Abstract: A search for charm hadron decays into two muons plus one or more hadrons has been carried out using a hybrid emulsion spectrometer. This technique is sensitive to modes with missing neutrals, e.g. π0μ+μ− and ϱ±μ+μ−, as well as to constrained modes having visible invariant masses equal to those of charm states. No evidence for any such decays has been found, which allows upper limits at the 90% confidence level as low as 1.8 × 10−4 to be placed on the branching fractions for charm-changing neutral-current and lepton-number violating decay modes.

Abstract: The CLEO II detector is used to search for the production of ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}2}$ states in two-photon interactions. We use the signature ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}2}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}J/\ensuremath{\psi}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}${\mathit{l}}^{+}$${\mathit{l}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ with l=e,\ensuremath{\mu}. Using 1.49 ${\mathrm{fb}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ of data taken with beam energies near 5.29 GeV, the two-photon width of the ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}2}$ is determined to be \ensuremath{\Gamma}(${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}2}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma})=1.08\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.30(stat)\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.26(syst) keV, in agreement with predictions from perturbative QCD.

Abstract: A measurement of the cross section for the combined two-photon production of charged pion and kaon pairs is performed using 1.2~$\rm fb^{-1}$ of data collected by the CLEO~II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. The cross section is measured at invariant masses of the two-photon system between 1.5 and 5.0 GeV/$c^2$, and at scattering angles more than $53^\circ$ away from the $\gamma\gamma$ collision axis in the $\gamma\gamma$ center-of-mass frame. The large background of leptonic events is suppressed by utilizing the CsI calorimeter in conjunction with the muon chamber system. The reported cross section is compared with leading order QCD models as well as previous experiments. Abstract: The relative branching fraction RK = Γ(D0 → K−μ+v)/Γ(D0 → μ−X) has been measured by Fermilab experiment E653, using D0 mesons produced by 600 GeV π−. The semimuonic decay sample of 232 events was identified by the decay chain D ∗+ → D 0 π + , D 0 → μ + h − X , where h is a hadron. The Kμv component was extracted from the joint distribution of these events in the D0 decay variables Mmin and pTh. We find RK = 0.472 ± 0.051 (stat) ± 0.040 (sys), and use a world average of the D0 → Klv branching fraction to obtain the D0 inclusive semimuonic branching fraction B(D0 → μ+X) = (7.67 ± 1.13)%.

Abstract: The branching fractions for the five-charged-particle decays of the [tau] lepton have been measured in [ital e][sup +][ital e][sup [minus]] annihilations using the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. Assuming all charged particles to be pions, the results are [ital B](3[pi][sup [minus]]2[pi][sup +][ge]0 neutrals [nu][sub [tau]])=(0.097[plus minus]0.005[plus minus]0.011)%, [ital B](3[pi][sup [minus]]2[pi][sup +][nu][sub [tau]])=(0.077[plus minus]0.005 [plus minus]0.009)%, [ital B](3[pi][sup [minus]]2[pi][sup +][pi][sup 0][nu][sub [tau]])=(0.019[plus minus]0.004[plus minus]0.004)%, and [ital B](3[pi][sup [minus]]2[pi][sup +]2[pi][sup 0][nu][sub [tau]])[lt]0.011% at the 90% C.L. [ital B](3[pi][sup [minus]]2[pi][sup [minus]][pi][sup 0][nu][sub [tau]]) is measured for the first time by exclusive [pi][sup 0] reconstruction. The results are compared with the predictions from the partially conserved-axial-current and conserved-vector-current hypotheses assuming isospin invariance.

Abstract: We have measured the vector-pseudoscalar mass splitting M(D s * + )-M(D s + )=144.22±0.47±0.37 MeV significantly more precisely than the previous world average. We minimize the systematic errors by also measuring the vector-pseudoscalar mass difference M(D* 0 )-M(D 0 ) using the radiative decay D* 0 →D 0 γ, obtaining [M(D s * + )-M(D s + )]-[M(D* 0 )-M(D 0 )] =2.09±0.47±0.37 MeV. This is then combined with our previous high-precision measurement of M(D* 0 )-M(D 0 ), which used the decay D* 0 →D 0 π 0 . We also measure the mass difference M(D s + )-M(D + )=99.5±0.6±0.3 MeV, using the φπ + decay modes of the D s + and D + mesons.

