Abstract

$^{111}\mathrm{Ag}$ and $^{113}\mathrm{Ag}$ were produced in induced fission reaction, where yrast and near-yrast states were populated. To interpret the new data the Interacting Boson-Fermion Model was used. A good agreement with the experimental data is achieved, suggesting that the two Ag nuclei have a well-developed collectivity, superimposed on $\ensuremath{\pi}{g}_{9/2}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$ excitations previously observed throughout the entire isotopic chain.

Abstract

The high-spin states in Nd-141 were investigated using the Zr-96(Ca-48, 3n) reaction and the EU-ROBALL array. The level scheme has been extended up to an excitation energy of around 16MeV and spin 81/2. Two new bands of dipole transitions and three bands presumably of quadrupole transitions were identified and their connections to low-lying states were established. Cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky and tilted axis cranking calculations are combined in the interpretation of the observed dipole bands. The high-spin bands with assigned quadrupole transitions are interpreted as triaxial bands, while the dipole bands appear in the calculations to exhibit a shape evolution from low-deformation triaxial to spherical shape. They can be classified as magnetic rotation, with transition probabilities that show the characteristic decrease with angular momentum caused by the shears mechanism.

Abstract

Matière Nucléaire; International audience; The gamma decay of the nuclei 124,125Ba has been investigated with the EUROBALL array, using the reaction 64Ni+64 Ni at E_{beam} = 255 and 261 MeV. Six new E1 transitions have been found in the nucleus 125Ba, suggesting a significant role of octupole correlations in the origin of its parity doublets. The pi = 3-level of the nucleus 124Ba has been identified for the first time. Its excitation energy is in very good agreement with a prediction based on a microscopic model including octupole interactions.

Abstract

High-spin states in Lu-165 were populated in the La-139(Si-30, 4n) reaction at a beam energy of 152 MeV and gamma-ray coincidences were measured with the EUROBALL spectrometer array. Nine new rotational bands were discovered, known band structures were considerably extended and many inter-band transitions were found. Structures with normal deformation coexist with bands associated with the strongly deformed triaxial energy minima found in calculations. Three of these triaxial bands form a family of wobbling excitations with phonon quanta n(w) = 0, 1 and 2. The wobbling mode is a unique signature of nuclear triaxiality. Configuration assignments are discussed for the observed band structures. An exchange of configuration between two of the new bands due to mixing is observed, resulting in different signature partnerships at low and high spins. (Less)

Abstract

High-spin states of the nucleus 163Lu have been populated through the fusion-evaporation reaction 139La(29Si, 5n) with a beam energy of 157 MeV. In addition to the two lowest excited triaxial strongly deformed (TSD) bands, recently interpreted as one- and two-phonon wobbling excitations, a third excited TSD band has been firmly established decaying to the yrast TSD band. The assignment of this band as a three-quasiparticle band shows together with the normal deformed (ND) level scheme the presence not only of shape coexistence between ND and TSD structures, but also an interplay of wobbling and quasiparticle excitations in the triaxial strongly deformed potential well of 163Lu.

Abstract

We report on four recent results concerning the population and the decay of superdeformed states, namely the structure of excited superdeformed states in 194Hg, the search for fine structure of the last superdeformed transitions in 194Pb, the primary decay-out strength analysis in 194Hg and, as a consequence of this, the possibility of using the decay-out as a tool to study order-to-chaos properties of normally deformed states.

Abstract

High-spin states in 161Lu and 162Lu have been investigated using the GASP γ-ray spectrometer array. Excited states in these nuclei have been populated through the 100Mo(65Cu, xn) reaction at a beam energy of 260 MeV. Four presumably triaxial superdeformed bands, three in 162Lu and one in 161Lu, have been observed. This is the first evidence for triaxial superdeformation in the two isotopes.

Abstract

Wobbling is a rotational mode unique to a triaxial body. The Lu-Hf isotopes with N similar to 94 at high spin provide a possible region of nuclei with pronounced triaxiality. We have investigated Lu-163 through the fusion-evaporation reaction La-139(Si-29,5n)Lu-163 with a beam energy of 152 MeV. Three excited bands decaying into the known, presumably triaxial, superdeformed (TSD) band built on the i(13/2) proton orbital are observed. The electromagnetic properties of the connecting transitions from the two strongest populated excited TSD bands have been investigated. New particle-rotor calculations in which one i(13/2) quasiproton is coupled to the core of triaxial shape produce a variety of bands, whose properties can clearly be interpreted either as "wobbling" or "cranking" motion of the core. Evidence for the assignment of the excited TSD bands as one, and possibly even two wobbling phonon modes built on the yrast TSD band in Lu-163 is given. These triaxial bands coexist with bands built on quasiparticle excitations in the normal deformed (ND) minimum for which new data are also presented. (Less)

Abstract

Lifetimes of states in the yrast superdeformed bands of 163Lu and 164Lu were determined in a Doppler-shift attenuation-method experiment. From fractional Doppler shifts and line shapes, average transition quadrupole moments, Q t = 8.2-0.6 +1.0 b and 7.1-0.6 +0.5 b, were deduced for one of the bands in 163Lu and 164Lu, respectively. These values are much larger than the quadrupole moment of the normal-deformed yrast band in 163Yb, Q t = 4.9-0.4 +1.3 b, that was also determined in this experiment. Comparison to cranking calculations indicates that both superdeformed bands correspond to a local potential energy minimum with a pronounced triaxiality, γ∼ 20°.

Abstract

New positive-parity states, having a bandlike structure, were observed in $^{105}\mathrm{Ru}$. The nucleus was produced in an induced fission reaction, and the prompt $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-rays, emitted from the fragments, were detected by the EUROBALL III multidetector array. The partial scheme of excited $^{105}\mathrm{Ru}$ levels is analyzed within the triaxial-rotor-plus-particle approach.

Abstract

Rotational bands based on the deformation driving 7rTi1312 intruder configuration have been observed in several even-N Lu isotopes [l-3] and in odd-odd 164Lu where the i13/2 proton is coupled to different neutron orbitals [4]. The quadrupole moment is only measured in 163Lu (Qt = lib) [l], however, the dynamical moments of inertia are very similar in all these bands, and larger than those of the bands built on the normal deformed (ND) structures. For nuclei with N-94 and Z-71-72, calculations predict stable triaxial shapes with large quadrupole deformation (E:, N 0.38 and y N f20”) for all symmetry groups of parity and signature [2,5]. Abstract

The neutron-rich nuclei 109Pd and 111Pd were produced as fission fragments following the 30Si+168Er reaction at 142 MeV. Using the identification based on the coincidences with the complementary fission fragments, the only positive-parity bands observed so far in 109Pd and 111Pd emerged from this work. A band, built on top of the 5/2+ ground state exhibiting ΔI=1 energy-level staggering, was observed in each of these nuclei. Both nuclei of interest, 109Pd and 111Pd, are suggested to lie in the transitional region of Pd isotopes of maximum γ softness. The ground states of both nuclei are predicted by total Routhian surface calculations to be extremely γ soft with shallow triaxial minima. The first crossing in the new bands is proposed to be attributable to an alignment of h11/22 neutrons.

Abstract

Average transition quadrupole moments in the yrast triaxial superdeformed bands of 163Lu, 164Lu and 165Lu were determined in a Doppler-shift attenuation-method experiment. Fractional Doppler shifts were determined in γ-ray coincidence spectra measured with the Gammasphere array. The transition quadrupole moments derived from these data show a decrease from 163Lu to 165Lu which is not predicted by total-energy surface calculations.

Abstract

The location of nuclear closed shells, as evidenced through discontinuities in binding energy and one- and two-particle separation energy systematics, remains one of the simplest tests of global nuclear models. How shell gaps evolve, whether with increasing mass, increasing neutron:proton ratio or increasing deformation, is still uncertain, and it has recently been suggested that one must go beyond a static meanfield picture to include the effects of dynamic fluctuations in the nuclear shape even in the ground state. The identification of key properties which may distinguish between competing approaches is thus vital. Comparison of the binding energies of superdeformed nuclei in the A ≈ 190 region shows that two-proton separation energies are higher in the superdeformed state than in the normal state, despite the probably lower Coulomb barrier and lower total binding energy. Possible reasons for this difference are discussed. This somewhat counterintuitive result provides a critical test for global nuclear models.

Abstract

A measurement of the energy and spin of superdeformed states in {sup 190}Hg, obtained through the observation of transitions directly linking superdeformed and normal states, expands the number of isotopes in which binding energies at superdeformation are known. Comparison with neighboring nuclei shows that two-proton separation energies are higher in the superdeformed state than in the normal state, despite the lower Coulomb barrier and lower total binding energy. This unexpected result provides a critical test for nuclear models.

Abstract

Excited states in $^{98,100,102}\mathrm{Mo}$ have been studied via the $^{30}\mathrm{Si}+^{168}\mathrm{Er}$-induced fission reaction at a beam energy of 142 MeV. Prompt \ensuremath{\gamma} rays were detected with the EUROBALL III multidetector array. The level schemes are extended with more than 20 new transitions and interpreted in the framework of a soft-octupole vibration model.

