1. FIRST DETECTION OF WEST NILE VIRUS ANTIBODIES IN ANIMALS IN LIBYA

Abstract

Intro: West Nile virus (WNV) is a global important mosquito-borne flavivirus causing West Nile disease (WND) with morbidity and mortality in humans and animals. It is endemic in many North African countries, however, in Libya, WND was reported in humans by serology but never been reported in animals. Methods: A total of 578 and 63 serum samples from horses and dogs, respectively, were collected from healthy unvaccinated animals between 2016 - 2019. A commercially available competitive ELISA (c-ELISA) kit was initially used to test samples. Positive and doubtful sera for anti‐WNV IgG antibodies using the c-ELISA were confirmed and also screened for WNV and Usutu virus (USUV) antibodies using virus neutralization test (VNT). Findings: The results of anti‐WNV antibodies using c-ELISA showed that 13.1% (76 out of 578) of horses samples and 30.1% (19 out of 63) of dogs samples were positive. A confirmation of ELISA equine and canine positive and doubtful samples using VNT was done. VNT showed that 68.4% (52 out of 76) of serum horses samples were positive and had an overall titration from 1:10 to 1:80. Among the ELISA dogs positive and doubtful samples, VNT showed that 78.9% (15 out of 19) were positive and had an overall titration from 1:10 to 1:80. Discussion: There is lack of information from many African countries and the real burden of WNV infections in Africa is not well known, however, strong evidence on the circulation of WNV in the continent. Horse remains the most relevant species to monitor the circulation of WNV but seroprevalence studies carried out on different animals reported WNV infection in different African countries, however, their role in the transmission cycle is not well understood. Only few countries have reported WNV from dogs in Africa with very scarce information from North Africa. Conclusion: Future research on WND is urgently needed in Libya.

Abstract

Purpose: West Nile virus (WNV) is an arthropod-borne zoonotic pathogen which represents a continuous source of concern for public health worldwide due to its expansion and invasion into new regions. Its distribution and circulation intensity in African countries is only partially known. The aim of the present study is to provide an updated overview on the current knowledge of WNV epidemiology in Africa, providing available data on incidence in humans and animals, the circulating lineages and clades, other than an updated list of the principal arthropod vectors identified and the availability of vector competence studies. Methods & Materials: We searched pertinent articles to be included in the Scoping Review according to PRISMA and QUORUM criteria. We searched PubMed and Google Scholar electronic databases on January 21, 2020, using selected keywords. From the references of each article, we explored further references as appropriate. Additional references have been later identified and added accordingly to expert opinion. Results: This review, based on the analysis of 150 scientific papers published between 1940 and 2020, highlights: (i) the co-circulation of WNV-lineages 1,2, and 8 in the African continent; (ii) the circulation of Koutango virus in Senegal, Gabon, Somalia, and Niger (iii) the presence of diverse WNV competent vectors in Africa, mainly belonging to the Culex genus; (iv) the lack of vector competence studies for several other mosquito species found naturally infected with WNV in Africa; (v) evidence of circulation of WNV among humans, animals and vectors in at least 28 Countries; and (vi) the lack of knowledge on the epidemiological situation of WNV for 19 Countries. Conclusion: This study provides the state of art on WNV investigation carried out in Africa, highlighting several knowledge gaps regarding i) the partial knowledge on the current WNV distribution and genetic diversity, ii) its ecology and transmission chains including the role of different arthropods and vertebrate species as competent reservoirs, and iii) the real disease burden for humans and animals, therefore highlighting the needs for further research and surveillance studies to be addressed with high priority in this Continent.This study was partially funded by EU grant 874850 MOOD.

Abstract

LiteBIRD is a JAXA-led Strategic Large-Class mission designed to search for the existence of the primordial gravitational waves produced during the inflationary phase of the Universe, through the measurements of their imprint onto the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). These measurements, requiring unprecedented sensitivity, will be performed over the full sky, at large angular scales, and over 15 frequency bands from 34 GHz to 448 GHz. The LiteBIRD instruments consist of three telescopes, namely the Low-, Medium- and High-Frequency Telescope (respectively LFT, MFT and HFT). We present in this paper an overview of the design of the Medium-Frequency Telescope (89–224 GHz) and the High-Frequency Telescope (166–448 GHz), the so-called MHFT, under European responsibility, which are two cryogenic refractive telescopes cooled down to 5 K. They include a continuous rotating half-wave plate as the first optical element, two high-density polyethylene (HDPE) lenses and more than three thousand transition-edge sensor (TES) detectors cooled to 100 mK. We provide an overview of the concept design and the remaining specific challenges that we have to face in order to achieve the scientific goals of LiteBIRD.

