The single-layered half-doped manganite La(0.5)Sr(1.5)MnO₄ (LSMO), was studied by means of the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and resistivity measurements. STM revealed a smooth reconstruction-free surface; the density of states, extracted from photoemission and tunneling spectroscopy, is in agreement with transport measurements. The derived from ARPES Fermi surface (FS) nesting properties correspond to the known pattern of the charge-orbital ordering (COO), which implies that FS instability is related to the propensity to form a COO state in LSMO.

We report $^{63,65}\mathrm{Cu}$ nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements on slightly underdoped $\mathrm{Nd}{\mathrm{Ba}}_{2}{\mathrm{Cu}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{6+y}$ heavily doped by Ni and Zn impurities. Owing to the impurity doping, superconductivity is fully suppressed in both cases. The Ni strongly enhances magnetic correlations and induces a wipeout of the NQR signal comparable to that found in stripe ordered lanthanum cuprates. In contrast, the magnetism is suppressed in the Zn doped sample where no wipeout effect is observed and the nuclear spin relaxation rate is reduced. Our findings are in a striking correspondence with the different impact of Ni and Zn impurities on the charge pseudogap evidenced by recent optical data, uncovering thereby a close relationship between the magnetic correlations and pseudogap phenomena.

Conduction Electron Spin Resonance (CESR) was measured on a thick slab of CaC6 in the normal and superconducting state. A surprising increase of the CESR intensity below Tc can not be explained by the theoretically predicted change in spin susceptibility. It is interpreted as a vortex enhanced increase of the effective skin depth. Non-linear microwave absorption measurements in the superconducting state describe CaC6 as an anisotropic BCS superconductor. The study of the spin dynamics in the superconducting state and the discovery of the vortex enhanced increase of the skin depth poses a challenge to theory to provide a comprehensive description of the observed phenomena. CESR data in the normal state characterize CaC6 as a three-dimensional (3D) metal. The analysis suggests that the scattering of conduction electrons is dominated by impurities and supports the description of superconductivity in the dirty limit., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures
