This study investigated drought and flooding changes in West Africa between 1983–2012 and projected near future (2025–2054) periods. The datasets used are the CHIRTS and CHIRPS-2 for observed reanalysis and five (05) models of ISIMIP2b for Shared Socio-economic Pathways (SSP1.2-6 and SSP5-8.5). Extremely and very wet days total precipitation (R95pTOT; R99pTOT) and Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) were employed to investigate floods and drought spatial distribution using Sen Slope trend analysis method. The results showed that there is a variability in the spatial distribution of extreme indices with an upward and downward trend of dry and wet rainfall periods in West Africa in both historical and projected periods. This observation suggests that the study area is faced with rainfall variability marked by extreme events. A further examination on the spatial and temporal distribution of flood occurrence showed that more flood events were observed in the Gulf of Guinea and Savannah countries, followed by an increase in uniform spatial distribution and moderate wet days both under SSP1.2.6, and SSP 5.8.5. In addition, result showed that an upward trend in wet periods can cause the occurrence of extreme events associated with floods in the context of global warming. However, with these scenarios negative changes are not excluded in the East, the Sahel and some western part of the Gulf of Guinea in the study area for the SSP5.8.5 scenario. Thus, the results revealed that the spatio- temporal variability of extreme rainfall can have repercussions on the hydrological functioning of watersheds, water availability and water-dependent activities.

L'objectif de cette étude est d'analyser les liens entre les indices climatiques et la variabilité des séries de précipitations et de débits. Afin de mieux comprendre la non stationnarité des différentes stations, les données de débits et de pluviométries utilisées concernent la station de Tortiya (1960–1996). Les indices climatiques couplés à ces séries sont l'indice NAO (North Atlantic Oscillation) et l'ENSO (El Niño – Southern Oscillation) sur la même période d'étude. La méthodologie a consisté à appliquer l'analyse et la cohérence en ondelettes sur les séries temporelles. Ces méthodes ont mis en évidence les modes de variabilité dans les séries chronologiques : le mode infra annuel, le mode annuel et le mode interannuel (1–2 ans; 2–4 ans; 4–8 ans). D'une part, les résultats montrent que la variabilité du signal est expliquée dans les hautes fréquences (6 mois à 1 an) dans les différentes séries chronologiques. À cette fréquence, c'est le mode annuel (1 an) qui enregistre toute la variabilité du signal comprise entre 30 % et 70 %. D'autre part, ce travail présente aussi des signaux sur d'autres fréquences et périodes assez faibles. L'analyse en ondelette a révélé que le signal dominant est très largement significatif au niveau du cycle annuel. Par ailleurs, l'usage de la cohérence en ondelettes entre les indices climatiques (ENSO, NAO) et les précipitations, indiquent une forte influence du NAO sur les séries pluviométriques et de débits.

Due to pronounced hydroclimatic fluctuations and rapid urban growth, coastal lagoonal systems in the Southern Mediterranean semi-arid areas undergo pronounced shoreline retreats and increased coastal floodings. The socioeconomic impacts of these alarming coastal changes remain poorly uncharacterized. To address this deficiency, we calculate the Socioeconomic Vulnerability Index (SVI) based on the decadal changes in shoreline retreat and land use occupation considering the study case of the coastal lagoon of Ghar El Melh in Tunisia which is representative of several lagoonal systems in the southern Mediterranean basin. We first monitor the diachronic shoreline changes from 1882 to 2016 using aerial and orbital photogrammetric scenes combined with topographic and bathymetric maps. Using the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) and historic bathymetric records, we then measure the changes in shoreline position from 1882 to 2016. Secondly, the above is correlated with the Land Use/Land Cover (LULC) assessment using a supervised classification algorithm from multiple Landsat 5-8 orbital photogrammetric scenes. We assess the SVI using five socioeconomic parameters: (1) population density, (2) land use change, (3) road network, and (4) settlements. Our results reveal the occurrence of severe coastal erosion with a maximum Net Shoreline Movement of −1580 m (±6 m) between 1882 and 2016. Moreover, the changes in land use from 1985 to 2021 reveal the extension in urban growth around the lagoon, rising from 5.4 % to 13.5 %. Whereas the vegetation coverage is decreasing by 9 % over the same period. The resulting SVI map reveals that 85 % of the lagoon area is characterized by high to very high vulnerability. This high coastal vulnerability is found to be primarily due to the extensive change in land occupation over the last few decades and is aggravated by the increase in hydroclimatic extremes.

