Abstract

In many passages of his work, Valerius Maximus mentions Italic peoples. However, his aim is not to piece together the history of the military, diplomatic, economic or cultural relationships between Rome and the Italic peoples. Hence, from the monarchic and republican history, Valerius deduces some examples to focus on individual and singular personalities or to disapprove unregulated inclinations. The story that connects Rome with the Italic peoples is a chance to shed light on the traditional values of the Roman society embodied by some of its paradigmatic individuals: the virtues that Valerius Maximus esteems are the same that Augustus and Tiberius try to preserve.

Abstract

The present paper aims at studying Valerius Maximus ’ presentation of Greek history between 490 and 362 an d it is divided into three paragraphs. The first deals with the period from the Persian to the Peloponnesian war, while the second with the ages of Spartan and Theban hegemony. The third paragraph presents the conclusions of the survey , focusing in particular on the chronological distribution of the episodes treated (1), on Valerius Maximus ’ interests (2), on his evaluations about the reported deeds and sayings (3) and on the much debated problem of his sources (4). The analysis of the considered pas sages is grouped around some thematic cores , mostly concerning characters con sidered emblematic; more rarely the attention is specifically focused on episodes that do not have a reference to single personalities. Moreover, it is evident that Valerius Maxim us chooses to present facts and protagonists not much with the aim of illustrating fundamental events in Greek history, but rather on account of their exemplarity, or rather their function of providing an example (positi ve or negative) related to the chapt er in which they are inserted. This is the reason why the same historical figure not infrequently appears under different chapters and is sometimes presented in a different light, with a favourable or unfavourable bias , depending on the context in which it is set (and, of course, on the source from which Valerius Maximus draws the exemplum ). The author, in fact, seems to produce stand - alone “ pills ” of history and his work seems to acquire sense not so mu ch in the horizon of an overall comparison be tween the Greek and Roman world , but rather in the message that each of the chapters and each of the exempla wants to communicate.

Abstract

I riferimenti alla figura di Aulo Atilio Calatino presenti nelle opere di Cicerone mostrano che l’Arpinate lo considerava il condottiero più importante della prima guerra punica e un personaggio di spicco nel panorama politico del suo tempo, tuttavia questo giudizio non trova riscontro nelle altre fonti che ci tramandano informazioni su Calatino. Il presente contributo si propone di indagare le cause e le circostanze che hanno suscitato l’interesse di Cicerone per Calatino, nonché di approfondire un possibile esempio di ridimensionamento della sua figura presente in altre fonti, ossia il caso della dittatura di Calatino del 249 a. C., primo esempio di dittatura extra Italiam nella storia di Roma., The references to Aulus Atilius Calatinus in Cicero's works show that the latter considered him the most important leader of the First Punic War and a prominent figure in the politics of his time, however this opinion is not present in the other sources relating to Calatinus. The research intends to investigate the causes and circumstances that aroused Cicero's interest in Calatinus, as well as to investigate a possible example of a downsizing of his figure visible in other sources, namely the case of Calatinus’ dictatorship in 249 BC, the first example of a dictatorship extra Italiam in the history of Rome.

Abstract

Nel contributo si prendono in considerazione alcune informazioni fornite dal Monumentum Ephesenum circa l’attività e la posizione giuridica dei pubblicani romani presenti ad Efeso e nelle altre stationes doganali asiatiche: tutto ciò, ovviamente, senza nessuna pretesa di generalizzazione. Non vi era, infatti, uniformità nei sistemi di esazione doganale nelle varie parti dell’impero. Il documento presenta soprattutto due ordini di protagonisti: infatti alcune clausole si riferiscono al cd. manceps, cioè colui che stipula il contratto di appalto per l'esazione delle imposte con i censori a Roma; molte clausole – soprattutto nel testo base – si riferiscono invece direttamente al publicanus preposto alla statio doganale e al suo procurator, i soggetti cioè che, in ciascuna stazione, marittima o terreste, della provincia d’Asia, erano preposti a tutte le complesse operazioni di esazione e comandavano la cd. familia publicanorum, cioè un gruppo di schiavi o liberi a cui erano affidate tutte le mansioni operative. Sono dunque questi ultimi i “migranti qualificati” (in questo caso da Roma alla provincia d’Asia) nella prospettiva delineata dagli organizzatori dei Seminari dell’Istituto di Storia antica dell’Università Cattolica di Milano.

