We present the results of the spin asymmetries $A_1$ of the proton and the deuteron in the kinematic region extending down to $x=6\cdot 10^{-5}$ and $Q^2=0.01$ GeV$^2$. The data were taken with a dedicated low $x$ trigger, which required hadron detection in addition to the scattered muon, so as to reduce the background at low $x$. The results complement our previous measurements and the two sets are consistent in the overlap region. No sig\-ni\-fi\-cant spin effects are found in the newly explored region.

A search for scalar and vector leptoquarks coupling to first generation fermions is performed using the e^+p and e^-p scattering data collected by the H1 experiment between 1994 and 2000. The data correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 117 pb^{-1}. No evidence for the direct or indirect production of such particles is found in data samples with a large transverse momentum final state electron or with large missing transverse momentum. Constraints on leptoquark models are established. For leptoquark couplings of electromagnetic strength, leptoquarks with masses up to 275-325 GeV are ruled out. These limits improve and supercede earlier H1 limits based on subsamples of the data used here., 15 pages, 1 table, 5 figures

The asymmetry distributions for several kinematic variables are considered for finding a systematic way to maximize the signal for the extraction of the polarized gluon density. The relevance of mass effects for the corresponding dijet cross section is discussed and the different approximations for including mass effects are compared. We also compare via the programs Pepsi and Mepjet two different Monte Carlo (MC) approaches for simulating the expected signal in the dijet asymmetry at a polarized HERA., Comment: 18 pages, LaTeX, minor stylistic changes for Z.Phys.C

Contrails and especially their evolution into cirrus-like clouds are thought to have very important effects on local and global radiation budgets, though are generally not well represented in global climate models. Lack of contrail parameterisations is due to the limited availability of in situ contrail measurements which are difficult to obtain. Here we present a methodology for successful sampling and interpretation of contrail microphysical and radiative data using both in situ and remote sensing instrumentation on board the FAAM BAe146 UK research aircraft as part of the COntrails Spreading Into Cirrus (COSIC) study. Forecast models were utilised to determine flight regions suitable for contrail formation and sampling; regions that were both free of cloud but showed a high probability of occurrence of air mass being supersaturated with respect to ice. The FAAM research aircraft, fitted with cloud microphysics probes and remote sensing instruments, formed a distinctive spiral-shaped contrail in the predicted area by flying in an orbit over the same ground position as the wind advected the contrails to the east. Parts of these contrails were sampled during the completion of four orbits, with sampled contrail regions being between 7 and 30 min old. Lidar measurements were useful for in-flight determination of the location and spatial extent of the contrails, and also to report extinction values that agreed well with those calculated from the microphysical data. A shortwave spectrometer was also able to detect the contrails, though the signal was weak due to the dispersion and evaporation of the contrails. Post-flight the UK Met Office NAME III dispersion model was successfully used as a tool for modelling the dispersion of the persistent contrail; determining its location and age, and determining when there was interference from other measured aircraft contrails or when cirrus encroached on the area later in the flight. The persistent contrails were found to consist of small (~10 μm) plate-like crystals where growth of ice crystals to larger sizes (~100 μm) was typically detected when higher water vapour levels were present. Using the cloud microphysics data, extinction co-efficient values were calculated and found to be 0.01–1 km−1. The contrails formed during the flight (referred to as B587) were found to have a visible lifetime of ~40 min, and limited water vapour supply was thought to have suppressed ice crystal growth.

Aerosols and their precursors are emitted abundantly by transport activities. Transportation constitutes one of the fastest growing activities and its growth is predicted to increase significantly in the future. Previous studies have estimated the aerosol direct radiative forcing from one transport sub-sector, but only one study to our knowledge estimated the range of radiative forcing from the main aerosol components (sulphate, black carbon (BC) and organic carbon) for the whole transportation sector. In this study, we compare results from two different chemical transport models and three radiation codes under different hypothesis of mixing: internal and external mixing using emission inventories for the year 2000. The main results from this study consist of a positive direct radiative forcing for aerosols emitted by road traffic of +20±11 mW m−2 for an externally mixed aerosol, and of +32±13 mW m−2 when BC is internally mixed. These direct radiative forcings are much higher than the previously published estimate of +3±11 mW m−2. For transport activities from shipping, the net direct aerosol radiative forcing is negative. This forcing is dominated by the contribution of the sulphate. For both an external and an internal mixture, the radiative forcing from shipping is estimated at −26±4 mW m−2. These estimates are in very good agreement with the range of a previously published one (from −46 to −13 mW m−2) but with a much narrower range. By contrast, the direct aerosol forcing from aviation is estimated to be small, and in the range −0.9 to +0.3 mW m−2.