The Republic of Djibouti is a small country in the Horn of Africa and as for most regions of Africa, ground rainfall stations are sparse. This study aims to compare at different time steps (annual, monthly, and daily) 15 rainfall estimation products (P-datasets) to 5 reference ground-based rainfall stations, over the period of 1980–1990. To classify the reliability of these products, several metrics were considered, the Kling Gupta Efficiency (KGE) and the Heidle Skills Scores (HSS at daily time step). For the study area, 5 P-datasets present high KGE values at annual and monthly time step: EWEMBI, GPCC, JRA-55 Adj, MSWEP and WFDEI-GPCC; the best 5 performing products at daily time step are CHIRPS, EWEMBI, JRA-55 Adj, MSWEP and WFDEI-GPCC. To complete this comparative analysis, it will be necessary to perform an analysis at the watershed scale and on a new temporal window.

The Ouémé River basin extends over almost half of Benin's territory, entirely located in a humid tropical climate. This river system includes a deltaic zone (delta of the Ouémé) known for its high agricultural potential and thus subject to a socio-economic development agenda. The Ouémé delta is facing recurrent floods that maintain rural agricultural population into a retrograding crisis with significant damages such as losses of properties. The objective of this study is to improve decision-making in the Ouémé basin through the simulation of exceptional floods using the HEC-RAS model. The HEC RAS model is a conceptual model, which works through mathematical and physical formulas to implement environmental phenomena for forecasting, understanding and analysis purposes. The model inputs used are basin GIS data, hydro-meteorological data, characteristics of existing hydraulic structures, etc. The targeted outputs include 1D/2D/3D view plans with support of satellite images, tables, graphs and curves. It is worth mentioning that the model provides outputs compatible with other tools, such as civil engineering (Civil 3D, Revit, Infraworks, etc.) and GIS, that help to expand the valorization fields. The implementation of the model in the Ouémé basin has made it possible to note: (i) that the recurring effect of losses and damages is justified by the settlement of the population on the river banks; (ii) that there is an important agricultural production in areas of high flood risk; (iii) that depending on the occurrence of the phenomenon, the flooded extent and the height of submersion remains variable, and more important for extreme flooding; (iv) about 12.07 % occurrence of river flood against 13.24 % for flash flood at a return period of 30 years. Moreover, it is very relevant to note that most of flood waters converge to the western part of the basin (an area with a low risk of flooding, stretched over 63.68 km2) and to the eastern part around the Damè-Wogon depression (an area at high risk of flooding, stretched over 10.49 km2).

The FRIEND-Water program (FWP) is the oldest and the most transverse program (i.e. Flagship Initiative) within the Hydrological Intergovernmental Program (IHP) from UNESCO. FRIEND means “Flow Regimes from International and Experimental Network Data”. The FWP is dedicated to allow large communities of hydrologists and associated disciplines to collaborate across borders on common shared data and scientific topics which are addressed through large world regions. The program has evolved in its 35 years of existence. There are 8 large regions in the world which gather tenths of hundreds of researchers, and organize events following several research topics defined according to each region priorities. The FWP is chaired by a scientific committee gathering regional coordinators and thematic experts. Each region gives its research priorities which evolve according to the projections given by the member States during the IHP council every year. The future activities of the FWP are defined by the upcoming IHP IX program and with the support of the newly created Montpellier UNESCO Category II Center ICIREWARD, acting as FWP Secretariat.

Northern African beaches are among the most vulnerable areas under the extreme climate change hazard. Mainly sedimentary low-lying platform, the coasts are supplied by terrestrial yields, which are increasingly interrupted by dams. Unfortunately, the sediment fluxes are rarely measured and monitored, so that it is quite impossible today to assess the contribution of continental sediments to the coast and its variability. The aim of our study is to determine the sampling protocol of delta sedimentation plain and nearshore seabed for better understanding of the anthropogenic driver in contrast to climate change. We adopt a multi-criteria analysis based both on the geomorphologic feature and the historic evolution from the River to the littoral plain. The shoreline evolution reveals an alarming retreat trend reaching −20 m ± 0.15 m yr−1 after the human-induced change where ∼50 % of sediment discharge has been trapped upstream the dam, including quite all the coarse material, like sand. The shoreline retreat and the decreasing sediment rate of fluvial flow are all due to the dam construction.

