Clinical studies have demonstrated increased serum levels of E-selectin, P-selectin and VCAM-1 in patients with squamous cell carcinomas, which correlate with expression in the primary tumour. For this reason, selectin expression may also support the diagnosis and be of prognostic value in squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN).Using immunohistochemistry, the expressions of E- and P-selectin and VCAM-1 in SCCHN were characterised and analysed.The expressions of E-selectin and VCAM-1 were increased. The magnitude of expression was unrelated to the location or size of the primary tumour. With increasing de-differentiation, the expression of E-selectin increased, whereas the number of cells expressing VCAM-1 was highly variable. In contrast, E-selectin and VCAM-1 expressions decreased with progressive metastatic disease.These data demonstrate that the expression patterns of E-selectin and VCAM-1 may depend on differentiation and lymphogenic metastatic disease in SCCHN, and suggest that these molecules may have a dual role, depending on the stage of tumour development. These findings support the hypothesis that expression of E-selectin and VCAM-1 may be initiated by the release of tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) at an early stage of tumour development. In contrast, the decrease in selectin expression, observed as the metastatic disease progresses, may serve as a protective mechanism to prevent an influx of effector cells.

The rock-specimens collected during the Antarctic Expedition of 1839-43 were deposited in the British Museum. A few years ago, in the course of a re-arrangement and registration of the rock-specimens n the Museum, this collection amongst others was examined, and microscopic sections of some of the specimens were prepared. Nothing, however, was published at that time, since it was found that the greater part of the collection had been practically duplicated by the rocks of the Challenger Expedition, which had a year or two previously been deposited in the Museum, and it was felt that mere petrographical descriptions of specimens have but little to recommend them in the absence of geological data as to the mode of occurrence and mutual relations of the rocks in the field.

Small portion (B.M. 1921, 274) of the Vaalbult meteoric iron, weighing about 184 grams, was kindly placed at the disposal of the writer for examination by the late Dr. L. Peringuey, Director of the South African Museum, Cape Town. According to information received from him, this meteorite is known as the 'Vaalbult' siderite, and was presented to the South Afican Museum on April 22, 1918, by Mr. S. Grove, Member of the Provincial Council of the Cape for the Prieska Division, who obtained it from Mr. Japie Greeff, the owner of the farm on which it was found, probably early in the same year. The original mass weighed about 26 lb. and was very deeply and broadly pitted. In external appearance it is somewhat similar to the large (1,210 lb.) Ratteldraai iron from the Kenhardt Division, more than 60 miles distant, found in 1909. A cast of the iron sent by Dr. Peringuey shows that it is of very irregular shape.

In a recent number of this Magazine (1897, XI. p. 192) a paper by me on "The Crystallography of Plagionite" gives the results of goniometric measurements and specific gravity determinations made on crystals of plagionite from Wolfsberg in the Harz; it was also suggested on crystallographic grounds that the mineral from Arnsberg in Westphalia described by Pisani as heteromorphite was identical with plagionite: but as no quantitative chemical analyses were made on the material measured, these results were not altogether satisfactory.

A Brief notice of this new mineral, which was found associated with Lewisite in the cinnabar-bearing sands of Tripuhy, near Ouro Preto, Minas Geraes, Brazil, has already been given by tile authors in Min. Mag. Vol. XI. No. 50, p. 85. Since that time a sufficient amount of material (1½ grms.) has been separated from the sand to permit a more detailed investigation of its crystallographic and chemical characters.

Early in the year 1918 Mr. Atehur Russell picked up at the old antimony-lead mine at Glendilming in Eskdale, Dumfriesshire, Ipecimens of the antimony-lead ore Jound there, in which were small cavities lined with a drusy layer of mimlte crystals; these, being markedly deeper in eolour than the stibnite forming part of some of the specimens, belonged to a different species, and probably a sulphantimonite of lead. Mr. Russell blought some of the specimens to the Museum, and some of the small crystals were examined with the view of determining the species to which they belong.

Sphærostilbite was one of a number of sub-species which Beudant in his Mineralogy, published in 1832, separated from ordinary stilblte owing to slight differences in chemical composition. In a typical specimen from the Faroe Islands he describes the sphmrosfilbite as innplanted upon ordinary stilhite, in the form of small globules, presenting a fibrous radiated structure and brilliant pearly lustre on the fractured surface. Unlike stilhite, it gelatinlsed with acids, and it also had a specific gravity (2.31) slightly higher than that of stilhite. According to the analyses given by Beudant, however, it differed in chemical composition so little from ordinary stilbite that in later text-books (Glocker, 1839; Breithaupt, 1847, &c.) it has always been referred to that species.