Abstract

High-spin states in $^{161}\mathrm{Lu}$ were populated in the $^{139}\mathrm{La}$($^{28}\mathrm{Si}$, $6n$) reaction and \ensuremath{\gamma}-ray coincidences were measured with the EUROBALL spectrometer. On the basis of these data, the previously known level scheme is extended with new band structures and is partly revised. Configuration assignments are made to all bands based on comparison of experimental properties with cranked shell model calculations. A strongly populated band with parity and signature $(\ensuremath{\pi},\ensuremath{\alpha})=(+,\ensuremath{-}1/2)$ is found to be yrast above spin $I\ensuremath{\simeq}33$. This band shows characteristics resembling those of two triaxial superdeformed bands in this nucleus based on the occupation of the shape-driving ${i}_{13/2}$ proton orbital. This structure, unique to $^{161}\mathrm{Lu}$ within the chain of even-$N$ Lu isotopes, is discussed in terms of a quasiparticle configuration in a local triaxial minimum with a larger triaxiality and a smaller quadrupole deformation than calculated for the ${i}_{13/2}$ proton excitation.

Abstract

The level structure of Nd-140(60)80 has been established up to spin 48 by in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy by use of the Zr-96(Ca-48, 4n) reaction. High-fold gamma-ray coincidences were measured with the EUROBALL spectrometer. Twelve new rotational bands have been discovered at high spins. They are interpreted as being formed in a deep triaxial minimum at epsilon(2) approximate to 0.25 and gamma approximate to 35(degrees). Possible configurations are assigned to the observed bands on the basis of configuration-dependent cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations.

Abstract

The excitation energy of the lowest-energy superdeformed band in Pb-196 is established using the techniques of time-correlated gamma-ray spectroscopy. Together with previous measurements on Pb-192 and Pb-194, this result allows superdeformed excitation energies, binding energies, and two-proton and two-neutron separation energies to be studied systematically, providing stringent tests for current nuclear models. The results are examined for evidence of a "superdeformed shell gap."

Abstract

High-spin states in $^{161}Lu were investigated using the EUROBALL spectrometer. A previously known triaxial superdeformed band has been extended to higher spins and a new band with similar characteristics has been discovered. Comparison to systematically occurring wobbling bands in Lu isotopes strongly suggests that these two bands represent the $n_{\omega}$ = 0 and 1 wobbling excitations in ${161}Lu.

Abstract

Matière Nucléaire; International audience; Lifetimes have been measured for states in the yrast (band 1) and an excited superdeformed band (band 2) in Pb-196. The excited band is thought to be built on an octupole vibration, rather than a quasiparticle excitation. Centroid shifts and line shapes of transitions in gamma-ray coincidence spectra measured with the EUROBALL spectrometer have been analyzed. The transition quadrupole moments deduced from these data for the yrast and the excited superdeformed band are identical within the experimental uncertainties. This result shows that the excited band is not built on different deformation-driving orbitals compared to band 1. It is compatible with the previous suggestion of an octupole-vibrational excitation for the signature partner bands 2 and 3.

Abstract

The even-even nucleus 136Nd was studied via in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy using the 16O + 125Te reaction at 100 MeV and the EUROBALL array. One new dipole band was observed. Together with a previously identified dipole band, whose position in the level scheme is revised, the new band forms a doublet structure similar to the recently observed chiral bands in the odd-odd neighboring nuclei. This would be the first case of a chiral doublet in an even-even nucleus.

Abstract

The wobbling mode is a direct consequence of rotational motion of a triaxial body. The wobbling degree of freedom introduces sequences of bands with increasing number of wobbling quanta and a characteristic ΔI=1 decay pattern between the bands in competition with the in-band decay. A favorable candidate for establishing this exotic excitation mode is found for the first time in one of the Lu-isotopes for which stable triaxial superdeformed shapes are expected.

Abstract

The nucleus 163Lu has been populated through the reaction 139La(29Si,5n) with a beam energy of 157 MeV. Three triaxial, strongly deformed (TSD) bands have been observed with very similar rotational properties. The first excited TSD band has earlier been assigned as a one-phonon wobbling excitation built on the lowest-lying (yrast) TSD band. The large B(E2)(out)/B(E2)(in) value obtainable for one of four observed transitions between the second and first excited TSD bands is in good agreement with particle-rotor calculations for a two-phonon wobbling excitation.

Abstract

The neutron-rich nuclei 109 Pd and 111Pd were produced as fission fragments following the 30Si + 168Er reaction at a beam energy of 142 MeV. Using the identification based on the coincidences with the complementary fission fragments, the ground state bands in 109Pd and 111Pd were found. They are the only positive-parity bands observed so far in 109Pd and 111 Pd. A band, built on top of the 5/2+ ground state exhibiting ΔI = 1 energy-level staggering was observed in each of these nuclei. Both nuclei of interest, 109Pd and 111 Pd, are suggested to lie in the transitional region of Pd isotopes of maximum γ-softness. The ground states of both nuclei are predicted by TRS calculations to be extremely γ-soft with shallow triaxial minima. The first crossing in the new bands is proposed to be due to an alignment of h211/2 neutrons.