Le Bouregreg est le deuxième fleuve du Maroc. Il draine les eaux du centre du Maroc, du Moyen Atlas à l'Atlantique, qui sont stockées dans la retenue du barrage Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah créé en 1974 et situé à proximité de Rabat. Sa fonction exclusive est l'alimentation en eau potable pour les besoins individuels et industriels de 6 millions d'habitants de la bande littorale allant de Kénitra à Casablanca. Toutefois, l'exploitation de cette retenue présente aujourd'hui quelques incertitudes surtout en considérant l'augmentation de la population, la baisse des volumes précipités depuis 1979 et le comblement de la retenue par le transport de sédiments dus à l'érosion des sols. L'objectif de cette étude est de d'écrire l'évolution des pluies et des débits du bassin versant du Bouregreg à partir des séries de pluie et débit sur une période de 36 ans, de 1977 à 2013. Nous avons utiliséì les indices pluviométrique et hydrométrique, dans le but de caractériser l'hétérogénéité temporelle de la variabilité climatologique et dégager les grandes tendances des séries de données hydroclimatologiques. L'évolution des indices pluviométriques et hydrométriques met en relief la période déficitaire qu'a connu le Maroc au début des années 80. En effet, une baisse générale des pluies est remarquée dans le bassin versant du Bouregreg depuis 1979, ainsi il existe des relations entre la variabilité des pluies de certaines régions et l'Oscillation Nord Atlantique en 1996. Les méthodes statistiques de détection de ruptures montrent que la période de rupture majeure se trouve durant la deuxième moitié des années 70 et le début des années 80. Depuis cette date la baisse de la pluviométrie s'est installée de manière significative, et une perturbation du régime hydrologique est observée sur la presque totalité du bassin versant du Bouregreg, même si quelques années de meilleures pluviométries ont été observées à la fin des années 2000.

This paper investigates links between rainfall variability in the Ogooué River Basin (ORB) and El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in the Pacific Ocean. Recent hydroclimatology studies of the ORB and surrounding areas resulting in contrasting conclusions about links between rainfall variability and ENSO. Thus, to make the issue clearer, this study investigates the links between ENSO and rainfall in the ORB over the period 1940–1999. The principal component analysis of monthly rainfall in the ORB was done. The temporal mode of the first component corresponds to the interannual variations of rainfall on the ORB. Also, the pattern of the spatial mode of the first component shows that the ORB is a homogeneous hydroclimatic zone. However, no leading mode is significantly correlated to the ENSO index. A cross-wavelet analysis of the time series of basin-scale rainfall and the ENSO index was therefore carried out. The result is a set of periodogram structures corresponding to some ENSO episodes recorded over the study period. And wavelet coherence analysis of both time series confirms that there are significant links between ENSO and rainfall in the ORB.

Le bassin versant exoréique de l'Oued Ambouli situé au sud-est de la République de Djibouti, s'étend sur plus de 794 km2 soit 3.5 % de la surface du pays. Il est le plus grand bassin versant du district de Djibouti. Cet oued est soumis à des crues rares et brèves qui causent de lourds dégâts en vies humaines et économiques, accentués par l'expansion urbaine de la ville de Djibouti. Cette étude vise à calculer les différentes composantes du bilan hydrologique. Sur la période 2008–2013, ce bassin a reçu une pluie moyenne annuelle de 93.6 mm; l'évapotranspiration réelle (ETR) sur le bassin versant est estimée à 79.6 mm/an soit 85 % des précipitations moyennes annuelles; l'écoulement total approche un volume de 6.5 × 106 m3/an, soit 3.7 mm/an; par déduction, selon la formule du bilan hydrologique, l'infiltration totale est estimée à 10.3 mm/an. Ces résultats comparés aux résultats obtenus antérieurement, apparaissent comme très différents (principalement une baisse des valeurs). Les données disponibles sont très fragmentées dans le temps et ne couvrent que des périodes trop courtes pour pouvoir prétendre fournir des valeurs de référence pour un bilan hydrologique et permettre un suivi évolutif de celui-ci.

L'objectif de cet article est de faire une évaluation des tendances récentes des grandeurs hydroclimatiques dans le bassin de l'Ogooué en contexte de changement climatique. Pour cela, les données de pluies et de débits de ce bassin ont été analysées au moyen du test de Pettitt. Les résultats de cette étude révèlent une diminution statistiquement significative des modules annuels que le test de Pettitt situe en 1972–1973, mais rien de tel pour les pluies à ce même pas de temps. Les écarts des moyennes décennales à la moyenne interannuelle montrent cependant des liens plus nets entre ces variables, se traduisant essentiellement par une diminution synchrone au cours des décennies 1970 et 1980. Cette diminution est suivie d'une reprise au cours des deux décennies d'après (1990 et 2000), laquelle s'estompe à nouveau au cours de la décennie 2010. Les écoulements des saisons pluvieuses (printemps et automne) ont enregistré les modifications les plus importantes, suite aux variations des régimes pluviométriques des saisons sèches (hiver et été) qui les précèdent. La saison sèche d'hiver a connu entre les décennies 1970–1990 une diminution importante des précipitations qui a provoquée une chute des écoulements du printemps. Le rehaussement et la flexion respectivement notés au cours des décennies 2000 et 2010 s'accompagnent des mêmes tendances dans les écoulements du printemps. A l'inverse, entre les décennies 1980–1990, il a été noté une hausse conjointe des pluies d'été et des écoulements d'automne. La flexion des pluies d'été notée depuis la décennie 2000 est également perceptible dans les écoulements d'automne. Ces résultats pourraient servir à renforcer les capacités de gestion des ressources en eau dans le bassin versant concerné et dans la région. Ils apportent également de nouveaux éléments pour étudier et comprendre la variation saisonnière et la disponibilité de l'eau douce en aval, dans les estuaires et les zones côtières des rivières régionales. The objective of this article is to assess recent trends of hydroclimatic quantities in Ogooue basin in the context of climate change. For this, the rainfall and discharges data of this basin were analyzed using the Pettitt test. The results of this study reveal a statistically significant decrease in runoff that the Pettitt test situates in 1972–1973, but nothing like that for rainfall at this same time scale. The decadal deviations from the interannual average, however show links between these variables essentially marked by a synchronous decrease in the 1970s and 1980s. This decrease is followed by a recovery in the two decades following (1990 and 2000), which stops again during the 2010s. The flow of the rainy seasons (Spring and Autumn) recorded the most important modifications, following variations in the rainfall regimes of the dry seasons (Winter and Summer) which precede them. The dry Winter season experienced a significant decrease in precipitation between the 1970s and 1990s, which caused a decrease in Spring flows. The increase and flexion noted respectively during the 2000 and 2010 decades are accompanied by the same trends in Spring flows. Conversely, between the 1980s and the 1990s, there was a joint increase in Summer rainfall and Autumn flows. The decrease of Summer rainfall noted since the 2000s is also noticeable in the Autumn flows. These results could be used to strengthen water resources management capacities in the watershed concerned and the region. They also provide new insights to study and understand seasonal variation and availability of freshwater downstream, in estuaries and coastal areas of regional rivers.

