1. Exploring new frontiers in the pulsed power laboratory: Recent progress

Abstract: One of the most fundamental processes in the Universe, nucleosynthesis of elements drives energy production in stars as well as the creation of all atoms heavier than hydrogen. To harness this process and open new ways for energy production, we must recreate some of the extreme conditions in which it occurs. We present results of experiments using a pulsed power facility to induce collective nuclear interactions producing stable nuclei of virtually every element in the periodic table. A high-power electron beam pulse striking a small metallic target is used to create the extreme dynamic environment. Material analysis studies detect an anomalously high presence of new chemical elements in the remnants of the exploded target supporting theoretical conjectures of the experiment. These results provide strong motivation to continue our research looking for additional proofs that heavy element nucleosynthesis is possible in pulsed power laboratory.

Abstract: In the nearby universe jets from AGN are observed to have a dramatic impact on their surrounding extragalactic environment. Their effect at the `cosmic noon' (z>1.5), the epoch when star formation and AGN activity peak, is instead much less constrained. Here we present a study of the giant (750 kpc) radio galaxy 103025+052430 located at the centre of a protocluster at redshift z=1.7, with a focus on its interaction with the external medium. We present new LOFAR observations at 144 MHz, which we combine with VLA 1.4 GHz and 0.5-7 keV Chandra archival data. The new map at 144 MHz confirms that the source has a complex morphology, possibly consistent with the `hybrid morphology' classification. The large size of the source gave us the possibility to perform a resolved radio spectral index analysis, a very unique opportunity for a source at such high redshift. This reveals a tentative flattening of the radio spectral index at the edge of the backflow in the Western lobe, which might be indicating plasma compression. The spatial coincidence between this region and the thermal X-ray bubble C suggests a causal connection between the two. Contrary to previous estimates for the bright X-ray component A, we find that inverse Compton scattering between the radio-emitting plasma of the Eastern lobe and the CMB photons can account for a large fraction (~45%-80%) of its total 0.5-7 keV measured flux. Finally, the X-ray bubble C, which is consistent with a thermal origin, is found to be significantly overpressurised with respect to the ambient medium. This suggests that it will tend to expand and release its energy in the surroundings, contributing to the overall intracluster medium heating. Overall, 103025+052430 gives us the chance to investigate the interaction between AGN jets and the surrounding gas in a system that is likely the predecessor of the rich galaxy clusters we all well know at z=0., 12 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract: Radio-loud active galaxies have two accretion modes [radiatively inefficient (RI) and radiatively efficient (RE)], with distinct optical and infrared signatures, and two jet dynamical behaviours, which in arcsec- to arcmin-resolution radio surveys manifest primarily as centre- or edge-brightened structures [Fanaroff-Riley (FR) class I and II]. The nature of the relationship between accretion mode and radio morphology (FR class) has been the subject of long debate. We present a comprehensive investigation of this relationship for a sample of 286 well-resolved radio galaxies in the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey Deep Fields (LoTSS-Deep) first data release, for which robust morphological and accretion mode classifications have been made. We find that two-thirds of luminous FRII radio galaxies are RI, and identify no significant differences in the visual appearance or source dynamic range (peak/mean surface brightness) of the RI and RE FRIIs, demonstrating that both RI and RE systems can produce FRII structures. We also find a significant population of low-luminosity FRIIs (predominantly RI), supporting our earlier conclusion that FRII radio structures can be produced at all radio luminosities. We demonstrate that in the luminosity range where both morphologies are present, the probability of producing FRI or FRII radio morphology is directly linked to stellar mass, while across all morphologies and luminosities, RE accretion occurs in systems with high specific star formation rate, presumably because this traces fuel availability. Abstract: We present the X-ray imaging and spectral analysis of the diffuse emission around the Spiderweb galaxy at z=2.16 and of its nuclear emission, based on a deep (700 ks) Chandra observation. We characterize the nuclear emission and computed the contamination in the surrounding regions due to the wings of the instrument PSF. Then, we quantified the extended emission within 12". We find that the Spiderweb galaxy hosts a mildly absorbed quasar, with modest yet significant variability on a timescale of ~1 year. We find that the emission in the jet regions is well described by a power law with Gamma~2-2.5, and it is consistent with IC upscattering of the CMB photons by the relativistic electrons. We also find a roughly symmetric, diffuse emission within a radius of ~100 kpc. This emission is consistent with thermal bremsstrahlung from a hot ICM with a temperature of kT=2.0_{-0.4}^{+0.7} keV, and a metallicity of Z, 19 pages, 16 figures, accepted in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Abstract: LOFAR, the Low Frequency Radio Array, is a new pan-European radio telescope that is almost fully operational. One of its main drivers is to make deep images of the low frequency radio sky. To be able to do this a number of challenges need to be addressed. These include the high data rates, removal of radio frequency interference, calibration of the beams and correcting for the corrupting influence of the ionosphere. One of the key science goals is to study merger shocks, particle acceleration mechanisms and the structure of magnetic fields in nearby and distant merging clusters. Recent studies with the GMRT and WSRT radio telescopes of the "Sausage" and the "Toothbrush" clusters have given a very good demonstration of the power of radio observations to study merging clusters. Recently we discovered that both clusters contain relic and halo sources, large diffuse regions of radio emission not associated with individual galaxies. The 2 Mpc northern relic in the Sausage cluster displays highly aligned magnetic fields and and exhibits a strong spectral index gradient that is a consequence of cooling of the synchrotron emitting particles in the post-shock region. We have argued that these observations provide strong evidence that shocks in merging clusters are capable of accelerating particles. For the Toothbrush cluster we observe a puzzling linear relic that extends over 2 Mpc. The proposed scenario is that a triple-merger can lead to such a structure. With LOFAR's sensitivity it will not only be possible to trace much weaker shocks, but also to study those shocks due to merging clusters up to redshifts of at least one. Abstract: The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is in the process of evaluating the protocols for collecting and analyzing roughness data. As part of that evaluation, a nationwide survey was performed to identify the trends and practices of various departments of transportation with regard to roughness data collection and analysis. All responding states indicated interest in obtaining the results of the survey, which was mailed to all 50 state departments of transportation. The responses show that most states are using laser-type road profilers for roughness measurements. The international roughness index (IRI) is the most widely used roughness index. Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS) data from different states are collected by using different equipment, and the data are collected in various wheelpaths and filtered differently. Stricter guidelines should be developed to ensure the consistency of HPMS data.