Abstract

By the beginning of the fifth century Latin historiography is almost exclusively Christian. The first historical work of the century is the Chronica of Sulpicius Severus, and after this there develop two different approaches to the writing of history. The first is that of the chronicle, which goes down to Hydatius and beyond, the second, which alone can be called historiography in the strict sense, culminates in Orosius and is practically limited to Africa. The origin of both these approaches is to be found in the historical writings of Jerome, both in what he wrote and in what he planned to write, and thus it is convenient to start with him, twenty years before the fifth century. When Jerome wrote and published his Chronicon in 380, he had just returned from the cultural and intellectual climate of Rome, when Damasus was pope (366-384). Abstract

Absolute or relative vitamin D deficiency is the most frequent cause of rickets in children. Many reviews have shown that rickets may appear in association with environmental conditions, wrong dietary habits, gastrointestinal diseases and drug administration. Magnesium deficiency is also an uncommon cause of rickets. We report the case of a phenylketonuric (PKU) child with vitamin D-resistant rickets and magnesium deficiency.

Abstract

While in the last few years many basic congenital defects of trace element metabolism have been discovered, only very recently has emphasis also been placed on the possible pathologies due to trace element deficiency, secondary to the dietary restrictions of patients with inborn errors of metabolism (Lombeck et al., 1978; Acosta et al., 1981; Longhi et al., 1983). For this reason, plasma selenium (Se) levels were measured in 16 treated Phenylketonuric (PKU) children, as a part of the program of nutritional control undertaken by the V Pediatric Department of the University of Milan, in order to point out the pathologies caused by marginal or selective malnutrition in patients on a restricted diet.

International audience; Come i vicini e rivali dinasti di Bitinia, gli Attalidi di Pergamo hanno legittimato il proprio potere erigendosi a campioni della Grecità d'Asia contro i Galati. Se una storia che tenga adeguatamente conto del punto di vista dei Galati è difficilmente ricostruibile, possiamo analizzare i momenti chiave delle relazioni militari e politiche tra i Galati e gli Attalidi a partire dai tempi di Filetero e rintracciare le rare testimonianze, letterarie ed epigrafiche, indicative di un parziale superamento, a livello collettivo ed individuale, di questo antagonismo nella società del regno di Pergamo. Tra i documenti epigrafici esaminati, vi sono l'epigramma di Filetero a Delo (IG XI 4, 1105), il decreto delfico in onore di tre artisti pergameni (Syll. 3 682), una lista efebica di Pergamo (MDAI (A), 1904, p. 170, n° 14).

Abstract

In both his political action and his « propaganda » work, Sulla portrayed himself as a fundamentally « republican » leader, although his « republicanism » referred to a profoundly aristocratic Republic : his references to Romulus, Servius Tullius, Titus Lartius and the dictator Camillus, among others, should be viewed from this perspective. But his use of Roman history to justify his « conservative » and sometimes archaistic reforms also sheds light on the reality of the Roman Republic’s earliest institutions., Dans son action politique comme dans son œuvre de « propagande », Sylla se présentait comme un dirigeant fondamentalement « républicain », même si son « républicanisme » renvoyait à une République profondément aristocratique : c’est dans cette optique qu’il faut comprendre ses références à Romulus, à Servius Tullius, à Titus Larcius ou au dictateur Camille… Mais l’usage qu’il fit de l’histoire romaine pour justifier ses réformes constitutionnelles « conservatrices », parfois d’inspiration archaïsante, permet aussi de nous éclairer sur la réalité des plus anciennes institutions de la République romaine.