La sécheresse observée en Afrique tropicale vers la fin des années 1960, a également affecté le bassin de la Bénoué en Afrique centrale, avec une persistance remarquable qui s'est répercutée sur les écoulements. Les ruptures à la baisse ont été mises en évidence dans les séries hydropluviométriques de ce bassin au pas de temps annuel en 1970–1971 (pluies) et 1971–1972 (débits). Les déficits associés à cette rupture sont de -2,9 % pour les pluies et -14,2 % pour les débits, par rapport à la moyenne climatologique (1950–1951 à 2014–2015). La saison humide a connu des évolutions pratiquement identiques. Cependant, depuis la décennie 1990, il est observé un relèvement significatif dans les écoulements moyens annuels de ce cours d'eau, et cela coïncide avec le retour des pluies. Le maintien de cette hausse au cours des récentes décennies pourrait être envisagé en raison de l'accroissement des espaces imperméabilisés dans le bassin, qui compenseraient le déficit engendré par la rechute des pluies après la décennie 1990 via une accentuation du ruissèlement. De plus, depuis la mise en eau du barrage de Lagdo en 1983, il est observé non seulement une augmentation de l'ensemble des gammes de débits minima suivant des taux allant de +57,8 % (minimum sur 1 jour) à +70,1 % (minimum sur 90 jours), mais aussi un accroissement général de la variabilité de l'ensemble des débits extrêmes (minima et maxima). L'augmentation progressive du stockage en saison de pluies à la retenue de Lagdo, pour fournir l'électricité et l'eau d'irrigation durant la saison sèche à une population grandissante, rendent imperceptibles les effets de l'accroissement des espaces imperméabilisés non seulement sur les écoulements de la saison humide, mais aussi sur les écoulements maxima. Au demeurant, l'opérationnalisation du barrage de Lagdo a eu un impact significatif sur le régime de la Bénoué, se traduisant essentiellement par le caractère désormais permanent de l'écoulement tout au long de l'année hydrologique et un important fléchissement de la crue d'août à octobre. Abstract. A tendency to drought conditions appeared in tropical Africa from the end of 1960s, also affect the Benoue watershed in central Africa, with a remarkable persistence in streamflow. Negative breakpoints are found in the annual hydroclimatic time series of the Benoue catchment at annual time step in 1970–1971 for rainfall, and in 1971–1972 for discharges. Compared to the climatological mean (1950–1951 to 2014–2015), the deficits associated with these negative breakpoints are approximating −2.9 % for rainfall, and −14.2 % for discharges. The wet season shows similar developments. However, from the 1990s, there has been a significant increase in the mean annual discharges of the Benoue River, which coincides with that of the rainfall during the same decade. The maintenance of this increase over the recent decades could also be expected in response to an increase in impervious surface areas (ISA) in the catchment area, which could compensate the deficit generated by the post-1990s rainfall deficit through increasing in runoff. From the watering of the Lagdo dam in 1983, an increase in all ranges of minimum flow, ranging from +57.8 % (1 d minimum) to +70.1 % (90 d minimum), as well as an increase in the variability of extreme flows (minima and maxima), has been detected. During the wet season, the increase in water storage capacity at the Lagdo reservoir, which is used to provide electricity and irrigation water to a growing population, mitigates the increase in runoff, especially in maximum runoff. Moreover, the operationalization of the Lagdo dam has a significant impact on the Benoue hydrological regime, resulting mainly in a new perennial nature of the flow, and a significant decrease in flood from August to October.