Abstract

There is emerging evidence that radiomics analyses can improve detection of skeletal fragility. In this cross-sectional study, we evaluated radiomics features (RFs) on computed tomography (CT) images of the lumbar spine in subjects with or without fragility vertebral fractures (VFs).Two-hundred-forty consecutive individuals (mean age 60.4 ± 15.4, 130 males) were evaluated by radiomics analyses on opportunistic lumbar spine CT. VFs were diagnosed in 58 subjects by morphometric approach on CT or XR-ray spine (D4-L4) images. DXA measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) was performed on 17 subjects with VFs.Twenty RFs were used to develop the machine learning model reaching 0.839 and 0.789 of AUROC in the train and test datasets, respectively. After correction for age, VFs were significantly associated with RFs obtained from non-fractured vertebrae indicating altered trabecular microarchitecture, such as low-gray level zone emphasis (LGLZE) [odds ratio (OR) 1.675, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.215-2.310], gray level non-uniformity (GLN) (OR 1.403, 95% CI 1.023-1.924) and neighboring gray-tone difference matrix (NGTDM) contrast (OR 0.692, 95% CI 0.493-0.971). Noteworthy, no significant differences in LGLZE (p = 0.94), GLN (p = 0.40) and NGDTM contrast (p = 0.54) were found between fractured subjects with BMD T score - 2.5 SD and those in whom VFs developed in absence of densitometric diagnosis of osteoporosis.Artificial intelligence-based analyses on spine CT images identified RFs associated with fragility VFs. Future studies are needed to test the predictive value of RFs on opportunistic CT scans in identifying subjects with primary and secondary osteoporosis at high risk of fracture.

Abstract

West Nile virus (WNV) is a vector-borne virus maintained in nature by a bird-mosquito cycle. However, it can occasionally and accidentally infect horses and human beings, leading to sometimes severe or even fatal outcomes in these species. Therefore, the monitoring of its circulation and disease occurrence is of relevance. Unfortunately, it is underdiagnosed or not diagnosed in several African counties, including Namibia, where no data is currently available for horses. In this study, 98 horses in three different stables in the Windhoek city area were investigated. They were found to have a seroprevalence of approximately 7%. Positive reactions were seen at all three stables, suggesting a greater than expected prevalence of the virus. This is the first report of serological evidence for the presence of the virus in horses in Nambia. Even though clinical signs were not reported in any of the stables from which the sera were derived, the seroprevalence to the virus suggests that horses with high genetic and/or economic value could benefit from vaccination against WNV. Because of the zoonotic potential of the virus, these findings are also of significance to human health authorities.

Abstract

et al., Feedhorn- and orthomode transducer- (OMT) coupled transition edge sensor (TES) bolometers have been designed and micro-fabricated to meet the optical specifications of the LiteBIRD high frequency telescope (HFT) focal plane. We discuss the design and optical characterization of two LiteBIRD HFT detector types: dual-polarization, dual-frequency-band pixels with 195/280 GHz and 235/337 GHz band centers. Results show well-matched passbands between orthogonal polarization channels and frequency centers within 3% of the design values. The optical efficiency of each frequency channel is conservatively reported to be within the range 0.64−0.72, determined from the response to a cryogenic, temperature-controlled thermal source. These values are in good agreement with expectations and either exceed or are within 10% of the values used in the LiteBIRD sensitivity forecast. Lastly, we report a measurement of loss in Nb/SiNx/Nb microstrip at 100 mK and over the frequency range 200–350 GHz, which is comparable to values previously reported in the literature., This work is supported by NASA under grant no. 80NSSC18K0132.

9. Neutralising antibodies to West Nile virus detected in horses in Windhoek, Namibia

Abstract

West Nile virus (WNV) is a vector-borne virus maintained in nature by a bird-mosquito cycle. However, it can occasionally and accidentally infect horses and human beings, leading to sometimes severe or even fatal outcomes in these species. Therefore, the monitoring of its circulation and disease occurrence is of relevance. Unfortunately, it is underdiagnosed or not diagnosed in several African counties, including Namibia, where no data is currently available for horses. In this study, 98 horses in three different stables in the Windhoek city area were investigated. They were found to have a seroprevalence of approximately 7%. Positive reactions were seen at all three stables, suggesting a greater than expected prevalence of the virus. This is the first report of serological evidence for the presence of the virus in horses in Nambia. Even though clinical signs were not reported in any of the stables from which the sera were derived, the seroprevalence to the virus suggests that horses with high genetic and/or economic value could benefit from vaccination against WNV. Because of the zoonotic potential of the virus, these findings are also of significance to human health authorities.

