Summary Conditions required for the combined culture of either Glomus caledonium (Nicol. &Gerd.) Trappe &Gerdemann or Glomus mosseae (Nicol. &Gerd.) Gerdemann &Trappe with suspension-cultured plant cells have been investigated. Sucrose levels (0.05 to 0.5%, w/v) lower than those used for growth of plant cells were optimal for hyphal growth of both G. caledonium and G. mosseae. In vitro hyphal growth from chlamydospores of G. caledonium was stimulated by addition of cells of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Maris Butler), lucerne (Medicago sativa L. cv. Europ) and potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Maris Piper). The presence of wheat cells similarly stimulated hyphal growth from chlamydospores of G. mosseae. Further tests on the effect of lucerne cells on G. caledonium indicated that a volatile substance was involved in the improvement of hyphal growth.

The Hill End Trough (HET) is a deformed middle Silurian to Early Devonian sediment-dominated rift within the northeastern Lachlan Orogen. The HET hosts the Hill End, Hargraves, Napoleon Reefs, Stuart Town and Windeyer low-sulfide orogenic gold deposits. Adjacent to the HET are the Bodangora and Gulgong gold deposits. In this study we present 91 new sulfur- and 18 new lead-isotope analyses and collate a further 25 sulfur- and 32 lead-isotopes analyses from unpublished sources for these deposits. Larger gold deposits in the HET have near 0 δ34S‰ values indicating that sulfur in these systems was sourced from a magmatic reservoir. The dominant lead isotope signature for HET-hosted deposits reflects a crustal source however some mantle-derived lead has been introduced into the HET. Sulfur- and lead-isotopic results suggest that gold was sourced from mantle-derived magmatic units beneath the HET. The study supports earlier studies at Hill End by concluding that the majority of orogenic gold mineralisation in and adjacent to the HET formed during the Early Carboniferous period.

Brown, M. E. & Garr, G. R. 1984 Interactions between Azotobacter chroo-coccum and vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhiza and their effects on plant growth. Journal of Applied Bacteriology56, 429–437. The effects of simultaneous inoculation of roots of lettuce seedlings with vesicular-arbuscular endophytes and Azotobacter chroococcum are described. Endophytes alone increased yields of lettuce grown in partially sterilized P-deficient soil, but not in the same unsterile soil. Dual inoculation with endophytes and Azotobacter in both soils produced larger plants than either inoculum alone. In another poorly structured unsterile soil with adequate P for plant growth, endophytes depressed yields of lettuce. There was no association between endophytes and Azotobacter. In none of the experiments did Azotobacter influence the level of endophyte infection in the roots; but numbers of Azotobacter on the root systems were decreased in the presence of the endophytes. Azotobacter alone always increased growth of young plants before the effects of the endophytes were observed.

Survival of Hebeloma crustuliniforme (Bulliard ex Fries) Quelet, grown in a liquid medium and subsequently entrapped in beads of calcium alginate, was tested under different conditions. Mycelium viability was not affected either by curing the beads for up to 22 h in 0.7 M CaCl2 or by the addition of either peat or bentonite to the alginate gel. Both peat and bentonite improved the water retention of the alginate gel, but only the incorporation of bentonite slowed down the rate at which moisture was lost by evaporation. At 4 °C the entrapped mycelium retained its viability for at least 5 months, provided that storage conditions remained humid. Partial drying of the beads reduced the effective storage time to a month. Emergence of hyphae from the beads was influenced by the presence of sterile soil extracts prepared from a podzolic soil, an acid brown earth, a mesotrophic brown earth, an eutrophic brown earth, and a rendzina. Hyphae grew out of all the beads containing peat irrespective of the type of soil extract but only grew out of those containing bentonite when they were on the mesotrophic brown earth extract. Hyphal emergence from beads containing neither peat nor bentonite appeared to be influenced by the pH of the extract, being better on those that were more acidic. Both sterile and nonsterile nursery soil supported growth of hyphae from the three types of bead, but on nonsterile soil, hyphae were not abundant and those that developed began to die off sooner than those on sterile soil.

Measurements of the 34S/32S ratios in sulphides from the slightly metamorphosed Lady Loretta deposit show the sphalerite and galena to be in isotopic equilibrium. Pyrite in immediate association with these sulphides is not isotopically related. A similar distribution of sulphur isotopes had previously been noted in the even less altered McArthur deposit, for which a dual sulphur source was postulated. This fresh isotopic evidence from Lady Loretta now suggests that such a genesis for stratiform sulphides from the Proterozoic is not uncommon.