The African continent is probably the one with the lowest density of hydrometric stations currently measuring river discharge despite the fact that the number of operating stations was quite important until the 1970s. This new African Database of Hydrometric Indices (ADHI) provides a wide range of hydrometric indices and hydrological signatures computed from different sources of data after a quality control. It includes 1466 stations with at least 10 years of daily discharge data over the period 1950–2018. The average record length is 33 years, and 131 stations have complete records over 50 years. With this new dataset spanning most climatic regions of the African continent, several hydrometric indices have been computed, representing mean flow characteristics and extremes (low flows and floods), and are accessible to the scientific community. The database will be updated on a regular basis to include more hydrometric stations and longer time series of river discharge. The purpose of this study is to identify homogeneous rainfall regions and to study the spatial and temporal variability of rainfall in the Cheliff basin using the regional vector method and the statistical approach (Pettitt test, Lee Heghinian test and Hubert segmentation) and the geostatistic approach (inverse distance weighting method). In terms of results, the regional vector method highlighted six (6) homogeneous rainfall regions. The downward trend occurred in the study area in 1972, affecting a few coastal stations. In 1976, this decline extended to the South West and throughout the coastal region. In 1980, the drop covered the entire basin. This decline has resulted in an estimated deficit of 30 % on average in the eastern region, the coastal region and the Mina. However, the central part of the basin experienced a 20 % decrease compared to the period before the break (1968–1980). The same spatial irregularity in rainfall was observed during the pre-break and post-break periods (1981–2010). On the other hand, throughout the basin, the areas corresponding to the rainfall ranges identified during the 1968–1980 period experienced an average decrease of 100 mm during the post-break period, except in the eastern region, where the decrease exceeded 200 mm.

The Ouémé watersheds at Bétérou and Bonou has been recently facing increased sensitivity to extreme hydroclimatic phenomena that occurred by flooding or drought events. In the same time, the population growth and the related socio-economic activities increased the pressure state on water resources. In this context, hydrological modeling is an important issue and this study aims at analyzing the calibration of the hydrological model GR4J based on PET Penman-Monteith and Oudin methods. Daily rainfall, Penman-Monteith and Oudin evapotranspiration and daily data flow from the Bétérou and Bonou hydrometric stations on the Ouémé Basin have been implemented in the GR4J model over the period 1971 to 2010. Oudin PET values are slightly higher than the Penman-Monteith PET ones. However, the difference between the two PET methods have only few impacts on the optimization and performance criteria of the GR4J model. The Nash values ranges from 0.83 to 0.91 in Bonou, and 0.52 to 0.70 in Bétérou for the calibration in dry period, while in validation, they are 0.59 to 0.78 in Bétérou, and 0.56 to 0.88 in Bonou in wet season. In view of these results, with the two PET methods used which do not result from the same climatic variables, it should be said that the formulation of PET has only few impacts on the results of GR4J for these tropical basins.

The sedimentary contributions of the Medjerda to the coastal zone are poorly measured, and there is no chronicle of observations. In this context, the sediment monitoring appears indispensable for the quantification of sediment transport at the outlet. This study focuses on the largest watershed in Tunisia, the Wadi Medjerda (23 600 km2). The main objective of this work is to assess the reduction of sediment transport following anthropogenic intensification on the basin, especially since the construction of many large dams. In order to collect information on actual deposits over several years, the paleo-hydrological approach was applied through the study of sediment cores sampled in the low valley meanders on alluvial terraces, after the last dam (Sidi Salem, the largest water storage capacity over the basin), but before the estuary to avoid marine influence and near a hydrological station (Jdaida). The sedimentary deposits of the river provide key information on the past sedimentary inputs. A visible succession of sedimentary layers corresponding to the deposits of successive floods on the study site has been determined and the history of the sedimentary contributions of the Medjerda is reconstructed by this approach. The thickest layers of sedimentary deposits are related to exceptional events. They are mainly concentrated on the lower part of the core and are mainly composed of sands. The first 1.2 m of the core from the bottom upward relates to 10 years of river discharges, as can be determined from the 137Cs datation. The next upward 1.05 m of core relates to the following 20 years of discharges, up to 1981, date of the construction of the Sidi Salem dam, and is composed of a mix of sand, silts and clays. The last 75 cm of core near the surface is only composed of clays with thin silt bands, and relates to a period of 32 years. We thus observe that there is no more sand deposits in the river bed since the construction of the Sidi Salem dam. The deficit of sediment supply to the sea is viewed as a major factor to be taken into account for better understanding of the dynamics of coastal areas in the context of global climate change.

