Physical inactivity is common in young adult cancer survivors (YACS), but evidence regarding effects of physical activity (PA) interventions among YACS is limited. The IMproving Physical Activity after Cancer Treatment (IMPACT) trial evaluated a theory-based mobile PA intervention on total PA minutes/week (primary) and secondary outcomes (moderate-to-vigorous PA [MVPA], light PA, steps, sedentary behaviors) at 6 months in YACS.YACS (N = 280) were randomized to an intervention group or self-help group. All participants received digital tools (activity tracker, smart scale, access to arm-specific Facebook group) and an individual video chat session. Intervention participants also received a 6-month program with behavioral lessons, adaptive goal-setting, tailored feedback, tailored text messages, and Facebook prompts. PA was assessed via accelerometry and questionnaires at baseline and 6 months. Generalized estimating equation analyses tested between-group differences in changes over time.Of 280 YACS, 251 (90%) completed the 6-month accelerometry measures. Accelerometer-measured total PA minutes/week changed from 1974.26 at baseline to 2024.34 at 6 months in the intervention (mean change, 55.14 [95% CI, -40.91 to 151.19]) and from 1814.93 to 1877.68 in the self-help group (40.94 [95% CI, -62.14 to 144.02]; between-group p = .84). Increases in MVPA were +24.67 minutes/week (95% CI, 14.77-34.57) in the intervention versus +11.41 minutes/week in the self-help (95% CI, 1.44-21.38; between-group p = .07).Although the intervention did not result in significant differences in total PA, the increase in MVPA relative to the self-help group might be associated with important health benefits. The IMproving Physical Activity after Cancer Treatment trial compared a mobile health physical activity intervention with a self-help group on total amount of physical activity at 6 months in a nationwide sample of young adult cancer survivors. Intervention participants did not improve their total amount of physical activity, but they did increase their moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity by twice as much as the self-help participants. This increase in activity may be associated with health benefits.

In the last decade, the use of drones has proven to be the major innovation for studying various aspects of waterbird breeding biology, overcoming the environmental obstacles inherent in monitoring their breeding sites. The Squacco Heron (Ardeola ralloides) represents an example of the aforementioned difficulties, since it nests in impenetrable reed beds and nearby bushes, trees and shrubs. The present work reports the results of drone assessment of nest counting and reproductive success of the Squacco Heron in a colony in the Po Delta (NE Italy). At the beginning of the breeding season, far more nests (46) were found using drones than by eye from the nearest embankment (12). After four weeks (estimated hatching period), only ten nests were relocated by drone, due to vegetation overgrowth. All relocated nests were placed directly either within reed beds or on lower branches of shrubs, but always without higher branches obstructing the view from above. Finally, in the fledging period, no nest was relocated on drone imagery, due to further vegetation growth. Only 27 juveniles were found by drone, mostly perching on the canopy, without any evidence of nest failure, suggesting a critical underestimation. In conclusion, drone use improves accuracy of counting nesting Squacco Herons, but fails to assess productivity.

In this scientific work, we demonstrate, for the first time, a new biosensing system and procedure to measure specifically the total Tau (T-Tau) protein in serum, one of the most relevant biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). AD is a progressive brain disorder that produces neuronal and cognitive dysfunction and affects a high percentage of people worldwide. For this reason, diagnosing AD at the earliest possible stage involves improving diagnostic systems. We report on the use of interferometric bio-transducers integrated with 65 microwells forming diagnostic KITs read-out by using the Interferometric Optical Detection Method (IODM). Moreover, biofunctionalized silicon dioxide (SiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) acting as interferometric enhancers of the bio-transducers signal allow for the improvement of both the optical read-out signal and its ability to work with less-invasive biological samples such as serum instead of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). As a result, in this paper, we describe for the first time a relevant diagnostic alternative to detect Tau protein at demanding concentrations of 10 pg/mL or even better, opening the opportunity to be used for detecting other relevant AD-related biomarkers in serum, such as β-amyloid and phosphorylated Tau (P-Tau), neurofilaments, among others that can be considered relevant for AD.