During the year 1919 specimens of some of the meteorites preserved in the Public Museum of King Willlam's Town, South Africa, were kindly placed by the Curator, the late Yr. F. A. O. Pyre, at the disposal of the writer for investigation. One of these specimens was a meteoric iron labelled Mount Ayliff, another a mass of oxidized material labelled Western Cape Province, and a third a small piece of iron labelled ‘found on Elandsburg at an altitude of 6,000 ft. in 1888’ Unfortunately Mr. Pyre was not in a position to supply very much more information about the specimens.

Few minerals have had a more varied career than the cubic sulpharsenite of copper--the binnite of Des Cloizeaux--which as small brilliant crystals is of rare occurrence in the white saccharoidal dolomite of the Binnenthal in Switzerland.

In a previous paper attention was drawn to the close similarity in mineral and chemical composition of chondritic meteoric stones. In the case of about forty chondrites it was shown that, apart from variations in the amount of nickel-iron, not only are the constituent minerals present in very similar amounts, but their chemical compositions vary to no very great extent. In that paper sufficient importance was not attached to the variations in the amount of nickel-iron.

On November 14th, 1892, Prof. J. A. Krenner read before the Hungarian Academy of Sciences an account of a new silver ore from Felsöbánya, to which he gave the name of Andofite. It was described as orthorhombie with a : b : c = 0.97756 : 1 : 0.86995, and as having the chemical composition 2PbS.Ag2S.3Sb2S3.

In 1869 the late Dr. Sadebeek gave a brief description of a collection of rocks, accompanied by a map and profiles, made by Dr. W. Sehimper in the neighbourhood of Adowa and Axum, Abyssinia.In the British Museum is a very similar collection, which was purchased from Dr. Schimper about the same time. As some of these rocks showed points of resemblance to the riebeckite-trachytes of Senafé, recently described by the author, a somewhat more detaBed petrographical examination of the specimens than Dr. Sadebeck was able to afford them appeared to promise something of interest.

The Amana meteorite, known also as Iowa County, Homestead, and West Liberty, is fully described in O. C. Farrington's 'Catalogue of the Meteorites of North America'. After the appearance of a brilliant meteor which on the night of February 12, 1875, passed with loud detonations from S.W. to N.E. over northern Missouri and southern Iowa, about 100 meteoric stones, weighing altogether some 500 lb., were found scattered over an elliptic area of about eighteen square miles from Amana in Amahs township to Boltonville in Iowa township, both in Iowa Co., Iowa.

In this paper are embodied the results of an examination of the specimens of lead slags from Laurium in the British Museum. On some of the specimens a new mineral, paralaurionite, was found, which possesses the same chemical composition as laurionite, but entirely different morphological and optical characters.In addition to crystals of the four minerals given in the title, a few crystals oi matloekite and anglesite were noticed, and on one specimen there is a radiating group of prismatic crystals of penfieldite.

The discovery of the meteoric stone near Lake Brown, County Avon, South-West Division, Western Australia, was recorded by Dr. Edward S. Simpson in the Annual Progress Report of the Geological Survey of Western Australia for 1921 (1922, p. 53). The following details concerning the meteorite are taken from that report and from a letter of September 25, 1925, sent by Dr. Simpson with the specimen, weighing 174 grams, which was presented to the British Museum collection by Mr. A. Gibb Maitland, at that time Government Geologist of Western Australia.

The name of Monehiquite, first applied by Rosenbusch and Hunter (Tscherm. Min. Mitth. XI. 1890, p. 445) to a peculiar group of dyke rocks tound in association with elæolite syenite in Brazil, is rapidly becoming familial" to petrologists through the discovery of similar rocks from various other localities.The Brazilian Monehiquites were described by Rosenbusch as black to grayish-black rocks, consisting of porphyritic ohvine and pyroxene, with widely varyiug amounts of hornblende and mica, in a glassy base usually crowded with hornblende microliths.

Early in 1905 a small fragment of a meteoric iron from Uwet in Southern Nigeria was received at the Imperial Institute from Mr. John Parldnson, the Principal of the Mineral Survey then proceeding in Southern Nigeria. The fragment was part of a large mass which was held in great veneration by the natives of Uwet (lat. 5° 17' p N., long. 8° 15' p E.), a town on the Calabar river, about 23 miles north by west of Calabar. Later, further particulars of the meteorite were communicated to the Imperial Institute by Mr. E. D. Simpson.

The specimen which is the subject of the present note is a magnificent piece of Proustite from Chañarcilio, Chili, which has been recently acquired for the British Museum. It is a mass of lustrous crystals, measuring about 3 inches by 2½ inches, and nearly 3 inches in height.The specimen has a peculiar cockscomb appearance, due partly to the habit of the crystals and partly to the way in which they are grouped ; the lower part consists of Proustite, interpenetrated by a little minutely crystalline white Calcite, which on one side of the specimen extends partly over the crystals in the form of darker coloured acute rhombohedra.

The Little Island of Trinidad, as it is called to distinguish it from the larger island in the West Indies, is situated in the South Atlantic Ocean, about 700 miles off the coast of Brazil, in lat. 20°31' S. and long. 29°19' W.According to Ross, who in 1839 effeeted a landing on tile N.W. coast, the island is a mass of volcanic matter, the rocks of which it is composed assuming the most extraordinary shapes. The most remarkable of these are the Sugar Loaf Hill on the southern and the Nine-Pin Rock on the north-western coast.

The mineral strüverite occurs as a rare accessory constituent of the pegmatite which is found in large detrital masses in the neighbourhood of Craveggia (Val Vigezzo, northern Piedmont), namely on the Piano dei Lavonchi and in other localities on the eastern slope of the mountain across which runs the road from Vasca to the Alp Marco. In this pegmatite Professor G. Spezia in 1882 noted the occurrence of beryl, and two years later Professor G. Strüver that of columbite, a mineral which had not hitherto been found in the Alps. Still later, notices of other rare minerals from the pegmatiie were published by Professor A. Piccini and Professor A. Cossa.

In a previous paper (Min. Mag. XI. 1895, p. 80), the result was given of an analysis of the new mineral, Zirkelite, which was discovered by Dr. Hussak in association with baddeleyite in the decomposing magnetite-pyroxenite of Jaeupiranga, S. Paulo, Brazil.In that analysis only a small amount of material (less than a quarter of a grin.) was used, and no very serious attempt was made to separate small percentages of rare earths in the main zirconia precipitate.

Analyses of Indian manganese-ores generally show the presence of small amounts of arsenic. The form in which this constituent occurs was discovered by Dr. L. Leigh Fermor in the course of his investigations of these well-known deposits. At two different localities crystalline arsenates were found. One of these occurrences is at the Sitapar deposit in the Chhindwara district, Central Provinces. The pinkish-white to white arsenate found there is the new mineral to which we have given the name fermorite. The other locality at which an arsenate was found is Kajlidongri, Jhabua State, Central India. The pale-green arsenate, somewhat resembling apatite in appearance, which occurs at this locality has been found by us to be identical with the tilasite from Sweden described by Sjögren.

Through the kindness of Mr. F. W. FitzSimons, Director of the Port Elizabeth Museum, South Africa, pieces of this iron were placed at the disposal of the writer for examination and analysis. The original mass, weighing about 203 lb. (92 kg.), was found at Karee Kloof, about nine miles from Hofmeyer, Cape Province, South Africa, and was presented to the Port Elizabeth Musem by Mr. N. H. Ogilvie in 1914. From a cast which was made under the direction of Miss M. Wilman, Director of the McGregor Memorial Musemn, Kimberley, the dimensions of the mass are approximately 43 × 30 × 20 cm. It is very irregularly shaped, is pitted with ‘thumb-marks’, and is cavernous with depressions, one of which on the side shown in Pl. III, fig. 1, has dimensions of about 20 × 15 × 7½ cm.

The validity of Haüy's great law of the rationality of intercepts — better known as the law of rational indices—or its equivalent, the law of homogeneity of arrangement of the ultimate particles in a crystalline structure, has as yet never been seriously called into question : nevertheless, in the crystals of the telluride of gold, calaverite, we find characters which are to all appearance at variance with this law. As far as the author is aware and can ascertain, no difficulty of a precisely similar kind has ever been encountered before. Certain substances do, indeed, display the so-called optical anomalies; but these are, as was first established by Mallard, in reality in strict accordance with the actual crystalline arrangement.

This new antimonate was found in the cinnabar mine of Tripuhy, near Ouro Preto, Minas Geracs, Brazil.The occurrence of cinnabar at this locality has been known since 1810, and a short notice of it is given by Eschwogo in his Pluto Brasilensis, p. 456, which was published in 1883.

In the classification proposed by the author in a previous paper meteorites are divided into five groups according to the ratio of iron to nickel in the nickeliferous iron they contain. In the case of the meteoric irons such a classification, as shown by Farrington's list of analyses, is a natural one, since the structure of the irons, as revealed by etching, varies with the amount of nickel they contain. Thus Group 1, in which the metal is poor ill nickel, with a ratio of Fe to Ni of 13 upwards, includes nickel-poor ataxites, hexahedrites, and Coarsest and coarse octahedrites ; Group 2, in which Fe : Ni =8-13, the rest of the octahedrites from medium to finest ; Group 8, in which Fe : Ni = 5-8, nickel-rich ataxites; Group 4, in which Fe: Ni = 2-5, ataxites still richer in nickel; while Group 5 may include the doubtful Oktibbeha meteorite in which the ratio of iron to nickel is even less than one.

In the Rose-Tschermak-Brezina classification of meteorites the intermediate class of stony-irons, in which iron and stony matter occur in approximately equal amounts and to which Maskelyne gave the name siderolites, is divided into (1) siderolites proper, including the groups of the pallasites and the siderophyres, and (2) lithosiderites, comprising the groups of tile mesosiderites, glahamites, and ]odranites. Mesosiderites are defined as consisting of iron and crystalline olivine and bronzite, and grahamites of the same constituents with the addition of plagioclasefelspar.

A British Museum official may perhaps be pardoned if, in a review of the progress of mineralogy since the first appearance of the Geological Magazine, he begins with a reference to scientific work done in the Museum with which the Editor was so long associated. At the time when the Magazine first saw the light the Keeper of the Mineral Department was the late Professor Nevil Story-Maskelyne. He was one of the first to grasp that efficient tool for deciphering mineral aggregates which had been provided by Nicol and Sorby in the thin-section. He was engaged in the particular work to which Keepers of that Department have since appeared to consider they must in duty bound devote much of their time and energy, viz. the investigation of meteorites, and, assisted by the microscopic examination of thin slices of these bodies, he was soon able to announce the discovery in them of several new species, one of which, the sulphide of calcium, oldhamite, must have been formed under conditions very different from those which prevail on the earth's surface.

The observation of the striking similarity both in chemical and mineral composition of the Baroti, Wittekrantz, and St. Michel meteorites (see the preceding paper) suggested the idea of testing how far such a close relationship applied to other cbondritic meteoric stones.The practical identity in chemical composition of different meteoric stones has been often pointed out. For example, A. E. Nordenskiöld showed in the case of the stones of Erxleben, Lixna, Blansko, Ohaba, Pillistfer, Dundrum, Hessle, Orvinio, and Stäilldalen that the percentage chemical compositions differed very slightly if the proportions of the metals, silicon, &c., were considered instead of the oxides.

Mode of Occurrence.—This new mineral was discovered at Gangapitiya, near Ambakotte and about 12 miles east of Kandy, Ceylon. In this locality quarries have been dug for the well-known Ceylon moonstone, which occurs in large porphyritic crystals in an acid granulite.Bands of this granulite, which is composed mainly of quartz and felspar in finely granulitic and occasionally graphic structure, alternate with bands of limestone up to 18 inches wide. Between limestone and granulite occur contact-zones consisting, next to the limestone, almost entirely of a coiourless diopside, but near the granulite of a mixture of diopside with other minerals, viz. blue spinel, a little apatite, occasionally scapolite or plagioclase, and the blue mineral which is the subject of the present note.

Florencite was first discovered as a rare constituent of the cinnabar-bearing sands of Tripuhy, near Ouro Preto, Minas Geraes, Brazil. Here it occurred in well-developed crystals (up to ½ cm. in, length), in association with monazite, xenotime and the titano-anti. monates (lewisite and derbylite) previously described. Blowpipe experiments made hy Dr. W. Florence showed that the mineral was a phosphate of the cerium earths, while angular measurements of the crystals and observations of the optical characters suggested its close relationship with hamlinite, the new hydrated phosphate of aluminium, barium and strontium, recently described by Hidden and Penfield.