Recent sedimentary and morphological changes at the new mouth of Medjerda-River (Gulf of Tunis) are investigated using a multiproxy approach of sediment cores complited by 210Pbex and 137Cs method dating. The subject of the study is to focus on surveying the sedimentary evolution of Medjerda-Raoued Delta caused by the human intervention in the management of the main tributaries of the Medjerda-River (artificial channel of Henchir Tobias). Sediment cores (CEM-1 and CEM-3) were subjected to both multiproxy approaches (Grain size, geochemical analysis and dating radiometric 210Pbex and 137Cs). The sedimentological analysis of the new deltaic deposits shows a progradation sequence with the silt and clay deposits on the historic sandy substratum. The mean grain size evolution on the old beach profile shows a decreasing trend from backshore (CEM-3) to nearshore (CEM-1). The geochemical results show varying concentrations of chemical elements such as Fe, K, Rb, Nb, Cr, Ti, Ba, Ca, Sr, Zr, V, and potentially toxic metal trace elements such as Pb, Zn and the As. The Principal component Analysis (PCA) applied in the geochemical elements evolution confirms the marine origin of the sand deposits in the basic layers of the two cores. The chronological method (210Pbex and 137Cs) affirms that the first fluvial deposits were set up only after 1950. The sedimentological and geochemical result confirm the actual unless of coarser fluvial supplies under the human activities leading the negative coastal sediment balance and the shoreline retreat as well.

Tropical moist ecosystems, such as Ahémé lake, south-west Benin, are increasingly marked by water degradation, linked with the activities of increasing riparian populations. The objective of this study is to analyze sedimentary dynamics and its influence on the changing ecosystem of Ahémé lake from 1961–2010. Data used to carry out the study are records of precipitation, flows, turbidity, suspended sediment, mineral elements and bathymetry. Grain size data from the sieving of sediment samples were used to interpret suspended solids distribution in the lake. Linear correlation coefficients were used to assess the degree of dependence between rainfall and runoff inputs to the lake. Lake depth measurements in some areas of the lake serve to determine the rate of infilling. The sorting index was used to highlight the distribution and origin of sediments in the lake. The results show a degradation of the lake Ahémé ecosystem characterized by infilling of its bed, a high correlation (r = 0.90) between rainfall and runoff, seasonal change in physicochemical parameters (total suspended sediment decrease by −91 %) and decrease in fish production by 135.8 t yr−1. The highest mean suspended sediment concentrations in lake inputs occur during high water periods (123 mg L−1) compared to low water periods (11.2 mg L−1).

Reading predictors evolve through age: phonological awareness is the best predictor of reading abilities at the beginning of reading acquisition while Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) becomes the best reading predictor in more experienced readers (around 9–10 years old). Those developmental changes in the relationship between RAN and reading have so far been explained in term of participants' age. However, it should be noted that in the previous experiments age always co-vary with participants reading level. It is thus not clear whether RAN-reading relationship is developmental in nature or related to the reading system itself. This study investigates whether the behavioral changes in the relationship between RAN and reading and their electrophysiological correlates are related to the chronological age or to the reading level of the participants. Thirty two French-speaking children aged 7–10 years took part to the experiment: they were divided into groups contrasted on age but with similar reading levels and the other way round. Participants performed two reading tasks and four RAN tasks. EEG/ERP was recorded during discrete letter and picture RAN. Behavioral results revealed that alphanumeric RAN is more sensitive to age variations than reading level differences. The inverse profile was revealed for picture RAN, which discriminate poor and good readers among typically developed children within the same age-group. ERPs of both letter and picture RAN differed across age groups whereas only for the picture RAN ERPs differed across reading levels. Taken together, these results suggest that picture RAN is a particularly good indicator of reading level variance independently of age.

Mean annual cycles of runoff, evapotranspiration, leaf area index (LAI) and potential vegetation were modelled for Mesoamerica using the SVAT model MAPSS with different climatology datasets. We calibrated and validated the model after building a comprehensive database of regional runoff, climate, soils and LAI. The performance of several gridded precipitation climatology datasets (CRU, FCLIM, WorldClim, TRMM, WindPPT and TCMF) was evaluated and FCLIM produced the most realistic runoff. Annual runoff was successfully predicted (R2=0.84) for a set of 138 catchments, with a low runoff bias (12%) that might originate from an underestimation of the precipitation over cloud forests. The residuals were larger in small catchments but remained homogeneous across elevation, precipitation, and land-use gradients. Assuming a uniform distribution of parameters around literature values, and using a Monte Carlo-type approach, we estimated an average model uncertainty of 42% of the annual runoff. The MAPSS model was most sensitive to the parameterization of stomatal conductance. Monthly runoff seasonality was mimicked "fairly" in 78% of the catchments. Predicted LAI was consistent with MODIS collection 5 and GLOBCARBON remotely sensed global products. The simulated evapotranspiration:runoff ratio increased exponentially for low precipitation areas, highlighting the importance of accurately modelling evapotranspiration below 1500 mm of annual rainfall with the help of SVAT models such as MAPSS. We propose the first high-resolution (1 km2 pixel) maps combining average long-term runoff, evapotranspiration, leaf area index and potential vegetation types for Mesoamerica.