This method enhances both speed and reliability of emulsion analysis. Details of the application of this technique to the analysis of Fermilab experiment E653 are described.

Abstract: Using data from the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we measure [ital scrB]([tau][sup [minus]][r arrow][ital h][sup [minus]][pi][sup 0][nu][sub [tau]]) where [ital h][sup [minus]] refers to either [pi][sup [minus]] or [ital K][sup [minus]]. We use three different methods to measure this branching fraction. The combined result is [ital scrB]([tau][sup [minus]][r arrow][ital h][sup [minus]][pi][sup 0][nu][sub [tau]])=0.2587[plus minus]0.0012[plus minus]0.0042, in good agreement with standard model predictions.

Abstract: Using the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring we have measured the ratio of branching fractions, B([ital D][sup +][r arrow][ital K][sup [minus]][pi][sup +][pi][sup +])/([ital D][sup 0][r arrow][ital K][sup [minus]][pi][sup +])=2.35[plus minus]0.16[plus minus]0.16. Our recent measurement of [ital scrB]([ital D][sup 0][r arrow][ital K][sup [minus]][pi][sup +]) then gives [ital scrB]([ital D][sup +][r arrow][ital K][sup [minus]][pi][sup +][pi][sup +])=(9.3[plus minus]0.6[plus minus]0.8)%.

Abstract: Using the CLEO II data sample, with an integrated luminosity of 1.8 fb[sup [minus]1] at and near the [Upsilon](4[ital S]) resonance, we have observed a signal for [ital D][sup 0][r arrow][ital K][sup +][pi][sup [minus]], which could be due to either [ital D][sup 0][ital [bar D]][sup 0] mixing or doubly Cabibbo suppressed decay, or a combination of the two. We find [ital scrB]([ital D][sup 0][r arrow][ital K][sup +][pi][sup [minus]])/[ital scrB]([ital D][sup 0][r arrow][ital K][sup [minus]][pi][sup +])=0.0077[plus minus]0 .0025(stat) [plus minus]0.0025(syst).

Abstract: Using the CLEO II detector and a sample of 955 000 [Upsilon](4S) decays we have confirmed charmless semileptonic decays of [ital B] mesons. In the momentum interval 2.3--2.6 GeV/[ital c] we observe an excess of 107[plus minus]15[plus minus]11 leptons, which we attribute to [ital b][r arrow][ital ul][nu]. This result yields a model-dependent range of values for [vert bar][ital V][sub [ital u][ital b]]/[ital V][sub [ital c][ital b]][vert bar] that is lower than has been obtained in previous studies. For the inclusive spectator model of Altarelli [ital et] [ital al]. we find [vert bar][ital V][sub [ital u][ital b]]/[ital V][sub [ital c][ital b]][vert bar]=0.076[plus minus]0.008. Models that describe [ital b][r arrow][ital ul][nu] with a limited set of exclusive final states give [vert bar][ital V][sub [ital u][ital b]]/[ital V][sub [ital c][ital b]][vert bar]=0.06[minus]0.10.

Abstract: We report results from a search for the decays ${\mathit{B}}^{0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$, ${\mathit{B}}^{0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{K}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$, and ${\mathit{B}}^{0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{K}}^{+}$${\mathit{K}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$. We find 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions, ${\mathit{B}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}$2.9\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}5}$, ${\mathit{B}}_{\mathit{K}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}$2.6\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}5}$, and ${\mathit{B}}_{\mathit{K}\mathit{K}}$0.7\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}5}$. While there is no statistically significant signal in the individual modes, the sum of ${\mathit{B}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}$ and ${\mathit{B}}_{\mathit{K}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}$ exceeds zero with a significance of more than 4 standard deviations, indicating that we have observed charmless hadronic B decays.

Abstract: We observe the [Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup +] baryon decaying to [Lambda][sub [ital c]][sup +][pi][sup 0] and measure the mass difference [ital M]([Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup +])[minus][ital M]([Lambda][sub [ital c]][sup +]) to be 168.5[plus minus]0.2 MeV/[ital c][sup 2]. We also measure the mass differences [ital M]([Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup ++])[minus][ital M]([Lambda][sub [ital c]][sup +]) and [ital M]([Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup 0])[minus][ital M]([Lambda][sub [ital c]][sup +]) with improved precision and determine the isospin mass splittings [ital M]([Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup ++])[minus][ital M]([Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup 0]) and [ital M]([Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup +])[minus][ital M]([Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup 0]) to be 1.1[plus minus]0.4[plus minus]0.1 MeV/[ital c][sup 2] and 1.4[plus minus]0.5[plus minus]0.3 MeV/[ital c][sup 2], respectively. Our results indicate that the light quark mass difference does not dominate the isospin mass splitting in [Sigma][sub [ital c]].

Abstract: We report the first observation of the Cabibo disfavored semileptonic decay mode D+ → ρ(770)0 μ+v and measure its decay rate relative to the Cabibbo favored mode D + → K ∗ (892) 0 μ + v to be Λ(D + → ρ(770) 0 μ + v Λ(D + → K ∗ (892) 0 μ + v) = 0.044 0.031 −0.025 ( stat. ) ± 0.014 ( syst. ) . The results are compared to theoretical predictions and to previous experimental upper limits.

Abstract: A search for charm production in the coherent diffractive dissociation reaction pSi→XSi was carried out for the modes D0→K−π+, D0→K−π+π+π−, and D+→K−π+π+. No charm signals were observed, and the 90% confidence level upper limit for coherent charm pair production was determined to be 26 μb per silicon nucleus. The results are interpreted as an upper limit of 0.2% on the amount of intrinsic charm in the proton.

Abstract: We have measured the [ital B][sup 0][ital [bar B]0] mixing probability, [chi][sub [ital d]], using a sample of 965 000 [ital B[bar B]] pairs from [Upsilon](4[ital S]) decays. Counting dilepton events, we find [chi][sub [ital d]]=0.157[plus minus]0.016[plus minus]0.018[sub [minus]0.021][sup +0.028]. Using tagged [ital B][sup 0] events, we find [chi][sub [ital d]]=0.149[plus minus]0.023[plus minus]0.019[plus minus]0.010. The first (second) error is statistical (systematic). The third error reflects a [plus minus]15% uncertainty in the assumption, made in both cases, that charged and neutral [ital B] pairs contribute equally to dilepton events. We also obtain a limit on the [ital CP] impurity in the [ital B][sub [ital d]][sup 0] system, [vert bar]Re([epsilon][sub [ital B]][sup 0])[vert bar][lt]0.045 at 90% C.L.

Abstract: Upper limits at the 90% confidence level are presented for four- and five-prong semimuonic decays of charm mesons. From a study of four-prong vertices we find B ( D 0 → K − π + π − μ + ν )/ B ( D 0 → K − μ + ν ) B (D 0 → ( K ∗ (892)π) − μ + ν)/B(D 0 → K − μ + ν) . The five-prong vertices yield the result B ( D S + → η ′ μ + ν ) / B ( D S + → φμ + ν )

Abstract: We present a study of the Cabibbo-allowed semimuonic decay modes of the DS+ produced in 600 GeV c π − -emulsion interactions. From a signal of 18.7±4.9−0.7+0.4 events in the DS+ → oμ+υ channel, the product of production cross section and partial width is measured with respect to that for D + → K ∗0 μ + υ to be ( σ(D S + ) σ(D + )) . (Λ(D S + → oμ + ν)Λ(D + → K ∗0 μ + ν)) = 0.56 ± 0.14 ± 0.12. The form factor ratios in the decay, obtained by fitting to the decay angles and q2, are A 2 (0) 1 (0) = 2.1 −0.5 +0.6 ± 0.2 and V (0) A 1 (0) = 2.3 −0.9 +1.1 ± 0.4 , where A1 (0) and A2 (0) are the axial vector form factors and V(0) is the vector form factor, evaluated at q2 = 0. The first observation of DS+ → (ημ+υ + η'μ+υ) is also reported, and Γ (D S + → (ημ + υ + η'μ + υ)) Γ (D S + → oμ + υ) is determined to be 3.9 ± 1.6.