Abstract

Background Distinguish between radiation necrosis (RN) and tumor progression, in patients with irradiated primary or metastatic brain tumors, is a diagnostic challenge. Also the use of new MRI sequences, like diffusion, perfusion-weighted and spectroscopy, or PET with new amino acid tracers, is not always able to differentiate these two entities.To overcome this crucial problem, encouraging results have been obtained using the analysis of delayed contrast extravasation MRI to calculate high resolution maps, called “treatment response assessment maps” (TRAMs). Aim of this exploratory analysis is to assess TRAM ability in differentiate between radiation effect and tumor progression in a small cohort of brain tumor patients treated with radiation therapy (RT). Material and Methods Thirty-four patients irradiated for primary and metastatic brain tumors were evaluated. 12 patients have primary brain tumors, 22 patients have brain metastases from different solid tumors. Distinguish by histological subtypes and type of treatment, the 12 patients with primary brain tumors were: 8 glioblastoma, 2 anaplastic astrocitoma, 1 pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma WHO grade II, and 1 anaplastic xanthoastrocytoma WHO grade III, treated with surgery followed by RT and concomitant and\or adjuvant chemotherapy with temozolomide. Among brain metastatic patients, primary tumor was: 18 non-small cell lung cancer, 2 malignant melanoma, 1 breast cancer and 1 renal cell carcinoma. All of them were treated with stereotactic radiosurgery at the dose of 20-24Gy in 1fraction, or with hypofractionated stereotactic radiotherapy at the dose of 27-30Gy in 3fractions. All images were uploaded and elaborate into the image workstation ([Brainlab AG, Olof-Palme-Straße 9, 81829 Munich]). TRAMs were calculated by subtracting T1 MRI images acquired 5 minutes after contrast injection from the T1 MRI images acquired 60-105 minutes later. On TRAMs, radiation effects appeared as red areas whereas persistent tumoral lesion appeared as blue areas. Results From February 2021, 34 patients have been evaluated, in a prospective study, with this novel MRI modality. During their follow-up, 13patients (38%) showed a clinicoradiologic suspicion of a persistent tumoral lesion or progressive disease, and 21 (62%) a suspicion of RN. For 14patients a brain MET-PET has been performed. TRAMs analysis have shown a fair agreement with clinicoradiologic diagnosis, perfusion-weighted MRI, and PET imaging. Moreover, 7 patients underwent surgical resection, with histopathological confirm of persistent disease in 4 and radionecrosis in 3. Conclusion These preliminary results show the ability of TRAMs evaluation in distinguish between RN and progressive disease. The recruitment of new patients continues, and further evaluations are ongoing to evaluate sensitivity and positive predictive value of TRAMs analysis.

Abstract

H. Sugai, et al., Recent developments of transition-edge sensors (TESs), based on extensive experience in ground-based experiments, have been making the sensor techniques mature enough for their application on future satellite cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization experiments. LiteBIRD is in the most advanced phase among such future satellites, targeting its launch in Japanese Fiscal Year 2027 (2027FY) with JAXA’s H3 rocket. It will accommodate more than 4000 TESs in focal planes of reflective low-frequency and refractive medium-and-high-frequency telescopes in order to detect a signature imprinted on the CMB by the primordial gravitational waves predicted in cosmic inflation. The total wide frequency coverage between 34 and 448 GHz enables us to extract such weak spiral polarization patterns through the precise subtraction of our Galaxy’s foreground emission by using spectral differences among CMB and foreground signals. Telescopes are cooled down to 5 K for suppressing thermal noise and contain polarization modulators with transmissive half-wave plates at individual apertures for separating sky polarization signals from artificial polarization and for mitigating from instrumental 1/f noise. Passive cooling by using V-grooves supports active cooling with mechanical coolers as well as adiabatic demagnetization refrigerators. Sky observations from the second Sun–Earth Lagrangian point, L2, are planned for 3 years. An international collaboration between Japan, the USA, Canada, and Europe is sharing various roles. 13. Foliar application of potassium-based fertilizer improves strawberry fruit quality

