Experiments with plasmas having nearly equal concentrations of deuterium and tritium have been carried out on TFTR. To date (September 1995), the maximum fusion power has been 10.7 MW, using 39.5 MW of neutral beam heating, in a supershot discharge and 6.7 MW in a high beta P discharge following a current ramp-down. The fusion power density in the core of the plasma has reached 2.8 MW/m3, exceeding that expected in the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). The energy confinement time tau E is observed to increase in DT, relative to D plasmas, by 20% and the n1(0).T1(0). tau E product by 55%. The improvement in thermal confinement is caused primarily by a decrease in ion heat conductivity in both supershot and limiter H mode discharges. Extensive lithium pellet injection increased the confinement time to 0.27 s and enabled higher current operation in both supershot and high beta P discharges. First measurements of the confined alpha particles have been performed and found to be in good agreement with TRANSP simulations assuming classical confinement. Measurements of the alpha ash profile have been compared with simulations using particle transport coefficients from helium gas puffing experiments. The loss of energetic alpha particles to a detector at the bottom of the vessel is well described by the first-orbit loss mechanism. No loss due to alpha particle driven instabilities has yet been observed. ICRF heating of a DT plasma, using the second harmonic of tritium, has been demonstrated. DT experiments on TFTR will continue both to explore the physics underlying the ITER design and to examine some of the physics issues associated with an advanced tokamak reactor

The deuterium-tritium (D-T) experimental program on the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) is underway and routine tritium operations have been established. The technology upgrades made to the TFTR facility have been demonstrated to be sufficient for supporting both operations and maintenance for an extended D-T campaign. To date fusion power has been increased to {approximately}9 MW and several physics results of importance to the D-T reactor regime have been obtained: electron temperature, ion temperature, and plasma stored energy all increase substantially in the D-T regime relative to the D-D regime at the same neutral beam power and comparable limiter conditioning; possible alpha electron heating is indicated and energy confinement improvement with average ion mass is observed; and alpha particle losses appear to be classical with no evidence of TAE mode activity up to the P{sub FUS} {approximately}6 MW level. Instability in the TAE mode frequency range has been observed at P{sub FUS} > 7 MW and its effect on performance is under investigation. Preparations are underway to enhance the alpha particle density further by increasing fusion power and by extending the neutral beam pulse length to permit alpha particle effects of relevance to the ITER regime to be more fullymore » explored.« less

Recent experiments in the Advanced Toroidal Facility (ATF) [Fusion Technol. 10, 179 (1986)] have been directed toward investigations of the basic physics mechanisms that control confinement in this device. Measurements of the density fluctuations throughout the plasma volume have provided indications for the existence of theoretically predicted dissipative trapped electron and resistive interchange instabilities. These identifications are supported by results of dynamic configuration scans of the magnetic fields during which the magnetic well volume, shear, and fraction of confined trapped particles are changed continuously. The influence of magnetic islands on the global confinement has been studied by deliberately applying error fields which strongly perturb the nested flux‐surface geometry, and the effects of electric fields have been investigated by means of biased limiter experiments.

An overview of recent AFT (Advanced Toroidal Facility) experimental results and program plans is presented, with emphasis on the role of magnetic configuration controls in transport studies. The ATF operating space is bounded by a density limit that effectively sets a limit on the energy confinement time tau /sub E/. Although this limit is not solely due to impurities, it has recently been raised by improved cleanliness following titanium gettering. This has led to collapse-free neutral beam injection discharges with global tau /sub E/ approximately=16 ms. Preliminary experiments show that stored energy and bootstrap current are sensitive to details of the magnetic configuration. >

Experiments involving plasma improvement, confinement scaling, bootstrap currents, and edge fluctuations have been carried out in the Advanced Toroidal Facility (ATF) torsatron [Fusion Technol. 10, 179 (1986)]. Average densities ne≤9×1019 m−3 have been obtained, with global energy confinement times τ*E≤20 msec. Confinement times generally follow the stellarator/torsatron empirical scaling law, τSL =0.17×P−0.58n0.69eB0.84a2R0.75 (with τSL in seconds, power P in megawatts, density ne in 1020 m−3, and plasma radius a and major radius R in meters). Gas injection during neutral beam injection (NBI) causes increases in ne, so that τ*E does not decrease during NBI. Edge plasma fluctuations are found to exhibit a mode change near the peak of the energy confinement time. Plasma currents observed during electron cyclotron heating have been identified as bootstrap currents.

Access to the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) second stability regime has been achieved in the Advanced Toroidal Facility (ATF) torsatron [Fusion Technol. 10, 179 (1986)]. Operation with a field error that reduced the plasma radius and edge rotational transform resulted in peaked pressure profiles and increased Shafranov shift that lowered the theoretical transition to ideal MHD second stability to β0≊1.3%; the experimental β values (β0≤3%) are well above this transition. The measured magnetic fluctuations decrease with increasing β, and the pressure profile broadens, consistent with the theoretical expectations for self‐stabilization of resistive interchange modes. Initial results from experiments with the field error removed show that the pressure profile is now broader. These later discharges are characterized by a transition to improved (×2–3) confinement and a marked change in the edge density fluctuation spectrum, but the causal relationship of these changes is not yet clear.

