Signals with varying periodicity frequently appear in real-world phenomena, necessitating the development of efficient modelling techniques to map the measured nonlinear timeline to linear time. Here we propose a regression model that allows for a representation of periodic and dynamic patterns observed in time series data. The model incorporates a hidden strictly increasing stochastic process that represents the instantaneous frequency, allowing the model to adapt and accurately capture varying time scales. A case study focusing on age estimation of narwhal tusks is presented, where cyclic element signals associated with annual growth layer groups are analyzed. We apply the methodology to data from one such tusk collected in West Greenland and use the fitted model to estimate the age of the narwhal. The proposed method is validated using simulated signals with known cycle counts and practical considerations and modelling challenges are discussed in detail. This research contributes to the field of time series analysis, providing a tool and valuable insights for understanding and modeling complex cyclic patterns in diverse domains.

Kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs) have been proven as reliable systems for astrophysical observations, especially in the millimetre range. Their compact size enables to optimally fill the focal plane, thus boosting sensitivity. The KISS (KIDs Interferometric Spectral Surveyor) instrument is a millimetre camera that consists of two KID arrays of 316 pixels each coupled to a Martin-Puplett interferometer (MPI). The addition of the MPI grants the KIDs camera the ability to provide spectral information in the 100 and 300 GHz range. In this paper we report the main properties of the KISS instrument and its observations. We also describe the calibration and data analysis procedures used. We present a complete model of the observed data including the sky signal and several identified systematics. We have developed a full photometric and spectroscopic data analysis pipeline that translates our observations into science-ready products. We show examples of the results of this pipeline on selected sources: Moon, Jupiter and Venus. We note the presence of a deficit of response with respect to expectations and laboratory measurements. The detectors noise level is consistent with values obtained during laboratory measurements, pointing to a sub-optimal coupling between the instrument and the telescope as the most probable origin for the problem. This deficit is large enough as to prevent the detection of galaxy clusters, which were KISS main scientific objective. Nevertheless, we have demonstrated the feasibility of this kind of instrument, in the prospect for other KID interferometers (such as the CONCERTO instrument). Host-pathogen interactions consist of an attack by the pathogen, frequently a defense by the host and possibly a counter-defense by the pathogen. Here, we present a game-theoretical approach to describing such interactions. We consider a game where the host and pathogen are players and they can choose between the strategies of defense (or counter-defense) and no response. Specifically, they may or may not produce a toxin and an enzyme degrading the toxin, respectively. We consider that the host and pathogen must also incur a cost for toxin or enzyme production. We highlight both the sequential and non-sequential versions of the game and determine the Nash equilibria. Further, we resolve a paradox occurring in that interplay. If the inactivating enzyme is very efficient, producing the toxin becomes useless, leading to the enzyme being no longer required. Then, production of the defense becomes useful again. In game theory, such situations can be described by a generalized matching pennies game. As a novel result, we find under which conditions the defense cycle leads to a steady state or to an oscillation. We obtain, for saturating dose-response kinetics and considering monotonic cost functions, 'partial (counter-)defense' strategies as pure Nash equilibria. The goal of the PolarKID project is testing a new method for the measurement of polarized sources, in order to identify all the possible instrumental systematic effects that could impact the detection of CMB B-modes of polarization. It employs the KISS (KIDs Interferometer Spectrum Survey) instrument coupled to a sky simulator and to sources such as point-like black bodies (simulating planets), a dipole (extended source) and a polarizer. Modern astrophysics relies on intricate instrument setups to meet the demands of sensitivity, sky coverage, and multi-channel observations. An example is the CONCERTO project, employing advanced technology like kinetic inductance detectors and a Martin-Puplett interferometer. This instrument, installed at the APEX telescope atop the Chajnantor plateau, began commissioning observations in April 2021. Following a successful commissioning phase that concluded in June 2021, CONCERTO was offered to the scientific community for observations, with a final observing run in December 2022. CONCERTO boasts an 18.5 arcmin field of view and a spectral resolution down to 1.45 GHz in the 130-310 GHz electromagnetic band. We developed a comprehensive instrument model of CONCERTO inspired by Fourier transform spectrometry principles to optimize performance and address systematic errors. This model integrates instrument noises, subsystem characteristics, and celestial signals, leveraging both physical data and simulations. Our methodology involves delineating simulation components, executing on-sky simulations, and comparing results with real observations. The resulting instrument model is pivotal, enabling a precise error correction and enhancing the reliability of astrophysical insights obtained from observational data. We present the data-processing algorithms and the performance of CONCERTO (CarbON CII line in post-rEionisation and ReionisaTiOn epoch) in continuum by analysing the data from the commissioning and scientific observations. The beam pattern is characterized by an effective FWHM of 31.9 $\pm$ 0.6" and 34.4 $\pm$ 1.0" for high-frequency (HF) and low-frequency (LF) bands. The main beam is slightly elongated with a mean eccentricity of 0.46. Two error beams of $\sim$65" and $\sim$130" are characterized, enabling the estimate of a main beam efficiency of $\sim$0.52. The field of view is accurately reconstructed and presents coherent distortions between the HF and LF arrays. LEKID parameters were robustly determined for 80% of the read tones. Cross-talks between LEKIDs are the first cause of flagging, followed by an excess of eccentricity for $\sim$10% of the LEKIDs, all located in a given region of the field of view. On the 44 scans of Uranus selected for the absolute photometric calibration, 72.5% and 78.2% of the LEKIDs are selected as valid detectors with a probability >70%. By comparing Uranus measurements with a model, we obtain calibration factors of 19.5$\pm$0.6 [Hz/Jy] and 25.6$\pm$0.9 [Hz/Jy] for HF and LF. The point-source continuum measurement uncertainties are 3.0% and 3.4% for HF and LF bands. The RMS of CONCERTO maps is verified to evolve as proportional to the inverse square root of integration time. The measured NEFDs for HF and LF are 115$\pm$2 mJy/beam$\cdot$s$^{1/2}$ and 95$\pm$1 mJy/beam$\cdot$s$^{1/2}$, obtained using CONCERTO data on the COSMOS field for a mean precipitable water vapour and elevation of 0.81 mm and 55.7 deg. CONCERTO demonstrates unique capabilities in fast dual-band spectral mapping with a $\sim$18.5' instantaneous field-of-view. Recently an algorithm was given in [Garde & Hyv\"onen, SIAM J. Math. Anal., 2024] for exact direct reconstruction of any $L^2$ perturbation from linearised data in the two-dimensional linearised Calder\'on problem. It was a simple forward substitution method based on a 2D Zernike basis. We now consider the three-dimensional linearised Calder\'on problem in a ball, and use a 3D Zernike basis to obtain a method for exact direct reconstruction of any $L^3$ perturbation from linearised data. The method is likewise a forward substitution, hence making it very efficient to numerically implement. Moreover, the 3D method only makes use of a relatively small subset of boundary measurements for exact reconstruction, compared to a full $L^2$ basis of current densities., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

The poorly studied variable star V390 Sco, previously classified as a Mira pulsator, was detected in a brightening event by the ESA Gaia satellite in September 2023. This work presents an analysis of available archival multifrequency photometric data of this target, along with our spectroscopic observations. Our findings lead to the conclusion that V390 Sco is a new symbiotic star identified by Gaia, currently undergoing a classical symbiotic outburst. Additionally, we uncovered three prior outbursts of this system through archival photometry. The outbursts recur approximately every 2330 - 2400 days, and we hypothesize the periastron passage in an eccentric orbit may trigger them, similarly to the case of BX Mon, DD Mic, or MWC 560. A detailed investigation into the nature of the donor star suggested that V390 Sco is an S-type symbiotic star, likely hosting a less evolved, semiregularly pulsating giant donor, but not a Mira variable., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, 1 table; accepted in Astronomische Nachrichten

This work implements and numerically tests the direct reconstruction algorithm introduced in [Garde & Hyv\"onen, SIAM J. Math. Anal., 2024] for two-dimensional linearized electrical impedance tomography. Although the algorithm was originally designed for a linearized setting, we numerically demonstrate its functionality when the input data is the corresponding change in the current-to-voltage boundary operator. Both idealized continuum model and practical complete electrode model measurements are considered in the numerical studies, with the examined domain being either the unit disk or a convex polygon. Special attention is paid to regularizing the algorithm and its connections to the singular value decomposition of a truncated linearized forward map, as well as to the explicit triangular structures originating from the properties of the employed Zernike polynomial basis for the conductivity., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables

CONCERTO (CarbON CII line in post-rEionization and ReionizaTiOn) is a low-resolution Fourier transform spectrometer dedicated to the study of star-forming galaxies and clusters of galaxies in the transparent millimeter windows from the ground. It is characterized by a wide instantaneous 18.6 arcmin field of view, operates at 130-310 GHz, and was installed on the 12-meter Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) telescope at 5100 m above sea level. CONCERTO's double focal planes host two arrays of 2152 kinetic inductance detectors and represent a pioneering instrument to meet a state-of-the-art scientific challenge. Electric propulsion requires exhaustive ground test campaigns to obtain an accurate characterization of the propulsion devices, or thrusters, used by the spacecraft. Among the many plasma parameters, accurately measured during the tests, that of the ion velocity is key, and can be measured using non-intrusive tools such as Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF) diagnostics. The ion velocity is inferred by Doppler shift measurements that presupposes a precise and accurate knowledge of the wavelength of excitation of the ions at rest. Today electric propulsion is moving towards the use of Krypton as a propellant, due to the dramatic increase in cost of the more advantageous Xenon gas propellant, commonly used until now. Planets grow in rotating disks of dust and gas around forming stars, some of which can subsequently collide in giant impacts after the gas component is removed from the disk. Monitoring programs with the warm Spitzer mission have recorded significant and rapid changes in mid-infrared output for several stars, interpreted as variations in the surface area of warm dusty material ejected by planetary-scale collisions and heated by the central star: e.g., NGC 2354-ID8, HD 166191 and V844 Persei. Here we report combined observations of the young (about 300 Myr), solar-like star ASASSN-21qj: an infrared brightening consistent with a blackbody temperature of 1000 K and a luminosity of 4 percent of that of the star lasting for about 1000 days, partially overlapping in time with a complex and deep wavelength-dependent optical eclipse that lasted for about 500 days. The optical eclipse started 2.5 years after the infrared brightening, implying an orbital period of at least that duration. These observations are consistent with a collision between two exoplanets of several to tens of Earth masses at 2 to 16 au from the central star. Such an impact produces a hot, highly-extended post-impact remnant with sufficient luminosity to explain the infrared observations. As large language models (LLMs) become more capable, there is an urgent need for interpretable and transparent tools. Current methods are difficult to implement, and accessible tools to analyze model internals are lacking. To bridge this gap, we present DeepDecipher - an API and interface for probing neurons in transformer models' MLP layers. DeepDecipher makes the outputs of advanced interpretability techniques for LLMs readily available. The easy-to-use interface also makes inspecting these complex models more intuitive. This paper outlines DeepDecipher's design and capabilities. We demonstrate how to analyze neurons, compare models, and gain insights into model behavior. For example, we contrast DeepDecipher's functionality with similar tools like Neuroscope and OpenAI's Neuron Explainer. DeepDecipher enables efficient, scalable analysis of LLMs. By granting access to state-of-the-art interpretability methods, DeepDecipher makes LLMs more transparent, trustworthy, and safe. We derive exact reconstruction methods for cracks consisting of unions of Lipschitz hypersurfaces in the context of Calder\'on's inverse conductivity problem. Our first method obtains upper bounds for the unknown cracks, bounds that can be shrunk to obtain the exact crack locations upon verifying certain operator inequalities for differences of the local Neumann-to-Dirichlet maps. This method can simultaneously handle perfectly insulating and perfectly conducting cracks, and it appears to be the first rigorous reconstruction method capable of this. Our second method assumes that only perfectly insulating cracks or only perfectly conducting cracks are present. Once more using operator inequalities, this method generates approximate cracks that are guaranteed to be subsets of the unknown cracks that are being reconstructed., Comment: 16 pages

V618 Sgr was previously classified as an R CrB-type variable and later as a possible symbiotic star. Our study aims to analyse the nature of this target, which is currently undergoing significant brightening in properties similar to those of known symbiotic novae. We analyse literature information, photometric observations, and 35 new optical spectra. Our findings strongly suggest that V618 Sgr is an eclipsing symbiotic nova currently in outburst. Additionally, since the star has demonstrated at least two similar brightenings in the past, we propose that V618 Sgr could be the first known galactic symbiotic nova observed in repeated outbursts of this type and may host a relatively massive white dwarf., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, 1 table; accepted in MNRAS

