Abstract

An overview of the multi-messenger capabilities of the Pierre Auger Observatory is presented. The techniques and performance of searching for Ultra-High Energy neutrinos, photons and neutrons are described. Some of the most relevant results are reviewed, such as stringent upper bounds that were placed to a flux of diffuse cosmogenic neutrinos and photons, bounds placed on neutrinos emitted from compact binary mergers that were detected by LIGO and Virgo during their first and second observing runs, as well as searches for high energy photons and neutrons from the Galactic center that constrain the properties of the putative Galactic PeVatron, observed by the H.E.S.S. collaboration. The observation of directional correlations between ultra-high energy cosmic rays and either high energy astrophysical neutrinos or specific source populations, weighted by their electromagnetic radiation, are also discussed. They constitute additional multi-messenger approaches aimed at identifying the sources of high energy cosmic rays.

Abstract

We report a first measurement for ultrahigh energy cosmic rays of the correlation between the depth of shower maximum and the signal in the water Cherenkov stations of air-showers registered simultaneously by the fluorescence and the surface detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Such a correlation measurement is a unique feature of a hybrid air-shower observatory with sensitivity to both the electromagnetic and muonic components. It allows an accurate determination of the spread of primary masses in the cosmic-ray flux. Up till now, constraints on the spread of primary masses have been dominated by systematic uncertainties. The present correlation measurement is not affected by systematics in the measurement of the depth of shower maximum or the signal in the water Cherenkov stations. The analysis relies on general characteristics of air showers and is thus robust also with respect to uncertainties in hadronic event generators. The observed correlation in the energy range around the ‘ankle’ at lg⁡(E/eV)=18.5–19.0 differs significantly from expectations for pure primary cosmic-ray compositions. A light composition made up of proton and helium only is equally inconsistent with observations. The data are explained well by a mixed composition including nuclei with mass A>4. Scenarios such as the proton dip model, with almost pure compositions, are thus disfavored as the sole explanation of the ultrahigh-energy cosmic-ray flux at Earth. Abstract

This work reports on the development of a multichannel analyzer (MCA) circuit for use in radiation detection. The MCA is based on a fast analog-to-digital converter (ADC) plus a digital circuitry programmed on a complex programmable logic device (CPLD). The ADC digitizes the input signals with high accuracy and low nonlinearity while the CPLD performs the histogramming process of the acquired voltage amplitudes. The MCA basic operations are carried on by a logic state machine implemented in the CPLD, triggered by a 20-MHz clock. This approach has allowed us to reduce the circuit dead time to 200 ns. Other performance parameters are related to the used ADC chips. Results are shown that illustrate competitive results as compared to commercially available MCAs.

Abstract

We summarize our recent advances in gaseous photomultipliers (GPMTs) for the UV and visible spectral range. They combine photocathodes and advanced multi-stage Gas Electron Multipliers (GEMs). Principles of operation and properties are discussed, with emphasis on time and localization resolutions, ion-feedback suppression, novel electron multipliers and sealed photon detectors for visible light.

Abstract

A 100×100 mm2 2D imaging detector, based on a triple-GEM gaseous multiplier, striped x−y readout anode and discrete delay-line readout, is presented. The fast (2.1 ns tap−1) delay-line circuit was designed to match the anode-charge signal profile, namely its rise-time and length. The detector's imaging capability was systematically studied in Ar/CO2 (70/30) with 5.9 keV X-rays; x−y resolution of σ=0.05 and 0.1 mm for top and bottom anode strips, respectively, and integral non-linearity of ∼0.15% are demonstrated.

Abstract

A study of a dual-GEM detector coupled to a strip readout anode is described. The effects of the induction electric field and GEM-to-anode gap are presented, for an operation in atmospheric pressure Ar/CO2 (70/30) and Ar/CH4 (95/5). Visible gain and anode signal pulse-shapes, measured with 5.9 keV X-rays are presented for 1–6 mm wide induction gaps and for induction fields ranging up to 6 kV cm−1. The spatial distribution of the anode charge is provided for induction gaps of 2–12 mm. The results are useful for matching the detector parameters to the position recording circuit requirements.

