Abstract: We present results on dijet production via hard color-singlet exchange in proton-antiproton collisions at √s = 630 GeV and 1800 GeV using the DØ detector. The fraction of dijet events produced via color-singlet exchange is measured as a function of jet transverse energy, separation in pseudorapidity between the two highest transverse energy jets, and proton-antiproton center-of-mass energy. The results are consistent with a color-singlet fraction that increases with an increasing fraction of quark-initiated processes and inconsistent with two-gluon models for the hard color-singlet. © 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: The DZERO detector is used to study proton-antiproton collisions at the 1800 GeV and 630 GeV center-of-mass energies available at the Fermilab Tevatron. To measure jets, the detector uses a sampling calorimeter composed of uranium and liquid argon as the passive and active media respectively. Understanding the jet energy calibration is not only crucial for precision tests of QCD, but also for the measurement of particle masses and the determination of physics backgrounds associated with new phenomena. This paper describes the energy calibration of jets observed with the DZERO detector at the two proton-antiproton center-of-mass energies in the transverse energy and pseudorapidity range ET>8 GeV and pseudorapidity, 94 pages with 52 figures (included in the 94 pages)

Abstract: We have searched for first generation scalar leptoquark (LQ) pairs in the enu+jets channel using ppbar collider data (integrated luminosity= 115 pb^-1) collected by the DZero experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron during 1992-96. The analysis yields no candidate events. We combine the results with those from the ee+jets and nunu+jets channels to obtain 95% confidence level (CL) upper limits on the LQ pair production cross section as a function of mass and of beta, the branching fraction to a charged lepton. Comparing with the next-to-leading order theory, we set 95% CL lower limits on the LQ mass of 225, 204, and 79 GeV/c^2 for beta=1, 1/2, and 0, respectively.

Abstract: We have searched for the flavor-changing neutral current decay b -> s mu+ mu- in p pbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV with the DO detector at Fermilab. We determine the 90% confidence level limit for the branching fraction to be B(b -> X_s mu+ mu-) < 3.2 x 10^{-4}. We argue that this limit is more stringent than the best published limit on this decay rate.

Abstract: We have searched for the pair production of first generation scalar leptoquarks in the $\mathrm{eejj}$ channel using the full data set $(123{\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1})$ collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron during 1992--1996. We observe no candidates with an expected background of approximately 0.4 events. Comparing the experimental 95% confidence level upper limit to theoretical calculations of the cross section with the assumption of a 100% branching fraction of $\mathrm{eq}$, we set a lower limit on the mass of a first generation scalar leptoquark of $225\mathrm{GeV}{/c}^{2}$. The results of this analysis rule out the interpretation of the excess of high ${Q}^{2}$ events at DESY HERA as leptoquarks which decay exclusively to $\mathrm{eq}$.

7. The airborne laser

Abstract: The Airborne Laser (ABL), a high-flying megawatt laser that pinpoints a ballistic missile lifting off hundreds of kilometers away, is an alternative to terminal defenses. The utility of the ABL in future regional conflicts, and the consequent policy options the United States can exercise, will be highly dependent on its range. The ABL's range in turn is determined by the accuracy with which the primary laser beam can be pointed, the power density it can deliver, and the structural design of the missile being attacked. This paper's examination of these issues, including all the estimates of the ABL's capabilities, are from the author's own analyses. The findings combine information found in the open literature with the basic physics and engineering involved in propagating intense laser beams through the atmosphere.

Abstract: We have measured the $\mathrm{WW}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ gauge boson coupling parameters using $p\overline{p}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\nu}\ensuremath{\gamma}+X$ ( $\ensuremath{\ell}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}e,\ensuremath{\mu}$) events at $\sqrt{s}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1.8$ TeV. The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $92.8{\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, were collected using the D\O{} detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The measured cross section times branching ratio for $p\overline{p}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}W\ensuremath{\gamma}+X$ with ${p}_{T}^{\ensuremath{\gamma}}g10$ GeV/c and ${R}_{\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\gamma}}g0.7$ is ${11.3}_{\ensuremath{-}1.5}^{+1.7}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.5$ pb, in agreement with the standard model prediction. The 1 degree of freedom 95% confidence level limits on individual CP-conserving parameters are $\ensuremath{-}0.93l\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\kappa}l0.94$ and $\ensuremath{-}0.31l\ensuremath{\lambda}l0.29$. Similar limits are set on the CP-violating coupling parameters.