Abstract

Among the different mineral nutrients, potassium (K) is recognized as the macronutrient that most strongly affects the quality parameters of crops. An adequate K nutrition is in fact associated with increased fruit size, enhanced nutraceutical properties (e.g., content of sugar, organic acids, antioxidants), improved color and increased shelf life for many agricultural products. Previous studies have shown that, in controlled conditions, the foliar application of K-based fertilizers during the fruit development period could improve fruit quality; however, it is not clear whether such positive results can also be obtained in field-cultivated plants. For these reasons, the aim of the present study was to assess if the repeated applications of K-based fertilizers during the production period (mid-June to late August) might affect the quality parameters of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa 'Murano') fruits. Frigoplants, transplanted in April, were cultivated in grow bags on cocopeat (8 plants per linear meter) and treated foliarly spraying K(2)SO(4) (6 g L(-1)) either once or twice a week. Control plants were sprayed with distilled water. As expected, foliar K-fertilization increased the K concentration by 8-11% in fruits and by 7-5% in leaves according to the frequency of application (once and twice a week, respectively). In addition, strawberry fruits exhibited an enhanced total soluble solids content (approximately 12%) and sweetness index (approximately 13%). Conversely, other nutraceutical compounds (e.g., phenolics, flavonoids and flavonols) as well as the fruit yield were not affected by K treatments, regardless the fertilization levels. In conclusion, results here presented show that at the field scale the foliar K-fertilization during the development of strawberries can enhance the quality and the nutraceutical value of fruits.

Abstract

Most FIR and sub-mm space borne observatories use polymer-based quasi-optical elements like filters and lenses, due to their high transparency and low absorption in such wavelength ranges. Nevertheless, data from those missions have proven that thermal imbalances in the instrument (not caused by filters) can complicate the data analysis. Consequently, for future, higher precision instrumentation, further investigation is required on any thermal imbalances embedded in such polymer-based filters. Particularly, in this paper the heating of polymers when operating at cryogenic temperature in space will be studied. Such phenomenon is an important aspect of their functioning since the transient emission of unwanted thermal radiation may affect the scientific measurements. To assess this effect, a computer model was developed for polypropylene based filters and PTFE-based coatings. Specifically, a theoretical model of their thermal properties was created and used into a multi-physics simulation that accounts for conductive and radiative heating effects of large optical elements, the geometry of which was suggested by the large format array instruments designed for future space missions. It was found that in the simulated conditions, the filters temperature was characterized by a time-dependent behaviour, modulated by a small scale fluctuation. Moreover, it was noticed that thermalization was reached only when a low power input was present.

BACKGROUND: Flower induction and the reproductive and vegetative behavior of strawberry plants depend on several agronomic and nutritional factors. OBJECTIVE: During propagation in the nursery, several fertigation techniques (nutrient amount and timing), rooting times and pot sizes were used to modify plant architecture. METHODS: Different levels of nutrient applications were tested by setting the fertigation composition at 700 or 1000Scm −1 electrical conductivity. Fertigation was continuous, delayed or temporary during the summer growth of Elsanta and Capri runner plants, for tray and mini-tray plant production. Early and late rooting dates were also compared. RESULTS: The experiments showed the effects of the container type (tray and mini-tray) and the nutritional level on the plant architecture and reproductive behavior, with a major control of plant growth. Rooting time and fertigation timing also had some effects on plant architecture. CONCLUSIONS: Propagation and fertigation techniques can become effective strategies for manipulating the architecture and the reproductive behavior of the plant. However, the interaction between many growing factors and plant growth may reduce the predictability of the effects.

In particular, we focus on an innovative strategy to cover the plane of observation with a minimal propellant consumption. Results of some numerical simulations, carried out for a three-booms configuration, are provided.

The research was aimed to describe the shoot growth, flower differentiation and flower bud positioning (architecture) of raspberry (primocane fruiting - ‘Erika’, ‘Dolomia’, ‘Lagorai’, ‘L03’ and floricane fruiting - ‘Tulameen’, ‘Violet’), blackberry (floricane fruiting - ‘Chester’, ‘Loch Ness’, ‘Tupi’) and currant (white, ‘Viktoria’, and red, ‘Junifer’, ‘Rovada’) during the growing season. One-year-old plants were planted and grown in Vigolo Vattaro (TN - northern Italy), 725 m a.s.l.; 46°0’0”N; 11°12’0”E. In the primocane fruiting raspberry cultivars, the flowers differentiated quickly in July while in the floricane fruiting cultivars the buds became reproductive in October. Notably, ‘Lagorai’ had an intermediate behaviour with a few buds differentiating in July and a high number in October. Blackberry cultivars ‘Chester’ and ‘Tupi’ showed a typical floricane behaviour, whereas ‘Loch Ness’ exhibited an intermediate differentiation type similar to the raspberry ‘Lagorai’. In currant, the flower differentiation started slowly, between June and July, reaching a maximum in September in cultivars ‘Viktoria’ and ‘Rovada’, while it began one month later in ‘Junifer’. The most interesting difference was related to the type of fruiting shoots: brachyblast, short or medium shoots showed high flower differentiation while long shoots differentiated flower buds in a very different way according to the cultivar.

