Mineral-hosted melt inclusions have become an important source of information on magmatic processes. As the number of melt inclusion studies increases, so does the need to establish recommended practice guidelines for collecting and reporting melt inclusion data. These guidelines are intended to ensure certain quality criteria are met and to achieve consistency among published melt inclusion data in order to maximize their utility in the future. Indeed, with the improvement of analytical techniques, new processes affecting melt inclusions are identified. It is thus critical to be able to reprocess any previously published data, such that reporting the raw data is one of the first “recommended practices” for authors and a publication-criteria that reviewers should be sensitive to. Our guidelines start with melt inclusion selection, which is a critical first step, and then continue on to melt inclusion preparation and analysis, covering the entire field of methods applicable to melt inclusions. Dedication In March of 2000, a melt inclusion workshop was held at the Chateau de Sassenage in Grenoble and a companion issue of Chemical Geology entitled “Melt Inclusions at the Millennium” was published. Erik Hauri was heavily involved with the meeting and contributed two landmark papers to the topical issue of Chemical Geology on the use of secondary ion mass spectrometry to analyze volatiles in melt inclusions. When the melt inclusion community re-convened at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in August of 2018, we were saddened that Erik was unable to join us due to his failing health. Less than a month later came the devastating news of his passing at only 52 years of age. In recognition of his incredible contributions to science in general and to the in situ analysis of melt inclusions in particular, the participants and organizers of the WHOI melt inclusion workshop dedicate this collegial paper to Erik Hauri, our colleague, mentor and friend. Thank you Erik.

Reliability in the assessment of radiographic abnormalities in the sacro-iliac joint was investigated by rheumatologists and radiologists experienced in the reading of such films. This study differs from previous ones in that films were masked to reduce cueing from the radiographic appearance of other pelvic bone and joint structures. Agreement was greatest (greater than or equal to 80%) when only the presence or absence of abnormality was considered. When corrected for chance, agreement on the individual radiographic abnormalities was frequently poor or modest. The use of reference radiographs reduced absolute disagreement and had a modest influence on absolute agreement. The scoring of films for epidemiologic purposes should preferably be delegated to senior radiologists using standard reference films. Nevertheless, there remains a considerable margin of error in the interpretation of sacroiliac joint radiographs which is of clinical and epidemiological importance considering the weight that radiographs of this joint carry in diagnostic rheumatology.

An efficient algorithm for computing the coefficients of polynomial curves by least squares is presented on the basis of a High Speed Matrix Generator (HSMG) which transfers the independent terms of the coefficient matrix to their appropriate positions within that matrix. The independent terms computed for a given degree polynomial are used to evaluate all lower degree curves without a significant increase in program execution time. The dimensionally invariant regression methods we outline are generalized techniques that can be applied also to polynomial surface approximations and four-dimensional trend analysis.

In 1962, Nordsieck presented a series of numerical methods for solving ordinary differential equations which rely on Taylor's series, but which are equivalent to the correctors in the Adams methods. In a method of Nordsieck, simplifications, such as in the often desirable process of changing step size, are made, since it is unnecessary to store more than one previous step. In 1964, Gragg and Stetter published a series of numerical methods for solving ordinary differential equations which rely on very accurate correctors, using a “nonstep” point within the interval of integration. The method in the present paper is equivalent, for uniform step size, to one of these very accurate correctors but is in the form of Nordsieck. The strengths and weaknesses of the method are discussed.

In a previous paper the authors suggested that the accurate correctors proposed by Gragg and Stetter for solving ordinary differential equations should be accompanied by similar predictors. In each method in that paper the corrector and one of the predictors use one “nonstop” point within the interval of integration. In the present paper a corrector is dealt with in which two “nonstep” points are used, and in which, to some degree, the authors have “balanced” the contributions of the errors in the predictors to the total local truncation error, a technique due to Butcher.

In April, 1964, Gragg and Stetter published a set of numerical methods for solving y′ = f ( x , y ) which rely on some very accurate correctors, using a “nonstep” point within the interval of integration. However, the present authors found that this accuracy is largely lost unless one also uses accurate predictors, also using a “nonstep” point within an interval of integration, of the same order of accuracy as that of the correctors. Numerical examples indicate that on the average those differential equations tested can be solved by the method of the sixth order proposed in this paper in about two-thirds the time required by an Adams method of the same order.

F'or the coinvenience of the reader, there is inicluded in Table 3 a compilation of 25D values of the tangent and cotangent for arguiieiits 1?(1?)89?. These data, which are required in computing the values of c, are here tabulated with the samne range and precision as for the values of siine and cosine given by G. W. and R. M. Spenceley [4]. The only comparable table of decimal approximations to the tangent appears to be the relatively inaccessible 30D table of Herrin-anti [5].

Computed tomography is very sensitive in detecting enlarged retroperitoneal lymph nodes. Several structures such as vessels, bowel loops, fibrous tissue and hemorrhage can simulate pathologic retroperitoneal nodal enlargement. A thorough awareness of the normal retroperitoneal anatomy will help in correct interpretations and may obviate the need for more invasive diagnostic procedures.

Upper abdominal ultrasonography demonstrated important incidental findings in 4.4% of 480 patients referred specifically for a gallbladder examination. The sonographic findings contributed dramatically to the subsequent management of these patients. A policy of examining all of the upper abdominal organs is advocated in all patients referred for sonography of a single organ or system.