Abstract: We report on the production characteristics and total cross section for 9 beauty hadron pairs produced by a 600 GeV/ c π − beam, the first such information in this energy region. The events were detected in the hybrid emulsion spectrometer of Fermilab Experiment E653. The measured pair cross section for all χ F , assuming linear A dependence, is 33±11 (stat.)±6(syst.) nb/nucleon. Fits of the inclusive single-hadron production distribution to the forms d σ d χ F ∝ (1−|χ F −χ 0 |) n and d σ d p T 2 ∝ exp (−bp t 2 ) give n=5.0 −2.1−1.7 +2.7+1.7 , χ 0 =0.06 −0.07−0.03 +0.06+0.02 , and b=0.13 −0.04−0.02 +0.05+0.02 ( GeV /c −2 . .The pairs tend to be produced back-to-back.

Abstract: The tau lepton electron branching fraction has been measured with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring as [ital B][sub [ital e]]=0.1749[plus minus]0.0014[plus minus]0.0022, with the first error statistical and the second systematic. The measurement involves counting electron-positron annihilation events in which both taus decay to electrons, and normalizing to the number of tau-pair decays expected from the measured luminosity. Detected photons in these events constitute a definitive observation of tau decay radiation.

Abstract: The branching ratio for the decay mode D + → K ∗0 μ + ν has been measured with two methods. The first uses D0→K−μ+ν for normalization, and yields the result B( D + → K ∗0 μ + ν)=(3.25±0.71±0.75)% . From this method we also obtain the direct measurement Γ( D + → K ∗0 μ + ν)/Γ( D 0 → K − μ + ν)=0.43±0.09±0.09 . The second method uses the mode D+→K−π+π+ for normalization and yields B( D + → K ∗0 μ + ν)=(4.18±0.66±0.96)% . Combining the results of the two methods yields B( D + → K ∗0 μ + ν)=(3.57±0.96)% .

Abstract: We present total and differential cross sections for charm mesons produced in 600 GeV/c π- emulsion interactions. Fits to d2σ/dxF dpT2∞ (1−|xF|)nexp (-bpT2) for 676 electronically reconstructed D mesons with xF>0 give n=4.25±0.24 (stat.)±0.23 (syst.) and b=0.76±0.03±0.03 (GeV/c)-2. The total inclusive D+ and D0 cross sections are σ(π-N→D±; xF>0) = 8.66±0.46±1.96μb nucleon and σ(π - N→D 0 D 0 ; x F >0)=22.05±1.37±4.82μb nucleonk, where a linear dependence on the mean atomic weight of the target is assumed. These results are compared to next-to-leading order QCD predictions.

Abstract: A measurement of the form factor ratios in the decay D + → K ∗ (892) 0 μ + ν is obtained by fitting to the decay angles and q2 of 305 events. The results, evaluated at q2 = 0, are A2(0)/A1(0) = 0.82+0.22−0.23 (stat.)±0.11 (sys.) and V(0)/A1(0) = 2.00+0.34−0.32±0.16, where A1 and A2 are the axial vector form factors and V is the vector form factor. The corresponding ratio of the longitudinal to transverse polarization of the K ∗0 is 1.18±0.18±0.08. These results are compared with other experimental results and with theoretical predictions.

Abstract: Using the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have determined the inclusive {ital B}{sup *} cross section above the {Upsilon}(4{ital S}) resonance in the energy range from 10.61 to 10.70 GeV. We also report a new measurement of the energy of the {ital B}{sup *}{r arrow}{ital B}{gamma} transition photon of 46.2{plus minus}0.3{plus minus}0.8 MeV.