Abstract

The present work reports on the development of a digital system for image acquisition which is able to process two electric signals of amplitude varying between 0 and 10 V. The system correlates both signals in a two-dimensional (2-D) histogram. X and Y coordinates for every event are obtained from the amplitudes of two coincident signals. The hardware consists of two analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), two complex programmable logic devices (CPLDs), and one 2 MB static random access memory (SRAM), implemented in a card that is plugged into personal computers. The data acquisition rate may be as high as 1.0 /spl times/ 10/sup 6/ events per second, and does not depend on the PC processor. The software code has been written in the Delphi environment using assembly routines for the I/O bus operations. Abstract

A thorough search of the sky exposed at the Pierre Auger Cosmic Ray Observatory reveals no statistically significant excess of events in any small solid angle that would be indicative of a flux of neutral particles from a discrete source. The search covers from −90◦ to +15◦ in declination using four different energy ranges above 1 EeV (1018 eV). The method used in this search is more sensitive to neutrons than to photons. The upper limit on a neutron flux is derived for a dense grid of directions for each of the four energy ranges. Abstract

The thick GEM (THGEM) [1] is an "expanded" GEM, economically produced in the PCB industry by simple drilling and etching in G-10 or other insulating materials (fig. 1). Similar to GEM, its operation is based on electron gas avalanche multiplication in sub-mm holes, resulting in very high gain and fast signals. Due to its large hole size, the THGEM is particularly efficient in transporting the electrons into and from the holes, leading to efficient single-electron detection and effective cascaded operation. The THGEM provides true pixilated radiation localization, ns signals, high gain and high rate capability. For a comprehensive summary of the THGEM properties, the reader is referred to [2, 3]. 11. A multiwire proportional counter for very high counting rates

Abstract

Preliminary measurements in a proportional counter with two independently counting wires showed that counting rates up to 106 counts s−1 wire−1 can be reached without critical loss in the `true versus measured' linearity relation. Results obtained with a detector containing 30 active wires (2 mm pitch) are presented. With each wire is associated a fast pre-amplifier and a discriminator channel. Global counting rates in excess of 107 events s−1 are reported. Dead-time losses are corrected by use of simple mathematical-modelling functions. Data-acquisition systems are described for one-dimensional (real-time) and two-dimensional (off-line) position-sensitive detection systems.

Abstract

A wall-less ion-counting nanodosemeter, conceived for precise ionisation-cluster measurements in an accelerator environment, is described. The technique provides an accurate means for counting single radiation-induced ions, in dilute gas models of condensed matter. The sensitive volume dimensions, a few tissue-equivalent nm in diameter by a few tens of nm, are tunable by a proper choice of the gas pressure and electric fields; nanometric sub-sections can be electronically selected. Detailed ion-cluster distributions are presented for protons of 7.15, 13.6 and 19.3 MeV, in biologically relevant DNA-like sensitive volumes of low-pressure propane. Experimental results are compared to model simulations.

Abstract

The present work reports on the development of a digital system for image acquisition which is able to process two electric signals of amplitude varying between 0 and 10 V. The system correlates both signals in a two-dimensional histogram. X and Y coordinates for every event are derived from the amplitudes of the two coincident signals. The hardware basically consists of two analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), control electronics, and one 1M Static Random Access Memory (SRAM), implemented in a card that is plugged into any personal computer with an ISA bus. The data acquisition rate may be as high as 1.0 /spl times/ 10/sup 6/ events per second, and does not depend on the PC processor. The software code has been written in the Delphi environment using assembly routines. Image sizes may be chosen from 128 /spl times/ 128 to 1024 /spl times/ 1024 pixels and may be viewed in three-dimensional graphics. Images are shown to illustrate the applicability to two-dimensional position sensitive X-ray detectors.
