1. The use of Fibrin Sealants in Reducing Drain Output in Abdominoplasty: Is it Useful?

Abstract

Background: Abdominoplasty is a common surgical procedure in which excess abdominal skin and fat are reduced to improve body contouring. Fibrin sealant has been proposed to reduce postsurgical bleeding and exudation. In this study, we evaluated whether there was a significant statistical difference in surgical output between the use of fibrin glue and its nonuse in abdominoplasty surgery, specifically in reducing bleeding and exudation. Material and methods: A retrospective chart review of 68 postbariatric abdominoplasty patients (58 females, 10 males) was performed. We divided the patients into Group A (30 cases, 44%), in which we used fibrin sealant, and Group B (38 cases, 56%), in which we did not use fibrin glue. We calculated the total amount of liquid in suction drainages until the day of their removal. Statistical analysis included the independent t-test with a significance level of 0.05. Results: The average drainage output in Group A was 620.0 ± 375.0 mL, whereas in Group B, it was 500.0 ± 290.0 mL. Results indicate an insignificant correlation between the use of fibrin glue and the amount of liquid in the surgical drains (t = 1.52, p = 0.13). The result is not significant at p

2. Monitoring ammonia concentrations in more than 10 stations in the Po Valley for the period 2007–2022 in relation to the evolution of different sources

Abstract

Regarding secondary aerosols, in addition to the significant contribution of anthropogenic gases such as NOx and SO2, atmospheric ammonia (NH3) plays a crucial role as the primary basic gaseous species capable of neutralizing acidic compounds. This acid–base reaction is responsible for the formation of ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3), constituting up to 60% of PM10 within the Po River basin in Italy. Ion chromatographic analyses performed on offline samples indicate that this secondary inorganic species exhibits minimal concentration variability over the Po Valley because of limited air circulation due to orography and mesoscale air circulation. Therefore, investigating gaseous precursors becomes crucial. From the northern to the southern part of Lombardy—the region at the center of the basin—NH3 emission amounts account for 2.5, 11.1, and 27.7 t/y/km2, mainly due to agriculture and livestock activities (∼97%). To study NH3 temporal and spatial variability, the Environmental Protection Agency of Lombardy Region has been monitoring NH3 concentrations across its territory since 2007, with 10 active monitoring sites. Annual and seasonal cycles are presented, along with a focus on different stations, including urban, low-mountain background, high-impact livestock, and rural background, highlighting the impact of various sources. Measurements indicate that within the Po basin, NH3 concentrations can reach up to 700 µg/m3 (as an hourly average) in proximity to the main gaseous NH3 source. Instrument intercomparisons among online monitors and passive vials, as well as different online monitors, are presented. Therefore, this paper provides crucial data to understand the formation of secondary inorganic aerosols in one of the most important hotspot sites for air pollution.

Abstract

For a Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) aerosol source apportionment (SA) studies there is no standard procedure to select the most appropriate chemical components to be included in the input dataset for a given site typology, nor specific recommendations in this direction. However, these choices are crucial for the final SA outputs not only in terms of number of sources identified but also, and consequently, in the source contributions estimates. In fact, PMF tends to reproduce most of PM mass measured independently and introduced as a total variable in the input data, regardless of the percentage of PM mass which has been chemically characterized, so that the lack of some specific source tracers (e.g. levoglucosan) can potentially affect the results of the whole source apportionment study. The present study elaborates further on the same concept, evaluating quantitatively the impact of lacking specific sources’ tracers on the whole source apportionment, both in terms of identified sources and source contributions. This work aims to provide first recommendations on the most suitable and critical components to be included in PMF analyses in order to reduce PMF output uncertainty as much as possible, and better represent the most commons PM sources observed in many sites in Western countries. To this aim, we performed three sensitivity analyses on three different datasets across EU, including extended sets of organic tracers, in order to cover different types of urban conditions (Mediterranean, Continental, and Alpine), source types, and PM fractions. Our findings reveal that the vehicle exhaust source resulted to be less sensitive to the choice of analytes, although source contributions estimates can deviate significantly up to 44 %. On the other hand, for the detection of the non-exhaust one is clearly necessary to analyze specific inorganic elements. The choice of not analysing non-polar organics likely causes the loss of separation of exhaust and non-exhaust factors, thus obtaining a unique road traffic source, which provokes a significant bias of total contribution. Levoglucosan was, in most cases, crucial to identify biomass burning contributions in Milan and in Barcelona, in spite of the presence of PAHs in Barcelona, while for the case of Grenoble, even discarding levoglucosan, the presence of PAHs allowed identifying the BB factor. Modifying the rest of analytes provoke a systematic underestimation of biomass burning source contributions. SIA factors resulted to be generally overestimated with respect to the base case analysis, also in the case that ions were not included in the PMF analysis. Trace elements were crucial to identify shipping emissions (V and Ni) and industrial sources (Pb, Ni, Br, Zn, Mn, Cd and As). When changing the rest of input variables, the uncertainty was narrow for shipping but large for industrial processes. Major and trace elements were also crucial to identify the mineral/soil factor at all cities. Biogenic SOA and Anthropogenic SOA factors were sensitive to the presence of their molecular tracers, since the availability of OC alone is unable to separate a SOA factor. Arabitol and sorbitol were crucial to detecting fungal spores while odd number of higher alkanes (C27 to C31) for plant debris.