Abstract

Our study was carried out in bench rhizotrons using the Camarosa variety of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.), by exciding the apex of fast-growing primary roots at two distances (1 or 8 cm) from the apex. It was demonstrated that new lateral meristems were rapidly induced by excision of the root apex at either distance; after 24 h, histone H4 in situ hybridisation detected groups of cell-organising root primordia just a few millimetres below the cut. After a further 24 h, new lateral roots were about to protrude from the original root. Results show that lateral roots can be formed anywhere along the primary roots of strawberry plants from a few stem cells distributed along the pericycle close to the protoxylem arches.

Abstract

Strawberry plugs are quickly replacing traditional bare-root transplants in Ireland. This is particularly the case for soilless culture in glasshouse and polythene tunnel production. The aim of this experiment was to study the effect of runner size, date of runner harvest and two peat types on subsequent fruit yield characteristics from the 'tray plants' grown. Runner tips were harvested from 'super elite' strawberry mother plants cv. 'Elsanta' and planted into peat modules and grown in a non-heated glasshouse. Runner tips were harvested on the 5 th and the 19 of July 2005. On both dates they were graded into small, medium and large sizes. These were rooted in one type of propagation tray and two different types of peat substrate. The final strawberry crown diameter ranged from 14.3 to 15.69 mm at harvest. The root score ranged from 3.55 to 4.36 out of a total score of five. There was no significant difference between the total yields recorded in either season one or two for any of the treatments. The lowest and highest average yield recorded over the two seasons was 11.33 and 12.73 kg per m 2 respectively. The average fruit weight was higher from plants propagated from large runners and when grown in the finer peat substrate. However, when large runners were used later in the season, the average fruit weight is lower. Strawberry crown dissection showed the regular pattern of flower formation throughout the growing season. The stage of flower development was closer for the three runner grades that were harvested later.

Under forward bias SiC p-i-n diodes exhibit an anomaly enhancement of the partial dislocation mobility. Through first-principle calculations, we have shown that Peierls barriers and electrical activities are strongly dependent on the dislocation core structures. Further we have found that solitons or antiphase defects along the dislocation line cannot explain alone the enhancement of the dislocation velocity. We have proposed a new theoretical model that can explain the enhancement of the dislocation mobility under forward bias. This model can be applied to any semiconductor materials in order to predict the behaviour under electron-hole plasma injections

Abstract

We present a novel interpretation of defected tubes based on a dislocation model. A scroll (a sheet rolled without closure) is considered as an axial edge dislocation in a multiwall nanotube (MWNT). Screw dislocation type defects separate scroll from nested-tubes within the same nanotube. The glide of the screw dislocation causes the transformation between these two forms. In some cases, the mechanism of formation of an MWNT could, therefore, start with the formation of a scroll which, by gliding of a screw dislocation, is transformed into the more stable MWNT We compare the structure and energetics of prismatic screw and edge dislocations in graphite and carbon nanotubes. We present calculations for the Peierls barrier of the first kind for graphite and we discuss this result for glide motion of screw dislocations in nanotubes. There is no evidence for stable sp3 atoms in any of the studied nanostructures.

Abstract

We report calculations in support of the application of LDA within DFT to graphite and go on to report the inner core structure and energetics of prismatic dislocations with Burgers vector c/2: two types of edge and one of screw type. We find the screw dislocations preserve sp2 hybridisation and graphite bonding, whereas one edge type (zigzag) gives rise to interlayer single bonds and sp3 hybridisation, while the other type (armchair) does not, preferring instead to rehybridise towards sp and form bonds with itself approaching triple character. For computational and physical reasons these calculations were based on AA graphite, rather than Bernal (AB) graphite. © 2007 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA.

Abstract

First-principle calculations have shown that both the partials can be electrically active. In particular we have shown the Ga(g) core partials are a good candidate for the observed absorption peak at 2.4 eV revealed by energy loss spectroscopy measurements. The symmetric and asymmetric reconstructions have relatively close formation energies. Our results have suggested that the asymmetric reconstructions, characterized by strong bonds along the dislocation line are favourable in intrinsic materials. However, in strongly p and n-type materials or in high stress field the symmetric reconstructions can become energetically more stable. These reconstructions are always electrically active with a deep band across the forbidden gap.

