Abstract

Three narrow resonances have been observed in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation into hadrons at total energies between 9.4 and 10.4 GeV. Measurements of mass spacings and ratios of lepton pair widths support the interpretation of these ''UPSILON'' states as the lowest triplet-S levels of the bb-bar quark-antiquark system.

Abstract

We consider three broad classes of nonstandard models for b quark decay: (1) b → llq with charged or neutral leptons of arbitrary flavor; (2) b → l q q ; and (3) b → qa − where a − is a Higgs boson or hyperpion. For these classes of models we have calculated the charged energy fraction and the inclusive yields of electrons, muons, protons, and lambdas. We demonstrate that these model predictions are inconsistent with CLEO measurements at the γ (4S).

Abstract

Using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, the authors have measured the leptonic branching fraction, B/sub mumu/, of the UPSILON(1S), UPSILON(2S), and UPSILON(3S) to be 2.7 +- 0.3 +- 0.3%, 1.9 +- 1.3 +- 0.5%, and 3.3 +- 1.3 +- 0.7%, respectively. Combining these values of B/sub mumu/ with previous measurements of the leptonic widths of these resonances, the authors find the total width of the UPSILON(1S), UPSILON(2S), and UPSILON(3S) to be 48 +- 4 +- 4, 27 +- 17 +- 6, and 13 +- 4 +- 3 keV.

Abstract

We have studied the production of B mesons in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilations and present new measurements of the semileptonic branching fractions for B-meson decay. We find B(B..-->..e..nu..X) = 0.127 +- 0.017 +- 0.013 and B(B..--> mu nu..X) = 0.122 +- 0.017 +- 0.031, where the errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. The observed lepton momentum spectra from B decays are presented. From these spectra we find the mean hadronic mass (M/sub X/) recoiling against the detected lepton to be M/sub X/ = 2.2 +- 0.2 GeV/c/sup 2/. We have also observed an enhancement in the lepton yield from the continuum above BB-bar threshold. This enhancement is interpreted as continuum B production and is consistent with what is expected from the naive quark model.

Abstract

A measurement is presented of the inclusive production of charged ${D}^{*}$ and neutral $D$ mesons from nonresonant ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ annihilation in the energy region near the $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)$ resonance. The momentum distribution shows a large contribution at high momenta as expected for heavy quark production. Comparison of the spectrum with several phenomenological models is made. The relative yields of the ${D}^{*}$ and $D$ mesons indicate that the charm cross section is dominated by the ${D}^{*}$ contribution.

Abstract

We report measurements made with the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) of the total cross section for ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{hadrons}$ at the $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(1S)$, $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(2S)$, and $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(3S)$, and in the nearby nonresonant continuum. We find $R=3.77\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.06 (\mathrm{statistical}) \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{} 0.24 (\mathrm{systematic})$ for the ratio of the nonresonant hadronic cross section to the cross section for muon-pair production at a center-of-mass total energy $W=10.4$ GeV. For the leptonic decay widths ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{\mathrm{ee}}$ of the $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(1S)$, $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(2S)$, and $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(3S)$ we obtain 1.30\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.08, 0.52\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.03\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04, and 0.42\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.03 keV, respectively.

Abstract

$B$-meson decays to final states consisting of a ${D}^{0}$ or ${D}^{*\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$ and one or two charged pions have been observed. The charged-$B$ mass is 5270.8 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{} 2.3 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{} 2.0 MeV and the neutral-$B$ mass is 5274.2 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{} 1.9 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{} 2.0 MeV.

Abstract

We have observed the decay of the UPSILON(2S) into the UPSILON(1S), obtaining a branching ratio of 19.1 +- 3.1 +- 2.9% for the mode UPSILON(2S)..--> pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/UPSILON(1S). The di-pion mass spectrum peaks at large invariant mass, and the angular distribution of the di-pion system is consistent with s-wave production.

Abstract

The branching ratio of UPSILON(3S)..--> pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/UPSILON(1S) has been measured to be (4.9 +- 0.9 +- 0.5)%. The di-pion invariant-mass distribution for this decay is flatter than that for the decays UPSILON(2S)..--> pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/UPSILON(1S) and psi'..--> pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/psi.