Abstract

Light is recognized as an accurate and noninvasive tool for stimulating excitable cells. Here, we report on a non-genetic approach based on organic molecular phototransducers that allows wiring- and electrode-free tissue modulation. As a proof of concept, we show photostimulation of an in vitro cardiac microphysiological model mediated by an amphiphilic azobenzene compound that preferentially dwells in the cell membrane. Exploiting this optical based stimulation technology could be a disruptive approach for highly resolved cardiac tissue stimulation.

6. Impacts of the COVID-19 lockdown on air pollution at regional and urban background sites in northern Italy

Abstract

The COVID-19 lockdown measures gradually implemented in Lombardy (northern Italy) from 23 February 2020 led to a downturn in several economic sectors with possible impacts on air quality. Several communications claimed in the first weeks of March 2020 that the mitigation in air pollution observed at that time was actually related to these lockdown measures without considering that seasonal variations in emissions and meteorology also influence air quality. To determine the specific impact of lockdown measures on air quality in northern Italy, we compared observations from the European Commission Atmospheric Observatory of Ispra (regional background) and from the regional environmental protection agency (ARPA) air monitoring stations in the Milan conurbation (urban background) with expected values for these observations using two different approaches. On the one hand, intensive aerosol variables determined from specific aerosol characterisation observations performed in Ispra were compared to their 3-year averages. On the other hand, ground-level measured concentrations of atmospheric pollutants (NO2, PM10, O3, NO, SO2) were compared to expected concentrations derived from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service Regional (CAMS) ensemble model forecasts, which did not account for lockdown measures. From these comparisons, we show that NO2 concentrations decreased as a consequence of the lockdown by −30 % and −40 % on average at the urban and regional background sites, respectively. Unlike NO2, PM10 concentrations were not significantly affected by lockdown measures. This could be due to any decreases in PM10 (and PM10 precursors) emissions from traffic being compensated for by increases in emissions from domestic heating and/or from changes in the secondary aerosol formation regime resulting from the lockdown measures. The implementation of the lockdown measures also led to an increase in the highest O3 concentrations at both the urban and regional background sites resulting from reduced titration of O3 by NO. The relaxation of the lockdown measures beginning in May resulted in close-to-expected NO2 concentrations in the urban background and to significant increases in PM10 in comparison to expected concentrations at both regional and urban background sites.

Abstract

Abstract Selective and rapid regulation of ionic channels is pivotal to the understanding of physiological processes and has a crucial impact in developing novel therapeutic strategies. Transient Receptor Potential (TRP) channels are emerging as essential cellular switches that allow animals to respond to their environment. In particular, the Vanilloid Receptor 1 (TRPV1), besides being involved in the body temperature regulation and in the response to pain, has important roles in several neuronal functions, as cytoskeleton dynamics, injured neurons regeneration, synaptic plasticity. Currently available tools to modulate TRPV1 activity suffer from limited spatial selectivity, do not allow for temporally precise control, and are usually not reversible, thus limiting their application potential. The use of optical excitation would allow for overcoming all these limitations. Here, we propose a novel strategy, based on the use of light-sensitive, conjugated polymers. We demonstrate that illumination of a polymer thin film leads to reliable, robust and temporally precise control of TRPV1 channels. Interestingly, the activation of the channel is due to the combination of two different, locally confined effects, namely the release of thermal energy from the polymer surface and the variation of the local ionic concentration at the cell/polymer interface, both mediated by the polymer photoexcitation.