Abstract: Using the CLEO-II detector, we have obtained evidence for a new meson decaying to $D^0 K^+$. Its mass is $2573.2^{+1.7}_{-1.6}\pm 0.8\pm 0.5$ {}~MeV/$c^2$ and its width is $16^{+5}_{-4}\pm 3$~MeV/$c^2$. Abstract: Using a sample of 935000 BB pairs collected with the CLEO-II detector at the Cornell Storage Ring, we have obtained upper limits on the branching ratios for the b→ul - υ#58 processes B - →ωl - υ#58, B - →ρ 0 l - υ#58, and B 0 →ρ + l - υ#58. The combined result using the relationships among the widths for these three modes is B(B - →ρ 0 l - υ#58)

Abstract: Using data from the CLEO II detector at CESR, we measure the [tau]-lepton mass by exploiting the unique kinematics of events in which both [tau]'s decay hadronically. The result is [ital m][sub [tau]]=1777.8[plus minus]0.7[plus minus]1.7 MeV/[ital c][sup 2]. By comparing our result with other measurements near [tau]-pair threshold, we extract an upper limit on the [tau]-neutrino mass of 75 MeV/[ital c][sup 2] at 95% confidence level.

32. Muon pair production in 16 and 22 GeV πCu collisions

Abstract: We have measured inclusive muon pair production by 16 and 22 GeV π − on a copper target in a wide aperture magnetic spectrometer. We interpret the data in terms of quark annihilation models and find approximate scaling in the variable τ = M 2 / s over a wide energy range. At large values of τ the yield of μ-pairs produced by π − is ∼ 100 times that produced by protons. This effect can be understood by assuming appropriate quark distributions for π − and p and thus provides experimental insight into the inner structure of these particles.

33. Trimuon and dimuon events produced by 10.5-GeV/cμ−on lead

Abstract: We report on the production of 158 trimuon and 637 dimuon events by 10.5-GeV/c muons incident on lead. The sensitivity of the experiment was typically 1 event per picobarn per nucleon. It is shown that the majority of the trimuon events are due to QED trident production. We present differential and total cross sections for this process and establish that muons obey Fermi-Dirac statistics at a confidence level of 8 standard deviations. Approximately 10% of the trimuons are due to other processes, most probably diffraction of the virtual photon. Upper limits on the production of particles with a three-muon decay mode and on inelastic virtual-photon Compton scattering are obtained. The dimuon events can be accounted for by tridents where one of the muons lies outside the acceptance of the apparatus and by the production of $\ensuremath{\pi}$ and $K$ mesons which subsequently decay into a muon. Upper limits on prompt single-muon production are given.

34. On the polarization of low mass dimuons produced in hadronic interactions

Abstract: We have examined the angular distribution of massive μ+μ− pairs produced in 22 GeV/c π−Cu interactions. We find that the virtual photons which give rise to the process γv→μ+μ− are mainly longitudinally polarized. This contradicts the simple quark-antiquark annihilation model indicating that this is not the dominant production mechanism for the bulk of the data. However, for large fractional momentum of the incident q better agreement with the g q annihilation hypothesis is obtained.

35. Study of theη′Meson from the ReactionK−p→Λη′at 2.18 GeV/c

Abstract: We present new data on the ${\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ meson based on 1414 ${\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ events obtained from a 1 100 000-picture exposure of the BNL 31-inch hydrogen bubble chamber to a 2.18-GeV/c ${K}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ beam. We have measured the ${\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ mass, width, and branching ratios. We find that the very-forward-produced ${\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ mesons have anisotropic angular distributions with respect to the incident ${K}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ beam, suggesting that possibly ${J}^{\mathrm{PC}}={2}^{\ensuremath{-}+}$; however, the standard Dalitz-plot analyses favor ${J}^{\mathrm{PC}}={0}^{\ensuremath{-}+}$ over ${2}^{\ensuremath{-}+}$.