Abstract

Evidence is presented for a narrow meson resonance of mass 1970\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}5 MeV produced in continuum ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ annihilations at $\sqrt{s}$ of 10.5 GeV, and decaying into a $\ensuremath{\phi}$ and a charged $\ensuremath{\pi}$.

Abstract

The inclusive branching fraction for B-meson decay into D/sup 0/ mesons and the momentum spectrum of the D/sup 0/'s have been measured. 0.8 +- 0.2 +- 0.2 D/sup 0/ per B decay was found. The shape of the spectrum suggests an interesting picture of B-meson decay.

Abstract

An enhancement in the inclusive cross section for single muons produced in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilations at the UPSILON(4S) is observed, confirming the interpretation that a new bare flavor (B mesons) is produced at the UPSILON(4S). A branching ratio for B..-->..X..mu nu.. of (9.4 +- 3.6)% is obtained. The two-muon decay, B..-->..X..mu../sup +/..mu../sup -/, is not observed, providing a 90%-confidence-level upper limit for the branching ratio for the decay of 1.7%. Combining this with our previously reported limit of 5% for B..-->..Xe/sup +/e/sup -/, we obtain 1.3% as an upper limit for B..-->..Xl/sup + -/.

Abstract

The charged multiplicity has been measured at the UPSILON(4S) and a value of 5.75 +- 0.1 +- 0.2 has been obtained for the mean charged multiplicity in B-meson decay. Combining this result with the measurement of prompt letpons from B decay, the values 4.1 +- 0.35 +- 0.2 and 6.3 +- 0.2 +- 0.2 are found for the semileptonic and nonleptonic charged multiplicities, respectively. If b..-->..c dominance is assumed for the weak decay of the B meson, then the semileptonic multiplicity is consistent with the recoil mass determined from the lepton momentum spectrum.

Abstract

A measurement is presented of inclusive charged D* (2010) production from nonresonant e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation in the center-of-mass energy (W) range 10.2 GeV..D/sup 0/..pi../sup +/..-->..K/sup -/..pi../sup +/..pi../sup +/ and the charge conjugate mode. It is found that 40 +- 7 +- 13% of the charm quarks from the process e/sup +/e/sup -/..-->..cc-bar result in D* mesons with z>0.7 (z = 2E/W, where E is the D* energy).

Abstract

Data on inclusive kaon production in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilations at energies in the vicinity of the UPSILON(4S) resonance are presented. A clear excess of kaons is observed on the UPSILON(4S) compared to the continuum. Under the assumption that the UPSILON(4S) decays into BB-bar, a total of 3.38 +- 0.34 +- 0.68 kaons per UPSILON(4S) decay is found. In the context of the standard B-decay model this leads to a value for (b..-->..c)/(b..-->..all) of 1.09 +- 0.33 +- 0.13.

An enhancement has been observed in the inclusive cross section for direct single electrons produced in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at the UPSILON(4S). This is interpreted as evidence for a new weakly decaying particle, the B meson. A branching ratio for B..-->..Xe..nu.. of (13 +- 3( +- 3))% is inferred, where the first set of errors is statistical and the estimated systematic error is enclosed in parentheses.

Abstract

In a sample of B mesons from the decay of the UPSILON(4S) produced in e/sup +/e/sup -/ collisions at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, inclusive protons, antiprotons, lambdas and antilambdas have been observed. Lower limits to the B-to-baryon branching ratios are derived.

Abstract

A fourth state in the upsilon energy region has been seen in e/sup +/e/sup -/ collisions at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. A resonance is observed with a mass 1112 +- 5 MeV above the lowest upsilon state. The 9.6-MeV rms width is greater than the 4.6-MeV energy resolution of the e/sup +/e/sup -/ beams. The observed characteristics of the new state make it a likely candidate for the 4/sup 3/S state of the bb-bar system, lying above the threshold for the production of B mesons.