Abstract

High-spin states in Lu-165 have been investigated by in-beam gamma-ray coincidence spectroscopy using the EUROBALL spectrometer array. Two new excited rotational bands have been discovered with features similar to a previously known triaxial superdeformed band in that nucleus. Comparison of the decay pattern of these bands, in particular the unusually large E2 transition strength from the first excited to the yrast superdeformed band, to theoretical calculations shows that they belong to a family of wobbling excitations with phonon numbers n(w) = 0, 1 and 2. These results, together with evidence for nuclear wobbling in the neighbouring isotopes Lu-163 and Lu-167, firmly establish this mode of excitation in the A = 165 mass region. Abstract

Conversion electrons from electromagnetic transitions preceding the fission of the 3.7 ns 240f Pu shape isomer have been measured. The electron spectrum shows a broad structure of individually resolved lines with energies between 620 and 650 keV, which are interpreted as the (Jβ→Jg) E0 transitions from the decay of the lowest β-vibrational band with a phonon energy of 770 keV feeding to the ground state band of 240f Pu . In a combined analysis of e− and high resolution γ-ray spectroscopy data previously established octupole bands could also be studied in more detail.

Abstract

High-spin states in 196 Pb have been populated in two different heavy-ion-induced reactions using thin and Au-backed targets, respectively. Gamma-ray coincidences were measured using the EUROBALL spectrometer array. Five new magnetic-rotational bands have been found. The previously known four bands have been extended and some of their levels have been reordered. With one exception, all the bands have been connected to lower-lying states and excitation energies, spins and parities have been determined. From the systematic properties of the bands and from comparison to tilted-axis cranking calculations, arguments for configuration assignments to the bands are derived. It is suggested that the bands are based on proton 11 − and 8 + particle states coupled to various neutron–hole excitations.

Abstract

Evidence for a low-lying octupole vibrational excitation in the superdeformed energy minimum of 196 Pb is presented. High-spin states in this nucleus have been populated in the 170 Er( 30 Si, 4n) 196 Pb reaction. The in-beam γ -ray decay has been investigated using the EUROBALL IV Ge-detector array. The linear polarization of γ -ray transitions connecting an excited superdeformed band with the yrast superdeformed band has been measured from which E1 multipolarity is determined. These E1 transitions, which compete with the highly collective in-band E2 transitions, are strongly enhanced. This is an important step towards establishing that low-lying octupole vibrations are a wide spread phenomenon in the A =190 region of superdeformation.

Abstract

The atomic nucleus 74Kr has been investigated using combined conversion-electron (CE) and γ-ray spectroscopy. In order to confirm the existence of the expected low-lying isomeric 0+2 state, the possibility of an electric-monopole (E0) decay to the ground state was examined. The observation of an E0 transition at 508 keV allowed the determination of the mixing between coexisting prolate and oblate shapes.

Abstract

We report the identification of six new superdeformed (SD) bands in 197,198Pb observed with the EUROBALL IV spectrometer. The results are interpreted in the framework of cranked Hartree-Fock calculations with approximate projection on the particle number by means of the Lipkin-Nogami method. A mixing between quasi-particle excitations and an octupole vibration is suggested in the two SD isotopes. We have estimated the ordering of the neutron valence orbitals and confirm indirectly a N = 118 SD gap.

A detailed spectroscopic study of high‐spin states in 196Pb has been carried out using the EUROBALL spectrometer array. Five new magnetic‐rotational bands have been found and the previously known bands have been extended. With one exception, all the bands have been connected to lower‐lying states and excitation energies, spins and parities have been determined. Doppler‐broadend lineshapes have been analyzed and lifetimes of states in four of the bands have been determined. The B(M1) values show the decrease with increasing spin that is expected for shears bands. Configurations of proton‐particle excitations coupled to neutron‐hole states have been assigned to the bands.

Abstract

A measurement of the energy and spin of superdeformed states in 190Hg, obtained through the observation of transitions directly linking superdeformed and normal states, expands the number of isotopes in which binding energies at superdeformation are known. Comparison with neighboring nuclei shows that two-proton separation energies are higher in the superdeformed state than in the normal state, despite the lower Coulomb barrier and lower total binding energy. This unexpected result provides a critical test for nuclear models.

Abstract

The nucleus (163)Lu has been populated through the fusion-evaporation reaction (139)La((29)Si,5n)(163)Lu with a beam energy of 152 MeV. The electromagnetic properties of several connecting transitions between two presumably triaxial, strongly deformed (TSD) bands have been studied. Evidence is presented for the assignment of the excited TSD band as a wobbling mode built on the yrast TSD band, based on comparisons to new calculations in which an aligned particle is coupled to a strongly deformed triaxial rotor. The wobbling mode is uniquely related to triaxiality in nuclei.