36. Determination of the mass, width, and (ΣπΛπ) branching ratio of theΣ(1381)baryon

Abstract: The mass, width, and (ΣπΛπ) branching ratio of the Y1* or Σ(1381) are reported from a large-statistics sample for which systematic effects are included. The mass values for Y1*+, Y1*−, and Y1*0 are found to be 1381 ± 1 MeV, 1383 ± 2 MeV, and 1380 ± 2 MeV, respectively; an average width of 34 ± 2 MeV is found. The Σπ branching fraction is found to be 0.17 ± 0.04. Good agreement between the latest experimental data for the JP=32+ decimet and the expectations of SU3 is obtained by using equal spacing in mass squared and by using the average of the cube of the decay momenta in comparing the partial widths.

Abstract: We present data on dimuon production by 16 GeV π+ and π− beams on a Cu target. From the data we evaluate, for π−N collisions, the fraction of dimuon events that originate from the annihilation process qq → μ+μ−. Using this information the experimentally determined cross section for the process qq → μ+μ− is observed to be in agreement with the Drell-Yan model over a wide range of incident energies. The observed deviations from exact scaling are of the order predicted by QCD calculations for the Q2-dependence of the nucleon and the pion structure function.

Abstract: We observe no A/sub 2//sup + -/ production in ..pi../sup + -/p collisions near threshold. Because our upper limits for the A/sub 2/ cross-section limit s-wave production, the rapid rise of the cross section from threshold observed by other experiments must be due to p-wave production. Discussion of this result and a comparison to the data of Binnie et al. are given. (AIP)

Abstract: We have measured the $A$ dependence of muon-nucleus scattering at an incident energy of 10.5 GeV and for $0.2l{Q}^{2}l2.4$ (${\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}/\mathit{c})}^{2}$, $1l\ensuremath{\nu}l9$ GeV. We observe shadowing over the entire region of ${Q}^{2}$, in disagreement with previous measurements. Current theoretical models predict shadowing only for ${Q}^{2}\ensuremath{\lesssim}1$ (${\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}/\mathit{c})}^{2}$.

Abstract: We observe no structure in the X± spectra as our mass resolution of 12 MeV FWHM. Thus the X0(957) of Binnie et al., is determined to be the I = 0 η′. A braid structure at a mass of 976 MeV can be accommodated.

Abstract: We analyze data on the transverse momentum distribution of dimuons produced by 22 GeV and 16 GeV π − incident on a Cu target. We evaluate the quantum chromodynamic lowest order perturbation contributions and also introduce an intrinsic transverse momentum k T on the partons relative to their parent hadrons. The analysis of our data leads to 〈 k T 〉=0.30−0.35 GeV. We discuss our result in comparison with analyses of data at higher energies.

43. Experimental determination of the structure function of the pion

Abstract: It was shown in the preceeding letter that dimuon production by 22 GeV pions proceeds in part through qq annihilations in agreement with the Drell-Yan model. Using these data we extract the quark distribution function of the pion. Comparison of our structure function with that obtained from data at higher energy reveals differences compatible with the QCD calculations of the Q 2 -dependence (scale breaking) of the pion structure function.

Abstract: We have searched for the production by virtual photons of short-lived particles that exhibit muonic decay. We used Brookhaven's 10.5 GeV/c muon beam and examined the two and three-muon final states. The sample of 158 trimuon events is due almost entirely to QED tridents. The sample of 673 dimuons can be accounted for in part by asymmetric tridents and in part by the decay of π and K mesons. We obtain an upper limit for the production of other short-lived particles of the order of Bδ < 150 pb/nucleon, where B is the branching ratio for muonic decay. From the trident sample we establish that muons obey Fermi-Dirac statistics at the level of 8 standard deviations.

Abstract: The spin and parity analysis of the ${\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}(958)$ from the distribution of events on the ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\eta}$ and the ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ Dalitz plots has been shown to favor ${J}^{P}={0}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ over ${2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, but not conclusively. The Brookhaven National Laboratory-University of Michigan data reported here indicate anisotropies in the production and decay correlation angular distributions. Earlier Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory data dilute these effects. The observed anisotropies weaken the evidence for a ${J}^{P}={0}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ assignment for the ${\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}(958)$.