The object of this note is not to give elaborate descriptions of rocksections, but to call attention to tile fact that the old volcano of Nimrud, situated on the west side of lake Van in Armenia, was the centre of eruption of alkali-lavas presenting striking similarities to some of the alkali-rocks of the tlift Valley in East Africa.To Dr. Felix Oswald, in his book on the geology of Armenia, we owe a detailed description of this ancient volcano, of which the vast crater, now half occupied by a deep lake, is more than five miles across. An interesting series of the lavas from the volcano was collected by Dr. Oswald and was presented by him to the British Museum. On looking over thin slices of these rocks under the microscope, I was at once struck by the surprising resemblance of some of them, with their phenocrysts of anorthoclase and scattered tufts of aegirine and the soda-amphiboles, riebeckite and cossyrite, to rocks in Prof. J. W. Gregory's collection from the Rift Valley which I had described.

The first broad grouping of meteorites was into irons and stones according as they consisted mainly of nickeliferous iron or of silicates. These were the two main divisions of the first really serviceable classification as applied by Gustav Rose in 1862-4 to the collection of meteorites in the, University Museum of Berlin. In this classification the division of meteoric irons included as separate groups the pallasites and the mesosiderites, in which nickel-iron "rod silicates are present in about equal amounts; and the meteo~fic stones were for the first time split up into chondrites, or stones containing those curious rounded grains (chondrules) peculiar to meteorites, and non-Chondritic stones, which were divided according to mineralogical composition into the groups of eucrites, howardites, &c., still largely recognized.

The molecular volumes of the members of an isomorphous group of minerals in general show an approach to equality. In other words, minerals having an analogous chemical composition show not only closely related crystalline forms, but have also approximately equal molecular volumes. Many years ago J. D. Dana endeavoured to show that a simple relationship as regards molecular volume also subsisted in the case of various minerals which were closely related crystallographically, although unlike chemically. He concluded that in these cases the similarity in form depended solely on the relationship in molecular volume, and had nothing whatever to do with the chemical composition.

In mineralogical literature there appears to be a tendency to overestimate the degree of exactness attainable in the chemical analysis of minerals. When it is considered how impossible in the majority of eases it is to obtain absolutely pure material for analysis, and how imperfect even in these days are some of the methods of chemical separation employed, for the determination of a formula any great reliance in the figures to the right of the decimal point in the percentages obtained is scarcely justified in the case of analyses made on small amounts (less than half a gram) of material.

The mineral schwartzembergito was first described by Domeyko in 1864 as an oxychloroiodide of lead from the Desert of Atacama. The specimens, which are said to have been collected about ten leagues from Paposo in the Desert of Atacama, at a mine worked for argentiferous galena, were brought to his notice by Dr. Schwartzemberg, an assayer at Copiapo, who had recognized the material as being an iodide of lead. Domeyko made a chemical analysis (see p. 82) of the mineral, a yellowish crust, 1 to 2 mm. in thickness, upon galena, and obtained the formula, 2Pb(CI,I)2.3PbO, the specific gravity being 5.7; no crystal measurements were obtainable, neither were any optical observations made.

The occurrence in Bolivia of minerals containing the rare element germanium has been recently noted by Prof. S. L. Penfield. One of these minerals from Potosi, described bv him in 1893, has the chemical composition of the Freiberg argyrodite (the original source of germanium), but was determined to be cubic, and not monosymmetrie, the system to which argyrodite was originally referred. To the supposed new mineral the name eanfieldite was given, but when Weisbach's reexamination showed that the Freiberg argyrodite was possibly ctlbie, the name was transferred by Penfield to another mineral containing germanium, which he described in 1894.

In a paper in Zts. f. Kryst. IX. 186, Professor Laspeyres states that the yellow enerustation uponFelsSbanya stibnite is not ecrvantite, but a sulphide of zinc, which he determines to be wurtzite, chiefly on the optical ground that a black interference cross was observed between crossed nicols, for the chemical proof based on the solubility in cold concentrated hydrochloric acid can hardly be regarded as very conclusive, considering the fact that he had no true wurtzite with which to make the comparison, but only so-called schalenblende, spiauterite, etc. On this account it seemed desirable to test the solubility of wurtzite in HCl, and accordingly a series of experiments as to the comparative solubility of wurtzite, spiauterite, voltzite and different varieties of blende was made by treating small fragments with cold concentrated HCl, (as was done by Professor Laspeyres) in small tubes, in the mouth of which strips of lead acetate paper were inserted.

