1. Interpretation of two SINBAD photon-leakage benchmarks with nuclear library ENDF/B-VIII.0 and Monte Carlo code MCS

Abstract

A review of the documentation and an interpretation of the NEA-1517/74 and NEA-1517/80 shielding benchmarks (measurements of photon leakage flux from a hollow sphere with a central 14 MeV neutron source) from the SINBAD database with the Monte Carlo code MCS and the most up-to-date ENDF/B-VIII.0 neutron data library are conducted. The two analyzed benchmarks describe satisfactorily the energy resolution of the photon detector and the geometry of the spherical samples with inner beam tube, tritium target and cooling water circuit, but lack information regarding the detector geometry and the distances of shields and collimators relatively to the neutron source and the detector. Calculations are therefore conducted for a sphere model only. A preliminary verification of MCS neutron-photon calculations against MCNP6.2 is first conducted, then the impact of modelling the inner beam tube, tritium target and cooling water circuit is assessed. Finally, a comparison of calculated results with the libraries ENDF/B-VII.1 and ENDF/B-VIII.0 against the measurements is conducted and shows reasonable agreement. The MCS and MCNP inputs used for the interpretation are available as supplementary material of this article.

Abstract

The design studies related to a prompt γ-rays in vivo neutron activation analysis facility are described. The designs were based on two neutron sources: 252Cf and 241Am-Be, four collimator materials: polyethylene, 5% boric-acid doped polyethylene, graphite, and the heavy water, two collimator shapes: pyramidal and rectangular, and two configurations: unilateral and bilateral. The aim of this work was improving the uniformity of the gamma production rate distribution with depth in a large biological sample. For the sample, a water phantom measuring 32cm x 16cm x 100cm was simulated. The simulations were performed by MCNPX 2.4.0 Monte Carlo code. This study recommends the prompt γ-rays IVNAA facility in the bilateral configuration with graphite as a collimator material and 241Am-Be as neutron source.

Abstract

ObjectiveOur objective was to investigate the mechanisms that govern natural killer (NK) cell responses to HIV, with a focus on specific receptor-ligand interactions involved in HIV recognition by NK cells.Design and MethodsWe first performed a mass cytometry-based screen of NK cell receptor expression patterns in healthy controls and HIV+ individuals. We then focused mechanistic studies on the expression and function of T cell immunoreceptor with Ig and ITIM domains (TIGIT).ResultsThe mass cytometry screen revealed that TIGIT is upregulated on NK cells of untreated HIV+ women, but not in antiretroviral-treated women. TIGIT is an inhibitory receptor that is thought to mark exhausted NK cells; however, blocking TIGIT did not improve anti-HIV NK cell responses. In fact, the TIGIT ligands CD112 and CD155 were not upregulated on CD4+ T cells in vitro or in vivo, providing an explanation for the lack of benefit from TIGIT blockade. TIGIT expression marked a unique subset of NK cells that express significantly higher levels of NK cell activating receptors (DNAM-1, NTB-A, 2B4, CD2) and exhibit a mature/adaptive phenotype (CD57hi, NKG2Chi, LILRB1hi, FcRγlo, Syklo). Furthermore, TIGIT+ NK cells had increased responses to mock-infected and HIV-infected autologous CD4+ T cells, and to PMA/ionomycin, cytokine stimulation and the K562 cancer cell line.ConclusionsTIGIT expression is increased on NK cells from untreated HIV+ individuals. Although TIGIT does not participate directly in NK cell recognition of HIV, it marks a population of mature/adaptive NK cells with increased functional responses.

Abstract

The dramatic increases in allergy and allergic diseases which have occurred over the past half-century have been strongly associated with changes in early life events. Changes in lifestyle, which have affected nutrition, allergen and microbial exposures, have been strongly implicated as explanations for changing allergy susceptibility. To what extent these influences affect the foetus during pregnancy rather than the infant post- natally is uncertain. In all probability there is a sequence of events through pregnancy and early post-natal life which in combination change the outcomes. Successful pregnancy is associated with a Th-2, allergy- biased immunological environment which results in virtually all neonates having an apparent allergic pattern of immune responsiveness. Under normal circumstances this is rapidly down-regulated after birth, most likely affected by the evolving human microbiome. Interactions between genetic and environmental variation, both during pregnancy and in the first months of the infant’s life, perturb this normal sequence and lead to a sustained Th-2-biased allergic response. The future for prevention rests in identifying the key influences that should highlight strategies to turn the clock back to an era of low prevalence of allergic diseases.

Abstract

Using data corresponding to 6.0 fb-1 of pp̅ collisions at √s=1.96 TeV collected by the CDF II detector, we present a cross section measurement of top-quark pair production with an additional radiated photon in the central region with 10 GeV or more of transverse energy tt̅ γ. The events are selected by looking for a lepton (ℓ or μ), a photon (γ), significant transverse momentum imbalance (E̸T), large total transverse energy, and three or more jets, with at least one identified as containing a b quark (b). Using an event selection optimized for the tt̅ γ candidate sample, we also measure the cross section of tt̅ (σtt̅ ). We measure the tt̅ γ cross section (σtt̅ γ) to be 0.18±0.08 pb, and the ratio of σtt̅ γ to σtt̅ to be 0.024±0.009. We observe a probability of 0.0015 (3.0 standard deviations) of the background (non-tt̅ γ events alone producing 30 events or more.

27 páginas, 17 figuras, 5 tablas.-- CDF Collaboration: et al., We present results of a search for anomalous production of two photons together with an electron, muon, tau lepton, missing transverse energy, or jets using p (p) over bar collision data from 1.1-2.0 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). The event yields and kinematic distributions are examined for signs of new physics without favoring a specific model of new physics. The results are consistent with the standard model expectations. The search employs several new analysis techniques that significantly reduce instrumental backgrounds in channels with an electron and missing transverse energy., We thank the Fermilab staff and the technical staffs of the participating institutions for their vital contributions. Abstract

The process of photoproduction of electron-positron pairs in bent single crystals is considered in this paper. In particular, it is shown that the probability of the process for gamma-quanta with energies from 100 GeV on is significantly higher than the one in an amorphous medium. A possible scenario for the experimental validation of the process is discussed and the positive features of the photoproduction in bent crystals compared to straight ones are underlined from the point of view of possible applications., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

The exclusive gammais not an element of(T) signal has a small standard model cross section and is thus a channel sensitive to new physics. This signature is predicted by models with a superlight gravitino or with large extra spatial dimensions. We search for such signals at the Collider Detector at Fermilab, using 87 pb(-1) of data at roots = 1.8 TeV, and extract 95% C.L. limits on these processes. A limit of 221 GeV is set on the scale \F\(1/2) in supersymmetric models. For 4, 6, and 8 extra dimensions, model-dependent limits on the fundamental mass scale M-D of 0.55, 0.58, and 0.60 TeV, respectively, are found. We also specify a "pseudo-model-independent" method of comparing the results to theoretical predictions.