Although parents with cancer report that talking with their children about cancer and dying is distressing, accessible support is rare. We assessed the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effects of Families Addressing Cancer Together (FACT), a web-based, tailored psychosocial intervention to help parents talk about their cancer with their children.This pilot study used a pre-posttest design. Eligible participants were parents with new or metastatic solid tumors who had minor (ages 3-18) children. Participants who completed baseline assessments received online access to FACT. We assessed feasibility through enrollment and retention rates and reasons for study refusal. Acceptability was evaluated by satisfaction ratings. We examined participants' selection of intervention content and preliminary effects on communication self-efficacy and other psychosocial outcomes (depression and anxiety symptoms, health-related quality of life, family functioning) at 2- and 12-week post-intervention.Of 68 parents we approached, 53 (78%) agreed to participate. Forty-six parents completed baseline assessments and received the FACT intervention. Of the 46 participants, 35 (76%) completed 2-week assessments, and 25 (54%) completed 12-week assessments. Parents reported that FACT was helpful (90%), relevant (95%), and easy to understand (100%). Parents' psychosocial outcomes did not significantly improve post-intervention, but parents endorsed less worry about talking with their child (46% vs. 37%) and reductions in the number of communication concerns (3.4 to 1.8).The FACT intervention was feasible, acceptable, and has potential to address communication concerns of parents with cancer. A randomized trial is needed to test its efficacy in improving psychological and parenting outcomes.This study was IRB-approved and registered with clinicaltrials.gov (NCT04342871).

In 2022, highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5N1) virus clade 2.3.4.4b became enzootic and caused mass mortality in Sandwich terns and other seabird species across northwestern Europe. We present data on characteristics of the spread of the virus between breeding colonies and the number of dead adult Sandwich terns recorded at breeding sites throughout northwestern Europe. Within two months after the first mortalities were reported, in total 20,531 adult Sandwich terns were found dead, which is >17% of the total northwestern European breeding population. Losses are likely higher, as we expect that many victims were not found (mortality rate might be up to 74% of the breeding population). Inside the colonies almost all chicks died. After the peak of the outbreak, in a colony established by late breeders, 25.7% of adults showed immunity against HPAI subtype H5. Removal of carcasses helped in reducing the spread of the disease and consequently total mortality. More research on the sources and modes of transmission, incubation times, effective containment and immunity is urgently needed to combat this major threat for colonial seabirds.

[...] The aim of this paper is to study the precision and theoretical biases in the age determinations of halo stars adopting both asteroseismic and classic observational constraints. [...] We adopt the well-tested SCEPtER pipeline, covering evolutionary phases up to the red giant branch (RGB). The fitting grids contain stars with mass in the range of [0.7; 1.0] $M_{\odot}$ and metallicity [Fe/H] from -2.5 to -0.5. We investigate several scenarios characterised by different adopted observational uncertainties. We also assess the impact of systematic discrepancies between the recovery grid models and target stars by computing several synthetic grids of stellar models with perturbed input physics. In our reference scenario, we recover ages for stars in the main sequence (MS) or subgiant branch (SGB) with a typical 10\%--20\% precision, while we recover those of RGB stars with a precision of about 60\%. However, adopting tighter constraints on asteroseismic parameters, the age precision in RGB improved to 20\%, while few modifications occur in the other analysed evolutionary phases. A systematic discrepancies between grid models and target stars shows that a mismatch in the mixing-length parameter value leads to significant bias in the age estimations for MS stars (about 10\%), but this bias is smaller for SGB and RGB stars. Neglecting the microscopic diffusion effect in the recovery grid leads to a typical 40\% bias in age estimates for stars on the MS. Finally, we applied the technique to stars in globular clusters. We find a precision in age estimates of around 20\% for MS stars and up to 40\% for RGB stars, greater than those obtained with classical methods. We demonstrate the method on stars of the cluster M4, obtaining a cluster age of $11.9 \pm 1.5$ Gyr and a mass at the turn-of off $0.86 \pm 0.04$ $M_{\odot}$, which are in good agreement with literature results., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. BACKGROUND: As treatments improve for colorectal cancer (CRC), interventions to improve quality of life and decrease long-term effects are needed. Physical activity (PA) is particularly important during cancer treatment because it may decrease treatment side effects, allow patients to more easily increase PA after treatment, and integrate with individuals’ motivation to make lifestyle changes after a cancer diagnosis. OBJECTIVES: This article aims to synthesize what is known about PA during CRC treatment. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted. Data were evaluated across 17 studies with a collective sample size of 1,184. Because of heterogeneity across studies, a narrative synthesis was conducted. FINDINGS: Studies included mostly college educated and married White men and women aged 50–60 years. Promising effects of PA were identified on several types of outcomes. The most common techniques to support PA included goal setting and providing instructions. The benefits of PA and how to best support PA during CRC treatment need to be better understood in future studies of racially and ethnically diverse patients with CRC.