The fragmentation of quasi-projectiles from the nuclear reaction 40Ca+12C at 25 MeV per nucleon bombarding energy was used to produce α-emission sources. From a careful selection of these sources provided by a complete detection and from comparisons with models of sequential and simultaneous decays, evidence in favor of α-particle clustering from excited 16O, 20Ne and 24Mg is reported. 9. Methodology for Estimating Emissions from Small Domestic Fuelwood Appliances in Lombardy

Abstract

Estimates from many national emission inventories and air quality measurements (Gianelle et al., 2013) are showing the relevance of biomass burning in small domestic appliances as source of particulate matter and benzo(a)pyrene (BaP). For Lombardy region, the highest populated of Italy, domestic heating is determining 38% of the total particulate and among this fuelwood contributes for 99% of PM and is responsible of 66% of the total regional emission of BaP (INEMAR, 2018). In the framework of the emissions inventories, estimates are due to a combination of an average emission factor detailed for technology and pollutant and an activity indicator defined as the annual energy burned detailed for technology, reference year and geographic detail (e.g., region, district, sampling statistical cells, …). This paper presents the methodologies and tools for monitoring combustion technologies evolution during the years, estimating annual energy amount burned and accounting the different profile of use. From CATI (Computer Aided Telephonic Interview) surveys it is possible by sampling statistics to obtain information on technologies diffusion and to estimate energy burned (Pastorello et al., 2011). Unfortunately, this data are quite discontinuous in the years. A methodology linking statistics and information arising from producers, chimneysweeper’s associations and preliminary filling of biomass heater regional register has been developed to consider the evolution and substitution rate of burning technologies. A first picture of the numbers of biomass heaters for a reference year is evolved in the next years considering market information and technology share in new installations from installers and regional register. Obsolete and substituted appliances are calculated for each year considering a probability function due to appliance age. The probability of a technology to be substituted will increase with the age of the installation moving up to the appliances average lifetime and newly installed burners are not capable to a substitution in the next year. With the developed procedure it is possible to obtain the evolution during the years of the number of different appliances and to project their evolution in the future. The introduction of coefficient for energy usage (overall annual energy burned from single user in a specific device) can allow the best evaluation of the positive effect of more efficient devices. Information from regional energy balances can be used as propagating coefficients of the sampling statistics for calculating municipal information on total energy burned in domestic wood heaters, alternatively an algorithm for estimating the heating demand of dwellings can be implemented on the base of annual heating degree days (HDD), thermal dispersion coefficients, building age and heated total volume. The HHDs can be obtained from the diagnostic system of ARPA Lombardia for the time series between 2008 and 2016 and are commonly considered as a proxy of the thermal season allowing to calculate the biomass energy consumption for those years not covered by CATI surveys (GSE, 2017).

Recently, water-gated organic field-effect transistors (WGOFET) have been intensively studied for their application in the biological field. Surprisingly, a very limited number of conjugated polymers have been reported so far. Here, we systematically explore a series of polythiophene derivatives, presenting different alkyl side chains lengths and orientation, and characterized by various morphologies: comparative evaluation of their performances allows highlighting the critical role played by alkyl side chains, which significantly affects the polymer/water interface capacitance. Reported results provide useful guidelines towards further development of WGOFETs and represent a step forward in the understanding of the polymer/water interface phenomena.

Abstract

Dynamic liquefaction of saturate loose sand deposit is a common geotechnical failure effect caused by an earthquake, which can lead to structural damage of buildings, lifelines and industrial components in general. Several damage cases have been observed in past events and have been documented in the technical literature and post-earthquake reconnaissance reports. Failure and malfunctioning of pipelines, tanks and wastewater treatment plants, induced by differential vertical settlements, horizontal lateral spread and uplift of underground structures, are described. All these permanent displacements could be directly related to co-seismic liquefaction of the foundation soil. Moreover, this failure mechanism is strongly site dependent and the abovementioned effects frequently occurred in coastal and fluvial plane areas, where industrial plants are often situated. The paper studies and compares the behaviour of some important industrial components during the liquefaction event. Empirical fragilities and threshold values were evaluated on the basis of the significant seismic parameter, accounting for the possible hazardous effects of the release of toxic and flammable fluids. These tools could be assessed by means of a comparison with similar ones proposed by current building codes and implemented in existing software for the risk assessment of industrial plants and lifeline networks.