Severe hyponatremia has been observed in three children with sickle cell disease, and mild hyponatremia was noted during 36% of random hospitalizations for sickle crisis secondary to vasoocclusion or infection. Serum and urinary electrolytes were therefore studied in such patients. Hyponatremia was found in 52% of patients hospitalized with pain and/or fever, even though they received large amounts of sodium intravenously. Urine sodium losses were high with frequent negative sodium balance and weight loss. When well, these patients did not demonstrate hyponatremia, although urinary salt losses appeared to be just as high, suggesting compensatory salt intake when the children are well. It is essential to monitor electrolytes and urinary losses to manage sickle crisis properly. Six to 11 mEq/kg/day of sodium is suggested as a usual need of these patients during crisis. Sickle cell disease patients have, in addition to the better known defect in concentration of urine, a functional defect in dilution of urine at least during periods of "crisis".

Results on diffractive photoproduction of psi(2S) mesons are presented using data collected between 1996 and 2000 with the H1 detector at the HERA ep collider. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 77 pb(-1). The energy dependence of the diffractive psi(2S) cross section is found to be similar to or possibly somewhat steeper than that for J/psi mesons. The dependences of the elastic and proton dissociative psi(2S) photoproduction cross sections on the squared momentum transfer t at the proton vertex are measured. The t-dependence of the elastic channel, parametrised as e(bt), yields b(el)(psi(2S)) = (4.31 +/- 0.57 +/- 0.46) GeV-2, compatible with that of the J/psi. For the proton dissociative channel the result b(pd)(psi(2S)) = (0.59 +/- 0.13 +/- 0.12) GeV-2 is 2.3 standard deviations smaller than that measured for the J/psi. With proper account of the individual wavefunctions theoretical predictions based on perturbative QCD are found to describe the measurements well. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The results of a leading-order QCD analysis of neutrino-induced charm production are presented. They are based on a sample of 4111 $\nu_\mu$ - and 871 $\bar \nu_\mu$ -induced opposite-sign dimuon events with $E_{\mu 1},E_{\mu 2} > 6{\rm GeV}$ , $35 < E_{\nu} < 290{\rm GeV}$ and $Q^2> 5.5\,{\rm GeV^2}$ , observed in the CHARM II detector exposed to the CERN wide band neutrino and antineutrino beams. The analysis yields the value of the charm quark mass $m_c=1.79\pm0.38\,{\rm GeV}/c^2$ and the Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa matrix element $|V_{cd}|=0.219\pm0.016$ . The strange quark content of the nucleon is found to be suppressed with respect to non-strange sea quarks by a factor $\kappa =0.39\pm0.09$ .

A new search for decays of heavy isosinglet neutrinos produced by neutral-current neutrino interactions in the CERN wide-band neutrino beam has been conducted by the CHARM-II Collaboration. We searched for heavy neutrinos created by scattering muon neutrinos on nucleons and decaying into μ + μ − ν μ . Production and decay of heavy neutrinos would appear as double events in the detector. Each double event candidate was tested wheather the measured quantities are compatible with the kinematics of this process. No event passed this test. The analysis is based on 2 × 10 7 neutral-current neutrino events collected from 1987–1991. The experiment is sensitive to heavy neutrinos in the mass range 0.3–2.4 GeV/ c 2 . The best limit for the mixing parameter is | U μi | 2 −5 for a mass around 2 GeV/ c 2 . The analysis improve order of magnitude previous results derived from wide-band neutrino beam exposures of the CHARM detector.

We report new constraints on the existence of additional Z bosons derived from neutrino-electron scattering data. The analysis is based on data taken by the CHARM II Collaboration during five years of exposure of the detector to the wide band neutrino beam at CERN. The limits on the mass of these new particles are evaluated in the framework of E 6 superstring-inspired theories and Left-Right symmetric models. Limits on the so-called Z 1 are also reported.