Abstract: Initial pavement smoothness has been shown to improve overall pavement performance. This combined with the need to provide a comfortable ride for the driving public underscores the importance of achieving high initial pavement smoothness. The Florida Department of Transportation has developed smoothness specifications for asphalt pavements. These smoothness specifications will be used on high-speed facilities and will be based on measurements obtained with laser road profilers. The ultimate goal is to include incentive and disincentive specifications aimed at rewarding the contractor for a high-quality ride and simultaneously providing a financial deterrent to providing a poor-quality ride.

Abstract: We present first results from electronic Multi-Element Remotely Linked Interferometer Network (e-MERLIN) and electronic European VLBI Network (e-EVN) observations of a small sample of ultra-steep spectrum radio sources, defined as those sources with a spectral index alpha < -1.4 between 74 MHz and 325 MHz, which are unresolved on arcsecond scales. Such sources are currently poorly understood and a number of theories as to their origin have been proposed in the literature. The new observations described here have resulted in the first detection of two of these sources at milliarcsecond scales and show that a significant fraction of ultra-steep spectrum sources may have compact structures which can only be studied at the high resolution available with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI)., Five pages, two tables, one figure. Abstract: LOFAR, the LOw-Frequency ARray, is a new-generation radio interferometer constructed in the north of the Netherlands and across europe. Utilizing a novel phased-array design, LOFAR covers the largely unexplored low-frequency range from 10-240 MHz and provides a number of unique observing capabilities. Spreading out from a core located near the village of Exloo in the northeast of the Netherlands, a total of 40 LOFAR stations are nearing completion. A further five stations have been deployed throughout Germany, and one station has been built in each of France, Sweden, and the UK. Digital beam-forming techniques make the LOFAR system agile and allow for rapid repointing of the telescope as well as the potential for multiple simultaneous observations. With its dense core array and long interferometric baselines, LOFAR achieves unparalleled sensitivity and angular resolution in the low-frequency radio regime. The LOFAR facilities are jointly operated by the International LOFAR Telescope (ILT) foundation, as an observatory open to the global astronomical community. LOFAR is one of the first radio observatories to feature automated processing pipelines to deliver fully calibrated science products to its user community. LOFAR's new capabilities, techniques and modus operandi make it an important pathfinder for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA). We give an overview of the LOFAR instrument, its major hardware and software components, and the core science objectives that have driven its design. 18. Prediction of Flexible Pavement Layer Moduli from Dynaflect and FWD Deflections