In 1912 Mr. N. B. Kinnear, Curator of the Bombay Natural History Society's Museum, brought to me at the British Museum, for identification, a specimen of a supposed meteorite which had been sent to the Bombay Natural History Society by the late General W. Osborn.General Osborn stated that, in November, 1910, on arrival at his usual winter quarters in the hill station of Kotheir in the Punjab, he visited his friend, the Rajah of Bilaspur, who presented him with a fragment, weighing about a quarter of a pound, of a meteorite which had fallen in daylight at the village of Baroti, in the Bilaspur (Simla) district, one day during the month of September, 1910.

The mineral kilbrickenite was analysed, described and named by Dr. James Apjohn in 1840. The specimens which he examined were sent to him by Mr. P. M. Taylor, who conducted the mining operations at the Kilbricken mine in County Clare, where the mineral was discovered. Apjohn's analysis showed the presence of lead, antimony and sulphur in proportions corresponding fairly closely with tbe formula 6PbS.Sb2S3. It was only in the preceding year that L. F. Svanberg had described a new mineral, geocronite, to which he assigned the formula 5PbS.(Sb, As)2S3. The announcement of this new mineral appears to have escaped Apjohn's notice, since geocronite is not included in the list of sulphantimonites of lead with which he concludes his paper.

Very little is known of the crystalline form of thc somewhat rare mineral stannite, since in the few localities in which it has been found it usually occurs only in the massive state. Several suggestions, summarised below, have been made as to the type of crystalline symmetry of the mineral, but hitherto no crystals have been completely examined.(1)Orthorhombic. Haüy (1822), from an examination of cleavage fragments from Cornwall, concluded that the primitive form might possibly be a right rhombic prism.(2)Cubic. Haidinger (1825) mentioned Cornish crystals, having apparently the form of regular cubes, but the dulness of the faces did not allow of any measurements. The massive material appeared to show cleavages in the directions of the faces of the cube and rhombie dodecahedron. (Crystals of Cornish stannite are further mentioned on p. 65 below.)

According to the accounts which have been published by members of the Egyptian Geological Survey, a number of meteoric stones fell to earth on June 28, 1911, at about 9 in the morning, in the hamlets to the west and north of the village of El Nakhla El Baharia (31° 19′ N., 30° 21′ E.) in the district of Abu Hommos, about twenty-four miles east of Alexandria, Egypt.

For many years past Mr. R. H. Solly has been accustomed to spend each succeeding summer in the quest of mineral specimens in the neighbourhood of the village of Binn, Switzerland, particularly of those occurring in the white crystalline dolomite of the Lengenbach quarry, and his patient energy has been rewarded by the discovery, not only of material which has thrown fresh light on previously known minerals, but also of specimens which on examination proved to represent species new to science. Especially important was the discovery in 1903 of small, and often minute, blood-red crystals which differed both in colour and in streak from realgar, a common mineral in the quarry.

In the appendix to the paper on the new mineral, baddeleyite, in the last number of the Magazine, Mr. Fletcher proves the identity of that mineral with the brazilite of Husssk, and explains the deviation in specific gravity and the original incorrect determination of the chemical composition of the Brazilian mineral by the supposition that the crystallographic measurements were made on the true mineral, while the specific gravity determination and chemical analysis were made on another, a tantalo-niobate of yttrium associated with it.

The specimen which is the subject of the present note consists of a group of large rude, reddish crystals of tetrahedral aspect, which in colour, lustre, and general appearance, resemble garnet; they were formerly supposed to be garnet pseudomorphous after some tetrahedral mineral, and the original mineral was presumed to have been fablerz, on account of the size of the crystals, which measure as much as 3 to 5 centimetres across.

Augelite was one of several aluminium phosphates from the iron mine of Westanå, Skåne, Sweden, described by C. W. Blomstrancl in 1868 (Öfv. Ak. Förh. Stockh. XXV. 1868, p. 199). He states it to be a massive mineral with distinct cleavages in three directions, and names it augelite (avγη lustre) on account of the strong pearly lustre on the cleavage ṡurfaces. He determines its specific gravity as 2.77, and, as the result of his analyses, represents its chemical composition by the formula, 2Al2O3. P2O5. 3H2O. Since this paper of Blomstrand, as far as we are aware, no further reference to augelite has been made, and, since hitherto distinct crystals of the mineral have not bhen found, its position as a definite species seems to have been regarded as somewhat doubtful, for we find that Dana, in the last edition of the System of Mineralogy, includes it in a rather unsatisfactory group of more or less doubtful species appended to evansite.