We are reporting the first experimental result of the coupling of the muon neutrino with the Z. This result is in good agreement with the average value of the coupling of the three neutrino families as derived from the invisible decay width of the Z. We also determined gντ assuming Nν=3.

A muon beam polarimeter was built for the SMC experiment at the CERN SPS, for beam energies of 100 and 190 GeV. The beam polarisation is determined from the asymmetry in the elastic scattering off the polarised electrons of a ferromagnetic target whose magnetisation is periodically reversed. At muon energies of 100 and 190 GeV the measured polarisation is P-mu = -0.80 +/- 0.03 (stat.) +/- 0.02 (syst.) and P-mu = - 0.797 +/- 0.011 (stat.) +/- 0.012 (syst.), respectively. These results agree with measurements of the beam polarisation using a shape analysis of the decay positron energy spectrum. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Arrays of limited streamer tubes of the Iarocci type were deployed in our experiment at CERN as part of a forward muon detector system with provisions for the beam to pass through the center of each panel in the array. A total of 16 4 m x 4 m panels were assembled with inductive readout strips on both sides of each panel. An active feedback system. was deployed to regulate the high voltage to the streamer tubes to insure a constant efficiency for minimum ionizing particles. The arrays were operated in this environment for over five years of data taking. Streamer tube track-reconstruction efficiencies and tube replacement rates are reported. The polarized target of the Spin Muon Collaboration at CERN was used for deep inelastic muon scattering experiments during 1993-1996 with a polarized muon beam to investigate the spin structure of the nucleon. Most of the experiments were carried out with longitudinal target polarization and 190 GeV muons, and some were done with transverse polarization and 100 GeV muons. Protons as well as deuterons were polarized by dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) in three kinds of solid materials - butanol, ammonia, and deuterated butanol - with maximum degrees of polarization of 94%, 91% and 60%, respectively. Considerable attention was paid to the accuracies of the NMR polarization measurements and their analyses, the accuracies achieved were between 2.0% and 3.2%. The SMC target system with two cells of opposite polarizations, each cell 65 cm long and 5 cm in diameter, constitutes the largest polarized target system ever built and facilitates accurate spin asymmetry measurements. The design considerations, construction and performance of the target are reviewed, (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

We present a next-to-leading order QCD analysis of the presently available data on the spin structure function [Formula Presented] including the final data from the Spin Muon Collaboration. We present results for the first moments of the proton, deuteron, and neutron structure functions, and determine singlet and nonsinglet parton distributions in two factorization schemes. We also test the Bjorken sum rule and find agreement with the theoretical prediction at the level of 10%. © 1998 The American Physical Society.

The 1996 data taking of the SMC experiment used polarized protons to measure the spin-dependent structure function g(1) of the proton. Three liters of solid granular ammonia were irradiated at the Bonn electron linac in order to create the paramagnetic radicals which are needed for polarizing the protons. Proton polarizations of +/- (90 +/- 2.5)% were routinely reached. An analysis based on a theoretical line shape for spin-1. systems with large quadrupolar broadening was developed which allowed the nitrogen polarization in the ammonia to be determined with a 10% relative error. The measured quadrupolar coupling constant of N-14 agrees well with earlier extrapolated values. The polarization of the nitrogen nuclei was measured as a function of the proton polarization in order to provide a test of the equal spin temperature (EST) hypothesis. It was found to be closely valid under the dynamic nuclear polarization conditions with which the protons are polarized. Large deviations from EST could be induced by cross relaxing the proton and nitrogen spin systems at low fields. Nitrogen polarizations up to 40% were reached by these means. We report our final results from the analysis of the full high statistics sample of events of the reaction \imd\,\, collected with the \CHARMII{} detector in the CERN wide-band neutrino beam during the years 1988 to~1991. From a signal of 15,758 \pm 324 inverse muon decay events we derived, in the Born approximation, a value of (16.51 \pm 0.93) \times 10^{-42} \unit{cm}^2 \unit{GeV}^{-1} for the asymptotic cross section slope \sigma/E_\nu, in good agreement with the Standard Model prediction of 17.23 \times 10^{-42} \unit{cm}^2 \unit{GeV}^{-1}. The result constrains the scalar coupling of the electron and the muon to |\gLL{S}|^2 < 0.475\ \rm{at}\ 90\%\ \rm{CL}.