Abstract

SiC p-i-n diodes exhibit an increase in the voltage drop under forward bias which has been linked with the increased mobility of the partial dislocations. Through first-principles calculations I have investigated the Shockley partials in 4H-SiC. I have found that the asymmetric reconstructions do not posses midgap states, while the symmetric reconstructions are always electrically active with a half-filled band. The kink migration analysis have demonstrated that the symmetric reconstructions are always more likely to migrate. Further I have proposed a new theoretical model that can explain the enhancement of the dislocation mobility under forward bias. Abstract

First-principles calculations are used to investigate the Shockley partial dislocations in 4H-SiC. We show that both dislocations can sustain the asymmetric and symmetric reconstructions along the dislocation line. The latter reconstructions are always electrically active. In particular, the Si(g) 30 degrees partials can explain the optical activation energy for the dislocation glide at -2.4 eV above the VB, the narrow peak at 2.87 eV and the broadband at -1.8 eV found in photoluminescence spectra. Further, we propose a new model to explain the stability of the symmetric reconstructions and the enhancement of the dislocation velocity in SiC.

Abstract

Summary Bluetongue (BT) is an arthropod-transmitted viral disease of non-African ungulates, principally sheep. The disease results from vascular injury analogous to that of human haemorrhagic viral fevers, with characteristic tissue infarction, haemorrhage, vascular leakage, oedema, and hypovolaemic shock. Importantly, BT is not zoonotic. Bluetongue virus (BTV) infection of ruminants and vector Culicoides midges is endemic throughout many tropical and temperate regions of the world; however, within this global range the virus exists within relatively discrete ecosystems (syn. episystems) where specific constellations of BTV serotypes are spread by different species of biting Culicoides midges. Recently discovered goat-associated BTVs, notably BTV serotype 25 (BTV-25) in central Europe, appear to have distinctive biological properties and an epidemiology that is not reliant on Culicoides midges as vectors for virus transmission. Bluetongue virus infection of ruminants is often subclinical, but outbreaks of severe disease occur regularly at the upper and lower limits of the virus's global range, where infection is distinctly seasonal. There have been recent regional alterations in the global distribution of BTV infection, particularly in Europe. It is proposed that climate change is responsible for these events through its impact on vector midges. However, the role of anthropogenic factors in mediating emergence of BTV into new areas remains poorly defined; for example, it is not clear to what extent anthropogenic factors were responsible for the recent translocation to northern and eastern Europe of live attenuated vaccine viruses and an especially virulent strain of BTV-8 with distinctive properties. Without thorough characterisation of all environmental and anthropogenic drivers of the recent emergence of BT in northern Europe and elsewhere, it is difficult to predict what the future holds in terms of global emergence of BTV infection. Accurate and convenient laboratory tests are available for the sensitive and specific serological and virological diagnosis of BTV infection and confirmation of BT in animals. Prevention and control strategies for BT are largely reactive in nature, and typically are reliant on vaccination of susceptible livestock and restrictions on animal trade and movement.

Abstract

We present the final results from the XMM-Newton validation follow-up of new Planck galaxy cluster candidates. We observed 15 new candidates, detected with signal-to-noise ratios between 4.0 and 6.1 in the 15.5-month nominal Planck survey. The candidates were selected using ancillary data flags derived from the ROSAT All Sky Survey (RASS) and Digitized Sky Survey all-sky maps, with the aim of pushing into the low SZ flux, high-z regime and testing RASS flags as indicators of candidate reliability. Fourteen new clusters were detected by XMM-Newton, ten single clusters and two double systems. Redshifts from X-ray spectroscopy lie in the range 0.2 to 0.9, with six clusters at z > 0.5. Estimated masses (M500) range from 2.5 × 1014 to 8 × 1014 M⊙. We discuss our results in the context of the full XMM-Newton validation programme, in which 51 new clusters have been detected. This includes four double and two triple systems, some of which are chance projections on the sky of clusters at different redshifts. We find thatassociation with a source from the RASS-Bright Source Catalogue is a robust indicator of the reliability of a candidate, whereas association with a source from the RASS-Faint Source Catalogue does not guarantee that the SZ candidate is a bona fide cluster. Nevertheless, most Planck clusters appear in RASS maps, with a significance greater than 2σ being a good indication that the candidate is a real cluster. Candidate validation from association with SDSS galaxy overdensity at z > 0.5 is also discussed. The full sample gives a Planck sensitivity threshold of Y500 ~ 4 × 10-4 arcmin2, with indication for Malmquist bias in the YX-Y500 relation below this threshold. The corresponding mass threshold depends on redshift. Systems with M500 > 5 × 1014 M⊙ at z > 0.5 are easily detectable with Planck. The newly-detected clusters follow the YX-Y500 relation derived from X-ray selected samples. Compared to X-ray selected clusters, the new SZ clusters have a lower X-ray luminosity on average for their mass. There is no indication of departure from standard self-similar evolution in the X-ray versus SZ scaling properties. In particular, there is no significant evolution of the YX / Y500 ratio.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The fly Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) (Diptera: Drosophilidae) is an endemic pest, native to Southern Asia which has recently invaded western countries. Since its detection in 2008 in California and Spain, it is now established in North America and in many European countries. OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to evaluate the pest’s economic impact on the soft fruit industry in the Province of Trento, a region in the North East of Italy, which is one of the most productive soft fruit areas in Europe. METHODS: The evaluation takes into account both the growers’ potential revenue losses and the costs of pest control and uses a partial budgeting approach. Two scenarios are evaluated: the one before and the one after the implementation of an integrated control strategy for D. suzukii. RESULTS: Before the adoption of an integrated pest control strategy, the estimated revenue losses amounted to about 13% of the industry’s output. After the implementation of an integrated strategy this loss decreased to about 7% of the industry’s output. CONCLUSIONS: The adopted strategy seems effective in mitigating the pest’s economic impact. The knowledge about D. suzukii’s impact and its management would benefit from further analysis encompassing a larger geographical scope and longer time series.