La sedación en procedimientos endoscópicos tiene el objetivo de disminuir la ansiedad y las molestias que el paciente pueda experimentar producto del procedimiento, así como facilitar la exploración endoscópica. En México todo procedimiento de sedación deberá ser realizado y supervisado por un anestesiólogo certificado. Sin embargo la Asociación Mexicana de Endoscopia Gastrointestinal considera importante que los endoscopistas tengan conocimientos generales sobre las indicaciones, contraindicaciones y complicaciones de los procedimientos anestésicos en endoscopia, por lo que se realizó un posicionamiento al respecto.

A growing number of cases of the spread and establishment of non-native species outside their previously known ranges has been reported in recent years. Here we report new distributional records of Lepturges (Lepturges) limpidus Bates, 1872 (Cerambycidae) from Argentina and investigate whether these records could represent established populations. We constructed ellipsoid envelope models to characterize climatic niches of L. limpidus, identified areas of climatic suitability, investigated the status of new records as climatic outliers, and evaluated its dependency on its known hostplant as a limiting factor for the beetle distribution. Results indicate widespread climatic suitability in the Neotropical Region, and new records are not outliers with regard to the climatic profile of L. limpidus. Association with its known hostplant is non-dependent, indicating that the species might utilize different hosts plants. New records likely represent established populations, but targeted surveys should be carried out to detect new arrivals and enable the installation of mitigation and control measures.

Purpose Social isolation is a prominent challenge for many young adults with cancer. Despite desires for peer-to-peer connections through technology, little is known about how young adults initiate or use social media for support over time. Methods We interviewed young adults with cancer (n = 45; age 18-39, in or post cancer treatment) to explore their initiation of social media for support, changes in use over time, and types of connections sought. Results Young adults with cancer learn about online support through individual personal recommendations, advocacy organizations, or searching on Google or social media. Most were reluctant to use social media support initially because of feeling overwhelmed-from diagnoses, abundance of online information, or demands of participation-and joined when informational and emotional needs arose. Many wished they had joined earlier. Some participants use social media to make close connections while others simply want to "see" others' shared experiences or crowdsource information. Conclusion Young adults with cancer often haphazardly find online support from personal recommendations or Internet searches. Desires for social media connections are not one-size-fits-all; there are important audience segmentations for the degree and type of peer support. Implications for cancer survivors Better promotion of online social support options and benefits-early in one's cancer timeline and systematically through healthcare providers, cancer organizations, or family and friends-could improve access to helpful peer-to-peer support.