Pipelines are basilar structures for the development of civil and industrial activities. Their seismic behaviour could be analyzed by applying a multi-disciplinary approach. In particular, for underground pipelines, soil/structure interaction is considered determinant during the seismic event. Moreover, for specific site conditions, ground failure phenomena induced by earthquakes might occur. Since such phenomena are generally associated to permanent soil displacement, the related deformations could be not tolerated by the pipelines, causing structural breaks and/or the losses of fluid containment. On the basis of a large collection of damage occurred to pipelines during recent earthquakes, a class of fragility curves was built up for underground structures underground failure. These curves were given as the probability of the occurrence of certain damage in a pipeline segment as a function of a seismic parameter. Therefore, compared to the existing formulations based on the estimation of a repair rate, RR, this study gives fragility curves which are directly useable on HAZUS-like platform, similarly to punctual structures, as above ground tanks. These empirical formulations could be easily treated in order to obtain tools for the estimation of seismic vulnerability, implemented in numerical codes for QRA (Quantitative Risk Analyses) of industrial plants. For this purpose, in this paper, the probit parameters and the threshold values are also given.

Abstract

Wastewater treatment systems are complex networks composed by several interconnected elements, each of them characterized by specific seismic vulnerability. In the aftermath of an earthquake it is essential that such systems are fully or at least partially operating for the correct operation. Furthermore, the system failure can result in the deterioration of the environment by leakage of untreated wastewater on soil and/or its discharge into superficial water bodies. This paper deals with the assessment of seismic vulnerability of wastewater treatment plants by analyzing the effects of past earthquakes and taking into account the following factors: (i) plant size (small, medium and large); (ii) typology of wastewaters treated (municipal and industrial); (iii) treatment level performed (primary, secondary and tertiary); (iv) main causes of damages (soil/structure dynamic interaction and inertial overload); (v) elements damaged (structural, e.g. tank walls and bottom, and non-structural, e.g sludge scrapers, baffles, aerators, mechanical mixers). Historical seismic data for each combination of the previously listed factors will be given when available, in order to highlight common features and differences. The final aim of this work is to provide fragility curves and threshold values with respect to the main seismic intensity parameters and considering either the loss of control or the leak of wastewater in the ground from containment system. Once validated such curves could be successfully and easily used implemented into existing or new Quantitative Risk Analysis (QRA) tools or for land-use planning methodologies.

Industrial plants are complex systems that need stringent requirements to ensure structural safety. If large amount of toxic or flammable materials are handled, the consequences of failures can affect wide surrounding areas. The prediction and prevention of possible accidental scenarios triggered by the interaction of natural disaster with industrial equipment depend upon the reliability of available tools for structural design and hazard assessment. In this paper, attention is focused on industrial pipelines and on damages suffered by these structures under seismic sequences. Available data have been classified on the basis of seismological, geotechnical, structural and performance parameters, in order to assess the main factors affecting the seismic vulnerability of pipelines. An observational correlation between pipeline performance and relevant earthquake intensity measures for both transient and permanent deformations is derived. Moreover, compared to the available literature performance parameters based on a repair ratio, new fragility formulations have been built on the basis of the failure probability of pipelines. This circumstance provided some interesting remarks on the loss of containment, which has been largely demonstrated as the main issue for qualitative and quantitative risk assessment depending on relevant failure mechanisms.

Abstract

Matière Nucléaire NIM; Semiperipheral collisions in the $^{124}$Sn+${64}Ni reaction at 35 MeV/nucleon were studied using the forward part of the Charged Heavy Ion Mass and Energy Resolving Array. Nearly completely determined ternary events involving projectilelike fragments (PLF), targetlike fragments (TLF), and intermediate mass fragments (IMF) were selected. A new method of studying the reaction mechanism, focusing on the analysis of the correlations between relative velocities in the IMF+PLF and IMF+TLF subsystems, is proposed. The relative velocity correlations provide information on the time sequence and time scale of the neck fragmentation processes leading to production of IMFs. It is shown that the majority of light IMFs are produced within 40–80 fm/c after the system starts to reseparate. Heavy IMFs are formed at times of about 120 fm/c or later and can be viewed as resulting from two-step (sequential) neck rupture processes.

Abstract

Some properties of fast, nonequilibrium splitting of projectiles in the 124Sn+64Ni reaction at 35AMeV were determined using the 4π CHIMERA detector system. In particular the charge distributions, in- and out-of-plane angular distributions, and relative velocities of projectilelike fragments were measured. The time scale of the processwas estimated and it turned out that the process is sequential but much faster than the ordinary, equilibrated fission.
