground state of $^{151}$Lu was updated with five new $\gamma$-ray transitions. Large-scale shell model calculations were carried out to interpret the experimental level scheme. It is found that the excitation energies of states above the $27/2^-$ and $23/2^+$ isomeric levels can be sensitive to excitations from $g_{7/2}$ and $d_{5/2}$ to single-particle orbitals above $N=Z=64$., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables

Many-body nuclear theory utilizing microscopic or chiral potentials has developed to the point that collectivity might be dealt with in an {\it ab initio} framework without the use of effective charges; for example with the proper evolution of operators, or alternatively, through the use of an appropriate and manageable subset of particle-hole excitations. We present a precise determination of $E2$ strength in $^{22}$Mg and its mirror $^{22}$Ne by Coulomb excitation, allowing for rigorous comparisons with theory. No-core symplectic shell-model calculations were performed and agree with the new $B(E2)$ values while in-medium similarity-renormalization-group calculations consistently underpredict the absolute strength, with the missing strength found to have both isoscalar and isovector components., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. The quenching of the experimental spectroscopic factor for proton emission from the short-lived $d_{3/2}$ isomeric state in $^{151m}$Lu was a long-standing problem. In the present work, proton emission from this isomer has been reinvestigated in an experiment at the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyv\"{a}skyl\"{a}. The proton-decay energy and half-life of this isomer were measured to be 1295(5) keV and 15.4(8) $\mu$s, respectively, in agreement with another recent study. These new experimental data can resolve the discrepancy in the spectroscopic factor calculated using the spherical WKB approximation. Using the R-matrix approach it is found that the proton formation probability indicates no significant hindrance for the proton decay of $^{151m}$Lu., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Several lifetimes in 23Mg have been determined for the first time using the Doppler-shift attenuation method. A Monte Carlo simulation code has been written to model the gamma-ray line shape. An upper limit of 12 fs at the 95% C.L. has been obtained for the astrophysically important 7787 keV state.

The levels in 26Na with single particle character have been observed for the first time using the d(25Na,p gamma) reaction at 5 MeV/nucleon. The measured excitation energies and the deduced spectroscopic factors are in good overall agreement with (0+1) hbar-omega shell model calculations performed in a complete spsdfp basis and incorporating a reduction in the N=20 gap. Notably, the 1p3/2 neutron configuration was found to play an enhanced role in the structure of the low-lying negative parity states in 26Na, compared to the isotone 28Al. Thus, the lowering of the 1p3/2 orbital relative to the 0f7/2 occurring in the neighbouring Z=10 and 12 nuclei -- 25,27Ne and 27,29Mg -- is seen also to occur at Z=11 and further strengthens the constraints on the modelling of the transition into the island of inversion., Comment: 6 figures