Abstract

Carbon nanotubes present interesting potential applications especially in nanoelectronics. Their electrical properties are known to be a function of their chirality. It happens that 1/3 of CNs are metallic and 2/3 are semiconductors. Narrow nanotubes are expected to be wide-band gap semiconductors. Several experimental results have shown that the thickness of a multi-wall nanotube along the axis can change, while the interlayer spacing remains fairly constant. These observations suggest the coexistence in the same tube of a scroll structure and a multi-wall nested tube. We explain this defect as a screw dislocation which by gliding transforms between these two forms. In this paper, we present a density functional theory study of the structure and energetics of screw dislocations in AA and ABC graphite, and we discuss their role in the scroll-to-nanotube transformation in multi-wall nanotubes.

Abstract

First-principles calculations are used to investigate the partial dislocations in 4H-SiC. We show that the stability of the dislocation cores and the Peierls barriers of the first kind are chargestate dependent. In intrinsic bulk the partials are stable in the neutral asymmetric reconstructions. These reconstructions have no deep states and are characterized by high Peierls barriers. In strongly doped regime the symmetric reconstructions can become more stable. These reconstructions are always electrically active with a half filled band across the band gap. In particular the symmetric reconstructions of the 30° partial have a lower Peierls barriers than the respective asymmetric ones and could be the cause of the 1.8 eV electroluminescence peak observed under carrier injection conditions.

Abstract

Strawberry is an herbaceous perennial that can be easily propagated by stolons or by crown division. Seedlings have a few months in the juvenile period. The growth is determined with a terminal inflorescence as a modified stem or cyme. Flower induction is sensitive to thermo-photoperiod and to several agronomic and nutritional factors. The strawberry plant is highly adapted to diverse temperate climates and to production under forced artificial growing conditions. In the present study, a dynamic architectural model of growth is described and discussed in order to reveal strawberry development under different cultivation systems. The aim is to improve the cultural knowledge and understanding of the physiological control of axillary meristems, which can enhance the Strawberry fruit production.

Abstract

The morphogenic response of somatic (leaf and petiole) and de-differentiated tissue (callus) of two blackberry (Rubus fruticosus) and one raspberry (Rubus idaeus) cultivars have been studied in vitro. With the aim to induce regeneration the effect of two sets of plant growth regulator (PGR) combinations (high cytokinin/auxin ratios and high auxin/cytokinin ratios) in Murashige and Skoog basal medium, were analysed. The three cultivars were characterised by a qualitatively different morphogenic response to the PGR combinations. Raspberry adventitious shoot regeneration from somatic tissue was improved by the 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP)/indol-3-butyric acid (IBA) combinations. On the contrary, shoot regeneration of both blackberry cultivars was reduced by high concentrations of BAP and completely inhibited by BAP/IBA combination. Media supplemented with high auxin/cytokinin ratios promoted callus production and root differentiation according to genotype and type of auxin. All the genotypes responded to media supplemented with IBA. 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid induced good callus formation in blackberry, but was toxic to raspberry. Indirect shoot formation was observed only in callus of blackberry cultivar Hull Thornless cultivated on medium with 10 µM BAP, the same concentration able to trigger efficient direct shoot regeneration from leaf explants of the same cultivar.