Abstract: Analytical investigations of Dyanflect and falling weight deflectometer (FWD) were performed using a linear elastic multilayer computer program (BISAR) to generate deflections for different combinations of layer thicknesses and moduli. The generated data base was used to develop layer moduli prediction equations for each NDT device. Prediction equations from multiple linear regression analysis of the FWD data were dependent upon all sensor positions except for the subgrade modulus prediction, which required only the use of either the sixth or seventh sensor. However, it was found that the Dyanflect with modified sensor locations provided separation of deflection response between the upper pavement layers (asphalt concrete and granular base), the subbase, and the subgrade. Although the Dynaflect prediction equations were reasonably accurate on the basis of the analytical evaluation, they were considered too complex for practical use. NDT data were collected on flexible pavement at sites exhibiting a wide range in deflection response. The standard sensor positions were used for both FWD and Dynaflect testing of the pavement sections. However, the modified sensor positions for the Dynaflect were also used to collect deflection data. Mean pavement temperature, cores of asphalt concrete pavement, and cone penetration test data were obtained concurrently. Asphalt recovered from the cores was tested to establish the asphalt viscosity-temperature relationship. Asphalt layer modulus values corresponding to pavement temperature during NDT testing were computed from a previously established relationship between resilient modulus of asphalt mixtures and asphalt viscosity. Cone penetration tests provided information on stratigraphy, soil type, and cone-bearing value. Plate-bearing test data were also obtained at several test sites. The cone penetrometer date were used to establish a relationship to the resilient moduli for use in predicting moduli of layers within the subgrade support system. Since pavement response and performance is highly dependent upon subgrade soil-moisture regime, the cone penetrometer provides data suitable for elastic layer modeling and pavement distress evaluation.

Abstract: The existence of double-double radio galaxies (DDRGs) is evidence for recurrent jet activity in AGN, as expected from standard accretion models. A detailed study of these rare sources provides new perspectives for investigating the AGN duty cycle, AGN-galaxy feedback, and accretion mechanisms. Large catalogues of radio sources provide statistical information about the evolution of the radio-loud AGN population out to high redshifts. Using wide-field imaging with the LOFAR telescope, we study both a well-known DDRG as well as a large number of radio sources in the field of view. We present a high resolution image of the DDRG B1834+620 obtained at 144 MHz using LOFAR commissioning data. Our image covers about 100 square degrees and contains over 1000 sources. The four components of the DDRG B1834+620 have been resolved for the first time at 144 MHz. Inner lobes were found to point towards the direction of the outer lobes, unlike standard FR~II sources. Polarized emission was detected in the northern outer lobe. The high spatial resolution allows the identification of a large number of small double-lobed radio sources; roughly 10% of all sources in the field are doubles with a separation smaller than 1 arcmin. The spectral fit of the four components is consistent with a scenario in which the outer lobes are still active or the jets recently switched off, while emission of the inner lobes is the result of a mix-up of new and old jet activity. From the presence of the newly extended features in the inner lobes of the DDRG, we can infer that the mechanism responsible for their formation is the bow shock that is driven by the newly launched jet. We find that the density of the small doubles exceeds the density of FR-II sources with similar properties at 1.4 GHz, but this difference becomes smaller for low flux densities., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Abstract: We present the final band-merged ELAIS catalogue at 6.7, 15, 90, and 175 $��$m, and the associated data at u,g,r,i,z,J,H,K, and 20cm. The origin of the survey, infrared and radio observations, data-reduction and optical identifications are briefly reviewed, and a summary of the area covered, and completeness limit for each infrared band is given. A detailed discussion of the band-merging and optical association strategy is given. The total catalogues consists of 2860 sources. For extragalactic sources observed in 3 or more infrared bands, colour-colour diagrams are presented and discussed in terms of the contributing infrared populations. Spectral energy distributions are shown for selected sources and compared with cirrus, M82 and Arp220 starburst, and AGN dust torus models. Spectroscopic redshifts are tabulated, where available. For the N1 and N2 areas, the INT ugriz Wide Field Survey, permits photometric redshifts to be estimated for galaxies and quasars. These agree well with the spectroscopic redshifts, within the uncertainty of the photometric method. The redshift distribution is given for selected ELAIS bands and colour-redshift diagrams are discussed. There is a high proportion of ultraluminous infrared galaxies in the ELAIS Catalogue ($> 10 %$ of 15 $��$m sources), many with Arp220-like colours. 10 hyperluminous infrared galaxies and 10 EROs are found in the survey. The large numbers of ultraluminous galaxies imply very strong evolution in the star-formation rate between z = 0 and 1., 21 pages, 31 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract: Inertial electrostatic confinement (IEC) fusion confines high energy ions in a spherical potential well where convergence in a central "core" region yields a high fusion rate. When operated in steady-state, the measured D-D neutron yield for a 30 cm diameter (7.5 cm diameter grid) IEC varies linearly with current I, giving /spl sim/10/sup 6/ neutrons/sec at 15 mA and 70 kV. Theoretically the yield should scale as a power law in I at higher currents, being proportional to I/sup 2/ in a pure beam-beam fusion regime. This favorable scaling, plus the need for short neutron bursts for some applications, motivates the development of a pulsed IEC. The present pulsed circuit provides amp-level pulses with tens of ms duration, simulating a quasi-steady state operation while avoiding arcing and controlling voltage excursions. Results demonstrating that the yield /spl sim/I/sup 2/ for 15-150 mA are presented, along with an approximate perveance criterion for initial double potential well formation.