Abstract

We have searched for decays of the UPSILON(1S) into a single high-energy photon and a noninteracting long-lived particle, using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. An upper limit of 3 x 10/sup -4/ (at 90% confidence level) is obtained for the branching ratio for such decays.

Abstract

Background: Neisseria gonorrhoeae (Ng) causes the sexually transmitted disease gonorrhoea. There are no vaccines and infections are treated principally with antibiotics. However, gonococci rapidly develop resistance to every antibiotic class used and there is a need for developing new antimicrobial treatments. In this study we focused on two gonococcal enzymes as potential antimicrobial targets, namely the serine protease L,D-carboxypeptidase LdcA (NgO1274/NEIS1546) and the lytic transglycosylase LtgD (NgO0626/NEIS1212). To identify compounds that could interact with these enzymes as potential antimicrobials, we used the AtomNet virtual high-throughput screening technology. We then did a computational modelling study to examine the interactions of the most bioactive compounds with their target enzymes. The identified compounds were tested against gonococci to determine minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations (MIC/MBC), specificity, and compound toxicity in vitro., Results: AtomNet identified 74 compounds that could potentially interact with Ng-LdcA and 84 compounds that could potentially interact with Ng-LtgD. Through MIC and MBC assays, we selected the three best performing compounds for both enzymes. Compound 16 was the most active against Ng-LdcA, with a MIC50 value < 1.56 µM and MBC50/90 values between 0.195 and 0.39 µM. In general, the Ng-LdcA compounds showed higher activity than the compounds directed against Ng-LtgD, of which compound 45 had MIC50 values of 1.56-3.125 µM and MBC50/90 values between 3.125 and 6.25 µM. The compounds were specific for gonococci and did not kill other bacteria. They were also non-toxic for human conjunctival epithelial cells as judged by a resazurin assay. To support our biological data, in-depth computational modelling study detailed the interactions of the compounds with their target enzymes. Protein models were generated in silico and validated, the active binding sites and amino acids involved elucidated, and the interactions of the compounds interacting with the enzymes visualised through molecular docking and Molecular Dynamics Simulations for 50 ns and Molecular Mechanics Poisson-Boltzmann Surface Area (MM-PBSA)., Conclusions: We have identified bioactive compounds that appear to target the N. gonorrhoeae LdcA and LtgD enzymes. By using a reductionist approach involving biological and computational data, we propose that compound Ng-LdcA-16 and Ng-LtgD-45 are promising anti-gonococcal compounds for further development., (© 2024. (2) Examine acne treatment guidance on pre-specified acne treatments of interest and compare between acne guidelines., Methods: Searches for new or updated guidelines were carried out in MEDLINE, Embase, Google Scholar, LILACS from 1 January 2017 to 31 July 2021, supplemented by searching a guideline-specific depository and checking for updates to guidelines included in previous review. We included guidelines, consensus statements or care protocols on the medical treatment of acne vulgaris in adults and/or children and excluded those that focused on a single intervention or subgroup of acne, regional adaptations of guidelines or guidelines included in previous review. AGREE II checklist was applied to critically appraise reporting of guidelines. Results were synthesised narratively., Results: Of 807 abstracts identified nine guidelines were identified that were eligible for inclusion. All guidelines had AGREE II scores above average in at least one domain and reporting was substantially improved compared to the systematic review of acne carried out 5 years previously. There was consensus between guidelines on the key role of topical treatments as first-line acne treatment and most recommended continuing topical treatments as maintenance therapy. There was considerable variation between guidelines on classification of severity, indications for commencing oral antibiotics and on maximum duration of oral antibiotics. However, there was consensus on the need for co-prescription of a non-antibiotic topical treatment when using oral antibiotics. There were notable differences on recommendations regarding provision of information for patients on how to use topical treatments or how to mitigate against side effects., Conclusions: Substantial differences in classification of acne severity hampered comparisons between guidelines. Although development and reporting of guidelines has improved over the past 5 years, differences in key recommendations remain, possibly reflecting uncertainties in the underlying evidence base. Differences between guidelines could have substantial implications for prevalence of antibiotic prescribing for acne., Competing Interests: Alison M.