Abstract: We present results from a search for anomalous $\mathrm{WW}$ and $\mathrm{WZ}$ production in $p\overline{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1.8\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{TeV}$. We used $p\overline{p}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}e\ensuremath{\nu}\mathrm{jjX}$ events observed during the 1992--1993 run of the Fermilab Tevatron collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $13.7\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.7{\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. A fit to the transverse momentum spectrum of the $W$ boson yields direct limits on the CP-conserving anomalous $\mathrm{WW}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $\mathrm{WWZ}$ coupling parameters of $\ensuremath{-}0.9l\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\kappa}l1.1$ (with $\ensuremath{\lambda}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0$) and $\ensuremath{-}0.6l\ensuremath{\lambda}l0.7$ (with $\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\kappa}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0$) at the 95% confidence level, for a form factor scale $\ensuremath{\Lambda}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1.5\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{TeV}$, assuming that the $\mathrm{WW}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $\mathrm{WWZ}$ coupling parameters are equal.

Abstract: We have searched for associated production of the lightest chargino W 1 and next-to-lightest neutralino Z 2 of the minimal supersymmetric standard model in pp collisions at √s=1.8 TeV using the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 12.5±0.7pb -1 were examined for events containing three isolated leptons. No evidence for W 1 Z 2 pair production was found. Limits on s(W 1 Z 2 )B(W 1 →lνZ 1 )B(Z 2 →llZ 1 ) are presented.

Abstract: We report on a search for pair production of a fourth generation charge -1/3 quark (b') in pbar p collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron using an integrated luminosity of 93 pb^-1. Both quarks are assumed to decay via flavor changing neutral currents (FCNC). The search uses the signatures gamma + 3 jets + mu-tag and 2 gamma + 2 jets. We see no significant excess of events over the expected background. We place an upper limit on the production cross section times branching fraction that is well below theoretical expectations for a b' quark decaying exclusively via FCNC for b' quark masses up to m(Z) + m(b)., Eleven pages, two postscript figures, submitted to Physical Review Letters

Abstract: We present the results of tests made on two types of uranium/liquid argon calorimeter modules, one electromagnetic and one hadronic, constructed for the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. For electrons and hadrons with energies between 10 and 150 GeV, we present measurements of energy resolution, linearity of response, electromagnetic to hadronic response ratio ( e π ), and longitudinal hadronic shower development. We have also investigated the effects of adding small amounts of methane to the liquid argon.

Abstract: A method is developed for improving decay vertex reconstruction by using kinematic fits. This is applied to generated charm meson decays. An improvement of 16% in the vertex position measurement along the flight path is achieved.

Abstract: We report on a study of color coherence effects in pp- collisions at a center of mass energy √s = 1.8 TeV. The data were collected with the DØ detector during the 1992-1993 run of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We observe the presence of initial-to-final state color interference with the spatial correlations between soft and hard jets in multijet events in the central and in forward pseudorapidity regions. The results are compared to Monte Carlo simulations with different color coherence implementations and to the predictions of script O sign(α3s) QCD calculations. © 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract: We report the results of a study of color coherence effects in pp collisions based on data collected by the DØ detector during the 1994-1995 run of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, at a center of mass energy √s = 1.8 TeV. Initial-to-final state color interference effects are observed by examining particle distribution patterns in events with a W boson and at least one jet. The data are compared to Monte Carlo simulations with different color coherence implementations and to an analytic modified-leading-logarithm perturbative calculation based on the local parton-hadron duality hypothesis. © 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: We search for inclusive high $E_T$ diphoton events with large missing transverse energy in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=1.8 TeV. Such events are expected from pair production of charginos and neutralinos within the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model with a light gravitino. No excess of events is observed. In that model, and assuming gaugino mass unification at the GUT scale, we obtain a 95% CL exclusion region in the supersymmetry parameter space and lower mass bounds of 150 GeV/c$^2$ for the lightest chargino and 75 GeV/c$^2$ for the lightest neutralino., 11 pages, 4 eps figures, To be Published in Phys.