Abstract

The effect of autonomic perturbation (AP) on the central nervous system functioning is still largely unknown. Using an automated neck suction device to stimulate the carotid mechanoreceptors in the carotid sinus (parasympathetic pathway), operated synchronously with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) acquisition, we investigated the effects of AP on the activity of the brain at rest and when engaged in a visuo-spatial attention task. ECG was always recorded to index changes in autonomic function. At rest, AP induced increased activation in the insula and in the amygdala, which have been previously associated with the autonomic control and emotion processing, as well as in the caudate nucleus and in the medial temporal cortex, both implicated in cognitive functions. Despite a preserved performance during visuo-spatial attention task, AP induced increased reaction times and a positive modulation on the activation of the right posterior parietal cortex, the occipital cortex, the periaquiductal gray, and nuclei of the brainstem. We speculate that this modulation of brain activity represents, at different anatomical levels, a compensation mechanism to maintain cognitive efficiency under parasympathetic stimulation, which is traditionally considered as the system for energy regain and storage. In conclusion, this study provides the first evidence of a dynamic interaction between AP and higher level functions in humans.

Abstract

A comparison is presented of Sunyaev-Zeldovich measurements for 11 galaxy clusters as obtained by Planck and by the ground-based interferometer, the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager. Assuming a universal spherically-symmetric Generalised Navarro, Frenk and White (GNFW) model for the cluster gas pressure profile, we jointly constrain the integrated Compton-Y parameter (Y 500) and the scale radius (θ500) of each cluster. Our resulting constraints in the Y500-θ500 2D parameter space derived from the two instruments overlap significantly for eight of the clusters, although, overall, there is a tendency for AMI to find the Sunyaev-Zeldovich signal to be smaller in angular size and fainter than Planck. Significant discrepancies exist for the three remaining clusters in the sample, namely A1413, A1914, and the newly-discovered Planck cluster PLCKESZ G139.59+24.18. The robustness of the analysis of both the Planck and AMI data is demonstrated through the use of detailed simulations, which also discount confusion from residual point (radio) sources and from diffuse astrophysical foregrounds as possible explanations for the discrepancies found. For a subset of our cluster sample, we have investigated the dependence of our results on the assumed pressure profile by repeating the analysis adopting the best-fitting GNFW profile shape which best matches X-ray observations. Adopting the best-fitting profile shape from the X-ray data does not, in general, resolve the discrepancies found in this subset of five clusters. Abstract

Migratory birds are considered one of the main sources for West Nile virus (WNV) introduction into European countries. Following the WNV epidemic in the late summer of 1998 in a marshy area of Tuscany (Padule of Fucecchio), an extensive ornithological surveillance programme was carried out in the infected areas from 2006 to 2008. Several species of migratory and resident birds were trapped, sampled and serologically tested. The results of this surveillance programme gave a useful indication of potential sources of WNV re-introduction and spread into Italy. The area under study was also investigated and classified into ecological areas through satellite image processing. In August 2008, the WNV infection re-emerged in Italy in the area surrounding the Po river delta, involving three regions: Lombardy, Emilia Romagna and Veneto. Several surveillance activities were immediately put in place, including the extensive monitoring of wild birds found dead or trapped in the framework of other surveillance programmes. These activities were also prolonged in the 2009, when the virus circulation re-occurred at the border of the area already infected in 2008. The possible epidemiological role of the different species of migratory and resident birds is discussed, in relation to the different ecological patterns identified in the area and their potential ability to introduce, spread and support the endemization of WNV infection.

Abstract

A dedicated mission to investigate exoplanetary atmospheres represents a major milestone in our quest to understand our place in the universe by placing our Solar System in context and by addressing the suitability of planets for the presence of life. EChO -the Exoplanet Characterisation Observatory- is a mission concept specifically geared for this purpose. EChO will provide simultaneous, multi-wavelength spectroscopic observations on a stable platform that will allow very long exposures. EChO will build on observations by Hubble, Spitzer and groundbased telescopes, which discovered the first molecules and atoms in exoplanetary atmospheres. EChO will simultaneously observe a broad enough spectral region -from the visible to the mid-IR- to constrain from one single spectrum the temperature structure of the atmosphere and the abundances of the major molecular species. The spectral range and resolution are tailored to separate bands belonging to up to 30 molecules to retrieve the composition and temperature structure of planetary atmospheres. The target list for EChO includes planets ranging from Jupiter-sized with equilibrium temperatures Teq up to 2000 K, to those of a few Earth masses, with Teq ~300 K. We have baselined a dispersive spectrograph design covering continuously the 0.4-16 micron spectral range in 6 channels (1 in the VIS, 5 in the IR), which allows the spectral resolution to be adapted from several tens to several hundreds, depending on the target brightness. The instrument will be mounted behind a 1.5 m class telescope, passively cooled to 50 K, with the instrument structure and optics passively cooled to ~45 K. EChO will be placed in a grand halo orbit around L2. We have also undertaken a first-order cost and development plan analysis and find that EChO is easily compatible with the ESA M-class mission framework., Comment: Accepted for publication in Experimental Astronomy, 23 pages, 15 figures