Abstract: We present preliminary source counts at 6.7um and 15um from the Preliminary Analysis of the European Large Area ISO survey, with limiting flux densities of \~2mJy at 15um & ~1mJy at 6.7um. We separate the stellar contribution from the extragalactic using identifications with APM sources made with the likelihood ratio technique. We quantify the completeness & reliability of our source extraction using (a) repeated observations over small areas, (b) cross-IDs with stars of known spectral type, (c) detections of the PSF wings around bright sources, (d) comparison with independent algorithms. Flux calibration at 15um was performed using stellar IDs; the calibration does not agree with the pre-flight estimates, probably due to effects of detector hysteresis and photometric aperture correction. The 6.7um extragalactic counts are broadly reproduced in the Pearson & Rowan-Robinson model, but the Franceschini et al. (1997) model underpredicts the observed source density by ~0.5-1 dex, though the photometry at 6.7um is still preliminary. At 15um the extragalactic counts are in excellent agreement with the predictions of the Pearson & Rowan-Robinson (1996), Franceschini et al. (1994), Guiderdoni et al. (1997) and the evolving models of Xu et al. (1998), over 7 orders of magnitude in 15um flux density. The counts agree with other estimates from the ISOCAM instrument at overlapping flux densities (Elbaz et al. 1999), provided a consistent flux calibration is used. Luminosity evolution at a rate of (1+z)^3, incorporating mid-IR spectral features, provides a better fit to the 15um differential counts than (1+z)^4 density evolution. No-evolution models are excluded, and implying that below around 10mJy at 15um the source counts become dominated by an evolving cosmological population of dust-shrouded starbursts and/or active galaxies., MNRAS in press. 14 pages, uses BoxedEPS (included). Abstract: We present results and source counts at 90micron extracted from the Preliminary Analysis of the European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS). The survey covered about 11.6 square degrees of the sky in four main areas and was carried out with the PHOT instrument onboard the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). The survey is at least an order of magnitude deeper than the IRAS 100micron survey and is expected to provide constraints on the formation and evolution of galaxies. The majority of the detected sources are associated with galaxies on optical images. In some cases the optical associations are interacting pairs or small groups of galaxies suggesting the sample may include a significant fraction of luminous infrared galaxies. The source counts extracted from a reliable subset of the detected sources are in agreement with strongly evolving models of the starburst galaxy population., 13 pages, accepted by MNRAS. Abstract: Recent experimental results suggest the possible use of an Inertial-Electrostatic Confinement (EC) device as a low-power, high specific impulse satellite thruster. An EC device, when operating in what has been coined "Halo mode," produces a unique plasma jet that could be used as a highly efficient source of 5keV mono-energetic ions. If operated with heavy, noble gases this device could provide efficient, high specific impulse. This paper describes the results of the initial characterization studies of the EC in Halo mode. A series of experiments was conducted on an EC device with a 30-cm diameter vacuum vessel, and a 6.4-cm diameter cathode-grid with a 1.9-cm hole constructed on one side. Consistent, stable operation was observed for both argon and hydrogen gas over a wide range of pressures and voltages, producing a single jet out of the enlarged hole. A number of voltage vs. current curves were made for a bias post that was placed in the path of the plasma jet. Analysis concludes that the plasma jet has a sufficient electron population suitable for generating a substantial ion jet.

Abstract: Inertial Electrostatic Confinement (IEC) is a unique approach to fusion and plasma energy systems that was conceptualized in the 1960s (Hirsch 1967) and has been the focus of recent development in the 1990s (Miley et al. 1995a). In the interests of space power and propulsion systems, conceptual rocket design studies (Bussard and Jameson 1994, Miley et al. 1995b) using the IEC have predicted excellent performance for a variety of space missions, since the power unit avoids the use of magnets and heavy drives resulting in a very high, specific impulse compared to other fusion systems. In their recent survey of prior conceptual design studies of fusion rockets, Williams and Borowski (1997) found that the Bussard IEC conceptual study (the “QED” engine) offered a thrust-to-weight ratio of 10 milli-g’s, a factor of five higher than conventional magnetic confinement concepts and even slightly above anti-proton micro fission/fusion designs. Thus there is considerable motivation to study IEC concepts for eventual space applications. However, the physics feasibility of the IEC still requires experimental demonstration, and an expanded data base is needed to insure that a power unit can in fact be built.

Abstract: The Infrared Space Observatory, launched in November 1995 is the successor of IRAS and is providing unparalled sensitivity in the mid and far infrared. Although ISO is primarily an observatory-style mission, the ELAIS consortium (European Large Area ISO Survey) has been awarded a substantial amount of time to carry out a deep survey of the infrared sky. The ELAIS survey will cover around 10 square degrees predominantly distributed over the sky in four sectors, three of which are in the Northern hemisphere. The survey is being carried out at 15 microns and 90 microns, to a flux level 50–100 times deeper than the IRAS Faint Source Survey in the 10–20 micron range and 5–10 times deeper in the 50–100 micron range. The 15 micron survey is carried out with the ISO-CAM array with 6 arcsec pixels while the 90 micron survey is using the ISO-PHOT array with 60 arcsec pixels.

Abstract: Adaptive Optics is an important technique that will be increasingly used to carry out ground-based studies of distant galaxies in general and distant quasar hosts in particular. It will allow ground-based studies at a similar spatial resolution to those currently only possible from space. The relative flexibility of observing from the ground, both in terms of available instruments and speed between applying and observing means that such techniques will complement space based observation. Here we present first results from a pilot project to study quasar hosts with adaptive optics, and discuss the need for better defined samples of distant AGN and galaxies suitable for adaptive optics study.

Abstract: This paper presents the first results of a far-infrared search for protocluster-associated galaxy overdensities using the SPIRE instrument on-board the {\it Herschel} Space Observatory. Large ($\sim$400 arcmin$^{2}$) fields surrounding 26 powerful high-redshift radio galaxies ($2.0 < z < 4.1$; $L_{\rm 500 MHz} > 10^{28.5}$ WHz$^{-1}$) are mapped at 250, 350 and 500\mic to give a unique wide-field sample. On average the fields have a higher than expected, compared to blank fields, surface density of 500\mic sources within 6 comoving Mpc of the radio galaxy. The analysis is then restricted to potential protocluster members only, which are identified using a far-infrared colour selection; this reveals significant overdensities of galaxies in 2 fields, neither of which are previously known protoclusters. The probability of finding 2 overdensities of this size by chance, given the number of fields observed is $5 \times 10^{-4}$. Overdensities here exist around radio galaxies with $L_{\rm 500 MHz} \gtrsim 10^{29}$ WHz$^{-1}$ and $z < 3$. The radial extent of the average far-infrared overdensity is found to be $\sim$6 comoving Mpc. Comparison with predictions from numerical simulations shows that the overdensities are consistent with having masses $> 10^{14}$Msolar. However, the large uncertainty in the redshift estimation means that it is possible that these far-infrared overdensities consist of several structures across the redshift range searched., 13 pages, 9 figures; Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract: Galaxy clusters are the most massive gravitationally bound structures in the Universe, comprising thousands of galaxies and pervaded by a diffuse, hot intracluster medium (ICM) that dominates the baryonic content of these systems. The formation and evolution of the ICM across cosmic time 1 is thought to be driven by the continuous accretion of matter from the large-scale filamentary surroundings and energetic merger events with other clusters or groups. Until now, however, direct observations of the intracluster gas have been limited only to mature clusters in the later three-quarters of the history of the Universe, and we have been lacking a direct view of the hot, thermalized cluster atmosphere at the epoch when the first massive clusters formed. Here we report the detection (about 6σ) of the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect 2 in the direction of a protocluster. In fact, the SZ signal reveals the ICM thermal energy in a way that is insensitive to cosmological dimming, making it ideal for tracing the thermal history of cosmic structures 3 . This result indicates the presence of a nascent ICM within the Spiderweb protocluster at redshift z = 2.156, around 10 billion years ago. The amplitude and morphology of the detected signal show that the SZ effect from the protocluster is lower than expected from dynamical considerations and comparable with that of lower-redshift group-scale systems, consistent with expectations for a dynamically active progenitor of a local galaxy cluster., (© 2023.