Tool wear is a natural phenomenon in machining process and it leads to get damage to tool. According to more demand in the market, the selection of high speed, feed rate and depth of cut of machining process are latest trends in all industry. Such machining process creates high cutting temperature, which not only reduces tool life but also induces the product quality. Cutting fluids are used to maintain the tool life and to preserve the workpiece surface properties without damages. To avoid this imperfection, it is necessary to use standard coolants during machining operations. The temperature and surface finish play a vital role in a machining process. In this work, three different nano fluids, like aluminium oxide, copper oxide and titanium oxide,are introduced, and used as a coolant in CNC lathe for turning operation. The output responses of temperature and surface roughness of the workpieces are analyzed with the help of Design of Experiment (DOE) by using L9 orthogonal array of each nano coolant. The result of output responses like temperature and surface roughness are compared with three nano fluids. The copper oxide nano fluid gives a better surface finish as compared to aluminium oxides and titanium oxide.

Consuming various TIG welding settings, the impact of mechanical properties on the butt joint of 410-Martensitic Stainless Steel Plate is explored. Mechanical properties such as tensile strength and hardness are evaluated on the welded butt junction plates using three levels of 200 A, 220 A and 240 A welding currents and the electrode diameters of 1.5, 2 and 2.5 mm and four factor parameters of inputs. Welding current, wire feed rate, electrode diameter, and gas flow rate are set as input parameters. The optimal input responses of welding current, electrode diameter, wire feed rate, and gas flow rate are employed over the 27 sample specimens based on array L27 Design of Experiment tool. The input parameters 240 A of welding current have improved significantly over the structural changes on martensitic form which is evidenced by their multiple SEM Micrographs, as it can be seen in the Hardness up to maximum of 512 BHN and the Tensile strength of 1090 N/mm2 outcomes.

This work analyzed the mechanical and vibration characteristic of the banana fiber sandwich layer with core AISI 304 steel wire mesh (WM). The following specimen configurations were prepared by hand lay-up method by varying fiber orientation in the skin layer: S = 0/0/0/0, S1 = 0/0/WM/0/0, S2 = 0/90/WM/90/0, S3 = 0/45/WM/-45/0 and S4 = 0/30/WM/60/0. The primary mechanical properties of the sandwich composite specimens were obtained by conducting Tensile, Flexural, and Impact strengths as per ASTM standards, whereas secondary vibration characteristics by experimental modal analysis. The presence of core WM enhances the primary properties especially in S1 attributed to the 0° fiber orientation with high load carrying capacity, natural frequency (Mode I, II), and stiffness. Whereas the specimen with angular fiber orientation (S2, S3, S4) in the skin layer exhibits higher damping showcasing their ability to dissipate energy. Specimen ‘S3ʹ acts as a performance change over with 45/-45 fiber in the skin layer. Morphology study of a test of a specimen with ‘WM’ shows the participation of matrix, banana fiber, and WM in load transfer mechanism with varied failure pattern. Hence, this type of composite structure can be preferred to use in structural and automobile applications by properly orienting the fiber in the skin layer.

Abstract Although different materials and designs have been tried in search of the ideal as well as ultra-wideband light absorber, achieving ultra-broadband and robust unpolarized light absorption over a wide angular range has proven to be a major issue. Light-field regulation capabilities provided by optical metamaterials are a potential new technique for perfect absorbers. It is our goal to design and demonstrate an ultra-wideband solar absorber for the ultraviolet to a mid-infrared region that has an absorptivity of TE/TM light of 96.2% on average. In the visible, NIR, and MIR bands of the solar spectrum, the absorbed energy is determined to be over 97.9%, above 96.1%, and over 95%, respectively under solar radiation according to the Air Mass Index 1.5 (AM1.5) spectrum investigation. In order to achieve this wideband absorption, the TiN material ground layer is followed by the SiO2 layer, and on top of that, a Cr layer with patterned Ti-based resonators of circular and rectangular multiple patterns. More applications in integrated optoelectronic devices could benefit from the ideal solar absorber's strong absorption, large angular responses, and scalable construction.