While mobile-based behavioral weight loss apps are increasing, little is known about factors associated with likelihood of viewing in-app messages. The objectives of this study were to examine, among 52 young adults participating in a microrandomized trial testing smartphone-delivered messages promoting weight management behaviors, the proportion of intervention messages viewed and behavioral predictors of message viewing. Two thirds of messages delivered were viewed. Messages were less likely to be viewed over time in the program and as participants’ total weight change in the program increased. Lapses in self-weighing and increased weight since the last weighing observation were associated with decreased probability of message viewing. Conversely, increased days of meeting dietary goals in the last 7 days were associated with increased likelihood that a message was viewed. These findings identified circumstances in which messages are less likely to be viewed and have implications for designing mobile approaches to enhance participant engagement.

The implementation of the K12 system in the Philippines has created a major shift in the Philippine educational system. The present study aimed to determine the level of learner‟s language competency on the five macro skills (i.e., Reading, Listening, Writing, Viewing, and Speaking) which will serve as a baseline data in the creation of a language module. Anchoring on both Target Situation Analysis (TSA) and Present Situation Analysis (PSA), the study was conducted among 65 grade 10 students and 3 language teachers using three research instruments including teachers‟ and students‟ questionnaires, interview, and document analysis. Triangulation was conducted to validate the results obtained from the three instruments. Based on the results of the triangulation approach, findings revealed that among the macro skills assessed in the study, three of these skills namely reading, speaking, and writing were noted to be the least mastered by the learners; thus, these skills should be given much attention in the language instruction. Implications of the present study include the necessity of providing more authentic and meaningful exercises aligned to those skills in order to address their identified difficulties.

Young adult cancer survivors experience frailty and decreased muscle mass at rates equivalent to much older noncancer populations, which indicate accelerated aging. Although frailty and low muscle mass can be identified in survivors, their implications for health-related quality of life are not well understood.Through a cross-sectional analysis of young adult cancer survivors, frailty was assessed with the Fried frailty phenotype and skeletal muscle mass in relation to functional and quality of life outcomes measured by the Medical Outcomes Survey Short-Form 36 (SF-36). z tests compared survivors with US population means, and multivariable linear regression models estimated mean SF-36 scores by frailty and muscle mass with adjustments made for comorbidities, sex, and time from treatment.Sixty survivors (median age, 21 years; range, 18-29) participated in the study. Twenty-five (42%) had low muscle mass, and 25 were either frail or prefrail. Compared with US population means, survivors reported worse health and functional impairments across SF-36 domains that were more common among survivors with (pre)frailty or low muscle mass. In multivariable linear modeling, (pre)frail survivors (vs nonfrail) exhibited lower mean scores for general health (-9.1; P = .05), physical function (-14.9; P .01), and overall physical health (-5.6; P = .02) independent of comorbid conditions.Measures of frailty and skeletal muscle mass identify subgroups of young adult cancer survivors with significantly impaired health, functional status, and quality of life independent of medical comorbidities. Identifying survivors with frailty or low muscle mass may provide opportunities for interventions to prevent functional and health declines or to reverse this process.Young adult cancer survivors age more quickly than peers without cancer, which is evidenced by a syndrome of decreased resilience known as frailty. The relationship between frailty (and one of its common components, decreased muscle mass) and quality of life among young adult cancer survivors was examined. Measuring decreased muscle mass and frailty identifies young survivors with poor quality of life, including worse general health, fatigue, physical function, and overall physical health, compared with nonfrail survivors. Interventions to address components of frailty (low muscle mass and weakness) may improve function and quality of life among young adult cancer survivors.

Cnemidochroma Schmidt, 1924, a small genus of the tribe Callichromatini endemic in South America, comprises six species of which the only one recorded in Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil is C. phyllopus (Guérin-Méneville, 1844). The aim of this study was to estimate potential suitable areas for C. phyllopus to provide further knowledge on its current distribution. A dataset of 43 records was compiled and species distribution modelling was employed linking these occurrences with bioclimatic variables. Results indicate higher suitability conditions along the Atlantic coast of Brazil, reaching north Uruguay and extending inland to Paraguay and northern parts of Argentina. In addition, we report a new distributional record from Corrientes, Argentina.