An overview of recent experimental results from the Advanced Toroidal Facility (ATF) is presented. Beam-heated plasmas with {bar n}{sub e} of 10{sup 20} m{sup {minus}3} and {tau}{sub E}{asterisk} of {approx}20 ms have been achieved. Thermal collapse of the plasmas is mitigated by wall conditioning and particle fueling. Confinement time scales positively with density and magnetic field, offsetting deterioration with power. Results fit the LHD scaling and the drift wave turbulence scaling. Bootstrap currents observed during ECH agree with neoclassical theory in magnitude and parameter dependences. Fast reciprocating Langmuir probe measurements show that edge fluctuations in ATF have many similarities to those in the TEXT tokamak. The location of {tilde B} instabilities has shifted outward in radius, consistent with the broader pressure profiles. 14 refs., 6 figs.

In the AlSi process, the I&E fuel element is assembled in a two-piece aluminum container consisting of an outer cylindrical shell and an inner tube containing an integrally impacted cap wafer which forms the top end and cap during canning. Both autoclave failures and reactor failures have been attributed to porosity in the AlSi and non-wetting of the aluminum wafer with AlSi. Porosity and non-wetting in the area of the cap closure provides a pathway for water to penetrate through to the uranium from small defects in the weld which are not detected by visual weld inspection or radiography. These quality deficiencies are caused from two apparent fuel problems, (1) the disparity in mass between the spire and cap wafer which results in uneven pre-heating rates for spire and cap wafer and freezing of gas bubbles under the cap wafer, and (2) the heavyoxide and lubricant contamination on the underside and side of the wafer which causes non-wetting and outgassing. In December, 1958, an additional cleaning step was introduced in the 313 Manufacturing process to improve cap wetting. This change involved degreasing followed by a caustic etch to remove imbedded lubricants in the cap wafer. Electron cyclotron heating (ECH) experiments in the Advanced Toroidal Facility (ATF) torsatron exploit unique capabilities for external control of the magnetic configuration and long‐pulse operation. The ECH power deposition profile is determined from the change of the electron temperature profiles during ECH power turn‐off and from power modulation. The measured dependence of absorbed power on the magnetic field agrees well with that obtained from ray tracing calculations for first‐pass and multiple‐bounce absorption. In ATF, parameters of basic physics interest (magnetic shear, magnetic well/hill, and contained trapped particle fraction) have been varied dynamically during a single long‐pulse (up to 20‐s) discharge (dynamic configuration control). Varying a single physics parameter while keeping others fixed elucidates the parameter’s influence on plasma behavior. Modulation of the magnetic well significantly affects the plasma stored energy. This may be related to the observed electron density fluctuations, which are consistent with theoretical predictions of pressure‐gradient‐driven resistive interchange turbulence. Measurements of the electric potential with a heavy ion beam probe show positive potential in the core of typical ECH discharges and the presence of a velocity shear layer near the edge.

Experiments have been performed under the coordination of the International Tokamak Physics Activity (ITPA) on several tokamaks, including ASDEX Upgrade (AUG), JET and DIII-D, to characterize the increased Ion cyclotron range of frequency (ICRF) antenna loading achieved by optimizing the position of gas injection relative to the RF antennas. On DIII-D, AUG and JET (with the ITER-Like Wall) a 50% increase in the antenna loading was observed when injecting deuterium in ELMy H-mode plasmas using mid-plane inlets close to the powered antennas instead of divertor injection and, with smaller improvement when using gas inlets located at the top of the machine. The gas injection rate required for such improvements (~0.7 × 1022 el s−1 in AUG, ~1.0 × 1022 el s−1 in JET) is compatible with the use of this technique to optimize ICRF heating during the development of plasma scenarios and no degradation of confinement was observed when using the mid-plane or top inlets compared with divertor valves. An increase in the scrape-off layer (SOL) density was measured when switching gas injection from divertor to outer mid-plane or top. On JET and DIII-D, the measured SOL density increase when using main chamber puffing is consistent with the antenna coupling resistance increase provided that the distance between the measurement lines of sight and the injection location is taken into account. Optimized gas injection was also found to be beneficial for reducing tungsten (W) sputtering at the AUG antenna limiters, and also to reduce slightly the W and nickel (Ni) content in JET plasmas. Modeling the specific effects of divertor/top/mid-plane injection on the outer mid-plane density was carried out using both the EDGE2D-EIRENE and EMC3-EIRENE plasma boundary code packages; simulations indeed indicate that outer mid-plane gas injection maximizes the density in the mid-plane close to the injection point with qualitative agreement with the AUG SOL density measurements for EMC3-EIRENE. Field line tracing for ITER in the 15 MA Q DT = 10 reference scenario indicates that the planned gas injection system could be used to tailor the density in front the antennas. Benchmarking of EMC3-EIRENE against AUG and JET data is planned as a first step towards the ITER SOL modelling required to quantify the effect of gas injection on the SOL density in front of the antennas.

Recent experiments in the Advanced Toroidal Facility (ATF) torsatron [Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research 1990 (IAEA, Vienna, in press)] have emphasized the role of magnetic configuration control in transport studies. Long‐pulse plasma operation up to 20 sec has been achieved with electron cyclotron heating (ECH). With neutral beam injection (NBI) power of ≥1 MW, global energy confinement times of 30 msec have been obtained with line‐average densities up to 1.3×1020 m−3. The energy confinement and the operational space in ATF are roughly the same as those in tokamaks of similar size and field. The empirical scaling observed is similar to gyro‐reduced Bohm scaling with favorable dependences on density and field offsetting an unfavorable power dependence. The toroidal current measured during ECH is identified as the bootstrap current. The observed currents agree well with predictions of neoclassical theory in magnitude and in parametric dependence.
