The escape fraction of Lyman-continuum (LyC) photons ($f_{esc}$) is a key parameter for determining the sources of cosmic reionization at $z\geq 6$. At these redshifts, owing to the opacity of the intergalactic medium, the LyC emission cannot be measured directly. However, LyC leakers during the epoch of reionization could be identified using indirect indicators that have been extensively tested at low and intermediate redshifts. These include a high [OIII]/[OII] flux ratio, high star-formation surface density, and compact sizes. In this work, we present observations of 29 $4.5 \leq z \leq 8$ gravitationally lensed galaxies in the Abell 2744 cluster field. From a combined analysis of JWST-NIRSpec and NIRCam data, we accurately derived their physical and spectroscopic properties: our galaxies have low masses $(\log(M_\star)\sim 8.5)$, blue UV spectral slopes ($\beta \sim -2.1$), compact sizes ($r_e \sim 0.3-0.5$ kpc), and high [OIII]/[OII] flux ratios. We confirm that these properties are similar to those characterizing low-redshift LyC leakers. Indirectly inferring the fraction of escaping ionizing photons, we find that more than 80% of our galaxies have predicted $f_{esc}$ values larger than 0.05, indicating that they would be considered leakers. The average predicted $f_{esc}$ value of our sample is 0.12, suggesting that similar galaxies at $z\geq 6$ have provided a substantial contribution to cosmic reionization., Comment: Accepted for publication in the 4. Early JWST spectroscopic campaigns have confirmed the presence of strong [O III] line-emitting galaxies in the redshift interval $7, Comment: 8 pages, submitted to MNRAS

We investigate the blue and optical rest-frame sizes (lambda~2300A-4000A) of three compact star-forming regions in a galaxy at z=4 strongly lensed (x30, x45, x100) by the Hubble Frontier Field galaxy cluster A2744 using GLASS-ERS JWST/NIRISS imaging at 1.15um, 1.50mu and 2.0mu with PSF < 0.1". In particular, the Balmer break is probed in detail for all multiply-imaged sources of the system. With ages of a few tens of Myr, stellar masses in the range (0.7-4.0) x 10^6 Msun and optical/ultraviolet effective radii spanning the interval 3 < R_eff < 20 pc, such objects are currently the highest redshift (spectroscopically-confirmed) gravitationally-bound young massive star clusters (YMCs), with stellar mass surface densities resembling those of local globular clusters. Optical (4000A, JWST-based) and ultraviolet (1600A, HST-based) sizes are fully compatible. The contribution to the ultraviolet underlying continuum emission (1600A) is ~30%, which decreases by a factor of two in the optical for two of the YMCs (~4000A rest-frame), reflecting the young ages (, 10 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. According to the current paradigm of galaxy formation, the first galaxies have been likely formed within large dark matter haloes. The fragmentation of these massive haloes led to the formation of galaxy protoclusters, which are usually composed of one to a few bright objects, surrounded by numerous fainter (and less massive) galaxies. These early structures could have played a major role in reionising the neutral hydrogen within the first billion years of the Universe; especially, if their number density is significant.Taking advantage of the unprecedented sensitivity reached by the \textit{James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)}, galaxy protoclusters can now be identified and studied in increasing numbers beyond $z\geq\ $6. Characterising their contribution to the UV photon budget could supply new insights into the reionisation process. We analyse the first JWST dataset behind SMACS0723-7327 to search for protoclusters at $z\geq6$, combining the available spectroscopic and photometric data. We then compare our findings with semi-analytical models and simulations. In addition to two bright galaxies ($\leq$26.5 AB in F277W), separated by $\sim$11\arcsec and spectroscopically confirmed at $z_{spec}=7.66$, we identify 6 additional galaxies with similar colors in a $\theta\sim20$\arcsec radius around these (corresponding to R$\sim60-90$ kpc in the source plane). Using several methods, we estimate the mass of the dark matter halo of this protocluster, $\sim$3.3$\times$10$^{11}$M$_{\odot}$ accounting for magnification, consistent with various predictions. The physical properties of all protocluster members are also in excellent agreement with what has been previously found at lower redshifts: star-formation main sequence and protocluster size. The GLASS-JWST Early Release Science (hereafter GLASS-JWST-ERS) Program will obtain and make publicly available the deepest extragalactic data of the ERS campaign. It is primarily designed to address two key science questions, namely, “what sources ionized the universe and when?” and “how do baryons cycle through galaxies?”, while also enabling a broad variety of first look scientific investigations. In primary mode, it will obtain NIRISS and NIRSpec spectroscopy of galaxies lensed by the foreground Hubble Frontier Field cluster, Abell 2744. In parallel, it will use NIRCam to observe two fields that are offset from the cluster center, where lensing magnification is negligible, and which can thus be effectively considered blank fields. In order to prepare the community for access to this unprecedented data, we describe the scientific rationale, the survey design (including target selection and observational setups), and present pre-commissioning estimates of the expected sensitivity. In addition, we describe the planned public releases of high-level data products, for use by the wider astronomical community.