We report new bounds on electromagnetic properties of the muon neutrino obtained from a study of neutrino-electron scattering. The results are based on the analysis of differential cross section data collected with the CHARM II detector. The 90% C.L. limit on the magnetic moment of the muon-neutrino mu(nu mu) < 3 . 10(-9) mu(B) confirms limits obtained at much lower energies. The limit on the anomalous charge radius of the muon neutrino \[r(2)]anom\ < 6.0 . 10(-33) cm(2) improves earlier results by nearly a factor three.

A search for upsilon(mu) --> upsilon(e) and ($) over bar upsilon(mu) --> ($) over bar upsilon(e) oscillations has been carried out with the CHARM LI detector exposed to the CERN wide band neutrino beam. The data were collected over five years, alternating beams mainly composed of muon-neutrinos and muon-antineutrinos. The number of interactions of upsilon(e) and ($) over bar upsilon(e) observed is comparable with the number of events expected from flux calculations. For large squared mass differences the upper limits obtained on the mixing angle are sin(2)2 theta < 9.4.10(-3) for upsilon(mu) oscillating to upsilon(e) and sin(2)2 theta < 4.8.10(-3) for ($) over bar upsilon(mu) to ($) over bar upsilon(e) at the 90% confidence level. Combining neutrino and antineutrino data the upper limit is 5.6.10(-3).

New results on inverse muon decay and coherent charged pion production by neutrinos are presented. The data come from the CHARM-II neutrino detector operated at the CERN wide-band neutrino beam. High-statistics data samples of 14500 inverse muon decay events and 3500 νμe elastic scattering events allow the determination of the electroweak parameters from the ratio of the cross-sections of neutral-to-charged-current neutrino electron scattering. The best fit values of the electroweak mixing angle sin 2 Ω w and the relative coupling strength ϱ of neutral and charged current are: sin 2 Ω w = 0.237 ± 0.014 and ϱ = 0.987 ± 0.042 . In the second topic, coherent single charged pion production was measured in neutrino and antineutrino beams. The measured cross-sections, averaged over the wide-band beam spectra and the glass target nuclei composition, are: σ(νμA → μ−π+A) = (51 ± 10) × 10−40 cm2 nucleus and σ( ν μ A → μ + π − A) = (43 ± 9) × 10 −40 cm 2 nucleus. The energy dependence shows the expected flattering of the cross-sections at high energy.

We are reporting on a determination of neutral current coupling constants from a study of differential cross sections of muon-(anti)neutrino electron scattering. The results were obtained with the CHARM-II detector which was exposed to the CERN wide band neutrino beam in the years 1987 to 1991. A total of about 3000 ve and 3000 v e scattering events were observed. We present a preliminary value of sin2φw determined with the ratio of neutrino and antineutrino electron scattering cross-sections, based on the full data sample, and we give a determination of the effective vector and axial-vector neutral current coupling constants and the first measurement of the shape of the y-distributions based on 80% of the total statistics.

The fine granularity of the CHARM-II detector has been exploited to search, in the CERN-SPS wide band neutrino beam, for quasi-elastic nu(tau) interactions followed by the decay tau --> pinu(tau). Since the sampling thickness of the target calorimeter corresponds to approximately 1/9 of an interaction length, these events appear in the detector as a single track followed by a hadronic shower. The study of the ''single pion'' events is used to set limits on the nu(mu) --> nu(tau) oscillation parameters. The maximum sensitivity to the mixing angle theta is reached for DELTAm2 = 50 eV2 allowing to exclude values of sin2 20 greater than 6.4 x 10(-3) at 90% CL.

We report on a measurement of coherent single charged pion production in neutrino-nucleus scattering. The analysis is based on data taken with the CHARM II detector in beams of muon-neutrinos and -antineutrinos. The event numbers amount to N(μ−π) = 748 and N(μ+π) = 631. Cross sections and their dependence on the neutrino energy are determined. The results are in agreement with the predictions of models based on the PCAC hypothesis.

The neutrino detector CHARM-II at CERN, consisting of a large target calorimeter equipped with streamer tubes and a muon spectrometer, has been exposed to a test beam of electrons, pions and muons with momenta between 2 and 60 GeV/c in order to study the digital response of the streamer tubes, the analog response of the pickup strips and the momentum resolution of the muon spectrometer. Methods have been developed to carry the calibration results in space from the impact point of the test beam to the bulk of the detector and in time from the test beam period to all the data taking periods between 1987 and 1991, The number of hits along muon tracks was used to parametrize the dependence on fluctuations of temperature, tube voltage and gas composition. Curves and formulae are presented showing the energy response and the energy resolution for the different beam particles. The test beam data have been used to optimize and calibrate algorithms for the kinematical reconstruction of electron showers and for their extraction from the vast background of hadronic showers.