At the moment, a clear consensus on the extent and modalities of the procedure is lacking., Objective: To evaluate the increase in diagnostic accuracy achieved by perilesional biopsy (PL) and different RB schemes during FB performed in AS protocol., Design, Setting, and Participants: We collected prospectively the data of 112 consecutive patients with low- or very-low-risk prostate cancer; positive mpMRI underwent biopsy at a single academic institution in the context of an AS protocol., Intervention(s): mpMRI/transrectal US FB with Hitachi RVS system with 3 TB and concurrent transrectal 24-core RB., Outcome Measurements and Statistical Analysis: The diagnostic yield of the different possible biopsy schemes (TB only; TB + 4 perilesional (PL) cores; TB + 12-core RB; TB + 24-core RB) was compared by the McNemar test. Univariable and multivariable regression analyses were adopted to identify predictors of any cancer, Gleason grade group (GGG) ≥2 cancers, and the presence of GGG≥2 cancers in the larger schemes only., Results and Limitations: The detection rate of GGG ≥2 cancers increased to 30%, 39%, and 49% by adding 4 PL cores, 14, and 24 RB cores, respectively, to TB cores (all p values <0.01). On the whole, TB alone, 14-core RB, and 24-core-RB identified 38%, 47%, and 56% of all the GGG ≥2 cancers. Such figures increased to 62% by adding to TB 4 PL cores, and to 80% by adding 14 RB cores. Most of the differences were observed in PI-RADS 4 lesions., Conclusions: We found that PL biopsy increased the detection rate of GGG ≥2 cancers as compared with TB alone. However, the combination of those cores missed a large percentage of the CS cancers identified with larger RB cores, including a 20% of CS cancers diagnosed only by the combination of TB plus 24-core RB., (© 2023. Abstract

Purpose: It is still not clear the role of perilesional biopsy (PL) and the extension of the random biopsy (RB) scheme to be adopted during mpMRI-guided ultrasound fusion biopsy (FB). To evaluate the increase in diagnostic accuracy achieved by PL and different RB schemes over target biopsy (TB)., Methods: We collected prospectively 168 biopsy-naïve patients with positive mpMRI receiving FB and concurrent 24-core RB. The diagnostic yields of the different possible biopsy schemes (TB only; TB + 4 PL cores; TB + 12-core RB; TB + 24-core RB) were compared by the McNemar test. Clinically significant (CS) prostate cancer (PCA) was defined according to the definition of the PROMIS trial. Regression analyses were used to identify independent predictors of the presence of any cancer, csPCA., Results: The detection rate of CS cancers increased to 35%, 45%, and 49% by adding 4 PL cores, 12, and 24 RB cores, respectively (all p < 0.02). Notably, the largest scheme including 3 TB and 24 RB cores identified a small but statistically significant 4% increase in detection rate of CS cancer, as compared with the second largest scheme. TB alone identified only 62% of the CS cancers. Such figure increased to 72% by adding 4 PL cores, and to 91% by adding 14 RB cores., Conclusions: We found that PL biopsy increased the detection rate of CS cancers as compared with TB alone. However, the combination of those cores missed about 30% of the CS cancers identified with larger RB cores, notably including a considerable 15% of cases located contralaterally to the index tumor., (© 2023. Abstract

Introduction: Emerging evidence supports the hypothesis that metabolic syndrome is associated with cancer pathogenesis. In particular regarding prostate cancer, observational studies from various settings report different results. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to provide a quantitative estimate of the association between metabolic syndrome in prostate cancer, in particular Gleason Score >6, accounting for different study designs., Evidence Acquisition: Systematic research of available literature in English language until 2020 was conducted through in Embase, Medline, Cochrane Library and NIH Registry of Clinical Trials. For each study, information regarding the study design, the population, the definition of metabolic syndrome, data relating to prostate cancer were collected, the association between MetS and outcome of interest was determined by calculating the generic inverse variance with random effects method., Evidence Synthesis: In the final sample 19 studies were included with total of 114,329 patients, 29.4% met the criteria for metabolic syndrome. We report a significant association between metabolic syndrome and prostate cancer in cross-sectional studies (OR=1.30; 95% CI: 1.13-1.49) and for patients with clinically significant prostate cancer (OR=1.56; 95% CI: 1.23-1.99). Association between metabolic syndrome and prostate cancer combining all studies, in cohort studies and case-control studies was not significant., Conclusions: Growing evidence support the association between metabolic syndrome and prostate cancer, bias derived from observational studies might conceal further findings.