Wide Field Slitless Spectroscopy (WFSS) provides a powerful tool for detecting strong line emission in star forming galaxies (SFGs) without the need for target pre-selection. As part of the GLASS-JWST-ERS program, we leverage the near-infrared wavelength capabilities of NIRISS ($1-2.2\mu$m) to observe rest-optical emission lines out to $\rm{z}\sim 3.4$, to a depth and with a spatial resolution higher than ever before (H$\alpha$ to z750$A in our sample to be $12\%$. We determine a strong correlation between the measured H$\beta$ and [OIII]$\lambda5007$ EWs, supporting that the high [OIII]$\lambda5007$ EW objects require massive stars in young stellar populations to generate the high energy photons needed to doubly ionise oxygen. We extracted spectra for objects up to 2 mag fainter in the near-infrared than previous WFSS studies with the Hubble Space Telescope. Context.The near-Earth asteroid (1917) Cuyo was subject to radar and light curve observations during a close approach in 1989, and observed up until 2008. It was selected as one of our ESO Large Programme targets, aimed at observational detections of the Yarkovsky-O’Keefe-Radzievskii-Paddack (YORP) effect through long-term light curve monitoring and physical modelling of near-Earth asteroids.Aims.We aim to constrain the physical properties of Cuyo: shape, spin-state, and spectroscopic and thermo-physical properties of the surface.Methods.We acquired photometric light curves of Cuyo spanning the period between 2010 and 2013, which we combined with published light curves from 1989 to 2008. Our thermal-infrared observations were obtained in 2011. Rotationally resolved optical spectroscopy data were acquired in 2011 and combined with all available published spectra to investigate any surface material variegation.Results.We developed a convex light curve-inversion shape of Cuyo that suggests the presence of an equatorial ridge, typical for an evolved system close to shedding mass due to fast rotation. We determine limits of YORP strength through light curve-based spin-state modelling, including both negative and positive acceleration values, between − 0.7 × 10−8and 1.7 × 10−8rad day−2. Thermo-physical modelling with the ATPM provides constraints on the geometric albedo,pV= 0.24 ± 0.07, the effective diameter,Deff= 3.15 ± 0.08km, the thermal inertia, Γ = 44 ± 9 J m−2s−1∕2K−1, and a roughness fraction of 0.52 ± 0.26. This enabled a YORP strength prediction ofν= (−6.39 ± 0.96) × 10−10rad day−2. We also see evidence of surface compositional variation.Conclusions.The low value of YORP predicted by means of thermo-physical analysis, consistent with the results of the light curve study, might be due to the self-limiting properties of rotational YORP, possibly involving movement of sub-surface and surface material. This may also be consistent with the surface compositional variation that we see. The physical model of Cuyo can be used to investigate cohesive forces as a way to explain why some targets survive rotation rates faster than the fission limit.

In this paper, we present a unique data set of more than one year's worth of regular observations of comet C/2013 A1(Siding Spring) with TRAPPIST in Chile, along with low-resolution spectra obtained with the ESO/VLT FORS 2 instrument. The comet made a close approach to Mars on October 19, 2014 and was then observed by many space and ground-based telescopes. We followed the evolution of the OH, NH, CN, $\mathrm{C_3}$, and $\mathrm{C_2}$ production rates as well as the $Af\rho$ parameter as a proxy for the dust production. We detected an outburst two weeks after perihelion, with gas and dust production rates being multiplied by a factor five within a few days. By modelling the shape of the CN and $\mathrm{C_2}$ radial profiles, we determined that the outburst happened around on November 10 around 15:30 UT ($\pm$ 5h) and measured a gas ejection velocity of $1.1\pm0.2$ km/s. We used a thermal evolution model to reproduce the activity pattern and outburst. Our results are consistent with the progressive formation of a dust mantle explaining the shallow dependence of gas production rates, which may be partially blown off during the outburst. We studied the evolution of gas composition, using various ratios such as CN/OH, $\mathrm{C_2}$/OH, or $\mathrm{C_3}$/OH, which showed little or no variation with heliocentric distance including at the time of the outburst.