The influence of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has been widely spread over the last years, establishing new public and privat policies. Education has also been experiencing this change by aligning with the previous goals. In this chapter, we briefly summarize the main activities conducted under the Grant APS22.2003 'Service-based learning of the SDGs related to a responsible production and consumption (A-BASE-DE-PROS)', which uses the SDG 12 as a guide line to raise the awareness of the importance of the 2030 Agenda among undergraduate and secondary-school students. In general, the service-based learning has increased the knowledge of the SDGs among the students. We present a synchronized multisensory dataset for accurate and robust indoor localization: the Lund University Vision, Radio, and Audio (LuViRA) Dataset. The dataset includes color images, corresponding depth maps, inertial measurement unit (IMU) readings, channel response between a 5G massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) testbed and user equipment, audio recorded by 12 microphones, and accurate six degrees of freedom (6DOF) pose ground truth of 0.5 mm. We synchronize these sensors to ensure that all data is recorded simultaneously. A camera, speaker, and transmit antenna are placed on top of a slowly moving service robot, and 89 trajectories are recorded. Each trajectory includes 20 to 50 seconds of recorded sensor data and ground truth labels. Data from different sensors can be used separately or jointly to perform localization tasks, and data from the motion capture (mocap) system is used to verify the results obtained by the localization algorithms. The main aim of this dataset is to enable research on sensor fusion with the most commonly used sensors for localization tasks. We report on observations of the extended environment of the bright Be star $\gamma$-Cas performed using intensity interferometry measurements within its H$\alpha$ emission line. These observations were performed using a modified version of the I2C intensity interferometry instrument installed onto the 1.54 meter M\'{e}O optical metrology telescope and a portable 1-meter telescope (T1M). In order to better constrain the extent of the H$\alpha$ envelope, observations were performed for two different positions of the T1M telescope, corresponding to an intermediate and long baselines in which the extended region was partially and fully resolved. We find that the observed data are consistent with past interferometric observations of $\gamma$-Cas. These observations demonstrate the capability to equip optical telescopes of different optical designs with intensity interferometry capabilities and illustrate the potential to scale a similar system onto many additional telescopes.

We extend recent results on discrete approximations of the Laplacian in $\mathbf{R}^d$ with norm resolvent convergence to the corresponding results for Dirichlet and Neumann Laplacians on a half-space. The resolvents of the discrete Dirichlet/Neumann Laplacians are embedded into the continuum using natural discretization and embedding operators. Norm resolvent convergence to their continuous counterparts is proven with a quadratic rate in the mesh size. These results generalize with a limited rate to also include operators with a real, bounded, and H\"older continuous potential, as well as certain functions of the Dirichlet/Neumann Laplacians, including any positive real power., Comment: 11 pages

We present evidence that the nebular cocoon and bow-shock emission nebula putatively and recently reported as deriving from the 9th magnitude "runaway" star HD 185806 is the previously discovered but obscure planetary nebula WHTZ 1 (Ra 7). It has a Gaia DR3 G~16 blue ionizing star at its geometric centre. In this work, we present the discovery and characterization of a new southern S-type symbiotic star, DeGaPe 35. We have obtained the low-resolution spectroscopic observations and supplemented them with photometry from Gaia DR3 and other surveys. The optical spectra of this target show prominent emission lines, including highly ionized [Fe VII] and O VI lines. The cool component of this symbiotic binary is an M4-5 giant with effective temperature ~ 3 380 - 3 470 K and luminosity ~ 3 000 L$_\odot$ (for the adopted distance of 3 kpc). The hot component is a shell-burning white dwarf. The photometric observations of the Gaia satellite, published recently in the Gaia DR3 suggested the variability with the period of about 700 - 800 days that we tentatively attributed to the orbital motion of the binary., Comment: accepted for publication in New Astronomy; 7 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

This work extends the results of [Garde and Hyv\"onen, Math. Comp. 91:1925-1953] on series reversion for Calder\'on's problem to the case of realistic electrode measurements, with both the internal admittivity of the investigated body and the contact admittivity at the electrode-object interfaces treated as unknowns. The forward operator, sending the internal and contact admittivities to the linear electrode current-to-potential map, is first proven to be analytic. A reversion of the corresponding Taylor series yields a family of numerical methods of different orders for solving the inverse problem of electrical impedance tomography, with the possibility to employ different parametrizations for the unknown internal and boundary admittivities. The functionality and convergence of the methods is established only if the employed finite-dimensional parametrization of the unknowns allows the Fr\'echet derivative of the forward map to be injective, but we also heuristically extend the methods to more general settings by resorting to regularization motivated by Bayesian inversion. The performance of this regularized approach is tested via three-dimensional numerical examples based on simulated data.