The World Economic Forum’s latest “Future of Jobs” report highlights the impact of ‘double disruption’ of Automation, followed by COVID-19. The report indicates that while 85 million jobs will be displaced, 47% of core skills will change by 2025. The topic thus is of immense value since it looks closely at the paradigm shift mentioned above and its further consequences. The result of the present study would be helpful to indicate the exact rankings of the programming and non-programming branches in the engineering field and thus would be instrumental in gauging learners’ inclination towards studying specific branches. The Bouregreg watershed is located to the north-western center of Morocco, characterized by a semi-arid climate. It covers a total area of approximately 10 000 km2. This basin is a very sensitive area to water erosion. This causes the degradation of its vegetation cover and its land. The most sensitive and poorly protected soils erode much more easily and lose their fertility.The objective of this work is to quantify soil losses by water erosion in the Bouregreg watershed using the Revised Universal Loss Equation (RUSLE) and Geographic Information Systems. The average annual rate of soil erosion in the Bouregreg watrershed are estimated at 20 t ha−1 yr−1. The spatial distribution map of soil erosion show that 71 % of the total area has low risk of soil erosion (<3 t ha−1 yr−1), while 28 % of the study area shows moderate to high risk of erosion (20–60 t ha−1 yr−1). Areas of very high risk of erosion are also present in some sectors of the watershed covering 1 % of the total surface.

Palinustus waguensis Kubo, 1963, is the deep-sea Japanese blunthorn lobster belonging to the Family Palinuridae. It is a species that has been rarely reported, living in rocky habitats on deep-reef slopes at a depth of 100–250 m. An estimated catch of 100 kg of P. waguensis consisting of 113 males, 54 females, and 23 berried lobsters were collected during the first fortnight of January 2019 from the multi-day shrimp trawls operating off Sakthikulangara, Kerala, India. The mean total length was recorded as 112.3 mm in males, 102.6 mm in females. The parameters of the length-weight relationship were estimated as, a = 0.041, b = 2.84 for males and a = 0.05, b = 2.86 for females, which were not significantly different (P > 0.05, r2 > 0.90) between the males and females. The relative condition factor (K) in the males and females of P. waguensis ranged from 2.07–4.96 and 1.87–3.86, respectively, attributing to the better feeding efficiency in males. Food and feeding analysis revealed the dietary content as fish (53 %), crab (23.5 %), shrimp (7.8 %), digested matter (11.6 %), and foraminifera (4 %). Feeding intensity analysis about the fullness of the stomach showed the specimens bearing full stomachs (11.3 %), three-fourth full (9.9 %). Length at 50 % maturity (Lm50) was 96.9 mm. Gonado-somatic index (GSI) ranged from 3.39 to 8.13. The present study forms the first report on the biology of the deep-water Japanese blunthorn lobster, P. waguensis from India.

Placental Site Trophoblastic Tumor (PSTT) is a rare malignancy that often presents with extensive disease and can be resistant to traditional treatments. We present the case of a woman with stage IV PSTT who was initially managed with neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by tumor debulking. Adjuvant therapy was guided by further pathologic analysis that revealed high levels of staining for PD-L1 as well as the presence of tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs). Subsequently, the patient was treated with traditional chemotherapy with the EP/EMA regimen with the addition of pembrolizumab. The patient’s treatment course was complicated by the development of pulmonary arteriovenous malformations, autoimmune thyroiditis thought to be secondary to immunotherapy, and significant tinnitus secondary to platinum agents. Currently the patient is in follow up and remains in a complete remission.

Abstract The Indus‐Yarlung suture of southernmost Tibet marks the initial collisional zone, the ongoing India‐Asia collision, and yet more than ~30 million years after the onset of collision, a thick detrital sedimentary unit was deposited just north of the suture: the Kailas Formation. The mechanism permitting subsidence of the deep intracontinental Kailas basin in a compressional tectonic regime remains uncertain. We present new apatite (16–11 Ma) and zircon (24–19 Ma) fission track (AFT and ZFT) ages from the Gangdese batholith just north of the Kailas basin. ZFT analysis of modern‐river sand from the northern Gangdese magmatic arc indicates an exhumation at 27.3 ± 1.3 Ma. Thermal modeling indicates that the batholith experienced reheating between 28 and 20 Ma, coeval with deposition in the Kailas basin (between 26 and 21 Ma), followed by overall rapid cooling between 20 and 17 Ma. We interpret this thermal history as a phase of regional Oligocene‐Miocene sedimentary burial followed by exhumation. By modeling mantle dynamics in the geodynamic framework of the India‐Asia collision, we show that transient dynamic topography over the relative southward folding of the Indian slab is consistent with burial and exhumation of the Gangdese magmatic arc during Oligocene‐Miocene time. The northward migration of the Indian continent relative to its own stati onary slab created a wave of dynamic topography that caused subsidence in the overriding plate north of the Himalaya, followed by a phase of surface uplift since ~27 Ma of the northern Gangdese magmatic arc. During latest Oligocene‐early Miocene time, the dynamic deflection center was in the Kailas area, and it progressively relocated southward to its present position at the Ganges basin.