We report on a study of the differential cross section dσ/dy for the processes of elastic νμ- and ν μ - electron scattering. The data on which this analysis is based were recorded between 1987 and 1990 with the CHARM II detector in the wide band neutrino beam at the CERN-SPS. For the first time the shapes of these y-distributions have been determined in a model-independent way. A fit to the data yields for the squares of the neutral coupling constants the ratio gR2/gL2=0.60 ± 0.19 (stat.) ± 0.09 (syst.).

We are reporting on a determination of neutral current coupling constants from a study of differential cross sections of muon- (anti)neutrino-electron scattering. The results were obtained with the CHARM-II detector which was exposed to the CERN wide band neutrino beam in the years 1987–1990. A total of about 2100 ve and 2200 ve scattering events were observed. From a comparison between the data and predicted event distributions, the effective vector and axial-vector neutral current coupling constants of the electron were determined to be g e v =−0.025±0.019 and g e A =−0.503±0.018.

We are reporting on a new determination of sin2ϑw from the ratio of v μ e to v e scattering cross sections. A new detector designed for this purpose was exposed tothe Wide Band Neutrino Beamof the 450 GeV (CERN SPS. An analysis of data taken in 1987 and 1988 is presented based on 762 vμe and 1017 v e events. From the ratio of σ( v μ e ) to σ( v μ e ) we determined sin2ϑw=0.233±0.012 (stat) ± 0.008 (syst) without radiative correction. With radiative correction for mt=mH=100 GeV we find sin2ϑw=0.232±0.012(stat)±0.008(syst).

- Abstract
We report on determinations of the neutral current coupling constants of the electron from the study of muon neutrino and antineutrino scattering off electrons. The results were obtained with the CHARM II detector which was exposed to the CERN wide band neutrino beam during the years 1987 to 1991. We present the determination of g V and g A from the measurement of νμ e and ν̄μ e cross sections with 80% of the data and a preliminary result for sin2θ w from the ratio of νμ e and v̄μ e cross sections, using the full data sample. We furthermore give results from the comparison of neutrino electron scattering with inverse muon decay and present the first measurement of the y‐distributions for νμ e and ν̄μ e scattering. The agreement between our results and those from the measurements at LEP demonstrates the validity of the Standard Model over a range in momentum transfer which spans six orders of magnitude.

- Abstract
According to the WHO, sexual health is not merely the absence of disease. Sexual dysfunction may be present in 40.8% of psoriasis patients, furthermore, 68% prevalence was found in Brazilian women with psoriasis. The moderate prevalence of psoriatic lesions in the genital area (35%-42%) does not explain the alarming prevalence of sexual dysfunction. Other factors, such as anxiety, depression, and also psoriasis treatment may contribute to its development. Likewise, atherosclerosis of the pelvic vasculature is involved in the pathogenesis of erectile dysfunction. Risk factors for erectile dysfunction tend to be confused with the comorbidities seen in psoriasis patients. We also highlight that it may serve as a marker of cardiovascular risk., Competing Interests: Disclosure GVD reports non-financial support from Abbvie, non-financial support from Janssen, non-financial support from Novartis, outside the submitted work. - Abstract
A learning needs analysis was undertaken in a newly formed workforce. The goal of the learning needs analysis was to establish both the skill set and educational needs in the nursing workforce prior to moving to a new purpose built facility. The results would then enable nurse educators to develop, plan and deliver appropriate educational strategies. Staff (73%) completed an online survey; the results were collated and analysed. The results of the learning needs analysis suggested an experienced workforce that had great capacity to care for children across a wide spectrum of acute clinical needs. Interestingly the results of the learning needs analysis conflicted with the clinical reality. To investigate possible reasons for this difference we conducted a focus group session with nurse educators. The focus group findings highlighted the significance of change and how that impacted on the clinical capacity of experienced staff. We concluded that the results of the learning needs analysis were representative however they needed careful interpretation in the context of substantial change., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd.
